Wet Leg announce Splendour In The Grass sideshows for Melbourne and Sydney

The band will play two headline shows in addition to their Splendour set and support slots for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Wet Leg

Joining their appearance at this year’s Splendour In The Grass – as well as two sideshows supporting the Yeah Yeah Yeahs – UK duo Wet Leg have announced a pair of headline shows along the Australian east coast.

The night after their Melbourne show with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs on July 20, the band will take to Melbourne’s Howler for an intimate preview of their forthcoming debut album. They’ll do the same at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory the following Monday (July 25), the night after they open for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at the Hordern Pavilion.

Sandwiched between those four dates will be their set at Splendour In The Grass, where they’ll play on July 22. Tickets to the festival are sold out, but Wet Leg’s headline shows go on sale at 10am local time this Friday (March 11), with a pre-sale kicking off a day earlier. Tickets to their shows with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are on sale now .

Wet Leg’s self-titled debut album will be out on April 8 via Domino. In addition to their hit ‘Chaise Longue’ – which came in at Number 45 on triple j’s Hottest 100 for 2021 – the album features singles ‘Wet Dream’, ‘Too Late Now’ , ‘Oh No’ and ‘Angelica’ .

NME featured the album in its list of records to look forward to in 2022 , with writer Rhian Daly saying: “Once in a blue moon, a seemingly perfect new band just appears out of nowhere. In 2021, that band was Wet Leg, who struck gold four times with early singles and, now, are ready to follow that up with a full album.

“Expect lyrics dripping in dry humour, wiry post-punk riffs and hints of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Le Tigre, Violent Femmes and more to make their debut sparkle.”

The band were also featured in this year’s NME 100 . “Fun might not always be considered the ‘coolest’ thing in some music circles, but Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers’ brand of innuendo-filled absurdity sticks two fingers up at anyone who cares about such a notion,” Daly said of the duo.

Last month saw Wet Leg share a cover of Ronan Keating‘s ‘Life Is A Rollercoaster’ . They covered the former Boyzone singer’s 2000 single for a new Apple Music Home Session , with Teasdale saying: “It’s been such a whirlwind for us as a band, so I think we chose to cover ‘Life Is A Rollercoaster’ just because we felt like we could relate to the sentiment of it.”

Wet Leg’s 2022 Australian tour dates are:

JULY Wednesday 20 – Melbourne, Margaret Court Arena (w/ Yeah Yeah Yeahs) Thursday 21 – Melbourne, Howler Friday 22 – Byron Bay, Splendour In The Grass Sunday 24 – Sydney, Hordern Pavilion (w/ Yeah Yeah Yeahs) Monday 25 – Sydney, Oxford Art Factory

Wet Leg Review – A Night Sydney Fans Won’t Take For Granted

By David James Young

It says a lot about Wet Leg that they were able to recruit artists entirely capable of filling out the Oxford Art Factory in their own right as support acts. The Buoys warmed up the crowd on the second night of Wet Leg’s stint in Sydney, and the band’s songwriting chops and on-stage chemistry were on proud display throughout the half-hour performance.

The Buoys’ Hottest 100-charting ‘Lie To Me Again’ prompted the first of many sing-alongs for the evening, while the urgent new single ‘Red Flags’ and the thrashing kiss-off, ‘Bad Habit’, were equally impactful. The foursome’s on-stage chemistry was apparent in all the little things – the way front person Zoe Catterall locked horns with bassist Courtney Cunningham as the instrumentals rode out, and how everyone gave a wide berth to lead guitarist Hilary Geddes to spotlight one of her unmistakable, shit-hot guitar solos. A kind of magic.

Wet Leg reignite Oxford Art Factory

AUSTRALIA, WE ARE IN YOU ? pic.twitter.com/az6uX3U2s7 — Wet Leg (@wetlegband) July 21, 2022

After years of seated shows and reduced capacity, this felt like a return to the days of old for Oxford Art Factory. You couldn’t have fit another body in the room with a crowbar, and it was all to catch a glimpse of one of the biggest prospects in indie rock right now.

