Dolmabahce Palace Entrance Fee & Opening Hours (2024)

17 April 2024 by Serhat Engül

Dolmabahce Palace is a jewel located on the Bosphorus shores of Istanbul. The palace, which started operating in 1856, was the place where the sultans lived in the last years of the Ottoman Empire.

Topkapi Palace in Sultanahmet hosted the Ottoman sultans for nearly 400 years. However, as the shores of the Bosphorus gained importance in the 1800s, the Ottoman throne was also moved to the Dolmabahce Palace.

Dolmabahce Palace entrance fee is 1050 Turkish Liras in 2024. Museum Pass Istanbul is not valid in the palace. Dolmabahce Palace is open between 09:00 in the morning and 17:30 in the evening. This information was last updated on April 17, 2024.

If you would like to buy a skip-the-line ticket for Dolmabahce Palace , you can make a reservation for a guided group tour via this link . These online tickets can save you from waiting at the ticket booths during the spring and summer months.

So far, I have shared the information you will need most about the palace. However, in the rest of the article, you can find up-to-date tips that may be useful to you at Dolmabahce Palace.

Table of Contents

The History of Dolmabahce Palace

The history of Dolmabahce Palace begins with Sultan Abdulmecid leaving the traditional Topkapi Palace in the 19th century. A new palace was built on the shores of the Bosphorus under the influence of westernization in the Ottoman Empire .

1. Ottoman Istanbul in 19th Century

Dolmabahce Palace Museum in Istanbul Turkey

Westernization gained momentum in the Ottoman Istanbul in 19th Century . For the Ottoman people who lived in Istanbul Old City, “Europe” was in the northern bank of the Golden Horn .

Life quality in the other part of the city surpassed the Historical Peninsula after Sultan Abdulmecid left Topkapi Palace in 1856 and moved into Dolmabahce Palace, which was built in the western architectural style.

While Muslim population in the Historical Peninsula was living a modest and conservative life, Pera (Beyoglu) quarter was regarded as “Paris of the East” due to parties, balls and art events held there.

2. Beyoglu and Bosphorus

Istiklal Street was known as Pera

Beyoglu and Bosphorus became the symbols of the new lifestyle. Neo-Classical and Baroque-style buildings were built and French-style cafes and restaurants were opened in Beyoglu , which was known as “Pera” at that time.

Pera became a place where foreigners lived. French and Italian merchants (levantines) and Ottoman citizens, Greeks, Armenians and Jews created a new culture in this district. The Ottoman bureaucracy and sometimes even the Sultan himself participated in the events in the Pera district.

Foreign embassies, noble families and merchants in Pera had mansions on the shores of the Bosphorus. Thus, the shores of the Bosphorus underwent a great change in the 19th century and were filled with colorful mansions.

Observing the change in the city, Sultan Abdulmecid decided to build a new palace to replace the traditional Topkapi Palace. Thus, the construction of the magnificent Dolmabahce Palace on the Bosphorus began.

The Architecture of Dolmabahce Palace

Dolmabahce Palace Main Hall

The architecture of the Dolmabahce Palace is nothing like the previous Ottoman palaces. Especially those who visit Topkapi Palace will notice the difference between Classical Ottoman Architecture and 19th century buildings.

“Dolma” means filled or stuffed and “Bahce” means garden in Turkish lenguage. The site of the Dolmabahce Palace was obtained by filling the small bay on the Bosphorus giving the palace its name.

Chief architect Garabet Balyan managed to combine the Oriental and European styles. The lifestyle and protocol were Oriental but the architectural plan was taken from European palaces. Balyan also combined various architectural styles forming the eclectic architectural outcome.

The Palace consists of 285 rooms and 46 halls. The massive building covers an area of 25 hectares / 62 acres. There are nearly 600 unique paintings and very beautiful huge Turkish carpets specially woven for this elegant court.

The palace’s equipment implemented the highest technical standards of its age. Gas lighting and water-closets were imported from Great Britain, whereas the palaces in Europe were still lacking these features at that time. Later, electricity, a central heating system and an elevator were installed.

Dolmabahce Palace Entrance Fee 2024

Dolmabahce Palace entrance fee is 1050 Turkish Liras as of 2024. The combined ticket covers the Main Building, the Harem Rooms and the Palace Collections sections of the palace. The information on the ticket price was last updated on April 17, 2024

It should also be noted that in the past, separate tickets were sold for each section of Dolmabahce Palace. As an alternative to these, there was a combined ticket covering all sections. However, as of 2024, the combined ticket became the only option.

In short, with a combined ticket, you can visit the main halls of the palace called the Selamlik (Reception) and also the Harem Rooms. Also included is the Palace Collections Museum, which contains magnificent paintings by court painters.

After receiving the ticket you will see the turnstiles at the entrance of the palace. You can get a free audio guide system from the office on the left before you pass the turnstiles.

Dolmabahce Palace Skip-The-Line Tickets

The 7-month period from April to November is Istanbul’s high tourism season. During this period, there is a long ticket queue in front of popular museums.

