Hungary

Hungary motorcycle tours

Hungary is one of the most unique countries in all of Europe. Situated in the very heart of Europe, Hungary can claim a unique place in the continent. And so can their people. Their language is spoken nowhere else. Their folksongs bear no resemblance to those of other nations. Yet, the Hungarian people have been living in the centre of Europe for over 1,100 years.

Roads and Riding

Hungary occupies the Carpathian Basin to the southwest, and much of the country's geography is dominated by water. Roads through lush green countryside and rushing rivers are very good and well signed.

Climate & Environment, When to Go

Hungary has a temperate continental climate with July and August being the warmest months. Any time of year is a good to visit Hungary, with certain areas, like Lake Balaton seeing increased tourism in July and August.

Sights, People, Food and Drink

Budapest, Hungary's capital, is the nation's jewel No 1. The metropolis with a population of two million is bisected by the mighty flow of the Danube with hills and valleys on the Buda side and flat, low-lying Pest on the other. The riverside panorama has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Anybody who has ever seen it illuminated by night can understand why. Ethnic Magyars make up approximately 93% of the population, a fun-loving, very lively people. Hungarian cooking is loaded with paprika, with much of it showing up in their stews and goulashes. Hungary produces many nice wines to match these peppery dishes.

 The Transylvanian Trek

Discover magical romania, transylvanian trek overview.

  • 3 Countries: Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania. Optional side trips to Serbia, Poland, and Ukraine.
  • Ride the famous Transfăgărăşan and Romania's highest pass, the Transalpina
  • Discover great roads Carpathian mountains.
  • Take a step back in time.

Tour Romania with the Beachs

Transylvania—a place that brings to mind mystery, folklore, legends, and of course, Dracula. It is also the location of the Transfăgărăşan, the pass described as “the most amazing road we have ever seen” by the guys on the TV Series Top Gear.

The cabal —to get to, and ride the Transfăgărăşan. The method —a motorcycle ride to discover all that is good between Budapest, Hungary, and Brașov, Romania. The association —motorcyclists with a keen sense of adventure and curiosity.

This itinerary explores places hidden from Western eyes for decades on its way through Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, and a tiny sliver of Poland. A ride across the border into Ukraine, and another side trip to Serbia are possible.

Riders will find countries rich in local folklore, with magnificent cultural and historical heritage. September is a favorite time to travel through these mountains as a brilliant pallet of fall color fills the horizon.

Buda and Pest, on the Blue Danube

Appropriate decadence might be the term for hopping off an international flight and slipping into a thermal bath upon your arrival in Budapest. It certainly would be appropriate, as travelers have been taking the waters here since Roman times. What better way to relax after a few hours in the air?

Suburban Buda and its historic castle district offer medieval streets and houses, museums, caves and Roman ruins. The dynamic Pest side boasts the largest parliament building in Europe and riverside promenades, flea markets, bookstores, antique stores and café houses. This is a big city—the largest in Hungary. The historical sections are not so big as to be overwhelming. In fact, they are sized perfectly for a day's exploration.

Folk Group Performing In Budapest

A Folk Group Performing In Budapest

Monday is a day to ride, and to discover the Hungarian countryside. In less than 20 miles we are riding in pastoral farmland, enjoying easy roads and becoming familiar with our motorcycles.

Pass through villages that have seen a stream of armies over the centuries. In addition to the Turks, the Tartars, Habsburgs, and Russians have all invaded and occupied Hungary. The national anthem describes the Hungarians as "people torn by fate.” They have persevered, and exist today while the "conquers" have faded or disappeared.

To The Mountains!

Moving away from Budapest it doesn't take long before we cross into another country. Slovakia, half of the former Czechoslovakia, sits like a beacon on the northern horizon. Having emerged from its frumpy, communist-era cocoon and joined the EU, this little known area awaits discovery.

The High Tatras are the reason we head this way. This magnificent area has been designated a National Park—in two countries! Containing the highest peaks in Slovakia, Poland, and the entire Carpathian mountain chain, the Tatras offer the best motorcycle roads of either country.

Slovenia's Tatra Mountains

Slovenia's Tatra Mountains, our playground for a short time

Košice, the last stop in Slovakia, has one of Europe's most special historic districts. This was the first settlement in Europe to be granted its own coat-of-arms. In town locals predominate, and carry on as if the downtown is simply where they live, vs. the idyllic setting that it actually is. It is rewarding to spend time wandering among the grand buildings and parks of the city center, with Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Art Nouveau architecture vying for attention.

