Visakhapatnam, also commonly known as Vizag, is one of the oldest port cities in the country. Situated in the heart of Andhra Pradesh, Vizag was announced as the state capital of Andhra Pradesh on January 31, 2023. The city is known for its picturesque beaches and serene landscape, as well as a rich cultural past. The port of Visakhapatnam is renowned for being home to the oldest shipyard in all of India. 

Located a short distance away from Visakhapatnam is Araku Valley, one of the prime attractions of Vizag. Situated at a lofty 910 metres above sea level, Araku Valley is a hill station replete with gushing waterfalls, crystal clear streams, lush green gardens and some challenging trekking trails. Vizag is dotted with many beaches along its coastline, with the most famous one being the Yarada Beach. One of the most stunning places to see in all of Visakhapatnam, Yarada beach is surrounded by majestic hills on three sides, and by the Bay of Bengal on the other side. One of the best things about Vizag’s beaches is that they are a lot cleaner and a lot less crowded than other famous beaches along the Indian coastline, and Yarada beach is no exception. It is the perfect place to sit back on the golden sands and witness a marvellous sunrise or sunset.  If you’re a history lover, the Borra Caves are one of the best tourist attractions that Vizag has to offer for you. Nestled amidst the Ananthagiri Hills in Araku Valley, the Borra Caves are over thousands of years old and are the biggest among all the caves found in India. Made entirely of natural karstic limestone, the caves are kaleidoscopic in nature, and the light falling on the rocks coupled with the waterfalls creates an extremely colourful effect, lending an aura of magic and mysticism to the entire ambience. The Katiki Waterfalls, situated a short distance away from the Borra Caves, is a gushing waterfall that measures around 50 feet in height and is completely surrounded by the lush greenery of the valley. The crystal-clear water cascading down the rocks, bordered by the gleaming green foliage is a sight for sore eyes. Being a coastal area, the primary cuisine of Visakhapatnam includes seafood, as well as traditional Andhra South Indian cuisine.  While Visakhapatnam is not exactly renowned for being a shopping destination, you will still find a lot of things that you can take back home. You can purchase a wide variety of stuff starting from handicrafts to Kalamkari paintings to wooden toys to even gorgeous Pochampalli and Ikat sarees.

Telangana’s history has been shaped by many great dynasties like the Mauryas, Satvahanas, Chalukyas and Kakatiyas. The region came under the dominion of the Delhi Sultanate in the 14 th century, Bahmani Sultanate in the 15 th century and Qutb Shahis in the 16 th century. The Qutb Shahi kingdom fell into the hands of the Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb in 1687.

In 1712, Qamar-ud-din Khan became the administrator (Nizam-ul-Mulk) of the region. Later, he took the name Asaf Jah, laying the foundation of what came to be known as the Asaf Jahi dynasty. He named the region, Hyderabad Deccan, and his lineage came to be known as the Nizams of Hyderabad. When the colonial powers established their control over the country, the Nizams obtained their support and kept ruling Hyderabad under their protection.

After India’s freedom, the then Nizam wanted Hyderabad State to remain independent. But the Indian Government annexed it in 1948 with ‘Operation Polo’. In 1956, Telangana region was combined with Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh . In the years that followed, there were many major movements to revoke the merger. Consequently, the state of Telangana was officially formed from the northwest part of Andhra Pradesh on 2 nd June, 2014.

Telangana shares its border with Chhattisgarh in the east, Andhra Pradesh in the south and east, Karnataka in the west, and Maharashtra in the north. Located on the Deccan Plateau, the state’s landscape is dotted with mountain ranges, hills, and dense forests. Krishna and Godavari are the two major rivers flowing through the state.

GVL initiates ‘Vision Visakhapatnam 2030’ meetings

Visakhapatnam: BJP Rajya Sabha member GVL Narasimha Rao held a meeting with representatives from the travel, tourism, and hotel sectors on Sunday as part of his “Vision Visakhapatnam 2030” initiative.

The meeting, aimed at identifying the possibilities of making Visakhapatnam a high-end tourist destination and preparing a road map for the same, was attended by AP Chamber of Commerce Chairman, Visakhapatnam Chapter Srinath Chittori, CII Vice-Chairman Granthi Rajesh and representatives from hotel, travel and tourism fields.

As part of “Vision Visakhapatnam 2030”, GVL had already held meetings with the representatives of shipping, pharma, fertilisers, chemicals and aqua sector industries from Visakhapatnam and arranged interactions of industry representatives with union ministers to prepare a road map for development of these sectors in Visakhapatnam region.

Meeting with the hotel and tourism sectors identified an acute shortage of skilled workers with hospitality, housekeeping, and culinary skills. GVL suggested that the tourism sector offers a great opportunity for training and employing the local youth by creating the necessary training facilities and infrastructure. He would coordinate with the government agencies for setting up such suitable facilities and infrastructure in Visakhapatnam, the MP stated.

Noting that there are no incentives or encouragement from the state government to the tourism and hotel sector and therefore even in a big city like Visakhapatnam, the occupancy rate of hotels is not more than 50 to 60 percent, GVL said that in such a situation, there is a need for the tourism industry to prepare an integrated plan for the development of tourism in Visakhapatnam region. This would require adopting innovative marketing ideas to position Visakhapatnam with its unmatched nature’s resources and beauty as a unique destination in the country, he said and concluded that promoting “Brand Visakhapatnam” and leveraging new infrastructure like the international cruise terminal would help establish it as a major tourist destination not just for leisure tourism but also for eco-tourism, conference tourism, medical tourism etc.
