Based on hundreds of guest reviews, Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is an excellent base for trekking mountain gorillas in the south of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Nkuringo Sector and Rushaga Sector .

The lodge is a six-time winner at the World Travel Awards (WTA) as Uganda’s Leading Safari Lodge and TripAdvisor travelers’ Choice Awards since 2015.

The mountain gorilla lodge is thoughtfully comfortable and concentrates on cheerful African hospitality, which complements its superb location and function as the base for gorilla trekking adventures in the south of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Unspoiled and untamed, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the world’s last remaining rich ecosystems. It is spread over a series of steep ridges and valleys that form a protective habitat for the mountain gorillas , the main attractions in this pristine jungle.

The Nkuringo section of the forest is home to three Mountain Gorilla families . Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge provides a prime access point to the start of the excellent gorilla trekking activity. And about a 25-minute drive away from the Rushaga gorilla trekking sector, it has eight habituated gorilla families and is also an alternative to trekking Nkuringo gorilla groups.

A sustainable stay at the lodge

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is entirely eco-friendly , with its design inspired and built with natural materials locally sourced within the communities that surround the lodge. It is owned and operated by a Uganda family whose values are deeply rooted in the sustainability of local communities surrounding the lodge.

The lodge is one of the few Carbon Neutral Certified properties in Uganda. It harvests all the water used at the property, distributing the surplus to the community through its Bwindri Drop Project . It has a tree-planting program that encourages all guests to “plant a tree” in the beautifully maintained gardens. The beautifully thought Pack for Purpose program connects every guest who can carry a small gift in their luggage to the low-income families living in villages nearby.

This mountain gorilla lodge entirely uses solar power for light and natural gas for heating and cooking, and it has an onsite fresh vegetable garden to supply the kitchen.

Through their fair-trade policy, Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge uses local guides to support their pioneer walking safaris around Bwindi . The program skills local guides with training courses. It extends support to their children in the Nkuringo Junior Stars Program with a primary focus on the girl-child staying in school while their parent earns a comfortable,  sustainable income.

If you are hoping to positively impact the local communities around mountain gorillas with sustainable lodging, Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is the best hotel.

Safari Activities

Chimpanzee tracking.

Tracking chimpanzees in their natural habitat, as they swing from the branches in the canopy high above the forest floor is nothing short of exhilarating. The chimps effortlessly cross and scamper through the trees above the gorge, and visitors on the other hand must cross the river using natural bridges in order to keep up with the chimps. So although the walk usually lasts only 2–3 hours, descending the steep gorge and crossing the log bridges over the river requires some agility and fitness.

Chimpanzee tracking is also available in nearby Kalinzu, a forest reserve 30 minutes drive from Kyambura Gorge Lodge where there is a community of about 40 habituated chimpanzees.

Whilst ecotourism has undoubtedly achieved remarkable success, it is imperative to acknowledge the existing challenges that pose a threat to the continued existence of the majestic mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

Things to see in bwindi.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a historical forest which endured the massive tectonic plate shift that resulted to the formation of the beautiful western rift valley. Bwindi means dark, complex and ferocious place.

The reason why it was named so is because the name explains the impenetrable nature of the forest considering in some parts the tree canopy is very thick that light cannot easily penetrate down to the ground. Bwindi Forest is notably known for the best gorilla trekking in Uganda and Africa with a myriad of other natural endowments, including flora, birds, mammals, swamps and scenic waterfalls.

Bwindi impenetrable forest is not completely impassable, however the travelers can track through to encounter with the endangered mountain gorillas that live in this park. The park also accommodates other primates such as Vervet monkeys, olive baboons, red tailed monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, civets and wildlife such as Duiker antelopes, bush babies, bush pigs, forest hogs, side-stripped jackals, clawless otter, golden cats and many others.

The park also houses more than 340 bird species and varied vegetation types including bamboo and alpine vegetation species. This tropical rain forest harbors about 480 of the remaining 1060 endangered mountain gorillas left in the whole world.

This means that almost half of the world’s population lives in Bwindi National Park . The remaining population lives in the Virunga Region that is comprised of the Mgahinga National Park of Uganda, the Volcanoes National Park of Rwanda and the Virunga National Park of DR Congo.

