- Lauren E 0 contributions 0 5.0 of 5 bubbles Let Ronny Be Your Guide! Ronny was a fantastic tour guide! We got an amazingly well rounded and passionate tour from a man who truly loves and appreciates the history and culture of Montreal. The weather didn't cooperate but Ronny was very thoughtful (and funny) when shepherding us from stop to stop and even gave a bonus stop to share a bit more about the city. The food was of course tasty and came along with very interesting facts. I went on my birthday and at the end of the tour he lead the Happy Birthday song which was a very pleasant surprise. Would highly recommend this tour with Ronny! Eastern Journey
Our trip was in Eastern Canada the first of July 2023. It was a nightmare to figure out how to get to our hotel from the train and subways, up and down soooo many stairs then walking the rest of the way with our luggage mind you. Definitely call for a ride to the hotel. Our first hotel was nice in Toronto. Niagara Falls was fun and definitely something to experience. The tour buses on our whole trip were comfortable and we had great drivers, especially Mike. He was so personable and took really good care of us! The second hotel in Ottawa was good too but when we went to Quebec City that was the worst hotel I’ve ever been in! The beds were uncomfortable, the air conditioner didn’t work well at all, and the shower was messed up and only ran hot water. Then the water wouldn’t shut off so we had to call someone to shut it off with tools. The tub didn’t have anything on the bottom for you to not slip so I slipped getting in and tore the towel rack down which was just glued on. I ended up having to place a towel in the shower where we could take a shower and not fall down. The people that worked there were rude. The carpet in the hallways was disgusting and coming up which is a major trip hazard. One couple that was on the tour with us showed me a piece of metal that fell from his ceiling in his room and hit him in the head. We had to stay two miserable nights there! Our next hotel in Montreal was okay and the last hotel they put us in back in Toronto was a very nice hotel and had a wonderful breakfast. Our guide was nice and informative too. We enjoyed seeing everything we did either while in the bus or walking around the cities. I’m not sure if I will do another group tour or not. Guess we’ll see….
Eastern Canada Discovery (Classic, 8 Days)
Best of Eastern Canada (End Montreal, 9 Days)
Optional excursions were reasonably priced. Suggest you put together other places in each city as a walking guide or short taxi or uber ride. Example access to close by museums open late and could walk to from hotel. Free time activities and what they are and where located is helpful.tour guide can offer to accompany a group interested to explore more during free leisure tome.Provide more detail info about the logistics of site visits. Niagara falls..suggest more water proof gear clothing and shoe types etc. Terrain to expect when visiting certain sites and possible alternatives.climbing and how difficult-easy or more strenuous or advanced climbing activity. Overall, small groups so much better than filling up bus. Thank you for giving single travelers their own bus space. Would love to watch more travel videos on longer driving distances.

Eastern USA & Canada Escape (16 destinations)
Our 22 days exploring Europe with our wonderful guide Karina exceeded all our expectations. Her fun loving nature and energy rubbed off on the group and we made many life long friends from around the world. We saw so much and experienced so many things in such a short time it was mind blowing. Mark drove us around in our comfortable coach with plenty of skill he took a lot of the stress away that we would have had doing it on our own. Hotels were very good. You do need to be fit physically and mentally to make the most out of it and the optional extras were well priced and worth doing. We will certainly travel with Expat again great value and very professional.

What people love about Quebec City Tours
I LOVED this tour. This was my first time as a solo traveller. The tour guide and the driver were both excellent. The experiences were incredible. Trying to arrange the amount of cities, and experiences solo, with hotels, travel etc is not possible for anywhere near the amount paid. Value for money is excellent. Hotels overall were good. There were some that were a little out of the cities, however the tour guide and driver did their best to accommodate by driving everyone back into the city if they wanted to go. Most of the experiences were really good. The Montmorency Falls as an extra trip with meal was a little pricey. There was not enough time at the Falls and the best view would be down the bottom. This could have been a free trip, without the meal, I would suggest this is looked at. Also in Montreal the tour guide who took us round, was not very engaging and it was difficult to hear her. Everything else was spot on. Well organised, excellent value for money, lovely people, beautiful country, wide range of experiences. LOVED IT. Will definitely be doing another tour.
Peter was awesome and knew his stuff.

