The 2024 route 25 April 2024

36th edition from July 13 to 15, 2024

Created in 1989, the Tour de l’Ain is included in the calendar of the Union Cycliste Internationale (Class 2.1) and counts towards the UCI Europe Tour. This classification enables it to welcome some of the world’s top teams. These will be presented in June.

A special place is given to neo-pros and development teams. The Tour de l’Ain has enabled young talents such as Romain Bardet, Warren Barguil, Julian Alaphilippe, Pierre Latour and, more recently, David Gaudu to assert themselves alongside experienced riders.

The Tour de l’Ain’s short, dynamic stages, including the final stretch through the Haut-Jura, make it a sure bet on the international circuit, favoring all-rounders with proven climbing skills.

The official broadcasters are France 3 Auvergne Rhône-Alpes and Eurosport.

The race is accompanied by the U17 race welcoming some thirty teams from all over France and abroad, on the final route of the 3 “Pro” stages as well as the “ Cyclosportive Lelex – Pays de Gex ” The event, which is open to all, will also take place just before the professional riders take to the track on July 14. Over 600 riders are expected.

For the 36th edition, the commune of Laiz (La Veyle Communauté de Communes) will host the start of the inaugural stage, where the peloton will visit the entire western side of the département, between Bresse and Dombes.

As usual, this first stage should be hotly contested, motivating the riders before two more rugged stages. Will the attackers be able to outwit the sprinters in Bourg-en-Bresse (Grand Bourg Agglomération), the prefecture of the Ain department?

From the Plaine de l’Ain through the Haut-Bugey to the Pays de Gex, the second stage of this 36th edition will be the queen stage on the national holiday. Saint-Vulbas and the resort of Lélex Monts-Jura, traditional stopover towns, are sure to see a showdown between the strongest men.

This final stage of the Aindin triptych will set off from Lagnieu (CC Plaine de l’Ain), the finish town in 2023, towards Ile Chambod (Cerdon Vallée de l’Ain). Taken twice, the final circuit features 3 climbs, including the Col du Berthiand (4.8km at 6%), and could well promise a bumpy ride and an upset in the overall standings… !

Last year, Michaël Storer (Groupama-FDJ) won the event ahead of Frenchmen Kenny Elissonde (Lidl-Trek) and Nicolas Prodhomme (Ag2r Citroën).

Tour de France 2024 stages

This year’s Tour de France kicks off in Italy with three stages starting in Florence then traveling through Emilia-Romagna from Rimini in the east via Bologna to Turin. The first two are packed with climbs so expect attacking riding then the third is a nailed on sprint finish as there is barely a lump on the 230km between Plaisance and Turin.

On day four the race then hits the mountains and to start with the route climbs 40 km due west though the ski resort of Sestrieres but only on a pitch of 3.7%, then after this takes on the short climb over the Col de Montgenèvre to cross into France. The final climb is the mighty Col du Galibier, however it’s the ‘easy’ side from Briançon that the riders face before the rapid descent to the finish in Valloire.

That’s it for the first visit to the Alps as the race next heads into two sprint days, stage 5 from Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne to Saint-Vulbas and then the featureless stage 6 from Macon to Dijon.

Stage even will likely see the first serious GC action on the 25.3km flat time trial from Nuits-saint-Georges to Gevrey-Chambertin. The TT specialists will also be up for this one as with little to no elevation it’s just about as pure a time trial course as you could plot.

The 183km stage 8 from Semur-en-Auxois to Colombey-les-Deux-Églises is fairly lumpy and will tempt breaks but the sprinters team should be able to control things if they pay attention.

Stage 9 is one all the riders will have been dreading as it contains the unpredictable madness of dirt roads with a total of 15 sectors across the 199km. Starting and finishing in Troyes there are also four small climbs to contend with but it’s the unmade surfaces that will present the most danger.

After the stress of stage 9 Monday is the first race day of the race then the action resumes on Tuesday with a pan flat 187km from Orléans to Saint-Amand-Montrond.

On Wednesday things spice up with a day of small yet steep climbs on stage 11 in the Massif Central, the highlight and high point of which is the fantastic Pas de Peyrol but then it’s back to the flat for stage 12 between Aurillac and Villeneuve-sur-Lot and stage 13 from Agen to Pau.

