The last time we rode the Trek Rail we awarded it our 2021 E-Bike of the Year crown in the shop bought category. Since then we haven’t had another chance to ride one, mainly because they’ve been flying off the shop floor. Meanwhile, Trek hasn’t rested on its laurels – the front triangle has been lengthened and the extra space used to stuff in Bosch’s biggest 750Wh battery on all but the smallest frame size. So how does it perform and is it one of the best electric mountain bikes on offer? Need to know: Mino link on the seatstay/rocker interface gives high and low geometry settings – useful if you want to run a 27.5in rear wheel Knock Block steering limiter uses interlocking stem and headset spacers, while steerer tube gets oversize 1.8in taper Top tube System controller and wireless remote are available to buy aftermarket, but they should come as standard M, L, and XL frames get 750Wh battery, while S gets a 625Wh This updated Rail is called the Gen 4, but you can still buy the old Gen 3 model. It gets the smaller 625Wh battery, non-Smart System-compatible electronics and a shorter reach. Although buying the Gen 4 seems like a no-brainer, the new large frame is a really big bike, with a 490mm reach and a yawning 35mm gap to the medium. So some riders may achieve a better fit on the old Gen 3. It’s disappointing that Trek hasn’t fitted the latest Bosch System Controller (as found on the Mondraker) to the top tube. Instead you get a measly blanking plate. To enjoy the improved integration and reduced clutter you’ll have to fork out an extra £1,600 for the next model up, which seems pretty stingy. Suspension Trek claims the Rail delivers 150mm travel, but we only measured 140mm (3mm less than the last Rail we tested). However, we didn’t notice this shortcoming on the trail, mostly because the long wheelbase of the Rail gives it excellent stability at high speeds on rough ground. Where we found it wanting was in terms of grip and sensitivity. It struggled to trace smaller bumps, so not only did it lack some comfort on long rides, but it needed more effort to hold a line on off-cambers, through slow turns, and in the wet. Having said that, there’s plenty of support, so as long as we had the energy, we could ride the Rail like a runaway train. Our bike came with a RockShox Zeb in place of the advertised Domain RC. With 38mm stanchions it perfectly matches the hench proportions of the Rail frame, but it wasn’t the smoothest or most supple fork on test. In that respect there was a symbiosis between the Trek’s front and rear suspension, even if it wasn’t quite the fairytale relationship we’d hoped for. Components Trek proffers two brake specs on the Rail 9.7 – Shimano Deore or SRAM Code R, both in four-piston guise. Given the choice, we’d take the Shimano …Continue reading »

Trek's best long-travel electric mountain bike, designed for All Mountain and Enduro Riding. Light weight optimum compaction low void (OCLV) carbon fiber and magnesium frame comes in three sizes. Flip chip spacer in the rear swing arm further refines geometry for low and high settings.

Available in three premium color schemes, the bike is setup with 29" wheels but can accommodate 27.5" or a mixed mullet setup (smaller rear wheel, larger front). Sturdy 12mm and 15mm thru-axles with Boost hub spacing offer stronger spoke bracing angle. Magnetic 6mm hex wrench quick release lever makes trail-maintenance convenient.

SRAM AXS wireless electronic shifting, dropper post, and air pressure settings and alerts for the tires and suspension. Bosch Smart System LED Remote, Kiox 300 display, PowerTube 750 battery, and CX motor with eBike Flow app. Premium quad-piston hydraulic disc brakes with extra-large 220mm front extra thick front rotor. Bottle cage bosses and ABUS keyed-alike code keyset.

Excellent weight positioning with the motor and battery low and center, but the PowerTube 750 goes from 9.7lbs to 10.8lbs with the color-matched Trek RIB cover and handle. Longer wheelbase due to longer battery design. Two smartphone apps required to configure all of the electronics (SRAM AXS and Bosch eBike Flow). No USB charging with the Bosch LED Remote despite having a USB-C port built in.

A 1x12 SRAM NX Eagle drivetrain, Bontrager Line dropper post, powerful 4-piston brakes for confident descents, and Bontrager Line Comp 30 29er wheels that are already completely tubeless ready, including sealant. Why you'll love it - The new, better-than-ever Bosch motor is smaller, lighter, and more efficient. It feels more natural while you’re pedaling, and has less drag when you’re not - Rail shreds just as hard as its non-electric brethren, plus it powers you right back up the mountain—no shuttle or lift necessary - The full-color Kiox controller displays ride info, connects with your Bluetooth enabled devices, and has a built-in theft prevention feature - Made with the same exclusive frame tech as Remedy and Slash, like Mino Link adjustable geometry, a Straight Shot down tube for extra stiffness, and Active Braking Pivot (ABP) - Trek's Removable Integrated Battery (RIB) system looks great and is super user-friendly: it fully hides the battery in the frame for protection, makes it easy remove the battery without tools and lets you mount a water bottle cage

