Stressful experience with the foreign health insurance but eventually resolved

I had Swisscare with ERV previously and switched to HanseMerkur. The experience so far has been really stressful for me :/. I have been trying to contact someone for more than a month to arrange for payment for a surgery and was not able to reach anyone. It is now only a few days before the surgery, and I am stuck potentially paying the entire bill out of my own pocket. The customer service people were friendly and maybe they are just overworked or understaffed but this has really been a bad experience and I regret switching from ERV :/. Update 18.06.2024: I just want to mention some good news. It seemed there was a miscommunication between the hospital and the clinic which caused this stressful delay. As I mentioned before, I had no issue with the staff (the issue was just the communication and being able to reach someone in general, which still remains my only criticism now as it is really challenging to reach someone on the phone still). The staff member processed my claim thoroughly. Now I think the issue is hopefully resolved and I am satisfied with the outcome.

User-friendly, fast, effective

We unfortunately needed to cancel our 3-week family trip to Asia due to medical reasons. The process with HanseMerkur travel cancellation insurance was seamless from start to finish. We could enter all details about the trip, the reasons, etc. via a guided online tool. There I could also upload all the necessary receipts. I expected the process to be lengthy with all kinds of questions, however, within a week (!) I heard back that my claim had been processed and they have wired me the money. I must say that I was very diligent in uploading all the documents and also preparing a nice overview of all costs and cancellations, which probably made there job easer. But still, I am very impressed by the user friendliness, the speed and the professional execution of my claim.

Customer service can be improved

Worst customer service ever. I sent them a bill 2 month ago, and an email to ask for the status 1.5 month later. Got no answer. I have been trying to call since then. Today they finally answered the phone (0: my 3rd attempt ttoday)Then they put me on hold. I have now been on hold for 80 minutes. Great. Update: I have re-sent you all the information you requested by email to your trustpilot address yesterday. Will be happy to share if some positive outcome comes out of this. Update 2: My issue was swiftly solved, thank you!

slow on the refund but ultimately paid.

A bit slow on the refund, but ultimately received all of it. My mom came to Germany and had her luggage lost for several days. We claimed 500 euro for extra expenses related to clothing and hygiene. Refund took maybe 3 months

I can only suggest to take this insurance….

I have unfortunately observed that this insurance got a bad reviews. I must however confirm that my hundred percent experience with this insurance has been excellent. I have two running insurances, the numbers as follows: 803906016 802918713 Starting from creating the insurance, understanding the contracts, as well as in case of trouble contacting the people the whole experience has been until now excellent all the time. The service has been friendly, which is not self understood as usual working with different insurances. I have many experiences with different companies , but this one has been excellent.

Hanse Merkur Health, very bad

I have been health insured at Hanse Merkur since February. I am covered in dental and health insurance. Very poor service. Several bills were declined, so I had to call to confirm, some were then payed out, some not. The latest dental cleaning one was declined as well, then revised to be payed. Waiting for the refund for the 3rd week now. My high blood pressure medication was declined despite being payed out correctly in previous instances. The call center people are at least trying to be helpful, but generally a very poor system.

Travel insurance not recommendable

I've had the travel insurance from Hanse Merkur (young travellers) since 2021. Sometimes it took them a while, but eventually they responded and covered the medical expenses guaranteed by the insurance. Ever since I've renewed the contract this year, however, my experience with them has been very bad. They don't check my damage reports at all, but just flat out reject it, claiming it is a medical check-up even though it is a treatment (and as such should be covered). I've been trying to get an answer from them for months, providing them with all the necessary information over and over again, without any success. I would not recommend them.

Bad customer service

Got a long term travel insurance from HanseMerkur. Gladly had to use it only one time so far with no issues. Had to go to a hospital again, a month ago. Sent them the bill right away at the same day. They state in their policy that a refund can take up to two weeks. After that time I contacted them again and asked for the state of my request. That was again two weeks ago and haven’t heard from them since. One month without reply is very bad customer service.

I wish I had stick to my old insurance

I wish I had stick to my old insurance I had Swisscare international students insurance for 3 years. I was perfectly happy with them and in December 2023 I got an offer where I could switch to HM insurance. The offer sounded great so I did. However now I regret it. With Swisscare the claims were processed within 2 weeks and I got my reimbursement back the following week. With HM it take AGES to get your claim processed and one of my claim was completely lost. I sent the claim a month ago and still did not hear a thing. It is hard to contact them, hard to get answers and emails often end up in spam. The sheer fact that I have to remind and follow up on my claims is bizarre. If not for the fact that I am soon graduating I would switch back to Swisscare.

