West U Home Tour returns with 8 showcase residences

The West University Home Tour is making a return from 12 to 4 p.m. April 2, with eight luxury homes that event planners believe will be ahhh-inspiring.

Tickets are being sold for $45 (plus event fee) through an Event Brite link accessible here . Tiny’s No. 5, 3636 Rice Blvd., will be the gathering point for the tour, where those holding tickets will be given an event armband for entry and a map of locations.

The eight offerings range from classic to contemporary designs, including a “Modern Glass House,” “A Sustainable Modern Farmhouse,” and a “Haven for Art and Entertainment,” all featuring local builders, architects, interior and landscape designers, and Realtors.

Proceeds from ticket sales and a $25-per-ticket raffle will benefit the West University Elementary School. At the conclusion of the event, around 5 p.m., the raffle drawing will be held for a custom piece by native Houstonian, West U resident and WUES parent Travis Hedemann, whose work has been commissioned by celebrity collectors including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Reese Witherspoon.

Kate Doke is chairing the home tour, and Greenwood King is the title sponsor.

Eclectic west u home opens doors for new design and architectural tour.

Locals looking for a little design inspo can stroll into a charming dwelling this weekend. The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Texas Gulf Coast is opening the doors to its 2022 Show House in West University from December 15-18.

For those who enjoy home tours, this open house (located at 3807 Westerman St.) presents a rare chance to tour a more than 5,000-square-foot-home boasting intricate, cutting-edge, and even whimsical crafting.

Design pays homage to the tree-lined street, with natural finishes, plenty of existing light, and lots of luxury.

This Show House features 14 of Houston's top interior designers, all ASID members, with a space designed by chosen interior design students, according to press materials.

“It has been my honor to work alongside so many talented designers on the 2022 Show House,” said Victoria Sheffield, Show House event chair, in a press release. “Continuing supply chain challenges brought the opportunity to rely heavily on local vendors and craftspeople who represent our diverse and creative city so well. The marvelous craftsmanship of Sugar Creek Homes allowed the designers to implement many unique features. Please enjoy the tour and find some inspiration for your next project!”

Doors open at 10 am with the last entry at 4:30 pm. Tickets are $35 for adults and $15 for children under 12 and can be found online or at the door.

According to ASID, a portion of the ticket sales will be donated to Show House philanthropy partner AHA!, which benefits under-resourced children in the local community.

Design experts and real estate pros celebrate posh plumbing brand's houston return.

For many people, their homes are the largest and most significant investments they make. While a trusted broker is there to guide the selection of the initial investment, be sure not to overlook how certain designer finishes guarantee top-dollar when it’s time to sell — now, or one-hundred years from now. Choosing a designer with experience utilizing investment-worthy finishes certainly helps.

Ultra-luxe hotels and spas often inspire design for private homes, especially the bathrooms. Check the pulse of anyone who doesn’t let out an audible gasp when visiting any outpost of Soho House, one of the 27 Auberge Resort locations, or perhaps something closer to home, Houston’s own Lancaster Hotel. What these properties have in common is who they trust to do their outfitting — Waterworks .

Houston designers were devastated to lose our Waterworks showroom in 2009. After years of constant courtship by Elegant Additions owner Julie Koch, they have returned. The boutique Waterworks showroom could not be more at home in the historic building in the Heights that Elegant Additions occupies. Seeing the brand’s beautiful forms and finishes juxtaposed with the building’s exposed historical brickwork is just the classical vibe one expects from the 46-year-old plumbing institution. While the showroom is only open to the trade, designers, contractors, and builders can schedule appointments for clients who want to see these products before deciding to purchase them.

With little more than an arts background and a loan, Barbara Sallick founded Waterworks in 1978 inside her father’s pipe fitting outfit. Sallick’s vision of elevating plumbing fixtures into works of art has grown into the world famous and beloved brand known today. Completely customizable, the 27-step artisanal manufacturing process takes place in one of four countries: Italy, France, Portugal, or the UK — completely dependent on the collection. With an international reputation for quality, it’s safe to say that Sallick's risk has paid off.

