A football trip to Liverpool and Anfield is on the top of the wish list for many European football fans. The club is one of the most popular in England and today the German coach Klopp has built a team that makes good results both in the league and in the Champions League 2017/2018. Important players in today's Liverpool are Salah, Firmino and Mané. If you want to see Liverpool play at their home turf, it is good to compare all the football trips with Liverpool FC on our site.

How do I buy a football trip to Liverpool games

For cup matches such as the League Cup or the FA Cup, tickets can be bought directly from the club's website, but in most cases it is the easiest to buy from one of the ticket vendors and travel agencies listed on this page. Many of them sell only the tickets but there are also travel agencies selling complete package deals with ticket, hotel and flight included.

Anfield has expanded its capacity to more than 54,000 spectators. You can reach the stadium by bus, taxi or foot from the town centre. Anfield is famous for its amazing atmosphere and is worth a visit no matter if it’s your favourite team or not. The most expensive match of the year is likely to be against the rivals Manchester United but it is also possible to find cheaper matches, especially cup matches or matches midweek.

About football packages with Liverpool

Liverpool FC is the most merited club in England. With eighteen League titles, seven wins in the FA Cup, eight League Cup golds, five victories in the European Cup/Champions League and three golds in the UEFA Cup, Liverpool is just ahead of Manchester United in terms of medals won.

Liverpool splits their home games into three categories. The tickets for games in category A are the most expensive, while the tickets for category C games are the cheapest. For the really big games it can be very difficult to get a hold of tickets, even if you are a member of the official fan club. The best choice is to book game tickets together with hotel and perhaps a flight in a package trip. If you really love Liverpool, you should try to get a hold of a ticket on the legendary stand called The Kop.

Liverpool may have lost some of the stardom it had during the 70’s and 80’s, but the club now seems to be on the right track again. With stars such as Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard, there is much quality. Gerrard together with Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen and Fernando Torres are some of the biggest stars in recent years.

Other things to do in Liverpool

Liverpool is not a particularly big city, and it is easy to get around on foot. Some of the attractions that you can’t miss are the cozy neighborhoods around Albert Dock, the magnificent Anglican cathedral, and the two museums called Liverpool Museum and Merseyside Maritime Museum. If you are a fan of The Beatles, then you will surely get your fill in Liverpool.

Briefly about Anfield

Few stadiums in the world are as shrouded in mystery as Anfield in Liverpool. The stadium is situated at one end of Stanley Park (the home field of Everton, Goodison Park, is at the other end), a few kilometers east of central Liverpool.

Facts about Anfield

Anfield can today hold 45,276 spectators, but the record attendance is significantly higher than that. In a FA Cup game against Wolverhampton in 1952, 61,905 people showed up. Anfield is ranked as a four star stadium by UEFA, which is slightly below world class.

Stadium History

Football of the highest level has been played at Anfield ever since 1884. It might sound strange since Liverpool FC wasn’t formed until 1892, but the fact of the matter is that Everton, which was founded in 1884, used Anfield as its home stadium initially. However, when a dispute between the club and the landlord about the rent blossomed up, Everton moved to Goodison Park. The first game that Liverpool played at Anfield was against Rotherham. They won the game with 7-1. 1893 Liverpool played its first season in the English top division. Back then, the stadium could take approximately 5,000 spectators. From the end of the 1800’s up until now, the capacity has been increased in stages. In 1906 the famous stand Spion Kop, or just The Kop, was built. In 1928 it was expanded to be able to hold over 30,000 spectators, and today the stand only consists of seats. Despite this, not many people remain seated when You’ll Never Walk Alone booms out across the stadium. Between 1963 and 1973 Anfield was greatly modernized. The old main stand was torn down completely in favor of a new one. During the 1980’s, they also started to remake all stands to be seated only. The latest modification was done in 1998 when a second section of the Anfield Road Stand was built.

Communications

If you are in Central Liverpool, Anfield is within walking distance. The stadium is in a residential area about three kilometers east of the center. There are also several bus lines that run between central Liverpool and Anfield.

