Rich in history and culture, and surrounded by majestic mountains and nature reserves, it offers must-try experiences whatever your interests or age.

Sip on barrel-aged vinegar

These can all be tasted in the charming vinaigrier (just like a wine cellar, lined with oak barrels). South Africa’s second oldest town after Cape Town was founded in 1679 and named for Governor Simon van der Stel. The town rapidly grew and became an important center for trade and agriculture. Here are some of our favourite museums in Stellenbosch:

Rupert museum.

Rupert Museum

The Rupert Museum houses the late Dr. Anton Rupert’s and his wife Huberte Rupert’s private art collection, which began in the 1940s. Anton Rupert, a South African businessman, philanthropist, and conservationist, and his wife, Huberte, were prominent figures in support of the visual arts, as well as education, music, and the preservation of historical buildings. The museum was inspired by a fire at the Ruperts’ home, after which Huberte Rupert decided to create an art museum that would provide an intimate experience of their extensive art collection. It reflects Dr. and Mrs. Rupert’s discerning eye and personal taste, displaying a selection of what is considered a premier collection of Modern South African art.

The Perfect One Day Itinerary For Cape Town’s Wine Region – Stellenbosch

Johnny

  • Last Updated On: September 7, 2023

The wine region of the Western Cape is in my opinion, the most underrated wine region of the world. It’s not undiscovered by any means, but it is lost in the shadows of places like France, Italy, Mendoza, and Napa Valley. I can safely say that Cape Town’s wine region is more stunning than all of the aforementioned, not to mention a hell of a lot cheaper with wine tastings that average R50. For those visiting South Africa , a visit to the wine region is an absolute must. I’ve visited many more wine farms than what I will list below so make sure to read about all of the wine farms I’ve visited in Cape Town.

Delaire Graff

While I’d  highly recommend a few nights stay in the fabulous wine country, not everyone has the time so I’ve come up with the ultimate one to two day wine tour for those looking to do day trips from Cape Town . Although I’d like to think I’m a sommelier at heart, I am mostly just an amateur that likes to drink wine. Almost all the wine I’ve had during my time in South Africa is great, I’m just focused on which wineries (they’re called wine farms in South Africa), are the most stunning and picturesque.

Getting from Cape Town to the Wine Country

The wine region is 30 minutes-1 hour away from Cape Town . The closest wine region is Constantia which is a mere 20 minutes from the main parts of the city. Stellenbosch is a bit further away with Franschhoek being further out. Back in the days, driving or hiring a cab driver for the day were likely the only options for those that wanted to see the wine region. Although I’ve driven myself numerous times around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek after a few tastings, I wouldn’t recommend the average visitor to mirror what I do 🙂

Thankfully, modern technology has introduced Uber to wine enthusiasts. Nowadays, there’s no reason to drive yourself anymore when there are Ubers readily available all over Cape Town and the wine regions. An Uber from Cape Town to Stellenbosch city is R300-400 which split between two or three people is worth not having to deal with South African police. Ubers are readily available for pickups in between wine farms. It should be easy to have a solid day on under R1,000 for transportation.

Of course, some cab drivers will negotiate and you may be able to hire a driver for the entire day for around that same price.

One Day Itinerary from Cape Town to Stellenbosch

Everyone is different when it comes to what they enjoy and how they like to enjoy a wine tasting. My itinerary might be bit rushed for some, and too slow for others. Nevertheless, there are SO many beautiful wine farms to choose from and this is just one of thousands of combinations you can make. I’m not here to lecture on wine, but merely offer an itinerary for the average person to enjoy the wine country as I would. This is also great if you’re looking to honeymoon in South Africa and can only visit the wine region for a day.

8:00am – Leave Cape Town

Leave early from Cape Town. The Wine regions open around 9am so you’ll want to leave by 8:30am to get a full day in. It takes roughly 30 minutes to get from downtown Cape Town to the first place.

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

9:00am-10:00am: Vergelegen

Start your day with one of the oldest and most beautiful wine farms in South Africa. Vergelegen is amongst South Africa’s top wine producers. Located in Somerset West, this wine farm offers world-class wines at the modern tasting center, and informal diving at the Stebles bistro, and fine dining at The Camphors signature restaurant.

vergelegen

10:00am – 11:00am: Morgenster

Located next door to Vergelegen, Morgenster is famous for its wine as well as olive oil production. If you’re a big fan of olives, olive oil, and olive oil & bread, this is the perfect place. They offer wine tastings with olive oil pairings, which can perfectly together. The views from the front porch where you have your tastings is absolutely breathtaking as well. Make sure to try the truffle olive oil!

Morgenster wine farm views

11:30-1:30pm: Waterkloof Wine Estate

Staying within Somerset West, the next stop is Waterkloof Wine Estate. This is one of the most picturesque and stunning wine farms I’ve ever been to. The wine farm is perched at the top of a hill with panoramic views of False Bay from its modern, yet classy interior. Have lunch here at their award winning restaurant offering some of the best South African fare in the area.

Restaurant at the Waterkloof

2:00pm-3:00pm – Tokara Wine Estate

From Waterkloof, take another Uber further into the mountains of Stellenbosch to Tokara wine estate on the Helshoogte pass. The wine at Tokara is consistent winners of numerous wine awards and the best part? The tastings are 100% free. The views are also quite incredible as well.

Tokara Wine

3:30pm-5:00pm: Delaire Graff Wine Estate

Saving the most stunning for last, Delaire Graff wine estate is in my opinion the most stunning of the many wine farms I visited in South Africa, and in the world. The views of the mountains and vines from their massive estate is nothing short of breath-taking. Their wine is some of the best I’ve had, and their restaurants are consistently rated as some of the best in South Africa. They also have a luxury hotel here (for those that can afford it), as well as a diamond store. If you need to impress someone other than yourself, this is the best place to do it in my opinion.