Pau is nicknamed the gateway to the Pyrenees and that it is as stage 14 heads right into the mountains to cross the one and only Col du Tourmalet, the Hourquette d’Ancizan to then finish at Pla d’Adet. This first summit finish will have been worth the wait and will likely be the most decisive stage of the whole the week. Right after that comes another brutal Pyrenean day with four first category climbs on stage 15 before the second summit finish in two days on top of the Plateau de Beille.

Following this comes the second rest day then it’s time for the final week, and what a final week. Stage 16 from Gruissan to Nimes is easy enough then stage 17 to Superdevoluy crossing the Col du Noyer and stage 18 to Barcelonnette will certainly push the riders but its the next two that are killer.

Stage 19 from Embrun to the summit finish at Isola 2000 crosses both the Col de Vars and the giant Cime de la Bonette, which at 2,802 meters is the highest paved road in France and although only 144km-long gains a huge 4,400m of altitude.

Then the penultimate stage, stage 20 is shorter still at 132km and gains even more elevation with a whopping 4600m to be climbed. Starting in Nice and finishing on top of the Col de la Couillole it ticks off 1 second category and 3 first category climbs along the way.

To finish the race, in place of the usual sprint in Paris to avoid clashing with the Olympics there is a 23.5km time trial into Nice. This is the first time the race has finished with a time trial since 1989, could it throw up as much drama?

Today at the Tour de France

On another stage littered with wicked climbs under the baking Italian sun it was the breakaway who had their day once again. Launching the fatal blow on the second ascent of the climb to the San Luca Basilica it was Frenchman Kévin Vauquelin (Arkea B+B) who was victorious.

Behind in the group of favourites Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) couldn’t resist launching an attack and towards the summit of the final climb to the Basilica he exploded from the pack taking one man, Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) with him. The two worked together and although only taking a handful of seconds from the other contenders it put Pogačar in the Yellow jersey.

The third stage from Piacenza to Torino is thankfully flat so the race can relax and the sprinters can fight out the finish.

Tour de france 2024 sStage 3

What happened to Remco Evenepoel and Jonas Vingegaard?

If it wasn’t for the fateful events of April 5th at the Tour of the Basque Country we would have been building up to a very different looking Tour de France in 2024, but the horrendous crash that saw not one but two of the favourites end up in hospital changed the whole season in seconds. With both Remco Evenepoel (Soudal–Quick-Step) and two time winner and defending champion Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) sustaining multiple fractures it was a doubt they would see any more action this year.

They have however both recovered enough to be on the start line but far from the condition they would have liked to be in, especially when they are trying to beat a Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) who seemingly won the Giro without breaking sweat.

Evenepoel tested his form in the Critérium du Dauphiné where he convincingly won the time trial but he suffered in the mountains, especially when the gradient went into double figures. Vingegaards’ form though is a total mystery as he’s been kept at altitude away from racing but the team have said he would not be on the start line unless they thought he could win.

Simon Warren has been obsessed with cycling since the summer of 1989 after watching Greg Lemond battle Laurent Fignon in the Tour de France. Although not having what it took to beat the best, he found his forte was racing up hills and so began his fascination with steep roads. This resulted in his 2010’s best-selling  100 Greatest Cycling Climbs , followed to date by 14 more guides to vertical pain. Covering the British Isles, Belgium, France, Italy and Spain he has been riding and racing up hills and mountains for over 30 years now. He hosts talks, guides rides, has written columns for magazines and in 2020 released his first book of cycling routes,  RIDE BRITAIN . About The 2024 Tour de France Cycling Race

The 2024 Tour de France looks a little different this year, but that doesn’t mean it will be any easier over cyclists over 21 grueling stages. This year, the 2,170-mile, 23-day race will start in Florence, Italy, as Paris remains busy getting set for the Olympics and it will end in Nice on the Côte d’Azur. Defending two-time winner Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark and two-time champion and 2022 and 2023 runner-up Tadej Pogačar of Slovenia are expected to be yellow jersey frontrunners. If you’re looking for Americans to cheer for, keep an eye out for Matteo Jorgenson, Neilson Powless, and Sean Quinn, who took home the 2024 U.S. National Road Race Championship.

The Tour de France, the most iconic cycling race in the world, is back for its 111th race. We've put together everything you need to know about how to watch the Tour de France, including free live streaming options.