Liverpool Day Trip: The Perfect 1 Day in Liverpool Itinerary

Planning a day trip to Liverpool? Great shout! This is one of my favourite cities in the UK . Although you could spend much longer, 1 day in Liverpool makes for a fantastic introduction. From the Beatles to the Titanic, Liverpool’s iconic history and connection to pop culture put it on the map. However, it’s a vibrant and cosmopolitan city in its own right. In particular, the Royal Albert Docks give the city a bright, outdoorsy feel with sea views. Since I have friends and family in Manchester , I’ve taken more than one day trip to Liverpool in the last few years. I love revisiting the same places and finding new, cool spots.

LIVERPOOL ESSENTIALS Accommodation:  Booking.com // Hostelworld Activities:  GetYourGuide Getting there: Air ( Skyscanner ) train ( Trainline ), bus ( Busbud ) Getting around: Foot / bus / Uber

When to visit Liverpool

It goes without saying that the summer months have the best weather. Liverpool is renowned for being rainy during autumn and winter but if you pack waterproof shoes and an umbrella, you’ll be fine.

Visiting out of season? Here’s what to do in Liverpool during winter

Something to note is that many of the museums and galleries are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. I’d really recommend visiting from Wednesday to Sunday to make the most of the city. Of course, if you hate crowds, avoid Liverpool at the weekend.

Getting to Liverpool

By train: this is usually the quickest way to get to Liverpool. Prices from Manchester to Liverpool Lime Street station start at £2 each way! Search for tickets on Trainline . By bus: Although buses usually take a bit longer in England , you can get super cheap tickets. Book bus tickets with Busbud . By car: Liverpool is an expensive city for parking. The most central option is Liverpool ONE shopping centre (£19 for 12 hours). If you don’t mind a walk, park along Otterspool Promenade for free and walk into town along the riverfront. It’s a few kilometers but completely flat. On a Sunday, there’s free parking on Bold Street and Rodney Street.

Getting around Liverpool

It’s easy to explore Liverpool on foot. If you’re feeling lazy, hop on a bus. Another tourist-friendly option is taking the Liverpool hop-on-hop-off bus tour .

1 day liverpool itinerary

What type of Liverpool itinerary is this?

This is a fast-paced itinerary for those exploring Liverpool for the first time. I’d recommend arriving as early as you can as there’s quite a bit to cover. Customise this 1 day Liverpool itinerary by choosing the museums and galleries you’re most interested in and set your own pace. If you’re speedy, you can probably do three museums but if you like to take your time, just do one thoroughly.

1 day in Liverpool highlights

  • Royal Albert Dock
  • Museums (pick 1-3)
  • The Waterfront

Queen Avenue

  • Mathew Street (Wall of Fame & Cavern Club)
  • The Bluecoats (gallery)
  • Chinatown & the Bombed Out Church
  • Dinner (keep reading for options).

Liverpool itinerary: Morning at the Royal Albert Dock

Royal albert docks day in liverpool

I’d suggest beginning your day here. If you’ve arrived by train, walk from Liverpool Lime Street Station to the Royal Albert Dock in 20 minutes. Although there’s plenty to do in terms of culture and history, let’s start this Liverpool day trip the right way with…

Coffee & pastries at Rough Hand Made

Croissant Rough Hand Made

Although I sniffed out this place by myself (if you don’t believe food hunting is my special skill, check out my foodie archives ), TWO Liverpudlians have told me about it since. Rough Hand Made is apparently a local institution, describing itself as a ’boutique bakery’. I don’t think I’ve ever seen bigger croissants, or ones stuffed and slathered with more delicious ingredients. I opted for a white chocolate croissant with flakes on top and liquid white chocolate inside. Other decadent options include dulce de leche croissants. This cafe beside the water also serves excellent coffee, as well as sandwiches and pizza slices. Address: Unit 2A, Britannia Pavilion Royal Albert Dock, L3 4AD.

Visit 1-2 museums

Although all the waterfront museums are worth a visit, with just one day in Liverpool you won’t be able to visit them all. I’d suggest picking two you’re interested in and spending around 90 minutes at each. The most popular museums at the docks are:

  • The Museum of Liverpool (free)
  • TATE Liverpool (free)
  • Merseyside Maritime Museum (free)
  • The Beatles Story (£17)
  • The British Music Experience (£16).

