The Best Places to Go Cycling in Quebec City

There are so many amazing places to go cycling in Quebec City. There are many Quebec City bike paths that are reserved for pedestrians or bicycles only, so you won’t have to worry about riding on the road. It’s possible to stick to paved paths around Quebec City, ride around the cobblestone streets of Old Quebec, or embark on an adventure to nearby waterfalls or the countryside! Here are a few popular routes to go biking in Quebec City, whether you’re a local or a tourist.

Corridor du Littoral

The Corridor du Littoral is part of the 5,300km Route Verte , North America’s longest network of bike trails. It extends across Quebec to Ontario, New Brunswick, and the USA, uniting the provinces by cycling paths. The Corridor du Littoral is a 50km flat section of trail along the St. Lawrence River that leads to Montmorency Falls.

On our bike ride on the Corridor du Littoral, we headed south along the St. Lawrence River, beside Boulevard Champlain. We rode past the spot where the ferry boats and cruise ships docked. This was the only place on the path where things could get a little bit congested if passengers were boarding the boats. Otherwise, the traffic along the paved path was fairly minimal.

Once we peddled past some shops and restaurants of Basse-Ville, Vieux Quebec (Lower Town, Old Quebec), we enjoyed views of interesting homes with winding staircases that were built against the rocky cliffs that divided the Upper Town and the Lower Town. On the other side, we enjoyed gorgeous views of the deep blue river. Eventually, this leads to Promenade Samuel-De Champlain, a landscaped park with beautiful scenery of the river and surroundings.

Corridor de la Rivière-Saint-Charles

Heading back to where we started at Old Port, we continued northwest on the Corridor de la Rivière-Saint-Charles. This is a loop cycling path on both sides of the Saint Charles River. In total, the Corridor de la Rivière-Saint-Charles is 9km and makes for a pleasant and easy ride with lovely scenery. You’ll also see the Cartier-Brébeuf National Historic Site on your journey.

Corridor des Cheminots

A third place to go cycling in Quebec City is the Corridor des Cheminots. It’s a 22km bike path that winds through the suburbs in the north end of the city. It traverses through urban landscapes and parks, connecting the north part of Quebec City with Old Quebec. It’s also part of the The Great Trail (Trans Canada Trail), the longest trail in the country.

Île d’Orléans (Le Circuit Félix-Leclerc)

If you’re looking for another place to go bike riding near Quebec City, I recommend cycling around Ile d’Orleans . It’s an island near Quebec City where you’ll discover stunning scenery, beautiful countryside, and farmers’ stalls to sample fresh produce. There are wineries on the island, too! You can cycle around the entire perimeter of the island (Le Circuit Félix-Leclerc). There aren’t any separate bike paths, and you’ll have to share the road with motorized vehicles. Cars drive fairly slowly and there are always many cyclists sharing the road in the summertime.

Quebec City Bike Rental

Justin and I didn’t need to use a Quebec City bike rental company because our hotel, Hotel 71 , offered them for free. We rented bicycles by the hour for no cost from our hotel. However, if you are unable to borrow bikes from your accommodation, there are several bike rental businesses in Quebec City. Ideally, you’ll choose one near Old Port and the St. Lawrence River, which proved to be an optimal place for cycling in Quebec City.

Here are some Quebec City bike rental companies where you can rent bikes for four hours or a full day (eight hours). There’s also the possibility of renting an electric bike for something a little different.

Why You Need to Go Biking in Quebec City

Riding a bike around town with the gentle breeze on my face was such a wonderful feeling. It was a great break from all of the walking we were doing around Quebec City. Cycling in Quebec City offers new perspectives of its old town and beyond, and you’re able to travel farther than walking. We were content to admire some new scenery from the bike paths.

It’s easy to find and use the bike paths. Head towards Old Port and the waterfront. You can also ride your bike on any city streets, but just be careful and mindful of the traffic and pedestrians if you choose to do this. I highly recommend using the paved cycling paths as it makes for a smooth ride and you don’t have to worry much about cars or road traffic.

As I mentioned above, Justin and I stayed at Hotel 71 in Old Quebec. We loved spending the night there for many reasons, one being the complimentary bike rentals. The building itself is an architectural gem, once home to the National Bank of Canada. We adored the modern elegance of our room and the views of the St. Lawrence River from our window. It’s also wonderful to always have access to delicious coffee, both in the room and downstairs in the public seating area.

