Few artists captured the essence of American rock and roll like John Cougar Mellencamp.

concert tours 1993

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer performs live at DAR Constitution Hall in the nation’s capital this Thursday night, so WTOP spoke with longtime guitarist Mike Wanchic to reflect on a career of heartland rock.

“There are a lot of songs that people hold really dear to their hearts,” Wanchic told WTOP. “Music is a major trigger for memories and emotions, those are important things to people, so we can never disregard that. There are certain songs that you are obliged to play and we love to deliver those to our crowd, but conversely, we’re still making records — we’re 23 records into our career — and John’s the best songwriter that he’s ever been right now.”

Their collaboration dates back to 1976 when Wanchic was a college graduate interning at a recording studio in Bloomington, Indiana. There, he met a young guy recording demos at the time named Johnny Mellencamp, before adopting the animalistic stage name John Cougar for the debut album “Chestnut Street Incident” (1976).

Wanchic joined Mellencamp’s band full time in 1978, meaning he was there for the early albums “A Biography” (1978), “John Cougar” (1979) and “Nothin’ Matters and What if It Did” (1980), but it was their fifth album “American Fool” (1982) that blew up biggest with hits like “Hurts So Good” and “Jack & Diane.”

“We worked on ‘Jack & Diane’ for a long time … The Bee Gees were in the studio next to us and Maurice Gibb said, ‘I’ve got this new drum machine, would you like to try it?’ … it had that little backbeat that we used in ‘Jack & Diane,'” Wanchic said. “We played (the record president) ‘Hurts so Good,’ he didn’t get it, looked at John and said, ‘Maybe we should put horns on it.’ John blew his top, shoved him out the side door of the studio and closed it. He ejected the president of the record company! They reluctantly released the album and it had two No. 1 songs.”

After their sixth album “The Kid Inside” (1983), the band’s seventh album “Uh-Huh” (1983) delivered another round of hits with the catchy “Crumblin’ Down,” the defiant “Authority Song” and the social satire “Pink Houses” contemplating the American Dream with the most bittersweet lyrics: “They told me when I was younger, said, ‘Boy, you’re gonna be president,’ but just like everything else those old crazy dreams just kinda came and went.”

“It’s a lot of the great things about America, but it also points out a lot of the inequities that exist in America where a kid thinks he can do anything and maybe he can’t: ‘There’s a young man in a T-shirt listening to a rock ‘n roll station, he’s got greasy hair and greasy smile and says, ‘This must be my destination,'” Wanchic said. “There’s all kinds of innuendo woven into the lyric of that song that’s a little more satirical than a lot of people think it is.”

The eighth album “Scarecrow” (1985) delivered “Lonely Ol’ Night,” “R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.” and “Small Town.”

“(‘Small Town’) really does tell the tale of who and what we are,” Wanchic said. “I still live here in Bloomington, John still has a house here in Bloomington, we’re just small-town guys. … There’s like a moral fiber to the Midwest and small-town America that is undeniable and is part of the charm of America. If you lose that, you lose the identity of America, you become the corporate strip mall, and that’s what we don’t want to see happen.”

The ninth album “Lonesome Jubilee” (1987) ignited with “Paper in Fire,” “Cherry Bomb” and “Check It Out.”

“In my opinion, ‘Scarecrow’ and ‘Jubilee’ were the pinnacle of a lot of the writing when everything came together,” Wanchic said. “After ‘Scarecrow,’ which was still a guitar-based drums record, John says, ‘Hey, man, let’s all go out and learn another instrument,’ so I went away and worked on banjo, worked on Dobro, (while bandmates added steel, fiddle and accordion). That’s when we started doing instrument combinations to get different sounds.”

The band continued to land sporadic hits off the albums “Big Daddy” (1989), “Whenever We Wanted” (1991), “Human Wheels” (1993) and “Dance Naked” (1994), which featured a cool cover of Van Morrison’s “Wild Night.”

Dozens of albums have followed: “Mr. Happy Go Lucky” (1996), “John Mellencamp” (1998), “Rough Harvest” (1999), “Cuttin’ Heads” (2001), “Trouble No More” (2003), “Freedom’s Road” (2007), “Life, Death, Love and Freedom” (2008), “No Better Than This” (2010), “Plain Spoken” (2014), “Sad Clowns & Hillbillies” (2017), “Other People’s Stuff” (2018), “Strictly a One-Eyed Jack” (2022) and the newest record “Orpheus Descending” (2023).

