Anyone knows what happened to the Char Kuey Teow stall which was located beside the Hindu temple in JB town in the 90s? His Kuey Teow was simple but delicious.

Tq very much for your list. My family has been complaining about the lack of food option in Jb. The list is a life saver. We have tried about 55 of them. Some are our usual favorite stalls while others are new. The food occasionally are not consistent as it taste different on different occasion. One of the restaurant has shifted.

Thank you for your support. May I know which restaurant has shifted so that I can update the list. Appreciate much.

There's a new fish noodle soup place in Tmn Sri Tebrau. Wiekii noodles. Worth checking it out.

Wiekii ?? Unable search

FYI, Bong Family have opened their own restaurant at Johor Jaya. Same block as Nasi Padang JJ. Their FB page is "Bong Taste Penang Asam Laksa". They do a fantastic combo which comprises of assam laksa, nasi kunyit with chicken curry, belachan chicken wing and bubur cha cha. We ate there after a recent fishing trip to Kuala Rompin and the taste is still fantastic.

Thank you very much for the update! Appreciate! (from Tony)

What’s the name of the huge hawker centre that had huge grouping of bbq stingrays and seafood, and other delicious Chinese, Malaysian and Indian food? Opposite were many pharmacies too!!! Used to visit in 1870-2000!!!

din kee beef noodles - flatlay

Din Kee Beef Noodle has been around since 2007, and they do beef noodles oh so well. Your choices are simple: pick a noodle, the beef bits you want, and then decide if you prefer it in soup, or dry. Prices here start from RM10/~S$2.90 for the simplest bowls of Braised Meat , or Braised Meat + Tripe . If you want it all, that’s Braised Meat + Tripe + Tendon + Fresh Meat , priced at RM16/~S$4.60 —we were told that price revisions are due, so be prepared to fork out a little bit more.

The beef broth is prepared fresh daily, and is minimally boiled for five hours, resulting in a bodied, meaty stock, accented with Sour Pickled Mustard (RM1/~S$0.30) to serve. If you can’t decide, we recommend getting the dry with thick bee hoon, plus crunchy roasted Peanut (RM1/~S$0.30) , tossed in an addictive blend of shallot oil, dark soya sauce, and a thick beef gravy.

Address: 56, Jalan Indah 1, Taman Bukit Indah, 81200 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia Opening hours: Fri-Wed 8am to 3pm Tel: +60 16-736 1522 Website Din Kee Beef Noodle is not a halal-certified eatery

wah cai 3 in 1 chinese cake - cross section

Sandwiched between Restoran Lai Kee and Kedai Roti Dan Kek Kedai Kek Siang Yong is Wah Cai 3-in-1 Chinese Cake , a takeaway-only stand that sees long queues throughout the day. Even if you get in the queue, there’s a chance that you might have to return later to pick up your order: consider yourself warned.

They’re named for their star product: a Fried Chinese New Year Cake with Sweet Potato & Yam (RM2.50/~S$0.80) that sees nian gao stuck between a slice each of sweet potato and yam, battered, and fried a la goreng pisang—which Malaysians will tell you is meant to be pisang goreng. You can get Fried Banana (RM1.50/~S$0.50) here too, alongside Fried Cempedak (RM4/~S$1.30) and Fried Durian (RM4.50/~S$1.50) .

Address: 86, Jalan Pahlawan 2, Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, 81300 Skudai, Johor, Malaysia Opening hours: Thurs-Tue 9:30am to 4:30pm Tel: +60 19-750 5616 Website Wah Cai 3-in-1 Chinese Cake is not a halal-certified eatery

woon kiang - flatlay

If you like kway chap, chances are, you’ll find Restoran Woon Kiang to be right up your alley. This popular street-side eatery is loved for its kway teow kia , AKA skinny, long kway teow, and also for the fact that they’re open till the wee hours of the morning.

Simply walk up to the counter and pick your ingredients, which include the usual suspects of braised duck, offal , braised pork belly , and so on; they’ll get chopped up and sent over to your table. Even if you aren’t a fan of the innards, give the kway teow kia a try—it’s ultra-thin, silky, and smooth, and goes super well with the broth.

Address: Jalan Pandan 2, Taman Stulang, 80300 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia Opening hours: Daily 5pm to 2:30am Tel: +60 7-220 0310 Website Restoran Woon Kiang is not a halal-certified eatery

taika huat - flatlay

Taika Huat has come a long way since its beginnings in 1973 as a braised duck stall. Today, the eatery is still in the hands of their family, in an open shop space under a zinc roof that’s built around a number of huge trees. These towering green giants are said to have been planted back when the stall was first founded.

Besides the Teochew-style braised Duck Meat (from RM11/~S$3.60) and Duck Wings (RM3.50/~S$1.20 for four) , you can get Duck Web , Duck Tongue (RM10/~S$3.20) , and a surprisingly delectable braised Pig Trotter (RM40/~S$12.90 for half) , which is wobbly in all the right places, and meltingly tender. You can have this all with rice, of course, but the dry Kuehteow (RM2/~S$0.70) is not one to skip.

Address: MY Johor Skudai Jalan Batu 8½ near Lee Pineapple Factory and SJK Kuo Kuang school Jalan Kilang Nenas, 81300, Malaysia Opening hours: Wed-Mon 8:30am to 4pm Tel: +60 17-763 2188 Kedai Masakan Itik Taika Huat is not a halal-certified eatery

lai kee - flatlay

Another long-time institution that the locals flock to is Restoran Lai Kee , where the fishballs are still made fresh by hand daily. Unlike the store-bought variety that’s full of flour, flavourings, and other additives, the ones here are 100% ikan parang with a dash of salt for taste.

