Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

So I went to The  French Quarter , one of New Orleans’ most historic neighborhoods known for its rich history, beautiful architecture, and charming atmosphere.

The colorful streets filled with live music in the air and the distinctive French and Spanish colonial architecture dating back to the 1700s make it one of the top things to do in New Orleans at night.

You might be amazed to know that the neighborhood of the French Quarters is renowned for its haunted locations and ghostly legends.

Hotel Monteleone is one such place, with reports of a restaurant door that mysteriously opens and closes on its own, even when locked.

Another intriguing spot is the Bottom of the Teacup Psychic Readings, a house on Royal Street where sightings of a woman from the 1800s have been reported.

DRINK WITH GHOSTS AT JEAN LAFITTE’S BLACKSMITH SHOP

By this time, I was pretty much aware that New Orleans had enough ghostly tales to keep my spine-chilling adventure on.

Because I visited Jean Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop on 941 Bourbon Street, one of the historic and oldest bars in the country, dating back to the 1770s.

This iconic establishment on the list of National historic landmarks holds tales of the notorious pirate and smuggler, Jean Lafitte, who is believed to haunt the premises still.

Jean Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop was refurbished in the mid-1940s, making it a hub for the city’s bohemian clientele and the thriving subculture of the gay community at the time.

FREE THINGS TO DO IN NEW ORLEANS AT NIGHT

Walk along the moonwalk.

I was looking for things to do in New Orleans today for free and found out about the lovely promenade, the Moonwalk.

This illuminated stretch of brick walkway alongside the mesmerizing Mississippi River is a sight at night.

It creates a captivating visual display, making it one of the peaceful New Orleans things   to do at night.

Stroll along this beautiful stretch and check out the vantage points to witness sites such as Jackson Square, Harrah’s Casino, the Joan of Arc Statue and the Steamboat Natchez.

PLAY WITH THE CATS AT JACKSON SQUARE

Prepare yourself for a night in New Orleans filled with a purr-fectly peculiar phenomenon that unfolds after dark!

Picture this: as the Sun sets and the night creeps in, a secret cat society assembles at none other than Jackson Square.

Yes, you read it right! Cats from all corners of the city assemble for their mysterious feline meetings.

tours in new orleans night

Nobody knows for sure what draws them to this particular park, but it looks like they have formed their very own kitty club.

Is it the allure of the moonlight or some whisker-twitching conspiracy that brings them together?

We may never unravel the truth, but one thing’s for sure – this is a gathering you won’t want to miss, and that too for free.

This quirky and amusing escapade left me wondering, “What on earth do these cats talk about under the moonlight?”

SWAY TO THE STREET MUSIC

If you cannot make it to any one of the pubs or shows for a musical evening, don’t worry.

There are always some people performing, which will make your evening delightful.

Stroll along the Frenchmen or Bourbon Street, and you will find the local budding artists playing some well-known tunes.

Alternatively, you can visit places like Jackson Square, Audubon Park, French Market, Washington Square Park and the New Orleans Riverfront to witness and catch up with the local artists.

VISIT THE PALACE MARKET

While I was scouting the city for souvenirs and some art collections for my interiors back home, I stumbled upon Palace Market, one of the largest open art markets in New Orleans on Frenchmen Street.

They feature various artefacts and artworks created by over 100+ budding artists in 38 booths.

The best part is that they have a rotating list which ensures each artwork is displayed for an equal amount of time.

tours in new orleans night

Although you don’t have to pay anything to browse, you might be tempted to purchase some brilliant pieces.

Another main draw of the Palace Market is its timings; the market will typically be open until midnight.

You’re likely to see all kinds of street performers and other interesting faces as you wander around the French Quarter.

In fact, this free activity is arguably the best thing to do at night in the French Quarter.

If you’re looking for more places to take in the nightlife of this city, consider visiting some of the following locations:

  • Jackson Square
  • Audubon Park
  • French Market
  • Magazine Street
  • Washington Square Park
  • New Orleans Riverfront

5. Visit the Jackson Square Cats

When the sun goes down, Jackson Square tends to fill up with cats from all over the city.

Nobody knows exactly why they’ve chosen this park as their home, but something keeps them coming back every night.

Whatever the reasons behind this, cat lovers may want to take a chance and visit the park at night to see if they can spot any feline friends.

For more fun things to see and do in the area, check out our post about Jackson Square .

6. Check Out Palace Market

If you’re interested in seeing some of the artwork created by locals, the Palace Market is an absolute must.