This was Wet Leg’s final night on an Australian tour that began with a now-legendary front-bar show at the Lansdowne, which saw hundreds – if not thousands – of folks lining up all afternoon to get amongst it. The band were fresh from the aborted day one of Splendour in the Grass , which saw them take to the stage at the nearby Brunswick Picture House for a last-minute show instead, as well as an appearance on triple j’s  Like A Version.

The UK band’s co-leaders, singer Rhian Teasdale and lead guitarist Hester Chambers, are both timid and softly-spoken, but performing the songs from their eponymous debut sparked something within them. Bolstered by their three-piece backing band, the duo fed off the sold-out crowd’s energy – be that via some extra hip movement when singing of “touching yourself” during ‘Wet Dream’, or grinning madly at the makeshift “yeah yeah yeah” choir assembled during the chorus of ‘Supermarket’.

It could have all ended with a rambunctious run-through of the band’s signature song ‘Chaise Lounge’. The crowd bellowed “WHAT?” back at Teasdale when she asked “Excuse me?”, and the hand claps along with Henry Holmes’ kick drum felt like a football stadium had come to life.

For one thing, they’d run out of material – including two previously-unreleased tracks, ‘I Wanna Be Abducted By A UFO’ and ‘Obvious’, we literally heard the entire discography. So, imagine the surprise when the band returned for one last song: their take on The Chats’ ‘Smoko’. With her own set of speed-dealers on, Teasdale’s deadpan delivery of Eamon Sandwith’s ode to the mandated work break was simultaneously hilarious and triumphant.

As George Michael’s ‘Careless Whisper’ blasted over the PA and the room slowly emptied, there was a collective understanding of just how special the night had been. We’ll never see the Isle Of Wight twosome in a venue this small again – their next visit is already booked, supporting Harry Styles next year on his stadium tour . But regardless of what happens next in Wet Leg’s career, this felt like a major “I was there” moment. Were you?

Get to know Wet Leg, the muffin-buttering duo making guitar music sassy again

A 2021 press shot of Wet Leg

  • X (formerly Twitter)

The UK duo only have two singles to their name, but Wet Leg are one of 2021’s buzziest acts - already hailed by some as the “best new band on the planet” with celebrity fans like Iggy Pop , Paramore’s Hayley Williams , and triple j’s own Dr. Karl.

Makes sense, really. It’s easy to be smitten by the strength of their sassy, snappy singles ‘Chaise Longue’ and ‘Wet Dream’. They’re instantly catchy, built around tension-and-release rhythms and zippy guitars, and more importantly, bursting with personality.

A big part of the charm is their quotable lyrics, delivered in half-spoken vocals with the deadpan punch of a one-liner:

‘ Is your muffin buttered? Would you like us to assign someone to butter your muffin?’

‘baby, do you want to come home with me i’ve got buffalo ‘66 on dvd’ .

Whether riffing on Mean Girls or an obscure Vincent Gallo indie flick, they’re playfully tongue-in-cheek and super-memorable.

Adding to the feeling of the arrival of a fully-formed act are the witty duo’s self-directed music videos and cottage-core aesthetic - all Mormon fashion and straw hats.

Wet Leg is Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers, close friends who both hail from the Isle of Wight, an island off the south coast of England they describe as “one big small town.”

“It’s very slow and steady,” the pair tell Bridget on triple j Good Nights . “There are no tunnels or bridges, so the only way to get there is by expensive boats.”

Much softer spoken in person than you’d anticipated from the cool, confident kooks of their music, they point out the island is best known as the location Paul McCartney dreams of retiring to in The Beatles classic ‘When I’m Sixty-Four’ , and for the historic Isle of Wight festival, which the pair have already played at.

Rhian and Hester could originally be seen gigging as part of a previous project that was “more folky and, lyrically, quite introspective and sad.” But after seeing how much enjoyment rowdier, louder guitar bands and their audiences were having on stage, they “stopped doing that and started Wet Leg [in 2019], just for fun really.”