Traverse the Welland Canal
A marvel of engineering two centuries in the making....
Comprising eight locks that enable ship traffic to travel between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario by bypassing the Niagara River and Niagara Falls, the Welland Canal is a 200-year engineering marvel that actually represents four successive canals. Originally designed and built in the 1820s, a second canal replaced it in the late 1840s, and a third opened in 1887. The construction on the fourth and current Welland Canal – which your ship on "Cruising the Great Lakes" will traverse in about 11 hours, accompanied by an expert guide – began before World War I was not completed until 1932 and expanded some 40 years later.

Most Quebec City tour packages can be customized to according to your interests. Ask about these popular attractions when you book Quebec tour packages from Toronto and other departure points.
Chateau Frontenac
Chateau Frontenac is one of Quebec City' most famous hotels. Located in Old Quebec, the hotel was constructed as part of an effort to restore the neighbourhood to its 17th-century glory. The original funding fell through, so the Canadian Pacific Railway stepped in and built Chateau Frontenac as part of its railway hotel system.
Over the years, the hotel has been renovated several times. World leaders and other famous individuals have also stayed there while visiting Canada, making Chateau Frontenac a popular destination for tourists. When you book your Quebec train tours, ask about staying at Chateau Frontenac or taking a tour while you're sightseeing.
Old Quebec City
Old Quebec City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a unique look and feel. The area has many historic sites, including ramparts built in the late 1690s to protect the city against enemy attack. It's also home to Petit-Champlain, a street packed with boutiques. You'll find everything from handmade jewelry to one-of-a-kind works of art, along with high-end restaurants, murals and excellent examples of French architecture. Enhance your Quebec vacation with a private walking tour led by a local insider.
#1 Travel Tip: Plan to walk around
Quebec City is a highly walkable city, even in Winter. Make time to walk around the cobbled streets and explore unique boutiques and shops in the alleyways. Rue du Trésor is a hidden gem.