They have a rotating list of over 100+ artists who create and sell a variety of items for visitors.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Cali Marlene (@slifecali)

You don’t have to pay anything to walk through the market and just take a look at everything creative on display, but don’t be surprised if you are tempted to pull out your wallet!

The Palace Market is open until midnight or later 7 days a week and is located on the live-music rich Frenchmen Street .

7. Visit the Mardi Gras Museum

Most museums aren’t open late, and they aren’t free – but there is one, the Mardi Gras Museum, which you can visit at night without paying a thing.

Arnaud’s Restaurant has an exhibit featuring several historic artifacts from throughout Mardi Gras history in the 20th Century.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jesse Cortez (@whatwouldjessedo)

Guests don’t even have to pay for a meal to see this museum and it is open during the restaurant’s operational hours (until 10 pm on most nights).

Click here for a list of additional museums and attractions in New Orleans that are free to visit.

8. Enjoy Free Seasonal Music Events

In addition to the live musicians you’ll often find in the French Quarter, there are also several free seasonal music events throughout the year.

Keep an eye out for the following opportunities:

  • Wednesdays in the Park – Spring
  • Jazz in the Park – Early Summer
  • Music Under the Oaks – Spring
  • Bon Operatit! – At least one show per month

9. Learn How to Jitterbug

If you really want to get involved and experience the culture of New Orleans, this may be one of the best free activities in the city.

The NOLA Jitterbugs provide a free dance class every week which you can drop in and attend without paying a dime.

Learn how to dance the Jitterbug while listening to a live jazz band for free at the Allways Lounge every Sunday at 8 pm.

10. Take a Fun and Affordable Ride

Although they aren’t free, tickets for both the streetcars and the ferry are very cheap ($3).

Visitors who choose to hop on the streetcar can ride around the French Quarter in style while enjoying the sights and sounds of this historic district.

It’s also a handy way to get around town, with stops very close to several popular destinations.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Katee Bolt (@kateebolt)

The Algiers Point ferry offers a great low-price alternative to the typical riverboat cruise.

Hop on and see New Orleans from the water when the sun goes down to experience the skyline from afar.

While you're at it, grab a few more than-affordable beignets at Café du Monde !

THINGS TO DO AT NIGHT WITH KIDS

Thankfully, there are several fun activities you can enjoy with the kids in New Orleans after the sun sets.

Several items listed in the other sections of this post are great for kids.

Be sure to read our master post on family-friendly things to do in NOLA .

1. Mini Golf at City Putt

City Park has a lot of fun and interesting attractions that you can check out during the day, but one of the best places to visit at night is City Putt .

This mini golf center has two courses and is open until 10 pm.

This is a fun and affordable activity for families, with tickets ranging from $8 for kids to $10 for teens and adults.

While you're in the area, consider checking out the Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden, which is free to the public.

For more information on this and other activities in the area, check out our guide to visiting City Park .

2. Light up the Night on a Bike Ride

Riding a bike at night can be dangerous if people can’t see you, but that isn’t a problem with the NOLA City Lights !

Their bikes are covered in LED lights, making it easy for pretty much everyone to see them from afar.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Nola City Lights (@nolacitylights)

As if that weren’t good enough, they also play music and have a loud horn/siren.

Enjoy a unique trip with your family and see New Orleans after dark while riding around on these interesting bicycles.

3. See a show at the WW2 Museum

Aside from being one of the best and most respected museums in New Orleans, the National WWII Museum also hosts several shows at BB’s Stage Door Canteen.

Several of their shows can be very family-friendly.

They usually host at least one show per month (sometimes per week) that takes place in the evening, making this a good option for family fun after the sun sets.

Check out our post on the National WW2 Museum for more information.

4. Attend an Event at the Superdome

Even when football isn’t in season, they still manage to find some pretty awesome events to throw at the Superdome.

These attractions can range from concerts to festivals, but they usually center around musical acts.

They also host expos and conventions for a variety of different industries which may be of interest to some visitors.

Keep an eye on the Superdome calendar for more details.

5. Take a Ghost Tour

If your children are getting a little older, you might want to consider taking them on a spooky tour around New Orleans.

This is a city rich with creepy history, and you can learn a lot about it by taking our pay-what-you-wish ghost walking tours.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Michelle Faucheux (@michellefaucheux)

There is also a Ghost + Vampire Tour , which is free for kids under 7 and pretty affordable for everyone else.