Bwindi offers the highest number of gorilla permits! Up to 18 gorilla families have been habituated for gorilla trekking and a total of 144 visitors can track the habituated families distributed within the four distinct gorilla regions.

Things to Do in Bwindi

The trails include the Munyanga River trail, Muzubijiro loop trail, the Rushura trail, Bamboo trail that comes with 14 varied vegetation types, Ivy River trail and the water trail.

About Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

An ancient highland rainforest steeped in blankets of mist, discover the allure of Bwindi Impenetrable Impenetrable National Park. A designated UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its ecological importance, this rainforest dates back 25,000 years & in this time has accumulated an incredibly diverse range of flora & fauna. Most notably the mountain gorillas, with just under half the world’s remaining population being protected amongst the park boundaries. It’s these ecological marvels that draw visitors from all over the world, & so they too can experience the wonders of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Sectors of Bwindi Forest

Since Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is vast, it has been divided into four gorilla regions which are open to travelers who wish to undertake gorilla safaris and these include; Buhoma, Rushaga, Ruhija and Nkuringo. Every region has its own gorilla families that can be trekked on any given day of the year.

Buhoma Sector

Buhoma is the popular region because it is where gorilla trekking started from in Bwindi way back in 1993. This sector is located in the northern direction of the park in the lowest altitude. The region has 3 habituated gorilla groups namely Mubare group, Rushegura group, Habinyanja group. Sometimes these gorilla groups visit different accommodation facilities in the area hence offering a memorable experience for the travelers on a gorilla trekking safari in Uganda. Travelers first trekked gorillas in Buhoma in 1993 and Mubare was the pioneer gorilla family to be trekked because it was the only group habituated in the park but other sectors, Rushegura and Habinyanja were habituated and trekked in consequent years of 1997 and 2000 respectively.

Rushaga region is another sector where gorillas can be trekked. It is found in the southern side of the park and the region has 5 gorilla habituated groups, namely Nshongi group, Mishaya group, Busingye group, Kahungye group and Bweza group. Rushaga sector is found in the high altitude, therefore it is dominated by hills and because of this, gorilla families have kept on separating in order to take up different hills in the region. Travelers that trek gorillas in Rushaga sector tend to enjoy great scenic views and at some point, they can as well see the Virunga ranges in Rwanda and Uganda such as Mountain Gahinga, Muhabura, Sabinyo, Karisimbi and others. Travelers can also enjoy a canoe ride on Lake Mutanda, one of the only two lava lakes in Uganda after the gorilla trek encounter.

Ruhija sector found in the eastern direction of the park and has 3 gorilla habituated families namely Bitukura group, Oruzogo group and Kyaguriro group. Ruhija sector is located in an altitude of 2350 meters and it is 1000 meters higher than Buhoma. However this place is also a great point for bird watching, visiting the indigenous Batwa communities and viewing the stunning waterfalls.

Nkuringo Sector

Nkuringo is found in the south western corner of the park and is among the impressive places in Bwindi Impenetrable forest. Nkuringo is steep and a bit more demanding to trek but when travelers meet face to face with the endangered mountain gorillas that are habituated in this area, they will certainly accept that it was worthwhile. Nkuringo only has one gorilla habituated family, named after this region – Nkuringo gorilla group. Gorilla trekking here is not the only tourist activity but there are some other interesting activities travelers can participate in, which include hiking, nature walks, cultural encounter, birding and many others. Bwindi impenetrable forest is the best destination for travelers to face the endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

Plan Your Trip to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Congratulations on choosing to travel to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. You’ve decided to Visit the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park! You won’t regret it – now let’s get planning. Whether you are planning to go on a Uganda safari ? Would you like to go gorilla trekking or take a nature walk, Bwindi Forest is a great place to be.

What is the Cost of Bwindi Gorilla Permits?

Gorilla permits are essential tools on any gorilla trip and each is issued to guests at US$ 800 per person (for foreign nonresidents), US$ 700 per person under category of foreign residents, while all East African citizens of East African Community member states pay UGX300,000 per person.

What Comes with your Gorilla Permit?

