What to do in York

• York Minster No trip to York would be complete with a visit to  York Minster , the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe which took an incredible 250 years to build. So big it even has its own police force, it’s spectacular from the outside, but inside its sheer size and scale are jaw-dropping - in fact the Leaning Tower of Pisa would fit inside the central tower. Admission is free, as are guided tours, although a donation is asked for. So climb up for fantastic views, or simply stand and admire the detail on the stained glass windows. All the faces have tiny eyelashes, an amazing achievement for craftsmen back in the 1400s and even more remarkable when you consider the windows were 100ft from the ground, so such tiny details would never be seen. • National Railway Museum If you’re in York on a family city break, walk directly to the  National Railway Museum  because it’s unbelievably intriguing - and free. Travel back in time to when locomotives ruled the tracks at this, the largest railway museum in the world. You don’t need to be an engineer to enjoy seeing the Flying Scotsman or the only Japanese bullet train outside of Japan. Equally fascinating are the stories. In the days before radio communication, if train cooks ran out of supplies, they’d put a note in a potato and throw it at the signaller, who’d telegraph ahead to the next station.
• Party like a Viking Over 1,000 years ago, York was under Viking rule. Every February, the Vikings would celebrate ‘Jolablot’, a feast to mark the end of the winter and the coming of spring. Today, the Norse tradition has been revived and for the last 30 or so years, Vikings from all over the globe (and 40,000 visitors) descend on the town every February half term for family-friendly events, battle re-enactments and the popular ‘Best Beard’ competition. But if you’re not lucky enough to be in town when the festival is on, you can still get a Viking fix at the Jorvik centre.Great for all ages, it’s the only attraction of its kind based on a real archaeological dig. More of an adventure than a museum, you’ll go back in time to a reconstructed Viking village, complete with smells and sounds.
• Enjoy a day at York races York is famous for horse-racing - it’s a tradition here that goes back 2,000 years from the times of the Romans and Vikings. And  York Racecourse  is one of the finest in the country, full of listed buildings and character making it very popular among the 60,000 people who visit each year. The racecourse runs 17 racedays from May to October, and they’re very popular. But the real attraction is the Ebor Festival. Held over four days in August the city fills up with well-dressed racegoers in all their finery.
• Get scared silly in York In York for Halloween? You’re in luck. York was officially named the Most Haunted City in Europe by the International Ghost Research Foundation. Treasurer’s House in York is home to one of the most famous apparitions in the UK. The house was built over what was once a Roman thoroughfare, and in the 1950s a heating engineer saw a legion of Roman soldiers, visible only from the knees up, marching through one of the cellar walls. Take your pick of one of the many Ghost Walks on offer (held after it gets dark, naturally). Don’t like to walk? Take the Ghost Bus. It’s an old 1960s Routemaster with a creepy conductor providing a running commentary.
• Walk the wall A great way to get a feel for the city is to head upwards for a stroll along the limestone city walls. It’s free to access - just head to Museum Gardens, behind the cathedral for the best starting point. It takes about two hours to walk the five kilometre circuit. Not to be missed are the battlements at Micklegate, where traitors like William Wallace met a gristly end.
• Eat some chocolate York is Britain’s chocolate capital, with a long history in confectionary which continues to this day - both the Kit Kat and the Chocolate Orange being its most famous exports. Take the York Chocolate Trail by picking up a map at the visitor information centre - it takes you on a walk around the city’s best confectioners. Final stop on the Trail is York’s Chocolate Story, an interactive museum that gives a fascinating glimpse into York’s chocolate making past (and lots of opportunities for tasting).
• Have afternoon tea York is teeming with quaint tea rooms, but if you like your Earl Grey with a huge helping of 1930s glamour, head to Bettys on St Helen’s Square. Everything about it is utterly charming, from the smart waiting staff and fine crockery, to the fabulous art deco interior. Try their signature Fat Rascals - plump, juicy scones decorated with almonds and cherries.
• Shuffle down The Shambles Crammed with buildings more than 500 years old,  The Shambles  is believed to be the oldest shopping street in Europe. And it looks it - higgledy piggledy timber-framed buildings that lean together so they seem to touch at the top. Once known as The Great Flesh Shambles, a number of the hooks that butchers used to hang out their meat are still visible on the buildings. Nowadays, you’re more likely to pick up a souvenir than a side of beef though.
• Simply get lost If you’re on a family break in York, you’ll be pleased to hear there’s plenty to keep the noisiest family members quiet. Take York Maze, created from over one million living maize plants. Open every summer, it’s the largest maze in the UK. Kids will love finding their way round with a compass - and you are allowed to cheat and buy a map.
• Enjoy a pint or two Famously, there’s meant to be a  pub in York  for every day of the year. But if you want a pub with a massive helping of history, head to Stonegate to the Grade II listed Ye Olde Starre Inne. The pub was first licensed in 1644 – meaning it has the longest continuous licence of any pub in York. Warm yourself by the open fire, enjoying a real ale while you hear stories about the pub ghosts - an old lady and two black cats.