Contrary to its name, the race will kick off this year in Florence and coast around Italy for a few stages before heading into France for the majority of the contest. The competition is spread across 23 days, with 21 different race stages and two Mondays for rest. The race will conclude on July 21 in Nice, France. The winner is determined as the cyclist with the shortest combined times across the entirety of the race.

Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard won the 2022 and 2023 races and will return to defend his title following a massive crash in April that left him hospitalized for several days. Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacar, who won the 2020 and 2021 Tour de France, is Vingegaard's main competition heading into the race this year. In May, Pogacar won the Giro d'Italia, the first of the annual Grand Tour races, by a shocking, almost 10-minute margin.

Keep reading to learn all of the ways you can live stream the Tour de France, no matter where you are in the world. Plus, we'll keep updating this page with daily start times for each leg of the race.

Start and finish times

What can you expect from the 2024 tour de france.

This year's race should be an exciting battle for overall victory, with four potential winners all vying for the maillot jaune. Reigning champion Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease A Bike), Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step) and Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe) are the men most likely, although newly-anointed Giro d'Italia champion Pogačar is the only rider to have come through the early season unscathed. The other three have missed training time after tangling with each other in the same crash in Itzulia Basque Country in April.

Vingegaard was the worst affected , and in early June there was still a question mark over whether he would definitely be at the Tour de France, but he was announced on the start list the week before the race.

There are plenty of sprinting opportunities scattered throughout the race. Last year's green jersey Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) will be the man to beat, pushed hard others including Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and Fabio Jakobsen (dsm-firmenich-PostNL). Many eyes will also be on Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan), who returns for his last Tour de France in the hope of finally beating the all-time 35-stage-win record that he is currently tied on with Eddy Merckx.

The final stage sees the race make way for the Paris Olympic Games and finish outside the capital for the first time in history, with a time trial from Monaco to Nice.

After cutting his teeth on local and national newspapers, James began at Cycling Weekly as a sub-editor in 2000 when the current office was literally all fields.

Eventually becoming chief sub-editor, in 2016 he switched to the job of full-time writer, and covers news, racing and features.

A lifelong cyclist and cycling fan, James's racing days (and most of his fitness) are now behind him. But he still rides regularly, both on the road and on the gravelly stuff.

There has never been a Tour de France quite like the one cycling fans will watch in 2024, starting on June 29 with Stage 1.

For the first time in the race's history, the Tour de France will begin in Italy, and for the first time, the race will not finish in Paris.

“It’s a really unique route,” said FloBikes analyst and reporter Gregor Brown. “And it starts with a bang like last year’s Tour de France. The first stage, there’s climbing, second stage there's climbing… the first two stages are already tough stages (and) Tadej Pogačar is going to come out swinging.”

Pogačar is one of the major storylines of this year’s Tour de France.

Already a two-time general classification winner at just 25 years old, Pogačar is trying to complete the rare Giro D’Italia-Tour de France double, which hasn’t been done since 1998.

The course at the 2024 Tour de France also includes rare stages that feature gravel and even a time trial in the final stage.

“(The course) has gravel, Stage 9, 199 kilometers with 32 kilometers of gravel that really gets the fans excited and adds an element of unknown,” Brown said.

null

Due to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, the Tour de France will not finish in Paris, but instead in Nice, France. The race will begin in the heart of Florence, Italy.

The Tour de France is streaming live on FloBikes and the FloSports app in Canada , and Brown said it’s an exciting year for Canadian cycling fans.

Brown noted that 26-year-old Derek Gee of Ottawa, Ontario, is poised to break out at this year’s Tour. Gee won Stage 3 at the 2024 Critérium du Dauphiné  and had a strong showing at the 2023 Giro d'Italia.

“Derek Gee, super exciting and great for Canadian fans,” Brown said. “(Gee) came out of nowhere. Is Derek Gee going for GC (general classification) at the Tour de France? The team (Premier Tech) is going to support him for the overall classification. He has a good shot at getting a stage win, I would say.”

Tour de France 2024 live stream: Can you watch for free?

The unquestioned biggest race in cycling is back, with the top riders in the world set to take on the 2024 Tour de France. For the first time in 111th editions of the race, the finish will be in Nice instead of Paris, as the latter prepares to host the quickly upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics.

Watch the Tour de France 2024 live stream on Peacock

Can you watch the tour de france 2024 live stream for free, watch the tour de france 2024 live stream from abroad.

