• When eating in a Portuguese restaurant, you will likely be offered bread and accompaniments like cheese and olives when you first sit down. This is not free, so politely decline if not interested.
• Carry cash with you in Portugal. Some smaller restaurants (where you find the best food) may only accept cash or may charge fees for credit card use.
• Portugal has its own genre of music: fado. These dramatic songs of longing are often performed in clubs, restaurants and chapels around the country, particularly in Lisbon.
• July and August can be unbearably hot in Portugal. For plenty of sunshine but tolerable heat, schedule your holiday to Portugal during May, June or September.
• Like in many European countries, the Portuguese enjoy long dinners and tend to eat quite late, often between the hours of 8pm and 10pm.

Portugal is a Roman Catholic country that has been influenced by many cultures over the years. The Portuguese hold onto traditional family values and are renowned for their appreciation of food and the arts, with three Portuguese cities – Lisbon, Porto and Guimaraes – having been designated   European  Capitals of Culture.

Walk the streets of a Portuguese city and you’ll be greeted by color and chatter. The locals love nothing more than having a chat with each other, or with tourists, be it about the weather or politics or football. More often than not, these conversations take place during one of the day’s endless number of coffee breaks, or around the lunch or dinner table. Debates are encouraged, particularly with a glass of port in hand.

Pop into a bar in Lisbon and you may be greeted by the mournful sound of ‘fado’, a Portuguese style of music that’s listed as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. The lyrics often relate back to the sea and a sense of nostalgia, homesickness and longing, and it holds such a special place in Portugal’s heart that when Amalia Rodrigues, the so-called ‘Queen of Fado’, died in 1999, three days of national mourning were declared.

This love of the arts isn’t limited to music either; Lisbon is jammed full of art galleries and even the pavements, all over the country, are patterned and decorated in a mosaic style. It’s just one example of the Portugal’s love of beauty, whether that beauty is found in art, food or each other.

History and government

The Iberian Peninsula was once made up of various tribes including the Celts, Aquitani, Iberians and Turdetani. Trade had been established across the Mediterranean by the   Greeks  and Phoenicians, though the Romans came to control the entire peninsula. As the Roman Empire began to weaken, the peninsula was invaded by various barbarian tribes and the Visigoths came out victorious. They controlled the entire Iberian Peninsula and converted to Catholicism.

The Moors and Reconquista

Meanwhile, Islamic forces had been slowly sweeping from the   Middle East   to Northern Africa and in AD711 the Moors crossed the Gibraltar Strait and defeated the Visigoths. They pushed north and conquered nearly all of the peninsula, though the Christian kingdom of Asturias held strong in the northwest thanks to the protection of the surrounding mountains. The Iberian Peninsula was known as Al-Andalus and became a centre for science and progress, though infighting eventually led to the area being split into a number of independent Muslim states.

In the 11th century, Christian soldiers from across   Europe  answered the call to fight the ‘infidels’ during a period known as the Reconquista. The Moors were pushed south and, in 1139, Afonso Henriques declared himself the King of Portugal after defeating the Moors in the south. The Algarve was conquered in the late 13th century and Portugal’s borders were defined.

Global expansion

After securing their borders, the Portuguese turned their attention abroad. Nearby   Morocco  was the first target and Portugal’s victory spurred the country into global exploration.   Africa , Southern India and   Brazil   followed, as well as trading posts in Timor,   China   and more. Their plan was simple: despite having a relatively tiny population, they would build their empire through trade.

This, of course, was unsustainable for such a small nation and they eventually found themselves in and out of Spanish rule towards the end of the 17th century. A period of peace and prosperity ensued until a giant earthquake hit Lisbon in 1755, leveling the city and causing tens of thousands of deaths. The Prime Minister at the time, Marques de Pombal, famously promised to ‘bury the dead and heal the living,’ and somehow did just that.

19–20th centuries

After Brazil’s independence was recognized in 1825 the Portuguese focused in on the domestic front. Education improved, as did women’s rights, and slavery was ended across the Portuguese colonies. Still, discontent was spreading as inequality rose and the monarchy was seen as a cause of this: the king, Carlos, was assassinated and his son was exiled to the UK – an unstable republic was born.

Over the following 16 years there were 45 changes of government. Coup after coup after coup took place, with Portugal supporting the Allies in WWI and remaining neutral in WWII. The post-war years saw yet another coup in Lisbon, known as the Revolution of the Carnations, led by military personnel sympathetic to the colonies, and the decolonization of territories swiftly followed. Countries like East Timor and Angola were plunged into chaos and by the late 1970s, Portugal was equally, if not more, unstable.

It’s been a long slog for Portugal and the economy is by no means safe. The country was in a serious recession for years, but the past five years have seen unemployment drop and wages rise. There’s been a heavy investment in green energy too. And though tourist numbers continue to swell and boost the economy, the cities are facing similar problems to a lot of European hotspots: rising rents and cost of living, thanks to tourism, are forcing locals out of the city centres. But for now, Portugal is going from strength to strength and looking positively towards the future.

Geography and environment

Portugal is located on the western side of the Iberian Peninsula. It shares an extensive land border with   Spain   to the east and north, while the west and south of the country are hugged by the Atlantic Ocean. The country’s geography varies from north to south and is a nice mix of plains, woodlands, mountains and beaches.

The extensive coastline is known for its dramatic cliffs and sandy beaches, with the south of Portugal, an area known as the Algarve, being particularly popular with tourists. The northern coast is equally beautiful but more influenced by the Atlantic and experiences more rain and wild weather, particularly during the winter.

To the west of Portugal is the island archipelago known as the Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal. These islands have been visited by sailors for centuries and are renowned for their dramatic beauty. The volcanic peaks, lush landscapes and colourful fishing villages host some 250,000 residents across nine islands. The Azores has a subtropical oceanic climate, which is warm in summer but by no means a ‘tropical paradise’. The Atlantic makes the temperature much more mild than the islands of the Mediterranean.

Inland Portugal is defined by the Douro River, which empties through Porto, and the Tagus River, which empties through Lisbon. Portugal’s south features rolling plains with a relatively warm and dry climate, while the north is far more mountainous with a wetter climate. The highest point on mainland Portugal is Torre (1993 m/6539 feet) in the Serra da Estrela range, which is a popular skiing destination in the winter.

Eating and drinking

It’s unsurprising, given Portugal’s location, that seafood plays a massive role in the Portuguese diet. In fact, the national dish of bacalhau (salted cod) can supposedly be cooked in over 365 ways, one for each day of the year. But it’s not just seafood that’s on the menu – the Portuguese have a varied and, quite frankly, mouth-watering range of dishes as well as a world-class wine industry.