Each of these tours takes place in the evening, and brave families will probably have a great time exploring the city and seeing everything from a more haunting point of view.

Make sure to read our post about New Orleans ghost tours for more information.

6. Take the Kids Bowling

Although Rock n’ Bowl can be fun for a dinner date, it’s also an excellent place for families.

Alternatively, you can also head down to Fulton Alley near Harrah’s Casino and enjoy a round of bowling.

This is a classic pastime that is fun for all ages and tons of fun after the sun goes down.

7. Grab a Beignet After Dinner

These delightful pastries are a wonderful treat at any time of the day, but you might want to consider grabbing one for dessert.

Depending on how and where you get them, you can order a beignet with flavors as simple and delicious as chocolate, or as adventurous as crab & crawfish.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Linda Minutola (@ladylunanola)

One of the most popular places to find this dish is Cafe du Monde , located in the heart of the French Quarter just across the street from Jackson Square.

For more information, read our post about beignets and where to find them !

8. Friday Nights at NOMA

Sometimes it can be difficult to keep the kids entertained while at a museum, but the New Orleans Museum of Art makes it pretty easy on Friday nights.

This event includes live music, tours, screenings, performances, and artistic activities.

Children are invited to make a unique keepsake every week. Sometimes they even host book signings, featured artists and demonstrations.

9. Take the Kids Out for Dinner

There are several family-friendly restaurants and cafes in New Orleans, but some of them are more popular than others.

One of the best options for kids dining is Dat Dog, a location that offers up some of the most unique hot dogs you’ll ever eat.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lisa V 📸 (@dayzifyadonola)

With over 30 different toppings to choose from, chances are that everyone in your family will find something they love at this restaurant.

For additional ideas, make sure to check our list of kid-friendly restaurants in New Orleans .

10. Enjoy Live Jazz at Preservation Hall

There are a lot of jazz clubs in NOLA, but most of them aren’t exactly family-friendly.

If you want to introduce your kids to this wonderful music, Preservation Hall is going to be one of the best places to visit.

This is an all-ages venue that does not provide food or beverages, only wonderful jazz music for all their guests.

Shows start as early as 5 pm with the last show at 10 pm.

Click here to learn more about this historic New Orleans jazz hall!

SEASONAL NIGHTTIME NEW ORLEANS ACTIVITIES

In addition to all the fun evening events and activities that you can enjoy throughout the year in NOLA, there are also several interesting things to do at night during specific seasons.

Here are a few of the best examples:

Audubon Zoo Lights

During the holiday season (November - December), the Audubon Zoo offers several festive lighting displays that you can enjoy after the sun goes down.

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival

Every spring, the historic Jazz Festival returns to New Orleans, typically inviting some of the best musicians in the world to perform live entertainment.

Although most performances take place during the day, the festival typically runs until at least 7 pm.

Celebration in the Oaks

Much like Zoo Lights, this light festival takes place every holiday season (November - December), and you can expect to see a lot of beautiful lighting displays lining the trees of City Park .

Best of all, if you take the walking tour, you'll also enjoy unlimited rides in Carousel Gardens Amusement Park, as well as access to the Botanical Garden.

This might seem like an obvious example, but Mardi Gras parades typically take place after sundown from January - February.

Even if you can't make it to NOLA for this event, you can still see some of the floats at Mardi Gras World !

French Quarter Festival

Similar to Jazz Fest, this is another excellent music festival that takes place in New Orleans every spring (typically in April).

While most performances are during the day, the official hours for this festival run to 8 pm each night.

TOP MUSIC AND FOOD VENUES

There are a lot of great restaurants and music venues in New Orleans. Be sure to read about the 13 must-try NOLA foods and our food tours .

Here is a list of our top 10 locations to grab a bite and listen to live music.

1. BB King’s

It should come as no surprise that this jazz legend has his very own restaurant in New Orleans.

In addition to hosting several live shows every week, they also serve up some of the best food you’ll find in the city.

Expect a variety of southern favorites including po’ boys, jambalaya and peach cobbler for dessert!

2. The House of Blues

What better place to hear the blues than at the house that was named after the genre?

Most people come here for live concerts, but this venue also doubles as an excellent restaurant with several delicious menu items.

Guests can enjoy southern meals such as jambalaya, blackened salmon, shrimp & grits, and more.

This is one of the more popular family restaurants in New Orleans. In addition to some great food, they also provide live Cajun music every night.