The ferry was a beautiful way to see the old city and get to the south shore, where there is a lovely dedicated bike path along the St. Lawrence River, in the town of Lévis. A native of Quebec and retired schoolteacher, Guy delights in illuminating the landmarks and history of this beautiful country. After a break at a little coffee shop just off the bike path, we returned to Quebec City. This 4 hour, 20 mile tour was a perfect half day in Quebec and Guy was a delightful guide. It was so nice to be outside and to hear some of the history of that beautiful city. We don't speak French and thankfully Luc's English was flawless--and his knowledge of the city and his commentary on it really helped us to appreciate the city even more. As stated the tour lasts three hours--part of it was spent standing as we learned more about a specific monument or square and the rest was spent riding a bike trail where our reward was not only the beautiful scenery, but a delicious cappuccino at Brulerie Rousseau in Le Grand Marche. I just looked it up and it's a 4k bike ride from Le Grand Marche to the bike shop--not sure how far we went in total but we rode at least that far (so biked at least 8k?). On the way back we also got to bike through a few neighborhoods so we could see homes and areas we wouldn't have visited otherwise. My husband and I were the only two on the tour--we went on a Thursday morning in late September--and after seeing the huge crowds on the walking tours as we biked around with Luc it confirmed we made the right decision. Ferry ride from Quebec City to Levis . Cycle along the south shore of the St. Lawrence River to explore the fertile valleys of the Chaudiere-Appalaches following some of the Route Verte. Photo opportunities abound. (35 or 47 miles)

Take a shorter loop that winds through L'Islet , Cap-St-Ignace, and back to Montmagny, or take the longer option through St-Jean-Port-Joli, a unique town, considered a woodcarving mecca. Enjoy apple wine tasting at La Pomme St. Laurent, known for its unique cider ice wine. (34 or 52 miles)

Experience the beauty and history of Quebec’s King’s Road (Chemin du Roy) on a self-guided bike touring adventure. This multi-day cycling tour follows the heritage route stretching over 280 km/174 miles between Montreal and Quebec City, part of the Route Verte trail network. At the beginning of the 18th century, the French crown decreed the build of King’s Road alongside the St. Lawrence River. It crossed 37 seigneuries granted to nobles, merchants and religious congregations of New France. The subjects who made use of the land along the river were responsible for establishing the section of the road in front of their land. This feudal system of colonization and development resulted in the longest road north of the Rio Grande. Today you can cycle King’s Road and explore its many heritage sites, historical villages, beautiful landscape and the marvellous architecture of the old towns from the New France period. This adventure is also about enjoying the famous “joie de vivre” of the Quebecers, discovering wineries, savouring delicious local products fresh from the farmer’s markets and tasting local beer at one of many excellent microbreweries.

Introductory to moderate. The King's Road is a moderate, mostly flat, and paved 280 km/174 miles road cycling route with some bike paths, paved shoulders, and designated low-traffic road surfaces. Distances each day are short but cyclists should be prepared for some steep hills, especially near Quebec City. Self guided walking or cycling requires individuals to use problem solving skills, be adaptable and have a keen eye. It is recommended that you are comfortable map reading, referring to route notes and that you have a good sense of direction (or are willing to work on improving this!). Cyclists will be expected to know how to fix a flat tire and make basic adjustments to their bicycles using the included repair kit. Sometimes route finding, losing your way, finding it again and asking the locals for help is all part of the adventure. If you’ve never been on a self guided trip, after the first couple of days you will get the hang of if as the vast majority of our first time travellers attest. Please be assured that our written material issued to you for route finding is updated regularly and we provide a 7-day service hotline in the event of any problems.

Québec – The Blueberry Route Bike Tour

The Blueberry Route – the Véloroute des Bleuets – is a 160-mile paved cycling circuit around Saint-Jean Lake, north of Québec City. This is a great tour for energetic beginners or intermediate riders, as well as advanced riders who may want more miles. Spin along relatively flat routes through national parks surrounded by forested peaks. Ride along sapphire-blue lakeshores, through peaceful farmland and beside glittering rivers. Sample local delights from craft brews to handmade cheese to poutine, Québec’s most famous dish. Explore indigenous history, Québecois culture and the Historic Village of Val-Jalbert, a “Company Town of the 1920s.” Go on a wildlife cruise in Saguenay St. Lawrence Marine Park during the best time of the year for viewing (July).

Since pre-tour lodging is included for the night before the tour starts, we will pick you up at the Manoir Victoria in Quebec City early in the morning and shuttle (~2.5hrs) north to Alma on the southeast edge of gorgeous Lac Saint-Jean. With three national parks and a marine park totaling over 1,000 square miles, this giant playground is renowned for its outdoor-loving activities. After a bike fitting, take a spin along flat country roads and beside the sapphire blue lake in the Pointe Taillon National Park to the town of Dolbeau-Mistassini on the shore of the Mistassibi River. Stay tonight at the Motel Chute des Pères .

