Star trek: discovery’s red angel explained.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 referenced the Red Angel, a crucial element of season 2 that took the form of two members of Michael Burnham's family.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 2, Episode 5 - "Face The Strange"

  • The Red Angel from Star Trek: Discovery season 2 was referenced in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4.
  • There were two Red Angels in Star Trek: Discovery season 2: Dr. Gabrielle Burnham and her daughter, Commander Michael Burnham.
  • As the Red Angel, Michael led the USS Discovery to the 32nd century and then destroyed the Red Angel time suit.

The Red Angel returned in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4, "Face the Strange," after being an integral aspect of season 2 that literally brought the USS Discovery to the 32nd century. Discovery season 2 begins with Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) taking over command of the USS Discovery to investigate a series of mysterious signals that have appeared across the galaxy connected to a being called the Red Angel. Starfleet has been unable to determine the origin of the Red Angel or even what kind of lifeform it may be, but Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her foster brother, Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck), eventually uncover the truth.

The Red Angel briefly reappears in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4 , "Face the Strange," written by Sean Cochran and directed by Lee Rose. When Captain Burnham and Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) get trapped in a time loop, they jump to different points in Discovery 's past, present, and future, including experiencing the starship's journey to the 32nd century. From the bridge of the Discovery, surrounded by the unconscious crew members, Burnham and Rayner watch the Red Angel through the viewscreen, as she leads Discovery to the future.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Star trek: discovery season 2’s original red angel was michael’s mother, dr. gabrielle burnham, michael's parents developed the original red angel suit with section 31..

In Star Trek: Discovery season 2 , the USS Discovery tracks the Red Angel to the wreckage of the USS Hiawatha. As they rescue the survivors, Michael Burnham gets her first glimpse of the Red Angel. Burnham also finds a log entry left by Spock that describes nightmares he has had since childhood of seven red burst-like signals and a red angel. In Discovery season 2, episode 8, "If Memory Serves," Spock reveals that he mind-melded with the Red Angel and learned that she is a time traveler trying to prevent the destruction of the galaxy. The full truth of the mysterious entity is finally revealed in the aptly titled Star Trek: Discovery season 2, episode 10, "The Red Angel."

As the Red Angel, Gabrielle then made it her mission to prevent this future, but she kept failing.

With Michael Burnham acting as bait, the Red Angel arrives and is revealed to be Michael's mother, Dr. Gabrielle Burnham (Sonja Sohn). The Red Angel time suit Gabrielle wears was built by Starfleet's covert agency, Section 31, as part of the Daedalus Project, a time travel research program created during a temporal arms race with the Klingons. Michael's parents developed the Red Angel suit but were believed to be killed when the Klingons attacked their research outpost. In reality, Gabrielle had traveled 950 years into the future and discovered that the artificially intelligent Control had wiped out all life. As the Red Angel, Gabrielle then made it her mission to prevent this future, but she kept failing.

Michael Burnham Became Star Trek: Discovery Season 2’s Second Red Angel

Burnham wore the new red angel suit to lead the uss discovery into the 32nd century..

When Gabrielle Burnham was captured in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, episode 10, "The Red Angel," she provided Michael with information, including her personal logs. Unfortunately, Control destroyed the Red Angel suit. As the conflict between Discovery and Control continued to escalate, Discovery's crew came up with a plan to create a new Red Angel suit that could be used to send Discovery into the far future. After a run-in with an ancient sphere, Discovery gained access to a massive amount of data about the galaxy's history. If Control obtained that data, it would then be powerful enough to destroy all sentient life in the galaxy.

To prevent Control from accessing the sphere data, the USS Discovery planned to follow the new Red Angel into the future where Control would be unable to reach them. Michael Burnham became the second Red Angel , donning the new suit to travel back in time and set up the initial signals that would put Discovery on the right path and close the time loop. Michael created a sixth burst to lead Discovery through the wormhole into the future, and a seventh burst to let Spock and the USS Enterprise know that she had been successful. Michael arrived in the 32nd century in 3188, about one year before the USS Discovery would emerge from the wormhole and crash-land on an icy planet in 3189.

In Star Trek : Discovery season 5's "Face the Strange," Burnham and Rayner observe Discovery's journey from the ship's bridge, as Rayner observes: " We’ve gone back in time to when you went forward to the future? That’s a little confusing."

Michael Burnham's 10 Best Star Trek Discovery Episodes

What happened to star trek: discovery’s red angel, burnham ensured discovery's journey was a one-way trip..

Upon emerging from the wormhole in the 32nd century in Star Trek: Discovery season 3's premiere, Burnham collides with the ship of Cleveland Booker (David Ajala), and she and the ship both crash-land on a nearby planet. When Burnham is unable to contact the USS Discovery, she uses the Red Angel suit to check for life signs to confirm that Discovery successfully prevented Control from destroying all life in the galaxy. Elated that their mission was successful, Burnham then sends the Red Angel suit back through the closing wormhole to relay the seventh and final signal. Michael then programs the suit to self-destruct to prevent anyone from following Discovery to the future.

The Red Angel also established the bond between Michael Burnham and her mother, Gabrielle, despite their tumultuous relationship.

The Red Angel was a pivotal component of Star Trek: Discovery season 2 that bridged the series from its 23rd-century origin point to the 32nd century. The Red Angel also established the bond between Michael Burnham and her mother, Gabrielle, despite their tumultuous relationship, as only Michael could accomplish the mission her mother was unable to complete . Star Trek: Discovery season 5 was savvy in nodding to Michael Burnham's history as the Red Angel, since Discovery would not be in the far future without her. But the winged Red Angel time suit had to be destroyed to protect the 23rd century, ensuring Discovery's journey to the 32nd century was one-way and permanent.