If you’re looking for a place with more local flavor, this is it! Menu items include gumbo, po'boys, jambalaya, and red beans & rice.

4. Rock n’ Bowl

This is one of the best family-friendly locations in the entire city.

Not only do they have a bowling alley, but they also have live music, dancing, and a pretty decent selection of food.

Although they don’t focus primarily on Cajun cuisine or any other southern favorites, they do have classic American staples such as pizza, burgers, and fries.

5. The Spotted Cat

This popular music club hosts a variety of jazz musicians on a nightly basis.

Visitors should know that this isn’t a restaurant and they don’t specialize in providing anything other than great tunes throughout the night.

There is no cover charge and there are no reservations, so you might want to get there early before the club fills up!

6. Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro

As the name implies, this location specializes in providing live jazz every night of the week.

In addition to some great music, they also offer an impressive menu full of delectable meals.

Choose from entrees such as filet mignon, yellowfin tuna, fried oysters or fish Marigny.

7. Cafe du Monde

Although they don’t really offer any live music, Cafe du Monde is one of the most popular coffee shops to grab a drink and a snack.

Located right across the street from Jackson Square, it’s easy to hop in there while walking around the French Quarter and sightseeing.

8. Balcony Music Club

Otherwise known as the BMC, this club is yet another excellent place where you can listen to some great jazz every night of the week.

This location also has several signature drinks that you can try while listening to music. Try a Satchmo Sangria or Billie Holiday for some local flavor!

9. Verti Marte

Whether you’re trying to sober up or you just want to grab a bite to eat, this 24-hour deli provides a variety of tasty treats all day and night.

Their specialty is a po’ boy with fried shrimp and oysters. Even if you don’t feel like walking down to the Verti Marte, you can still order these sandwiches for delivery!

10. Camellia’s Grill

If you’re looking for fast and fantastic service, it’s hard to beat Camellia’s Grill.

Some visitors report that it can take as little as ten minutes to receive your order and the food is to die for.

This popular diner serves up American classics and New Orleans favorites for locals and visitors of all kinds.

You’ll find this restaurant right off the St. Charles Streetcar line.

Honorable Mentions

Here are a few additional diners/pubs that you may want to consider.

Coop’s Place

Grab some cajun food or get traditional southern fried chicken at this New Orleans staple late into the night.

Due to the “snarky” attitude from the staff (which is half the fun), this location is only open to customers who are 21 & older.

Clover Grill

If you’re looking for another 24-hour diner, this is one of the best places in the city.

The menu is simple and the food is delicious – what more could anyone ask for?

This popular New Orleans pub is open late and serves a variety of great local food such as gumbo, po’boys, and fried mushrooms.

They are open late and offer delivery!

Cooter Brown’s

This sports bar offers 17 different TVs with sporting events of all kinds.

They have over 400 beers on tap, raw oysters for the seafood fans, and some of the best pub grub in NOLA.

SAFETY AT NIGHT IN NEW ORLEANS

When traveling to New Orleans we would like to help you make the best decisions to make your visit to the Big Easy as comfortable and safe as possible.

Can you walk in New Orleans at Night?

It is best, if possible, to travel with a companion when walking the streets of the French Quarter at night.

It may be safe to update a friend, or family member, where you are headed when traveling from one location to another.

Most hotels and tourist booths provide free maps of the city.  Consult with them and have them let you know of the safest streets and routes for foot traffic.

Is it safe to walk to Frenchmen Street from the French Quarter?

We suggest Royal Street and Decatur Street. If you are carrying a purse, wear it across the chest strap, if your camera has a strap wear it the same way, pickpockets are in every city.

We suggest wearing sensible shoes in New Orleans, as the sidewalks are very old and uneven.

Make sure that you are aware when crossing the streets. Often intersections do not have pedestrian stop and walk symbols at intersections with traffic lights.

Bourbon Street and Royal Street are the only two French Quarter streets to be closed to foot traffic only.  So, when walking and looking at all of the beauty of the Quarter be careful.

Is there a party on Bourbon Street every night?

Technically yes, as this area is popular almost all year long. There are times when it isn't as busy on Bourbon Street, but you should always be careful while walking around this area at night.

Uber and Lyft are great options to keep yourself safe when in the city. Cabs and Taxis can often take more than 30 minutes to arrive, whereas ride shares take moments.

Make sure when they pull up that the driver and license plate match the info on your app.