At some popular museums in Istanbul, you can skip the queues with the Museum Pass Istanbul . However, MUSEUM PASS is NOT VALID for this particular museum. For that reason, I recommend you to buy skip the line Dolmabahce Palace tickets in advance.

Those who have fast track tickets meet with their guides at the gate and enter with the group. So you don’t wait in line and listen to the history of the Dolmabahce Palace from a licensed tour guide.

For fast track entrance to Dolmabahce Palace, you can buy online tickets from this link . These tickets are sold with the guarantee of GetYourGuide, an international travel platform.

Dolmabahce Palace Opening Hours 2024

Dolmabahce Palace opening hours are between 9:00 in the morning and 17:30 in the evening. Please note that Dolmabahce Palace is closed on Mondays. Information on visiting hours was last updated on April 17, 2024

How to Get to The Palace?

Dolmabahce Palace is located in the district of Besiktas and right next to the stadium of the Besiktas Football Team (namely Vodafone Arena). It is very easy to get to the palace from Taksim Square and Sultanahmet , which are the most touristic districts of Istanbul.

You can use the tram to get to Dolmabahce Palace from Sultanahmet . When you take the Tram T1 from Sultanahmet Tram Station in the direction of “Kabatas”, you can get off at the last stop, Kabatas. It takes only ten minutes to walk from Kabatas Tram Station to the palace.

In order to go to Dolmabahce Palace from Taksim Square , you can take Funicular F1 to reach Kabatas in minutes. You can reach the palace in a few minutes by following the coastline from Kabatas Tram Station.

Dolmabahce Palace is a great place to get to know Ottoman Istanbul in the 19th century. Because in this period, Istanbul had undergone a great change with the effect of Westernization.

Dolmabahce Palace has an inspiring beauty both from the outside and inside. Especially the furniture, chandeliers and wall decorations in it perfectly reflect the decoration style of a period.

You can also take great Instagram photos thanks to the various fountains, statues and monumental gates in the large courtyards of the palace. In the background, there will always be a magnificent Bosphorus view.

It is recommended to visit the palace with guided tours in order to learn the history of the Palace properly and to grasp the flow of life that had continued here for many years. You can make a reservation from this link to join guided skip-the-line tours.

Does it needed Negative PCR test to visit the Palace?

25 January 2022 at 16:48

No, there is no Covid control at the entrance to mosques and museums in Istanbul. At least that’s the case with the big museums affiliated with the state, and Dolmabahce Palace is one of them. Some private museums may have a different procedure.

Serhat, thank you so much for your swift responce and useful articles!

Hello! Can we visit the palace with our dog? Thank you

11 April 2022 at 23:17

I don’t think you can visit with a dog. I have never come across anyone visiting the palace with a pet before. They probably don’t allow it. Inside the palace, there are 150-year-old carpets and priceless items.

11 May 2022 at 12:08

You need to update the ticket price. It has almost tripled now

11 May 2022 at 21:52

Hi Andrew, thanks for the warning. Yes, as of May 1, prices have changed. As far as I can see, they have combined the Palace and Harem tickets, and on top of that, there is a 50% price increase.

In fact, the issue is not only Dolmabahce Palace. There are 50 museums from Turkey on the site, and all of them need updating their ticket prices.

Although I try to keep the site up to date as much as possible, sometimes I can’t keep up because the prices change so frequently due to post-pandemic inflation.

16 May 2022 at 12:53

Yes, the prices have really shot up. I paid 300 TL a week back.

16 May 2022 at 12:57

Hello Manali, I have started to update the ticket prices of Istanbul museums on the site. Very soon, the latest entrance fees of Dolmabahce Palace will be added. Thanks for information.

16 October 2022 at 14:05

Hello! Is it possible to take amateur pictures during the visit? Thank you!

16 October 2022 at 21:32

Hi Maria, unfortunately it is forbidden to take photos indoors of the Dolmabahce Palace. But you can take pictures in the courtyards.

7 January 2023 at 10:32

Hi, is it free just to walk around the garden of this palace? ( just visiting the outside of building)

7 January 2023 at 12:42

Hi Jerry, the outer garden of Dolmabahce Palace can be entered without a ticket. But I can’t say that part is very attractive. There is only the palace cafe and ticket offices there.

The main garden of the palace, decorated with flowers and a pool, remains inside. You can’t get there without going through the ticket turnstiles.

Commissioned by Sultan Abdülmecid I in the mid-19th century, Dolmabahçe Palace was envisioned as a symbol of the Ottoman Empire’s modernization and aspirations for Westernization.

The palace was built between 1843 and 1856 under the supervision of the renowned Armenian architect Garabet Balyan and his son Nigoğayos Balyan.

Spread across an expansive area of 45,000 square meters (11 acres), the palace is adorned with intricate carvings, majestic domes, and ornate balconies.