The race starts with Stage 1 on Saturday, June 29, at 6:30 a.m. ET. In the United States, you can watch on Peacock (live coverage of every stage), NBC (live coverage of a few stages) or TV5Monde (French-speaking coverage of every stage).

If you don’t have cable or you’re just looking for more information, here’s a complete rundown of all the different ways you can watch a live stream of the 2024 Tour de France in the U.S.

This is the far-and-away best option for watching the Tour de France in the United States. The reasoning isn’t exactly complicated, either. If you want to watch every single stage live, and if you want to watch in English, then Peacock is the only  way to do that in the U.S.

Unfortunately, there’s no free trial. Fortunately, you only need the basic “Premium” tier to watch, and that will only cost you $6 for a month (or a slightly discounted $60 for the whole year). That’s well worth it for the Tour de France by itself, but you’ll also be able to watch the upcoming Summer Olympics, other live sports and hundreds of hours of TV shows and movies.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a better deal in streaming right now.

If you’re intent on watching a free live stream of the Tour de France, Fubo is undoubtedly your best option. It includes NBC, which will have live coverage of a few stages, but what we’re really interested in here is the TV5Monde channel, a French-language channel that will broadcast each stage of the race (some may be live, some may be on a tape delay).

TV5Monde is available by itself as an add-on to Fubo’s main channel package, and it can be included in your free seven-day trial. Of course, you need to be OK watching in French, and this still won’t get you the whole race for free (Fubo gets a bit pricey after the free trial), but it’s a nice option if you’re dead-set on watching a few stages without paying anything.

That’s not all. If you’ve used up your Fubo free trial , you can also get TV5Monde through Sling TV . The “French Bouquet” channel package–which can be found through the “International” tab on the top of Sling’s website–includes TV5Monde and is currently available for free for your first seven days (just $15 per month after that).

If you’re outside the United States, there may be some other international live-stream options available to you. But if that’s not the case, you can potentially watch the race with the help of a virtual private network ( VPN ). Peacock, Fubo and Sling are US-only, but a VPN can hide your location and make it look like you’re actually located in the US, thus allowing you to access these streaming services from abroad.

We’ve compiled a list of the the best VPN services and the best VPN deals , but if you’re looking for somewhere to start,  NordVPN is a good place to do that. It’s easily one of the top VPN ’s out there, plus it comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try it out free of risk.

After coming up seven goals short in their bid for a first-ever Stanley Cup, the Florida Panthers return home for Game 5 against the Edmonton Oilers tonight. The Panthers are still certainly in control of the series, but a loss here would make things significantly more uneasy, as the series would then head back to Edmonton for a Game 6.

Game 5 of the Stanley Cup is about to begin, at 8:00 p.m. ET. If you live in the United States and want to watch, it will be televised on ABC, but if you don't have cable and would rather watch a live stream, there are also a bevy of different ways you can stream the NHL playoffs. Is There a Free Oilers vs Panthers Game 5 Live Stream?

If you're new to boxing and want to catch all the bouts from the biggest stars in the sport, we can help you find the best and cheapest ways to watch boxing online. It can get complicated. Fighters are tied to specific promoters who are tied to specific streaming sites. The days of Friday night fights on network TV are long gone.

There are two main ways boxing is streamed: Pay-per-view fights and fights included in a monthly subscription. When a fight is a PPV, there's no way of getting around that fee. Some sites give subscribers a discount on the PPV price, but when you include subscription fees it ultimately costs the same. We'll be sure to show you the best ways to watch PPV boxing matches when they happen, but right now we'll focus on the various subscription services that give you access to regular fights.

Gervonta "Tank" Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) is making his long awaited return to the ring this weekend. In June of 2023 he got a decisive win over Ryan Garcia in the highest-selling PPV event since Mayweather-McGregor. Garcia took a knee after a crippling liver shot and couldn't beat the count. Davis has since spent a short stint in prison, which calls into question his readiness for the fight. Frank Martin (18-0, 12 KOs) is undefeated and may try to take advantage of Davis' long layoff.

The co-feature fight sees David Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs), the undefeated super middleweight who has long sought a fight with Canelo Alvarez, step up to the light heavyweight division and challenge Oleksandr Gvozdyk (20-1, 16 KOs) for the WBC Interim belt. Gvozdyk's only defeat was to Artur Beterbiev, another potential opponent for Benavidez if he wins tonight and decides to stay in the light heavyweight division.