A valid gorilla permit allows you not only to track a family of gorillas but to spend 1 hour face-to-face with these amazing species while in their natural habitat. This is a rare experience, a great opportunity to also explore in depth more about their daily behaviors.

When Should you Travel for a Gorilla Tour in Bwindi?

All habituated gorilla families in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park are open to tourists to track at any time of the day, week, month or year. However, the most preferred time to have excellent trek with a family of mountain gorillas in the wild is during the dry season –June, July, August, September or December, January to February.

With the dry months of the year, there is minimal or completely no rains recorded and the ground remains relatively drier. This makes it easier to search for a family of habituated gorilla group in the park unlike the wet or rainy season which is characterized by heavy down pour and steep slopes tend to be slippery and the ground in most cases is muddy.

What the Trip is Like

The hikes to see the mountain gorillas can last anywhere from 3 to 6 hours over moderately steep, thickly forested, and uneven terrain, and the climate will be hot and humid. Gorilla tracking will occasionally feel strenuous as we hike uphill to follow the clans, but we will take breaks along the way.  The shape you're in will be an important factor in your enjoyment of these hikes. Make an effort to get in good physical condition with hiking, biking, running, or other kinds of exercise beyond your normal routine. A brisk 30-45 minute walk every other day over moderately steep terrain can do wonders for your conditioning.

The climate in Uganda is considered “modified tropical”—similar to the equatorial climate of other East African countries like Kenya and Tanzania, but slightly modified by its altitude, which ranges from 3,500 to 4,500 feet. Daytime temperatures are usually in the 70s and 80s, and humidity is fairly high. You can expect to experience some rain during the course of the trip. Like Kenya and Tanzania, Uganda has two annual rainy seasons, one between March and May and one between October and November.

June, July and August During these months, the country is refreshingly green and the weather is coolest, especially in the higher altitudes, with a high of 70°-80°F and a low of 40°F. Riding in the safari vehicle can be chilly some mornings, but the temperature usually warms up by 10:00 am.

September, October and November These are delightful times to visit Uganda and can be compared to springtime in the US. The jacaranda and other trees are bursting into blossom and the days are warmer. The high temperatures are 75°-85°F, with a low of 65°F. Scattered rains occur in November and early December. These “short rains” just freshen the country and lay the dust, although they can sometimes be heavy.

December to March These are Uganda's “summer” months. The temperature range is from 80° to 90°F during the day (coastal areas are hotter and can range from 80° to 100°). The evenings range from 50° to 60°F.

April and May The rainy season (the “long rains”) occur during these months.

Our accommodations will be in comfortable hotels, safari lodges, and tented camps with spacious tents equipped with en suite facilities.

During game drives in our 4WD vehicles, we guarantee window seating for all—there's no taking turns on who gets the window seats. We use five- or seven-passenger safari vehicles (never minibuses!), and all vehicles have roof hatches for easy wildlife viewing and photography. A cooler of drinks and refreshments is carried aboard. And our 4WD vehicles can go virtually anywhere, an important feature when we're tracking game. Please note there are some long driving days over rough roads and dusty dirt tracks.

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

  • Royal Rajasthan and Villages of India

Mission Africa Safaris

3 Days Gorilla Trekking Safari in Bwindi Uganda – Starting from Kigali or Entebbe

3 Days Uganda gorilla trekking in Bwindi starts in Kigali Rwanda or Entebbe/Kampala Uganda. Starting and ending in Rwanda offers a shorter drive. It involves visiting the Batwa pygmies for a cultural experience. The Batwa pygmies were the original inhabitants of the Bwindi impenetrable forest park before they were relocated outside the park to pave way for mountain gorilla conservation .

3 Days Uganda Gorilla Tour

Bwindi is the only park where both chimpanzees and mountain gorillas are found. There are currently 15 habituated gorilla groups open to gorilla trekking in Bwindi. Bwindi is special from all the other mountain gorilla parks because visitors can take part in a 3 days gorilla habituation experience . This experience gives visitors more time with the primates and in the company of very knowledgeable international researchers.