“The Red Angel,” Star Trek: Discovery ’s 10th episode of its second season, moved so fast that I didn’t even have time to stop and think about whether a certain turn of events made sense. It turns out that was on purpose, as the end reveal of the Red Angel's identity made clear.

This episode started out with Airiam’s funeral, and I was very happy about that. The Star Trek franchise often kills off secondary characters without a backward glance. As “The Red Angel” made clear, though, these losses have a real impact on the crew, and they have to work through their grief. This show does an excellent job generally of showing that anger, pain, grief: These emotions are processes, not one-offs. You don’t heal right away, and even if you can straighten your shirt, lift your chin, and clear your brain to tackle the problem at hand, that doesn’t mean you’re okay.

It turns out that Project Daedalus, which Airiam told Michael to look for, was in fact a Section 31 project that explored time travel and resulted in the Red Angel suit. But that suit was destroyed by the Klingons, or so Section 31 thought until the Red Angel started appearing. And — twist of all twists — it turns out that the Red Angel is actually Michael Burnham herself, according to a biometric scan.

So, of course, our intrepid Discovery crew members work on a plan to capture the Red Angel while also grappling with their personal lives, trying to come to terms with everything that’s happened so far.

Discovery ’s writers really excel at balancing the fast-paced episode plots with character moments in this second season. Despite the fact that so much happened this episode that I probably can’t even recap it all in one post (at least not one with a decent word count), we got so many lovely character-driven scenes.

It’s no surprise that Dr. Culber would seek out a therapist (but the fact that Admiral Cornwell is the closest thing that Discovery has to one is a gaping oversight because THIS SHIP REALLY REALLY NEEDS AN OFFICIAL THERAPIST). Though his time with the admiral was brief, she really had some great advice. I think the fact that she understood his issues right off the bat, referring to his former self in the past tense, made Culber more receptive to what she had to say. When she told him, “Love is a choice,” I had chills. You could really feel Culber's anguish. That scene was so short, so quiet, and yet so poignant.

hugh-stamets

Michael really went on a journey in “The Red Angel” too, as Spock outlines for her in another great scene. After discovering that her parents were actually working on the Red Angel suit for Section 31, and that Leland was directly responsible for her parents’ death, Michael had to take her anger out on something that wasn’t Leland’s face (though I wish it had been more of Leland’s face, to be honest). We’ve seen Michael be a sister to Spock; this was the first time we truly saw him be a brother to her. Perhaps, Spock, it’s time for the sadbeard to go.

Ash is finally out of Discovery jail, as the crew now knows it was Airiam betraying them to Section 31, and so he and his hair are free to move about the ship once again. Of course, he goes straight to Michael. I do like them as a couple, especially at the end, where Michael confides in Ash that she’s scared. This is exactly what he didn’t trust her with in Season 1, and it drove them apart. Perhaps this is a second chance for them.

ash-burnham

Spock has discovered that the Red Angel shows up whenever Michael is in danger, so the solution is clearly to kill Michael in order to allow the Red Angel to appear. I knew that she couldn’t die because Michael is the center of the show, and yet that scene with her in the chair was so tense, I think I had a heart attack. But finally the Red Angel did show up, and off came the mask.

Airiam said in the last episode that this was all about Michael, and it turns out that’s true — the Red Angel is her mother. (I had a paragraph all prepared about why I don’t engage in discussion about time paradoxes and such, and I didn’t even need to use it. The bottom line is that I trust the writers, and so if they take us on a journey, I’ll suspend disbelief and follow them.) So the question is, how did this happen? The easiest hypothesis is that she didn’t die in the Klingon attack, and yet Michael has memories of her brutal and graphic treatment. Is she from an alternate future where the outcome was different? Or did she survive somehow? There are a lot of questions here, but what a cliffhanger to leave us on.

georgiou-burnham

Again, there’s so much I didn’t get to in this recap — that Stamets/Georgiou interaction, the idea that time travel is responsible for leaps in human development (I couldn’t help but think of the movie First Contact ), what happened to Leland at the end of the episode, Burnham finally acknowledging that Emperor Georgiou cares for her — but I’ll leave it here.

Recap / Star Trek: Discovery S2E10 "The Red Angel"

Edit locked, tropes in this episode:.

  • And This Is for... : Burnham gives Leland two palm strikes to the face, one for each of her parents, when she learns that he was responsible for their deaths.
  • Bait-and-Switch : Because the Angel's neural patterns closely match Burnham's, and the Red Angel has appeared at points where Burnham's life was in danger, they believe that Burnham in the future must have somehow obtained the suit and is now using it. To capture the Red Angel, they deliberately put Burnham's life in danger so future Burnham will be forced to prevent a Grandfather Paradox . As it turns out, the Red Angel isn't Burnham, but her mother, so the reason she acted as such was to protect her daughter.
  • Big Damn Kiss : A (mostly) non-romantic example, when Tyler and Burnham share a kiss aboard Discovery .