A bowl of Fishball Noodles , at RM8/~S$2.30 , comes with fish cake, sliced pork, fishballs, and a fried version of the same fishball, that has a more intense flavour. Have it in soup, or dry, tossed with dark soya sauce and chilli. You’ll see that every table has a portion of Fried Beancurd Skin (RM6/~S$1.60) , which you can snack on while waiting for your noodles.

Address: Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Jalan Pahlawan 2, 81300 Skudai, Johor, Malaysia Opening hours: Thurs-Tue 7am to 2:30pm Tel: +60 19-715 9866 Restoran Lai Kee is not a halal-certified eatery

kedai bkt hin hock - flatlay

Located in Tampoi, Kedai Bak Kut Teh Hin Hock is more well-known for its Poached Fish (market price) rather than the Claypot Bak Kut Teh (from RM15/~S$4.30) . Unlike the peppery bak kut teh we’re more familiar with, this is strongly perfumed with the taste of Chinese liquorice—an orange peel-like flavour that’s a rather acquired taste.

Apart from the Poached Fish, liberally drenched in their blend of soya sauce and loads of fried garlic, there’s Minced Meat Tofu (RM8/~S$2.30) , another simple yet tasty dish of tofu topped with a flavourful meat sauce.

Address: 72, Jalan Dato Mohammed Seth, Taman Tampoi Indah 2, 81200 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia Opening hours: Tue-Sun 8:30am to 3:30pm Tel: +60 19-779 3434 Website Kedai Bak Kut Teh Hin Hock is not a halal-certified eatery

siang yong bakery - cross section

For traditional Chinese pastries, look no further than Kedai Roti Dan Kek Kedai Kek Siang Yong , an institution that’s been churning out tau sa piah, or Green Bean Paste Pastry (RM1.20/~S$0.40) , Heong Peah Pastry (RM1.90/~S$0.60) and more for more than 30 years.

That’s not to say that they haven’t got more novel creations too: the Dried Shrimp Coconut Pastry (RM1.40/~S$0.50) and Pandan Kaya Puff (RM1.40/~S$0.50) , as well as Mini Chicken Floss with Green Bean Paste Pastry (RM0.70/~S$0.30) have turned out to be bestselling items too.

Address: No. 78, A, Jalan Pahlawan 2, Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, 81300 Skudai, Johor, Malaysia Opening hours: Thurs-Tue 8am to 5:30pm Tel: +60 12-972 0915 Website Kedai Roti Dan Kek Kedai Kek Siang Yong is not a halal-certified eatery

tai chiang - flatlay

If you’re being pedantic about it, Restoran Tai Chiang is not located in JB—but it’s close enough to the Johor Premium Outlets to warrant a pitstop here before you head to your shopping frenzy. They’ve been serving kaya toast and kopi since 1970, and to date still make their own kaya, roast their own beans, and toast their bread over charcoal.

Order yourself a Kopi (from RM2.80/~S$0.90) for a perk-me-up, though you might want to ask for it less sweet. On the Roti front, you can get Keping , or sliced bread, at RM1.80/~S$0.60 , or a Bun for RM2.50/~S$0.80 . Then, opt for it to be bakar, AKA toasted, or steamed. Complete the meal with Telur (RM1.20/~S$0.40) , for kampong chicken eggs.

Address: 7, Jalan Jelawat, Taman Sri Saleng, 81400 Kulai, Johor, Malaysia Opening hours: Wed-Mon 7am to 2pm Tel: +60 12-789 9787 Website Restoran Tai Chiang is not a halal-certified eatery

g cheong fun - flatlay

Making up your mind at G. Cheong Fun Restaurant  might prove to be a tough one, because not only are there six cheong fun to choose from, you can even zhng-up your CCF with house-made yong tau foo.

All the cheong fun here is made in-house with freshly-milled rice flour, and is served slightly cool to preserve the integrity of the noodles. The most unique is Anson (RM7/~S$2) , where preserved turnip, hei bee, and shallots are steamed into the cheong fun itself. There’s also Kampar Curry (RM3.30/~S$1) , Red Sweet Sauce (RM3.30/~S$1) , Black Sweet Sauce (RM3.30/~S$1) , or Scallion Oil (RM3.30/~S$1) , a savoury, fragrant dish.

Address: 176, Jalan Pahlawan 2, Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, 81300 Skudai, Johor, Malaysia Opening hours: Tue-Sun 6:30am to 4pm Tel: +60 18-473 4118 G. Cheong Fun Restaurant is not a halal-certified eatery

wantan mee ds - flatlay

Cheap and good wonton mee is the name of the game at Restoran Wantan Mee DS , where they even make their egg noodles—available in mee pok or mee kia—on the premises. Prices here start at RM5.80/~S$1.70  for a bowl of BBQ Pork Noodles , where you’ll get a massive serving of noodles with fatty char siew, fried, and boiled wonton. Alternatively, it’s RM4.80/~S$1.60 for Minced Pork noodles, which replaces the char siew with minced pork.

The default is KL-style, black sauce wonton mee, but you can also request for the Traditional white style. Help yourself to hei bee sambal—it’s real good—and house-fried pork lard to make the noodles even better. On the side, you can add on Fried Wantan (RM4.50/~S$1.50 for 10 pieces) , Dumpling Soup (RM1.50/~S$0.20 for one piece) , or Fish-flavoured Toufu (RM2/~S$0.70 for one piece) .