Solo Trip to Canada: Should You Go to Quebec City or Montreal?
Y ou don’t need a travel companion or travel with a group to enjoy yourself. Some people prefer the solitude, others want to make new friends, and some like the rewarding feeling of doing something completely on their own.
In the region of Eastern Canada lies two French-speaking and most popular cities in the country, Quebec City and Montreal. Their history and culture are deeply rooted in the French Colonization and what these settlers brought into North America but they are still two very unique and distinct cities.
There are many fantastic things to do in each city, so it’s always hard to decide which one is a priority on your solo adventure. If you have been before you may love each city or not for several different reasons. But for those with wanderlust choosing to come here for the first time, it can be a difficult choice. That’s why we want to help you make an informed decision with our own recommendations and personal experience in each city.
So let’s dive in to see what each of these cities has to offer for you to end up with some good travel stories.
Location and Size
Montreal is the second-largest city in all of Canada, behind Toronto and ahead of Calgary. It’s the largest in the province, with Quebec City being second. Because of this, the location and population sizes are vastly different. Montreal is in the Southwestern part of the province with Quebec City being in the Eastern part. Montreal has a population of over 1.7 million and Quebec City is less than half that number at 557,375 from recent census takers.
This makes a significant difference in both hotel pricing and transportation throughout each city to the food and nightlife we will be comparing below.
Quebec City Hotels
Here in Quebec City, there is more a focus on the historic charm so you will find this inside older historical buildings, sometimes above restaurants and shops. These boutique hotels want to provide you with that classic French-Canadian experience which is both delightful and unique. The only drawback is that some of the rooms may be smaller than you are used to due to the original construction of the building. But does it matter that much if you are going to be out and about most of your day?
Most of these can be found near Old Quebec in small clusters. It also allows easier access to all the attractions and shops you will want to explore during your stay here. You may get lucky and have some rooms with great views of the river and city skyline to add to your trip. They are also budget-friendly to mid-range in price to make up for the space, such as Hotel Clarendon and Hotel Acadia. There are some luxury hotels like the Auberge Saint-Antoine and of course, the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac if you feel like splurging but they all provide acceptable accommodations and isn’t really necessary.
Montreal Hotels
The hotels in Montreal are more luxury hotel chains like Hilton, Ritz-Carlton, and Hyatt with modern contemporary designs. You also have more budget-friendly boutique hotels like Hotel Faubourg Montreal and Chateau Versailles Hotel. With additional features like rooftop bars and indoor high-end restaurants, you’re going to have a more cosmopolitan vibe here. Most are anywhere between 3 to 5 stars and there always seems to be available rooms all year-round.
Recommendation: Quebec City
Quebec City Transportation
Due to the layout and size of the city, the transportation here differs from Montreal. There is a public transit system but no metro system in this city. The public buses focus mainly on the city and the closest neighborhoods. Because of this, there is less coverage of the entire area resulting in longer wait times between buses if you are on the city outskirts. Tickets are affordable with single rides or day passes for your schedule.
You of course have the better option of a ride service as Uber is the most popular here. Once you arrive in the city center and attractions it’s less of a hassle to get around. It’s also a bike-friendly city with designated lanes and rental stations, especially in Old Quebec if you rather not walk.
Montreal Transportation
In Montreal, you have a commuter train, metro system, and bus network. You can get anywhere in the city easily with these transportation options. It has less of a wait time and better access for you. It’s a bit more expensive compared to Quebec City transportation but less than if you were to use a rideshare service. But the upside is you have more ticket options, including various discounts and unlimited travel. This works out better if you are staying for a longer period.
The downside is that this isn’t a completely walkable city. You will need to take some breaks to rest your feet and reliable transportation to get to some of the popular attractions and neighborhoods.
Recommendation: Montreal
Quebec City Cuisine
The food in Quebec City is of course more focused on the city’s French heritage. You will find plenty of fine dining eating options here. There is a focus of course on artisanal cheeses to go along with the game meats such as venison, wild boar, and caribou. Try the traditional dishes such as tourtière and of course, poutine, finishing off with a pouding chômeur dessert. Just be open-minded in trying something new and not go with your usual entree.
There is also a thriving cider community here as well. You can take a short day trip to Ile d’Orelans for a sightseeing tour of the many apple orchards and enjoy the unique regional beverages. The farmers markets here are usually seasonal but there are a lot of them. All the fresh and local produce being brought in is perfect if you are staying somewhere with a usable kitchen for homemade meals.
Montreal Cuisine
The culinary choices in Montreal are much wider than Quebec City being that you are in a metropolitan area. You can go from French to Chinese to Mexican to Contemporary to Italian all in the same area. There are plenty of fine dining choices and fusion mixes so you will always have a variety to choose from.
Montreal also has a larger public food market in comparison. You have the Jean-Talon Market, the largest and oldest open-air market on the entire continent as well as the smaller markets of Atwater and Maisonneuve. This is the recommended best place for foodies to enjoy all the delicious highlights while in Canada.
Quebec City Culture and Attractions
As Quebec City dates back to the 1600s, its focus is more on the history and culture, especially centered in Old Town with cobblestone streets. The more European feel it gives in North America is what makes it so attractive for tourism. It’s no wonder with the attractions that it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site There is really where you want to spend more of your time while you are here.
You can take your picture at the most photographed hotel in the world, the Chateau Frontenac, and then make your way down to the lower level to walk around the Petit Champlain. If you don’t feel like exploring solo, you can find locally guided tours to take you through the city and give you a more detailed history lesson.
Montreal Culture and Attractions
Montreal may have strong French influences but its culture is extremely diverse and has that atmosphere of being cosmopolitan. You can see that is aptly called neighborhoods like Little Italy, Chinatown, Latin Village, and so on. While still rich in culture and history, there are also more modern museums to explore. They are more comprehensive with subjects in contemporary art, science, natural history, and insects.
Quebec City Nightlife
In Quebec City, the nightlife here follows the same type of culture as it does in France. You will find it pretty active and vibrant throughout the season in the after-hours. The popular street of Rue Saint-Jean is filled with restaurants and bars close enough together that it’s easy to hop from one place to another and sample different drinks. The central square of Place d’Youville has ice rink skating during the winter and across the street is the Theatre Capitole for performing arts with live bands and musical performances. There are also plenty of nightclubs for those of you who feel like dancing.
There is just a sense of community still even when you are out for a night on the town. Maybe because you can walk wherever you need to go in a city of this size. Everything doesn’t seem to be packed in like a city and instead, you have room to breathe and walk around and enjoy the cool night air.
Montreal Nightlife
The nightlife here in Montreal is typical of any major city but with some slight differences. Such as there is a premium contemporary casino located on the island of Ile Notre-Dame. One of the largest casinos in the world, it will be worth checking out even if you aren’t a gambler.
Neighborhoods like Gay Village and Plateau-Mont-Royal along with Crescent Street just come alive even more when the sun is down. You’ve got cabaret drag shows, upscale cocktail lounges, speakeasies, musical jazz clubs, and lowkey pubs to just relax. Or if you feel like just taking a stroll you can see street performers at popular squares. There is something for everyone’s taste here.
Choose Quebec City if you are:
- Looking more for a European, medieval feel in the architecture and city streets
- Traditional Quebecois cuisine and culture
- Want a more quiet, less active, relaxing trip
Choose Montreal if you are:
- Looking to sample multiple cuisines in various neighborhoods
- You want a larger city to explore
- Want a more active, adventurous trip
Both cities have their positives and no real negatives to help deter you from picking either one, or even both if time permits. It comes down to your own personal preferences and maybe your potential budget. With Canada, you will always find it difficult to not have a good trip. Just always remember when you are on your solo journey, to travel safely.

