Eurowings Review [2024]: Should you fly with this airline?

Eurowings Review [2024]: Should you fly with this airline?

Have you heard of Eurowings, the new branch of Lufthansa Airlines? This new airline focus on cheap flights, mostly within Europe. But you know cheap flights don’t always translate into a good experience, so use this Eurowings review to make sure you're not going to waste your money!

eurowings travel

Hearing “cheap flights” makes my heart flutter. But I’ve used enough low cost airlines to know that they are either a really good way to save money or an easy way to have a horrible travel experience!

Eurowings is a European budget airline, similar to Vueling Airlines and easyJet . Budget airlines can be a great option for avid travelers who want to get the most value for their money, but they are usually a hit or miss.

So to help you decide, I've listed the pros and cons of taking Eurowings flights. Learn more about Eurowings and figure out whether it's worth considering when you want to plan your next European adventure!

Eurowings Airlines Logo

What is Eurowings?

As mentioned above, Eurowings is a low-cost airline that is a part of the Lufthansa Group. They fly to over 100 destinations in more than 50 countries. The airline was founded in 1996 and rebranded in 2015 to focus on low-cost short and long-haul flights.

While Eurowings is a low-cost carrier, you only pay the lowest prices if you book the basic fares with no extras. Extras include the option to cancel, seats, and bags. If you want any of these, it may cost you a lot more than originally planned.

Where does Eurowings fly?

A majority of Eurowings flights are within Europe, specifically Germany. They also fly to select tourist destinations in the rest of the world like the Caribbean and Turkey.

Here’s the current list of Eurowings’ destination countries:

  • Czech Republic
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom

...and many more!

Remember to confirm any changes to these destinations by checking their website closer to your travel date.

How and Where to Book a Eurowings Flight

The easiest way to book a flight with Eurowings is on their website!

Once you're on their website, you just need to input where you are flying to and from, when you want to fly, and how many tickets you need. Then, all the available flights and fares will show up and you can book your flight!

You can also search for Eurowings flights using a search engine like Google Flights or Skyscanner . These are good options if you want to compare the times and prices of Eurowings flights to other airlines.

If you choose a Eurowings flight from one of these websites, they will take you directly to the Eurowings website to complete your booking.

Eurowings Check-In Process

Checking in for a Eurowings flight is easy, and there are a few ways you can do it for free, even with the BASIC fare. You can check in from your computer on the Eurowings site and all you need is your booking number!

You can also use your phone and check in through your browser or the Eurowings app, which you can download on the App Store or Google Play. With the Eurowings app, you can easily access your boarding pass, or you can have it texted or emailed to you. Whatever you prefer!

The final option is to use a self-service check-in machine at any of the following airports:

  • Cologne/Bonn
  • London Heathrow

They might charge you if you try to check in at the airport at the counter. So, plan ahead and check in before you arrive. Otherwise, you have to spend your money on airport check-in instead of a yummy airport snack!

Eurowings Baggage Policy

Eurowings has three different types of bags that they allow you to bring on a flight.

  • Small hand baggage: 40 x 30 x 25 cm (everyone gets one regardless of the ticket you book)
  • Large hand baggage: 55 x 40 x 23 cm, max. 8 kg
  • Checked bag: Up to 12 kg

Not all tickets automatically allow you to bring all types of baggage, so make sure you check what kind of ticket you booked.

Eurowings' BASIC fare allows you to bring a small cabin bag only unless you pay extra for an upgrade. You can add a small bag up to 12 kg for as little as US$14 or a larger bag up to 23 kg for as little as US$20.

SMART fares allow you to bring one of each of the three bags with the price already included in your fare. Or, you can book a BIZclass fare and bring two large cabin bags and two checked bags with you, already included in the ticket price.

So, if you overpack like me, you want to book a SMART or BIZclass fare to get more bags!

Pro tip: Always plan to purchase baggage beforehand, as it gets more expensive if you want to buy later. Needing to buy luggage at the check-in counter can really add unexpected dollars to your trip.

Picking Eurowings Seats

I’m a window seat girl, and I know you probably have a preference for where you sit on planes too.

The SMART and BIZclass fares let you choose your seat on your Eurowings flights. If you have a long flight or want an aisle seat so you can get up as much as you want, these fare types are your best option.