Address: 3, Jalan Seri Impian 1, Taman Impian Emas, 81300 Skudai, Johor, Malaysia Opening hours: Fri-Wed 7:30am to 8pm Tel: +60 16-660 5498 Website Restoran wantan Mee DS is not a halal-certified eatery

hua mui - flatlay

If you’ve already been to the other famous chicken chop place in JB, consider Restoran Hua Mui JB next. They were founded in 1946, which means they’ve been making their Hainanese-style dishes for more than 70 years!

With a dizzying number of dishes on the menu spanning nasi lemak, mee rebus and more, we recommend you focus on the Hainanese Chicken Chop (RM20.90/~S$6) . You must dip it in the accompanying brown sauce for maximum enjoyment, and finish the meal with Kopi Cincau (RM4.50/~S$1.50) —it’s just the right amount of sweet and rich, with fine shreds of grass jelly for texture.

Address: 131, Jalan Trus, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia Opening hours: Daily 8:30am to 5:30pm (last order at 5pm) Tel: +60 7-224 7364 Website Restoran Hua Mui JB is not a halal-certified eatery

Johor Bahru Hawker Food - Bukit Changar Roti Canai Ambience

Bukit Changar Warung Roti Canai can be the first pitstop of your JB trip as it is just an eight-minute stroll from the customs. Keep your sharp elbows up! Just like the situation at the customs, some jostling is needed at this perpetually crowded prata joint.

Johor Bahru Hawker Food - Roti Canai

You will get to see the “open-concept” kitchen hum with activity like a well-oiled machine. Watch in anticipation as the soft white dough transforms into a beautiful golden brown as it hits the heated pan. Each prata kosong—or better known in Malaysia as roti canai —is only RM1 /~S$0.40 ! For a more hearty breakfast, order their egg roti canai (RM2 /~S$0.70 ) instead.

Address: 394 Jalan Tengku Azizah, Bukit Chagar, 80300 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia Opening hours: Daily 6:45am to 11am Bukit Changar Roti Canai is a halal-certified eatery

Johor Bahru Hawker Food - Fa Ge Lok Lok Food Truck

Lok lok is synonymous with late-night supper haunts in JB. Open daily from 7pm to the wee hours of 4am, Fa Ge Lok Lok is the place to go for these tasty skewers. Other than its humourous name, what we love about this food truck is its extensive array of skewers priced from RM1.50 /~S$0.50 .

Johor Bahru Hawker Food - Fa Ge Lok Lok Skewers

Follow these steps if you haven’t had lok lok before:

  • Pick from over 50 kinds of skewers including bacon rolls, wontons, and mantou.
  • Separate the skewers according to how you want it—deep-fried, grilled, or boiled.
  • Take a styrofoam box and fill it up with your choice of peanut sauce, Thai chilli sauce, sweet sauce, or garlic ginger chilli sauce.

Address: 74 Jalan Abiad, Taman Pelangi, 80400 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia Opening hours: Daily 6:30pm to 4am Tel: +60 7-335 2020 Website Fa Ge Lok Lok is not a halal-certified eatery

Johor Bahru Hawker Food - Restoran Ya Wang

Restoran Ya Wang is so well-known amongst JB troopers that there almost wasn’t a need for me to include it in this list. The restaurant is known as the official consultant behind Dian Xiao Er’s Ten Wonder Herbs Roast Duck, so ordering their Ten Herbal Roast Duck (RM44 /~S$12.60 for half) should already be a no-brainer.

Johor Bahru Hawker Food - Herbal Roast Duck

The robustly flavoured herbal sauce was so rich that I felt I could be nursed back to health with a single sip. Every bite is a delicious sequence of crisp fat-lined skin, followed by a burst of duck juices from the tender meat.

Address: 28 Jalan Segget, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia Opening hours: Thurs-Tue 8am to 6pm Tel:+60 7-224 8624 Website Restoran Ya Wang is not a halal-certified eatery

Johor Bahru Hawker Food - Warung Saga Ambience

If you’re looking for a hearty meal, Warung Saga is one eatery you must visit. Operating since 1986, the eatery might be hidden in plain sight, but its food and ambience make it stand out from its neighbours.

Johor Bahru Hawker Food - Lontong Kering

Besides classic Malay dishes such as Nasi Lemak (RM3 /~S$1 ) , Warung Saga also serves an interesting version of dry lontong that is unique to JB. Known as Lontong Kering (RM6 /~S$2 ) , the dish features ketupat rice dunked in a fragrant peanut sambal sauce, topped with stir-fried vegetables, tempeh, and a huge chunk of chicken. According to hearsay, this breakfast staple sells out by 11am, so make sure to head down first thing in the morning.

Address: 5 Jalan Mahamoodiah, 80100 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia Opening hours: Sat 7am to 12pm, 5:30pm to 11pm, Sun-Thurs 7am to 2:30pm, 5:30pm to 11pm Tel: +60 12-782 9427 Website Warung Saga is a halal-certified eatery

Johor Bahru Hawker Food - Salahuddin Bakery Ambience

Salahuddin Bakery remains one of the few places persevering to make their food the traditional way. Opened since 1937, they still use a wood-fired baking oven to bake everything from bread to even cakes. Just an eight-minute walk from Johor Bahru City Square , the bakery makes for a great pitstop to buy some goodies back home.

Johor Bahru Hawker Food - Karipap

This old gem offers over 25 kinds of pastry or bread. You won’t go wrong with their Karipap Potato (RM2.20 /~S$0.65 ) or Karipap Chicken (RM2.50 /~S$0.70 ) , which are filled with mashed potato peppered with spices between smokey layers of puff pastry. Kids will also love nibbling on some Sugar Puffs (RM2 /~S$0.70 ) which hit the sweet spot just fine.