Last Friday, designers and luxury real estate professionals were invited to welcome Waterworks back to Houston. Graciously co-hosted by Compass broker Caroline Bean and famed interior designer Paloma Contreras , Elegant Additions invited Miranda Ness, senior managing boutique partner for Waterworks, as keynote speaker for a morning salon focused on the company’s role within luxury property ROI. She noted its track record of a minimum $400 return for every $100 spent on Waterworks products.

Invitees enjoyed delectably curated bites by chef Jo Celestrini while mingling amongst themselves and their hosts. While neither Contreras nor Bean spoke during the event, each talked to CultureMap about the subject of brand recognition within the luxury home sphere.

“In the world of luxury real estate, high-end fixtures are more than just finishing touches; they are statements of quality that significantly enhance the value of a home,” Bean says. “When it comes time to list your home, these premium upgrades not only attract discerning buyers, but also ensure a higher return on investment, elevating your property to the next level.”

Contreras added her thoughts on why certain brands perform better than others. "Waterworks is a heritage brand that seamlessly merges timeless design with the highest quality. I know that when I specify Waterworks for my clients, they will be getting something that will stand the test of time.

“Their product assortment runs the gamut from classic to transitional to modern, so I can always find something to suit the projects I am working on. The fact that the brand has such distinct name recognition is the cherry on the sundae as my clients understand that they are making a solid investment in their homes."

Guests were generously sent home with a goody bag and a copy of Sallick’s coffee table book: The Ultimate Bath by Rizzoli . Leafing through it, one can see how fixtures truly are the jewelry of the home. If incorporating elegant, artisan crafted fixtures to a home in order to increase resale value, while introducing beauty, Waterworks is the way to go — ask any designer, especially Paloma Contreras.

Property Dreams: A Modern Home in West University

The West University area of Houston, also referred to as “West U,” is home to the renowned Rice Universit y and tree-lined streets with storybook homes. In fact, many of the streets are named after writers, such as Geoffrey Chaucer, Christopher Marlowe, and William Shakespeare. While most of the homes in this area are built with a traditional look and classic elements, we found a home with a modern twist—but still worth writing home about. 

The home was built in 2020 in the Pemberton section of West U and has 6 bedrooms and 6 full and 2 half bathrooms in its 6,449 square feet of living space. Aside from the clean lines and bright color scheme, you’ll have the luxury of a smart home with Control4 home automation and an electrical system wired with a generator and a car charger. Here’s a closer look.

The entry presents an open floor plan with a view straight into the family room, breakfast area, and bar. There are European white oak floors, premium stone accents, and metal-framed glass doors and windows.   

Placed strategically near the entry, a marble-topped island with antiqued-brass accents fronts a pass-through serving counter for welcome-home drinks. It has a bottle storage display cabinet that can be concealed with a remote-controlled hydraulic lift.

The downstairs area of the home serves as a large gathering venue, with the kitchen, dining area, and living room in the same space. A short distance from the bar is a seating room with a fireplace as its focal point, as well as large windows looking out onto the backyard. 

A more formal and secluded dining area, tucked near the entry of the home, has a fireplace and a showpiece wine vault. The ceiling is box-beamed and coffered; added luxury comes from a Marc Jacobs wall-mounted light fixture. 

The kitchen blends modern and timeless elements with classic white cabinets and marble countertops and backsplash. There are window displays above the cabinets for cherished pieces, such as grandma’s porcelain dishware or wedding glasses. The center island has a prep sink and is anchored by a gold hanging light fixture. 

The pantry and storage area provide additional counter space, windows, and—for us caffeine snobs—a built-in coffee bar.

The primary suite has a beautiful vaulted ceiling, double entry doors from the hallway, and custom window drapes. 