Hanse Merkur = bad travel insurance

I am a student in DE and have Hanse Merkur travel insurance. I filed two claims for medication reimbursements and still haven't heard back, it's been 3 weeks! When I call you put me on hold for hours, or forward me to someone who "speaks English" who then does not in fact speak English. Please help!!!! I need my money back!!

1 Year and no reimbursement

I have made a claim, in December 2022, against my medical bill from abroad. The company still says that they need to confirm with the practitioner in the treatment country. It has been nearly one year but they are only making excuses not to pay my bills. Verena from the Hanshand overSocial-Media-Team promised me 2 time (in April 2023 and August 2023) that I will get reimbursement soon but only empty promises. Stay away from this company it’s a big headache

Worst insurance ever!!

Worst insurance ever!!! How I regret changing from public to private. I pay almost 300eur a month for this insurance and every time I go to the doctor I have to pay for everything myself. I submitted so many medical bills for 2023, bills from the Hausärzte, and blood work that I have to do often because of my autoimmune disease and they paid for NOTHING! then what is the point of having this insurance???

Where is Customer Support?

Why is it so difficult to reach someone from Customer Support? Recurring emails, calls, all without success to get basic things answered. Getting kicked out automatically trying to get a hold of someone by phone whilst not offering a waiting list seems a bit weird no ('everyone is busy, try later - bye')?!

Dear Mr. Dieperink, we regret that you weren't satisfied with your experience. We would like an opportunity to make this up to you. Happy customer, keep it up guys

Used the expat insurance for the max. duration possible and sad I can't extend any longer. All my claims (except. a CPAP I required after diagnosed with medium-severe case of sleep apnea) have been covered without second guessing or any troubles. If I move back to Germany and decide to go abroad again, I will choose HM again!

Hallo Micha, thank you for your appraisal, this is nice to hear. I will forward your positive feedback to my colleagues. Best wishes Lina from the HanseMerkur Social-Media-Team

Just thankful

Before my trip I had to get an insurance. I chose the yearly abroad insurance for 17 Euro. I forgot to cancel it after my trip, but then I flew to South Africa where I got very sick and had to go to the hospital. To my amazemnt, Hanse Mekrur covered ALL the cost. It was more then 600 Euro. For the 17 Euro insurance which I forgot to cancell. I will be forever grateful and can only recommend the insurance company.

I am customer of HanseMerkur since…

I am customer of HanseMerkur since 2021. HanseMerkur clearing bills is super Annoying. They dont clear fee bills untill you follow up a lot, they dont give proper acknowledgements in the process of clearing bills. Support is very rude for Expats as their english support is bare minimal. You to wait many hours or days to speak with english rep. Cost wise HanseMerkur is pretty decent and also they provide discount if you are healthy. Thanks god TrustPilot is helping in such situations.

Prepare for a nightmare.

Like many other reviewers here, I have been after my compensation for a medical emergency abroad that happened 14 months ago. There have been months of unanswered messages, and the Lady handling my case has NOT ONCE returned my calls, she's never at her desk. Finally a few weeks ago they gave me an update, saying that it would take even longer, no explanation given why. The hospital has sent my case to a collection agency and my name has been tarnished. I am now in the process of contacting my lawyer and starting a new nightmare. Luckily I have everything properly documented and noted. Bottomline: I should've read the reviews before choosing this company. The rating says it all. STAY AWAY

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Did you know? Facts about international health insurance

International health insurance: why have it.

Are you working abroad for a few months, completing a semester abroad or planning a longer holiday? With international health insurance, you are covered for up to 364 days against treatment costs in the event of illness. It is particularly advisable to have travel health insurance outside the EU, as doctors and hospitals usually do not accept the Austrian e-card. As treatment costs abroad are often much higher than in Austria, you can quickly incur high costs, especially for inpatient stays. Save your travel funds and book our robust international health insurance from HanseMerkur.

What benefits are included?

Our international health insurance reimburses outpatient and inpatient medical costs for stays of up to one year. This also includes dental treatment, urgent operations and ambulance transport. If you have to return home early, we will refund the partial premium for the unused days. For even more comprehensive protection, we recommend our Premium plan with additionally insured events and higher reimbursement sums. Alternatively, you can book optional liability, accident and travel assistance .