Address: 26, Jalan Dhoby, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia Opening hours: Sat-Thurs 9am to 6pm Tel: +60 12-766 8380 Website Salahuddin Bakery is a halal-certified eatery

nasi ayam kee chup

Although not a heritage stall like many of the others on this list, Nasi Ayam Kee Chup has gained traction for its crisp fried chicken leg, served with chicken rice. A Nasi Ayam Satu Set is priced at RM12/~S$3.45 , or you can get just the house-marinated leg, Ayam Kee Chup (Tambah) for RM8.90/~S$2.45 . Plain chicken rice, or Nasi Tambah , is chargeable at RM3.20/~S$0.90 .

Address: 24A, Jalan Dato Dalam, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia Opening hours: Wed-Mon 11am to 4pm Tel: +60 19-669 2133 Website Nasi Ayam Kee Chup is a halal-certified eatery

zainal's place

The history behind each plate of Mee Rebus (RM8/~S$2.30) at Zainal’s Place dates all the way back to 1918, although Zainal’s Place as we know it was founded in 1977. They’re also super popular with the local crowd, many of whom say they serve the best mee rebus around.

The version here is said to be less starchy, yet it retains that gooey finish we associate with the Javanese noodle dish. It’s also got hints of peanut, without being too spicy, sweet, or tangy—the signature finishing touch is a splash of vinegar and a smattering of crunchy, savoury bits. If you’re up for a treat, go for the Mee Rebus Tulang Gearbox (RM20/~S$5.70) , which comes with a whole mutton bone stuck with a straw for your convenience!

Address: 89, Jalan Keris, Taman Sri Tebrau, 80050 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia Opening hours: Sat-Thurs 7:30am to 5pm Tel: +60 7-334 1325 Website Zainal’s Place is a halal-certified eatery

In line with its cool interior, the cocktails are just as neat, and incorporate Asian ingredients such as osmanthus and ylang ylang. While you might think that a bar with such an aesthetic might churn out cold and stoic bartenders, Shui’s service crew are anything but — its bartenders are engaging, friendly and extremely accommodating of your cocktail preferences.

Crowd favourites: Though its menu rotates every few weeks, we loved the grilled pandan (RM50) which featured a barley-infused gin, coffee, brown sugar, hojicha and a mix of aromatic bitters. Another hot favourite is its Old Fashioned with biscoff and hazelnut (RM55), a bourbon drink with rich and nutty flavours.

13 Cheap & Good Food Near Johor Bahru Checkpoint

Maureen

Text & Photo by Hazel & Maureen

Johor Bahru, Malaysia – Thinking of making a quick trip to Johor Bahru for some cheap and delicious food? Read this post to find out where you can find cheap and good food near Johor Bahru Checkpoint (or Johor Bahru City Square). There is no need for bus nor taxi, you can get to these places on foot!

Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory 协裕面包西果厂 (Halal) Address: 13 Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000 Johor Bahru Operating Hours: 8:00AM – 6:00PM (Closed on Sundays)

Johor Bahru Checkpoint Food:Hiap Joo Bakery

Hiap Joo Bakery is one of Johor’s oldest and best known traditional bakeries. It offers good fresh malt-flavoured breads and aromatic banana cakes. If you are here for their banana cake, like us, go earlier to queue even though the banana cakes will only be ready at noon. Hiap Joo is established in 1919 and still uses a hole-in-the-wall wood fired oven to make fresh cakes and breads. This is the best banana cake I have ever tasted. It’s moist, fragrant, and very reasonably priced. As there is limited space in the shop, customers have to queue in a row to get into the shop.

Restoran Kin Wah (锦华餐室) Address: 8 Jalan Trus, 80000 Johor Bahru Hours: 7am to 12pm

Johor Bahru Checkpoint Food: Restoran Kin Wah

If you want a traditional breakfast, head to Restoran Kin Wah (锦华餐室) near Jalan Tan Hiok Nee “Culture Street” (文化街). This is a simple, no-frills kopitiam selling old school breakfast. This place serves one of the best coffee and half-boiled eggs in my opinion. The coffee is thick, with the right balance of sugar and milk. Bring it close to your nose and take in the distinct aroma of the coffee. Restoran Kin Hua uses kampung chicken eggs for it’s half boiled eggs. The eggs are firmer in texture, but still done perfectly!

Roti Canai Bukit Chagar (Halal) Address: Junction of Jalan Bukit Chagar and Jalan Ungku Aziz (next to Pine View Apartments and PDRM Apartments) Opening Hours: 6am to 11am (breakfast only, roti canai often sold out by 10am)

Johor Bahru Checkpoint Food: Roti Canai Bukit Chagar

One of the most memorable breakfasts I had in Johor was at Bukit Chagar, where we dug into freshly made Roti Canai. I like their prata because it is thick, crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. It isn’t too greasy, as well. The prata goes very well with their dhal. For those who like it slightly more spicy, you can add a dab of curry for that extra oomph. We had 5 pratas and the bill came up to less than RM8.00!