Since we’re dreaming, let’s throw in a morning bar located just before the double doors leading to the en suite primary bathroom: say goodbye to the 1 a.m. pros-and-cons lists on whether a trip downstairs for water is worth leaving your bed. In this new life, we drink sparkling water from the under-counter beverage refrigerator and store snacks in the wall-mounted cabinets. 

The marble-and-white theme continues in the primary bathroom, where you’ll feel like you left home for a visit to the spa. There’s also a posh chandelier above a Victoria + Albert soaking tub, which is near a recessed window alcove. The bathroom leads to a stunning walk-in closet with tons of storage space. 

The backyard has multiple patio areas for an evening with guests. You’ll dine alfresco under the gazebo by the fireplace, then catch the latest Astros game on the patio while the kids play in the turfed green space.

West University Show House Lets 14 Top Interior Designers Run Wild With Imagination — Stepping Into a Creative Wonderland

How to tour a houston house like no other.

W hat happens when 14 interior designers tackle a spanking new 5,000-square-foot home, each putting their best talents forward in designated spaces? One’s imagination is surely piqued. And that will be the result for those who take a look-see at the American Society of Interior Designers Show House now open at 3807 Westerman Street in West University.

How about a life-sized horse topped by a lamp with lampshade? Or a colorful handful of super-sized jacks scattered across one wall? Or the playroom whimsically lighted with a dozen floating Japanese lanterns?

These are just a few of the entertaining design notes to be found in this West University house.

The tour of the house by Sugar Creek Homes continues through December 11 and resumes December 15 through December 18, from 10 am to 5 pm each day with the last entry at 4:30 pm.

“ ASID Texas Gulf Coast Chapter is excited to have our first Show House since 2019 and be able to showcase Houston’s interior design talent along with our industry partners in the design and build community,” ASID TXGC president Candice Rogers says. “This project is a true testament of what can be achieved when builders, designers and industry partners work together to build a client’s dream home.”

UPDATE: New NWEA EOY Testing Dates

NWEA Math EOY testing for grades K-5 will be on Tuesday, May 28th followed by the NWEA RLA EOY test on Wednesday, May 29th for grades 2-5 only. Also for grades 2-5 only, NWEA EOY Science testing will occur on Thursday, May 30th.

The West University Home Tour - 2011

+After being on hiatus for several years, the West University Home Tour is finally back!   The 2011 tour, benefiting the West University Elementary School and chaired by Holly Cauble and co chaired by Carlin Morstead, is this Sunday, May 1, from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm.   House stalkers take note: seven of West U’s most interesting houses will be open to the public.   This is one of the better tours in Houston since the houses are chosen because they are wonderfully decorated as opposed to being just the biggest or the newest house in the neighborhood.  Most houses this year are either  owned by interior designers – or were decorated by one of Houston’s premier designers.    I’m partial to the West U Home Tour because I live here and have attended it many times.   One year the tour was particularly costly for me.  After going through a beautiful Kurt Aichler house that had all white slipcovers, I came back home and of course, hated my fabrics.   The following day, I sent all my upholstery out to be covered in white linen slipcovers too – and I’ve never looked back.     I know I’m not the only one who takes inspiration from this tour – just listen to what the people next to you are saying!   As you might imagine,  I was thrilled when Holly asked me to take pictures of all the houses – it was like giving me a free pass for major house stalking!!    Today, I’m just going to show one room from each house – sort of a teaser to get you motivated to come out this Sunday.  After the tour is over, several of the homeowners are allowing me to show their entire house for those readers who don’t live in Houston.    Enjoy!!     1.  Sally and Mark Wheat – 2642 Tangley.                                                                             

The first house is no stranger to Cote de Texas readers.   Ever since I first showcased this house, Sally’s kitchen has inspired countless kitchen remodelings.   The first time I went to Sally’s house it was all Belgian and French inspired with lots of gray and linen.  I was slightly amazed to see how much the house has changed since then.  Sally has completely redecorated her downstairs, using such mid century iconic pieces such as Milo Baughman dining room chairs and a Serge Mouille inspired lighting fixture in the living room.   The changes are striking and so fresh for today.  The only room that remains unchanged is her famous gray kitchen!!