Delaire Graff

5:30pm: Return to Cape Town

Delaire Graff stays open later than most of the wine farms in the area. Nevertheless, 6pm is likely the latest the tasting rooms will be open so now will be the time to return to Cape Town fully knowing you need to come back asap (Perhaps the next day). When you’re back in Cape Town, finish the day with a hike up Lions Head . Enjoy one of Africa’s best views and sunsets with a bottle from your favorite wine farm of the day. Doesn’t get much better than this.

Lions Head hike sunset

Where to Stay in Stellenbosch for one night

The only thing better than a day in South Africa’s wine country is two days. For those that can swing it (and I still highly recommend it), is to spend one day in Stellenbosch, stay in Stellenbosch for the evening, and then make your way to Franschhoek the next day. There are countless places to stay in the Stellenbosch area from guesthouses in Stellenbosch town to the numerous wine farms that also have lodging.

If you’d like to treat yourselves, I’d highly recommend a one night stay at the Clouds Estate , which is conveniently located to Delaire Graff, the last wine farm on the itinerary from above. It’s hands down my favorite and most memorable stay in Stellenbosch. While I stayed here for a few nights (which I can also recommend), one night is better than nothing. Prices generally range from R2,000 to R3,500 depending on the time of year and rates all include an amazing breakfast overlooking the mountains. The wine here is also fantastic so it makes for a great place to start your day of wine tasting!

Clouds Estate Views

Other options I can recommend are also near the Helsghoote Pass which I find to have the most stunning views of the region. Molenvliet and Banhoek lodge are also fantastic options in the heart of this area with spectacular views.

Molenvliet at sunset

De Zeven Wine Estate

De Zeven is also one of my favorites. The views of the surrounding mountains from this property is nothing short of stunning. Read my review of that wine farm here.

Hi there – do you have a similar guide for how you’d spend day 2 in Franschhoek? I love this 1 day trip and would think we would spend the night!

Hi Allison, glad you like the post! I don’t have anything for franschhoek but I might write something up now! The franschhoek train routes are quite fun!

Sadly, Tokara wine tasting is not free anymore. I’ve been there a few weeks ago and they offered tasting sets from R65 to R150 if I am not mistaken.

Yes you’re right! I noticed this too when I visited recently. Still a great place to visit however!

Hi Johnny. Is July a good time to do a wine tasting tour in Stellenbosch? Many thanks!

Hi Tony, July is winter in sa and although you won’t see the lush green of the vines, it is still stunning regardless. Just make sure you choose a nice weather day to do it!

We like your one day wine tour itinerary except we would like to have lunch at Delaire Graff – we would like to do this on Sa turday/16March – it will be for 2 adults(my wife and I)……Will you be available a nd how much is your total fee for the whole day?

Hi Keith, I am not a travel agent or tour guide. Maybe some day! Enjoy your lunch!

We are looking at following your itinerary for the wine tour. A quick few questions!

Do you need to book in advance at any of these places?

Is it possible to get a tram or do you suggest just getting an uber?

Is it possible to hire bikes when you get there or is it too far?

Is 4 the maximum number of places you suggest to fit into a day?

Are there any dress codes?!

Hi Rachel! Nope you don’t need to book any tastings unlike places like Napa Valley. For lunch it may be a good idea to book ahead of time during high season months.

There is a tram in franshooek thay is a lot of fun and that id recommend. Otherwise just uber from place to place.

Never hired bikes before and have not seen bikers much. Wine farms are too far from each other.

I would say 5 max 🙂

No dress codes in any places I’ve been to at all.

Hi! Im planning to follow your itinerary in stellenbosch. Do you suggest having lunch in waterkloof, tokara or delaire graff estate, also for dinner before checking in at clouds estate?

Hi Jan, I would say if you’re staying at Clouds Estate, I would do lunch at either Waterkloof or Jordan wine estate. Delaire and Tokara are right next to Clouds so I think it’d be more interesting to explore another area before heading to Clouds Estate. I recently planned my friends honeymoon in South Africa , and this is the exactly what they did. Enjoy!

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

South Africa is one of my top five favorite countries — but it’s easily my #1 favorite wine country in the world. The wines here are extraordinary, shockingly affordable, and they have tastes that I don’t experience in any other country.

I don’t know what it is about South African wines. I’m more of a red wine fan in general, and love me some Pinotage, but South Africa’s whites are magical — they have warm, vanilla-y notes that enthrall me. No other whites are like that.

If you want to go wine tasting in South Africa, many people spend a day in Constantia or one of the suburbs immediately outside Cape Town. But if you want to do South African wine country right, spend a few days in Stellenbosch.

Introducing Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch is a university town about an hour outside Cape Town. It’s one of the oldest towns in South Africa and it’s populated primarily by Afrikaners (Afrikaans-speaking people of Dutch descent). And it is world renowned for its wines!

Stellenbosch has a population of roughly 100,000, which makes it a great size for wandering. The downtown area is home to several top-notch hotels, restaurants, cafes, and shops. And because of the university, it has a laid-back, youthful atmosphere.

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

The #1 Reason Why You Should Spend a Few Days in Stellenbosch

Because South Africa is an exhausting destination and you’ll need a break.

Don’t get me wrong — I adore this country fiercely and whole-heartedly. But South Africa takes a lot out of you. You need to be much more cautious about safety, and not only in the cities ( see my South Africa safety guide here ). Going on safari is awesome, but game drives require pre-dawn wakeup calls and you may be out in the harsh sun or freezing cold for hours, often both on the same day. And if you’re diving into culture, much of South Africa’s recent history is painful and heavy, especially if you visit lots of Apartheid-centric sights.

In short, give yourself downtime.

One of the biggest mistakes I see travelers make is not leaving any time for downtime. Travel is exhausting under normal circumstances, and trying to see literally everything is a good way to run yourself ragged. So plan some low-key days into your itinerary no matter where you go, whether it’s a day chilling out at a beach club in Sicily or a day cafe-hopping and photo-taking in Paris .