I booked this tour for my mom and dad (the haunted evening tour) because of all the great reviews! My parents are picky but they had nothing but great things to say about their tour. They said their driver/guide was friendly, knowledgeable and gave them some inside stories about the hotel they were staying in, and that personal touch made them feel special! Looking forward to booking my own tour when I visit NOLA again.

Tour guide speaking to group

Over 20 Years of Excellence!

The owner was very helpful in booking our tour. Cedric was hands down amazing!!!! He made the tour very fun, and if I go back and take another tour, I want him as my tour guide!!! Spooky and informative, we learned a lot about the ghosts and graveyards of New Orleans!! This is a must do tour if you go to NOLA, and make sure you get Cedric!

Rose was a wonderful guide, very knowledgeable and passionate about her subject. She went really deep describing folklore, historical, societal, and cultural origins of vampires that mirror our fears and perceptions reflecting it back to us. All of these were done in a way that made us able to relate and think deep about who we are.

I highly recommend this tour if you want to dig a little deeper and learn what New Orleans was and is all about and how it came to be the city we see nowadays. Thus a very, very interesting tour given by Toast, who's is an excellent storyteller, with a solid knowledge of history, funny anecdotes and music.

We toured with Toast (yes tour guide was named Toast), who was absolutely amazing. He told us numerous different stories of the area including hauntings and other parts of New Orleans history. He was incredibly entertaining and the two hours flew by. We went to several different graveyard sites as well as a local park and the old Charity Hospital.

We booked the French Quarter Ghost Tour and it was so much fun. Katrice was an absolute professional when dealing with less than ideal participants and the general rowdy public. She was engaging, educational, and the highlight of our night. We loved hearing the history and the stories as we walked the quarter.

The 9 Best New Orleans Voodoo Tours

1. nola voodoo walking tour with high priestess guide in new orleans.

The best Voodoo tour in New Orleans is, hands down, the Nola Voodoo Walking Tour , as a High Priestess of Louisiana Plantation Vodou leads your tour.

The guides are authentic and respectful of the religion. They provide so much knowledge about Voodoo’s history and roots in New Orleans.

The guides have traced their lineage and bloodlines back hundreds of years. Their connection to Voodoo in New Orleans is incredible. This is the perfect tour in New Orleans to learn about Voodoo history.

New Orleans has a lot of Voodoo history, and the tour takes you to Congo Square, the French Quarter and Louis Armstrong Park, where you will hear all about the people who helped create New Orleans Voodoo.

The tour explores misinformation about Voodoo. It goes over how to respect and worship deities, why people leave specific offerings and the truth about Voodoo dolls. If you are interested in Voodoo history in New Orleans and only have time for one tour, make it this one.

2. Adults Only Voodoo History Guided Walking Tour in New Orleans

The Voodoo History Guided Walking Tour by Hottest Hell Tours is the best New Orleans Voodoo Tour for adults.

The tour also stops at Conjure New Orleans, an occult shop dedicated to Voodoo. I also recommend getting a tarot reading here after the tour.

This is by far the best Voodoo Tour in New Orleans

If you want to learn about New Orleans’s Voodoo history, you must take this tour. The tour is well done and well researched, and the Voodoo history is accurate.

You will leave this tour with a better understanding of Voodoo and learn about people like Sanite Dede, who was an essential person in the Voodoo community before Marie Laveau.

The tour starts at Rev. Zombie’s Voodoo Shop and takes you to Bourbon Street to dispel myths about Voodoo. It also takes you to the Voodoo altars on Royal Street.

While all of the tour guides were fantastic, Brie was my favourite tour guide as she knew her history and had personal stories that she shared during the tour.

The New Orleans Voodoo History Walking Tour lets you know the truth behind Voodoo in New Orleans versus what Hollywood may have taught you.

If you want to know everything there is to know about Voodoo, the New Orleans Voodoo History Walking Tour is one of the best Voodoo tours in New Orleans.

8. New Orleans Voodoo, Storyville, Treme, Walking Tour

If you are looking for a unique Voodoo Walking Tour that visits sites other Voodoo Tours miss, the New Orleans Treme, Storyville, Cemetery, and Voodoo Walking Tour is for you.

The Tour takes you to various sites around New Orleans and fills you with stories about the reality of Voodoo and Voodoo-related myths. The Voodoo walking tour details how enslaved people created New Orleans Voodoo through ancient West African religious beliefs and Roman Catholicism.