From the coquettish invitation in ‘Chaise Longue’ to go backstage and drink warm beer on the titular furniture, to transforming into a lobster for the ‘Wet Dream’ video, the duo are the first to admit there’s something “quite silly” about what they do.

Even the band’s name is a “reminder not to take yourself too seriously, and that was really important when we started Wet Leg. It just has to be fun.”

Influential indie label Domino Records (home to Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, Blood Orange) saw their potential early on and swiftly signed the band. Smart investment - before the ink had barely dried Wet Leg’s debut single blew up.

‘Chaise Longue’ now boasts over 4 million streams worldwide, and here in Australia, it topped Shazam’s Discovery Chart and Spotify’s Viral 50. The duo have also been bombarded with notifications from the @triplejplays account as one of the most played acts on yours truly .

“We’re like ‘ What is going on in Australia!? ’” Hester says with bewilderment. And helping lead the Wet Leg fandom Down Under is Dr. Karl. Have the British twosome heard of our beloved Science Hour host and fashion icon?

“Yeah we have! Thank you for flying the Wet Leg flag!”

What’s next for Wet Leg?

Having only played “four gigs before lockdown”, the duo are amid a busy post-pandemic UK tour schedule. They’ve already turned in much-talked-about sets at Latitude and Green Man festivals, and following supports for Jungle, Declan McKenna and Inhaler, they’ll open up for Shame next month .

“That’s so cool, so scary, and really intimidating,” admits Rhian. “But apparently they’re very nice.”

“It’s quite a new thing, neither of us are very confident guitarists but we were definitely inspired by seeing really energetic and heavier bands,” Hester explains. Rhian adds:

“I think we look like we don’t give a hoot.. but actually we’re just nerds."

“Last gig, I hit my head on the microphone and it went ‘DOOF’ into the big venue.”

They’re also sketching out a debut album for early 2022. “We’re working on some recordings… hoping to maybe get [it] out in Spring but we’ll see.”

Before that, there’s a third single, which sounds “a bit all over the shop” and as different from ‘Wet Dream’ as that saucy break-up song was to the detached cool of ‘Chaise Longue.

“It’s got three sections… It comes from different words almost, it’s like two songs rolled into one.”

It’s been a solid two for two on the Wet Leg scoreboard already, and you know what they say… third time’s a charm.

Wet Leg Announce New Tour Dates, Share New Mini Documentary Chronicling Their U.S. East Coast Tour

Self-titled album out now via domino.

British duo Wet Leg (Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers) have announced some new North American tour dates and shared On Tour with Wet Leg , a new mini documentary chronicling their recent U.S. East Coast tour. It includes a brief moment where they meet Jack White in Nashville. Watch it below, followed by the new tour dates, which are on sale now.

Wet Leg released their self-titled debut album earlier in the month via Domino. It landed at #1 on the official UK album chart and in America also made it to #14 on the Billboard 200 album chart (and at #4 on the Billboard Album Sales Chart). Wet Leg also debuted at #1 on the Australian album chart and the band have also announced that they will be opening for Harry Styles on a string of dates in that country and in New Zealand, as well as playing their first shows in Japan.

Wet Leg features the songs “Chaise Longue” (which was one of our Songs of the Week ), “Wet Dream,” which topped our Songs of the Week list, “Oh No,” and “Too Late Now,” the latter of which also topped our Songs of the Week list. Then they shared a video for “Oh No.” That was followed by another single, “Angelica,” shared via another one of their amusing self-directed videos. “Angelica” also made our Songs of the Week list.

Then the duo did a Tiny Desk (Home) Concert for NPR, performed “Chaise Longue” on Late Night with Seth Meyers , and stopped by SiriusXMU to perform a cover of Madonna’s “Material Girl.” Then in March Wet Leg stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon , where they performed “Wet Dream” on the broadcast show and “Chaise Longue” as a web-exclusive.

Wet Leg released one last pre-release single, “Ur Mum,” via another amusing video. “Ur Mum” also made our Songs of the Week list. Then the band shared a “Live on the Porch” session featuring them performing five songs from the album in their native Isle of Wight.

“Chaise Longue” was #1 on our Top 130 Songs of 2021 list.