3 Day gorilla trek Uganda

Though the overall population of mountain gorillas are growing and are now over 1000, they remain endangered. Protecting them is very important because Mountain gorillas have not been known to survive in captivity. An attempt was made to keep them in enclosed facilities in the 1970’s but no infant survived. None of the adult gorillas survived for long in captivity. Only lowland gorillas have been found to thrive in captivity. Because of their fragile nature and economic value, mountain gorillas are highly protected. Like we already mentioned, the government of Uganda evicted the Batwa pygmies away from Bwindi and Mgahinga national park just to create more room for the mountain gorillas.

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Forest offers visitors 17 gorilla families to choose from. One group in Rushaga sector of Bwindi has been earmarked for the mountain gorilla habituation experience . You can check out the shorter 2 day gorilla trekking Uganda package.

Below is a detailed travel guide for visitors looking for this experience; Generally; Uganda is characterized by pleasant warm and tropical climate with insignificant seasonal variations hence making it the best destination that can be visited through the year. Uganda has wetter months that make some activities very difficult to undertake. Therefore; it is advised to factor in the climatic patterns while planning for your 3 days Bwindi gorilla trekking safari tours in Uganda. Temperatures in Uganda are affected by altitude and the average hotness is about 21.5°C or 71°F and a minimum degree is always at 12°C or 54°F at night time. The country is also crossed by the equator with annual rainfall ranging between 1,000 and 2,000 millimeters.

March to mid-May

We advise visitors looking for mountain gorilla trekking safari in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga National Park to avoid this season due too heavy rainfall received during this period that affects gorilla tracking experiences through making the trails slippery and movements difficult to trackers. The access roads to either Bwindi or Mgahinga tend to be affected by heavy rain down pour as well.

Mid May to mid-October

This is the longest dry season with perfect conditions for gorilla trekking safaris in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park. We strongly recommend visitors to book their holiday tours during this time. However; this is normally a peak season and prices for accommodation tend to go higher hence affecting the price of packages at times. Yes, it is always dry season during these months but we advise you to pack waterproof clothing because weather is unpredictable in Uganda. Chances of spotting other wildlife in different parks are also high if you intend to extend your trip to other destinations like Queen Elizabeth national park, Kibale forest national park and Murchisons falls national park.

Mid-October to November

This period experiences short rains and gorilla trekking safari in Bwindi may be slightly harder due to wet grounds and forest cover however; these are great months for bird watching tours in Uganda as trees and plants tend to flower and attract a number of bird species. It is even possible to enjoy specialist birding tours at the end of heavy rainfall. Also, during this period, photography is also perfect due to blue skies that create some great, clear images.

December to February

This is also another peak season in Uganda characterized by dry climatic conditions good for wildlife sightings and allows outdoor activities such as hiking and climbing. Our preferred months for Bwindi gorilla trekking safari in Uganda are February and September due to available preferential rates and it is less crowded than the traditional peak months of Christmas and peak summer months.

At times, permits tend to run out two months prior to their respective trekking dates. Gorilla trekking safaris in Uganda are conducted in Bwindi Impenetrable forest National Park and in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. However due to inconsistency of gorilla families in Mgahinga as compared to Bwindi Impenetrable forest National Park, tour operators prefer purchasing gorilla permits for Bwindi Impenetrable forest National Park and a total of 72 visitors may track gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable forest National Park to see gorillas in all the trekking sectors on a daily basis. We therefore advise guests to book and acquire gorilla trekking permits through a safari agent to avoid mistakes such as; booking for permits in a sector far away from your choice of accommodation. Guests intending to make a direct booking with UWA should note that the roads to Bwindi are very remote and are not accurate on google maps, this may be hard for visitors to access the park, or at times may miss out the activity hence incurring unplanned cost like rebooking permits and booking for extra night Contact us today to book for this 3-day gorilla trekking safari in Bwindi Uganda, we have highly trained safari planners to craft for you customized gorilla tours in Africa!

Detailed Itinerary

After your early morning meal, your safari guide will pick you up from your Kampala hotel at 8 AM and transfer you to Bwindi National Park to kick start your 3 day Gorilla Trekking Safari . The Mbarara-Masaka Highway, a well-terrain tarmacked road, will next take you to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park . You will make a halt at Kayabwe, Mpigi district, at the well-known equator stop. Photographs will be taken at the equator monuments. These two equator monuments trace the equator’s path across Uganda.