Continue on the Blueberry Route to Saint-Félicien. Stop at a Blueberry Museum on the way and enjoy waterfront lodging tonight.

After breakfast, hop back on your bike to continue your way along the Véloroute des Bleuets (The Blueberry Route). Take a side trip to Les Délices, a blueberry museum celebrating the region’s culinary history, then pedal on to Hotel du Jardin in the town of Saint-Félicien where we spend the night perched on the shores of Lac Saint-Jean.

Sample hand-crafted cheese, visit a an indigenous museum, and pedal into the past at the Historic Village of Val-Jalbert.

Stop at La Vieille Fromagerie Perron to experience (and sample) a rural cheese factory’s hand-crafted wares. Pedal to Communauté Innu de Mashteuiatsh, the nation’s oldest Innu reserve, where descendants of the region’s indigenous peoples have lived for over 6,000 years. Explore the museum’s collective exhibit and cultural site celebrating thousands of years of life stories of these nomadic people. Enjoy lunch here. Then continue riding to the Historic Village of Val-Jalbert, a 1920s company town complete with 40 or so original period buildings. Its convent-school, general store, pulp mill and massive waterfall offer plenty to explore. Stay here tonight in a 20’s-themed room with contemporary comforts at Village Historique de Val-Jalbert .

Don’t feel like you have to ride all the miles on today’s route, or tomorrow’s. Our guides can tailor the riding to suit your preferences. Ride from Val-Jalbert to Chicoutimi, an old French fur trading post on the banks of the Saguenay River. Now the central borough of the city of Saguenay, it’s a mecca for hikers, skiers and other active people. Along the way, visit the cheesemakers at La Fromagerie Lehmann. Taste the family’s artisanal cheeses made from milk produced by their little flock of Swiss Brown cows. Back on the bicycle, ride to visit The Little White House (La Petite Maison Blanche), a symbol of hope and perseverance which survived two floods, standing for four days with waters raging around its foundation. Overnight at Hotel Chicoutimi or Hotel du Fjord Chicooutimi .

Ferry across a large river, the Saguenay, to cycle along a smaller river, the Ste-Marguerite, to spend the night on the banks of an enormous river, the St. Lawrence, in charming Tadoussac village.

Ride east along the Saguenay River to La Baie, third of the Saguenay city boroughs. Pedal onto a ferry and cross to Sainte-Rose-du-Nord on the other side. Bicycle quiet roads through farms and fields bordering the Sainte-Marguerite River, soaking up the views of lakes, forest lands and mountain peaks. Finish today’s ride where the river meets the giant St. Lawrence River in Tadoussac. Spend tonight at the Hotel Tadoussac with its red roof and whitewashed walls, enjoying views of Tadoussac Bay and the St. Lawrence River.

Go for a wildlife cruise in Saguenay St. Lawrence Marine Park in the morning (included). Cycle, hike or relax on your own in the afternoon.

The St. Lawrence estuary at Tadoussac is a feeding zone for three types of whales: the fin whale, the minke whale and the giant blue whale. This morning, take a 2-hour Wildlife Cruise through the heart of the Saguenay St. Lawrence Marine Park to see these majestic mammals. This afternoon, there’s a 38-mile out-and-back optional ride north beside the St. Lawrence River to the town of Les Escoumins. Or there is also a 2.5-mile hike to Anse à la Barque on the Sentier du Fjord. Lunch is on your own today.

Pedal “Avenue Royal” past a beautiful basilica and celebrate a wonderful week at Montmorency Falls. Explore Quebec City. Your lodging is included tonight!

Continue past the lovely Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré basilica to view the magnificent Montmorency waterfall. At 272-feet, it’s one and a half times higher than Niagara Falls. One of the best ways to explore a city is by bike. Not only is it eco-friendly, it’s also great exercise, and allows you to explore the city like a local. Quebec City is the perfect place to rent a bike and explore and I’m going to strongly suggest (and write a whole article) why I recommend doing a fat bike rental or fat bike guided tour in Quebec City. The reasoning can be summed up into two words: cobblestone streets.

