So I am on my way to a holiday in Feutuerventura in June.

We are looking at using Travelup.com just to book a hotel - it looks really good and a nice price, though as I do not know and have not used the site before I'm worried it's a scam. The price I found for the hotel we want is around 40 euro cheaper per night than what I can find on other sites.

Do they “work with Skyscanner” or just pay to advertise on that site. Don’t assume there is a relationship based on any guarantee, endorsement or recommendation. It’s usually just third-party sites paying to advertise so their deals are displayed.

Out of curiosity I just looked at the TravelUp website and searched for some Singapore hotels (as I know them well and know their usual prices). The first hotel I saw listed came out at 68.88 Euro more than it’s usual price. Then I looked up a Brisbane Hotel I know well and it was 145.94 Euro on TravelUp (but is 84.50 Euro if I book it on other websites).

All the prices I saw on TravelUp looked way over what they are on other well-known and reliable booking sites.

I agree wiht the other two replies. TravelUp is not a scam site, but neither do I think that it's a good company to use. I'm sure that more bookings go well than don't, but all the same I wouldn't trust a price that is 40 euro per night lower than anywhere else.

My experience is, like Avanti, that their prices are a bit higher than booking direct, so I'm even more suspicious in this instance.

"Legit" as in legitimate rip-off. Avoid this site like the plague.

It's not even an easy to use website

you select a hotel for more information, decide that you don't like it and want to go back to the list and it recreates the list from scratch having conveniently forgotten all of your previous selections

It wont let you open up each hotel in a new window to avoid that problem

and half the hotels that they claim are in the city you are looking for are really 20 km away.

In principle, if a company makes an error then they should absorb the cost of that and not pass it on to their customers. But poor companies won't worry about that, because they are poor.

They advertised FREE CANCELLATION on my booking but then charged me $15 per person to cancel my reservation. Even though FREE should mean free, they referred me to the "fine print". I would not recommend this site to anyone

Did the T&C's explain why free wan't free? I suspect that here were certain exclusions listed, was that the case, or was it something else?

TravelUp is a tour and travel company that offers many holiday packages. They claim to provide one-of-a-kind vacations for those who want a fast-paced and exciting vacation, as well as those who want something more leisurely and relaxing.

They also state they offer a one-stop solution for your holiday to any imaginable destination in order to provide their customers with a broad selection of holiday destinations.

TravelUp is based out of the UK and was founded in 2004, and has grown remarkably fast. For example, if you select a hotel, then decide that you don't like it and want to go back to the list. It recreates the list from scratch, which can be inconvenient and frustrating for some people. This issue can be solved by opening up each hotel in a new window/tab, but the website does not allow you to do so, which is problematic. And half of the hotels shown are 20km away from the city you are looking in. It limits your options.

The site does not make it obvious who is running the company. No information is given on the people on board, which some users found troubling, especially those with customer service issues. The lack of precise contact details can also be a problem if you need to get in touch with them quickly.

Sad to say I would never use them again. I had to change the date within 72 hours because of a work meeting. When I tried to rebook our hotel, the price was now $900+ more for the same 7 days. I checked directly with the hotel and their rate was $560 less than Travel Up. I told Jacob to match it or cancel it. After a few more blah blah emails from Jacob, I finally got canceled. A rip off and not at all a nice experience.

Bait and switch

Wanted to book a long distance flight and I picked TravelUp through SkyScanner. Everything was good until I entered my credit card details and submitted reservation. Almost immediately the TravelUp booking system pops up a message saying the reservation failed because the airline didn't provide up to date live prices, and to call them to make reservation. It also said payment wasn't taken my card, which was correct. I ditched them and went directly to the airline website (which was only about £60 more for a £1300 fare) and purchased the tickets without an issue. Then someone from TravelUp calls with a fake accent and possibly a made name called DEAN JONES, asking me to call them back to make the booking. It went to my voice mail which I immediately deleted. So seems like this a bait and switch gang. If not why can't you advertise up-to-date prices on their system. I suggest you keep away.

Multiple declined payments.

Multiple declined payments despite trying a number of devices. Rang my bank (NatWest) to check why payment wasn't getting through and they said they couldn't even see transaction being requested so problem was with vendor (i.e. TravelUp website) rather than debit card. Eventually successful on 7th attempt. Also, when initially shopping for fares, I got an email from a TravelUp agent stating I could ring back to get discounted cabin upgrade fares, but despite phoning the next day (as well as emailing), I got no response. TravelUp has been faultless on many previous occasions, but this time it was such a difficult affair to buy tickets for my summer holiday. Disappointed.