You cannot choose your seat with a BASIC fare unless you are willing to pay an extra fee. The fee depends on the flight and what type of seat you want. The window, aisle, and extra legroom seats all cost the most.

Unless you are comfortable with sitting between two people for a few hours, you will have to upgrade to a higher fare or pay for your seat. Otherwise, fingers crossed that you get lucky and don’t end up with a middle seat.

If you are assigned a bad seat at check-in, you can pay more to upgrade your seat if there are any available.

The extra fee for choosing a seat is one of the ways they get you to spend more money with them or upgrade to a higher fare. It’s annoying that Eurowings do this, but it’s how many low-cost carriers make their money.

How to Cancel a Eurowings Flight

If you cannot make your flight or decide not to fly with Eurowings for any other reason, you can cancel your flight.

The easiest way to cancel a Eurowings flight is by logging into your online account or in their mobile app. You can also call the airline directly, and they will help you cancel or change your flight.

However, the amount of money you get refunded from your cancellation depends on the flight you booked.

You can only get the airport taxes and fees refunded with BASIC flights. Or, you can change your flight and just pay the difference in fare, if there is one. With SMART and BIZClass fares, you can add the Flex Premium option. This option allows you to cancel with no fees.

While this is another thing you have to pay for, it is worth it if your plans are not set, and you might want your money back if you don’t fly.

Is Eurowings worth it?

Eurowings offers a lot of cheap flights in Europe, but the prices may not be as low as you expect. If you want to choose your seat or bring more than a small bag, you have to pay much more than the advertised low fare.

After adding in all the extra costs, you might be better off booking with a more reputable airline.

But, if you are a light traveler or just want a quick weekend getaway between two European cities, Eurowings is worth it. You can fly without all the bells and whistles for cheap with the BASIC fare, which allows you to bring a small bag. So for budget-travelers, Eurowings is a popular option.

Eurowings works if you just want to take a short trip within Europe, short enough to just need a small bag. Otherwise, you will spend more than you expect, and it will not be worth it to fly on a low-budget airline.

Our Rating: 3.0/5

  • Many direct flights, especially from Germany
  • Cheap fares if you travel light
  • Cheapest fares only include a small bag
  • Extra costs add up
  • No seat selection for BASIC fares

Eurowings vs eurowings discover: what's the difference.

While Eurowings and Eurowings Discover are both owned by the Lufthansa Group, their daily operations could not be further apart. They both have different air operator certificates and IATA codes, and while one focuses on low-cost short-haul routes in Europe, the other markets long-haul leisure destinations around the globe. With this in mind, let's take a look and highlight what the differences are between the two German airlines.

Created in 1993 following the merger of two German commuter airlines Nürnberger Flugdienst (NFD) and Reise- und Industrieflug (RFG), Eurowings began life with a fleet of ATR 42 and 72 aircraft. The airline later added BAe 146 aircraft to its fleet before moving on to larger Airbus A320 aircraft and even an Airbus A310. In the beginning, Lufthansa had a 24.9% stake in Eurowings which increased to 49% in 2001 before taking control in 2005 and complete ownership in 2011.

Lufthansa could not decide how to operate Eurowings

For years, Lufthansa could not figure out how it wanted to use Eurowings, which, at the time, was a mixture of Germanwings and other domestic leisure carriers. By flying a combination of short-haul European flights and long-haul tourist destination flights, Eurowings had no true identity and was in some ways competing against parent airline Lufthansa.

In 2019 the Lufthansa Group announced that all Eurowings long-haul flights would cease and that the routes would be transferred to other airlines in the group that included Lufthansa, Brussels Airlines, Austrian Airlines, and Swiss. In doing this, Eurowings could consolidate its European presence and focus on short-haul flights with Airbus A320 family aircraft. Also, now more streamlined, it would allow Eurowings to cut costs and compete better with other European low-cost carriers like Ryanair and easyJet.

The pandemic made Lufthansa consolidate

Fast forward to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Lufthansa Group moved to survival mode, looking at how it could consolidate further to ride out the storm. In early 2021, the Lufthansa Group announced that it was starting a new airline that would be focused on long-haul leisure travel. The airline was to operate similarly to Condor by working with travel agencies. More importantly, it would be a direct subsidiary of Lufthansa rather than Eurowings and would operate on long-haul and medium-haul routes.

