After reading the reviews about this hotel we were pleasantly surprised it was a lot better than we thought. The hotel is very old so people should not go expecting it to be a boutique hotel, on saying that the bedroom was small but clean bedding very clean as were towels in bathroom, at the end of the day you only sleep there so cleanliness is the most important thing to us. We had dinner included which was buffet and there was a good choice as was breakfast which was also included. Staff very helpful and polite, the only downer was the £20 per day parking which adds a hefty £40 to your bill but saying all that a good stay

Don’t drink or eat in the hotel, really expensive. Difficult to find a member of staff that you could converse with easily. Really steep walk in and out of town so would not suit anyone who is not fairly fit. As long as you don’t expect too much you may have a reasonable stay!

Wow what a let down! From the moment we tried to check in, the girl on the desk was obviously new and was at times struggling to cope so she kept asking for help from the manager in the back office who didn’t help at all. No directions to the lift, left to your own devises to find it!! The decor is so tired, threadbare carpets on the stairs. The room had stains on the carpet and was in need of a lick of paint. Breakfast was a very poor affair, not much variety and the tea and coffee urns not labelled. Not sure but this hotel maybe a hostel for the dss. No towels in the room.

I booked on a free cancellation no pre-payment basis. The hotel pre-authorised my card by putting a £50.00 hold on it two days before my stay but did not even inform me! On my bank statement it came up as -50.00 but with no name so I called up my bank and they told me that this hotel should have released my funds within 7 days and it had been 10 and to call them. I spoke to a man on reception at 8:30am who took my details and promised a call back. No apology but I just wanted my money. At 1.00pm I still had not received a call back and desparate at this point (I’m a single Mum to a child and pregnant) because I needed my money, I called and called and called. And it rang and rang and rang. Around 1.30pm I gave up and called Central Reservations and the gentleman said he would call them and get them to call me. He said it was near “early check in time” maybe that’s why. An hour later I began trying to call them again and it still rang and rang and rang. I tried for another two hours every couple of minutes. At 4:30pm I called Central Reservations again and the lady tried to call them herself and failed. She told me it was “near check in time” maybe that’s why (check in is at 3). So I emailed. I was given a second number for the hotel. I continued trying to call both numbers and at 6:00pm a lady answered and said the manager was not here and no note had been made of it so I’d have to call again in the morning. She wasn’t apologetic at all after explaining. I told her it was important and I had to speak to someone and she put me through to a lovely gentleman called Jose who for the first time had some sincerity to him and apologised. But even he could not answer why the phones had been ignored all day and he told me to email reception which I had done and he then checked and saw it but nobody had checked the emails. Sometimes great service can be the saving grace of a run down hotel (the only benefits are the location and spa facilities in my eyes) but it’s just poor all round. Called again this morning at 8:00am and would you believe it....ring ring ring. I will always stick to booking my local favourites instead of this place ANY DAY.

Had a great week here, the rooms are large and a little quirky which some have called dated but ours was very clean. Breakfast was OK, better if you got there before 8.30 there was more choice and major beware on the coffee it's awful but there's juice to see you through and a great coffee bar in the pavilion garden opposite. Perfect location literally 2 mins to the beach but it's on a sharp hill so going down is fine but for the less able its a steep but short walk/climb back.