You’ll then proceed to the Igongo Cultural Centre for lunch. This enormous cultural center is about 12 kilometers from Mbarara Town and is a wonderful stop for many visitors en way to western Uganda. The Igongo Cultural Centre first opened its doors to the public in 2010. While you’re here, take a quick look around the centre’s museum, which has a lot to say about Western cultural past. You may also stop by the Nkwanzi crafts and bookshop to pick up a few mementos for yourself.

After a substantial meal, travel to Bwindi, where you will check into your hotel, enjoy dinner and overnight at your booked accommodation facility .

Accommodation

  • Buhoma Lodge – luxury
  • Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge – midrange
  • Bakiga Lodge – budget

This is the day you’ve been looking forward to. Eat breakfast at your lodge as soon as possible since your guide will take you up at 6 a.m. You’ll take a short drive to the Parks headquarters in Buhoma. You are expected to be at Buhoma at 7 a.m. for a briefing by the park’s chief ranger, which will begin at 8 a.m., and then you will be divided into groups of 8 people based on the gorilla troop you will be tracking. Tracking begins at 8:30 a.m., so make every effort to stay on time.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park includes 15 habituated gorilla groups that may be monitored from four different trailheads. Three of the 15 habituated gorilla groups may be found in the Buhoma area in the park’s northwest corner, four in Ruhija in the park’s eastern corner, and eight in Nkuringo and Rushaga, both in the park’s south.

3 day Bwindi Mountain Gorilla Tracking

Each tracking party is limited to eight people, and each group is led by a park ranger and a park guide. Tracking can take anywhere from one to six hours, depending on how readily and quickly the gorillas are located. Once you’ve found a gorilla family, you’ll have exactly one hour with them; hence, make the most of your time and don’t forget to shoot lots of images without using your camera’s flash. Because the tracking routes can be quite damp, steep, and slippery, you should wear appropriate hiking boots.

After your tracking activity within Bwindi Impenetrable Forest you will return to your lodge for lunch after which you will transfer to Lake Bunyonyi for your overnight stay.

Length: Nine days Starting price: $4,800

For an inside-out trip through the natural wonders of Botswana, Discover Africa's nine-day trip through the country's sprawling game reserves and national parks is a formidable option. You'll start out at a riverside lodge on the Chobe River – a great location for spotting elephants – before moving on to the marshy Okavango Delta, a wildlife-rich area where you can spot a huge range of animals like leopards, rhinos, hippos and more. The safari ends at the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, a good place to admire wildlife such as zebras and buffalo on the savannah as well as the ethereal white salt pans from a former lake.

You'll stay in upscale lodges and camps within close reach of the wilderness. All meals and transport along the tour are included in the price tag (which starts at $4,800 per person and varies by time of year), but international flights to get to Botswana are excluded.

Length: Eight days Starting price: About $4,160 for self-drive option

If you're looking to have a broader experience that mixes in some local history and beach time, consider Wild Wings Safaris' eight-day Battlefields, Bush & Beach Safari. With an itinerary focused on the east of South Africa, you'll start off visiting some of the country's historic sites from the Boer wars, including locations where local Zulu warriors defeated the British, before moving on to Phinda Private Game Reserve. This park doesn't allow day visitors, so you should be able to look out for the "big five" without too many crowds.

The tour wraps up at Thonga Beach Lodge, where you can snorkel or scuba dive near coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. Kayaking and walks through coastal forests are other activities on offer here. As far as safaris go, this one is a somewhat more affordable option, starting at about $4,160 per person with all meals included as well as a rental car; for the cheapest price, you will need to drive yourself between the destinations, but it's possible to pay an additional fee for a driver to guide you instead.

Length: Four days Starting price: $1,015

This tour company kicks off many of its tours from the majestic Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, with a host of safaris that range from three to nine days, across Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana, including some family-friendly choices. For an affordable option, consider the four-day Discover Victoria Falls, Chobe National Park and Hwange National Park safari. It will take you on two full-day tours to Chobe National Park in Botswana and Hwange, Zimbabwe's largest national park, where you should keep your eyes peeled for lions, elephants and more, while also visiting rural villages. This safari includes a wildlife spotting boat cruise on the Chobe River as well.