Each of the 12 rooms has been individually decorated, features antique feature, tea/coffee making facilities and complimentary toiletries. Some of the rooms also feature a landmark view.

Helpful, friendly staff. Room as quaint and comfortable. The restaurant is outstanding. You cannot beat the location, just a very short walk to the Minster cathedral. Overall, a wonderful experience. Would definitely go there again.

Masons Arms 4 stars

Attractively set in York, Masons Arms features air-conditioned rooms, a restaurant, free WiFi and a bar. This 4-star inn offers a range of water sports facilities and room service. The property is non-smoking and is situated 1.5 km from York Railway station.

The staff were really friendly and made us feel very welcome. Great pub and an easy walk into town.

Due to the nature of the premises, although we do try our absoloute best to maintain our guests comfort, a level of noise is to be expected due to the Guest Accommodation being located above a popular Public Bar and situated on a main road.We do endeavour to keep this reasonable and limit opening hours etc but the historic character of the Inn does mean it is not completely sound proof. We do politely ask guests to be mindful of this before booking with us.

The people were very welcoming and made us feel very comfortable during our stay. Gave us password to wifi on arrival and said if we needed anything just to ask. Would definitely stay again. Lovely rustic garden too. Great quiz night too!!

It is walking distance to the walled city of York. The room looked like it had been recently renovated. Very comfy and clean. Food and drink very reasonable and more than enough.

In the Centre of York, with free parking and WiFi. and a walled garden courtyard the inn is located 600 metres from York Minster and 300 metres from York City Walls. All rooms in the inn are fitted en suite bathrooms, flat-screen TVs and tea and coffee making facilities.

Fundamental for being in the York centre, the inn has parking space inside. Despite being on top of a pub, the place was considerably quiet at night.

Standing next to York Minster, Guy Fawkes Inn , Sure Hotel Collection by Best Western was the birthplace of the notorious plotter, Guido Fawkes. The Inn offers en-suite rooms with free WiFi, flat-screen TV’s and AA Rosette Food.

Quirky, well appointed suite in the eaves with a wonderful outlook. Lots of stairs rewarded us with a most unusual place to stay.

Our stay at The Travel Inn was perfect! From the price of room and the low cost of parking to the very helpful staff...we couldn't of asked for any more for our first time in New York. Subway couple blocks away, Times Square very close,and a friendly and good diner right next door. We had street facing room and barely heard a thing. Hotel room, lobby and pool very clean. One more great thing about The Travel Inn...check out is at 12:00 but they let you keep your car ther until 3:00. A+++

Lovely hotel and great location”

Honestly, I wasn't to thrilled about staying at Travel Inn at first. But once my daughter and I got there, we felt right at home. The room is spacious and there's a microwave, refrigerator and lots of electric plug-ins. The bathroom is a tad small, but it's not an issue. The location, for us, is perfect. There's a Chinese food restaurant at the end of the street, as well as a laundry service (by the pound), and a nice little convenience store. Across the street from the hotel is also a CVS. And right next to the hotel is a deli that opens until late in the afternoon. You don't have to look farther for a hearty meal or breakfast. Also, it's really close to Times Square and you won't have any problem finding a place to eat. The only downside is the front desk staff can be a bit unfriendly, though they try. I don't know if they were stressed out because of the upcoming Marathon or whatnot, but I asked to extend my stay several times and they didn't seem too happy to give me information and alternatives. The operator is really nice, though. She really helped us find an alternative to stay at the hotel for a few more days after Sandy hit NY because our flight had been cancelled. On my next trip, I'd definitely stay here again.