Keep an eye out for some of these while traveling through Portugal: 

• Caldeirada This stew, which is packed with several different types of fish, is one of Portugal's most popular and enduring dishes. Expect sardines, cod, haddock, tuna and mackerel, doused in white wine and olive oil, served with a chunk of crusty bread. Simple but effective!
• Pasteis de Nata The Portuguese custard tart has wrapped its delicious ­– and admittedly non-existent – arms around the globe and the world’s tastebuds are cheering. These gooey little goodies feature flaky pastry and custard filling and can be eaten by the dozen (but shouldn’t be, for health reasons).
• Carne de Porco á Alentejana The popular Portuguese version of surf and turf hails from the Alentejo region but can be found served all throughout Portugal. Featuring pork and clams as the hero ingredients, white wine, paprika and coriander add flavor that is difficult to resist.
• Feijoada Brazil's national dish was actually invented by the Portuguese and this stew still endures as a common favorite in Portugal. Featuring beans, pork or beef and vegetables, this hearty stew is typically served with rice, although regional differences make this dish a different proposition every time.
• Entrecosto com Mel Meat lovers will salivate over these succulent pork ribs marinated in honey, garlic and liquor. Served with a side of chili sauce, this oven-roasted feast is perfect for a decadent celebration.
• Francesinha This is Porto’s sandwich to end all sandwiches. Translating as the ‘Little Frenchie’, this dish is anything but. It’s the Portuguese adaptation of the classic   French  toastie and features bread, pork, sausage, bacon and beef, topped with cheese and a fried egg and served with fries on the side. Give it a try ­– you won’t regret it (you almost certainly will).
• Port Portugal’s Douro Valley, upriver from Porto, is the third-oldest wine region in the world and the only one capable of producing port wine. Fortified wines are made all over the world but only wines from the Douro can be labelled as ‘port’. A sweet red wine, usually served for dessert, port has been made in the Douro since the mid-18th century and the landscape is as beautiful as the wine is delicious.

Festivals and events

If you're traveling to Portugal you better pack your party shoes. No matter what time of year you're visiting, you'll see the locals take to the streets for some kind of 'festa'.

Santo Antonio Festival

Sometimes known as the Festival of Sardines, this festival takes place in mid-June though it’s part of a full month of celebrations in Lisbon. Portugal’s capital is filled with people grilling fish in the street and celebrating St Anthony, the patron saint of the city. The streets are filled with revelers, with the party beginning in the afternoon of June 12 and continuing until sunrise – June 13 is a bank holiday.

If you can’t make it to Brazil for Carnaval and happen to be in Europe, Portugal is the place to head for some wild times. Colorful parades and heaving street parties take place all over the country in celebration of the beginning of Lent.

Obidos Medieval Festival

From mid-July to August, Obidos hosts a medieval festival filled with jousting knights, feasts and performances, all in front of the city’s imposing castle. The town recreates medieval Europe with banners and flags strung across the town and soldiers, jugglers, minstrels and more wandering the streets.

Music festivals

Portugal’s summer features a number of hugely popular music festivals that attract superstar acts from across the globe. Some of the biggest are Primavera Sound in Porto, the Portuguese adaptation of the Barcelona-based festival, and Rock in Rio, which is held every two years in Lisbon, as well as NOS Alive.

Portugal offers up the full gamut of shopping experiences from big city malls to dusty little antique stores hidden in the winding backstreets. Shopping not really your thing? That's fine, just eat your way through the country instead.

Remember, it's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

A great keepsake from a trip to Portugal is a bottle of fortified from its spiritual home. Wander down Porto’s steep streets to the harbor and spend some time visiting the port houses lining the water. You can do tastings, enjoy a meal and pick up a bottle from famous houses like Taylor’s and Sandeman’s, or opt for something a little different like Kopke, which is the oldest port house in Porto and has been producing the sweet stuff since 1638.

Azulejos are colorful, decorative tiles that can be found on surfaces all over Portugal. They were used as a form of art as well as to control the temperature in homes. The tiles are classically blue and white, although they are found in other colors, and can be bought brand-new or found in antique stores across the country.

Galo de Barcelos

The Rooster of Barcelos is the unofficial symbol of Portugal. There are various legends surrounding the rooster, but they all come back to a passing pilgrim claiming his innocence and declaring that a cooked rooster on the dinner table would rise and crow at the hour of his hanging. Every souvenir shop in the country will have various gifts relating to the rooster, but it’s worth keeping an eye out in the various markets for a more authentic, locally crafted example.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to visit Portugal?

The months of May, June and September are considered some of the best times to see Portugal as the weather is usually fine (yet not too hot) and the attractions are less crowded than during the peak months of July and August. Autumn and winter are typically rainy and windy, yet sunny days aren't rare either. If you’re after a beach holiday, keep in mind that the water temperature on Portugal’s north coast will be very cool, even during the summer months.

Is it safe to visit Portugal?

Yes, it is safe to visit Portugal. Travelers should exercise normal precautions and keep a close eye on their belongings in crowds and heavily touristed areas.

Do I need a visa to travel to Portugal?

Portugal is a member of the Schengen Convention, which means that if you travel to an EU member country or countries, like Portugal, for a total of less than 90 days, a visa is not required. Citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, the UK and other member countries of the EU and Schengen area are included under this arrangement.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Is tipping customary in Portugal?

Tipping isn’t customary in Portugal except at restaurants. Adding 10 percent to the bill should be fine, or more if the service has been exceptionally good. Rounding up to the nearest euro will be appreciated by bar staff and taxi drivers too, but this is not expected. When staying at a hotel it's also standard to tip the luggage porter one euro per bag.

What is the internet access like in Portugal?

Internet access in Portugal is generally good with widespread wi-fi in both cities and smaller towns. You may wish to purchase a local SIM. The main domestic carriers are Vodafone, TMN and Optimus, but make sure your phone is unlocked before purchasing a prepaid SIM.

Can I use my cell phone while in Portugal?

Travelers should be able to use their cell phones across Portugal. The most economical way to use your phone in Portugal is by purchasing a local prepaid SIM. If you wish to use your own SIM, be sure to activate global roaming before departing your home country and always check with your carrier as to any additional charges that may be incurred.

What are the toilets like in Portugal?

Flushable, Western-style toilets are the norm in Portugal. Please be aware that sometimes a small fee is required to access public toilets, so it’s worth having a small stash of euro coins for when the need arises.

Is Portugal safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Portugal legalized same-sex marriage in 2010 and has passed legislation protecting LGBT-identifying people from discrimination. Most Portuguese are open-minded and unconcerned when it comes to sexuality, particularly in the more touristed areas of Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve, but it’s worth remembering that Portugal is a Catholic country in which homosexuality is still not regarded as being ‘normal’.

As far as scenes go, Lisbon has a more prominent community and the annual highlights are the Lisboa Pride Festival in June and September’s QueerLisboa Film Festival. For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Portugal accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Facilities for people with physical limitations are lacking in Portugal when compared to many other European countries. On top of this, Lisbon and Porto are very hilly, with lots of stairs and cobblestones, and visitors with disabilities may have trouble getting around.