The price starts at $1,015 per person, which includes the tours plus breakfast, lunch and well-rated lodging in Victoria Falls. Travelers will need to pay for their own travel to Victoria Falls. Dinners aren't included, although you'll be staying in the town of Victoria Falls, with access to restaurants.

Length: Eight days Starting price: Contact company for pricing details.

Explore the savannah and deserts of southwest Africa with Compass Odyssey's eight-day Namibia Wildlife Safari. You'll visit a community-based conservation area in Damaraland – known for its desert-adapted elephants, oryx, giraffes and other wildlife – while staying in the rustic-chic Doro Nawas Camp. Travelers will also spend two days in Etosha National Park, seeking wildlife like giraffes, zebras and elephants at the park's bustling waterholes by day and embarking on an evening game drive with a knowledgeable ranger as well.

The company provides prices on request. The tour includes most meals and all park entry fees, but not flights or the optional "Cheetah Walk." Compass Odyssey allows the tour to be customized on request.

Expert Africa: Big Cat Fly-in Safari

Lewa Safari Camp animal sightings with Expert Africa.

Length: Nine days Starting price: $5,010

Expert Africa offers safaris and other tours in a host of African countries. For a relatively classic tour, consider the Big Cat Fly-in Safari. It offers two different looks at Kenya's stellar wildlife. Firstly, you'll fly north for four nights at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, a sanctuary that channels all its profits into protecting the wildlife in its roughly 100-square-mile reserve. You'll stay in classic tented rooms and enjoy three-course dinners, with the option of going on horse- or camelback safaris for an extra fee.

Despite the tour name, you're most likely to see elephants, giraffes, zebras and rhinos here. In fact, you're more likely to see big cats at the tour's second stop, when you fly south to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The tour company reports a high success rate for travelers spotting lions (and a decent chance of spotting leopards or cheetahs too). Here, you'll spend four days in upscale tents and have the option of soaring over the plains in a hot air balloon. The tour starts at $5,010 for eight nights, with all transport within Kenya included – although Expert Africa customizes most of its tours, so you can likely adjust your safari to your preferences.

Volcanoes Safari: 7 Day Gorilla and Chimpanzee Safari

The Deluxe Room at Bwindi Lodge from Volcanoes Safaris.

Courtesy of Volcanoes Safaris

Length: Seven days Starting price: $8,430

If you're looking to spot some great apes, Volcanoes Safari focuses exclusively on primate tours within Rwanda and Uganda – and with partnerships with the Jane Goodall Institute and Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, they're responsible too. One of its signature tours, this seven-day itinerary kicks off in Uganda, taking travelers to the famed Kyambura Gorge to spot chimpanzee communities, as well as on a trek through the Bwindi Forest to look for gorillas.

But it's not all about monkeys: The tour also includes chances to see lions on the Ugandan plains and to meet locals engaging in cooperative work raising bees and roasting coffee. Along the way, guests stay in stylish lodges with views of Uganda's mountains and forests. The tour starts at $8,430 per person based on double occupancy in the low season, with all meals included.

Vaccination and visa requirements for African countries

Some popular safari destinations may require you to have received certain vaccinations in order to enter the country as a tourist. Although COVID-19 vaccination requirements no longer exist, it's not uncommon for countries to require you to be vaccinated against illnesses such as yellow fever before departing on your trip. Be sure to bring proof of vaccinations with you. If you are transiting through another country en route to your safari tour, you must check that you also meet immunization requirements for the stopover location.

For many destinations, there are a number of other vaccinations that aren't mandatory but are still recommended, such as for cholera or rabies. Consult with a doctor and ensure you're up to date and fully protected before you travel. In addition, many safari locations are prone to malaria; you should consult with your doctor about potentially bringing anti-malaria medication on your trip.

Safari countries have varying visa requirements for travelers from the U.S. – these are detailed below. Depending on your itinerary, you may need a single- or multiple-entry visa, and some visas require you to apply in advance of traveling and/or have a certain number of blank pages in your passport. Regardless of destination, your passport should be valid for at least six months before you leave for your trip.