Plus-size rims and tires

Plus-size rims and tires

Wider than standard yet narrower than fat, plus-size rims and tires hit the sweet spot in grip, stability, and speed, giving you more confidence on technical terrain. Compared to a standard tire you’ll feel grip in places you wouldn’t expect thanks to a bigger contact patch and greater rollover clearance. More air volume allows lower tire pressures which softens bumps and increases float on sand or snow. Whether you’re a novice or an expert, the benefits of plus-size tires and rims will amplify your mountain biking fun.

Simply put, electric mountain bikes give you the power to ride more trails. This ever-changing sector of the mountain bike market is pushing the limits of a traditional bike and creating opportunities for more people to get involved in the sport. These bikes have quickly become a favorite for our employees and we can’t stop riding them. We’re always in search of the best bikes for our customers, so here’s the scoop on the latest and greatest in electric mountain bikes.

Kiox or Purion on 2021 Rail 9.7?

Looking at the Trek website, some parts of the description say Purion and some say Kiox. The pictures seem to interchange as well. Does anyone know for sure which it will come with?

I have the 2020 9.7 model and it came with the Purion. The Kiox computer was an upgrade that cost about $400cdn. (Plus installation).

I think I read that the 2021 Rails were now coming with the kiox display

Website says kiox and pictures show kiox, so my 21 9.7 better come with a kiox. One of the reasons I upgraded from the rail 7.

The ProjectOne colors show pictures of both, and under “The Tech You Get” section it lists the Purion. But I’m thinking (hoping!) they just used some of last years text and pictures. When are you expecting yours to be delivered bluewater87? I can’t get a solid delivery date on mine.

I had my LBS install the Kiox after I received the 9.7 in November 2019. I like the display and the remote however there are two things that concern me. 1-If you don’t notice that the kiox has fallen off after a crash you must retrace your trail/path and search. This has happened to me twice. Once it was next to me and the other time took 15-20min to find. The magnetic release is a great feature and prevents unnecessary damage but if the kiox falls off or gets knocked off during a decent a rider may not notice. I think a short tether attached to the kiox and mount could prevent this. 2-within a few weeks of the kiox install I noticed Bluetooth connection issues. These were intermittent at first but soon became impossible to make a Bluetooth connection with the app. My LBS addressed this issue and I then purchased the “lock-feature”. The lock feature worked correctly until I could not make any connection between my phone (or between any device) and the kiox computer. This meant no peddle assist. I contacted Bosch but they had no solution. They eventually stopped emailing me. I had to get the LBS to de-activate the “lock-feature “. When I purchased the lock-feature “ I activated it through the app and Bluetooth. Once I could no longer make a connection the lock feature remained active. I have since deactivated the lock feature because I fear that I could be locked out again. ($11.00 well spent?). Since the recent updates the connection issue is not as bad, but it’s still bad. I like kiox, the app and the features that come with this device. I’m sure that I’m not the only customer who is having these issues but being ignored by Bosch is probably the most frustrating.

jeroen said: Agree with the tether, I've also lost dropped mine of my bike already twice, and it being black, not always easy to find. One hint though: install a Bluetooth tool, eg. LightBlue (iOS) Yes, it is a bit silly as there are two problems: losing phone or losing kiox. If your phone dies, then your bike won't power either Ability to have two Kiox'es or bind to two phones would be better indeed... or at least some other bluetooth token. It indeed limits the usability of the lock feature quite a bit, the beep beep is still satisfying though even though it means the bike is not locked-locked; engine lock would have been awesome.... an automatic hydraulic arm clutching the nearest pole would be cool too though Then again, may folks, especially here, ride their bikes in the middle of nowhere, thus locking is typically not really needed anyway. And it primarily protects from other people with a Kiox riding away on it, powered. Click to expand...

Nice. I use this position for kiox also. It is way better then on frame tube for seeing. I have Rail 7. I bought the tube kiox mount by Trek also, but changed my mind and take the original Bosch mount.

By adding 100-150 EUR to budget you can buy Nyon MY21 and get capability to adjust different assist profiles. I'm currently running purion but this new Nyon made Kiox retrofit kit non desirable update. Nyon though is bigger than Kiox.

@Stihldog love the tether, definitely something I need to change also, already dropped my Kiox twice (kicked it off with a odd leg movement), handlebar might be a bit better position because of that. Thanks for the ideas!