Tour de France TV channel, start time and how to watch stage one online today

The Tour de France promises plenty of intriguing with a peloton packed with storylines battles across three weeks of racing.

For the first time, the Grand Tour will begin in Italy, with Florence hosting the Grand Depart and San Marino becoming the 14th country to be visited by a stage.

The finish to the race will look rather different, too, as a time trial in Nice replaces the traditional Champs-Elysees sprint due to the ongoing preparations for Paris 2024.

The individual time trial will be the first to conclude the Tour since 1989, when Greg LeMond memorably pipped Laurent Fignon in the closest edition in history.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the 2024 Tour de France.

When is the Tour de France?

The 2024 Tour de France will be held between June 29 and July 21 and consist of 21 stages, with two rest days included in the itinerary. The race will not finish in (or near) Paris for the first time since its inception as Nice is instead utilised — the French capital is out of action due to the Olympics later this summer.

Where is the Grand Depart?

The Grand Depart will be held in Italy for the first time, with Florence in Tuscany selected to begin the route. Stage 1 will finish in the coastal resort of Rimini, while the next three stages will also begin in Italy before the race crosses the border.

How long is the Tour?

In all, the peloton will cover 3,492km (2,170 miles) across 21 days of racing. Stage 3 (Piacenza to Turin) is the longest stage at 229km (142 miles), while the 133 km (83 miles) route on Stage 20 (Nice to Col de La Couillole) is the shortest road stage. There are two individual time trials: Stage 7 is 25km (16 miles), and the final stage from Monaco to Nice will be contested over 34km (21 miles).

How can I watch it?

Viewers in the United Kingdom will again have the choice of two broadcasters. ITV will provide free coverage on ITV4 and ITVX, while the Tour de France will also be available to subscribers on Eurosport and discovery+.

Eurosport’s coverage of the opening stage begins at 10.30am BST on Saturday 29 June, while ITV viewers can tune in from 10.45am.

If you’re travelling abroad and want to watch major sporting events, you might need a VPN to unblock your streaming app. Our VPN round-up is here to help and includes deals on VPNs in the market. Viewers using a VPN need to make sure that they comply with any local regulations where they are, and also with the terms of their service provider.

Who are the favourites for victory?

There are set to be four main contenders for general classification victory, though each of the quartet arrives with significant questions about their readiness for the year’s second Grand Tour. Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) will seek a three-peat but has not raced since sustaining a broken collarborne and other injuries in a serious crash at the Tour of the Basque Country in April.

Primoz Roglic (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) were also injured in the incident, though the pair returned to racing at the recent Criterium du Dauphine as Roglic took overall victory.

Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) meanwhile enters attempting a Giro-Tour double having secured the maglia rosa in Italy earlier this year — no male rider has won both races in a single season this century.

The Tour de France kicked off on Sunday, June 29 in Florence, Italy with a ridiculously challenging start to the 2024 edition.

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) moved into the coveted yellow jersey with a searing attack on the Côte de San Luca on stage 2, but he has three rivals tied with him in the Tour de France overall standings .

The race transfers further west on Monday to Piacenza for a much flatter 230.8km stage 3 with an expected sprint finish in Turin, where the tie-breaking rules will determine who wears yellow on Tuesday.

If riders are tied on time, the officials add up their finishing positions on each completed stage, and the rider with the lowest score takes the jersey. If that's still a tie, finishing position on the most recent stage determines the race leader.

  • Tadej Pogačar was 4th on stage 1 and 14th on stage 2 = 18
  • Remco Evenepoel: 8th + 12th = 20
  • Jonas Vingegaard: 16th + 13th = 29
  • Richard Carapaz: 22nd + 10th = 32

With an expected bunch sprint on stage 3 to Turin, expect the GC contenders to battle it out, too, to see who gets to wear the yellow jersey when the race heads into France.

The race reaches French soil on stage 4 with the first high mountain stage and the highest point of the Tour de France on the Col du Galibier. It's an extremely early entry into the Alps for the race and the first major test for all of the GC contenders.

Stage 5 is more normal territory for the first week of the Tour de France, with a 177.4km stage from Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne to Saint-Vulbas Plaine de l'Ain with just two category 4 climbs and another flat finish for the sprinters.