The tour by Historic New Orleans Tours is more than just Voodoo. If you want a black history tour of New Orleans, I highly recommend this tour. You will experience the Treme neighbourhood full of Creole and African-American culture.

The tour includes visiting the Storyville District and Congo Square. This is a gathering place of enslaved people who created jazz and helped make New Orleans culture what it is today.

The tour visits the oldest surviving church in New Orleans – Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and Louis Armstrong Park, named after jazz legend Louis Armstrong.

Two other sites in New Orleans that are important to Black history include the St. Augustine Church. This is the oldest Black Catholic Parish in the country. It ends with a stop at the tomb of an unknown enslaved person at the Backstreet Cultural Museum. This memorial is the only one of its kind in the United States.

Bucket list on a budget: Travel New Orleans without breaking the bank

VIDEO: Take a bucket list trip to New Orleans and stay on budget

The Big Easy is a bucket list destination for fun-seekers. With live music and jazz echoing through the streets, delicious French and Creole cuisine -- serving everything from beignets and po' boy sandwiches to French 75 cocktails -- there's an abundance of must-do activities in New Orleans.

tours in new orleans night

But living it up in the Crescent City can get costly if you're not careful, so "Good Morning America" scoped out the best way to enjoy bayou country on a budget.

If you're pinching pennies, see all the ways you can still let the good times roll, below.

Getting there

Airfare prices to New Orleans, like most destinations, can vary depending on the time of year, but in the beginning of June for example, roundtrip fares from Chicago O'Hare International Airport can be found for under $145 on Spirit Airlines, and for $45 more -- around $189 -- American Airlines has similar flights that include a carry on item for no fee.

Where to stay

Look at hotel membership programs before you book your stay.

An IHG One Rewards account gets guests a slightly cheaper rate: A room at the Hotel Indigo, for instance, is priced at $129 per night for members, $7 less than the typical rate.

Travel expert Clint Henderson, managing editor at The Points Guy, told "GMA" that "among the perks you can potentially get just for being a member in a loyalty program are free Wi-Fi, late checkout and even room upgrades."

"In the case of IHG, specifically, you unlock member discounts by booking via their website as opposed to an online travel agent," he said.

Eat like a local

There's no shortage of delicious New Orleans restaurant options from legendary chefs like Emeril Lagasse or Nina Compton, but if you're looking to save, check out specials and find some go-to spots that locals love.

At the famed, family-run Parkway Bakery, one of the oldest po' boy shops in the city and known for its fresh baked bread, visitors can enjoy an array of stuffed oversized sub-like sandwiches for as little as $7. And if you can agree on the fillings and toppings, sharing a full size po' boy like the classic flash-fried Louisiana wild-caught Gulf shrimp comes in at just $7.70 each for two people.

Plus, May through July is peak crawfish season, and local eateries like Clesi's Seafood Restaurant & Catering have an abundance of the freshwater crustacean for just $8.50 per pound. The restaurant offers weekly specials as well like $3 taco Tuesday and free fry basket Friday, and gives customers a complimentary order of french fries tossed in a house-made parmesan garlic butter with the purchase of a pitcher of beer.

It wouldn't be a visit to New Orleans without satisfying your sweet tooth with beignets. The renowned Cafe du Monde serves up the deep-fried pâte à choux pastry, which is doused in powdered sugar, in orders of three for just $3.85 -- but don't forget, it's cash only.

Getting around the city

Skip the cabs or rideshare apps and pick up a Jazzy Pass to use public transit for just $3 a day.

The card includes unlimited rides on the ferry, bus and street cars, providing a unique view of the city.

A First-Time Visitor’s Guide to New Orleans

a musician plays in the french quarter of new orleans

Updated May 2023

New Orleans is a city famed for its iconic buildings, soul-filled jazz music, and delicious Creole and Cajun food. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, a music lover or anything in between, the Big Easy has something for you to enjoy. While there are tons of unique experiences in New Orleans, in can be helpful to narrow down your list to where to start if it’s your first time in New Orleans. Here’s what to do in New Orleans if you’re looking to make the most of your first visit.

Best Time of Year to Visit New Orleans

Winter and spring are the best times to visit New Orleans because you don’t have to deal with the scorching temperatures and high humidity of the summer, or the hurricane threats in the fall. Popular times to visit New Orleans tend include Mardi Gras (which falls in February or March each year) and Jazz Fest (most years at the end of April/beginning of May). If you want to avoid premium hotel rates and huge crowds, you may want to avoid traveling the New Orleans during its festival season.