TravelUp processed my payment for a…

TravelUp processed my payment for a trip to my home country but failed to provide essential information. They did not inform me that a transit visa was required in France for travel from the UK to Africa. When I tried to change my flight or delay my ticket two days after booking, they asked for a fee higher than the original ticket price and refused any modifications to my ticket. On the day of travel, I learned at the airport check-in that a transit visa for Paris was compulsory. TravelUp was not helpful in addressing my concerns. Both the airline and TravelUp shirked responsibility, leaving me abandoned at the airport as my flight departed without any assistance. From all indications, these guys are only interested in your money. I wish no traveller had to go through such an ordeal.

I was not given any prior warning or notification about this extra fee. £18.84 is an extortionate charge by any means. Very poor customer service.

Sorry I have to change my rating because of the terrible experience I have gone through due to very poor customer service. My booking could not be confirmed due to a technical glitch with regards to payment from the travel up team. I tried to call them twice and on both occasions I was assured that somebody will call me 15-30 minutes. I never received a call. I was sent an email later that I will be receiving a refund and moreover did not explain what was the exact issue and just said ‘your payment was not verified’ even though payment was shown on the bank statement next day. Emailing again to the team I came to know there was a problem from their end. They could have been honest about this but end of the day it was my booking that got cancelled. Not speaking to the customer even after telephoning twice also will raise questions about what exactly is the truth. I think it is important to be considerate about customer problems rather than just offering a refund.

Ali Shah, founder of TravelUp: Success came after I learnt English off TV subtitles

TravelUp founder Ali Shah sold his first flights on Teletext

The airlines wouldn’t allow Ali Shah’s new travel agency to sell their tickets. They demanded proof that TravelUp had enough customers to make it worth their while — which was a bit tricky if he didn’t have any of their tickets to sell.

Shah spent hours visiting the airlines’ stalls at travel trade fairs until they gave in. “It took five years to get some of them,” he recalled.

TravelUp has taken off since Shah launched it in 2004, having convinced America’s Continental Airlines. After processing bookings worth more than £300m, it made pre-tax profits of £2.1m on sales of £77.2m — including fees on flights and sales of additional products such as car hire and insurance — in the 12 months to the end of March last year.

That won TravelUp a place on The Sunday Times Fast Track 100 list of Britain’s fastest-growing companies.

Shah was born in Sialkot, in Pakistan’s Punjab province. His father supplied fuel to petrol stations.

After attending Murray College, a school set up by Scottish missionaries, Shah studied physics, chemistry and mathematics at Punjab University in the provincial capital of Lahore before becoming a travel agent.

Around that time, Shah was introduced to Ayesha, the daughter of a family friend who lived in Britain. They stayed in touch via email for a couple of years. In 2002, Shah moved to the UK and they married.

Unable to speak a word of English when he arrived in Reading, he worked as a security guard at a now-closed independent local radio station. After three months, he decided: “This isn’t for me.”

He learnt English by keeping the television on all day and night with subtitles running. One side-effect of this is that Shah “can’t sleep without the telly on”.

He went to work for a small agency, Fly the World for Less, but spent less than six months there before striking out on his own with cash saved from his security work.

At first, TravelUp consisted of a computer and printer in his living room. He started by advertising flights to Bangkok on Teletext and, in an effort to make sure that satisfied travellers came back to him for their next holiday, he sent his customers thank-you cards. He soon expanded to include Australian and New Zealand destinations.

Shah said the travel business was far simpler in Britain than in Pakistan. “In Pakistan, one ticket has four destinations and the height of the ticket was taller than me. Here it is just A-to-B travel. I found it really easy.”

Nonetheless, there were challenges. It was difficult to convince airlines to use his agency and Shah also had to deal with “ruthless” larger rivals that “just wanted me to be out of business”. He said they pressured airlines to ignore him — but the tactic backfired because it showed “they were scared of me”.

His pitch to carriers was that “you don’t want to put all your eggs in one basket”.

As the use of Teletext declined, Shah opened a shop in Reading, but he soon realised that technology was the way to scale up rapidly. He hired two Sri Lankans to build a website and a bespoke booking system, E-Traveller — still the backbone of the business. Shah later added a call centre in Pakistan.

TravelUp flew under the radar at first. He said that being based in Reading was lucky, because “if we were in London we would have faced much more competition”.

From 2014, as Shah’s confidence grew alongside the business, he began selling holidays to South America and short-haul packages. He even started his own hotel booking operation.

Shah, 42, owns 100% of the business and has never taken outside funding. He has appointed broker Shore Capital to advise on a stock market listing in September that would crystallise a £50m fortune, although he said that he was “considering all options”, including selling a stake to venture capitalists or private equity to fuel growth.