That said, things are improving and newer hotels and restaurants, as well as modern museums, have accessible facilities. The best transportation for those with disabilities is train, with an increasing number of stations having ramps, lifts and disabled bathrooms.

As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What to wear in Portugal

Pack for Portugal as you would for any other coastal European destination. If you’re traveling in the summertime, loose clothing that protects from the sun is best for the daytime, but be sure to cover your shoulders when visiting churches or other religious sites. We traveled with EF Go Ahead tours in March, 2023 on their tour of Portugal which includes Porto, The Algarve, and Lisbon. What follows is a review of that tour.

Porto, Portugal

Our tour started in Porto, also known as Oporto, a vibrant city located in the northwest of Portugal. Porto is the second-largest city in the country, after Lisbon, and is known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and delicious wine. Porto is situated on the Douro River and is home to many iconic landmarks, including the Ribeira district, the historic center of Porto which has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the famous Dom Luís I Bridge, which connects Porto to its neighboring city, Vila Nova de Gaia.

We had two days to explore Porto, its winding streets, beautiful riverfront, and incredible views.

The city is also renowned for its port wine, which is produced in the Douro Valley and stored in the numerous wine cellars that can be found in Vila Nova de Gaia.

The History of Port Wine in Portugal

Port wine, named after the city of Porto, has a long and fascinating history in Portugal, and is one of the country’s most beloved exports. Porto has been a center of port wine production for centuries. The wine is made from grapes grown in the Douro Valley, which are then transported down the river to the port houses in Porto, where they are aged and blended to create the unique and flavorful port wine.

Port wine has been produced in Portugal since the 17th century, and quickly became popular among British wine drinkers, who developed a taste for the wine during the wars with France. Today, port wine is enjoyed all over the world, and is considered one of Portugal’s greatest cultural and gastronomic treasures. We toured Ferreria and tasted some wonderful ports!

Coimbra, Portugal

After two days in Porto we checked out of our first hotel to make the trip to Evora, stopping first at the city and the University of Coimbra.

Coimbra is a charming city located in central Portugal, and is home to one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Europe – the University of Coimbra . The university is a major attraction in the city, with its stunning architecture and rich history dating back to the 13th century. The university’s library, known as the Biblioteca Joanina, is one of the most beautiful libraries in the world, with its ornate baroque design and priceless collection of books and manuscripts. So much so it was used as the model for the library in the Disney movie, Beauty and the Beast.

Outside the university, visitors can explore the narrow cobbled streets of the old town, visit the Sé Velha cathedral, and enjoy the breathtaking views from the top of the city’s hill, where the ancient Moorish castle of Coimbra is located.

We had some free time in Coimbra after our tour and decided to explore the beautiful streets and have some traditional lunch, which in Portugal typically includes some type of fish. In this case, octopus.

From Coimbra we boarded our bus for the trip to Evora, our next hotel stop.

Evora, Portgual

Evora is a beautiful and historic city located in the heart of Portugal’s Alentejo region. The city’s rich history dates back to Roman times, and visitors can explore the impressive Roman Temple of Evora, which is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Evora is known for its stunning architecture, with many of its buildings dating back to the medieval period. The city’s old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its narrow streets, charming squares, and picturesque whitewashed buildings. Visitors can also visit the city’s impressive Gothic cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century and houses some impressive religious art, including the Chapel of Bones.

The Chapel of Bones is one of Evora’s most famous attractions and is a unique and eerie place to visit. The chapel is located in the Church of St. Francis and is decorated with thousands of human bones, including skulls, femurs, and other bones, which are arranged in intricate patterns along the walls and ceiling. The chapel was built in the 16th century by Franciscan monks as a way to remind people of the transience of life and the inevitability of death. Despite its macabre decor, the chapel is a fascinating and thought-provoking place to visit, and offers a unique insight into the history and culture of Evora.

Alentejo Cork Factory in Evora, Portugal

The Alentejo region is famous for its cork production, and a visit to the Alentejo cork factory in Evora was a fascinating way to learn about this industry. We were given a guided tour that explained the entire cork production process, from harvesting the bark of the cork oak trees to the finished product. We were able to see the cork being cleaned, boiled, and molded into a variety of products, including wine stoppers, floor tiles, and even handbags. Of course, they also have a beautiful gift shop. I came home with many cork products from the region, from a handbag (pictured above) and sneakers.

The Algarve Region, Cape St. Vincent and the Sagres Fortress

The Algarve region in southern Portugal boasts some of the country’s most spectacular beaches, dramatic coastal scenery, and fascinating history. Our tour included a short stop at the rugged coastline of Cape St. Vincent, the southwesternmost point in Europe, and we took in the stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Nearby, the Sagres Fortress is a must-visit destination for history buffs, with its imposing walls and stunning views over the sea. The fortress was once home to Prince Henry the Navigator’s famous navigation school, which played a crucial role in the Age of Discovery. The Algarve region is also known for its beautiful beaches, which offer something for everyone, from secluded coves to bustling resort towns.

Our second day was supposed to include a boat ride along the coast, but unfortunately, the sea was too choppy. Instead, our guide took us to a new visitors’ area where we could walk the many steps down to the water and take in the spectacular vistas.

During our second night we explored the local beach, then had dinner on our own, which for me included one of the region’s local delicacies, grilled sardines.

Lisbon, Portugal

We said goodbye to the beautiful Algarve region and boarded our bus for our final transfer to Lisbon, Portugal where we started our tour with a local guide before a quick lunch stop on our own.

Lisbon is a vibrant and captivating city that offers visitors a fascinating mix of old-world charm and modern cosmopolitanism. The city is known for its steep hills, colorful streets, and stunning architecture. I’ve yet to note this, but the sidewalks all over Portugal are made of mosaic black and white stone, everywhere! If you visit, be sure to look down!

As our guided tour continued as we stopped at the beautiful Monument to the Discoveries, the impressive Jeronimos Monastery built to honor voyagers, and the Avenida da Liberdade before enjoying a traditional Fado show and dinner in the heart of the city.

The Monument to the Explorers in Lisbon is a stunning tribute to Portugal’s great maritime history. The monument, which was built in 1960, stands in the Belem district of Lisbon and is over 50 meters high. At the top of the monument is a statue of Henry the Navigator, the famous Portuguese prince who played a key role in the country’s Age of Discovery. The monument is also decorated with intricate carvings and sculptures that celebrate the many explorers who sailed from Portugal to explore the world’s oceans and discover new lands.

Fado is a traditional Portuguese musical style that is characterized by its haunting melodies and melancholic lyrics, and is often performed in small restaurants or bars. During a fado dinner, visitors can enjoy a delicious meal of local specialties while listening to live fado performances by talented musicians. Whether you are a music lover or simply interested in experiencing the authentic culture of Portugal, a fado dinner is an unforgettable way to spend an evening.