Where to Stay in New Orleans

There are several areas with distinctive vibes suitable for visitors to stay during their trip.

French Quarter

a building in New Orleans' French Quarter with plants overhanging the balconies

The French Quarter is the oldest neighborhood in the Big Easy. Stay here if you want to be in the center of the majority of the main attractions, be surrounded by historic buildings, and have quick access to top-notch restaurants and bars. HI New Orleans hostel is just minutes away from the area’s must-see sites.

Garden District & Uptown

While you can find good food in every neighborhood in New Orleans, the Garden District and Uptown are neighborhoods are especially good for local-approved dining options. Stay in the Garden District if you like to wander around aimlessly. Its iconic Greek revival mansions and slew of live oak trees make for a perfect romantic stroll.

a woman kneels down to take a photo of a colorful statue in New Orleans' Louis Armstrong Park

Tremé is America’s oldest historically Black neighborhood. Here you will find multi-cultural museums and authentic New Orleans music and food. While you’re in the neighborhood, don’t miss visiting Louis Armstrong Park, dedicated to the legendary NOLA-born jazz musician, and the Backstreet Cultural Museum, where you can learn about the history (and ongoing traditions) of the city’s Mardi Gras Indians.

Central Business District

Stay in the Central Business District (CBD) if you’re looking for a family-friendly area in New Orleans. The CBD has lots of accommodation options with rooms and amenities catering to the needs of families. Although there are no major attractions in this area, it is a good hub for traveling throughout the city because all four of the city’s streetcar lines stop here.

Places to eat in New Orleans

Mission one while visiting New Orleans: Eat all the food! There is so much delicious, unique food to try while in NOLA, but start with gumbo, po’ boys, jambalaya, crawfish, and red beans and rice. For dessert, beignets and snoballs! Here are a few local-approved restaurants where you can check these items off your foodie bucket list:

For crawfish: Cajun Seafood

a new orleans crawfish boil with red crawfish, red potatos, and yellow corn cobs spread out along a long table.

Crawfish are an integral ingredient in Cajun dishes. This traditional New Orleans seafood is served boiled, sautéed, baked, or fried. Try it at one of the several locations of Cajun Seafood around town.

For Po’ Boys: Parkway Bakery & Tavern

a close up of a new orleans po boy sandwich

The Po’ Boy is the recognized New Orleans sandwich. Po’ Boys are served on toasted New Orleans-style French bread, dressed with lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise, and filled with anything from fresh gulf seafood, to smoked pork, to meatballs. You can’t go wrong ordering from Parkway Bakery & Tavern in New Orleans’ fun Mid-City neighborhood .

For Jambalaya and red beans and rice: Mother’s Restaurant

a close-up of a cast iron pan containing a colorful New Orleans gumbo with shrimp and sausage

Jambalaya is a rice and pork, or rice and seafood, dish cooked together with fragrant ingredients like onion, celery, pepper, herbs, and spices. Try both the Cajun and Creole versions while in NOLA. The main difference between the two is that Cajun versions of jambalaya are not cooked with tomato, and the Creole versions of jambalaya are.

Red beans and rice is a slow-cooked dish mixing pork, kidney beans, rice, and spices, and pays homage to the legacy of the African and Caribbean arrivals to the city.

For Gumbo: Gabrielle

Gumbo is a boiled or stewed dish containing a roux, a common French flour-and-fat mix, and filled with chicken and other fowl, sausage, seafood, and seasoned with salt and spices.

For New Orleans snoballs: Hansen’s Sno-Bliz Shop

New Orleans Snoballs differ from traditional snowcones because they’re made with fine and fluffy shaved ice, asopposed to coarse and crunchy ice. Snoballs are customizable and flavored with a variety of sweet syrups and toppings.

For Beignets: Café Du Monde

an overhead view of a small round table at cafe du monde in new orleans. In the center of the table is a plate full of fresh beignets. On either side is a cup of coffee.

Beignets are powdered, fried donuts. While a beignet’s exterior is golden brown, its inside is light and airy.

Must-do things in New Orleans

Here are a few must-do activities in New Orleans for a well-rounded first visit.

Go live-music show hopping on Frenchmen Street

a group of mean play instruments on a street corner in front of a yellow building

New Orleans is the birthplace of Jazz, and Frenchmen Street in the Marigny neighborhood is the heart of the nightlife and live music scene in the city. Be sure to spend time wandering Frenchmen Street being called into bars by the hypnotizing sounds of the bands.