Quebec Premier Francois Legault is defending his comments about a new history museum after he was accused by a group representing First Nations of trying to erase their history.
Quebec premier says new Quebecois museum will talk about Indigenous people, and isn't trying to erase their history Back to video
The Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador criticized Legault’s April 25 comments that suggested the province’s history began with the arrival of French explorers Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain in the 16th and 17th centuries.

During his announcement of a new Quebec national history museum, the premier paid tribute to Quebec’s history, saying it “started with the explorers, Cartier then Champlain, who was the founder of our nation.”
The Assembly of First Nations also criticized historian Eric Bedard who was present at the event and was quoted telling reporters that history begins with writing, and that therefore “the Indigenous people represent a bit the prehistory of Quebec.”
In a news release on Tuesday, the assembly said, “By excluding the First Peoples from Quebec’s history in the conception of the future national museum, the premier and the historian implicitly contribute to the systematic erasure of our common past.”
Chief Ghislain Picard said the comments by Legault and Bedard were unacceptable. “We are inseparable from the history of this land, and the arrival of Champlain does not define Quebec,” he said in the news release.
“The First Nations have been present here for millenniums and are deeply attached to the territory they occupy. To suggest that we are prehistory amounts to relegating us to a secondary role, while our contribution to the formation of modern Quebec is fundamental.”
On Wednesday, Legault told reporters that the new Musee national de l’histoire du Quebec will focus specifically on the history of the French-speaking Quebecois nation. The 11 Indigenous nations in Quebec likely don’t consider themselves part of the Quebecois nation, he said, adding that their contributions will nonetheless be included in the museum.
“The idea is to show the history of the nation that was French-Canadian and now Quebecois, that started with Champlain,” he said in Quebec City. “But clearly we’ll talk about the Indigenous people who were there before we arrived.”
He said his government is open to working with Indigenous nations to ensure their history is recognized.
Employment Minister Kateri Champagne Jourdain, who is Innu, told reporters Wednesday, “the history of the First Nations is intimately linked to the development of the Quebec nation.”
And Culture Minister Mathieu Lacombe said the museum will not exclude Indigenous Peoples. He said the histories of Quebecers and Indigenous Peoples “are interconnected.”
The national history museum is scheduled to open in 2026 and cost about $92 million. To be located inside the Seminaire de Quebec, the museum will honour Quebecois artists such as Celine Dion and Les Cowboys Fringants, as well as authors, sporting heroes and business successes.
In his speech in April, Legault said Quebec’s more than 400-year-old history started with the French explorers, and he praised female “builders,” such as Jeanne Mance, before adding, “It’s important to highlight the presence of Indigenous nations who were here before us and who helped us over the years.”

The funicular can also help people who have more difficulty to get around: you can walk down and use the funicular to reach the Upper Town or use it in both directions.
Old Québec VS downtown
Québec City incorporates Old Québec as well as central neighbourhoods and other neighbourhoods near downtown. The central neighbourhoods are concentrated in a relatively small area. Each one has its own vibe with unique food, shops and places to mingle with the locals and have a good time.

- Francesco Passaro (ITA) bat Arthur Rinderknech (FRA) 6-7 (3/7), 7-5, 7-6 (9/7)
- Jaume Munar (ESP) bat Rinky Hijikata (AUS) 6-4, 7-5
- Stefano Napolitano (ITA) bat J.J. Wolf (USA) 6-2, 7-6 (7/3)
- Thiago Wild (BRA) bat Grégoire Barrère (FRA) 6-4, 6-2
- Dominik Koepfer (GER) bat Andrea Vavassori (ITA) 6-4, 6-3
- Hamad Medkedovic (SRB) bat Alexei Popyrin (AUS) 6-3, 6-2