star trek red angel suit

  • Continuity Nod : When explaining their connection to Section 31, Leland explains that Burnham's parents had a theory that certain jumps in technology throughout history, including Earth, were the result of time travelers. For example, Henry Starling jumpstarting the development of microchips through his study of the timeship Aeon back in the 60s, or Scotty providing Dr. Nichols with the formula for transparent aluminum in 1986.
  • Connected All Along : The mysterious Red Angel is not future Burnham... but her mother.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death : Burnham is strapped into a chair and exposed to an atmosphere that consists of carbon monoxide and perchlorate dust, making her suffocation both agonizingly slow and excruciatingly painful.
  • Death World : The atmosphere of Essof IV is deadly to even be in, let alone breathe.
  • Deliberate Injury Gambit : To attract the Red Angel, believing her to be Burnham from the future, the crew deliberately places Burnham in a situation where she'll die without the Angel's intervention.
  • Depraved Bisexual : Georgiou claims that the mirror universe version of both Paul Stamets and Hugh Culber were pansexual rather than homosexual.
  • Dude, She's A Lesbian : Georgiou’s hits on Stamets and Culber give both of them the chance to say, “you know he’s gay, right?”
  • Due to the Dead : The episode begins with the funeral for Airiam, with every person aboard Discovery in attendance. As in The Wrath of Khan , Airiam's body is placed in a torpedo casing and shot away from the ship towards a nearby planet .
  • Entertainingly Wrong : The crew have evidence seeming to prove that a future version of Burnham is the Red Angel. Instead, the being is revealed to be Burnham's mother.
  • Extreme Omnisexual : According to Georgiou, who herself fits the trope, she had flings with both Mirror!Stamets and Mirror!Culber, who were pansexual. Stamets then counters that even if that were true, the Prime universe's versions of them are firmly on the "gay" side of the spectrum. Culber in particular is shocked to hear Georgiou call him "papi."
  • Eye Scream : The future AI causes Leland's retinal scanner to jab a needle into his eye when it infiltrates his ship. It's possible that this is meant to be a countermeasure for unauthorized access.
  • Forgiveness : Spock finally accepts Burnham's apology for the things that she said to him as a child. Burnham: What you said about... me always finding a way to blame myself... You are right. I brought my guilt into your home. I’m sorry. Spock: You were a child... with a child’s understanding of an event that even adults would struggle to comprehend. However, if it will ease your suffering, I accept your apology.
  • Free-Love Future : Georgiou implies that the Mirror Universe is like this, claiming to have had casual sex with its versions of Stamets and Culber.
  • Giving Radio to the Romans : Leland mentions that Burnham's parents were working on the theory that sudden technological and scientific advances in history that seemed to come out of nowhere were due to time travelers. Burnham disputes the idea, but (in-universe) they're right: the Voyager episode " Future's End " shows that the information age was kickstarted thanks to the crash-landing of a 29th-century timeship in The '70s .
  • Grandfather Paradox : Referenced by name when Burnham points out that the way to lure her future self to where she can be captured is to place present Burnham in mortal danger, so the Red Angel will have to intervene to save her past self.
  • Hesitant Sacrifice : Despite acknowledging the necessity of her own death in order to summon the Red Angel, Burnham confesses to Tyler that she's terrified.
  • Hostage Situation : When Pike orders the attempt to lure the Red Angel stopped, Spock pulls his phaser and holds Culber, Stamets, and Georgiou hostage to prevent them from rescuing Burnham.
  • Internal Reveal : Leland tells Burnham about his involvement in the death of her parents.
  • Irony : As lampshaded by Georgiou. Georgiou: So we're going to the Ninth Circle of Hell to capture a Red Angel.
  • It Only Works Once : The Discovery crew has only one chance to capture the Red Angel, because failure would kill Burnham.
  • My Greatest Failure : Leland admits that the death of Burnham's parents was due to his ambition as a young operative making him sloppy and careless.
  • Mythology Gag : Airiam's funeral is an homage to The Wrath of Khan , right down to having a speech (or several) in her memory, followed by music (singing instead of bagpipes), and launching the casket from the ship towards a nearby planet.
  • No New Fashions in the Future : Off-duty Culber wears a very contemporary-looking blazer. The contrast between him and everyone else's Future Spandex is almost funny.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome : After the events of "Project Daedalus", Discovery blew up Section 31's Space Station headquarters to destroy Control's primary terminal. Afterwards, they must have also managed to escape the surrounding minefield, if it was not disabled by the loss of the nearby station.
  • Oh, Crap! : When the ship's computer repeats his own words back to him, Leland realizes that the AI is in his ship just before he gets a needle in the eye.
  • Our Wormholes Are Different : The red wormhole used by the Red Angel to travel through time is temporary, kept open by the time crystal in the suit. Just before closing, it snaps the Angel back into it like a rubber band. The future AI uses the open wormhole to send agents into the past. Apparently, an opening wormhole sends out a pressure wave that temporarily knocks out ship systems, as the crews of the Discovery and the NCIA-93 find out.
  • Parting-Words Regret : Defied when Burnham goes to see Tyler after giving him "The Reason You Suck" Speech , telling him that she doesn't want that to be the last thing that she says to him. He accepts that she was angry about how Section 31 indirectly caused the Klingon attack on Doctari Alpha.
  • Pet the Dog : Georgiou displays honest concern over Burnham's well-being and safety, and for once openly shows that she truly cares about her rather than trying to deny it.
  • Race Against the Clock : Discovery and Section 31 have two minutes to capture the Red Angel and revive Burnham before her death becomes irreversible. They don't make it, but the Red Angel revives Burnham using her suit's technology.
  • Subverted— Pike and Cornwell are convinced the Project Daedalus file is a fake set up by Control as a diversion, until Culber points out that if it were a fake, the brain scans contained within it would be flawless and would not have the small imperfections that real people have.
  • Also, the neural patterns are believed to be a complete match for Michael Burnham, when they actually come from her mother (or were a fake intended to misdirect the Discovery crew).
  • The rogue futuristic AI still exists, hiding inside the main computer of Leland's ship.
  • The Red Angel is Burnham's mother.
  • The Red Angel suit is a creation of Section 31's Project Daedalus, meant to protect the Federation from Klingon attempts to weaponize time travel.
  • Burnham's parents secretly worked for Section 31, and her mother developed the Red Angel suit to use in a potential temporal conflict against the Klingons. They were killed when Leland unintentionally allowed a Klingon agent to trace the time crystal that Section 31 stole from the Klingons to them, though Burnham's mother evidently escaped using the suit (or really did die in the attack and has yet to return to that time period).
  • Script-Reading Doors : Lampshaded when Tilly apologizes for barging into a meeting, saying that she should have knocked, but couldn't because the doors open automatically.
  • Spotting the Thread : Spock realizes that the times and places that the Red Angel has shown up without being connected to one of the signals is when Burnham herself has been in danger.
  • Survivor's Guilt : Spock finally states the obvious; Burnham's willingness to keep sacrificing herself physically and emotionally for others is due to her guilt at feeling responsible for the death of her parents.
  • That's an Order! : Pike orders Spock to let the team rescue Burnham. He refuses.
  • Try Not to Die : Spock says to Burnham, "Were you to perish, I would be charged with killing a Starfleet officer again. It would therefore be ideal if you survived."
  • Understatement : Spock's description of the toxic atmosphere on Essof IV makes it clear that "inhospitable" is an insufficient descriptor. Spock: To call Essof IV "inhospitable" would be a gross understatement. Temperatures fluctuate wildly, and its carbon monoxide atmosphere is laced with perchlorate dust, which will quickly prove lethal to any oxygen-breathing life-form.
  • Unspoken Plan Guarantee : The plan to capture the Red Angel is thoroughly discussed. Oddly enough, it goes more-or-less as planned.
  • Wham Line : When Burnham comes face-to-face with the Red Angel and sees whom they've captured. Burnham: ... Mom?
  • What Happened to the Mouse? : Admiral Cornwell, who supervised the operation to overthrow Section 31, disappears again, not appearing again until the 2-part finale. (This is slightly more justified than Jett Reno's on-and-off presence, as Cornwell was explicitly shown arriving via her own Faster-Than-Light Travel -capable shuttle— not to mention that Discovery accomplished the objective that she had set for it.)
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are : Nhan and Burnham come to respect each other by this— Burnham by telling Nhan that she did the right thing by opening the airlock, and Nhan saying that she was glad that Burnham was still trying to find other solutions.