Ride the St. Charles Street Car

a green streetcar in new orleans goes through a natural tunnel of green trees

The historic St. Charles Street car line opened in 1835 and is the oldest continuously running street railway system in the world. For $1.25, buy a one-way ticket and take a 45-minute ride from the French Quarter to the Garden District (and beyond). This is a great way to take in beauty of some of New Orleans’ most interesting homes and other iconic sites while relaxing your week. The St. Charles line is one of five streetcar routes. Buy an all-day unlimited pass for $3 if you plan on hopping on and off throughout the day.

Learn about the experiences of enslaved people at the Whitney Plantation

There’s an abundance of plantations surrounding New Orleans, however the Whitney Plantation is the only one dedicated to sharing the stories of the enslaved people. This powerful, interactive exhibit is not to be missed. It’s about an hour’s drive west from New Orleans, and well worth the trip.

Marvel at the beauty of St. Louis Cathedral and Jackson Square

a tall, beautiful cathedral against a blue sky in New Orleans' Jackson Square

The St. Louis Cathedral and Jackson Square is postcard NOLA. This beautiful backdrop is made even more magical by the jazz musicians and artists that line the area.

Join in on a Second Line Parade

a large group of people in wedding attire parade through the streets with musicians

A second line is a foot parade led by a brass band. They tend to be organized for funerals, weddings, festivals, or protests. It’s  beautiful to see the community dancing and singing to celebrate a joyous occasion or shake off stress. Second lines are held by different social organizations weekly on Sundays for the majority of the year. Visitor-friendly second lines are publicized through local jazz and heritage radio station WWOZ’s program In the Streets . Keep in mind, if you do decide to join in on a second line it’s proper etiquette to join in on the back of the line.

Take a Swamp Tour

an alligator sits in a swamp surrounded by tall grasses

Swamp Tours are a fun, immersive way to learn about the history of the New Orleans’ swamps and bayous. You’ll also spot alligators and other wildlife during this tour. Swamp Tours are typically held on air boats or pontoon boats and take place at Honey Island Swamp or the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, which are both about a 30-45 minute drive from the French Quarter. Pro-tip: Buy your tour on Groupon for a discount!

You’re guaranteed to have a good time in New Orleans and undoubtedly will want to come back!

Saints are favored in just one of their first five games in 2024

https://twitter.com/garlandgillen/status/1791101813292507177

There's a lot riding on the first month of the New Orleans Saints' 2024 season. Fast starts are always important, but it's especially vital that Dennis Allen and Derek Carr prove their doubters wrong in September. With the NFL schedule releasing this week , the Saints found themselves favored by sportsbooks in just one of their first five games.

It isn't going to be easy. After kicking off the season against the Carolina Panthers in New Orleans (where the Saints are favored by 4.5 points) they'll go on the road for three of their next four games. And all but one of those matchups pits them against playoff teams returning from last year's postseason.

First up: a road game in Week 2 with the Dallas Cowboys, which has developed into a strong geographical rivalry between two neighboring fanbases. The Cowboys opened as 6-point favorites. Remember, Dallas lost in January to the same Green Bay Packers team that mounted a 17-point comeback win over the Saints early last season.

After that, the Saints will return home for a game with the Philadelphia Eagles, who were upset by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild-card round. This is looking like one of the tighter games in the early stretch, with the Eagles being favored by just 3 points when books opened on Wednesday.

The Saints will get a brief respite when they travel to see the Atlanta Falcons, whose offseason momentum has buoyed them to being 4.5-point favorites over New Orleans. While it's true Atlanta signed Kirk Cousins to take over at quarterback this offseason, they haven't introduced many changes to a defense that gave up a combined 85 points to the Chicago Bears and Saints in the last two weeks.

But then things come to a head. The Saints will stay on the road for a prime time matchup with the reigning Super Bowl champions. The Kansas City Chiefs, favored by a daunting 8 points, are looking to win an unprecedented three Super Bowl championships in a row. With the odds stacked against them so badly, Allen must have his team prepared to play ball. Starting the season at 1-4, as these odds imply, would doom them.

LOOK: The New Orleans Saints 2024 schedule is officially here

Taylor swift's the eras tour stop won't conflict with saints' 2024 schedule, saints only receive three prime time games in 2024, saints will play the packers on monday night football in december.