Based at Germany's two big hubs in Frankfurt and Munch Eurowings Discover would operate more like a full-service airline with economy class premium economy and business class fare offerings. Passengers in all classes would have access to inflight entertainment of a standard equal to Lufthansa's.

The differences between Eurowings and Eurowings Discover fleets

When looking at ch-aviation.com 's fleet information for Eurowings, we can see that the airline has trimmed its fleet to concentrate on short-haul destinations. According to the data, Eurowings' current fleet of 95 aircraft is made up of the following planes:

  • 2 x Airbus A220-300s (both wet-leased from airBaltic)
  • 36 x Airbus A319-100s (eight wet-leased)
  • 53 x Airbus A320-200s (11 wet-leased)
  • 2 x Airbus A321-200s
  • 2 x Boeing 737-800s (both wet-leased)

Looking at the Eurowings Discover fleet, we can see that its 12 aircraft are more suitable for medium and long-haul operations. The planes in Eurowings Discover's current fleet are:

  • 3 x Airbus A320-200s
  • 3 x Airbus A330-200s
  • 6 x Airbus A330-300s

When summing up the differences between Eurowings and Eurowings Discover, we can say that Eurowings is a German low-cost airline. In contrast, Eurowings Discover is a German long-haul leisure airline similar to Condor.

Incredible Service!

Spoke with a great customer service representative today who quickly and professionally fixed my ticket right before traveling. Thank you so much and will travel often with this airlines!

The app and your gate

I was trying to go to Salzburg from Hamburg. Got the the airport early wanted at gate C07 and kept checking for updates on the app for gate changes and listening for any announcements. No info change on the app also Eurowings doesn’t count paying attention to your app as being responsible. I missed my flight and it’s apparently “my fault” granted when 5 of us ran to the correct gate from the original gate there was still a bus outside the door and still 20 minutes before the flight took off. But no they wouldn’t let any of the 5 of us get on the plane. They sent us to customer service which was a joke. It was more like customer judgement and ridicule and they didn’t want to deal with us so they put us on the phone with another customer service rep he only offered to refund the airport tax. He then passed us off to another rep and the real kicker, one of the desk reps comes over and decides we’ve been on the phone for too long and threatens to hang up the phone and call security. Don’t fly with Eurowings. Spend a little extra go somewhere else.

Terrible experience - deletes all info on last step

Do not try to book flights using this app! I have tried to book flights using this app for over a year, and always have this problem. When I get to entering my credit card as a last step of the booking, all data previously entered gets deleted and the booking doesn’t go through. Only possible way is to book on website! Unforgivable not to fix such a basic app error for such a long time. Several people I’ve talked to have the same experience. Another example of Lufthansa‘s awful and backward service. This is an airline unable to deal with technology and stuck in the 1990s. I say this regretfully as I’ve been a HON circle member for many years in the past and tended to like them.

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

Lufthansa Focuses On A Premium Travel Experience While Critical Of EU Environmental Policies

  • The CEO of Lufthansa Group hailed 2023 as an outstanding year for the group.
  • The executive emphasized the group's focus on a premium travel experience.
  • While Spohr was hopeful that the EU would approve the merger with ITA Airways soon, the executive was highly critical of domestic and EU policies.

During Lufthansa Group’s annual general meeting (AGM) with its shareholders on May 7, 2024, which followed shortly after the group’s massive Q1 losses due to several labor actions by its unions, Carsten Spohr, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Lufthansa Group, described 2023 as an outstanding year. Furthermore, the CEO emphasized the group’s focus on a premium travel experience, especially with the introduction of the Allegris cabin on Lufthansa’s aircraft, including the Airbus A350-900.

Spohr, who began his speech by turning back the clock to the pandemic, remarked that the group lost up to €100 million ($107.5 million) per hour when all of the flights were canceled, adding that only three years later, the Lufthansa Group experienced an “outstanding” year. In 2023, all of the group’s airlines, including Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS), and their regional affiliates were profitable for the first time.

At the same time, the CEO of the group noted that certainties are a thing of the past, saying that change is the new normal and that “the ability to adapt is the new reality.” Still, Spohr commented that 2023 was the third-best year for the group, continuing that Lufthansa’s customers, employees, and shareholders benefit from the record results.