RECAP: 'Discovery''s Crew Puts the Red Angel to the Test

Last week's episode gave viewers more questions than answers.

Cover

StarTrek.com

“Perpetual Infinity,” the 11th episode of Star Trek: Discovery 's second season, will stream this evening. Before you watch, catch up on Discovery ’s most-recent events with this collection of highlights from "The Red Angel.”

Of All The Souls…

Anson Mount as Captain Pike; Jayne Brook as Admiral Cornwell; Ethan Peck as Spock

Michael Gibson/CBS ©2018 CBS Interactive, Inc

The crew bids farewell to Airiam during a touching funeral ceremony that includes Saru singing a song that’s heartbreaking even if neither the characters nor the audience understands a word of Kelpien. Longtime fans, may have caught a fun Easter egg in this funeral scene: it's quite similar to Spock’s elegiac service in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan .

Michael, It’s You

Red Angel Recap

Cornwell meets with Spock, Pike, Burnham and Saru, and wonders aloud how a Section 31 program designed to eliminate threats has become a threat itself. The answer is time travel, which Spock explains is, “The one variable we cannot possibly predict in the future.” Cornwell wants the AI destroyed. Tilly joins the group to reveal that a digital parasite implanted a file — “Project Daedalus” — in Airiam, and adds, “The file also contains a bio-neural signature of the Red Angel. Michael, it’s you.”

Build a Better Mousetrap

Red Angel Recap

Burnham struggles to absorb Tilly’s news. If she is the Red Angel and knew about an impending apocalypse, why not just say so? Perhaps the seven signals are a warning. Maybe Burnham is guiding Starfleet to specific points on some sort of path. But why? Cut to Leland, who arrives aboard the Discovery with Georgiou. They share that 20 years ago, during a temporal arms race with the Klingons, Section 31 created the Red Angel, which now must be captured. “Let’s go build a mousetrap,” Cornwell says.

Remember These Moments

Red Angel Recap

Short but key interactions play out, notably including Leland coming clean to Burnham. Her parents worked for him on Project Daedalus, and their deaths are his fault. Burnham brutally assaults Leland, but then realizes something much worse. Tyler knew all along. And finally, at long last Burnham and Spock make their peace. He accepts her apology, and she breathes a sigh of relief. Spock then tells his sister that she’s the variance, the thing that causes the Red Angel to appear in some instances and not in others.

Laying the Bait

Red Angel Recap

Discovery need not chase the Red Angel. Rather, they can bait it with Burnham. The idea goes against Pike’s oath as captain, but he reluctantly accepts Spock and Burnham’s argument that the Red Angel won’t let her die. Burnham apologizes to Tyler and they kiss. Spock offers encouragement. “It would… be ideal if you survived,” he says, prompting Burnham to reply, “Such a way with words, Spock.”

Red Angel Recap

Life support shuts down and a screaming Burnham nears death. Spock, phaser in hand, thwarts Dr. Culber and Georgiou from helping her. Pike orders him to stand down, but he refuses and Burnham expires. The Red Angel arrives and revives her, and begins to emerge from its suit. In an all-time Trek twist, Burnham and the audience slowly discover the unthinkable. The Red Angel is Burnham’s mother.

Global Preview: “Perpetual Infinity”

In “Perpetual Infinity,” Burnham receives the reunion she’s been longing for, but it doesn’t go quite as she imagined. Georgiou and Tyler sense a disturbing change in Leland.