Old Town Quebec is lined with the most beautiful cobblestone streets that are hundreds of years old. With the uneven roadway, riders on a fat bike simply glide over the rough terrain. Do you want to soar up the side hills and back alleys? A fat electric bike (e-bike) is the perfect adventure companion. I can say this as we recently did a winter guided e-bike tour in Quebec City and it was the perfect combination of adventure and education. I have put together this guide to give you everything you need to plan your bike tour as well as some of our behind-the-scenes pictures from our experience.

We were welcomed to take a guided fat bike tour with Tuque & Bicycle Experiences, located in the heart of Old Town Quebec at the intersection of Rue Saint Paul and Rue des Navigateurs. Locally and female-owned, Tuque & Bicycle Experiences was founded by 23-year-old Émilie Pelletier in 2020, and four years later is now one of the premier fat bike rental businesses in Quebec City. When you choose to rent from Tuque & Bicycle Experiences you are:

Compared to a traditional bike, the large-width tires on a fat bike have larger treads, allowing the bike to grip the cobblestones and the rider to flow effortlessly as they pedal. The tires also are inflated to a very low pressure which allows them to act as suspension and absorb most of the shock ensuring maximum comfort for the rider. But other than the large tires, the bikes function very similarly to other bicycles, so if you can ride a bike you can ride a fat bike!

I always love having a guide when I am learning a new skill as it cuts down the learning curve and helps me get to the “adventure” part of the experience faster! Once you are fitted for your bike, your guide will take you on some beginner roads in Old Town Quebec and then you will head out and check out more of the sights around the city. As this is an introductory tour, most of the roads/trails are relatively flat and as accessible as possible helping ensure a successful first trip on the fat bike!

If you want to take in as much of the city as possible, explore Old Town Quebec, and get out into the cityside trails, then their 3-hour guided bike experience is the tour for you. This is the tour that we did when we were visiting Quebec City during Carnaval and it was the perfect combination of eco-adventure, history tour, and cultural immersion. One of the biggest benefits of this tour is that it comes with a certified Quebec City guide who was constantly stopping to share fun and hidden facts that we would have missed had we not had a guide (thanks Denise!). Here’s an example:

When we were visiting the Petit Champlain Courtyard we noticed that most of the buildings looked like they were 400 or more years old, but their looks were quite deceiving. On October 14, 1866, there was, what is now known as The Great Fire of Quebec City. On that night, 2500-3000 buildings burnt down and 20,000 people lost their homes. In the 1970’s during a restoration process, a lot of buildings were replaced, with what looked like homes from centuries ago, to help maintain the heritage and the history of the city. I was standing in front of a series of three houses in front of Petite Champlain and had assumed they were centuries old when I was almost older than them! 

So having a certified guide is worth the tour itself, but you also get to go riding beyond the traditional streets and into back alleys, and side streets with history. Be sure to ask your guide for tips on the best places to eat and drink too, as we all know, the best places to eat in a city are where the locals tell you to go!

I was very surprised at how affordable the prices were, ranging from $20 per hour to $120 for an all-inclusive, professionally guided experience. Here’s the exact breakdown of each of the services to help you decide which is right for you:

• 1-2 Hours: $40.00
• 2-4 Hours: $57.00
• 1-4 Hours: $50.00

An electric fat bike is just like a traditional fat bike, only less work and more fun! As you can tell, I am a huge fan of e-bikes, as the electric pedal assist allows you to travel further with the same amount of effort, thus leading to longer adventures.

• Riders maximum weight can not exceed: 275 lbs (125 kg)

In Quebec City, you are allowed to ride an electric bicycle from the age of 14 as long as you hold a class 6D license. If you do not have this license, then you need to be a minimum of 18 years old to ride an e-bike in Quebec City.

How to Prepare for Your Bike Rental In Quebec City

If you are using your phone to navigate Quebec City, there are a few recommendations for how to make your trip successful. This includes: 

• Keep your phone warm! If you are heading out in the winter, keep the phone close to your body (like an inside pocket) so that the cold weather doesn’t drain the battery.
• Use a credible navigation app such as Google or Trail Forks. 
• Tip from Tuque & Bicycle Experiences – When riding on a cold winter day, try not to look at your phone too much. Every time you bring out your phone you have to take your hands out of your gloves, making your fingers cold, which can lead to cold hands (I love this tip as it’s so practical and true!).

Safety Gear and What To Wear

The best biking experience is a safe one, so here are some of the safety tips and requirements when doing a Quebec City bicycle rental:

Helmets are required for riders and will be provided by Tuque & Bicycle Experiences. They are disinfected between each use. If you have your own helmet you are allowed to bring it, as long as it is light and doesn’t impair your hearing (ski helmets are not the right fit). Wear a thin toque that covers your ears under your helmet for the most comfort and warmth. You can borrow this from Tuque & Bicycle Experiences as well. 