If you’re unsure which to visit, here are more details…

Museum of Liverpool

Museum of Liverpool itinerary 1 day

The Museum of Liverpool makes for a great introduction if it’s your first time in the city. This colourful, interactive centre covers everything Liverpool-related from archaeology to social history, community, suffragettes and the Beatles. Ever-changing exhibitions include Liverpool Against the Apartheid (how the city’s Black community supported the anti-apartheid movement in the ’80s) and Blitzed: Liverpool Lives (personal stories about the Blitz in Liverpool). Opening times: 10am-6pm, Tuesday-Sunday. Entry price: free!

Beatles Story

Beside the Royal Albert Dock is this iconic museum dedicated to the fab four. The Beatles Story covers the history of the band from their humble beginnings to international stardom. Admire replicas of Abbey Road Studios and The Cavern Club as they’d have looked in the ’60s, listen to an informative audio guide, and travel to another time and place via the Beatles in India exhibition. Opening times: 10am-5.30pm (last entry 4pm) daily. Entry fee: £17 for adults, £13.50 for concessions, £9.50 for children. Get your Beatles Story ticket here .

Maritime Museum

Maritime Museum

Where better to learn about Liverpool’s maritime history than the Docks? During the 19th century, Liverpool was the wealthiest port in the world; there are countless tales to be told from this era. Visit the Titanic collection to learn more about the famous ship registered to Liverpool, and the Life on Board gallery as told by past passengers. Opening times: 10am-6pm, Tuesday-Sunday. Entry price: free!

TATE Liverpool

tate liverpool in 1 day

The Tate is worth a visit while spending a day in Liverpool. The colourful stone sculpture outside is a prelude to the many vibrant and thought-provoking works of art inside. I especially enjoyed the Whose Tradition? collection rethinking how artists like Pablo Picasso and Constantin Brancusi took inspiration from Central and West African cultures which were not necessarily theirs to take. 2023 update – this specific exhibition is now over but I’m sure there will be more like it. Opening times: 10am–5:50pm, Tuesday-Sunday. Entry fee: Free but you need to book an arrival slot in advance.

British Music Experience

British Music Experience liverpool day trip

The British Music Experience in the impressive Cunard Building explores the iconic history of British rock and pop. Voted Liverpool’s Tourism Experience of the Year in 2020, it’s a must for music fans regardless of age or era. See outfits worn by Freddie Mercury and the Spice Girls, instruments played by world-famous musicians and even Adele’s hand-written lyrics. Opening times: 10am-5pm, Wednesday-Sunday. Entry fee: £16 for adults, £10 for children, £11.50 for concessions. Get your British Music Experience ticket here .

Wander the Waterfront

Waterfront

When you’ve had your fill of museums, continue your Liverpool itinerary by wandering the waterfront. This area is particularly enjoyable on a sunny day when live musicians play and boat trips cruise the harbour. Related activity: 50-minute harbour cruise for £11 . A few iconic waterfront buildings to see include… The Three Graces: this trio of buildings includes the Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building. These are some of the grandest and most striking buildings in the city.

Three graces

Mann Island : this distinctive black building at Liverpool waterfront has apartments, a restaurant and a small art gallery inside. It’s free to enter so pop inside to visit the Open Eye Gallery .

Queen Avenue 1 day liverpool

By this point, you’ll have spent several hours at the waterfront so it’s time to explore other parts of Liverpool. Walk just 10 minutes to Queen Avenue off Castle Street, a hidden shopping street dubbed the ‘Diagon Alley of Liverpool’. Support local business by browsing the shops or stopping for lunch at Queen Bistro .

Foodie pick – another fantastic place for lunch is Chop Chop Korean just across from Queen Avenue. This cafe is known for its delicious and affordable Korean food.