Participating in this event grants daily progress towards the Grand Prize: The Red Angel Suit. Obtaining the Red Angel suit requires 40 daily progress, and Captains can earn two daily progress per day by playing any of the following content:

  • Two Brand New Episodes (2 Points Each)
  • New Task Force Operation: Best Served Cold (2 Points)
  • Clash Above Ceron
  • Strike at Seedea
  • Trouble over Terrh

Once the player has obtained 40 daily progress on their account, they can claim the Red Angel Suit. After that, the event will still be playable, granting a scaling dilithium reward that begins at 8,000 dilithium ore and scales by 1,000 dilithium ore for every day you participate in the event.

Captains will also have the option to purchase their remaining progress in the event with Zen. The price for this buyout will prorate, based on the amount of progress a Captain has completed.

The Red Angel Suit

In Star Trek: Discovery, the Red Angel Suit was a powerful device capable of traveling through time by thousands of years. Now, Khitomer Alliance scientists, with the help of the Excalbian construct Michael Burnham, have managed to recreate some of the functionality of the original suit to outfit their officers. The Time Crystals necessary to travel far through time weren’t possible to recreate, but the suit itself was. Powerful and versatile, it functions as standard combat armor until its special properties are needed. These properties, referred to as Red Angel Mode, can only be used for a short while before the systems must recharge.

Passive: Revive

If the wearer would ever be defeated while in Red Angel Suit is equipped, the Red Angel visits them from the future of their timeline, reviving them and releasing a shockwave blast, knocking nearby enemies down and damaging them. This effect has a separate internal recharge time.

Active: Red Angel Mode

The power of the suit goes beyond saving yourself from certain death, however. By activating Red Angel Mode, you will be able to engage the suit's full power, trading your action bar for the abilities granted by the suit itself and transforming into the Red Angel.

When the wearer engages the suit, a number of things happen at once. First, a blast of energy knocks back, disables, and damages nearby enemies. Second, their appearance temporarily becomes that of the Red Angel. Third, they trade their normal weapon active abilities for a new set of abilities. Fourth, they receive large bonuses to speed, damage, and damage resistance.

The Red Angel can activate Temporal Shockwave against a Target Foe. This deals heavy damage to the Target and nearby Foes, and shunts them forward in time several seconds, removing them from the battlefield entirely until they arrive in the future.

The suit can also discharge its internal power supply for an area of effect EMP. Though smaller than the one seen on Kaminar, this EMP still disables all mechanical abilities of nearby Foes as well as dealing heavy Electrical damage to mechanical and incorporeal entities.

Large Hyposprays and Shield Recharge devices are integrated with the suit, and may be used without consuming a device. This has a modest recharge.

This is a special event for our next content drop, and is not part of Event Campaign II. You'll be able to try out all of this new content in a little less than a week on PC, and after the Risian Lolhunat Festival on Console. We hope you enjoy this special event, Captains, and we'll see you in game.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 Episode 10 Review: The Red Angel

The best Star Trek: Discovery twist yet is one we could have never guessed.

This Star Trek: Discovery review contains spoilers.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 Episode 10

Putting a mysterious traveler in an opaque space suit and making us guess who is inside is a classic science fiction trick. Before  Discovery  gave us the mysterious “Red Angel,”  Doctor Who   punked everyone in 2011 with “The Impossible Astronaut.” Before that, in 1996,  Babylon 5   had a mysterious space-suited time traveler called “The One.” And, let’s not forget that Marty McFly pretty much invented being a Red Angel when he donned a radiation suit and impersonated “Darth Vader From the Planet Vulcan” in the original  Back to the Future  in 1985!

In fact, if we’d wanted to know the identity of  Discover y’s  Red Angel , we probably should have been thinking about  Back to the Future  and not Star Trek lore. Because now that we know who the Red Angel is,  Star Trek: Discovery   has turned a confusing time travel story into an emotional one about a family. Which is totally brilliant.

The big news in “The Red Angel,” is the episode lies to the viewer for nearly the entire thing. Right before the opening credits, Tilly reveals that some data buried deep in Airiam’s cyberbrain proves that the bioneural signature of the Red Angel is the same as Michael Burnham. Then the episode proceeds at warp speed to figure out a way to get Burnham to meet “herself” and demand some answers for all this time travel stuff. Along the way, we learn that Burnham’s real parents weren’t innocently killed by Klingons as we were previously led to believe, but instead, were Section 31 agents, working for Leland twenty years prior, presumably when he had a full head of hair. Right here, we get our first clue that the Red Angel probably isn’t Michael at all, but instead, likely someone who developed the time travel tech to begin with: Her parents!

Ad – content continues below

Rewatching the episode, you’ll actually be shocked by how well the twist is foreshadowed. Leland reveals Burnham’s mom invented the time travel tech, and the bioneural mumbo-jumbo scanning as Burnham also points perfectly to the Angel being one of her parents. So, in the final scene of the episode, when Burnham shockingly gasps “mom!” the viewer is gasping right along with her. (Burnham’s mom is played by actress Sonja Sohn, famous for  The Wire ,  by the way.)

Because this episode was so tightly written, this twist feels authentic and thoroughly earned.  Discovery  has been planting very small hints that everything about Burnham’s parents weren’t exactly what we believed, and just like a latter-era Lemony Snicket book, we suddenly have a lot more information about them then we’d ever had before. (There are actually a ton of parallels between  Star Trek: Discovery  and  A Series of Unfortunate Events , but I’ll spare you, dear reader.)

The point is, that with this twist, the show has made the time travel stuff  mean something beyond just being a confusing sci-fi plot device. This fact, is arguably why  Back to the Future  is considered to be the best time travel story ever: It’s actually not really about time travel. That first film is about seeing your family through a new lens, thanks to time travel. Obviously, in 1985 it was hip to make a young teenage kid the time traveler, but in 2019, there’s something tender and intelligent about making this time traveler the mother of the main character of the show.