For our two-week trip, my friend Beth and I started with a few days in Johannesburg. Next was a few days on safari in Kruger National Park. We then hit up Cape Town for a few days. Stellenbosch would be the final destination.

And that itinerary was perfect . By the time we arrived in Stellenbosch, we were ready to veg out and relax.

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

Day One: Stellenbosch’s Best Wineries

We lucked out on our first day — my friend Charmain, who is married to my college friend Mark, offered to drive us from Cape Town to Stellenbosch, visiting three of her favorite wineries. Charmain is from Pretoria but she’s lived in Cape Town for a long time and I found that many locals agreed that she took us to the best places!

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

Fairview Wine and Cheese — Come here for the cheese.

When you arrive at Fairview Wine and Cheese , you’ll see a few goats hanging out by the entrance. Yes, they make their own goat cheese here! And lots of other kinds of cheeses.

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

The three of us sampled several wines and cheeses. And while the wines were good, the cheeses were exemplary . We bought a few to take home as well. If you are a cheese fan in the least, you need to come here!

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

Spice Route — Come here for the food.

Spice Route is a collection of eateries and restaurants near Paarl, just outside Stellenbosch. Theres a section for cured meats, there’s a deli, there’s a pizza place, and there’s even a brewery called Barley and Bilton that serves beer and biltong (South African jerky). And of course, they have wine tasting as well!

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

We tasted four wines with some cured meats. You know I enjoyed that pairing! After, Charmain took us for some South African-style pancakes, rolled thin like crepes.

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

Waterford — Come here for the chocolate.

Waterford is the winery I heard recommended most often from locals in Stellenbosch. It’s got a luxurious atmosphere and feels like a grand manor belonging to some member of royalty. Their wines aren’t half bad, either.

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

At Waterford we took part in their chocolate tasting! We each received three wines to pair with three little squares of chocolate. It was a stormy day and it felt amazing to curl up by the fireplace.

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

Day Two: Vine Hopper and Four Wineries

For our second day, Beth and I decided to try the Vinehopper — a hop-on, hop-off van visiting several wineries. They take several routes depending on the day, so you can take three different routes three days in a row if you’d like.

I found this to be the best way for people without a car (or people who all want to drink) to sample lots of places in Stellenbosch. What you lose in spontaneity you gain in convenience.

We took the Southern Route. Here are the wineries we visited:

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

Neethlingshof

Neethlingshof had a modern atmosphere with a fancy dining room for sampling. We tried several reds and whites and I bought a bottle of The Owl Post to take home.

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

Spier was next, and while we didn’t do a full tasting, we sampled their sparkling rosé and a cheese plate. I also bought a bottle of their chenin blanc to take home (and it’s the only bottle I have left after nine months!). Spier has beautiful grounds as well, so it’s a good spot to take some outdoor photos.

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

Bilton Wines

Like Waterford, Bilton Wines is famous for their wine and chocolate tasting! But the pieces we got here were much larger than the ones at Waterford. Each one was roughly the size of a Kit-Kat strip. They also have award-winning merlot that pairs well with the cardamom chocolate.

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

Kleine Zalze

Well, let’s be honest — by the time you hit the fourth winery in a day, your memories start getting fuzzy. I did enjoy Kleine Zalze , though, and I bought one of their bottles of red to take home.

Vinehopper has three different routes. A one-day pass costs 300 rand ($22) and a two-day pass costs 540 rand ($40). Wine tastings are not included in the price, but they generally cost 15-45 rand ($1-3) for around six tastes at each winery. Note that the wineries close at 5:00 PM, so you’re best off getting an early start.

Day Three: Day Trip to Franschoek

Franschoek is like a mini version of Stellenbosch with a French flair, about 45 minutes away by car. It’s a much smaller town filled with galleries, jewelry shops, and cafes.

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

We started with some wine by the fireplace at a restaurant called Dutch East. I’m pretty sure we were the youngest people there by 30 years.

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

Our one tasting of the day was at Franschoek Cellar , where we paired six elegant wines with six delicious cheeses. (Note: on the map it looks technically within walking distance from the town, and it was, but we were the only people actually walking on that road!)

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

When we were planning our trip, Beth and I discussed whether to stay in Franschoek or Stellenbosch. Overall, we were happy with our decision to stay in Stellenbosch. We would have been bored out of our minds after two days in Franschoek. If we had stayed longer, I’m sure we would have done their wine tram .

We took an Uber from Stellenbosch to Franschoek but couldn’t summon any in the area on the way back, so we had a restaurant call us a cab. The Uber cost us 258 rand ($19) and took 45 minutes; our cab on the way back cost 300 rand ($22).

Day Four: Unusual Stellenbosch Wineries

Our flight departed Cape Town late in the afternoon, so we were determined to get a few more tastings in before we left. Beth found a driver who would take us to a few wineries and then to the airport from there. It was the perfect way to enjoy our final day in Stellenbosch.

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

Fleur du Cap — Come here for their salt tasting.

As soon as I heard that there was a wine tasting paired with salts, I knew I had to try it! Fleur du Cap offers a tasting where they give you five wines, five salts, and several little dishes for experimenting with the salts. One was a stuffed grape leaf; another was olive paste.

It was so much fun! This tasting is why I now use pink Himalayan sea salt all the time in my cooking. (It sounds more expensive than it is — you can get it for like $4 at Trader Joe’s.) Beth and I were also both horrified by Indian black salt, which smells like rotten eggs. Apparently vegans like it because it’s an animal-free way to get the taste of eggs. But isn’t the taste of eggs the worst part about them? It’s all about the texture, baby!

Salt tastings take place at 12:00 PM only and you must book in advance.

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

Cavalli Wine and Stud Farm — Come here for the photo ops.

Cavalli Wine and Stud Farm was easily the most scenic winery we visited. The grounds were so beautiful and the building itself was a modern masterpiece. All of their wines are named after horses. We sampled a few wines and a cheese plate and they actually gave us a free bottle of wine to take home because they were busy and took so long.