The routes to Košice allow plenty of options. If the natural beauty of the Tatras have captured you, take a morning walk around the lake. Enjoy a lake-side lunch and take the short route to Košice. You will easily arrive in time to relax a bit before dinner. Have a hankering to putter about Košice in the afternoon? Take that same short route, and arrive with plenty of time to discover the city. Or enjoy one of the longer rides around the Tatras, maybe take a side trip into Poland for lunch, and then carry on to the night's accommodation. On a tour with the Rob & Gretchen you may do it your way!

Across the Plain

Contrasts! From the mountains we ride across Hungary's breadbasket, the Great Plain. Wheat fields stretch as far as one can see to the west and the south. The rural roads have light traffic, and the day is one of easy riding. Best of all, it ends with our arrival in Romania!

The international borders - Hungary to Slovakia, Slovakia to Romania - are obvious. Not simply because there are still formal border stops, but because it is different on the other side.

Romania and Transylvania

The next few nights are spent in Transylvania. We will visit UNESCO protected medieval cities, salt mines worked from the middle ages, and ride through villages with historical ties preceding the Romans.

Transylvania is one of the most beautiful natural regions in Europe, dotted with picturesque, medieval fortress towns and monasteries. Here you find old villages where people live exactly as they did a hundred years ago. Decades of Communism changed the cities but did little to alter the pastoral countryside.

Our overnights on the tour have been alternating between cities and rural settings. The double overnight in Colțești is rural Romania at its best.

An old wooden church near Mount Piatra Secuiului

An old wooden church in the hills near Mount Piatra Secuiului

The tranquility here may be exactly what is needed to create that "perfect" day. If more exploring is in line with your idea of a motorcycle vacation, visit the remarkable salt mines in nearby Turda, or the old section of the city of Cluj-Napoca. Or head up one of the numerous gravel tracks into the mountains and explore centuries-old traditional buildings miles from anywhere!

Colțești's parish church, in the shadow of Mount Piatra Secuiului

Colțești's parish church, in the shadow of Mount Piatra Secuiului

It is difficult to move quickly through this land. The roads don't allow it, and somehow it feels wrong. This is a slow moving place where everything operates on a different standard. It doesn't take long to get used to it, and to wonder if it is—maybe—the best pace.

Fortified Churches

From the mid 12th century Saxons occupied Transylvania, and these 'newcomers' developed a unique fortification as defense against Ottoman raids. Today the Saxon fortified churches project power and protection in secular and sacred ways. One of the finest examples of a Saxon church lies in the center of the village of Bietan, so to there we go. Not only for the impressive church, but for the authentic Transylvanian hospitality we will enjoy in the even smaller neighboring village of Copșa Mare. This is just another of those magic stops that make the Transylvania Trek so special.

The Transylvanian Alps - the high roads!

We move south to the border of the Romanian states of Transylvania and Wallachia, and ride the Transylvanian Alps, the ranges of the Southern Carpathians. It is here that we have come to play on our modern machines. The country’s highest road, the Transalpina, or “King’s Road,” is one of our targets. Another is Top Gear’s favorite, the Transfăgărăşan. Nicolae Ceaușescu, post WWII dictator of Romania, built the Transfăgărăşan Road at great cost in the early 70s. The Transalpina was rebuilt beginning in 2010. We conquer them both, one on the way to, and one on the way from, Brașov.

Take a break in Brașov

Our double overnight in Brașov gives us time to ride a variety of other great, coiling roads, to enjoy stunning landscapes, and ride through pristine old mountain forests.

This is Wallachia, the Romanian State south of Transylvania, and the countryside of Vlad the Impaler. A foe to the Saxons who established Brașov, Vlad is a hero to some Romanians, a villain to fans of Bram Stroker’s Dracula. On Mt. Tampa, within full sight of the fortified city, wooden stakes were driven through Vlad's Saxon prisoners who might take days to die an agonizing death. That is but one gruesome side of the city's history.

Today the old part of town is a delight. The pedestrian area around one of the largest Gothic houses of worship in the world, the Black Church, is the perfect place to kick back and people-watch. Once again most of those around you are locals. Romania isn't overrun by tourists, which makes our extended visit seem even more like a discovery.

Wrapping it up - back to Budapest

Over the next three days our general direction is west, on the return leg to Budapest. That requires crossing the Hungarian Plain once again, so the mission of the route planner is to maximize the good riding as long as possible. We are happy to report that mission accomplished!