He employs 70 staff in Aldermaston, Berkshire, six in Palma, Majorca, and more than 100 split between two call centres in Pakistan.

Shah — whose favourite destination is Orlando, Florida, where he visits Disneyworld and Universal Studios — lives with his wife in Ascot, Berkshire, with their cricket-mad sons Sufyan, 15, Yousaf, 13, and Musa, 11.

He said that taking the brickbats had made him a better entrepreneur. “Don’t be daunted by the fury of the opposing wind; it only blows to soar you high.”

Terrible customer service

Terrible customer service. I had a multi city trip booked and my 2nd destination flight was cancelled so they offered me a connection flight with a 12 hour layover even where cheaper direct flight options were available I did not confirm anything as I wasn’t satisfied with new flights so I booked another direct flight, they decided to cancel my final flight to bhx without any notification removing me off the flight. When I asked why they said because I flew out of sequence. They asked me to pay another £365 for the flight I had already booked paid over £800 for these flights originally. They spoke to me like they didn’t care and refused to take any responsibility. My whole travel schedule was disrupted and the stress they gave me on top was a disgusting experience.

Do not book with them at all. I booked emirates flights through them which got cancelled due to storm in dubai. I called them,emailed them several times from abroad to rebook the flights but they didn't even talk to me properly. They were so rude over the phone and didn't even tell me what to do. Travelup aftercare is shocking

Travelup aftercare is shocking, i can not access my booking with the airline to add details to the booking because travelup have added their email and have refused to change it to my email, the airline sends an OTP code to the travelup email so i have no way of adding the detail i need. TravelUp customers have to contend with ever-changing T&Cs

Complaints from travellers claiming for a full refund spiral as they now face a £50 deduction

TravelUp has changed its terms and conditions since the pandemic and is retrospectively applying them to customers. It initially promised customers a full refund for cancelled flights. Then it imposed a fee of £75 per passenger plus a 2% charge. It subsequently changed that to £75 per booking, plus the 2% charge, then reduced it to £50 per booking. It’s now finally set up an online refund claim form, but that seems to require us to accept this fee.

Laments from TravelUp customers are echoing through my inbox and nearly 3,000 have joined a Facebook page dedicated to secure full refunds. Some have been faced with fees amounting to three figures that have almost eliminated the refunds remitted by the airlines. Until mid-April, the terms and conditions stated that a £75 per ticket fee applied if a customer cancelled or amended a ticket, whereas if the flight was cancelled by the airline they would receive a full refund “which we receive back from supplier/airline”.

In April a line was added, stating that when airlines refunded a flight they had cancelled, TravelUp would make an unspecified “deduction of credit/debit card (non-refundable) charges incurred by us at the time of the original booking and a small administration fee”. This fee turned out to be the £75 per head plus 2% of the ticket price.

In May, TravelUp’s CEO, Ali Shah, wrote to disgruntled customers announcing that the fee would be reduced to a flat rate of £50 and claimed that they had misinterpreted the initial promise of a full refund.

“Our terms and conditions originally stated that the customer was entitled to a full refund of what we receive back from the airline or supplier,” he stated. “This will never be the same as the amount you paid us when you booked, as this includes our service charges and we appreciate this has led to some customer confusion.”

Now the website’s FAQs are claiming that passengers who refuse to accept a rebooking or a credit note for a cancelled flight are deemed to have cancelled the flight themselves and are therefore requiring further service from TravelUp for which they must pay the £50.

The company’s contortions are troubling on many counts. Terms and conditions can’t be changed and retrospectively applied to bookings. It’s been illegal since 2018 to impose a surcharge for credit and debit card fees on customers. A fee of £75 per ticket plus a 2% charge – or even the new flat rate of £50 – is by no means “small” as claimed in the amended terms. And if the price charged for flights includes a service fee, as Shah states, this should be made clear at the time of booking and broken down before the payment stage.

TravelUp pointed me to a pre-existing clause half way down its terms and conditions which states that a “reasonable administration charge” will be deducted from refunds if a flight-only booking is cancelled by the airline. This is confusingly included under “Payments” rather than the section on cancellations and, since it gives no indication of what sum it regards as “reasonable”, customers would have no way of knowing what they were letting themselves in for.

Moreover, this term does not apply to accommodation-only bookings, yet PC of London says he was told that TravelUp would retain 25% of the refund for the cancelled hotel room he had booked. When he tried to claim a full refund via section 75, TravelUp disputed the claim and, by way of “evidence”, sent his card issuer the amended terms and conditions in which the right to charge a credit card fee and an administration charge had been added under the hotel cancellations section.