And with that, we were off to Cape Town to catch our flight to Johannesburg, then to Amsterdam, then home to New York.

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

But which wineries were the very best?

If you’re limited on time, I would prioritize visiting the very best of Stellenbosch. That would be cheese tasting at Fairview, chocolate tasting at Waterford, and salt tasting at Fleur du Cap.

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

Where to Stay in Stellenbosch

My recommendation is to stay in a hotel within or just outside the city center. That way you can get around easily by walking. Here are my recommendations for places at every price range in downtown Stellenbosch:

If you’re looking for budget accommodation in Stellenbosch, Ikhaya Stellenbosch Backpackers has dorms, private rooms, and apartment-style suites for a low price and a great location right by the center of town.

If you want a mid-range hotel, Stellenbosch Hotel  has the feel of a B&B with the amenities of a hotel, right in the center of town.

If you want something high-end but not too  expensive, check out  Coopmanhuijs Boutique Hotel , a stylish Stellenbosch boutique hotel with a pool in the center of town.

And if you want to blow your budget, you probably don’t care about being in town because you can afford to hire a driver for your whole trip. If that’s the case, go for Delaire Graff Lodge — it’s pretty much the most luxurious property in the Stellenbosch area.

You can find more Stellenbosch hotels here.

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

Where to Eat in Stellenbosch

Many of the wineries serve food, but if you’re looking for restaurants in Stellenbosch, here are some that we enjoyed:

The Big Easy  is an excellent yet affordable high-end dinner spot.  I loved my venison, but the standout was Beth’s parmesan and mushroom risotto.

Hudson’s The Burger Joint  is a popular upscale burger chain.  And it has a bit of a New York theme, which didn’t hurt. Get one of the burgers with bacon jam! (Thanks for taking us, Kate and Alessio!)

Melissa’s the Food Shop is an adorable cafe and grocery store. It’s only open for breakfast and lunch, and they have adorable pastries. This is also a good place to stock up on food souvenirs.

The Bird Cage is a quirky café that does lovely breakfast dishes.  Their main business is wedding cakes. This is one restaurant that will look great on Instagram, FYI.

Tiger’s Milk is a delicious casual chain with great pizzas. I didn’t eat here, but I ate at the one in Muizenberg in Cape Town. Bacon-avocado-feta is a mysteriously popular combination in South Africa and I highly recommend their bacon-avocado-feta pizza! (Thanks for taking us, Mark and Charmain!)

And don’t underestimate having a meal of wine and cheese back at your place!

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

How to Get Around Stellenbosch

The conundrum about wine regions around the world is that they are best to explore by car — yet driving is the last thing you should be doing while wine tasting.

You may want to rent a car and have one person stay sober. But if you both want to drink, look into hiring transportation!

You can summon Ubers within the town of Stellenbosch, but summoning them at outside wineries and in Franschoek is difficult to impossible. In that case, ask the winery to call you a cab.

I loved the day we spent on the Vine Hopper and it was a great way to experience lots of wineries without worrying about transportation. And hiring a driver from a tour company was the most logistically easy way to visit a few wineries, leave our bags with him, and go directly to the airport from there.

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

When to Visit Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch is a great year-round destination. Beth and I visited in the winter (July) and while I was a bit nervous, as winter weather is roughest on the Western Cape, winter ended up being a great time to visit.

The main reason? Fireplaces . It seemed like nearly every winery had a fireplace or two, and it was so nice to bundle up near a roaring fire with a glass of Chenin Blanc in your hand!

Secondly, hardly anyone was visiting then. We were often the only two people visiting a winery. And because of that, hotel prices were lower, too.

Weather-wise, some days were sunny, some were rainy, and some were a mix, but a light leather or denim jacket with a scarf was all we needed. Pack an umbrella because the weather can change quickly.

You can’t go wrong any time of year, though. Fall is a popular time to visit, as that’s when the new bottles will be coming out, and summer is high season. Do be prepared for higher prices and bigger crowds in those seasons.

travel from cape town to stellenbosch

On Tourism and Race in Stellenbosch

One thing I noticed was that nearly every single tourist I saw in Stellenbosch was white. The only black people I saw were working. I noticed this often throughout South Africa, but it was more significant in Stellenbosch than anywhere else.

However, that changed at our final winery, Cavalli, where nearly every guest was black. (It’s worth noting that we were at Cavalli was on a Saturday, which is a popular day for Capetonians to visit rather than tourists.)

Racism in the wine tourism industry is not unheard of — a few years ago, a group of black women were kicked off a wine train in Napa Valley for apparently laughing and talking too loudly (aka #LaughingWhileBlack); they were met by police when they arrived at the station. The company claimed it was “acute insensitivity” and not racial bias at play; the women sued the company and reached a private settlement.

I’m not knowledgeable enough about race relations in South Africa to speak at length, but I will say this: Most non-South Africans assume that things immediately got better when Apartheid ended. That’s not true. Laws may have changed, but new injustices sprang up to replace the old laws. It’s similar to the United States — a lot of people assume things got better once the Civil Rights Movement happened, but the injustice only changed form. Now it’s in the form of criminal injustice and police brutality, among many other things.

What I do recommend is having conversations with South Africans about their lives. Talk to black people, white people, colored people (colored means mixed race and is a non-derogatory term in South Africa), Asian people. Don’t insist that everyone tell you about Apartheid , because it’s nobody’s job to educate you on their painful time in history, but you’d be surprised at how often South Africans bring up Apartheid on their own. Either way, I guarantee your eyes will be opened once you hear their life stories.

After seeing how white the wine tourism industry is in Stellenbosch, I wish I had made an effort to visit black-owned wineries. You should do the same. Here’s  a list of black-owned wineries  in South Africa; here’s a Guardian feature on black-owned wineries  in South Africa.

The Takeaway

Stellenbosch was one of the highlights of our trip. Both Beth and I loved our time there and our three and a half days of drinking wine and eating cheese was the perfect way to wind down after ten busy days in South Africa.