Here are the vaccine and visa requirements for major safari destinations as of July 2024:

Botswana: If you have recently visited or transited through a country where yellow fever is common, you will need to be vaccinated against this illness. This does not include the U.S. but does include a number of countries in Africa as well as Central and South America. Consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's list of countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, including Kenya and Uganda.

U.S. citizens and nationals can stay in Botswana for 90 days per year without a visa.

Kenya: Kenya is a country where you'll be at risk of yellow fever transmission; it also requires those traveling from other places where yellow fever is endemic to be vaccinated against it. The CDC recommends that you protect yourself against yellow fever before your trip here.

Americans need an eVisa to enter Kenya. You should apply online at the eVisa government website no less than two weeks before your trip, as visas are not available upon arrival in Kenya. See more on the U.S. Department of State's website .

Namibia: Those traveling from a country where yellow fever is common need to be vaccinated against it. No visa is required as long as you're staying for 90 days or less per year.

Rwanda: If you're coming from a country where yellow fever is endemic, a yellow fever vaccination is required before departure.

U.S. citizens and nationals can be issued a 30-day visitor visa on arrival in Rwanda or through the Rwandan Embassy in Washington, D.C. A single-entry visa costs $50 for a single entry or $70 for multiple entries, and it's recommended you bring sufficient cash in U.S. dollars to pay for this (although credit card payment may be accepted at Kigali International Airport). Consult the State Department website for more information.

South Africa: A yellow fever vaccination is required if you're traveling from a country with a risk of transmission, including transits of 12 hours or longer in such countries. No visa is required for stays of 90 days or less.

Tanzania: Yellow fever vaccines are mandatory if you're traveling from a location where yellow fever is present – including if you spend more than 12 hours in transit in such a country. The vaccine should be administered 10 days or more before arrival

Visas are required for tourism in Tanzania. You can apply for a single-entry, 90-day visa online for $50 or a multiple-entry, one-year visa for $100. Be sure to print a copy of the approval (called a "grant notice") to bring with you. The processing period takes up to 10 days. You can also obtain a single-entry visa on arrival in most cases, although the Tanzanian government still recommends the advance online application. Find more Tanzanian visa information on the State Department website .

Uganda: Like Kenya, Uganda is a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. All visitors must show proof of vaccination against yellow fever to enter Uganda, regardless of where you're traveling from.

American visitors to Uganda must apply online for an electronic visa before departure. The processing time is around seven days, but the Ugandan government recommends applying 30 days before you travel; arriving in Uganda without completing this process could result in your detainment. A single-entry visa costs $50. Visit the State Department website to learn more.

Zambia: Yellow fever vaccines are only required if you're coming from an area considered at risk, including long transits (12 hours or more) through such countries. Visas are not required for U.S. citizens visiting Zambia. Check the State Department website for more details.

Zimbabwe: As with other countries on this list, visitors from countries with yellow fever outbreaks require a vaccine against this illness. This includes long transit stopovers of 12 hours or more.

U.S. visitors can obtain a 30-day, single-entry visa upon arrival in Zimbabwe for $30. If you're taking a tour that requires you to leave and reenter Zimbabwe, be sure to get a double-entry visa for $45. You can learn more from the State Department website .

Bwindi Gorillas

The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is inhabited by a population of about 459 individual mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei), known as the Bwindi population, which makes up almost half of all the mountain gorillas in the world. The rest of the worldwide mountain gorilla population is in the nearby Virunga National Park. A 2006 census of the mountain gorilla population in the park showed that its numbers had increased modestly from an estimated 300 individuals in 1997 to 320 individuals in 2002 to 340 individuals in 2006. Disease and habitat loss are the greatest threat to the gorillas. Poaching is also a threat.