Sintra, Portugal

After our hotel breakfast we again boarded our bus for an excursion to the castle at Sintra, which is one of the most iconic and beautiful castles in Europe. Located just outside of Lisbon, the castle sits atop a hill and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The castle itself is a beautiful example of Moorish architecture, with its intricate stonework, delicate tile patterns, and beautiful gardens. We explored the castle’s many rooms and halls, including the impressive Royal Palace, which features beautiful tapestries and furnishings from the 16th and 17th centuries. We then had lunch in the town of Sintra, and enjoyed a local delicacy, Ginja, a cherry liquor, in a chocolate cup.

From there we spent the day simply exploring the beautiful city of Lisbon, shopping, and enjoying the waterfront before heading to our final group dinner. I even bought myself an outfit that reminds me of the sidewalks of Portugal!

If we had more time I would have added the extension in Lisbon that included a tour of Tomar and Fatima, but alas, we headed home after our final night.

EF Go Ahead Portugal Tour Overview – If You Go

Lodging : Excellent! Our hotels were all modern, clean and comfortable.

Food : Breakfasts were magnificent! Our Fado and group dinners were also very good and typically included a welcome or farewell glass or wine or champagne and bottles of wine with dinner.

Excursions and Itinerary : They manage to pack in a lot for a short time. We had enough time to explore on our own as well, but admittedly we left the last excursion to spend more time in Lisbon and we don’t regret that decision.

This EF Go Ahead tour is a fantastic overview of Portugal. The pace is fast and furious, covering multiple cities and World Heritage sites with several hotel stops. Be prepared to do lots of walking, uphill, and spend time on the bus getting from one site to another. Be prepared to be punctual at each meeting point as well as you don’t want to keep the group waiting and there is so much to see and do! All in all I’d recommend this trip if you are interested in seeing as much of Portugal as you can in a short time. This is not going to be a relaxing trip to the coast, and that suits me just fine.

Good value for your money. Exoticca should look into revising their tour descriptions e.g swim with the penguins at Boulders was never an option so donot pack your swimmers & slippers, only adds bulk to your baggage.

Skip this poor planning

Got to hotel at 6 am we slept on lobby chairs they would not give us a cup of coffee because we didn’t, have a room number(holiday inn) room not ready till 3 pm picture of cable car ride not included in your tour ( had to figure out metro to be able to have that experience ..week included 2 holidays everything closed …too much free time ..hotel in business district nothing but coffee shops and pastries :::would not recommend

What an experience !!!

A once in a lifetime trip to Vietnam , Cambodia and Thailand made possible by Exoticca. Very well organised and super guides in all destinations.We travelled by air/coach and boat during our stay. We stayed in some wonderful hotels with lovely pools (deluxe level trip) The included tours were good and we did some of our own too. The people were so helpful and accommodating. Highlights were Hanoi/ Angkor Wat and the quiet bliss of Cape Panwa in Phuket were we could rest after such an epic trip.

Everything went well

Everything went well. However, I was not pleased that the international flight home did not have my wife and I seated together. That was upsetting. You could do a better job of accommodating couples on their seating. Our trip to Switzerland last fall was more relaxing to have an exotic guide with the group full time. Maybe that isn’t possible with the Peru trip?

Exoticca Greece Trip

Never having used a travel company like this before I was a bit apprehensive about it. However, after everything was said and done, this was the best vacation I have had. Exoticca was there every step of the way all the way from answering any questions I had prior to the trip to meeting us at the airport upon arrival to picking us up on time for our transfers and excursions. The tour guides were knowledgeable and made sure everyone had a great time. We upgraded to the Superior package for our hotels and were very pleased with our rooms. Exoticca exceeded our expectations..again!

This was our second trip with Exoticca and again they exceeded our expectations! We ended up having our own private guide/driver. He was a local who was extremely knowledgeable and informative. Our hotels were good and in good locations for the most part. Some of our hotels were excellent. Ireland is a magical place...visiting it on a small tour allowed us to see and experience a great deal in a short expanse of time.

South Africa - Victoria Falls

The South Africa portion of this tour was good. The local company was very organized. They sent travel info including contact numbers to us in advance. The Victoria Falls 0 Zimbabwe portion was not that organize. We did not receive the info until arriving at Victoria Falls, and the tour guide did not provide practical advice to us.

Would recommend, if you don't mind being on your own

We booked an Italy trip with Exottica Travel. My main gripe would be that after you book, any questions, issues, or problems go through a call center. If they can't answer the simply questions, then it gets emailed to a "specialist" to handle. But usually it took a week for an email back from a specialist. Sometimes these things were time sensitive, but that didn't matter. But all in all, the trip was wonderful, good price, & the tour company assigned to us took good care of us. I would recommend this company to folks that like to do their own research on their trip and are comfortable with being basically independent in another country.

Absolutely excellent tour of Jordan

Absolutely excellent tour of Jordan, with a superb, knowledgeable guide "Jafar". Jafar has an archaeology background, so was particularly knowledgeable about Jordan's history and culture - and he generously shared his knowledge in a humorous and thoughtful manner. He (and the tour) was very well organized from start to finish; accommodations ("Charm" category) were very good, and transportation (tour buses, meet-up to & from Queen Alia Airport) was well-organized. Petra blew our socks off! Everything we had hoped, and more! Plus, we enjoyed the people on our tour and 'bonded' very well. Highly recommended!

Our 9-day Switzerland guided tour was…

Our 9-day Switzerland guided tour was awesome! Everything was crazy organized, full of adventures. We hit up Zürich, Werdenberg, Vaduz, Lugano, Ticino, Bellinzona, Zermatt, Montreux, Lausanne, Bern, Interlaken, and Lucerne. The views, mountains , churches, castles, and food were all mind-blowing. Definitely gotta try a guided tour like this, especially in Switzerland!

The guide was very good and helpful. But the duration of the flight schedule was not good because we lost a day. Instead of 7 nights and 8 days, it was 7 nights and 7 days. We arrived very late and everything was shut and only food available from room service was spaghetti.

We were met in every destination and transported to the hotels. Hotels were in really good locations and more than did the job. Exoticca’s people are great and their travel app is a must have!

Exoticca is for budget travellers. Having said that, hotel rooms are sometimes less than desired. For the most part, depending on country & city, accomodations are acceptable to me as a budget traveller. There was at least one hotel that I thought wasn’t up to par even for someone on budget. I let Exoticca know about that. What’s great about Exoticca is their people and information systems, specifically the Exoticca mobile app. The app provides you with updated details of your travel (flights, hotels, daily itinerary, etc) all in one place. And to top it off, Exoticca’s people are customer service-oriented. Kudos!

Portugal is the place to go at the moment. An approximately seven-hour flight from the East Coast, it’s one of the most accessible countries in Europe—but that’s not the only reason why it’s so popular. Portugal is a choose-your-own-adventure country; you can embark on a city exploration, wine tasting tour, action-packed adventure or beach retreat. The best part? You don’t need to pick just one. Everything is a short car ride, train or quick flight away. 