Liverpool itinerary afternoon – Mathew Street’s Beatles locations

You can’t spend 1 day in Liverpool and miss Mathew Street, put on the map by the Cavern Club where the Beatles played their early gigs. There are a few points of interest for fans including…

The Eleanor Rigby Statue

Eleanor Rigby Statue

Located on Stanley Street just before the turning to Mathew Street, the Eleanor Rigby Statue is worth a quick stop. This sculpture of the fictional woman namechecked on the Yellow Submarine album was built in 1982 by singer, Tommy Steele. Turn onto Mathew Street to see the following…

Cavern Club

Cavern club

At number 10 Mathew Street is the venue described as the ‘birthplace of the Beatles’. The Cavern Club started life as a jazz club in the 1950s before switching to a rock ‘n’ roll venue. After returning from Hamburg in 1931, the Beatles played their first of 292 shows at the Cavern Club. You can go inside for a drink or night out but know you won’t be rubbing shoulders with the locals. The clientele is strictly tourists!

The Wall of Fame

In front of the Cavern Club is a wall adorned with the names of famous bands who played at the club. Don’t miss the chance to pose with the lifesize statue of John Lennon! As you’ll read, the bar beside it named the ‘Wall of Fame’ has no affiliation to the historic wall.

Beatles Museum

Beatles museum liverpool itinerary

The Beatles Museum is another place to learn about everyone’s favourite Liverpudlian band. Tour five floors containing over 1,000 rare items relating to John, George, Ringo and Paul. You’d have to be a super fan to visit the Beatles Story AND the Beatles Museum during a day trip to Liverpool (and probably wouldn’t have time to do much else) but I bet people do! Entry fee: £15 for adults, £10 for concessions, £7.50 for children. Opening times: 10am-5pm, 7 days a week. Last admission at 4pm. Get your Beatles Museum ticket here .

Mid-afternoon – the Bluecoat

The Bluecoat gallery

Before finishing your Liverpool day trip, squeeze in a quick trip to the Bluecoat . This hidden gem near Liverpool ONE shopping centre is an alternative art gallery with a cafe and lovely outdoor square. Sitting with a coffee listening to the birds sing is a peaceful experience in otherwise busy Liverpool city centre. This independent venue started life as a boarding school for poor children. Now the oldest building in Liverpool city centre, it’s also one of the most captivating. Tour exhibitions by local artists, many with a social conscience. Address: School Lane, L1 3BX. Opening times: 11am-5pm, Wednesday-Sunday. Entry fee: free!

Dinner option #1 – Chinatown

Chinatown arch

While spending 1 day in Liverpool, be sure to visit Chinatown , home to the oldest Chinese community in Europe (something you’ll know if you were paying attention at the museums earlier!). Shop at Chung Wah supermarket or eat a fantastic meal at one of the many highly-rated restaurants. Chamber 36  serves pan-Asian cuisine and cocktails while Yuet Ben has been serving authentic Northern Chinese cuisine since 1968. A couple of other places of interest near Chinatown include:

  • The Bombed Out Church (St Luke’s) – this church on the corner of Berry Street and Leece Street is now a cultural arts centre, cafe and garden bar. Visit ’til 10.30pm.
  • Rodney Street – hidden away from the city centre, this grand street of houses is one of the most historic places in Liverpool. For TV filming , the paved road is removed to reveal atmospheric cobbles beneath. Stroll down it to see where Peaky Blinders was shot.

Dinner option #2 – Duke Street Market

duke street food market

A handful of cool Liverpool food markets have sprung up in the last couple of years. One is Duke Street Market , a stylish food court with seating upstairs and downstairs. Eat tacos and burritos at Big Lola’s or Asian bowls at Ginger . It’s not the cheapest place to eat but it’s not the most expensive either: most main dishes are around £12. They also serve excellent coffee and cake, plus a huge range of drinks. Food times: Weds & Thurs ’til 9pm, Fri & Sat ’til 10pm and Sun ’til 8pm. From Weds to Sun, it stays open later but just for drinks.