In its finest moments, Star Trek has always been great at tugging at our heartstrings. In fact, this episode even visually references  Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan ,  perhaps the most emotional moment in Trek history. The funeral of Airiam is supposed to remind us of Spock’s funeral in  The Wrath , but not just because it’s a nerdy callback. Instead,  Discover y   is saying something else about the function of family in Trek. Throughout  Discovery , the notion that Starfleet becomes a surrogate family for people like Saru and Burnham is made clear over and over again. And yet, these characters have all been having to deal with their real family members, too. In   Star Trek V: The Final Frontier , Captain Kirk gesticulates with a coffee spiked with whiskey and says “Other people have families. Not us, Bones.” But, now, in a sense,  Discover y   is proving Kirk wrong. Starfleet can still be Michael Burnham’s family, but that doesn’t mean her mother isn’t still her mother.

Revealing that the Red Angel is Michael Burnham’s mother is not only the most emotionally affecting decision  Discover y’s  writers have ever made, it’s also the most mature twist the show has dropped yet. With “The Red Angel,”  Discovery  is treating its plot twists as moments for the characters to change and grow. This isn’t a gimmick about a character from an alternate dimension, or someone secretly being a Klingon spy. In fact, it’s a twist that’s barely about time travel. The Red Angel story suddenly has emotional weight and meaning. Or, as Marty McFly might say, things just got heavy.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 only has four episodes left, all of which air on CBS-All Access on Thursday nights at 8:30 pm eastern time.

Time crystal on Boreth

Raw time crystals in the Boreth Monastery

A time crystal (or poH qut in Klingonese ) was a rare mineral with a non-equilibrium matter state. Time crystals could be identified by their orthogonal indices. To Klingons , at least those outside of Boreth , time crystals were a myth, a symbol of Kahless , and the namesake of Qo'noS . ( DIS : " Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad ", " Through the Valley of Shadows ")

By the mid- 23rd century , the Vulcan Academy taught its students about time crystals. No Federation -aligned species had been able to stabilize them as the decay rate of the lattice was too unpredictable, and it was thought that any technology based on time crystals must have been perfected by a four-dimensional race . ( DIS : " Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad ") Nonetheless, time crystals were encountered a number of times.

Time crystals were a rare mineral native to the planet Boreth , and the monastery on the planet was not just built to house the Followers of Kahless , but also to protect the mineral. Guarded by the Timekeepers for generations, the crystals generally did not leave the walls of the monastery. The Klingons did at one point exploit the crystals, but stopped because the power to manipulate time was a weapon unlike any other. ( DIS : " Through the Valley of Shadows ") When charged, some crystals have been able to power wormholes through time ( DIS : " The Red Angel ", " Perpetual Infinity ", " Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 ") while at least one provided specifically for the purposes of time travel by the Boreth monks could transport anyone who simply touched it through time without any use of outside technology to harness its power. ( SNW : " A Quality of Mercy ")

Time crystal

Time crystal studied on Doctari Alpha

A modified time crystal was required to enable the Red Angel time travel suit developed by Section 31 in the 2230s . Based on intelligence from an operative on Qo'noS, Leland learned that one had hit the black market near the Orion outpost and acquired it. On Doctari Alpha , the crystal was given to Gabrielle Burnham , who planned to charge it from the nearby supernova of Alpha Lupi . However, the Klingons tracked the crystal to the colony and attacked, forcing Burnham to install the crystal in the suit prematurely. Burnham used a device which attracted the crystal to install it in the back of the suit rather then using her hands. After Burnham was trapped on Essof IV in 2257 , the time crystal in her suit was targeted by Control within Leland 's body, causing an explosion. ( DIS : " The Red Angel ", " Perpetual Infinity ", " Through the Valley of Shadows ")

Harry Mudd's crystal [ ]

Time crystal graphic

Sensor display of Mudd's time crystal

At one point, Harcourt Fenton Mudd acquired a time crystal device capable of creating chronal displacements . This technology consisted of two components: a wrist-mounted crystal with controls in an unknown script , and a much larger one on his ship capable of generating the required energy for chronal displacements.

It was suspected that he used this device to rob a Betazoid bank , and in 2256 , during the Federation-Klingon War , he used it to attempt to steal the USS Discovery and sell it to the Klingons. The device on Mudd's wrist disintegrated after he allowed the Discovery to rejoin the time stream . ( DIS : " Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad ")

Second Red Angel suit crystal [ ]

Following the appearance of the fourth red burst at Boreth in 2257 , Captain Christopher Pike of the USS Discovery went to the planet's monastery . At first, the Timekeeper Tenavik refused to give Pike a time crystal, despite Chancellor L'Rell 's permission. However, Tenavik allowed Pike to take one. As they ventured to where the time crystal were kept, Tenavik told Pike of their power capable of advance aging of plants and Tenavik himself. As Pike attempted to take a crystal, Tenavik warned him that he would see his future and his fate would be sealed. Despite his vision, Pike was able to take one back to Discovery . ( DIS : " Through the Valley of Shadows ")

After touching the crystal, Commander Michael Burnham experienced several flashes of an alternate timeline in which the USS Enterprise was destroyed during the Battle near Xahea due to an unexploded photon torpedo impacting the saucer section and eventually detonating while Control , in the body of Leland , successfully boarded Discovery and slaughtered the bridge crew. Burnham's visions also included Enterprise 's failure to destroy Discovery just moments before it was to happen. This caused Burnham to come to the conclusion that Discovery must be sent to the future via the crystal. During the battle in the current timeline, Enterprise was saved by the sacrifice of Admiral Katrina Cornwell while Control, after only a brief engagement on the bridge, moved on rather than slaughtering the entire bridge crew. Burnham and Spock came to the conclusion that the crystal had showed Burnham this possible future so that she could avoid it. ( DIS : " Such Sweet Sorrow ", " Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 ")