“‘Hey, God’ is an absolutely amazing song, to me that’s the most amazing song on the (new) record,” Wanchic said. “It has relevance on all fronts: political, personal, familial, all of these different things are touched on in this song and it’s a bit of a slice of today’s political environment. It’s a remarkable record, John’s still writing beautifully, and we’ll probably be heading into another studio and making another record soon.”

Mellencamp was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2018, while Wanchic was inducted into the FarmAid Hall of Fame for his philanthropic work with FarmAid since 1985.

“I was one of the four original people that got it off the ground,” Wanchic said. “I’ve been the musical producer of the FarmAid records and a consultant from the very beginning. It’s something that’s held really dear to John’s heart, his sister and brother-in-law lost a farm during that ‘Scarecrow’ era, that was one of the things that pushed that song to get written. FarmAid is still vital, still happening and will be happening next September yet again.”

Entertainment | jennifer lopez ‘disappointed’ by ’embarrassing’ concert sales but vows to move on, the irrepressible mega-star is not letting the ‘bad press’ get to her head and is focused on her next project, a new adaptation of the ‘kiss of the spider woman’ story.

Jennifer Lopez wouldn’t be such a force in pop culture if she didn’t have the ability to pick herself up after a professional setback and move on to her next project.

And that’s what sources say she’s doing in the wake of the “embarrassing” reception to her much-promoted album — her first in 10 years — and her North American concert tour this summer.

Yes, the 54-year-old singer/actor/dancer/influencer/entrepreneur is “disappointed” by the “underwhelming” response to her album, “This Is Me … Now,” and the fact that the public hasn’t rushed out to grab up tickets to her “This is Me … Now” tour, one source told Us Weekly.

But she’s not letting the “bad press” get to her head, a second source also told the outlet. “Jennifer’s very focused on her next project.”

The second source told Us Weekly that Lopez has been through “plenty of problems like this before and has gotten over them,” adding, “She moves on when things like this happen.”

Lopez’s latest album peaked at No. 38 on the Billboard 200 albums chart in February, then disappeared, Forbes reported. Lopez faced more disappointment from “weak” ticket sales for her tour, according to Variety. Earlier this month, Lopez canceled seven concert dates in the Southern United States and rebranded the tour to apparently broaden its scope, changing it from “This Is Me… Now” to “This Is Me… Live/The Greatest Hits,” Variety reported.

Lopez and her team didn’t explain why they canceled the dates but industry analysts said that she must have realized that she’s no longer the kind of musical artist who can sell out arenas.

“This is super embarrassing,” Matthew Belloni said on his “The Town” podcast April 8. Belloni, co-founder of the Puck newsletter and The Hollywood Reporter’s former editor, talked about the big “roll-out” Lopez had undertaken to get the public excited about the album and the tour. In addition to a social media blitz, she also released two films, with Lopez sharing that she self-financed her three-part media extravaganza — the album and two movies — for $20 million.

But even with the big media roll-out, interest in her album and concert are definitely nowhere near Taylor Swift levels. Unfortunately, after rebranding her tour to make it appear to be more of a “greatest hits” event, “it’s still not selling,” Belloni said.

“I asked a big music industry person, like, what the hell is going on with J-Lo,” Belloni continued. “The response was she way overshot. Great person, great work ethic, nice team but they over-reached.”

It’s also debatable whether she has any hit songs, Belloni said, adding, “She was never as big as she was in her own mind. This is a sad situation.”

On “The Town,” regular guest Lucas Shaw, who covers the entertainment business news for Bloomberg News, asked, “When is the last time J-Lo had a song that anyone cared about?”

“From a music perspective, I feel like she peaked 20 years (ago),” Shaw continued. He said that the public is less interested in Lopez as a musical artist and more interested in her “as a persona.”

With regard to Lopez as “the persona,” one of her new documentaries indeed managed to generate buzz and some positive reviews. Though burdened with a self-important title, “The Greatest Love Story Never Told” tells the behind-the-scenes story about the creation of her album, with a focus on how Lopez rekindled her romance with Ben Affleck, 20 years after they dramatically called off their engagement.