Our savings tip

Do you travel several times a year and not longer than 62 days? Then we recommend our annual international health insurance for worldwide travel destinations – it is often worth taking out for as few as 2 trips per year. If you would like to be even more comprehensively protected, we advise you to take out our annual travel protection including return travel insurance, delay protection and liability insurance.

Great location, in the heart of Moscow, set a short distance of Red Square and theaters, really nice and clean rooms, free wifi, spa facilities, but the thing that makes this such a good place to stay are the staff. All the people are incredibly helpful, friendly and generous with their time, help and advice. Breakfast was pretty good with different choice.

Very bad room service

Muzaffar Couples - 11/10/2023 Confirmed reviews ALL

Positive: Very good location, absolutely amazing stuff on Recieption, room cleanness very good. Negative, which influences to overall score: We asked for breakfast to the room. Ordered continental breakfast. They bring us only mains in very bad looking. And forgot about other additions which were shown in menu. When I asked personal to bring other additions, they sent us two slices of toaster bread, but in menu it says assorted bread basket and finally they late.

Dear Mr. S., Thank you for your time and appreciation of our hotel. We take the feedback of our dear guests very seriously, as it helps us to reach new heights of improving the service provided, and we are very sorry that you have negative impressions. A letter has been sent to your personal email, we hope for your response. With best wishes and hope for new meetings at the hotel, Sofya Romanyuk, Guest Service & Project Manager

17 Top Tourist Attractions in Moscow

By Alex Schultz · Last updated on May 4, 2024

The capital of Russia is an incredible place to explore. Visitors to Moscow come away spellbound at all the amazing sights, impressed at the sheer size and grandeur of the city. Lying at the heart of Moscow, the Red Square and the Kremlin are just two of the must-see tourist attractions; they are the historical, political and spiritual heart of the city – and indeed Russia itself.

A fascinating city to wander around, stunning cathedrals, churches, and palaces lie side-by-side with bleak grey monuments and remains from the Soviet state. In addition to its plethora of historical and cultural tourist attractions, Moscow is home to world-class museums, theaters and art galleries.

Renowned for its performing arts, fantastic ballets and amazing circus acts, catching a show while in Moscow is a must. The wealth of brilliant restaurants, trendy bars, and lively nightlife means there is something for everyone to enjoy.

17. Tsaritsyno Palace

Tsaritsyno Palace

Once the summer residence of Catherine the Great, the stunning Tsaritsyno Palace is now a museum-reserve. The architecture is magnificent and there is a lovely park surrounding it for visitors to explore.

Located in the south of Moscow, the palace was commissioned in 1775 and recent renovations mean its lavish interior looks better than ever before with its elegant halls and beautiful staircases.

The exhibits on display look at the life of the empress as well as the history of Tsaritsyno itself. The huge palace grounds are also home to some other delightful buildings with the elegant opera house and wonderful brickwork of the Small Palace being particularly impressive to gaze upon.

VDNKh

Starting out in 1935 as the ‘All-Union Agricultural Exhibition’, VDNKh has slowly morphed over the years into the fascinating open-air museum of today. Remarkably, over 400 buildings can now be found within its confines.

The huge park complex has numerous pavilions representing former Soviet republics on show, such as those of Armenia and Turkmenistan and the distinctive architecture of each of the buildings is always interesting to gaze upon. In addition to this there is the fascinating Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics which is dedicated to space exploration and the fun Moskvarium aquarium even offers you the chance to swim with dolphins.

With lots of eateries scattered about and numerous entertainment options such as horse-riding and zip-lining, there is something for everyone to enjoy; the Friendship of Nations fountain truly is wonderful.

15. Kremlin Armoury

Kremlin Armoury

One of the oldest museums in the city, the Kremlin Armoury has a wealth of treasures; highlights include the ornate Grand Siberian Railway egg, the historic Cap of Monomakh and the stunning Imperial Crown of Russia which often has a crowd of tourists around it, jostling to take a photo.

Once the royal armory, there are loads of fascinating objects on display. Perusing the many sabers, jewelry, armor and more is as interesting as it is educational and entertaining and the swords are so finely crafted that you’ll almost wish you could pick up one and wield if yourself.

Established in 1851, the museum is situated in the Moscow Kremlin.

14. GUM Department Store

GUM Department Store

Standing for ‘Main Universal Store’ in Russian, GUM is stunning. Its wonderful skylights and beautiful facades mean it doesn’t look out of place alongside its illustrious neighbors on Red Square.