Departing Brașov  those who want a longer ride could traverse the Transfăgărăşan in the opposite direction. Those who prefer a shorter day will enjoy miles of fun roads between Brașov and Sibiu, a Romanian city nothing short of a jewel. After a walk about town it is time to get back on the bikes and cross the mountains once more to our destination, the spa town of Baile Gore.

From Baile Gore the recommended ride is, of course, the twisties of the Transalpina. This day of great contrast (that seems to be the theme for this entire adventure, doesn't it?) begins high in the Transylvanian Alps and ends at the Romanian / Serbian border near the Danube Gorge, known as the "Iron Gate." Sitting on the river's edge watching huge river barges simply disappearing into this impressive gorge is quite an experience.

A view from Romania's Transalpina Road

Magnificiant scenery on the Romania's Transalpina.

Our last day in Transylvania is spent on quiet back roads through tiny villages. Often it seems that we have the area to ourselves. Following a day of great rides through one of Romania's National Parks, we ease back into "modern" civilization with our overnight in Timișoara, the 2021 European Capital of Culture. It was here, in 1989, that the Romanian Revolution began. 3 days later the revolutionaries declared it the first city free of Communism in Romania. Affectionately known as "Little Vienna," Timișoara's city center is a treat for the eyes. Colorful buildings on every side of the many town squares will leave you with great memories of this, our last Romanian city.

Heading to work in Wallacia, Romania

Heading to work in Wallacia.

The very last day on the road crosses the Hungarian Plain and ends where this adventure began. The riding is easy, the roads are rather straight, and there is time to review the last two weeks, time to sort out the contrasts, to memorize the high points, and to absorb the cultural discoveries.

Join us and ride the Carpathian Mountains as they curl across Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia. Ride a little harder and add another 3 additional countries to your "been there" list. Experience traditional hospitality, discover beautiful countryside and explore historic towns. It's all a part of Beach's Transylvanian Trek .

Advice for Americans traveling abroad

According with U.S. government the following advice are to be followed:

Before you go

  • Confirm your passport is valid for 6 months from when you think your trip will end. Don’t get stranded.
  • Get comprehensive travel insurance to cover you and your gear. Get insurance that’s right for you and covers your activities in the places you’ll go. Remember, regardless of how healthy and fit you are, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.
  • Consider your physical and mental health. Get advice from your doctor if you’re unsure.
  • See your doctor or travel clinic 8 weeks before you go for a basic health check
  • Check if your medication is legal and available in the places you’re going. Take enough of your prescribed medicines to last the whole trip. Carry copies of your prescription and a letter from your doctor.
  • Tell your bank you’re travelling and check if your cards will work. Have several payment options.
  • If you’ll drive overseas check out the local traffic laws and practices. You’re likely to need an International Driving Permit (IDP) as well as your US driver’s license.
  • Share your itinerary with friends or family members. Give them copies of your passport

Travel insurance

Holidays don’t always go as planned. If you’re going overseas, travel insurance is as important as a passport. Without it, you or your family could suffer financially if things go wrong. No matter who you are, where you’re going and what you’re doing, get insurance.

Travel insurance is especially important if you need medical assistance. Healthcare overseas can be very expensive. Most countries won’t give you free care, or subsidies the cost of your care. You, or your insurer, must usually pay full price.

Alan T. – March 22, 2019 :

It was a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ ride, with fabulous scenery, mountains and sea, twisties and sweepers; a meticulously researched and tightly choreographed journey through the back roads and byways of the Balkans. If I had to choose highlights, they would be (1) The Dalmatian/Adriatic Coast with the three crown jewels of Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik (2) Kotor Fjord in Montenegro (3) the Danube Gorge (4) the Transalpina and Transfagarasan Highways and (5) rural Romania, especially Transylvania and the Southern Carpathians. Prague, known as the “City of a 100 Spires” is the capital of Czech Republic and a major economic and cultural centre, right in the heart of Europe. The city boasts of numerous historic landmarks, churches, museums, bridges and the famous Prague astronomical clock that has featured in Indian as well as world cinema, ever so often. The city centre was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1992 and it is from this fascinating city and the creator of the famous Pilsner, that we will begin our 10-day voyage through the Bohemian, Alpine and Hungarian landscapes.

On the first day, you will fly into Prague by the forenoon, be transferred to your hotels and get time to settle down or explore the surroundings if you wish to.

Day 2 begins with a wonderful city tour where you get to take a peek into history and explore the popular sites in town. We shall take the famous walk from the castle to the city square via Charles Bridge. This will be followed by a ride briefing and in the evening we will be collecting your bikes for the upcoming journey.