Dinner option #3 – the Baltic Market

pad thai

For hipster dinner and drinks, finish your Liverpool day trip by walking 20 minutes from Chinatown to the Baltic Market , a colourful indoor marketplace popular with young people. Don’t expect anything gourmet but do expect excellent cocktails and fun foodie options like pizza, f ried chicken and Greek, Korean and Thai food. My friend and I shared halloumi fries and chicken katsu curry fries before I moved onto pad Thai and she ordered (much too much) Greek food including tzatziki, pitta, chicken souvlaki and, perhaps the highlight, feta rolls glazed with honey. What a feast! We spent about £20 each including drinks. Opening times: 5pm-10pm Weds & Thurs; 12pm-11pm Fri; 11am-11pm Sat; 11am-10pm Sun. Tip – the Baltic Market is quite far from Lime Street Station so I’d recommend calling an Uber on the way home. Liverpool is a safe city but it’s never fun walking at night especially as the market isn’t in the best-lit part of town.

I ended my day in Liverpool by hopping on a 9pm train arriving back in Manchester for 10pm. It was a busy day but worth it. Safe travels!

I’m usually left unsatisfied by one-day tours that I read, because I feel like they don’t cover a lot of ground, but I loved reading this one! I’m hoping I can squeeze it all into my day and I can’t wait to get to Liverpool 🙂

Hi Al, thanks for reading and commenting. I’m glad you enjoyed the itinerary and hope you love Liverpool… It’s a great city!

liverpool fc day trips

This was a perfect 1 day itinerary! Let me say Rose does not lead you a stray with her food recommendations! We started our morning with a pastry and coffee from Rough Home Made, which gave us an opportunity to visit the docks, stroll by the waterfront and power up for the British Museum Experience. The BME was a fun experience with some great artifacts. However, several major British artists were not represented or barely mentioned such as Led Zeppelin (1 mention), Elton John (3 pairs of glasses), Rolling Stones (minimum mentions), The Police (no mention), Adele (1 mention) and a little disappointing. However, Joe who was in the “play” section was a wonderful ambassador and gave us tons of stories and information. We walked down Queen Anne Street and then over to the Cavern Club. Be aware that the original Cavern Club no longer exists. It was rebuilt a few doors up and cost £5 to go into. Lastly, we went in search of Chinatown. On our walk, we passed the Duke Street Market that was inviting, but we pressed ahead. We found the gate, but the holy grail is across the street…..Chamber 36! The pan-asian food is delicious there was not an item that we did not like and the service was like a neighborhood hangout! It was an outstanding experience! Thanks Rose for all the wonderful recommendations. we enjoyed our visit to Liverpool!

Hi Karen, wow thanks for such a detailed comment! I’m so glad you had a good day and especially that you enjoyed the food suggestions. Rough Hand Made have the best croissants ever!!

Digging Deeper into Liverpool’s 1-0 Win over Atalanta

After the Reds fail to mount a true run at a comeback, we dig into the winners, losers and narratives on the night.

Atalanta v Liverpool FC: Quarter-Final Second Leg - UEFA Europa League 2023/24

For the first time in a year, Liverpool fail to win in four consecutive matches, as they proved unable to build on getting the early goal they wanted, and deservedly find themselves eliminated from the Europa League quarter-finals by an Atalanta side that will fancy their chances of winning their first European title in club history.

Below, then, a (very) quick word on the winners and losers on the night.

Legs: Not a lot of winners in Red tonight, and truly the only upside to the Reds getting eliminated from Europe the day after Arsenal and Manchester City did the same, is that none the three clubs vying for the Premier League title will have to contend with midweek trips across the continent, and the Merseysiders at least won’t be at a disadvantage in that regard.

Jürgen Klopp: Barring something absolutely remarkable taking place in the next five weeks, it looks as though the German manager will end his final season at the club with a single trophy, the less prestigious Carabao Cup, collected from Chelsea back in February, as his team has seen themselves eliminated from two cup competitions at the quarter-final stage in the space of a month, and nudging themselves off the top of the league table in just a week.

With six games to play, anything is still possible, but should things continue in the manner they have over the past few weeks, it’s not the send-off the former Dortmund man deserves, and while there are caveats aplenty — the team is young and only recently rebuilt and the title charge was an unexpected surprise to all of us in the first place — the promised parade to come at season’s end will carry a hint of disappointment with it.