With over 200 shops, boutiques and upmarket eateries inside, it is a shopaholic’s heaven and concerned partners will be glad to find more affordable options alongside luxury brands such as Dior and Prada.

The main department store in the city, GUM was opened in 1893. The stunning architecture makes it well worth a visit even if shopping isn’t your thing.

13. Moscow Metro

Moscow Metro

It’s not often that public transport looks like a work of art. So many stops on the Moscow Metro will astound visitors with their beauty and elegance.

Decked in marble and with frescoes covering the walls, the stations are amazing to gaze upon and are part of one of the longest metro systems in the world, with the first stations opened in 1935.

Using the metro is the quickest and easiest way to get around Moscow and braving the crowds of commuters is well worth it for the beauty all around you.

12. Arbat Street

Arbat Street

An elegant yet lively street, Arbat is full of impressive architecture and was once a popular place to live for aristocrats, artists, and academics.

A historic place, it is down Arbat Street that Napoleon’s troops are said to have headed on their way to capture the Kremlin.

Nowadays, there are many cafes, restaurants, and shops, as well as various monuments and statues to former residents such as Alexander Pushkin who was reputed to be a lover of the Russian Empress due to his massive influence in court.

Drenched in history, the Novodevichy Convent is located in a striking building that was once a fortress. This captivating place is well worth visiting when in Moscow.

Founded in 1524, the convent houses four cathedrals; Smolensk Cathedral is the undoubted highlight due to its delightful 16th-century frescoes.

Wandering around the grounds is like stepping back in time. The Novodevichy Cemetery is where many famous leaders of the Soviet Union are buried, such as Yeltsin and Khrushchev.

10. Pushkin Museum

Pushkin Museum

Despite its name, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts actually has no connection at all to the famous poet other than that it was named in his honor after his death. A delight to visit, its extensive collection focuses on European art with masterpieces by Botticelli, Rembrandt, and van Gogh all featuring.

Sculptures, graphic art, paintings and more can be found in its beautiful galleries; various sections look at themes and epochs such as the Renaissance, the Dutch Golden Age, and Byzantine art.

Among the many highlights are the clownish characters which can be found in Cezanne’s Fastnacht (Mardi Gras) and the twirling ballerinas who look so elegant in Degas’ Blue Dancers. Picasso’s Young acrobat on a Ball is also well worth checking out for its interesting use of shapes and colors.

9. Christ The Savior Cathedral

Christ The Savior Cathedral

This gorgeous Russian Orthodox cathedral is located on the banks of the Moskva River, just a stone’s throw away from the Kremlin.

The church as it stands today was consecrated in 2000, as the original church that stood here was destroyed on the command of Josef Stalin in 1931 due to the anti-religious campaign.

With its delightful golden dome, spires and dazzling white facades, the Christ the Savior Cathedral is stunning. The interior is just as captivating to wander around, with its beautifully tiled floors and impressive altar.

8. Lenin Mausoleum

Lenin Mausoleum

Opened to the public in 1924, Lenin’s Mausoleum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Moscow. The red granite structure is located at the heart of the city in Red Square.

Lenin’s embalmed body lies in a glass sarcophagus; it is a somewhat eerie experience walking past the former leader of the Soviet Union but is well worth doing as you understandably can’t do it anywhere else in the world.

After visiting the mausoleum, head to the Kremlin wall right next to it for more graves of important communist figures such as Stalin and Brezhnev.

7. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery

Home to the most extensive and impressive collection of Russian fine art in the world, the State Tretyakov Gallery is definitely worth visiting when in Moscow for the wealth of amazing art pieces that it has on display.

Having started out as the private art collection of the Tretyakov brothers, there are now over 130,000 exhibits. Highlights include the iconic Theotokos of Vladimir which you will almost certainly recognise despite probably not knowing the name and Rublev’s Trinity which is considered to be one of highest achievements in Russian art.

An absolute must for art lovers, the State Tretyakov Gallery will delight visitors with all that is has to offer.

6. Kolomenskoye

Kolomenskoye

Once a royal estate, Kolomenskoye is now a museum-reserve and lies a few kilometers outside of the city center. A captivating place to visit, there is a plethora of history on show and the site overlooks the Moskva River.

Consisting of four historical sites, there are extensive gardens for visitors to explore, as well as loads of interesting old buildings, the former village of Kolomenskoye itself and the impressive Palace of the Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich – once considered the Eighth Wonder of the World by contemporaries.

