Shoresh Study Tours
General information, contact details.
In-depth teaching on the Jewish roots of the Christian faith. The sights and sounds of modern and ancient Israel. Fellowship with local Israeli believers. Since 1986, this is what we've offered on Shoresh Study Tours - a unique experience of the Land of Israel and chance to know the God of Israel better. Come and see for yourself.
Why Shoresh?
Shoresh is a non-denominational ministry and all of our staff and tour guides are committed followers of Jesus. Shoresh is Hebrew for root. Since Yeshua Himself is the root, we focus on Him. In doing so, we take into account the fact that historically Yeshua acted and spoke as a Jew amongst Jews in the Land of Israel. Our study tours are designed to give you new ears to hear biblical teachings in their original context and to help you grasp the Jewish roots of the New Testament faith.
Any number of tour companies can take you to the usual historical sites, fun attractions and restaurants-attached-to-tourist-shops that every tourist to Israel is made to visit. It’s true that Shoresh Study Tours will make sure you see all the important biblical sites, and then some (although we may skip a few of those shops). However, every place we go, every lesson that we present, and every experience we prepare for you revolves around a much more far-reaching goal: we want our tours to be used by God to make loving disciples of Yeshua (Jesus) – people who know God’s love for them and share it with others.
Join a Shoresh Study Tour and be introduced both to God’s heart for the spiritual rebirth of the Jewish people and to the living body of Messiah in Israel, composed of Jews, Arabs and others. We hope that having experienced what the God of Israel is doing in the Land today, you’ll take home a deeper understanding of Messiah and a vision for the salvation of Israel, and will add your prayers to that end.

Lecture: 175th anniversary of christ church jerusalem.
Christ Church Jerusalem was consecrated on January 21, 1849. This year we celebrate 175 years of ministry in the Old City. In celebration, we hosted a lecture by Dr. Richard Harvey, a historian and theologian. He holds a PhD in Religious Studies from the University of Wales (Lampeter).

Jewish Believers Holocaust Project
Our colleague Kelvin Crombie is working on a very special research project. For the first time someone is systematically surveying the fate of Jewish believers in Jesus (Hebrew Christians/Messianic Jews) who suffered during World War II. Up until now it has not been widely known that many thousands of such Jews died at the hands of Nazi Germany and their allies.
Very little hard evidence, figures, and stories have ever been assembled about these victims, and their tragedy largely remains an untold chapter in the history of the Holocaust. Kelvin is in the process of
- collecting testimonies,
- compiling names of victims, and
- analysing how Jewish Christians were rounded up and murdered across Europe.
This is a giant and difficult task at which Kelvin has been labouring for several years. Please remember to pray for him and his groundbreaking research. Pray especially that historic material on these believers (sometimes known as non-Aryan Christians) will come to light in order that Kelvin may complete the project.

We will trace the life of Jesus from His home in Galilee to Jerusalem, giving particular attention to the influence of Jewish thought and culture of the period on the origins of Christianity. Our goal is a better understanding of Jesus’ ministry, His place among the Jewish people, and the application of His teachings for us today.
Day 1: Arrival in the Land of Promise
From Tel Aviv airport we travel to our hotel on the coast of Netanya. A time to relax from the flight before we share in a traditional Shabbat dinner in the evening. Overnight in Netanya.
Day 2: Nazereth
We will see today the remains of the Herodian city of Caesarea Maritima where Paul set sail with the Gospel. We will visit Mount Carmel for a spectacular view over the North of Israel where Elijah showed “who’s God was God”! We end the day at a Nazereth Village, a re-created First Century Village where we will examine the “living stones” of a reconstructed village and village life. Overnight stay by the Sea of Galilee.
Day 3: The Sea of Galilee‚ The Life of Jesus’ Disciples
Our day will be spent exploring the places where Jesus began his Ministry. We visit Kibbutz Ginosar where we will see a fishing boat from the time of Jesus before a boat trip on the Lake. Here we will enjoy the views, have a time of worship and quiet reflection.
After landing on the northern shore we will visit sites which include where Jesus declared the Beatitudes and ending in Capernaum before returning to our hotel.
Day 4: The Golan Heights
As we climb towards Mt. Hermon, the highest in Israel, we will consider the Transfiguration and visit Banias, near Ceasarea Philippi, an archeological site of pagan worship. Our day will end with a visit to the Golan Heights Winery at Katzrin before we return to our hotel for our last night in Galilee.
Day 5: The Dead Sea Scrolls
Travelling south along the Jordan valley, we will go to Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu (a pioneer of organic agriculture) and Kibbutz Alfa, before entering the Judean wilderness to visit Qumran, site of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Our day will end at a hotel on the edge of the Dead Sea, with time to relax and enjoy a “swim”!
Day 6: Masada
Masada, Herod the Great’s fortress in the wilderness, is where our day begins before experiencing Bedouin hospitality and a camel ride in the desert. Then a visit to a subtropical oasis at Ein Gedi before our ascent to the City of the Great King, Jerusalem! After dinner at our hotel, there is a rooftop stroll for an amazing view of the Old City and a talk by the Director of Shoresh Study Tours. Overnight in Jerusalem.
Day 7: Yad Vashem & A Free Afternoon
After breakfast we will leave the Old City and travel to a viewpoint that overlooks the hills of Ephrata and Bethlehem before a visit to Yad VaShem, The Israel Holocaust History Museum. The afternoon is free for rest, worship and reflection, shopping or (for the energetic), perhaps a walk on the walls of the Old City. Overnight in Jerusalem.
Day 8: Jerusalem, in the Time of Jesus
Beginning at the base of the Temple Mount, we visit the Southern Steps, the Western Wall and then walk in tunnels under the Temple Mount. Our evening meal will be a traditional Shabbat dinner. Overnight in Jerusalem.
Day 9: The Steps of Jesus: Cross to Resurrection
Before walking down from the Mount of Olives to Gethsemane, we visit a tomb from the time of Jesus, before visiting the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the “Man in the Shroud” exhibition and ending at The Garden Tomb for a time of reflection. Our day ends with a celebration of a Jewish Passover meal. Overnight in Jerusalem.
Day 10: Jaffa
Time permitting according to flight times, we descend this morning through the mountains of Judea to the Mediterranean coast where we will tour Old Jaffa. It was here that Jonah set sail to flee from God’s call and where, centuries later, God gave Peter a vision that resulted in the spread of the Gospel to the Gentiles. In the afternoon we head to the airport to catch our flight home.
More about visiting Israel for the first time
There are many ways in which CMJ can facilitate your next trip to Israel – whether it is your first visit, or one of many. You could join one of our tours , stay in one of our three guest houses in Jerusalem , Tel Aviv , or the Galilee . Or you might consider spending longer in Israel, in which case becoming a volunteer at one of our guest houses may be the best option for you.
How Safe is Israel for Tourists?
There are so many stories about the troubles in Israel and the Middle East, how safe is Israel to visit? And when there, how safe will you be as tourists? And what does the Country have to offer - especially if I don’t want to do the "Bible-style" tours? Hopefully on this page, you will find out all the information you need.