Credit to the Opposition

With so many poor results all in a row, it will be tempting to pundits to mash them all together and point to Liverpool’s “poor run of form” or whatever, but it is important to points out how different the Manchester United and Crystal Palace results are from the Atalanta ones.

In the Premier League games, Liverpool beat their opponents up and down the pitch and missed a hatful of chances, losing 2-3 while generating an expected goal difference of 6.3-2.7. Profligate finishing and individual defensive errors were the major factors in the Reds’ failure to win these games, while the opposition’s effort was less impactful.

Against Gian Piero Gasperini, Liverpool were simply found out. Certainly, the 0-3 scoreline at Anfield flattered the visitors somewhat, if only in that the Reds would have expected to also score a few from the chances they created, but overall, the games never felt like the sort of contests Liverpool had the advantage in.

Atalanta set up at home the same way they did at Anfield, ocassionally pressing aggressively, but largely content to let their opponents play out from the back, inviting passes into the midfield outlets, which were man-marked and forced to receive the ball under heavy pressure with their backs to goal. The hosts turned the tie into a procession of one-on-one duels, and the Reds were unable to 1) win this sort of match from a purely athletic standpoint and 2) turn the game into one where Atalanta had to reckon with them as a team.

It was a deeply impressive pair of performances from the Nerazzurri , who were faster, stronger, quicker to react and more deliberate in their play across 180 minutes, but it also put on display a definitive weakness of the current Liverpool side, namely their lack of physicality and subsequent reliance on technical superiority.

It’s the sort of thing that can be addressed, both through recruitment and training, and better preparation could ameliorate it somewhat, but kudos to Gasperini who identified what was needed to knock the Reds out of their stride and to the Atalanta players for committing to it.

What Happens Next

The Reds have three consecutive away days coming up, starting with tough out and recent bogey team Fulham at the Craven Cottage on Sunday, before a midweek trip across the Mersey to take on an Everton side who would love nothing more than to enhance Liverpool’s misery.

Matt Beard has provided an update on the Liverpool FC Women squad ahead of Saturday’s trip to Bristol City.

The Reds will be without Shanice van de Sanden due to injury for the lunchtime kick-off at Ashton Gate in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

The game also comes too soon for Niamh Fahey – as a result of a tight calf – and Jasmine Matthews, with the defensive duo aiming to be back in team training next week.

Beard said at his pre-match press conference: “Jas and Niamh will be back in team training next week. Shanice isn’t available. Apart from that, everyone else is.”

The manager added: “[The international break] has allowed another couple more weeks of training into Taylor Hinds.

“We’ve got Jas and Niamh that will be back in team training probably next week. So, that time has enabled us to get the players that were injured back in and around the squad and being available for selection.”

Liverpool just got double blow thanks to Arsenal and Man City as fixture schedule confirmed

Liverpool has just six Premier League fixtures left under Jürgen Klopp. The Reds now know when each of those games will be played thanks to Arsenal and Man City.

Liverpool now knows when it will play each remaining fixture until the end of the season after both Arsenal and Manchester City were knocked out of the Champions League . Neither Mikel Arteta nor Pep Guardiola's sides progressed to the semi-finals of UEFA's premiere competition after losing to Bayern Munich and Real Madrid respectively.

Jürgen Klopp's side is hoping to come back from three goals down to make the Europa League semi-finals later today. West Ham United is 2-0 down against Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen and only Aston Villa of the English teams is likely to get into the final four of a European competition, with Unai Emery's men 2-1 up against Ligue 1 outfit Lille in the Conference League.

Had Arsenal beaten Bayern Munich , the Gunners would have needed to take the early Saturday kick-off on the weekend when they face Spurs and Liverpool travels to West Ham. That would have meant West Ham vs Liverpool moving to Sunday but those games will now stay where they are as a result of Arsenal's elimination .

That means Liverpool must play three times in the space of seven days, all away from home. After playing Fulham on Sunday, the Reds are away at Everton on Wednesday and then in the early slot on Saturday at West Ham . That looks like an incredibly intense run of games and Liverpool needs to win every league match left to have any chance of winning the title.