Planning a vacation around Portugal’s beach towns is one of the best ways to organize your trip. Each town offers a glimpse into a different side of the country, from the sweeping coastal capital, to the smaller southern regions, to the sunny islands. With picturesque beaches and an impressive culinary scene with plenty of fresh seafood, there’s something for everyone.  For those looking to narrow down the ample options of scenic towns, start with Lisbon, and then venture down the coast to the Algarve. Discover Portugal's Beach Town Hidden Gems

When you think of a beach town, a bustling city might not be the first thing to come to mind. Lisbon, however, defies expectations at every turn. As the only European capital along the Atlantic coast, Lisbon is as much a beach town as it is a cultural hub. There are a handful of famed museums—like the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and Museu Nacional do Azulejo —and you can admire the pastel-colored architecture of waterfront Belém. Walk to the suburbs of Alfama and Mouraria, along the hillside below the castle. For a home base, the luxurious Four Seasons Ritz is always a safe option. Slightly removed from the commotion of the city, the hotel serves as a relaxing retreat where you can venture up to the rooftop for a grand view of the ocean. After exploring the city and its local beaches, take a trip to the famed resort town of Sintra. Once a royal sanctuary, it now stands as a glamorous historical site, replete with palaces and sweeping vista points. It can be pretty chaotic, so we recommend booking a guide . Upon your return back to Lisbon, stop into Trinca —a hole in the wall local eater—or dine beachfront at Casa Reîa .

You can also visit Lisbon’s northern cousin, Porto, which is famed for its massive bridges and port wine production. Head to the medieval Ribeira district and meander through vibrant streets while observing the ornate architecture. Stay nearby at Gran Cruz House , which overlooks the Douro River. Go to Foz do Douro to experience the city’s buzzy beach, and follow it with drinks at one of the terrace cafés. You can also take a day trip down the coast to Nazaré and watch the surfers come from near and far to tackle the monster 100-foot waves.

Looking to escape the touristy crowds and up for a longer road trip? Smack in the middle of Lisbon and the Algarve (about an hour and forty minutes from the capital) is the lesser-known parish of Melides. The creative community of Melides is a stark contrast to its sceney neighbor, Comporta. An international set of famed artists—designers, painters, architects and more—have second homes in this humble town. You can pop into the quaint restaurants lining the main cobblestone square, opt for a wine tasting, or go horseback riding on the beach. Stay at the Christian Louboutin -designed Vermelho Hotel for one of the most uniquely ornate experiences; he has permanent residence in Melides. It’s an amalgamation of glamorous art and sleepy coastal streets. 

One of Europe’s quintessential beach towns is located just 45 minutes outside of Lisbon. Known for its silky sand and crystal waters, Cascais is the Portuguese Riviera’s top vacation spot. Choose a hotel that’s situated on the coast, like Relais & Châteaux’s Fortaleza de Guincho , which was built on the site of a 17th-century fortress and is home to an eponymous Michelin-starred restaurant. Make sure you squeeze in a cliffside lunch at The Albatroz Hotel overlook for unparalleled ocean views. To take full advantage of all the coastal town has to offer, book a sailboat that takes you along the Atlantic Ocean.

The Algarve is on everyone’s radar as of late, but the southernmost region of Portugal has been enticing travelers since the 15th century. The fishing villages of the past are now filled with restaurants, villas, hotels and bars, making this one of the liveliest beach areas in Europe.  For a bigger resort with a wide range of activities and experiences, book somewhere like Domes Lake Algarve . While you can venture to the beaches, the resort also offers activities in its surrounding lake. Bella Vista Hotel is a romantic oceanfront oasis featuring a L’Occitane spa. Make sure you visit the Bengali Caves on a kayak, paddle board or dolphin cruise from Portimão .  

Dubbed the “Hawaii of Europe,” the Azores are the talk of the travel industry. If you want to stick with just this region, there are five-hour direct flights from New York. The Azores are composed of nine volcanic islands, boasting breathtaking foliage and natural feats. Sao Miguel, the largest of the islands, has lake-filled caderas and Europe’s oldest tea plantation. The Azores archipelago also features lagoons, thermal springs and craters to explore, as well as ample whale watching. Two notable hotels include Octant Furnas and Santa Barbara (with its sister partner White serving as a romantic option for honeymooners). Santa Barbara is the Azores’ first eco-beach resort; a luxurious, calming retreat set amid green pastures and blue waters. Olivia Rodrigo review – raging rock opera from a gen Z powerhouse

OVO Hydro, Glasgow Rodrigo’s second UK tour showcases a confident star at ease with all-out punk-rock and intimate pop alike

T oilet sinks are streaked with purple glitter and lost hair ribbons decorate the foyer. Olivia Rodrigo has not yet arrived, but the Hydro already feels like a teen girl’s bedroom. On stage, Guts – the title of her Grammy-nominated second album – is spelled out by towering, melting candles. A soldout crowd, clad in homemade merch, scream when the T teeters and falls; they know it means the show’s about to start.

Expectations are sky-high for the American singer-songwriter’s second UK tour, not least because her original opening night was rescheduled due to ongoing technical problems with Manchester’s new Co-op Live arena . Rodrigo’s previous visit, in 2022 , intentionally played to small venues that could barely meet demand; a smart decision she has described as “ultimate practice” in stagecraft, designed to balance out her rapid rise to fame in 2021.

That patience, and practice, pays off tonight. Rodrigo skips on stage with the proud, puffed-out chest of a WWE wrestler, over the surging bass line from her sarcastic pop-punk rager Bad Idea Right? Her band would have been riot grrrl heroines in another decade; they careen through an extended outro stuffed with guitar solos while Rodrigo pogos and headbangs and air-guitars with dorky dance-like-nobody’s-watching exuberance.

Collaging a grungy, 90s MTV vibe with silver-screen glamour, the show flicks between all-out rock show and elegant, intimate pop balladeering. Rodrigo tucks her Dr Martens under a grand piano to perform her break-out single Drivers License, but later uses them to stomp on a camera set into the stage. For Vampire, a showstopping, stormy rock opera, she is cast in black and white like a cursed silent film heroine, yet still curls her lip to snarl the song’s furious accusation: “Fame- fucker. ”

Rodrigo rides around the arena on a glowing half moon prop to sing Logical, a Guts album track about a manipulative relationship, but ear-splitting cheering from each section of the crowd as she floats nearer relegates it to background music. Other ballads shine with far simpler treatment; she sits cross-legged with guitarist Daisy Spencer for Happier, from her blockbuster first album Sour, and turns it into a campfire song.

The 21-year-old leads her band with breezy confidence, somersaults her ballads’ big notes with ease and instead focuses on delivering feeling . No wonder she saves Good 4 U and Get Him Back! for the encore: in a feat of stamina, she runs, leaps, bounces and screams through the two pop-rock teen anthems with total commitment to their messy, witty lyrics.