Research on the Bwindi population lags behind that of the Virunga National Park population, but some preliminary research on the Bwindi gorilla population has been carried out by Craig Stanford. This research has shown that the Bwindi gorilla’s diet is markedly higher in fruit than that of the Virunga population, and that the Bwindi gorillas, even silverbacks, are more likely to climb trees to feed on foliage, fruits, and epiphytes. In some months, Bwindi gorilla diet is very similar to that of Bwindi chimpanzees. It was also found that Bwindi gorillas travel further per day than Virunga gorillas, particularly on days when feeding primarily on fruit than when they are feeding on fibrous foods. Additionally, Bwindi gorillas are much more likely to build their nests in trees, nearly always in alchornea floribunda (locally, “Echizogwa”), a small understory tree.

Mountain gorillas are an endangered species, with an estimated total population of about 650 individuals. There are no mountain gorillas in captivity. In the 1960s and 1970s, mountain gorillas were captured in order to begin a population of them in captive facilities. No baby gorillas survived in captivity, and no mountain gorillas are known of that are currently in captivity.

All About Bwindi Gorillas

What You Need to Know About Mountain Gorillas

After the discovery of mountain gorillas over two decades by Europeans, it prompted the government of Belgian government to create the Albertine National Park in 1925 which is now the Virunga National Park . The population of gorillas in this park was stable until 1960 when a census was undertaken by George Schaller indicated that about 450 individuals in the range and by 1971, the population of mountain gorillas had fallen to an estimate of 250. Eco-tourism has been encouraged as a way to conserve mountain gorillas however, despite the success of Eco-tourism there are still various threats to the ongoing survival of mountain gorillas in the wild. The Rwandan conflicts for instance had several repercussions in the virunga national park.

In Bwindi Impenetrable National park which is the best place for gorilla trekking today, it’s population is however more immediately safely guarded than elsewhere. This is largely because Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is not divided by arbitrary political border. This means that the entire population can be protected within one well managed and carefully monitored national park. The habituation of mountain gorillas in Bwindi impenetrable park has also reduced their vulnerability to poachers within the area.

The benefits derived from gorilla tourism in Bwindi do extend much further for the activity. The local people have embraced tourism and are the prime protectors of the forest and its occupants. Today there are less human wildlife conflicts within Bwindi given that the local communities are on board. Local community participation now forms the foundation of conservation in Uganda’s national parks.

On a larger scene, Ugandans respect the gorillas and it is their treasure. Gorilla tourism has also formed the backbone of the development of Uganda’s tourism. Majority of the people who come to the pearl of Africa come to see the mountain gorillas. The Bwindi gorillas also attract tourists who include other visits to the different parts of the country there by generating foreign revenue and creating employment well beyond the immediate vicinity of the mountain gorilla reserves. This results into a symbiotic situation whereby a far greater number of people, nationally and internationally are very much motivated to take an active interest in the protection of the gorillas than would otherwise would be the case.

The Ecology and Taxonomy

Mountain gorillas are one of the largest primates which are widespread residents of the Equatorial African rain-forest with a global population of perhaps 100,000 individuals concentrated mainly in the Congo basin. The conventional taxonomic classification of the mountain gorillas has been very much challenged by the recent advances in the DNA testing and the fresh morphological studies suggests that the western and the Eastern Gorilla population range lies more than 1,000 kilometers a part. It should be noted however that the first study of the mountain gorillas was undertaken in the 1950s by George Schaller, whose pioneering work greatly formed the starting point for the more recent researches by Dian Fossey in the 1960s though the brutal and unsolved murder of Fossey at her research center in the of 1985 has been generally thought as one of the great work.

Discrepancy of the mountain gorillas

Mountain gorillas are distinguished from lowland counterparts by several adaptations concerning its altitude home. A female mountain gorilla reaches sexual maturity at the age of eight (8) and after which she will then often move between different troops several times. Once a female has successfully given birth to young ones, she will normally stay loyal to that male which is the silverback until he dies. The females do have a gestation period which is similar to humans and when she reaches the old age, she will have raised up to six off springs to sexual maturity.

Feeding of the endangered mountain gorillas

These great apes are primarily vegetarian and their main diet is composed of bamboo shoots being the favored diet. They are also known to eat about 58 different species of plants and several insects with ants being their popular protein supplement. Being sedentary creatures, they typically move less than 1 kilometer in a day which tracking them on a day to day basis relatively easy more so if you are an experienced guide.