Would I return? You absolutely bet I would! I only scraped the surface when it comes to wineries!

Oh, and one last tidbit:

I brought six bottles of my favorite wines home. I didn’t pay more than $11 for any of them.

Essential Info:  To get into Stellenbosch, you can take a cab, bus, or train from Cape Town. There are also several private shuttle services. If we hadn’t had Charmain to drive us, we would have taken a private shuttle. Locals I spoke to recommended avoiding the train. You can find hotels in Stellenbosch here. I recently read Trevor Noah’s book Born a Crime , which is about his childhood during and after Apartheid in South Africa. It’s an outstanding, gripping, fascinating book and I urge you to read it before you visit South Africa. I actually recommend getting the audio version because Trevor does tons of different accents, languages, and voices. South African power adapters are hard to find outside South Africa — get one before your trip . Don’t visit South Africa without travel insurance. Whether you get appendicitis while on safari and need to be hospitalized, or your phone gets stolen in Cape Town, or an injury means you need to cancel all or part of your trip, travel insurance will help you out. I use and recommend World Nomads as travel insurance for trips to South Africa.

Why you should go to South Africa’s Stellenbosch

South Africa has heaps of amazing destinations – but there’s nothing quite like Stellenbosch. Here’s why you should consider it for your next holiday!

Stellenbosch, South Africa

Another course arrives in front of me. Another paired wine appears in a glass next to it. Lunch, here at the ‘Cellar in the Sky’, captures what is so enjoyable about a visit to the Stellenbosch region of South Africa.

It’s known around here as the ‘Cellar in the Sky’, but technically it’s the restaurant of the Waterkloof Wine Estate. A modern building on the crest of a hill, it has large glass windows that offer views across the countryside and down to the dramatic coastline.

The bright and fresh environment of the restaurant matches the weather and landscapes almost as well as the wine matches the food.

And, ultimately, it is the food and wine that defines the establishment – and the Waterkloof wines and restaurant have consistently picked up awards all across the country.

The dishes being served to me as part of a degustation menu have been prepared by French chef, Gregory Czarnecki.

There are obviously French influences but the food is very contemporary and full of local ingredients. I ask him about how he developed the menu.

“It’s all about transparency,” Gregory tells me, referring to the food but pointing to the glass walls of the building as he says it.

“What I was asked to do when I came to the restaurant was to do something that matches the wines, which are elegant. So the food needs to be elegant. I think it goes well with the whole building and the philosophy behind the wines.”

Gregory has been here for a few years after meeting a South African woman. He’s seen a change in Stellenbosch tourism even in that short time.

“You have more and more Europeans coming – and from around the world, actually – to enjoy what South Africa has to offer, which before the World Cup was just a great destination but I think it opened up a lot of people’s eyes.”

“The food scene has changed according to the people who are coming. There are a lot of restaurants that have upgraded their game and some are still with a South African flavour.

So what is it about Cellar of the Sky that sums up Stellenbosch so well? I guess, for me, it has all the ingredients – fine dining, wineries, friendliness, nature and an attention to the needs of tourists.

And this combination is what makes this one of my most enjoyable trips this year.

Oh, and did I mention how affordable it is? The six course degustation menu with matching wines for each course is 900 rand – which is about US$60. I am constantly amazed at the value for money here.

Where is Stellenbosch?

Stellenbosch is about an hour’s drive from Cape Town but (for better or worse) feels like you’re a world away.

While I love Cape Town’s vibrancy and energy, it can also be a challenging and chaotic city. Stellenbosch, on the other hand, couldn’t be more relaxed.

Nestled in the countryside, it has a provincial European feel – not surprising, considering its history as a Dutch colony.

I know some people think South Africa is a dangerous country – I can tell you I felt safer in Stellenbosch than in many cities in Europe that I’ve been to.

This region is to South Africa what Napa is to California, or the Barossa to Australia. It’s a winemaking area that has turned an agricultural industry into a tourism product. And it’s done it very well.

I feel as though Stellenbosch has an atmosphere of sophisticated casualism. (The free street art exhibition in town when I visit is a good examples of why.)

The atmosphere comes in part from the mix of charming and modern establishments in the main town – but also the opportunities at the wineries around the town, and even the potential trips to explore further afield.

While many tourists to South Africa see Stellenbosch as a day trip from Cape Town, I think that attitude misjudges what’s on offer. A couple of nights in the town, exploring the wineries, opens up a part of the country that you might not automatically think about.

What is there to do in and around Stellenbosch?

Let’s look first at Stellenbosch, the town. It’s the kind of place where you can easily spend an afternoon, meandering through the streets looking at all the little fashion, art and craft shops.

If shopping is not your style, don’t worry, there’ll be something for you here. There are art galleries, museums, and theatres.

For the more active, there are golf courses.

For the really active, there are plenty of good cycling or hiking routes or horse riding tracks.

Personally, though, I just love enjoying the food and drink in the town. From classic high to funky new bars, there’s a bit of everything.

It’s a foodie’s delight here from breakfast to a late night snack. And, of course, everywhere serves the local wines.

Speaking of local wines, visiting the wineries in the region is one of the main reasons many people come here. There is no shortage of places to choose from and you will be spoiled for choice.

Make sure you try some of the local chenin blanc , the South African specialty.

Most of the wineries have created a whole experience for visitors and you’ll be able to taste some wines, have a meal and even (at some) spend half a day doing the activities and relaxing in the grounds.

To help you decide where to visit (assuming I’ve now convinced you to make a trip to Stellenbosch), here are a few of my top recommendations.

Oldenburg Vineyards

Oldenburg Vineyards is a family run winery that makes some of the best wines in the region. The large open tasting room has a gorgeous view out over the vineyards and the mountains.

It’s worth coming for the scenery but it’s really the vintages that will take your breath away.

Lourensford Wine Estate

Lourensford Wine Estate is one of the most scenic wine estates in Stellenbosch and uses the different heights of its property to grow different grapes at their ideal conditions.