When Discovery failed to auto-destruct, Burnham and the crew decided to use the time crystal to take Discovery and the Sphere data to the future. When a fifth red burst appeared, Discovery took the crystal to Xahea . There, Xahea's queen, Me Hani Ika Hali Ka Po was able to use her Dilithium incubator to power the crystal, although the consequence would be that the crystal would burn out when they were done with it. However, in order to speed up the process, Commander Jett Reno was forced to expose herself to the effects of the crystal, receiving visions of the battle to come, but successfully charging it. The crew was able to rebuild the suit and install the crystal. ( DIS : " Such Sweet Sorrow ", " Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 ")

During the subsequent battle , Burnham was able to use the crystal to create the first five red bursts. After creating the sixth red burst, Burnham, Discovery and its crew were able to travel to the future through a wormhole. However, Burnham landed on Hima in 3188 . There, she sent the suit and the last red burst through the wormhole. The crystal along with the suit self-destructed and were destroyed. Discovery landed on The Colony on 3189 . ( DIS : " Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 ", " That Hope Is You, Part 1 ", " Far From Home ", " Die Trying ")

Despite the crystal's destruction, Pike still had visions of his eventual fate. The visions that the crystal gave to Pike provided him with specific details of his fate, including the names of the cadets who would be involved in the accident with him. ( SNW : " Strange New Worlds ", " Children of the Comet ")

Future Pike's crystal [ ]

In an alternate timeline where Pike decided to avoid the accident that exposed him to delta radiation , the Federation became engulfed in a devastating war with the Romulan Star Empire . An older Pike was provided with a time crystal by the monks of Boreth, which transported him back in time to 2259 so that he could warn his younger self on the Enterprise about the consequences of changing his fate.

When the younger Pike touched the time crystal, he was taken forward in time to the 2266 experienced by his older self, when his handling of a Romulan Bird-of-Prey 's attack on Earth Outpost Stations led to Spock 's maiming and a Romulan declaration of war. Convinced of the necessity of preserving the original timeline, Pike touched the time crystal again and was returned to the moment when he contemplated changing his fate. Since he decided not to do so, the older Pike and the crystal never appeared. ( SNW : " A Quality of Mercy ")

Where Was Red Angel Until Season 5?

One of the most mysterious characters in the popular sci-fi series Star Trek: Discovery is the Red Angel with its synchronized seven red bust-like signals. After being an integral part of its second season, it has again appeared in the fourth episode of Season 5– Face the Strange.

Written by Sean Cochran and directed by Lee Rose, the episode shows Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) stuck in a time loop jumping from Discovery’s past to present and future experiencing the starship's voyage to the 32nd century. As the Red Angel guides Discovery into the future, Burnham and Rayner watch her through the viewscreen from the bridge of the Discovery surrounded by unconscious crew members.

Burnham’s foster brother Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck) took up drawing as a coping mechanism for his childhood nightmares, which became useful. When those terrifying dreams came back as an adult, Spock drew what would eventually be the seven red signals two months before they first appeared in space, providing Burnham with the first hint to solving the puzzling riddle.

After tracing some of the signals, it was concluded that they led to people in need. One of the signals took the USS Discovery to New Eden planet where the Red Angel had rescued a group of soldiers over two centuries ago. Another signal was tracked to an asteroid carrying the USS Hiawatha saving a dozen of injured officers.

Red Angel’s Appearance In Star Trek: Discovery Season 2

During those times, Burnham first gets a glimpse of the Red Angel as she rescues survivors and encounters death.

While examining Arium's system, a file called Project Daedalus containing Burnham's bio-neural signature, a time-traveling humanoid, was found. However, following a perilous experiment in which Burnham consented to die in order to trick the Red Angel into falling into their trap, it was discovered that her mother Gabrielle (Sonja Sohn) had been traveling through time and space in that highly advanced outfit all along. She has been doing to save the galaxy.

Not just Burnham’s mother, but Burnham herself is also behind the signals. Data from Burnham and her mother were both included in the Red Angel outfit. She is the second time traveler to wear the outfit, as evidence suggests. The red signals are due to future Burnham as Gabrielle kept Burnham alive throughout multiple near-death incidents.

Who Created Red Angel’s Suit?

A temporal arms race began two decades ago when Section 31 learned that the Klingons had begun studying time travel. In an attempt to gain a tactical edge, the secret organization created Project Daedalus, a time-traveling outfit. However, the Klingons destroyed the suit just before they were going to test it, and until those mysterious red signals arrived in the present, the project was assumed to be aborted. Ever since, Section 31 has been making unsuccessful attempts to apprehend the angel and recover their missing technology.

As Burnham crash-landed on a planet after emerging from the wormhole in the 32nd century in the third season, she lost contact with the USS Discovery. She uses the Red Angel suit to scan the galaxy for sign of life to verify that Discovery was successful in stopping Control from destroying life in the galaxy.

Burnham sends the Red Angel suit back through the last wormhole to transmit the seventh and last signal upon learning that the mission was successful. Following which, Burnham programs the suit to destroy itself in order to stop anyone from traveling into the future with Discovery.

Star Trek Just Secretly Hinted At New Spinoff?