In the documentary, Lopez is depicted as getting “candid” about her personal growth, her struggle to find a suitable romantic partner and her much publicized habit of cycling through relationships, engagements and marriages. At one point, she acknowledges that people are probably wondering, “What is this girl’s (expletive) problem?”

Affleck became Lopez’s fourth husband when they married in 2022. Another Us Weekly source said that Affleck has kept the mega-star “grounded” through her recent career challenges and insists, “She doesn’t really care what others think.”

As for Lopez’s next projects, both Belloni and Shaw said that she is back in demand for her acting, saying that her 2023 Netflix action thriller, “The Mother,” was a hit for the streaming service. To that end, Lopez is focused on her next movie, which she’s filming in New Jersey, according to Us Weekly.

The film is a feature adaptation of the 1993 Broadway musical “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” which is set in an Argentinian prison in 1981, Variety reported. Lopez would play the titular role, a fantasy woman named Aurora created by Luis Molina, a gay hairdresser serving an eight-year sentence for allegedly corrupting a minor.

The Broadway musical is, in turn, based on a novel by the late Argentine author Manuel Puig. The novel originally was adapted into an acclaimed 1985 film, co-starring William Hurt and Raul Julia. Hurt won the best actor Oscar for playing Molina.

Morrissey announces live album reissue and teases “two special event concerts”

The live set is captured from a 1993 performance in Paris

Morrissey has announced details of a new live album reissue, and teased that he plans to announce two “special event concerts”.

  • READ MORE: The Smiths: every song ranked in order of greatness

The announcement was shared by the solo icon and former Smiths frontman over the weekend (April 13), as he took to his Morrissey Central blog to tease a new release with fans.

“On Friday 26 July, Warner Records will re-issue Morrissey’s 1993 live in Paris album, ‘Beethoven Was Deaf’,” the brief post stated. “The release is global, and the album will be available on CD, black vinyl, and orange vinyl.”

“The album originally reached #13 in England, but was not released in the U.S. The venue is the Zenith in Paris,” it continued, also sharing an image of the album artwork which shows the singer mid-performance.

“Two special event concerts are planned to launch the July release,” it added at the end, encouraging fans to keep an eye on the site for further details, which are expected to be shared soon.

The news of the new live album comes following news at the start of the year that Morrissey was “receiving medical supervision for physical exhaustion” , after cancelling a string of shows in Los Angeles.

Initially, he was scheduled to perform two shows in California in celebration of the 20th anniversary of his classic 2004 album ‘You Are The Quarry’. However, it was later announced that the gigs would not be going ahead due to “unforeseen circumstances” . He also cancelled a number of South American shows, which were set to take place in February.

The ‘Beethoven Was Deaf’ live album has also been announced as the ‘80s icon continues to grapple with Capitol Records over the release of his long-mooted album, ‘Bonfire of Teenagers’.

The album was initially set for release in February last year, and reportedly featured guest spots from Miley Cyrus , Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith and Flea , and Iggy Pop . However, by the end of 2022, Morrissey said he had “voluntarily withdrawn from any association with Capitol Records (Los Angeles)” , and revealed that Cyrus requested for her feature to be removed from the album.

More recently, he shared an update on the album during an interview with Good Day New York last October, claiming that the label would return him the album “for a certain price” .

“It’s been quite traumatic and quite sad because when you record something, you want it to be available immediately and it was very much of the time,” he added. “For me, it was a very personal thing and the fact that it hasn’t been released has been torture.”

In other Morrissey news, in January – via a blog entitled ‘CANCEL CULTURE BEGINS AT HOME’ – the artist claimed that he was being deleted from being the “central essence” of The Smiths and hit out at former bandmates and associates. Quoting their debut single ‘Hand In Glove’, he concluded: “Hand in glove, I stake my claim! I’ll fight to the last breath!”

Sheryl Crow reveals her tour must-haves and essential albums, including this 'game changer'

Sheryl Crow is revealing how she writes her music, what she needs on tour and the albums she keeps going back to for USA TODAY's weekly series, The Essentials.