But it’s on All-American Bitch that she directly confronts those enormous expectations. A cathartic, sarcastic song inspired by Joan Didion, the track implodes under the weight of societal pressure – “I’m built like a mother and a total machine” goes one brutal line. “Think about someone that pisses you off and scream your fucking heads off!” Rodrigo yells and thousands of young women take the cue. “I know my place … and this is it,” she shrieks, every inch at home.

Madonna Brings Massive Free Concert to Rio, Capping Celebration Tour

The pop superstar performed a final date on her global trek marking four decades of hits: a set on Copacabana Beach before the largest live crowd of her career.

When Madonna stepped out onto the mammoth stage constructed on Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach on Saturday night in a gleaming halo headpiece and black kimono, she was greeted by the largest live crowd of her four-decade career.

The free show, announced in late March, was a grand finale to the pop superstar’s latest world tour, which has delivered 80 performances since last October . Without ticket data, concert crowd sizes can be difficult to gauge; Riotur, the municipality’s tourism department, estimated that 1.6 million people flooded onto the 2.4-mile stretch of sand on Saturday that had been turned into a roughly $12 million playground surrounding the 8,700-square-foot stage.

It was the culmination of days of Madonna-mania in the city, where talk of the singer, 65, was inescapable. Her songs spilled out of stores and car stereos. Fans assembled outside her hotel and shouted her name. Updates about the concert, which was broadcast on the network Globo TV, dominated local media reports.

The spectacle in Rio was a milestone in Madonna’s career: the victory lap for her first stage retrospective, called the Celebration Tour , in which she chronicled her rise to stardom, performing hits like “Into the Groove,” “Like a Prayer” and “Ray of Light” with a cadre of dancers, four of her six children, and a wardrobe of elaborate costuming that recalled some of her most memorable looks.

“Here we are, the most beautiful place in the world,” Madonna announced early in the concert, indicating the ocean and the mountains around her. “This is magic.” Later, she expounded on her gratitude for her Brazilian fans. “You have always been there for me,” she said. “That flag: that green-and-yellow flag, I see it everywhere. I feel it in my heart.”

The two-plus-hour Rio show hewed closely to the Celebration show, with a few exceptions: Madonna added her 2000 track “Music” to the set list, rearranged as a samba with live drummers and a special guest, the Brazilian drag star Pabllo Vittar. “Live to Tell,” staged as a tribute to victims of AIDS , included photographs of the Brazilian musicians Cazuza and Renato Russo, and the actress Sandra Bréa. For “Vogue,” Madonna appeared in a sparkly dress in the colors of the Brazilian flag and was joined by the pop sensation Anitta , who helped “judge” the competitors strutting down the runway.

The show had lifelong Madonna fans — many of whom came dressed in homage to their heroine in cone bras and lace gloves — screaming and dancing along. Ernesto Magalhães, 42, adorned in the style of Madonna’s “Material Girl” era in a gown and boa while balancing on stilts, epitomized the exuberant spirit of the occasion: “I’ve been a Madonna fan since I was 8; I couldn’t miss this.” Surya Rossi, a 31-year-old illustrator, decided on a last-minute trip from Rio Claro, São Paulo, after coordinating with her cousin, and stayed with friends. “Madonna has been a tremendous influence on me, both as a feminist and an artist,” she said. “Her empowering history and approach inspire me.”

It was also something of a landmark moment for live concerts globally. At a time of astronomical ticket prices and rising production costs for major shows, a free concert attracting a crowd of this scale is exceedingly rare, especially in the United States. California’s Coachella festival, where a three-day general admission pass starts at about $500, draws up to 125,000 attendees a day. Musikfest, a mostly free music festival in Pennsylvania, welcomed about 1.3 million visitors over 11 days last year.

“To have a free show like that in recent years is relatively unheard-of,” Katelyn Yount, the director of festivals at AEG Presents, said of Madonna’s closing show. Hangout, an upcoming music festival on Alabama’s Gulf Coast that is among the annual events AEG produces, is capped each day at about 40,000 attendees, who pay more than $300 for a three-day pass.

If a performance of this magnitude was going to be held anywhere in 2024, it would probably be in Rio, where officials have experience with enormous crowds. In 2006, about 1.5 million people attended a free Rolling Stones concert at Copacabana Beach, Brazilian police and other authorities said at the time. An even larger crowd was said to have gathered for a Rod Stewart show there on New Year’s Eve in 1994.

The idea for the sprawling event was first planted two years ago, when Luiz Oscar Niemeyer, an executive with Bonus Track, a live entertainment company based in Rio de Janeiro, approached Madonna’s managers after hearing about plans for the tour. The Rolling Stones concert in 2006 helped convince him that something like this was possible, he said.

Negotiations stalled until last year, when a Madonna show in Mexico City was announced — ticketed dates for the Celebration Tour ended up wrapping with five nights there at the Palacio de los Deportes — and Niemeyer resumed his efforts to convince the pop star’s representatives and secure funding.

“It was an ambitious project for everyone, aiming to attract the largest audience of her career, and I thought this would help me persuade her,” Niemeyer said in an interview last week.

The concert’s corporate backers include the Brazilian bank Itaú and Heineken, and the government has made a significant investment as well.

Preparation for Madonna-palooza had consumed a segment of the city in recent days. A week ago, cargo planes carried about 270 tons of concert material to the city, including costumes and gym equipment. Eighteen sound and video towers were built across the beach, and last Wednesday, 4,000 workers prepared the stage in scorching heat.

Because this was the only Celebration concert in South America — Madonna last toured there in 2012 — fans congregated from all over the continent. In the days leading up to the event, a Madonna impersonator, Izelene Cristina, danced to “La Isla Bonita” at a bus station as she welcomed travelers. She would not be attending the concert because excitement over the superstar’s performance had led to a flood of bookings.

“Such is the life of an artist,” she said. “You work to move and entertain people.”

On Monday, Madonna and her touring team of about 200 arrived in Rio, heading directly to the French Riviera-inspired Copacabana Palace, the luxury hotel near where the stage was built. Later in the week, crowds gathered as close to the stage as possible, as the pop star crossed a specially built footbridge from the hotel to the stage to rehearse with some of her dancers.

Social media was flooded with clips of Madonna running through songs including the opener, “Nothing Really Matters.” “Are you happy? Are you ready?” she asked the assembled crowd at one point . The response: wild cheering. “OK, just checking,” she replied.

At a press briefing ahead of the concert, officials discussed the safety concerns that can accompany an audience of that size and unpredictable weather on the shore. Last year, the Brazilian D.J. Alok scheduled what had been billed as the “concert of the century” on Copacabana Beach, but a storm led part of the crowd to scatter, and concertgoers were faced with rampant pickpocketing , a problem at least some faced on Saturday night as well.