Posted: May 3, 2024 | Last updated: May 4, 2024

<p>At the end of Star Trek: Discovery’s second season, the title ship and her crew ended up in the far-flung future, instantly traveling from the 23rd century all the way to the 32nd century. For franchise lore nerds, the time jump was exciting because it helped us to learn that not only were Starfleet and the Federation still around in the future but that these organizations had members from some very surprising planets. For example, the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery’s fifth season revealed (via my new favorite character, Captain Rayner) that the Kellerun, a traitorous species last seen in Deep Space Nine, now have a member in Starfleet.</p>

One cold comfort for Star Trek fans who are sad about the surprise cancellations of both Discovery and Lower Decks is that we have the upcoming Starfleet Academy show to look forward to. Unfortunately, we don’t know when that show will be set, who will star in it, and what it will be like, except that it is a youth-focused show about training the next generation of Starfleet cadets. However, the recent Discovery episode “Whistlespeak” dropped some Galaxy-class hints that Starfleet Academy will be a Discovery spinoff starring Tilly and set on a starship.

<p>Don’t worry…I didn’t have to steal the Red Angel suit and travel forward in time to figure out what the Starfleet Academy show is going to be about. Most of these conclusions came from simple deduction (Spock’s ancestor would be proud) based on watching the most recent season of Discovery. Furthermore, everything centers around Tilly, someone whose more prominent role this season is likely no coincidence.</p>

Starfleet Academy Clues In Discovery Season 5

Don’t worry…I didn’t have to steal the Red Angel suit and travel forward in time to figure out what the Starfleet Academy show is going to be about. Most of these conclusions came from simple deduction (Spock’s ancestor would be proud) based on watching the most recent season of Discovery. Furthermore, everything centers around Tilly, someone whose more prominent role this season is likely no coincidence.

<p>Tilly has been the obvious choice to lead a Starfleet Academy show since Discovery surprisingly moved her off the crew roster and into a teaching position at the newly reformed Academy. One of the Paramount+ flagship show’s most beloved characters starts teaching right before a Starfleet Academy show is announced? It’s even latinum that the show will be a Discovery spinoff (Alex Kurtzman has already revealed it would also be set in the 32nd century) with Tilly as the lead.</p>

Tilly As The New Lead

Tilly has been the obvious choice to lead a Starfleet Academy show since Discovery surprisingly moved her off the crew roster and into a teaching position at the newly reformed Academy. One of the Paramount+ flagship show’s most beloved characters starts teaching right before a Starfleet Academy show is announced? It’s even latinum that the show will be a Discovery spinoff (Alex Kurtzman has already revealed it would also be set in the 32nd century) with Tilly as the lead.

<p>The idea that Tilly will headline the Starfleet Academy show only got stronger when Cinemablend tried to get Mary Wiseman on the record about appearing in the show. Wiseman jokingly responded, “man, don’t try to get to me,” and “we can be friends or we can be enemies.” As the site notes, this isn’t exactly a denial, and there is a possibility (a strong one, in my opinion) that she is operating under an NDA from Paramount.</p>

Mary Wiseman Played It Cool

The idea that Tilly will headline the Starfleet Academy show only got stronger when Cinemablend tried to get Mary Wiseman on the record about appearing in the show. Wiseman jokingly responded, “man, don’t try to get to me,” and “we can be friends or we can be enemies.” As the site notes, this isn’t exactly a denial, and there is a possibility (a strong one, in my opinion) that she is operating under an NDA from Paramount.

<p>Since we already know that Starfleet Academy will be a Discovery spinoff and Wiseman’s sealed lips practically confirm it will feature Tilly, we are left only with the question of what the show will be like. Our first clue came from the Discovery episode “Red Directive,” where Tilly lamented that her students may never understand the importance of being part of a crew. </p>

A Discovery Spin-Off

Since we already know that Starfleet Academy will be a Discovery spinoff and Wiseman’s sealed lips practically confirm it will feature Tilly, we are left only with the question of what the show will be like. Our first clue came from the Discovery episode “Red Directive,” where Tilly lamented that her students may never understand the importance of being part of a crew.

<p>In the later episode, “Whistlespeak,” we learn that one of her cadets is pondering leaving Starfleet Academy for a position on a cargo vessel, and Tilly isn’t even sure if she should talk them out of the decision because this isn’t the first one who wants to leave and “we’re not giving the cadets what they need.”</p>

Clues In Whistlespeak

In the later episode, “Whistlespeak,” we learn that one of her cadets is pondering leaving Starfleet Academy for a position on a cargo vessel, and Tilly isn’t even sure if she should talk them out of the decision because this isn’t the first one who wants to leave and “we’re not giving the cadets what they need.”

<p>Since the upcoming spinoff, Starfleet Academy, sounds like it will be a bunch of teenybopper nonsense, we have an important question for Berman: is it too late for us to borrow that blindfold so we don’t have to see what is happening to this franchise?</p>

Not Confined To The Academy Itself?

Put it all together, and the premise for the upcoming Starfleet Academy show is clear. Tilly, understanding the cadets’ desire to actually explore the galaxy and believing they won’t understand the Starfleet mission until they can function as a crew, is inevitably going to request a vessel from Starfleet in which she will be acting captain and the cadets will be her crew. Narratively, this lets Paramount have it both ways: they’ll still get the youth-centric show about cadets, but in the fine tradition of Star Trek, those cadets will be exploring the galaxy instead of just kicking it around a fixed location.

<p>To me, this Starfleet Academy premise has been so obviously laid out that I will be utterly amazed if Paramount does anything different. Of course, we’re talking about a network that canceled two beloved Star Trek shows (one being their streaming flagship show and the other being the cheapest Trek series to produce) and is currently in danger of getting bought out by Sony. In other words, they could still muck things up, but I’m hoping that Tilly and this new show manage to stick the landing in an unforgettable way.</p>