Among the many stunning sights, it is the brilliantly white Ascension Church that is the undoubted highlight – dating back to 1532.

5. Gorky Park

Gorky Park

Lying alongside the Moskva River, the huge Gorky Park is a lovely place to visit. Its extensive gardens are home to numerous cultural institutions and visitors should definitely check out the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and while the eclectic exhibits may not always feature such incredible sights as a balloon-covered rider on a zebra; they certainly always succeed in pushing back the boundaries of art.

Pop-up exhibitions and festivals can be found from time to time in the park itself and there is an open-air theatre and numerous eateries alongside a plethora of leisure activities.

Whether it’s cycling, table tennis or yoga that you are after or beach volleyball and rowing, Gorky Park certainly has it. In winter, there is a huge ice rink for visitors to enjoy.

4. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the main theater in the country. The amazing opera and ballet performances it has put on over the centuries go a long way in explaining Russia’s rich history of performing arts.

While the Bolshoi Ballet Company was established in 1776, the theater itself was opened in 1825. The glittering, six-tier auditorium is lavishly and decadently decorated; it is a fitting setting for the world-class performances that take place on its stage.

Spending a night watching a performance of such classics as The Nutcracker or Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theatre is sure to be a memorable experience and the beauty all around you only adds to the sense of occasion.

3. Moscow Kremlin

Moscow Kremlin

This famously fortified complex is remarkably home to five palaces and four cathedrals and is the historic, political and spiritual center of the city. The Kremlin serves as the residence for the country’s president. It has been used as a fort, and this fact is made clear by its sheer size. The Kremlin’s outer walls were built in the late 1400s.

Under Ivan III, better known as Ivan the Great, the Kremlin became the center of a unified Russian state, and was extensively remodeled. Three of the Kremlin’s cathedrals date to his reign that lasted from 1462-1505. The Deposition Church and the Palace of Facets were also constructed during this time. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was built in 1508. It is the tallest tower at the Kremlin with a height of 266 feet (81 meters).

Joseph Stalin removed many of the relics from the tsarist regimes. However, the Tsar Bell, the world’s largest bell, and the Tsar Cannon, the largest bombard by caliber in the world, are among the remaining items from that era. The Kremlin Armory is one of Moscow’s oldest museums as it was established more than 200 years ago. Its diamond collection is impressive.

The Kremlin’s gardens – Taynitsky, Grand Kremlin Public and Alexander – are beautiful. The Kremlin has also served as the religious center of the country, and there is a tremendous number of preserved churches and cathedrals here. The collections contained within the museums include more than 60,000 historical, cultural and artistic monuments. Those who enjoy the performing arts will want to consider attending a ballet or concert at the State Kremlin Palace. Completed in 1961, it is the only modern building in the Kremlin.

2. Red Square

Red Square

Lying at the heart of Moscow, Red Square is the most important and impressive square in the city. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions due to its wealth of historical sights and cultural landmarks.

Drenched in history, the huge square is home to incredible sights such as the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Mausoleum, among others. Consequently, it is not to be missed when in Moscow as it really is home to the city’s most stunning monuments.

It is here that many important moments in Russian history took place; the former marketplace has hosted everything from Tsar’s coronations and public ceremonies to rock concerts and Soviet military parades. Wandering around the massive square is a humbling experience and undoubtedly one of the highlights the city has to offer.

1. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Saint Basil's Cathedral

Located in the impressive Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral is gorgeous; its delightful spires appear as if out of a fairytale. The most recognizable building in the country, the cathedral is very much a symbol of Russia. No visit to Moscow is complete without having taken in its unique and distinctive features.

Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral’s construction in the mid-16th century, and legend holds that Ivan put out the architect’s eyes so that he would be unable to build another cathedral more glorious than St. Basil’s. Designed to resemble the shape of a bonfire in full flame, the architecture is not only unique to the period in which it was built but to any subsequent period. For various reasons, both Napoleon and Stalin wanted to destroy the cathedral but fortunately did not succeed.

Known for its various colors, shapes and geometric patterns, St. Basil’s Cathedral houses nine different chapels that are all connected by a winding labyrinth of corridors and stairways. On the lower floor, St. Basil’s Chapel contains a silver casket bearing the body of St. Basil the Blessed.

Throughout the cathedral are many beautiful murals, frescoes, wooden icons and other art works and artifacts. Outside the cathedral is a lovely garden with the bronze Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who rallied an all-volunteer Russian army against Polish invaders during a period of the late 16th century known as the Times of Troubles.