As a result, one of the proposals at the AGM was to reinstate a dividend to the group’s shareholders, offering a payment of €0.30 ($0.32) per share. In addition, Spohr highlighted that its employees received profit-sharing bonuses worth up to €500 million ($538 million). Looking back through its dividend policy, the airline group has not paid out a dividend to its shareholders since 2018. Then, the company’s shareholders approved a €0.80 ($0.86) dividend per share.

1st Time Ever: All Lufthansa Airlines Were Profitable In 2023

Emphasis on premium travel.

Nevertheless, Spohr dedicated significant time to discussing the group’s emphasis on providing a premium travel experience to its customers, especially to travelers who are flying with Lufthansa and SWISS. While the former has already introduced Allegris into service, the letter will introduce the SWISS Senses cabin in 2025.

The CEO highlighted that the Allegris cabin entered commercial service on a flight between Munich Airport (MUC) and Vancouver International Airport (YVR) on May 1, marking a new era for the German airline. Still, Spohr was cautious, saying that supply chain challenges, including aircraft and seat delivery delays, have offset the strong travel demand.

The Airbus A350-900, registered as D-AIXT, which flew to YVR on May 1, still lacks a first class cabin, with an interior wall of the aircraft showing a loading motif. When Simple Flying was invited to get a preview of the cabin, the first class part of the aircraft had economy class seats with a tag saying,

"Soon Ill have to make way for the new Lufthansa Allegris First Class.

Still, Spohr mentioned that the group’s objective is clear: to provide an end-to-end premium travel experience for its passengers. As such, the company established a task force to improve its stability, punctuality, customer service, and other factors in order to ensure its competitiveness in the premium space.

According to the CEO, the trend of leisure travelers choosing business or first class cabins for their travels continues “unabated,” with the executive adding that business travel continues to recover. That was particularly evident on transatlantic routes.

31,000 allegris seats.

Nevertheless, Spohr said that Lufthansa’s aircraft will be fitted with 31,000 Allegris seats on its long-haul aircraft, with each new aircraft delivery from the manufacturer coming with either the Allegris or SWISS Senses cabin. Spohr noted that some of the current long-haul aircraft, including the quad-engine jets, the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8, will be retrofitted with the new premium cabin.

In another important development for the group, Spohr stated that it would build a new lounge at New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), with the airport upgrading its home terminal, Terminal 1. The new terminal should be completed by May 2026.

According to data from the aviation analytics company Cirium , the Lufthansa Group airlines, namely Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa, and SWISS, have scheduled 54 weekly flights to JFK in May. By June, the schedule should expand to 55 weekly itineraries, amounting to 16,898 weekly seats.

At the same time, Spohr stated that the group expects to take delivery of 20 new aircraft during the current year, with a total of 250 of the latest-generation aircraft in its backlog. This includes the Boeing 777-9, with Jens Ritter, the CEO of Lufthansa, saying during an event in early May that the aircraft would arrive in 2026 rather than 2025, according to a report by Aviation Week .

The groups competitiveness.

Spohr overviewed and emphasized that the group’s competitiveness comes from its multi-hub, multi-airline, and multi-market business model, which is the core of its strategy, with the group looking to expand its business with the addition of ITA Airways.

The European Commission (EC) sent a statement of objections to the parties involved in the deal, namely Lufthansa and the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance (Ministero dell'Economia e delle Finanze, MEF), in April. Still, Spohr said the group expects a “positive decision from Brussels during the Summer,” with the CEO adding that the merger would benefit everyone, including its business model.

Lufthansa Reportedly Threatens To Withdraw From ITA Purchase Over EU Concerns

According to the CEO, Lufthansa City Airlines will launch its services soon, first flying from Munich Airport (MUC), with flights from Frankfurt Airport (FRA) starting in due time. Spohr explained that the new airline will ensure that the group’s long-haul services have competitive feeder services at its hubs.

At the same time, the executive was highly critical of the regulators in the European Union (EU), remarking that the industry needs a policy that sees aviation as a development opportunity. Spohr criticized high taxes in Germany and environmental fees that would make long-haul travel via EU-based hubs uncompetitive.

The publicly available memo of Spohr’s speech pointed out that the ‘Fit for 55’ package will make a long-haul flight from Barcelona, Spain, to Tokyo, Japan, via FRA cost €230 more. However, stopping at Istanbul Airport (IST) will increase the price of the long-haul flight by only €35 ($37.6), with Spohr concluding that travelers switching aircraft at non-EU hubs will harm domestic travel and the climate in the long run.