Today, we commence our ride with a 372 kms ride to Salzburg- the fourth-largest city of Austria and the birthplace of the 18th century composer, Mozart. The Salzburg city centre is also on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Enroute we would pass by Cesky Krumlov, often referred as the most beautiful small town of Europe. This is a protected heritage town - and we will have to walk it.

The ride from Prague to Salzburg through the eastern Alps and the picturesque Bavarian countryside is indeed a treat. The charming palaces, riverside villages and the beautiful forest expanses make this a memorable ride in more ways than one.

Overnight stay is in a village on the outskirts of Salzburg.

The “City of Music” and the “City of Dreams” awaits us and today we will be riding about 400 kms from Salzburg to Vienna, the beautiful and charming capital of Austria. Apart from being popular as a leading musical city, full of rich Baroque architecture, Vienna is also host to numerous international organizations like the UN and the OSCE.

The route from Salzburg to Vienna passes through scenic, curvy mountain roads overlooking gorgeous shimmering lakes, and vineyards & fruit orchards along the brilliant blue Danube river as well: all of which are perfect postcard shots. Once you reach Vienna, you will have the evening free to explore the city on your own and indulge in the capital’s cultural and culinary delights.

Day 5 is reserved for a city tour where you can witness pristine palaces, visit castles and soak in more of the city’s history and stories. Once known as the “Queen of the Danube”, the city consists of two parts- Buda and Pest which are situated on either side of the Danube river and are connected by numerous bridges. Today would be a good mix of highways and country roads. And our stopover for lunch is at a very beautiful lakeside hamlet of Tihany.

Healing thermal waters, spectacular architecture and a buzzing nightlife, make Budapest a wholesome tourist destination and it would be a pity if we continued our tour without exploring the nightlife here.

So, Day 7 is meant for you to rest and gear up for an eventful evening where you could do club hopping, eating and dancing!

Our next destination, is the second largest city of Poland, beckons and today we ride 400 kms to the culturally rich town of Krakow. The Best Motorcycle Touring Destinations

Welcome to the Best Motorcycle Touring Destinations of 2024. This guide lists our top selection of countries to go on a motorcycle tour this year. You’ll find a bunch of awesome routes based on our personal travels, why they’re so good and what you need to know about riding there…

The Best Motorcycle Touring Destinations

Motorcycle Touring Destinations 2024

What is a motorcycle tour.

Motorcycle touring simply means to go on a motorcycle trip. However, the term ‘touring’ also tends to lean towards and focus more on tarmac road trips – as opposed to ‘adventure’ trips, which tend to lean more towards a mixture of road and off-road riding. So, we’ve specifically written this article with great road routes in mind. If you’d prefer a mix of gravel and off-road riding, check out the Best Adventure Motorcycle Destinations   instead.

How to get to these destinations?

The countries we’ve picked can be accessed via flying in and renting a bike, joining an organised or self-guided tour, or taking your own bike there. We’ll cover your options in each section below.

How and why did we pick these destinations?

We chose the following countries for 2024 based on our own personal experiences riding motorcycles there. We’ve ridden there, had an incredible time and reckon you will too. We also based the decisions on ease of access and current prices. Of course, there are hundreds of places, roads, routes and countries that can be added to this list – it’s by no means exhaustive. These are just a few of our top picks for this year and we will add to the list regularly and update it each year.

For more info on other countries including ride reports and our travel guides, check out the Destinations page.

The Best Countries for a Motorcycle Tour in 2024

The Best Motorcycle Touring Destinations

Best route: Porto and the Douro River.

The route: We recommend starting in Porto, head for the Douro River and chase it along the legendary National 222. You’ll find insanely twisty mountain and forest roads alongside the river that lead deeper into the country, up and over gargantuan dams and along sun drenched vineyards.

How to get there: Either ride your own bike to Portugal, pay a motorcycle transport company, fly to Porto and rent a motorcycle or join a guided or self-guided tour.

Rentals and tours: Portugal makes it easy to rent a bike or join an organised tour. It completely depends on how long you’ve got, what you want to see and how you like to ride. If you’re strapped for time and want everything pre-arranged, we’d opt for a self-guided tour. A company will book all your hotels in advance and give you a loaded GPS with daily routes to each hotel already plotted out. All you have to do is turn up and ride.

Taking your own bike:  Taking your own bike into Portugal is also very easy. If you’re from the UK or Europe, then it’s worthwhile. You will have a long ride down through France and Spain though. If you’re strapped for time, it may be quicker and cheaper to have your bike transported there.  Moving Motorcycles   has a weekly outbound service to Gibraltar.