      Yes, this is Sally Wheat’s newly decorated living room.   David Hicks fabric covers two Parson styled chairs and a Serge Mouille light fixture replaces a table lamp.  I’m crazy over the art work of Queen Elizabeth – it really sets the tone for the entire house.  If you are inspired by Sally’s kitchen – now is your chance to see it live and in person!!     2. Linda and Bob Walker – 2931 Albans     The Walker’s house stunning steel window and front door set this stucco house apart and hint at the sophisticated design that is inside.   The house is filled with a lifetime collection of antique furniture and accessories.  Flowing from the front door is a center hall that runs throughout the house and ends at the spacious family room.  A large garden that doubles as an outside room lets light flow throughout the first level.   The breakfast room sits in a window filled space that becomes part of the garden.  It is across from the totally remodeled kitchen.  Linda’s sister Ann Andrews helped with the interiors.  My favorite room is the dining room which doubles as the library.   This multipurpose space has floor to ceiling bookcases which create a welcoming atmosphere.    The house has great ideas for empty nesters to incorporate into their own home.     The family room in greens and blues is an eclectic mix of antiques and contemporary pieces.   The gorgeous fireplace is 18th century French and the rug is 21st century Jonathan Adler.     A Rose Tarlow print covers the sofa in the second seating area of the elegant family room.  I really loved this house – it’s so elegant and pretty and bright!     3.  Mary Jane and Mike Gallagher – 2631 Barbara Lane.     The Gallagher’s ivy clad house is an original to this street, built in the 1930s.   The house is filled with beautiful antique furniture and large, oversized accessories that become focal points.   Mary Jane is an interior designer and she favors a sparse European look in lieu of the English cluttered look.  The rooms flow together visually and aesthetically.   Though the house is quite stunning on its own,  it’s the newly built guest house casita in the back yard that steals the show and is worth the price of admission!  Designed by Houston great, Kurt Aichler, the casita features a dramatic, two story dining room which overlooks the gardens and the main house.  I have a feeling that everyone is going to rush home to see if they can build a casita like this in their own backyard!  Not to be missed!!   Mary Jane’s living room is sparingly furnished – she lets the accessories, like the oversized concrete statue, take center stage.   A study in browns and white, this color scheme runs throughout the downstairs and even into the casita.  I am in LOVE with that painting!!!   I just love this house.  Here, is the other side of the living room.  I soooo wish I could show you the casita too!   It’s fabulous!!       4.  Mary Lynn and Dave Mannon- 2708 Pemberton     This house is located on the one of the prettiest boulevards in West University, a reminder of a more gracious time when large houses were built on estate sized lots.  The Mannon’s house was totally restored by architect Kirby Mears, while designer Eleanor Cummings has created its magazine-worthy interiors.   It’s colors are in soothing grays and creams which act as a backdrop to a beautiful collection of antiques.  Despite its graciousness, the house is a family home to four young children and reaffirms that kids and antiques can co-inhabit.   This house is creating a lot of buzz as no pre-tour pictures are available.   I’m so sorry there aren’t interior pictures, but everyone has told me this house is a knock-out.       5.  Margaret Ann and Chad McEver – 3928 Marlowe St.       Margaret Ann, interior designer, and her husband Chad bought this 1992 rather typical West U house and turned it into something quite special.   She added a front entry hall where there was none and put in a steel front door that completely updates the façade for the new century.   The kitchen was totally remodeled as was the master bathroom.   The house is decorated with touches of Mid Century modern mixed in with European antiques.  I loved touring this house and looking at all the touches McEver has added.   Everywhere you turn, there are ideas to take home to update a house.   Margaret is a great talent – she’s young, but her portfolio is already incredible.     Margaret installed this steel door and placed antique wood doors inside for privacy, when needed.  These steel doors makes such a huge difference to the exterior and interior both.  