Marco Andrade, a spokesman for the Rio police, told reporters that the department planned to deploy 3,200 officers at the Madonna concert, compared with about 900 for Alok’s event. He said that facial recognition technology would be used at inspection areas, in addition to drones to monitor the crowd. In the end, the audience stretched into the ocean as well — a collection of boats anchored in the waters near the venue.

The atmosphere on the ground Saturday night was like a World Cup event, street carnival and New Year’s Eve celebration combined. Street vendors offered shirts, hats, cups and fans adorned with Madonna’s face and rainbow colors, and a plethora of barbecue, grilled cheese, empanadas and the Brazilian cocktail caipirinhas were available. To fight the heat, a firefighter atop a fire truck sprayed a jet of water on the crowd.

As the show ended with a remix of her 2009 track “Celebration,” Madonna addressed the audience for a final time: “Thank you, Rio,” adding “obrigada,” the equivalent in Portuguese. She smiled and let go of a Brazilian flag, flipped a white veil over her head and descended beneath the stage.

Maroon 5's Las Vegas residency kicks off this month, and tickets are going fast as the band's concert dates fill up. In addition to securing passes for their festival appearances this year, we've broken down how to buy Maroon 5 tickets for their concert tour below.

Originally formed in 1994, Maroon 5 is celebrating 30 years together as they kick off their Las Vegas residency at the Dolby Live at Park MGM. The new tour, referred to in shorthand as "M5LV: The Las Vegas Residency," is an extension of their 16-show residency last year. After their run in Las Vegas last year proved to be a huge hit, the group led by Adam Levine is back for another 16 shows at the Dolby Live theater this year.

Maroon 5's residency begins on May 17, and will feature performances in May, June, September, and October. The Dolby Live theater isn't the only location that Maroon 5 is performing at this year; the pop rock band is set to make festival appearances and headline other venues around North America throughout the spring, summer, and fall.

Maroon 5 has 16 concert dates lined up for their Las Vegas residency in 2024. Their shows at the Dolby Live begin on May 17 before the band takes their final bow of the tour on October 12. Additionally, Maroon 5 has nine concerts scheduled for their 2024 tour in various cities around the country.

You can buy standard original tickets for Maroon 5's 2024 concert tour on Ticketmaster and Live Nation. Both their Las Vegas residency and outside tour dates still have options available. However, the quantity of remaining original tickets continues to decrease as each concert date approaches.

Passes to see Maroon 5 in their 2024 concert series are also available for purchase through verified ticket resale sites such as StubHub and Vivid Seats . You may find better luck with more variety in seating availability through these resale vendors.

Maroon 5 is also offering VIP packages for their 2024 concert tour. Their Las Vegas residency dates offer a Premium VIP Banquet package beginning at $495, but these tickets must be sold in multiples of two. The band also offers three VIP packages for their tour dates elsewhere: Diamond Premium Seat (starting at $685), Gold Premium Seat (starting at $435), and Silver Hot Seat (starting at $410).

Who is opening for Maroon 5's tour?

Maroon 5 doesn't have any opening acts for their Las Vegas residency concert dates. But, the band will be joined by Maren Morris for their non-festival touring dates outside Las Vegas in 2024.

Maroon 5 hasn't announced an international leg for their 2024 tour. However, the band has two shows already confirmed for Canada in 2024: June 25 in Toronto, Ontario and July 7 in Ottawa, Ontario.

Luckily for her, Amazon is making sure that if anyone wants to leave a negative review about this memoir of hers, they’ll have to buy the book first.

The Amazon page for Noem’s book, No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward , has a message for anyone wanting to leave a review of the book who has yet to buy it. It reads, “Amazon has noticed unusual reviewing activity on this product. Due to this activity, we have limited this product to verified purchase reviews.”

First spotted by MeidasTouch News on Tuesday, the warning is Amazon’s way to slow down a fury of negative reviews that may not actually convey the quality of the book but instead be used by those who want to send a message of what they think about the author.

“We want Amazon customers to shop with confidence knowing that the reviews they see are authentic and trustworthy,” an Amazon spokesperson said in an email Wednesday. “If we notice unusual reviewing activity, we will occasionally limit reviews to verified purchases only.”

Noem’s book currently has a 2.2 rating on Amazon based on 7 reviews. Screenshots from MeidasTouch News appear to show there were far more reviews before Amazon changed the requirements for leaving a rating.

It looks like Goodreads took a similar action by not allowing reviews for the book.

Noem was considered one of the favorites to be Donald Trump’s VP pick . This wave of negative attention might put an end to any hope for that job, but Trump is always full of surprises.

Thousands of Taylor Swift fans are following her across the pond after missing out on her U.S. concert tour last year or being put off by marked-up ticket prices.

LONDON (AP) — Thousands of ride-or-die Taylor Swift fans who missed out on her U.S. concert tour last year or didn’t want to buy exorbitantly priced tickets to see her again found an out-of-the-way solution: Fly to Europe.

The pop star is scheduled to kick off the 18-city Europe leg of her record-setting Eras Tour in Paris on Thursday, and planeloads of Swifties plan to follow Miss Americana across the pond in the coming weeks. The arena where Swift is appearing said Americans bought 20% of the tickets for her four sold-out shows. Stockholm, the tour’s next stop, expects about 10,000 concertgoers from the U.S.

A concert might sound like an odd raison d’etre for visiting a foreign country, especially when fans can watch the Eras Tour from home via the documentary now streaming on Disney+. Yet online travel company Expedia says continent-hopping by Swift’s devotees is part of a larger trend it dubbed “tour tourism” while observing a pattern that emerged during Beyoncé's Renaissance world tour .

Some North American fans who plan to fly overseas for the Eras Tour said they justified the expense after noticing that tighter restrictions on ticket fees and resales in Europe made seeing Swift perform abroad no more costly — and potentially cheaper — than catching her closer to home .

“They said, ’Wait a minute, I can either spend $1,500 to go see my favorite artist in Miami, or I can take that $1,500 and buy a concert ticket, a round-trip plane ticket, and three nights in a hotel room,” Melanie Fish, an Expedia spokesperson and travel expert, said.

That was the experience of Jennifer Warren, 43, who lives in St. Catharines, a city in the Niagara region of Ontario. She and her 11-year-old son love Swift but had no luck scoring what she considered as decently priced tickets in the U.S. Undeterred, Warren and her husband decided to plan a European vacation around wherever she managed to get seats. It turned out to be Hamburg, Germany.

“You get out, you get to see the world, and you get to see your favorite artist or performer at the same time, so there are a lot of wins to it,” said Warren, who works as the director of research and innovation for a mutual insurance company.

TOUR TOURISM: IS IT REALLY A THING?

Hard-core fans trailing their favorite singer or band on tour is not a new phenomenon. “Groupie” emerged in the late 1960s as a somewhat derogatory word for the ardent followers of rock bands. Deadheads took to the road in the 1970s to pursue the Grateful Dead from city to city.