Why it’s so good: Portugal is both on this touring list and on the best adventure motorcycle destinations list. And that’s because it’s a slice of motorcycling paradise. It has something for everyone from adventurous off-road routes cutting their way through the countryside to endless twisty black top roads that weave and carve their way up and over mountains, through forests, along gorgeous rivers and chase the coast and sparkling rivers. You can easily stick to asphalt in Portugal as it has some of the best road riding in Europe.

Portugal is also very easy to access and cheap to get to and from, making it an ideal country for a motorcycle tour.

We headed to Porto for our honeymoon, rented a KTM 790 Adventure as part of a self-guided tour and headed off to explore one of the most romantic spots in Europe – the gorgeous wine vineyards of the Douro River. Delicious food and wine, wonderful people and gorgeous towns. You’ve got to be careful here, it’s easy to stay way too long.

riding a motorbike in canadian rockies

Best route: Western Canada.

The route: The route starts in Vancouver, BC and heads up to Alberta, the Icefields Parkway, onto Mount Robson and loops back around via Kamloops to Vancouver.

How to get there: Get to Vancouver with your own motorcycle or fly in and rent one or join a tour.

Rentals and tours: Renting a motorcycle in Vancouver is easy and so is joining a guided motorcycle tour. Which you choose depends on how much time you have and how you like to ride. We have a dedicated guide on how to rent and our recommended companies below.

Taking your own bike: Unless you live in Canada or the USA, taking your own bike to Canada just to ride this loop is going to be very time consuming and expensive. But it can be done if you want to ship your motorcycle there. Visit our recommended shipping companies page for more info.

Why it’s so good: Riding a motorcycle on in Western Canada is unbelievable. British Columbia and Alberta are serene, unspoilt and brimming with wildlife, incredible views and some of the most intensely beautiful nature in the world. Slinging a leg over a saddle and heading into the Canadian Rockies will be one of the most memorable rides of your life and needs to be right at the top of your bucket list.

Specifically, the Icefields Parkway will make your jaw drop onto your handlebars. Glaciers and pristine blue water line the roadside, long stretches of asphalt lead to the highest mountain in the Rockies and bears and moose cross the road in front of you. It’s a beautiful place to ride and you’ll love it.

More info: For more info on joining a tour, renting and our ride through Canada, check out the below guides.

Motorcycle Travel Tasmania

Best route: Tasmania island loop.

The route: The route starts in Devonport and can either go clockwise or anti-clockwise around the country. The main points to hit are Stanley, Zeehan, Queenstown, Gordon Damn, Hobart, Bruny Island and Binalong Bay.

How to get there: If you’re coming from Australia with your own motorcycle you will need to get the ferry from Geelong or you can fly to the island and rent.

Rentals and tours: Unless you already have a motorcycle in Australia, renting a bike or joining a tour in Tasmania is the way to go. You can then bypass the rough 10-hour ferry crossing from Geelong, fly to Tasmania, pick up your bike and go.

Taking your own bike: To get your motorcycle to Tasmania you will need to cross the Bass Strait on the Spirit of Tasmania Ferry from Geelong in Australia. There are regular sailings, but book in advance. The crossing is around 10 hours and you can ride your bike on and off the boat.

Why it’s so good: Tasmania is wild, unpredictable and raw. There are incredible off-road routes slicing through the island, but you can ride spectacular tarmac roads all day long for weeks on end here and not scratch the surface. The twisty black stuff weaves through ancient forests, up and over mountains and along rugged coastlines. Penguins waddle across the beaches, platypuses swim in rivers, old gold mining towns serve up delicious tea, cakes and pies and you’ll want to stay just keep exploring.

And you will not be alone. Tasmania is an Australian motorcyclist mecca. You’ll find packs of cruisers, adventure bike riders, tourers, enduro riders and sports bikes enjoying this incredible little island at the end of the world. It’s far away from pretty much everywhere else on earth, but it’s riding is like nowhere else on the planet.

More info: For more info on joining a tour, renting and our ride through Tasmania check out the below guides.

British Isles Motorcycle Tour:

Best route: United Kingdom tour

The route: You’re spoilt for choice in the UK. It’s a small country but there are hundreds if not thousands of spectacular routes packed into England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. So, we suggest checking out our Six Best Routes in the UK article to help pick your next motorcycle tour.