Kok Yow Yong 霍有用 Address: Junction of Jalan Trus and Jalan Pasar , Old Downtown Johor Bahru Opening Hours: 6:00AM – 1:00PM (Closed on Sunday)

Johor Bahru Checkpoint Food: Kow Yow Yong (Herbal Tea)

Located at Jalan Dhoby, Kok Yow Yong is a herbal tea shop which is more than 100 years old. Run by two sisters, it serves up freshly brewed herbal tea at RM1.00 per glass. You can have the bitter version or have it sweetened. If you cannot take bitterness, try their chrysanthemum tea instead. They separate the chrysanthemum flowers manually and use other herbal powder to brew the drink. Other than these two drinks, the lady boss also makes an energy booster drink or what we call “special tea”. Do give it a try if you are nearby.

Ah Hua 亚华 kway teow soup (Restoran Sekee 司機) Address: No. 30 Jalan Segget, 80000 Johor Bahru Opening Hours: 7:30AM – 2:30PM (Closed on Saturday)

Johor Bahru Checkpoint Food: Ah Hua 亚华 Kway Teow Soup

Ah Hua Teochew Kway Teow is one of the oldest kway teow soup shops in town. There are many branches around, but the one nearest to Singapore is just a few minutes walk from the Johor Bahru checkpoint. The most striking feature of this stall is that they still use charcoal to boil the broth. Their recipe has been passed down from generations to generations. However, be prepared to pay as a bowl of kway teow soup here costs RM16.00. You will get a bowl filled with ingredients such as liver, kidney, abalone slices and more. Although the price is a bit steep, they have a pool of regular customers. And, that says a lot about them.

Salahuddin Bakery (HALAL) Address: 26, Jalan Dhoby, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000 Johor Bahru Opening Hours: 8:00AM-2:00PM

Johor Bahru Checkpoint Food: Salahuddin Bakery

Another bakery in Jalan Dhoby is Salahuddin Bakery, which has been in business since 1937. This is a family business that’s withstood the test of time. They use a traditional coal-fired oven to bake fresh breads as well. If you look around, there are black and white photographs of the owners and numerous articles hanging on the walls. Try the triangular curry puff; it is loaded with a generous filling.

Tody’s Wine Shop, Kedai Tuak Awam Address: Along Jalan Sulaiman, Downtown Johor Bahru Opening Hours: 10:00AM – 4:00PM

Johor Bahru Checkpoint Food: Tody Wine Shop

Fancy some coconut wine? Located just behind the Shell Petrol Station (across Jalan Wong Ah Fook) is Tody’s Wine Shop. Toddy is an alcoholic beverage that is created from the sap of the coconut palm. The alcoholic content ranges from 2 to 10%. Toddy is said to help relieve cold symptoms, much like our Chinese herbal tea. I ordered a mug(RM3.00) to try. It tastes and looks similar to barley water. The kick will come in after awhile.

Sang Heng Coffee Shop Address: 7 Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, Bandar Johor Bahru (Next to OCBC JB Branch) Opening Hours: 7:00AM – 1:00PM (Closed on Saturday)

Johor Bahru Checkpoint Food: Sang Heng Coffee Shop

Located near OCBC Bank is another traditional Teochew Kway Teow shop that is run by an elderly uncle. The uncle always wears a formal short-sleeved shirt at the stall. If you are there on weekdays, be prepared to queue as most of the office people will be patronizing the shop during breakfast hours and lunchtime.

Sang Heng-6

We tried a bowl of Teowchew Kway Teow soup (RM6.00) and dry fishball noodles (RM6.00). The Teochew Kway Teow Soup comes with pork balls, fish balls, beansprouts, tiny prawns and minced pork. The soup broth is light and comforting. The dry fishball noodles features springy mee kia tossed in a fiery and tangy chilli.

IT Roo Cafe Address: 17 Jalan Dhoby, Johor Bahru Business Hour: 10am – 9.30pm

Johor Bahru Checkpoint Food: IT Roo Cafe

Awarded the “Best Chicken Chop in Malaysia” title by The Star newspaper in 2003, IT Roo operates in a pre-war building which attracts many locals and tourists. There are two types of halal-certified chicken chop at IT Roo – grilled or deep fried. The Grilled Chicken Chop (RM14.00) is my favourite. Using thick and juicy chicken thigh, the chicken chop is grilled till perfection and generously drizzled with either black pepper sauce or mushroom sauce. Some of us preferred the Fried Chicken Chop (RM14.00), with a thick beautiful sauce (but not too much). When you slice the chicken open, what you get is tender meat which goes very well with the chilli sauce.

Restoran Ya Wang 鸭皇药材烧腊大王 Address: No.28 Jalan Segget, 80000 Johor Bahru Opening Hours: 8:00AM – 6:00PM (Daily) Tel: +60 7224 8624

Johor Bahru Checkpoint Food: Restoran Ya Wang

Ya Wang is one of the pioneers that sells herbal roast ducks in Johor Bahru. They are also the advisor for Dian Xiao Er in Singapore. As you step into the restaurant, the friendly servers will greet you with a smile and take your order. The restaurant is air-conditioned, which is perfect for the humid weather.

YA WANG-6

Try their signature herbal roasted duck with char siew and roasted pork. The duck meat and skin are lean and soft. The herbal gravy is subtle and comforting. If roasted duck is not enough to fill your stomachs, you can go for Zi Char and double-boiled soups too. There are set meals catered to different group sizes as well. All prices and dishes are stated on the white board attached to the wall. The dining experience would be more pleasant if there were lesser houseflies around.