More recently, music festivals like California’s Coachella and England’s Glastonbury, and concert residencies in Las Vegas by the likes of Elton John, Lady Gaga and Adele, have attracted travelers to places they wouldn’t otherwise visit, Fish noted.

Travel and entertainment analysts have also spoken of a pent-up consumer demand for “experiences” over material objects since the coronavirus pandemic. Some think the willingness of music lovers to broaden their fandom horizons is part of the same mass cultural correction.

“It does seem like it’s more than a structural shift, maybe a personality transformation we all went through,” said Natalia Lechmanova, the chief Europe economist for the Mastercard Economics Institute.

As Swift hopscotches across Europe, Lechmanova expects restaurants and hotels to see the same boost that Mastercard observed within a 2.5-mile (4-kilometer) radius of concert venues in the U.S. cities she visited in 2023. The U.S. dollar’s strong value against the euro may also increase retail spending on apparel, memorabilia, beauty products and supplies for the friendship bracelets fans exchange as part of the Eras Tour experience, the economist said.

Former college roommates Lizzy Hale, 34, who lives in Los Angeles, and Mitch Goulding, 33, who lives in Austin, Texas, already had tickets to see the Eras Tour in L.A. last summer when they decided to try to get ones for Paris, London or Edinburgh, Scotland, too. They saw a Europe concert trip as a makeup for travel plans they had in May 2020 to celebrate Goulding’s birthday but had to cancel due to the pandemic.

Goulding managed to secure VIP tickets for one of Swift’s three Stockholm shows. He, Hale and two other friends scheduled a 10-day trip that also includes time in Amsterdam and Copenhagen.

“As people who enjoy traveling and enjoy music, if you can find an opportunity to combine the two, it’s really special,” said Hale, who is pregnant with her first child.

FOR STOCKHOLM, 120,000 SWIFTIES CAN’T BE WRONG

The local economic impact of what the zeitgeist has termed “Swiftonomics” and the “Swift lift” can be considerable . It’s no wonder the exclusive arrangement Singapore’s government made with Swift to make the city-state her only tour stop in Southeast Asia earlier this year aroused regional jealousy .

No European governments have complained of their countries not being among the dozen selected for the Europe leg of the Eras Tour, although some fans have expressed surprise that Gelsenkirchen, a city with a population of about 264,000 is one of the three cities in Germany that made the cut.

Airbnb reported Tuesday that searches on its platform for the U.K. cities where Swift is performing in June and August — Edinburgh, Liverpool, Cardiff and London — increased an average of 337% when tickets went on sale last summer.

Not to be outdone when it comes to trend-spotting, the property rentals company cited the demand as an example of “passion tourism,” or travel “driven by concerts, sports and other cultural events.”

In Stockholm , 120,000 out-of-towners from 130 countries -- among them 10,000 from the U.S. — are expected to swarm Sweden’s capital this month, Stockholm Chamber of Commerce Chief Economist Carl Bergqvist said. Stockholm is the only Scandinavian city on Swift’s tour, and airlines added extra flights from nearby Denmark, Finland and Norway to bring people to the May 17-19 shows, he said.

The city’s 40,000 hotel rooms are sold out even though prices skyrocketed for the tour dates, Bergqvist said. Concert visitors are expected to pump around 500 million Swedish kroner, or over $46 million, into the local economy over the course of their stays, an estimate that does not include what they paid for Swift tickets or to get to Sweden, he said.

“So this is going to be huge for the tourism sector in Sweden and Stockholm in particular,” Bergqvist said.

Nightclubs, restaurants and bars are seizing the opportunity to cater to fans with Taylor Swift-themed events, such as karaoke, quizzes and after-concert dance parties.

Houston resident Caroline Matlock, 29, saw Swift more than a year ago when the Eras Tour came to the Texas city. Now she’s making more friendship bracelets and trying to learn a few words of Swedish as she prepares to see the 3 1/2-hour show in Stockholm. The idea of seeing Swift in Europe was her friend’s, and Matlock needed some persuading at first.

“I was like, ‘I only want to go if it’s a country I haven’t been to. I’ve seen Taylor Swift,’” she said.

Visiting the Scandinavian cities of Oslo and Gothenburg is on their itinerary. The concert is the last night of the trip and Matlock looks forward to interacting with Swifties from other countries: “Americans tend to have a very obsessive culture, especially Taylor Swift-related, so I’m curious if the crowd will be more toned-down.”

WILL TOUR TOURISM ENDURE AFTER ERAS?

It remains to be seen if the music tourism trend has legs as long and strong as Swift’s and Beyoncé's, and if it will carry over to Billie Eilish, Usher and other artists with world tours scheduled next year. Expedia’s Fish thinks other big-name artists in Europe this summer will prove that booking a foreign trip around a concert is catching on.

Kat Morga, a travel consultant based in Nashville, isn’t so sure. Morga saw Swift perform in Nashville last year and helped two clients with school-aged children book European family vacations this summer that include seeing Swift in concert. But she thinks the difficulty of navigating ticket purchases through language barriers, currency conversions, international banking regulations and the risk of cancellations will limit the appeal of regular gig getaways.

“I think this is an anomaly,” Morga said. “People aren’t typically going to build their $20,000 huge family vacation only because Taylor Swift is there. She’s the one-off. She’s special.”

Booking Holdings CEO Glenn Fogel, whose company operates Booking.com, priceline.com, agoda.com, Kayak and OpenTable, is even less enthusiastic about concert tours as a tourism instigator. The Swift Effect causes a “little blip” when the superstar goes to smaller destinations, but for the worldwide travel industry, “one star touring around does not make a difference,” he said.

“It may just shift it a little bit. A person was going to go to the Caribbean for a week vacation. Instead that person (says), ‘Let’s travel to the Taylor Swift thing,’” Fogel said. “It doesn’t increase it. It just moves it from here to there.”

I had expected a tour guide but the experience ran smoothly and there was extra time to explore on our own. There wasn’t a group of people to connect with although we did meet one other couple in the first hotel. We had three languages spoken on our tours so there was little time for English. Maybe a COVID thing with not enough tourists to fill the bus with one language. Tour to Cascais was disappointing. Only 45 mins there and not for lunch. Too much time spent in Sines. I’m not sure if I would take this kind of tour again but it was a different experience.

We had a terrible experience with Exodus. We signed up for a "Self-Guided Cycling in the Douro Valley" several months in advance. Our detailed contacts were asked for by Exodus, but then never communicated to the actual operator. This meant that our agreed pick-up driver never showed up (he had incorrect information) and we had to fumble with international calls and roaming charges to contact a real person on a Saturday morning. Exodus could have offered us compensation on the spot for this ordeal. I wouldn't recommend their trips to anyone. Look around as Exodus charges a fortune.

I enjoyed all the activities but do ensure you were good shoes for the home. recommend that a visit to the cheese factory is added the morning you arrive on Sao Jorge.