They are stunning!       The living room is a nod to Hollywood glam.  Filled with contemporary art work and a collection of chairs from different eras, it sets the tone for the rest of the house.   Bring a pad to write down all the ideas you could incorporate if you are looking to update a builder’s West U home from the 90s.  This house is filled with them!     6.  Laurie and John Pearson – 3415 Albans     The Pearson's house, located on a double lot, is the largest house on the tour.  Laurie, an interior designer, moved here with her husband and children from New Orleans after the devastation of Katrina.   Today, they are completely settled into their new life in West University.    The front door opens to a two story entry with a gracious winding staircase.   The public rooms are dressy with luscious silk taffeta curtains and an array of beautiful fabrics.    The spacious house has a nice spread-out feel to it, something that is quite rare for the typical town sized lots in West. U.   The remodeled family room and kitchen, done in a deep taupe,  overlooks a southern styled screened in porch and swimming pool.   The master bedroom is especially beautiful in all cream and ivory with hints of celadon.    The house is wonderfully decorated with an amazing attention to detail, there is so much to see here and admire.         The living room, though dressy, is inviting and warm.   Laurie has an unerring eye for detail – note the sofa with its scalloped trim and nailheads.  The curtains are luscious silk taffeta.  Here, and throughout the house, color is found in contemporary art work and in the area rug.     Looking at the other side of the living room, a piano sits in an attached niche.  Everything is so beautiful – there is elegance everywhere your eye falls.      7.  Heidi Dugan – 2735 Arbuckle Street       Popular Houston real estate agent Heidi Dugan wanted her new stucco house to have a decidedly Provencal atmosphere.  Judging from the façade alone, Heidi got the French inspired look she wanted.  Interior Designer Ginger Barber used authentic architectural elements such as antique lanterns and shutters, wood beams, and European floors to create this European aesthetic.    The interiors are beautifully furnished with an array of casually slipcovered linens mixed with elegant antique furniture and accessories.   The standout is the back yard by Thompson Hanson with its limestone fountain, swimming pool and dining area.   This becomes an extra room and will, no doubt, be a favorite on the tour.          I couldn’t decide which room to show you from Heidi’s house – each one is prettier than the next.  But – her dining room is especially beautiful with its crystal chandelier and trumeau.  I love the fabric on the chairs and all the gilt!  Soooo gorgeous.  You are going to love, love, love this house!!!!    I hope you have enjoyed seeing a glimpse of all the houses.  I am just dying to show you all the rooms!   Each house is prettier than the next and each has so many ideas to take home with you!   Look here in the coming weeks for more pictures of these houses.  If you are in Houston, be sure to attend this Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm.     $25 advance tickets are available at Rice Epicurean Markets Information Desk, Antiques & Interiors on Dunlavy, ABEJAS and the West University Elementary School office. I'm so excited to see the rest of these homes! If I lived in Houston, I would be there in a heartbeat. This neighborhood reminds me so much of Highland Park where I grew up.

There is something about the Margaret Ann home that has me coming back for a second look. The steel entry door and warm wooden interior privacy doors, I've not seen anything quite like it. I love seeing all of the artwork in the homes as well. This would be so fun to see in person.

I toured these homes this weekend and all are lovely. The house with interiors by Eleanor Cummings was such a stand out. You can really tell when a master's hand has been through a space. It had such subtle sophistication. Great tour!

The Florida Gators won the 2024 SEC softball conference tournament on May 11 at Jane B. Moore Field in Auburn, Alabama. The Gators defeated No. 5 Missouri to claim their sixth SEC tournament championship and tie Alabama for most conference tournament wins in program history.

The Gators earn an automatic bid into the 2024 NCAA tournament bracket, which will be revealed Sunday, May 12 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2. We're tracking all the automatic DI softball qualifiers and conference tournaments here.