How to get there: If you’re already in the UK, then these routes are easily accessible. From Europe you’ll need to use the Channel Tunnel or ferry and from further afield, it makes sense to fly in and rent or join a tour.

Rentals and tours: There are some fantastic motorcycle tour operators in the UK and you can rent or join a guided tour in England, Wales, Scotland Northern Ireland with ease.

Taking your own bike: Assuming you’re already in the UK, then it’s easy riding to these routes. If you’re coming from Europe you can transport your motorcycle using a van service or use international shipping if you’re coming from outside of Europe.

Why it’s so good: Even though the UK is small, our roads and routes are world class. Sure, there’s a fair bit of riding to link them up, but once you take them on you’ll love them. Some of our top picks are: the epic North Coast 500, Snake Pass, Black Mountain Pass, the Antrim Coast, Cheddar Gorge and Snowdonia.

Where you ride and which routes you take on depend on your timeframe and the time of year you’re touring. Have a read through our UK guides for more info on UK ride reports.

Motorcycle Travel Croatia

Best route: The Croatian coastline

The route: Ride the Croatian coastline along the sublime Adriatic Sea from Zagreb to Dubrovnik.

How to get there: Croatia borders Slovenia, Hungary, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro. You can also use a ferry service from Italy.

Rentals and tours: Croatia has plenty of excellent motorcycle rental and tour companies to choose from offering a wide range of bikes.

Taking your own bike: Riding your own motorcycle from Europe to Croatia is easy and straightforward. Another option for riders from the UK is to have your bike transported there. Moving Motorcycles has a weekly return transport service between the UK and Ljubljana, Slovenia (one hour from the Croatian border).

Why it’s so good: Croatia sits at the top of the touring list for European riders because of its awesome roads, the stunning Adriatic coastline, gorgeous scenery, mountains, lakes, islands, friendly people, beautiful architecture and delicious cuisine.

But one of its absolute best highlights is the coastal road down towards Dubrovnik – one of the world’s most perfectly preserved medieval cities. Have a read of our Motorcycle Travel Guide: Croatia as it’s packed with info on this route as well as a selection of Croatia’s best riding roads.

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Hungary late Wednesday, the final stop on his five-day European tour, where he's expected to finalize a number of agreements with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán that will deepen China's economic footprint in the region.

Xi is set to spend two nights in the Hungarian capital Budapest where he will meet with Orbán and Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok. Talks will center on future Chinese investments in the Central European country, which has courted deep economic ties with Beijing even as mainstream European leaders have pursued more protectionist policies to limit its reach on the continent.

Orbán, a nationalist populist whose illiberal policies have pushed him to the fringes of the European Union, made his country the first in the 27-member bloc to participate in Xi’s signature Belt and Road Initiative . Hungary has straddled a middle ground between its membership in the EU and NATO and a willingness to establish diplomatic and trade relationships with autocratic governments outside those groupings.

Hungary’s foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó, told a news conference on Monday that Xi and Hungarian officials would sign at least 16 bilateral agreements during the visit, Xi’s first to the country as president.

Szijjártó called the visit “historic,” and pointed out that China had provided more foreign investment to Hungary than any other country in 2023. He added that some of the agreements to be signed would involve expansion of Belt and Road in Hungary, and could include investments in infrastructure and energy.

Xi’s arrival in Budapest came after a two-day visit to Serbia’s capital Belgrade, where he signed an agreement on building a “shared future” with the Balkan country which, like Hungary, is considered friendly to Russia's Vladimir Putin.

China has claimed neutrality in the Ukraine conflict, but has refused to call the Russian assault an invasion and has been accused of bolstering Russia’s military capacity. Hungary has condemned the Russian invasion but threatened to block EU sanctions against Moscow and refused to provide Kyiv with military support.

Xi and Orbán are likely to discuss the war in Ukraine, Hungary's neighbor to the east. Hungary’s government has vocally urged China to take a leading role in brokering peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, and expressed its support for a China-proposed peace plan .

Before Xi's arrival on Wednesday, a number of demonstrators gathered in central Budapest to protest his visit and call for autonomy for Tibet, which lies under Chinese control.

Tibor Hendrey, a representative for the Tibet Aid Society, said that doing business with China is important for Hungary's economy, but highlighted the dangers of a relationship with a country with a spotty democratic and human rights records.

“We need a good relationship with a great empire, that's not a problem. The problem is that China has a completely different culture, a completely different approach to human rights," Hendrey said. "I feel that they want to export this kind of thinking here to Hungary, and that the Hungarian government is willing to accept that.”