The room was clean, comfortable, and had a microwave and refrigerator. Grocery store one block up. Our room was on the north side. The train runs right by, but the noise did not bother us. It is very close to to the Port Authority Bus Terminal and Subway. Hell's Kitchen is one block away, with great dining selection. We walked to the theater district and Time Square after we discovered that is was only about four to five blocks away. We took the bus and then the subway to and from the airport. It was only $2.50 each and easy to do. Would only suggest doing that if bringing one small piece of luggage. We would stay at The Travel Inn again if returning to NYC.

Nice hotel with nice rooms”

We had 4 people in a double double room, and even with all our stuff, it did not feel cramped. The room was clean and well-decorated and the beds were comfortable. The location was on the famous 42nd street of New York City, but far enough away from the hustle and bustle of 7th avenue to be quiet and restful. We definitely recommend this hotel!

Nice stay. Some challenges, but they were easily resolved with a kind helpful staff. The wifi were better in the main-building (same as reception was located). Rather special is that you eat your breakfast and lunch at the nearest neighbour - which also is administered by Travel Inn - together with visitors coming in from street. But it worked - and have a nice and friendly staff. Overall we will not hesitate to bill a new stay in Travel Inn, when we come back to NYC in the future Thank you for a pleasent stay Pleasent couple from Faroe Islands

Shame the bathroom was wet.

The hotel was spotless and glorious, had stable wi-fi. The room I booked was well soundproofed and simply decorated. Early check-in, late check-out. Besides, parking was available on-site. It was perfectly located. Also - just off a police station, many restaurants and Times Square.

Stuffed leather couches and dark wood paneling in the lobby are just some of the details that make the hotel look dated. The hotel's common areas have seen better days, and the rooms are also worn. Some of the rooms overlook busy street traffic, while the inner rooms open onto the outdoor courtyard for a motel-like feel.

On a charmless block, a 15-minute walk from Times Square

The Travel Inn is located on a busy but bland stretch of 42nd Street on Manhattan's West Side. The hotel is three long avenue blocks from Times Square -- far away enough to avoid insane crowds, but within walking distance of more than 10 major subway lines -- and several blocks south of the heart of Hell's Kitchen, a lively neighborhood with restaurants and bars. Hudson River Park is also close by, and offers sightseeing cruises and seasonal activities like bike rentals.

Rooms at the Travel Inn are functional and spacious, but dated

The majority of rooms at the Travel Inn feature basic furniture and bland decor. The flat-screen TVs are a notable bonus. Rooms facing the central courtyard and on the upper floors are less susceptible to noise from the street and the subway running underground. Avoid the North Tower, which requires guests to walk through a parking garage to get to the elevator. The hotel is in the middle of a renovation, and several rooms have been upgraded to a brighter, more modern look. New furniture, impressive bathrooms, and better amenities (including iPod docking stations, microwaves, and mini-fridges) make these rooms more desirable. All rooms feature Ecossential toiletries, hairdryers, and ironing facilities. 

On-site amenities are few, but the outdoor pool is a nice perk

The Travel Inn doesn't have a ton of amenities, but that helps keep rates low for travelers mostly interested in a good-value (and well-located) place to crash. A large supervised pool in the hotel's open-air courtyard is open seasonally and is a rare find for the price. The hotel does have a business and a fitness center, but they're small and sad-looking with few machines and computer stations respectively. There is no on-site restaurant or bar, though there is a diner next door. A parking garage next door charges a moderate daily fee.

In Kyoto, Five Hotels to Add to Your Travel Wish List

The city’s newest crop of hotels — from a luxury retreat on a historic estate to a 10-room inn surrounded by forested mountains — were worth the wait.

The pandemic lockdown in Japan coincided with a flurry of new hotels, especially in Kyoto, where the Park Hyatt, Aman and Four Seasons were joined by a group of independent properties and the first Ace hotel in the archipelago. When the country finally reopened to foreign visitors in October 2022, tourists came flooding back to the city of 800-year-old temples and bamboo forests spoiled for choice of accommodations, at a range of prices. The number continues to grow: Next month, the wellness-focused Six Senses brand will open its first Japanese outpost in the city’s Higashiyama district, home to many of the main tourist sites. Here, a look at five of Kyoto’s newer hotels that are redefining the city’s hospitality scene.