I would recommend trying their rose, which is first class. There’s also a market on the property every Saturday and Sunday with lots of local produce for sale.

Jordan Wine Estate

Jordan Wine Estate is a family winery that does its tastings outside, under trees near the beautiful lake. The wines are fantastic and I challenge you to leave without getting a few bottles.

There are also beautiful luxury suites here you can stay in, if you’re looking for accommodation out of town.

Spier Wine Farm

Spier Wine Farm is one of the oldest in the country, dating back to 1692.

It also offers one of the largest selection of things to do and is spread out over a large space with several dining options, a farm to explore, and an area for the kids. Make sure you try the tasting that matches wines with chocolate!

Hartenberg Wine Estate

Hartenberg Wine Estate is a traditional winery that still uses its old cellar (an interesting sight!). It is particularly well known for its shriaz, which is definitely worth tasting.

Meals are served in a wonderful dining room that evokes an old-school atmosphere surrounded by wonderful landscapes.

Now, if all these activities in town and all the surrounding wineries aren’t enough, Stellenbosch is also the perfect base to explore the region.

I would highly recommend a drive to the coastal town of Hermanus or even go a bit further along the road to see some of the Cape’s best nature at the Grootbus Private Nature Reserve .

And, of course, you can’t leave the region without driving along the famous coastal road – one of the most beautiful things you’ll ever see at sunset!

As I said earlier, having the opportunity to spend a week around the Stellenbosch region was one of the highlights of my past year of travel. I never got tired of the incredible scenery that I was constantly surrounded by.

On top of that, the food and wine was top notch (without exception) and the community was so open and friendly.

It’s a great holiday destination for anyone – but I think, particularly for Europeans, it’s a perfect option to escape the Northern Hemisphere winter.

South Africa is the same timezone as London so there’s not jetlag. That also means that most of the flights go overnight so you don’t waste days travelling at either end.

It’s nice and warm in South Africa when it’s freezing in Europe. And the country is pretty cheap – certainly by UK standards, for instance.

The value for money is fantastic and you can have a good time for a fraction of the cost of travelling around Western Europe.

Some savvy tourists have discovered all the merits of Stellenbosch and I know many people return year after year.

Have you experienced it for yourself yet?

For accommodation, I suggest the beautiful Bonne Esperance Guesthouse .

Time Travel Turtle was supported by Stellenbosch and its Wine Routes as part of an iambassador campaign but the opinions, over-written descriptions and bad jokes are his own.

It’s a pity it’s so far away, otherwise I too would visit South Africa more often. Stellenbosch is a gorgeous town, with beautiful Dutch/colonial architecture. The wine region of South Africa is a great place to visit. I’ve only been to this region but I would also love to explore the East of South Africa. It’s a beautiful country!

Oh yes, I would love to see more of South Africa as well. Such an interesting country with such a depth of culture. I don’t think Stellenbosch is representative of a lot of the country but it’s a great place for a holiday, nonetheless – especially for the wine! 🙂

This looks fantastic! I’ve bookmarked this for whenever I visit South Africa. No plans to go there at the moment, but you never know 🙂

I hope you get there sometime. The country is fantastic – much better than I expected. And Stellenbosch is a really special place within it.

Awesome photos of Stellenbosch! Great summary of a variety of activities to explore. Thanks for sharing!

Well written and beautiful pictures to accompany the great town and experience you seemed to have had in South Africa. I a South African, from Johannesburg and currently based in Stellenbosch. I am study here and also work part time at a art gallery called Art on Church Gallery. We are a bronze sculpture and fine art gallery situated at 38 Church Street, Stellenbosch, 7600 and our line is +27 21 883 3790/ [email protected] . I also run my educational travel company, WTL CLUB on the side, and currently busy with our website development. I am 25 years old and study International Business and Accounting Studies and I love travelling . Thank you for sharing your experiences with us.

Visiting their traditional winery and seeing the old cellar in action was such a cool experience. It’s like stepping back in time, you know? And let’s talk about their Shiraz—an absolute must-try! The taste is simply out of this world. Thanks for the awesome post. I’m from Cape Town, but still a tourist in my own country!

Hi we will be driving from Green Point to Stellenbosch on a Tuesday morning. We are staying in Stellenbosch itself. Looking at different forums I've noticed a couple of routes that have been suggested as the safest, avoiding the R310. The first is using the N1 & R304 at Joostenberg and the second was continuing on the N2 to Firgrove Rural and then taking the R44. We plan to stop at a wine farm or 2 en route and once we plan the best and safest driving route then I'll plan the wine stops accordingly. Is there any preference between these 2 routes?

Thanks in advance,

The most scenic route, with biggest choice of wine estates, is up the N1, take the Klapmuts exit number 47 onto the R44, entering Stellenbosch from the north. About 20 wine estates on that part of the R44:

I usually take the N2 past the airport and then at Somerset West take the R44 towards Stellenbosch….however, this is because I like to call in at one of my favourite wineries, Ken Forrester!

Thank you both - you’re so helpful on these forums. So basically both these are safe in terms of the junctions?

If so then we can plan our farm visits and take either route depending on where we decide 😊

I would be perfectly happy with both routes, safety wise and have done both routes. In fact I shall be doing the airport to Stellenbosch via R44 and Ken Forrester next month!

In the current political situation, both routes are safe.

Thank you Lisa and Gerald - That's great to know that we can chose either route. Can I also just check on our route from Stellenbosch to Hernamus via Betty's Bay for the penguins. Google maps seems to send me on the R44, N2 & then R43 and backtracking to Hermanus. Is there any reason why we couldn't go the R44 coast road to Betty's Bay and then on to Hermanus from here?