TravelUp was invited to comment on his case.

At the time of publication, nowhere on its website does TravelUp advise customers that they can apply direct to the airlines for a refund under Denied Boarding Regulations and thus save themselves the fee. Skyscanner, the online portal which directed many of the affected customers to TravelUp deals, told me that it has temporarily ceased its relations with the company because of its conduct. “We have been working closely with TravelUp to try to address our travellers’ complaints and concerns,” it says. “However, it’s clear that the unprecedented demands from Covid-19 cancellations, coupled with restricted customer service capacity from lockdown office closures, have meant that their customer service and refund processes are overwhelmed. We have therefore removed TravelUp from Skyscanner’s search results until such time as we are confident that they are back on top of things and that traveller cases have been resolved.”

Research by campaign group Which? has found that a number of travel companies are deducting legally questionable fees of up to £125 from customer refunds, while failing to explain their rights to claim direct from the airline. “Customers already left out of pocket by cancellations will be outraged to be told they need to pay to get their own money back,” says Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel. 

“The number of customers still waiting for the refunds they are legally entitled to is mounting, so the regulator must take action against any companies it finds breaking the law by failing to provide full refunds for cancelled package holidays.”

Carbon neutrality, zero waste and serving seafood solely from responsible suppliers: Many boutique eco-tourism destinations — particularly those catering to small numbers of luxury travelers — can reach or come close to sustainability goals such as these, but what about a decades-old resort company operating 97 properties across 14 countries?

As the global director of sustainability at Iberostar Group , Megan Morikawa is striving to prove that large travel operators can be better stewards of the planet. The Stanford-educated marine biologist is applying science to achieve these goals and more, such as helping the privately held hospitality company build coral research labs and use A.I.-powered trash cans to reduce kitchen waste.

In a nearly two-hour video conversation, Dr. Morikawa talked about her career pivot from academia to hospitality, the importance of collaboration across the travel industry and her new role for the Travel Foundation , a nonprofit providing destinations with sustainable-tourism research, strategy and training.

This conversation has been edited and condensed for clarity.

What led you to research coral reef die-offs for your doctorate?

Basically, the theme of my technical background is how we can use the technology of genetics and genomics to better conserve species on the planet.

My Ph.D. adviser, Stephen Palumbi, was focused on genetics, genomics and coral reefs. His whole proposition was: Could we find the world’s toughest corals, learn what makes them tough and use that to help predict winners and losers of climate change, so that managers could better understand how to restore reefs?

How did you end up in travel?

It was at the end of my Ph.D. when at Stanford I met Gloria Fluxá Thienemann, Iberostar’s vice chairman and chief sustainability officer. My adviser and I were scratching our heads asking, “What does a Spanish hotel owner have in terms of interest in our research?”

Our initial conversation showed that she was genuinely interested in the science. Gloria’s passion for the science of the oceans has facilitated so much of what we now do.

I moved from academia to Iberostar because really passionate people want to use the private sector to scale solutions for critical ecosystems, like coral reefs.

Iberostar now has three coral labs and seven underwater nurseries in three countries. How did that start?

The first year that I joined, we constructed our first coral lab at a property in the Dominican Republic. It would have taken us four or five years if we were doing this from an academic standpoint.

The coral lab is three things in one. It’s an outreach center, where guests and others can pop in and stumble upon seeing — for many of them — coral for the first time. But it’s also a genetic bank: Corals in the Caribbean are experiencing a lot of challenges, like widespread disease and bleaching events. Having a genetic bank is an important asset saving for genetic diversity. Our third objective is to recreate coral bleaching: The lab has a sophisticated system that recreates heating waves with small tanks so that we can stress individual corals, and predict winners and losers, just like I did for my Ph.D.

Iberostar has taken hotels off fossil fuels, partnered to create a waste-management system in Brazil and more. How is it making these changes?

The question is always around how you scale sustainability. Scaling is an interesting combination of being able to speak in a high-level strategy voice about say, business objectives, and then being able to translate that down to the actual actions that a hotel director needs to take.

Because it’s not just our executive leadership. From our operations to our procurement team to our head of human resources, we all recognize the risk climate change poses to our business. So the passion and enthusiasm to do something about it is there and was not what needed to be sparked.

Tell me about these trash cans.

We do a lot of work on our food waste — we serve around 45 million meals a year.

With our partnership with Winnow , an A.I. waste management company, we have placed devices in our kitchens that have an A.I.-assisted camera and scale that allows for chefs to spend the first month or so training the model on what the camera is seeing. Through time, the system automatically registers what is being wasted.