After that, Liverpool vs Tottenham is on Sunday, May 5 and the Reds trip to Aston Villa is on Monday, May 13. Every team plays at the same time on the final day of the season, which is Sunday, May 19. None of the league matches will now be moved with the schedule set in stone from here.

If Liverpool does progress in the Europa League despite being 3-0 down at half-time in the tie, the two-legged semi-final will be on Thursdays May 2 and May 9. No Premier League fixtures will be impacted by those matches, though it will take an incredible turnaround for Klopp to need to pencil in the two extra commitments.

Liverpool.com says: It is a benefit to some extent that Liverpool now knows when it will be playing but having the West Ham match in the lunchtime slot is far from ideal. Not having Arsenal take on Manchester City in a mammoth Champions League semi-final is not great either, with both of those sides having one less thing to distract them in the Premier League title race.

All in all, yesterday's results are a double blow for the Reds, though they just have to get back to winning ways and hope for the best. It is a disadvantage that Arsenal and Manchester City are out of European competition, and that the West Ham game isn't being moved, but there is nothing that Liverpool can do about either of those things.

Fulham vs Liverpool: Prediction, kick-off time, TV, live stream, team news, h2h results, odds

Liverpool travel to Fulham knowing they cannot afford to drop any more points after a shock 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace at home last week gave control of the title race to rivals Man City.

After leading the Premier League for 11 out of the last 13 game weeks, Liverpool have now dropped to third, behind Man City and Arsenal. With only six games left in the season, only three points will suffice.

Liverpool were also knocked out of the Europa League by Atalanta in the midweek, and the Premier League is the last trophy they’re still playing for.

Meanwhile, Fulham have cemented themselves as a firmly mid-table side, who on their day can contend with anyone. In the past five games, they’ve thoroughly beaten top half sides West Ham and Tottenham, whilst losing to relegation strugglers Nottingham Forest and having to mount a late comeback against 20th placed Sheffield United to pick up a point.

Liverpool will have to be wary of Rodrigo Muniz, who scored eight goals in as many games in February and March. Muniz has not scored in three games and will be looking to get back amongst the goals.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Fulham vs Liverpool is scheduled for an 4:30pm BST kick-off on Sunday, April 21, 2024.

The match will take place at Craven Cottage.

Fulham vs Liverpool team news

Fulham have a clean bill of health.

Thiago Alcantara, Ben Doak and Joel Matip have all been ruled out

Conor Bradley didn’t make the trip to Atalanta on Thursday with a ligament issue, and will be out for Sunday’s game.

Stefan Bajcetic is still being eased back, and didn’t make the trip to Atalanta despite participating in first team training in the build up to the game. It’s unclear if he’ll be fit enough to make the first team squad on Sunday.

Fulham vs Liverpool prediction

Liverpool can’t afford to slip up again or the title will be entirely out of reach. They should have too much quality for an inconsistent Fulham side.

Atalanta 0-1 Liverpool (Agg: 3-1): Jurgen Klopp's side crash out of Europa League despite win in Bergamo

Match report as Liverpool crashed out of the Europa League after being unable to overturn a 3-0 first-leg loss; Mo Salah scored from the penalty spot to reduce arrears, but it was not enough to challenge Atalanta's commanding aggregate lead

By Laura Hunter

Friday 19 April 2024 13:32, UK

Liverpool crashed out of the Europa League to Atalanta

Liverpool were eliminated from the Europa League despite beating Atalanta 1-0 in Bergamo, with all the damage done in the first leg, as they fell to a 3-1 aggregate score.

The Reds, knowing they had a mountain to climb after losing 3-0 at Anfield, came flying out the traps and enjoyed the perfect start seven minutes in when Mo Salah converted from the penalty spot to raise hopes of a historic comeback.

Salah was then guilty of missing a gilt-edged chance to reduce the deficit again in the first half, attempting to loop an effort over Juan Musso from Cody Gakpo's teasing through ball, blasting disappointingly wide.

Jurgen Klopp spoke about memories from the Barcelona fightback of 2019 pre-match, urging his players to "fail in the most beautiful way" and while some of their play in the first 45 minutes - driven by the returning Trent Alexander-Arnold - was compelling it brought only one goal. Not nearly enough.