About CMJ SA
Church's ministry among the jewish people.
CMJ SA works inter-denominationally with congregations to increase awareness of the Jewish roots of the Christian faith, to combat antisemitism in society and foster respectful conversations between Jews and Christians about our common and divergent beliefs.
CMJ SA seeks to equip individuals and local congregations to:
- Understand and value the Jewish roots of the Christian faith, countering common misperceptions about Judaism and the Hebrew scriptures (Old Testament).
- Fight growing antisemitism in the church and South African society, including Holocaust denialism.
- Foster respectful conversations between Jews and Christians about our common and divergent beliefs.
We affirm the Apostles' and Nicene Creeds as essential and sufficient statements of faith.
We affirm that the Church has always been comprised of Jews and Gentiles. The truths and practices of historic Christianity have been handed down to us by the Jewish people for which we are indebted. Being supported by the root (Romans 11:18), we affirm our identity as found in our Jewish heritage.
We acknowledge Christian arrogance and antisemitism towards the Jewish people and Judaism and are determined to uproot this negative attitude from our sphere of influence and encourage other Christians to do the same.
We value the work of Jewish commentators and scholars throughout the ages who have enriched the Church and our understanding of the Bible. This does not mean that we agree with everything they propose, only that it is possible for Christians to learn much from Jewish people.
We support the right of the Jewish people to a homeland in Israel while always insisting that Israel act in a moral and ethical way towards the Palestinians and its neighbours, as we would any other country.
We categorically reject any form of deceit, manipulation or trickery in making known our particular understanding of Jesus among the Jewish people.

Church’s ministry among the jewish people.
Our History
Founded in London in 1809, the Church’s Ministry among Jewish People (CMJ) has been active in the Land of Israel since the 1820s. Moved by an awareness of God’s faithfulness to His covenant purposes, Christians recognized that God had promised to restore the people of Israel to their land, and to their Messiah.
Moved by compassion for the plight of the impoverished Jews in Palestine, CMJ established modern clinics, the first modern hospital in the Middle East, farms, workshops, vocational training, and schools for boys and for girls. CMJ also brought modern architecture, archeology, a library and more into the region. These efforts benefited all the people in the land – Arabs, Druze, Armenians and others. CMJ actively opposed antisemitism in the region and many of its supporters were key in promoting the establishment of a homeland for the Jewish people in the Holy Land.
In 1841, Michael Solomon Alexander was appointed as the Anglican bishop of Jerusalem (the first Jewish bishop in Jerusalem since 135 CE), and together with the Prussians, CMJ built Christ Church Jerusalem, the oldest Protestant Church in the Middle East. Although life in Israel is vastly different today, CMJ remains as committed, and its work as varied, as in the past.
CMJ South Africa is a relative newcomer to the global CMJ family. It was started in South Africa in 1978 and has developed a reputation for teachings that help churches from all denominations to reconnect the Bible to its Jewish context. CMJ SA is also at the forefront of advocacy against antisemitism both in the Church and in Society.