Thanks again - all your replys on ather posts have been invaluable in my planning :)

Following the flooding the R44 between Gordon's Bay and Rooi Els is closed because of landslides. So currently to visit Stoney Point, Betty,s Bay go have to go in and out via Klienmond. The province authorities are providing updates https://www.westerncape.gov.za/tpw/department-of-infrastructure/wc-government-update-road-closures-and-repairs-following-adverse

SJR thank you for this info!

When are you intending to visit? As Sjr says, the R44 is closed at the moment. I just read this week that they don’t think it will be open until mid - late December

Lisa, we head next weekend and will be making our way down to Hermanus the following so it’s really good to know this.

I presume the detour to Betty’s Bay is worth it? We only have 1 night in Hermanus so need to balance our time well.

Cape Town Travel Guide: Where To Stay, Eat Drink And Safari In The South African City

C ape Town is a cultural melting pot, increasingly celebrated for its art, food and fashion, as well as being a natural wonder, home to stunning scenery - mostly associated with the ever-dominating Table Mountain that looks out over the city - incredible land and ocean wildlife, which offer the opportunity to get up close with safari options and beautiful beaches just a stone's throw from the metropolis.

Though it is a 12-hour flight from London, it has just a one-hour time difference meaning that it is far enough away to feel like you're exploring somewhere totally different and yet there is no jet lag to acclimatise to. This makes it an ideal long-haul location , especially if you're wanting to escape when the temperatures drop in the UK and start heating up in Cape Town (the hottest months of the year are January to March). Plus, there's no visa requirements for UK citizens.

All in all, it's very straightforward as far as far-away adventures go. Unlike other long haul trips where you might opt for multi-destination holidays to justify the lengthy travel time, there isn’t the need to do this in Cape Town. It has everything - food, beach, nature, adventure and wine - all within a short radius.

Sold yet? You're not the only one. It’s no surprise that in the aftermath of the pandemic, people have flocked to the African city, with January to June 2023 exceeding pre-pandemic levels by 104%, welcoming 1.4 million international visitors. Most visitors come from the UK, with an estimated 70,000 British tourists opting for Cape Town as their holiday destination in the first four months of 2023 alone.

Here's everything you need to know, from hotels to restaurants to safari in Cape Town:

Hotels in Cape Town

The Silo Hotel

Found in the trendy V&A waterfront area of the city, this former grain factory offers stunning 360° views of Table Mountain to across the water of Robben Island. An ideal city hotel, the rooms have everything you need and its delicious breakfast is first-class, setting you up perfectly for a day of sightseeing and exploring. The rooftop sky terrace is a must-visit for guests. In the winter, enjoy the view while cosying up with a blanket and glass of wine from the bar. In the summer, make use of the pool, which can also be found up there.

As well as boasting its own art collection - you can also have a private guided art tour by their in-house resident expert - the hotel is found on top of the Zeitz Museum Of Contemporary Art Africa, which is home to a stunning collection of art from across South Africa and the continent.

The One & Only

The Cape Town edition of the luxury chain has more of a resort feel (some rooms are accessible via a bridge over the canal where a resident otter lives), which is a great choice for travellers who like to add an element of R&R to their city escape. The rooms are minimalist, but with clear African influences on its design, such as printed curtains, beaded ornaments and natural wood decor.

Outside of the room, you can unwind in the spa, found on its own man-made island, where a pre or post-flight massage is definitely encouraged or visit the resort's wine studio for a private wine tasting session by their own expert sommelier sampling the best wine in the Cape Town region, accompanied by a delicious charcuterie board. For dining, the all-day food and drink site, Vista Bar, sits directly opposite Table Mountain for unparalleled views. The One & Only also boasts a Nobu restaurant, which until recently was the only posting of the famed Japanese eatery on the continent (Chef Nobu and Robert De Niro opened up their second African restaurant in Marrakech in spring 2023). The concierge can help arrange activities with excursions, including whale watching, hikes and even shark dives offered.

Restaurants in Cape Town

Cape Town has really put itself on the map for its dining options in recent years, with a huge variety of restaurants. From modern takes on South African cuisine to full gastronomic experiences, the city has something for everyone. As a pescatarian, there's a huge amount of non-meat options, too. Plus, Ubers are a super reliable, cheap and easy way to navigate the city and fit in as many eateries as possible.

New for 2023 is Salon , the sister restaurant of the world-renowned Pot Luck Club (and found just one floor below), which offers incredible multi-course tasting menus based on all the places across the world where chef Luke Dale-Roberts has worked. Salon's take on the Singapore Chilli, Malaysian Laksa and twist on the traditional South African Malva pudding to finish off our dinner are highlights.

Another must-visit restaurant for a full multi-course and wine-paired culinary experience is the exclusive Salsify at the Roundhouse (recently named Africa's best landmark restaurant by the World Culinary Awards), whose setting overlooks Camps Bay in one direction (which is worth a visit in itself. Head to the beach just before sunset for stunning views of the ocean in this quaint surfer setting) and Lion's Head in the other. Salsify offers a lengthy ten-course chef's menu (we loved the line fish), where for every course one of the kitchen's chefs will bring it to your table and talk you through the dish.

For a lunch or dinner option in one of the cooler parts of the city, try the new spot Club Kloof . The Italian-inspired menu specialises in small plates with Mediterranean influence. We recommend the Mac and Cheese Arancino and Mozarella-Stuffed Pizza Fritta paired with an Aperol Spritz, of course. The brightly-tiled interiors make for a dreamy dining setting, too.

Speaking of interiors, Upper Union is another eatery where the food is elevated by the stylised decor of the building. In the heart of Cape Town’s Kloof Street district, it is an interiors lover's dream thanks to the emerald, black and gold modern twist on the traditional Victorian heritage building. At Upper Union, you can opt for the chef's menu of a big main meal with sides (headed up by chef Amori Burger) or a sharing-style menu. Whichever you choose, pair it with a cocktail from the mixologist's menu of bespoke drinks.

Day trips from Cape Town

There is so much to see and visit in Cape Town. So much so that you probably won't get to do it all. But here are some of the essentials that you should try to tick off if possible.