Darwin Nunez consoles team mate Curtis Jones

  • Jurgen Klopp made six changes from the first leg defeat at Anfield. Both full-backs were dropped in favour of Liverpool's preferred pairing - Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
  • Dominik Szoboszlai came into midfield, meaning Wataru Endo missed out, while Luis Diaz and Mo Salah both started. Alisson was restored in goal.
  • Atalanta made two changes - Sead Kolasinac and Aleksei Miranchuk came in.

Liverpool's well-documented wastefulness appears to be haunting them wherever they go, with the result compounding a particularly damaging few weeks, Klopp's frustration clearly aimed at the way his side threw away the contest on home soil a week ago.

How Atalanta dashed European dreams

Mohamed Salah scored from the penalty spot

Only the Premier League remains. It doesn't feel like long ago that talk of a famous quadruple was surfacing - nothing but a distant memory now.

Liverpool have just six games, trailing Man City by two points in the table, in which to ensure their beloved manager does not leave with only a Carabao Cup winner's medal to toast in his final season of a nine-year reign.

Perhaps not surprisingly for a team entering the last-chance saloon, then, the visitors set off at a rapid pace.

With Alexander-Arnold making his first start since mid-February after injury, the balance felt more Liverpool-like, as the defender was given license to drift into midfield and link play with intricate short passes as well as raking long balls.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk looks forlorn at the final whistle in Bergamo

His cross, which hit the outstretched arm of Matteo Ruggeri, won the penalty after Luis Diaz had raced down the left and cut inside, which Salah converted, before a golden chance to claw back another goal fell the Egyptian's way five minutes before the break.

Salah has been below his best since his own return from injury in February and never looked comfortable when put clean through by Gakpo, with his lob over Musso ending harmlessly wide.

Player ratings:

Atalanta: Musso (7), Djimsiti (7), Hien (5), Kolasinac (6), Zappacosta (7), De Roon (6), Ederson (6), Ruggeri (6), Koopmeiners (6), Miranchuk (6), Scamacca (6). Subs used: De Ketelaere (6), Pasalic (6), Lookman (n/a). Liverpool: Alisson (7), Robertson (7), Van Dijk (6), Konate (6), Alexander-Arnold (7), Jones (6), Szoboszlai (6), Mac Allister (6), Diaz (6), Gakpo (7), Salah (6). Subs used: Jota (6), Nunez (5), Elliot (6), Gomez (6), Danns (n/a). Player of the match: Trent Alexander-Arnold

For all Liverpool's will, Atalanta actually had the better chances of the second half, but Ederson and Koopmeiners both shot straight at Alisson.

A triple change - including Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Harvey Elliot - brought about very little change, and it was obvious the game was up way before the final whistle went in Bergamo.

When it did arrive, scenes of jubilation ensued, including a display of fireworks - just celebration for a side who had progressed to their first European semi-final since 1988, dismissing the tournament favourites in the process.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to TNT Sports: "It was clear we gave ourselves a massive hurdle. I liked the game a lot tonight with the desire and power the boys show. It was incredible from them.

"It was really tricky and we were too hasty in moments. If Trent Alexander-Arnold had been a bit fitter we could have gone a bit longer, but it is insane that he has even played! In the end he was running out of gas.

"We won the game and that was the reaction we wanted to show. It was difficult and we knew it would be but they deserve to go through 100 per cent.

"We have to focus on the league and that is exactly what we will do from now. Tonight we won the game so we are back to winning ways.

"It is mixed emotions. We are out but I am happy with the game. We would have wished that we could have gone to Dublin but that hasn't happened. We now have one competition left and we will throw ourselves into that completely."

Opta: Atalanta break new ground in Europe

  • For just a second time in the club's history, Atalanta have reached the semi finals of a major European competition.
  • Liverpool have been eliminated by an Italian side in the knockout stages of a major European competition for the first time since losing the 2007 Champions League final against AC Milan.
  • Liverpool haven't lost a single game in any competition this season when they've gone 1-0 up (P30 W27 D3).