Kam Long Curry Fish Head (金龙咖喱鱼头) Address: 74, Jalan Wong Ah Fook, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000 Johor Bahru Tel: +6 016-752-8382 / +6 016-796-2228 / +6 016-205-1610 Opening hours: 8:00AM – 4:30PM (Monday to Sunday)

Johor Bahru Checkpoint Food: Kam Long Curry Fish Head

Curry fish head for breakfast? It may seem too heavy for many of us, but Kam Long Curry Fish Head is a must-visit. Just a 5 minutes walk from City Square Mall, and you will see Kam Long Curry Fish Head. Having been in business for over 30 years, Kam Long only sells curry fish head and is well known by the locals and Singaporeans.

The tender flesh of the ang ko li (red snapper) absorbs the curry flavours really well. The spices from the curry enhance the natural flavour of the fish head, without overpowering it. It comes with tofu skin, ladyfingers, long beans and cabbage. What I really enjoy is the tau pok (deep-fried beancurd) which soaks up the delicious gravy thoroughly. If you want to visit Kam Long, I suggest that you come before 11.30am as the queue is shorter. The curry is pretty much sold out by 2:30 pm.

Restoran Hua Mui 华美茶餐室 Address: 131 Jalan Trus, 80000 Johor Bahru Opening Hours: 8:00AM – 6:00PM (Daily) Tel: +607 – 224 7364

Johor Bahru Checkpoint Food: Restoran Hua Mui

Hua Mui Kopitiam started in 1948 and has expanded to a few outlets in Johor Bahru. The 2-storey coffee shop has super retro furniture and sells traditional Hainanese-style breakfast and signature hainanese chicken chop. Due to its long history and certified halal status, many Muslims/ Malays also dine here. Having freshly made kaya butter bread toasted over a charcoal fire and soft-boiled eggs sounds like the perfect start to any day. The coffee here is excellent – thick and fragrant.

Restoran Reaz Corner Address: No.24A , Jalan Dhoby, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000 Johor Bahru Opening Hours: 24 HOURS Tel: +60 13-744 0089

Johor Bahru Checkpoint Food: Restoran Reaz Corner

Mamak are Malaysians with Tamil Muslim roots. A Mamak stall offers a variety of roti canai, nasi lemak, maggi goreng (Fried Maggi Noodles), masala and more. In 30-year-old Reaz Corner (just a few steps away from Salahuddin Bakery), great Mamak dishes can be expected.

Azmi Corner-3

Although their signature dish is nasi briyani Bombay, many come here for their roti canai and masala. They have many regular patrons dropping by for breakfast before going to work. With RM1.00, you can get a plain roti canai (roti kosong); and with RM3.00, their Tosai Masala. Customers will order and enjoy the food first, and pay when they are ready to leave. This is how most of the mamak stalls work in Malaysia.

JB Day Trip Itinerary — Where to Eat, Play and Shop Under S$70

    johor food trip

Go beyond your typical JB day trip to KSL and City Square while sticking to a friendly budget!

    First published: 5 July 2022

Many of us head to Johor Bahru (JB) for one of two reasons: to shop or to cafe-hop. After all, cheap shopping steals are all there is to JB right? — Not exactly.

Pasar Karat JB Bazaar Outside KSL - Johor Day Trip

It’s true that prices are cheaper across the Causeway, but there’s so much more to eat, play and shop in JB than just shopping malls or aesthetic cafes.

Apart from your familiar hot spots, this adventurous itinerary will show you how to zhng your JB day trip with panoramic skyline views, a bustling night market, and an exciting pop-up theme park.

Plus, you don’t have to spend much to enjoy these cool experiences at all!

    JB Day Pre-trip Essentials

Friends together at Skyscape - Johor Day Trip

Before anything, you might want to secure some things for a hassle-free experience.

Connectivity: We booked a 4G eSIM Card, just enough for one day ( ~S$9 for 2.5GB/5 days via Klook)

Activities: Pre-purchase your tickets online for cheaper prices. For instance, we bought our tickets to Skyscape (also via Klook ) and saved ~S$4/adult.

*Pro-tip: Use the code <THETRAVELINTERN> on Klook to get 5% off all activities with a min. spend of S$50 (discount cap at S$15). Apply the promo code when you checkout. One-time use only!

Cash: Cards are accepted in malls and cafes, but not at traditional stalls like Salahuddin or the night market. Hence, we recommend changing cash for the trip. When paying for bigger ticket items in shopping malls, use multi-currency cards like YouTrip or Revolut to avoid lousy exchange rates.

Transportation: We have a dedicated section for getting around JB later on, but you might want to download Grab as it may be the cheaper option for groups. For instance, the bus to KSL from Customs costs RM2/pax but a Grab that can take four people costs RM5.

If you’re exploring regions beyond JB, then you might want to take a look at Klook’s All-in-One Value Pack for Malaysia . It’ll give you discount vouchers for activities, SIM cards, airport transfers, etc. You can save up to ~S$95 when you use all the vouchers included in the pack!

Budget Breakdown for JB Day Trip

Johor Train - Johor Day Trip

There are three options to get to Johor Bahru via public transport: 1) Train from Woodlands Train Checkpoint (S$5 to JB and RM5 to SG) 2) Bus 160/170 from Opposite Kranji MRT Station , or Bus 170X from Kranji Station (S$1.25/ one-way journey) 3) Grab Bus from various locations like Changi Airport, Expo MRT, Marsiling MRT and more (from S$3 to S$11 per person)

The train ride is a more comfortable option at only S$5/one-way trip (S$5 to JB and RM5 to SG), without having to squeeze compared to the bus.

*Pro-tip: Pre-book your train tickets as seats get sold out quickly.

Meanwhile, public buses offer the flexibility of time without having to rush for your ride. At Kranji Station , all three buses to JB arrive every 15-20 mins (depending on road conditions). Or book a bus on the Grab app to secure a seat and ride in comfort!