The Ceremonial Hall, with breathtaking crystal chandeliers and sumptuous furnishings, was used for state ceremonies and receptions hosted by the sultans.

The palace served as the Ottoman sultans’ main administrative center and residence.

Six sultans lived at the Dolmabahçe Palace between 1856 and the abolition of the caliphate in 1924.

Kemal Atatürk, the founder and first president of the Turkish Republic, passed away in the Dolmabahçe Palace on November 10, 1938.

The Directorate of National Palaces has been running the Dolmabahçe as a museum since 1984.

Chandelier at Dolmabahçe Palace

The magnificent chandelier hangs resplendently from the ornate ceiling in the Ceremonial Hall of Dolmabahçe Palace.

The chandelier weighs 4.5 tons and comprises 750 lamps and 10,000 crystal pieces.

It is 36 feet high (11 meters) and 26 feet in diameter (8 meters), making it the largest Bohemian crystal chandelier in the world.

Stretching upwards towards the ceiling, its tiers of shimmering crystals catch the light and cast a mesmerizing glow throughout the hall.

The chandelier undergoes careful maintenance and preservation efforts so future generations can continue admiring its beauty.

The Dolmabahçe Palace has the world’s largest Bohemian and Baccarat crystal chandelier collection.

Dolmabahçe Palace is a highly-rated tourist attraction.

One Of The World's Best Airports For Layovers Is In An Iconic European City

I stanbul, Turkey, definitely qualifies as a once-in-a-lifetime vacation destination you don't want to miss out on . The ancient city, the largest in the country, is culturally rich and historically significant, and this  European destination is also ideal for food lovers . Given its distinct position in Europe and Asia, it's not uncommon for travelers to have a layover in Istanbul, specifically at Istanbul International Airport (IST), and while Europe has some stressful airports , IST, which opened in 2018, is also considered one of the world's best airports.

Travelers who have a layover at this distinguished airport can enjoy top-notch amenities. For example, IST is home to the Ambassador Spa & Beauty Salon, where travelers can get a massage, shower, and more. Likewise, Napzone areas exist for those who want to lie down and relax. IST also has an on-site hotel, YOTELAIR, that can conveniently be booked for at least four hours. And, of course, IST has a variety of stores where travelers can shop until they drop.

However, travelers flying with Turkish Airlines have another option. If they have a 6- to 24-hour layover at IST, they can opt for Touristanbul. This takes passengers to Istanbul's top sites, including the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Grand Bazaar, and more. Best of all, it's completely free. Interested? Here's what you need to know about Touristanbul.

The Scoop On Touristanbul

Turkish Airlines' Touristanbul offers nine different tours of Istanbul at the time of this writing. Tours occur daily via a shuttle that departs and returns to Istanbul International Airport (IST). They vary in length, so travelers can choose what's right for them depending on their layover. The shortest, the sightseeing tour, is three and a half hours, while the longest, the full-day tour, is nine and a half hours long. So, what experiences can be expected on Touristanbul? Take, for example, the sightseeing tour. The itinerary is jam-packed but includes stops at Dolmabahçe Palace (pictured) and the Bulgarian St. Stephen Church, both dating back to the 1800s.

Likewise, travelers will enjoy a Turkish breakfast — note that all meals and transportation are included with Touristanbul — and each tour will also have a guide. On Tripadvisor , one reviewer from November 2023 wrote: "We had a great experience overall with Touristanbul. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly and showed us many places in Istanbul. We took many photos and saw many sights worth seeing! We highly recommend!"

If you meet the layover qualifications for Touristanbul, you can book a tour at IST at the Touristanbul desk found at international arrivals. If you plan on doing this, apply for a tourist visa for Turkey online beforehand. Kids and solo travelers are welcome on Touristanbul, too. But this isn't the only option you should consider.

All About Stopover In Istanbul

For those unfamiliar with a stopover, think of it as an overnight excursion for your layover. With that in mind, Turkish Airlines' Stopover in Istanbul is for travelers with a layover of 20 hours or longer at IST. Economy passengers are provided a complimentary stay at a 4-star hotel; however, if they fly in from the United States, they are entitled to a 2-night stay. On the other hand, business class passengers can stay at a 5-star hotel for two or three nights if they are traveling from the U.S. Undoubtedly, this provides the perfect opportunity to explore Istanbul in a limited time frame.

Condé Nast Traveler writer Iona Brannon described her positive experience with the stopover in Istanbul program, for which she opted to stay at the 5-star Pullman İstanbul Hotel and Convention Center. Likewise, Brannon booked Airbnb Experiences, including a food and coffee tour, to fill her Istanbul itinerary.

To experience your own Stopover in Istanbul, go online and email the address listed for the country you are departing from with your flight and contact info at least 72 hours before departure. Keep in mind that this is not available to passengers from all countries, so make sure to check. Also remember to apply for a tourist visa beforehand as well. Overall, it would be an understatement to say that layovers at IST are anything but boring.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

dolmabahce palace tour

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport.