With that data, we can get feedback on those economic losses as well as carbon footprint losses. And finally, what is it that we are throwing away? And how can that help us to inform how we produce food the next day?

What are the top challenges to Iberostar’s sustainability goals?

Travel is made up of a bunch of different businesses in different sectors. And how that all joins together can be really difficult to understand — particularly in the role we all play in protecting natural resources. Because we are a beachfront resort company, when we see erosion and other impacts on those areas, it’s really clear and evident. But one of our excursion providers might not be thinking about it as much in their day-to-day.

As a scientist, I recognize that a lot of discovery of how to do things that have never been done before requires quick absorption of new materials and being able to speak multiple languages. And by that, I don’t mean linguistic languages; I mean speaking from a research standpoint to a government standpoint to a business standpoint. A lot of the barrier to collaboration was not being able to communicate effectively with each other.

Are any of these changes something a guest would see?

We somewhat boldly said we are demonstrating that a luxury hospitality experience does not require single-use plastics. What I like to say is that when you see a room that is free of single-use plastics, it’s kind of hard to unsee it. A lot of times it can be thought of — initially — as needing to remove items. But I think our operations team thought critically about ways to elegantly offer an experience that was a better product. So that’s probably the most tangible way that we can see that.

What is the purpose of the Travel Foundation?

The Travel Foundation is a U.K.-based NGO, providing research, strategy and support in their aim for tourism to provide the greatest benefits for every destination around the world, so local communities and environments can thrive. The role I’ve taken is chair of the board of trustees.

A recent research piece they published was looking at how to model pathways to reach net zero emissions, looking at aviation, transport and hotels. The Travel Foundation also supports destinations in producing management plans. For Lake Tahoe, in California, they’ve been doing great work to help the area think through its new boom in tourism and how residents can have a voice.

When it comes to changing human impact on the environment, what are steps that travelers could take?

One of the best things that tourists can do is to inject mindfulness into their decisions. I know it sounds really silly, but the more meaning that we draw from the choices that we make in our consumption, the more likely we’re able to maximize the value that comes from it and make them memorable experiences.

ESTA regulations for USA travel

U.S Customs and Border Protection have changed the procedure in applying for an ESTA and real-time approvals are no longer available.

It is the passenger’s responsibility to ensure they have made their application and have the authority to travel beforehand.

All passengers travelling under the VWP who do not have ESTA authorisation will not be permitted entry onto any flight by their carrier. We therefore highly recommend that travellers apply for their ESTA as soon as they've made arrangements for travel to the US.

How do I receive my tickets?

Below is a guide to the requirements that will be in place as well as advice to help passengers pass through the security check as quickly as possible.

Liquids that cannot be placed inside the re-sealable bag must be packed into the hold luggage and checked in. Liquids of any amount can still be carried in luggage checked into the aircraft hold.

Essential medicines and baby food may be permitted in larger quantities above the 100ml limit, but will be subject to the authentication that is already currently required.

Pushchairs, walking aids and wheelchairs are permitted but will be screened.

Laptops and other large electrical items (e.g. a large hairdryer) will still have to be removed from cabin baggage and screened separately. A laptop bag will be regarded as your one item that is allowed in the cabin.

All items of luggage which do not fit in the permitted cabin baggage size (maximum length 56 cm, width of 45 cm and depth of 25 cm) must be checked in to be placed in the aircraft hold. Musical instruments will, as an exception, be allowed as a second item of cabin baggage, but will need to be screened and passengers should check with their airlines if special arrangements (e.g. purchasing an extra seat) for these large instruments will be required.

Passengers are asked to bear in mind the following advice to help make their passage through the airport as efficient and comfortable as possible:

Duty free / departure lounge purchases may take on board liquid items of any size that are purchased after the security check in the departure lounge (sometimes referred to as 'Airside'). Duty free or similar purchases will be given to you in a special sealed bag. Do not open this bag until you have reached your final destination. You should also retain your proof of purchase throughout your journey. You will be required to show it at all transfer points. Please note: restrictions apply to duty free purchases made on return journeys where passengers change flights at an EU airport.

Travelling from an airport in the EU, Norway, Iceland or Switzerland: The arrangements outlined above will apply, except that larger cabin bags will be permitted on a transitional basis until April 2007.

If your journey involves changing flights at any EU airport, special restrictions apply. You may only take duty free purchases through the security check point at your connecting airport if they have been purchased at another EU airport, or on board an aircraft operated by an EU carrier. You will need to show proof of purchase to demonstrate this. Purchases from other airports or on board other airlines may only be carried as hold baggage on the connecting flight.