You’ll have to alight at the Woodlands Checkpoint for immigration, before continuing your journey across the Causeway to Malaysia’s checkpoint.

A fuss-free option for groups of four (or more) is to share a one-way car transfer between Singapore and JB. There are car options that even seat up to 9 pax! You won’t need to alight at both checkpoints, and you can choose pick-up / drop-off points that suit your itinerary.

Opposite kranji mrt bus stop - JOhor Day Trip

When travelling around Johor for a day trip, Grab is an affordable and convenient option even for those on a budget. From Customs, a ride to KSL Mall costs about RM5, while further places like the Euro Fun Park cost only RM24.

To book a Grab, you’ll need to buy data for your day trip. Check out prices for data roaming with your service provider. Or, book a  4GB eSIM  (~S$9) via Klook.

9AM: Breakfast at Jalan Tan Hiok Nee

A short 15-minute walk from Customs, you’ll find the heritage street of Jalan Tan Hiok Nee . With various old-school eats and plenty of aesthetic cafes, Tan Hiok Nee is home to both the “old” and the “new” where trends and tradition co-exist.

Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory

People queueing at Hiap Joo Bakery - Johor Day Trip

    Be prepared to queue.

When visiting the Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory , you’ll probably find yourself in a long snaking line with people eager to get their hands on their delicious, fragrant banana cake.

While Hiap Joo Bakery does export its banana cakes to Singapore, the cheaper prices and joy of savouring these cakes fresh out of the oven are worth the trip down. Each box comes with 10 slices of cake, just enough to bring some home to your family!

Cost: RM12/box (~S$3.50) Opening hours: 7:30AM – 4:30PM, closed on Sun How to get there: 15min walk from JB CIQ Checkpoint ( Google Maps )

    Restoran Hua Mui

Restoran Hua Mui Entrance - Johor Day Trip

Another great breakfast place to visit before cafes open at 10AM is the open-air eatery, Restoran Hua Mui .

Their signature Hainanese Chicken Chop (RM18.90) is what most people go here for, while their toasts and sandwiches are also available if you’re looking for something lighter.

Friends having breakfast at Restoran Hua Mui - Things to do in JB

We tried some interesting drinks that you won’t encounter much in Singapore, like the Kopi Gu You — coffee with butter (RM3.80) and the Three Layer Milk Tea, also known as the Milk Kopi (RM6.90).

Opening hours: 8AM – 5PM How to get there: 1min walk from Hiap Joo Bakery ( Google Maps )

    Salahuddin Bakery

Salahuddin bakery pastries - Johor Day Trip

Salahuddin Bakery is one of JB’s oldest eateries and feels much like a living museum. Since opening back in 1937, they have retained their rustic and antique decor with Peranakan tiles, complete with old-school signages and calendars.

Salahuddin Bakery Oven - Johor Day Trip

Traditional bakes and pastries sold here include bread, cakes, and curry puffs — all baked in an old wood-fired oven. We tried the Karipap Ayam (RM3.50) and Sugar Puff (RM2), which is a good try if you like flaky and crumbly pastries!

11AM: Hunt for Instagrammable Street Art

Girl posing at Jalan Tan Hiok Nee street art - JB Day Trip

Before the midday sun hits, take a stroll around Jalan Tan Hiok Nee and its nearby streets. You’ll find vibrant street art and olden architecture that make for good outdoor photo spots!

There are several interesting murals and painted pillars along Jalan Trus and Jalan Ibrahim as well. We saw a large dugong on the side of a building along Jalan Ibrahim! Let us know in the comments if you spot any, and where 🕵️

    12PM: Cafe-hopping

The Replacement Cafe - Things to do in JB

Trust us when we say that Jalan Tan Hiok Nee has plenty of cafes — we saw about 10 cafes within a short 15-minute walk around the neighbourhood.

The well-known ones here are The Replacement – Lodge & Kitchen , Chaiwalla & Co. Container Cafe or Flowers in the Window . But here are a few more to check out:

    Bev C’afe

Friends at Bev C'afe - Things to do in JB

With rustic, woody interiors, Bev C’afe is relatively small but cosy. According to their menu, they serve what they like to eat! We found unique creations such as the Jackfruit Cheesecake (RM10) and Leicha Cake (RM16).

Food items at Bev C'afe - Things to do in JB

The Jackfruit Cheesecake is an interesting try, albeit a little tiny. The strong scent of jackfruit didn’t overpower the taste of the cake — overall, it produced a delicious but balanced flavour. The Citrus Honey Lemon Soda (RM14) also paired well with it and makes for a refreshing finish.

The cafe is located on the second floor, above the Bev C concept store .

Opening hours: 10AM – 6PM, closed on Wed How to get there: 1min walk from Salahuddin Bakery ( Google Maps )

Interior of Offee Cafe - Things to do in JB

Recommended by the staff at a now defunct gallery nearby, Offee Cafe boasts a sleek, white modern interior.

One can probably guess what it’s known for — yes, coffee! ☕️ They serve interesting creations including the Coconut Latte (RM12) and Oat Latte (RM12).

Friends drinking coffee at Offee Cafe - Johor Day Trip

While I’m more of a tea person, coffee lovers Shai and Bren gave the cafe and its coffee an 8/10 for its taste and ambience.

Opening hours: 8AM – 12AM How to get there: 1min walk from Bev C’afe ( Google Maps )

Bonus: Principle Cafe by T.A.M. (Jalan Trus)

Principle Cafe by T.A.M. at Jalan Trus - JB Day Trip

Special mention goes to Principle Cafe at Jalan Trus . It’s a 10-minute walk from Bev C’afe and Offee Cafe, but only a stone’s throw from our next stop in this JB itinerary.