Sheryl Crow had no intention to write another album after 2019's "Threads."

But the combination of a mind overloaded with concern for the future and a series of songs that seemed to tumble out of her led to "Evolution," her 12 th studio album, released in March.

On it, the newly minted Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee tackles her fears about artificial intelligence on the title track, blends expert snark with humor ("Anger sucks, but at least your brand's trending," she sings on "Broken Record") and covers Peter Gabriel's 1992 classic "Digging in the Dirt."

It's an organic progression for the woman who has sold more than 50 million albums since 1993's debut, "Tuesday Night Music Club," earned nine Grammy Awards and climbed the Billboard Hot 100 19 times with hits including "If It Makes You Happy," "All I Wanna Do" and "My Favorite Mistake."

In a conversation from her home studio in Nashville, Crow, 62, shares her essential albums and tells us why her upcoming tour dates will be more of a family affair than a boisterous party scene.

Why Sheryl Crow prefers to write in a quiet space

In announcing her new album, Crow said the songs came from "sitting in the quiet and writing from a deep soul place."

As mother to sons Levi, 13, and Wyatt, 16, Crow says she often finds herself engaged in their active lives, so her writing sessions primarily take place when the boys are in school.

"I sit on the screened-in porch, and if it's cold I'll light a fire, and if not, I sit out with the sounds of birds and my guitar and a cup of tea. That's where I worked out most of what is on this record," she says. "It's sort of like downloading (your mind) now, and it's liberating. I hate being on the other side of when you age out of being popular, but it's liberating to sit down and write what is on your mind, and know there is probably a huge population of people who understand that."

Sheryl Crow is done partying on tour but anticipates 'adventure'

Crow will head to Europe this summer for a couple of weeks of shows before meeting up with Pink in August to open a slate of concerts on her Summer Carnival stadium tour.

Crow's sons will join her in Europe, even though "they're of the age where maybe going on tour bus isn't where they want to spend their summer," she says with a laugh. But she's hoping for an "adventure" with her family while keeping things low-key backstage and on the bus.

"I'm really easy. We have our general snacks and I like to drink a beer, maybe two if I'm feeling, 'Hey, let's get loose.' But that's the extent of that. If my kids are there, I'm happy."

Sheryl Crow names her 'game changer' album

Crow enjoyed an almost surreal experience at her Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in November when she performed with upstarts ( Olivia Rodrigo ), legends (Willie Nelson, Elton John ) and friends ( Stevie Nicks , Peter Frampton) on the same night.

Music is a necessity in her life, and she taps George Harrison's triple album from 1970, the lauded "All Things Must Pass," as her "game changer."

"I just remember as a kid reading album notes, and for him to step out (from the band) … we Beatles fans didn't know what he was fully capable of, and that album blew my mind," Crow says. "I think it planted some seeds to seeking some higher vibration. I've come back to it through the years and picked up things like, 'Oh yeah, that's what he meant.'"

As a lifelong Beatles disciple, Crow also still gravitates toward "Let It Be," the band's final studio album, released in 1970.

"I was brought into the world with a certain amount of melancholy, and there is a lot of that in that record, the essence that it was all coming apart even though you didn’t know it," she says. "But you felt different personalities on the record and the songwriting was so beautiful."

Sheryl Crow explains the 'divinity' of Stevie Wonder

Crow still drifts toward Stevie Wonder, musically and personally, and admires his aura as well as his landmark 1972 album, "Talking Book."

"He was such an amazing writer when it came to documenting what was happening in the times and he made it hooky. We all sang every word," she says. "I'll look at him and think, 'There is so much divinity there.' All of the rest of us are trying to learn, and he just came in with it. In the history of musicians, there are a handful of people like that. It was part of the essential DNA."

Crow also maintains a soft spot for "Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon," the 1971 James Taylor record that includes his only No. 1 hit, the Carole King-written "You've Got a Friend."

Crow recalls lying on the floor of her childhood home in front of the record player and absorbing Taylor's understated storytelling.

"It lifts me, it opens me. It's beautiful songwriting and singing," she says. "Music is a salve. I remember meeting Carlos Santana and him saying, 'You really change the molecules.' And that statement is the summation of what I think music is."