Rider Tip: Don’t wear a hat that has a pompom. It’s not safe. If you have one that you want to take a photograph with, pack it in a pocket or a backpack.

When planning for your bike ride be sure to think in layers! This includes: 

• Base layer (not cotton), that wicks away the sweat
• Warm layer – fleece and cozy 
• Outer layer – Windproof and winter-rated jacket and pants 
• Two layers of clean dry socks 
• Toque, thin that will fit under a helmet
• Scarf, balaclava or neck gaiter
• Warm winter boots 
• Mittens or gloves. Mittens are recommended during colder weather as your fingers stay together, creating more heat and staying warmer for longer
• Small backpack, as you want to be hands-free during your ride 
• Bottle of water 
• Snack (granola bars are perfect) 
• Tissues 
• Sunglasses and sunscreen if it’s a nice beautiful day
• Fully charged phone (and a battery backup if needed) 
• Camera gear
• Bring clean, dry socks and put them on right before you start your bike experience. This will help ensure that your toes are as warm and dry as possible before you head out. 
• Bring a balaclava or neck gaiter! This is the one thing that so many people forget and having a cold neck can send chills down your whole body. This can also be pulled up to cover your chin and cheeks which can be helpful if you’re going fast on an e-bike and have the wind hitting your face. 
• Make sure your ears are covered either with a toque or headband (make sure they are thin enough to fit under a helmet).  
• Dress in layers so that the sweat is pulled away from your skin and out the exterior layers. 
• Ride the bike! Riding is a great exercise that will naturally keep you warm. So enjoy the stops along the way but try to keep moving as much as possible on really cold days so that you can keep moving and stay warm!

Fat biking was founded in Alaska in the 1980s by a group of mountain bikers who wanted to ride their bikes for all four seasons of the year. At the same time, bikers in New Mexico were developing fat bikes so they could ride on the sand dunes. Fat bikes are perfect on sand and snow!

You will find that most of the people you encounter in Quebec City (those in the tourism industry and locals) will speak French as their first language but what impresses me is their ability to instantly switch and speak English once they recognize it’s your language (which if you’re reading this article in English, I’m assuming it is). I don’t speak French but had no problems as everyone was so helpful once they realized this, and quickly changed over to English to be able to communicate with me.

This bike tour to Quebec starts in the lakeside city of Burlington, Vermont. from where we bike north, tracing the Richelieu and St. Lawrence rivers to Quebec City. Explore charming Burlington, VT, and its vibrant dining scene. Cycle through the patchwork farmland of the Champlain Islands to the Canadian border, where you’ll follow the Chambly Canal to Fort Chambly and the Richelieu River through small towns and past historic churches until it confluences with the mighty St. Lawrence River. We Ferry across the St. Lawrence to ride the Chemin du Roy, the original route between Montreal and Quebec City. Ride along the St. Lawrence’s north shore, stop to sample local cheese at an organic fromagerie, then enter Quebec City via the Promenade-Samuel-de-Champlain bike path. Cycle through the rural oasis of Ile d’Orleans, a predominantly agricultural island in the middle of the St. Lawrence. Head north through the patchwork farmland of the Champlain Islands to the Canadian border. The route is gently rolling to the border then flattens out almost immediately after passing through Canadian customs.

Follow the Chambly Canal to Fort Chambly at the foot of the rapids on the Richelieu River. The route parallels the river through small towns clustered around architecturally imposing churches where it meets the mighty St. Lawrence.

Begin your day with a ferry trip across the St. Lawrence. Ride the Chemin du Roy, the original route between Montréal and Québec City, and one of the oldest routes in North America. Spin past colorful barns painted in typical Québecois style.

Ride along the north shore of the St. Lawrence through some of Québec’s most beautiful villages. Visit an organic fromagerie to sample local cheese. Enter Québec City on the stunning Promenade-Samuel-de-Champlain bike path.

• Level of Riding: This is rated as an intermediate trip, with most of that rating being based on the duration of the trip. In terms of elevation, the proximity of the St. Lawrence river results in minimal climbing. The longest day is 85 miles, but the van is always available to shuttle you to the final destination if you are no longer having fun. 
• Routing and Scheduling : The itinerary we provide can change on a certain day in terms of restaurant time, road closures, and weather conditions. Our leaders are fully trained at offering alternate plans and solutions. We seek your cooperation and promise to deliver the best vacation experience regardless.