The menu is pretty extensive, serving up breakfast items, pizzas, pastas, and a variety of cakes and tarts. We tried their Hojicha Terrine Tart (RM13) which had an intense hojicha taste and was ✨not too sweet ✨.

Hojicha Terrine Tart and coffee at Principle Cafe at Jalan Trus - JB Day Trip

Not gonna lie — prices are slightly higher than average, but worth it for the quality of its dishes and all-around zen vibes. Plus, you can now pre-purchase dining vouchers via Klook to save up to 20% off your bill!

Opening hours: 8:30AM – 6PM How to get there: 11min walk from Offee Cafe ( Google Maps )

2PM: Panoramic Skyline Views at Skyscape

Girl overlooking scenery at Skyscape - Johor Day Trip

Skyscape is most famous for the glass-floored sky bridge located on the 33rd floor.

At 149m above ground, the translucent glass floor may be challenging for people with acrophobia (fear of heights) — although Bren took it alright! Here, we enjoyed a panoramic overview of Johor Bahru and the Causeway bridge.

Friends looking at scenery at Skyscape - Things to do in Johor Bahru

Skyscape also offers complimentary activities included in your ticket, like virtual reality games, access to the observation deck, and the TikTok-famous LED tunnel amongst others.

We pre-booked our Skyscape adventure through Klook , so that all we had to do was have our QR code scanned at the entrance.

Cost: ~S$10.30/pax , RM5 (~S$1.50) for shoe covers (paid on site) Opening hours: 9:30AM – 5:30PM, last entry at 4PM How to get there: 5min walk from Principle Cafe ( Google Maps )

3PM: Shop Near KSL City Mall

KSL City Mall is no stranger to most Singaporeans; it’s easily accessible via Grab or by a feeder bus at Customs. You’re guaranteed to have something to do here as they have many establishments like KTVs, massage parlours, and shopping options.

But other than shopping inside the mall, step outside and you’ll find new interesting places to explore.

    Avery-Day Convenience Concept Store

Avery Day Convenience Store Entrance - Things to do in Johor Bahru

For all snack-lovers like myself, this unique convenience concept store could most probably make for your dream snack heaven 😍

Located outside KSL City Mall at the CBTL entrance, Avery Day sells snacks from various countries: Thailand, Taiwan, China, Korea, Japan… you name it. We recognised some familiar snacks but bought those that are less commonly found in SG.

Yoghurt Bottles - Things to do in Johor Bahru

For example, this Taiwanese yoghurt drink (RM9.90) caught our eyes as it came in the shape of a milk bottle. We can’t remember the last time we drank from milk bottles but we decided to try it once again that day.

It did feel weird drinking from a teat, but the yoghurt was tangy and refreshing.

Snacks at Avery Day - Things to do in Johor Bahru

Hot snacks like fried chicken, fries, and nuggets are also available. After you’ve done your shopping, you can enjoy your snacks at the outdoor sitting area on the second floor!

Opening hours: 9AM – 12AM How to get there: ~8min taxi/Grab ride from Skyscape ( Google Maps )

    Pasar Karat

Pasar Karat Night Market - Johor Day Trip

Take a step out of Avery Day and join the crowds at Pasar Karat . It’s a night market that stretches a few hundred metres down the street and will probably take a good 30 minutes to walk down the entire lane.

Pasar Karat JB Bazaar Chendol - Things to do in Johor Bahru

There were many stalls selling local delights such as fried carrot cake, Assam laksa, BBQ skewers, chendol (iced green jelly dessert) — we were absolutely spoilt for choice. We had a great dinner snacking on a little bit of everything.

Some stalls also sold everyday items like nail cutters, fire starters, and water bottles that make for good souvenirs to bring home.

7PM: Pop-up theme park at Euro Fun Park

Euro Fun Park Entrance - Johor Day Trip

To end off the night with a bang, visit Euro Fun Park , a pop-up theme park!

The rides here are pretty thrilling — I dare say they’re better than your typical neighbourhood fairs. Our top choices were definitely the Vortex and Space Flyer.

Space Flyer Euro Fun Park - Johor Bahru Day Trip

The Vortex takes you cartwheeling high up into the air while you spin around endlessly for a fun yet dizzy experience. The Space Flyer takes the usual spinning chair carnival ride but goes up high to 30m in height.

Euro Fun Park Ferris Wheel - Things to do in Johor Bahru

Rides are paid in tokens (RM2 each). For instance, the Vortex requires 15 tokens while the Space Flyer requires 10 tokens.

Kam Long Fish Head Soup - JB Itinerary

Save on cafe-hopping with discounted dining vouchers or skip the queue for popular food spots like Kam Long Ah Zai Curry Fish Head 💁🏻‍♀️ There are options for the Signature Curry Fish Head or Fish Tail (meat only), in S/M/L portions that serve up to six pax!

Johor Bahru Streets - Things to do in JB

I’ve been guilty of sticking to shopping malls on my usual visits to Johor Bahru (thank the weather 🥵), but this day trip to JB got me wanting to explore more of the city’s not-so-hidden gems that I’ve long overlooked.

One such area is Taman Mount Austin, a 20 to 30-minute drive from the JB City Centre. Aside from aesthetic cafes , there are interesting activity centres and craft workshops where you can tuft your own rugs or try your hand at decoden . Check out our 3D2N JB Itinerary for more things to do on a weekend trip!