You will see Table Mountain wherever you go and should definitely try and get up there to view the Mother City from the best view possible. There are cable cars which go to and from Table Mountain and we recommend downloading the app to double check the cable cars are running as they don't if there is poor visibility or difficult weather conditions. If you'd prefer to hike, there are a variety of routes to take, differing in length and ability.

A hugely important trip from Cape Town is to Robben Island, where a ticket includes the ferry over to the island where former president and anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years, along with countless other citizens who were held as political prisoners for their fight against the apartheid. The tour guides on Robben Island are former inmates, making the visit profoundly impactful as they present the squalid conditions where they were forced to sleep, eat and work, often with very limited outside visitation while being held under strict rules and regulations, including being forbidden from speaking to to other inmates. As well as seeing Mandela's cell, you are also shown the areas where he wrote (and hid around the prison) manuscripts for his memoir, Long Walk To Freedom.

Another day trip about an hour's drive away from the CBD (central business district) centre is the Cape of Good Hope, the most south-western point of the African continent. It's also where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic Ocean so be prepared for breathtaking scenery of lush green mountains and crashing waves on the pebbled beaches.

Have a pit stop at Kalk Bay en route to the Cape of Good Hope, for kitsch coffee shops and souvenir spots, as well as sampling the fish and chips on the waterfront before taking a stroll to where seals will be found happily sunbathing.

Another must-visit is Boulders Beach , home to the famous colony of African penguins. Adorable.

Vineyards near Cape Town

There's the option to spend day trips visiting some of the many vineyards in the nearby wine region (some are as close as 30 minutes away) or you can extend your stay with a night or two there. In which case, you will likely end up in the beautiful town of Stellenbosch.

We opted to spend a night at the majestic Lanzerac Estate, a five-star country hotel with traditional décor full of beautiful quirky china antiques. Surrounded by mountains with a grand tree-lined driveway, the estate is home to rows of lush vines. We recommend heading to the deli for a wine tasting session. Try a glass of the rosé pinotage, a cross between the Pinot Noir and Hermitage grape, which originated at Stellenbosch University.

For a gorgeous dining experience in Stellenbosch where, of course, the wine is just as good too (there are 130 bottles on offer), we recommend the appropriately named The Wine Glass restaurant.

Safari near Cape Town

Of course, safari is a must when heading to South Africa. While the more widely known Kruger National Park is located further north nearer Johannesburg and Pretoria, it's incorrect to assume there aren't beautiful safari options nearer Cape Town, too.

Gondwana game reserve is a four and a half hour drive away from Cape Town. It's an easy drive, essentially one straight long road once out of Cape Town (stop off at Tredici bakery in Swellendam en route).

Gondwana is home to the big five: lion, elephant, rhino, hippo and buffalo, as well as herds of zebra, impala, cheetah, giraffe, monkeys and more. Guests are usually taken out for a morning and late afternoon safari. Thanks to the incredibly knowledgeable and passionate safari guides, highlights range from seeing a baby rhino crossing the path with his mother, a herd of giraffes having their morning breakfast and a post-hunt pride of lions chomping on their prey.

Though it is centrally about the wildlife and ensuing unforgettable experiences you make, the experience of Gondwana is heightened by the luxury accommodation. There are a range of options for your stay, from Ulubisi House, the staffed three-bedroom private lodge with a private pool, to the Kwena Lodge suites with a shared pool, sky lights for stargazing, and a range of indoor and outdoor restaurants offering incredible food.

Stellenbosch keen on signing Bafana Bafana and Pirates star!

An Orlando Pirates star is being closely monitored by a rival DStv Premiership club ahead of potential move to them next season.

Zaahid Nanabhay

Stellenbosch FC are reportedly plotting a move for an Orlando Pirates midfielder!

Steve Barker’s side have undoubtedly been this season’s surprise package. The Cape side lifted the Carling Knockout Cup and currently sit in second position on the log standings.

Stellenbosch have successfully qualified for continental football next season. Depending on whether they finish in second position or third, Barker’s side will either feature in the CAF Champions League or CAF Confederation Cup.

Going into Africa will take a massive toll on the club and reports suggest they’re looking at bringing in quality reinforcements.

According to the latest transfer gossip, Steve Barker is keen on signing Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana midfielder Thabang Monare to bolster his midfield!

Since the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in January, Monare is yet to feature for Jose Riveiro’s side. The player’s contract comes to an end in June and further reports suggest no contract extension talks have taken place just yet.

Orlando Pirates midfielder wanted by Stellenbosch?

“Stellies are believed to be monitoring Thabang Monare’s situation at Pirates with keen interest, as they harbour an intention to bring him to the Western Cape next season, possibly to fill the void left by Darrel Matsheke,” a Kick Off report read.

“The Winelands outfit is facing the potential of playing in one of the CAF competitions next season. They are, ironically, in a neck-and-neck race for second spot in the DStv Premiership.”

In other news, Orlando Pirates have reportedly secured the services of talented SuperSport United defender Kegan Johannes for next season.

Despite being just 23 years of age, Johannes already has over 70 top-flight appearances to his name. The speedy fullback made a name for himself at Ajax Cape Town (now Cape Town Spurs) before joining SuperSport United in 2021.

According to the latest reports, Jose Riveiro’s side have swooped in to sign the talented defender in a big-money move!

Johannes had recently signed a new contract extension at SuperSport United, meaning Orlando Pirates had to fork out the big bucks for their target.

Bucs reportedly land talented PSL defender

“SuperSport United defender Kegan Johannes is on his way to join Orlando Pirates next season,” a Sportswire report read.

“Pirates are therefore aiming to strengthen their squad for their upcoming CAF club competition campaign next season. They have already secured qualification through their Nedbank Cup final appearance against Mamelodi Sundowns on 1 June at Mbombela Stadium.

“Sportswire has been told the deal is done. Johannes would be joining the club he also scored against in a DStv Premiership match at Orlando Stadium in March 2022.”