Hotel the Mitsui Kyoto

Andre Fu, the interior designer behind hotels like the Upper House in Hong Kong and Villa La Coste in Aix-en-Provence, France, has infused his signature aesthetic (extravagantly refined, with warm woods and luxurious textures) within the confines of a particularly historic area of Kyoto. The 161-room Mitsui, opened in late 2020, sits across from Nijo Castle, an enormous 17th-century compound and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s in stark contrast to the hotel, whose only timeworn element is an imposing entrance gate — a traditional wood structure over 300 years old and a remnant of the days when the Mitsui family lived on the grounds. Once past the gate, you’ll find a glass-and-steel building, designed by the Japanese architect Akira Kuryu, and landscaping that’s meant to echo the original garden pathways of the Mitsui residence, planted with cherry trees and steppingstones that meander above a glassy pond. The four food and drink venues include the French-Japanese Toki, overseen by the chef Tetsuya Asano (previously of the Ritz Paris), and the Garden Bar, strategically positioned to capture seasonal views, like the spring cherry blossoms and blazing autumnal foliage, out of massive double windows. Rooms from about $1,360 a night.

Ace Hotel Kyoto

The youthful Ace hotel brand might seem like an odd fit in staid Kyoto. But this 213-room property, which opened in 2020, fits seamlessly into the city center thanks to a collaboration between the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and the California-based design firm Commune. Kuma, who designed the Japan National Stadium (the centerpiece of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics), renovated the imposing 1920s-era, red brick Kyoto Central Telephone Office, while adding an industrial-looking building — sheathed in copper sulfide plating, cedar, glass and concrete — next door. Commune infused the guest rooms with Ace’s signature mix of bright colors and patterns: original dyed prints from the Japanese folk artist Samuro Yunoki sit alongside Tivoli radios, turntables and vintage records. The most popular part of the hotel, though, might be the street-level branch of Stumptown Coffee Roasters — the first in Japan. From about $300 a night.

Arashiyama House Mama

Like Kyoto’s dozens of temple gardens, this 10-room property offers an immediate sense of calm. Its entrance is so discreet, you could easily miss it. (Look for the flowing white cloth curtain with simple black signage, behind which is a garden path leading to a minimalist building made of wood, concrete and glass.) The hotel’s location informs the interior design: Thirty minutes west of central Kyoto, the Arashiyama district is defined by nature, with the Katsura River at its center, and filled with bamboo groves and surrounded by forested mountains. Guest rooms are simply furnished with beds, chairs and tables handmade by both Kyoto artisans and the Danish furniture maker Carl Hansen & Son, and each one has a soaking tub. Rooms from about $540 a night.

The Shinmonzen

The Gion district epitomizes Kyoto for many visitors, with its maze of narrow alleys and ryokans, traditional Japanese inns. It’s here, on a quiet side street among artists’ studios, antique shops and galleries, that the Shinmonzen opened in December 2021. Although it’s a new build, the aim was for the hotel to blend in with the surrounding structures. To accomplish this, the famed Japanese architect Tadao Ando created a wooden facade that replicates a machiya , one of the venerable townhouses found throughout Kyoto. There are only nine guest rooms, but they’re unusually spacious, and all have balconies with views of the Shirakawa River. Each one is an ode to Japanese interior elements, furnished with tatami mats, shoji (panels lined with rice paper) and cypress soaking tubs. And for dining, the chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, whose restaurant empire spans the world, devised a menu blending French, American and Asian influences, sourcing much of the produce from local farms. Rooms from about $1,500 a night.

Maana Kiyomizu

A three-suite hotel near the 16th-century Toyokuni Shrine, Maana Kiyomizu is the latest offering from Maana Homes, the small local hospitality group, which operates two other properties in the city. This one, opened in the winter of 2022, is located in Higashiyama, and is a complex of four machiya that also houses POJ Studio — a boutique that sells artisanal Japanese crafts and home goods. There’s also Kissa Kishin, the second branch of a popular Gion cafe, which serves coffee, matcha and pastries and acts as the unofficial social center for the property. The Japanese architects Uoya Shigenori and Takeshi Ikei renovated the suites to create a minimalist wabi-sabi ideal of city living, where handmade pottery from Shigaraki (a town famous for its ceramics) are the only decorative flourishes to be found. Rooms from about $560 a night.
