There are endless things to do in La Manga, Spain to help you enjoy a wonderful trip.

La Manga is a coastal paradise, splitting the Mediterranean Sea and the Mar Menor Lagoon. The thin strip, which is 21km (13 miles) long, averages a width of a mere 100 meters (330ft). What lies within (and on either side) makes it a destination for Spaniards and international travelers alike.

Completely different from the beaches in Malaga or the towns in Costa Brava . La Manga is laid back, but bustling. The beaches are stunning and the waters are calm. It is a paradise for beach lovers.

Days here can be spent on La Manga’s many beaches, each with its own golden sands and tranquil waters. They create a supreme base for on-water adventures from kayaking to windsurfing. The gems below the surface, however, have created one of Europe’s best diving destinations.

Come nightfall, markets open up, bars turn their lights down slightly and the clubs prepare to bring you into the early hours.

How to Get to La Manga

With La Manga’s location along a thin strip of land, you won’t be shocked that getting here requires several steps. The nearest airport, Corvera Airport Murcia (RMU) is around 60km (37 miles) away and is the main port of arrival for those coming from overseas.

Those arriving here can choose to rent a car (our recommendation) and enjoy a 45-minute drive to La Manga. Travelers can also take a taxi (around €55 for four passengers).

La Manga has a bus station which receives regular arrivals from Cartagena and Murcia. ALSA and Bilman Bus are two options to take from either city.

You can take a train into the Murcia region. However, the nearest train station to La Manga is around 33km (20 miles) away in Cartagena. From there, you can rent a car, take a cab, or jump on a bus.

Getting Around La Manga

The best and most convenient way to get around La Manga is with a rental car. We recommend doing this as far in advance as possible as the airport is smaller than other international airports in Spain . At 21km long (13 miles) and with some great nearby day trips, a car will go a long way.

If you prefer to forgo the hire car, you can make use of the local bus network. This runs the entire length of the strip, beginning in the south at Cabo de Palos and running as far north as Veneziola.

The main route sticks to the busier southern end of La Manga, with services every 30 minutes. Every 2 hours, a bus completes the entire journey from Cabo de Palos to Veneciola.

Bicycle hire is another common way to get around La Manga. Travelers looking to complete shorter journeys and beach hop with find plenty of places to hire along the Strip.

There are so many amazing beaches in La Manga which is why most people come here for a relaxed beach holiday.

Where to Stay in La Manga

La Manga is built around tourism and there is a seemingly endless array of accommodation. In fact, much of the La Manga Strip consists of hotels, villas, resorts, and apartments.

These are some of the absolute best things to do in La Manga, Spain. Whether you want adventure, leisure, or to find the best local beach spots, there is a little bit of something for everyone in La Manga attractions.

1. Wander Plaza Bohemia

The La Manga Strip is over 20 kilometers long. So it certainly helps to hone in on one area to get your shopping fix in and even enjoy a night on the town.

At the height of summer, this is the place to be in La Manga. That is when you aren’t lazing on the beach on either side of the Strip. The revitalized Plaza Bohemia has great shopping, with worldwide brands. But it’s the arts and crafts market that runs every night through summer that provides the area with a great atmosphere.

Market browsing as the sun goes down inevitably turns into dinner. Dinner turns into drinks and you’ll be happy to know those chic cocktail bars and happening clubs lie just around the corner.

2. Scuba Dive

The Mediterranean Sea’s crystal clear waters provide the perfect scene for a scuba dive here in La Manga. Whether you’re looking to get your PADI, or you already have your certificate, the rewards beneath the surface are quickly apparent.

The water beyond the lagoon just off the coast of Cabo de Palos offers some of the most biodiverse diving in Europe. With great clarity, you can explore to incredible depth as you appreciate sheer 40m cliff walls, take in the colorful corals, and count the endless exotic fish.

Barracudas, morays, swordfish, and octopus join in for the ride as you check out some of the 50-plus ships that have sunk in the surrounding waters. Many from the 1st and 2nd World Wars.

Scuba Murcia is one of the most professional outfitters in the area. They have top-quality equipment, experienced dive instructors, and both PADI and TDI courses available.

There is a lot to love about this region of Murcia, but the coastline has to be my personal favorite.

3. Go for a Kayak

We don’t blame you if you prefer to keep your head above water. The lagoon on La Manga’s western side makes for the perfect kayak spot for all abilities.

Mar Menor is Europe’s largest saltwater lagoon and the calm waters create a relaxing playground.

Whether solo or with a partner, you can enjoy a unique perspective of La Manga’s beautiful scenery. The serenity of the lagoon, aided by the calm presence of anchored yachts and small fish skirting around soothes the tiring arms and helps to explore even further.

If you want to take your adventure up a notch, grab a set of snorkeling gear and see more of what lies beneath the surface.

4. Relax at Isla del Ciervo Beach

It’s been a busy start to your La Manga experience. Soon you’ll want to see what all the fuss is about the area’s gorgeous beaches. You can do just that with a day of relaxing at Isla del Ciervo Beach .

You may spot this beloved beach from your kayak as it’s found within the lagoon’s boundaries. However, this cozy isle is separate from the streets of La Manga, providing oodles of natural beauty.

Much of its serenity lies in its remoteness. Not so much in distance, but accessibility. One can only arrive here by boat, or time the low tide when you can cross on two feet.

Either way, the northern end provides golden sands and turquoise waters. While the southern offers rejuvenating mud with skin-healing qualities.

There are several trails and viewpoints to enjoy around La Manga.

5. Visit Cabo de Palos

One of the gems of the Murcia region, Cabo de Palos, links to Mar Menor and is a place that can quickly steal your heart. The beloved destination among Spaniards is a happening place in the summer. Far removed from its beginnings as a sleepy fishing village.

However, as much as Cabo de Palos has found its way onto the map, its beaches remain wild. At the end of palm-lined streets and lux villas lies a rugged coast with hidden and quaint coves waiting to be explored. Our favorite? Cala Reona , which borders Calblanque Natural Park.

Beyond the beaches is a gastronomic town still linked to its seafaring ways. The dining here is delightful and its boat-filled harbor is a haven for those who love fresh catch.

You can’t go too far wrong at Restaurante Miramar or the more casual but equally delicious El Mosqui .

6. Enjoy the sunset by the Estacio Lighthouse

A soaring black and white tower, with a 6th-order light beam, marks the end of the channel connecting Mar Menor to the glistening Mediterranean Sea. The lighthouse is the modern iteration of a long line of defense towers that have stood in this place since as far back as the 1500s.

The 29m (95ft) Estacio Lighthouse is more than just a beacon for seafarers, but a beaming sight for all who visit. Through the day it welcomes those wandering the edges of the canal. The lighthouse’s spot on the end of the breakwater provides marvelous views back toward La Manga, the lagoon, and across to Isla Grosa.

However, it’s when the sun starts to fall that the real show begins. A candy-colored sky combines with the presence of the Estacio Lighthouse to create one of the best sunsets in La Manga.

7. Explore Veneziola

North of La Manga lies one of the region’s most peculiar destinations. Veneziola, reminiscent of its namesake Venice, the town harbors a small, but eloquent network of canals.

In the center lies a large islet that is enveloped by a circulating canal. After crossing a bridge, the road spreads like a “Y” leading you to various sections of sand from which to enjoy the views.

More than the canals, Veneziola is known for its iconic bridge, Puente de la Risa. Inspired again by Venice, the arched bridge rises at an incredibly steep angle. So much so that even a little speed could provide your vehicle with some air on its descent. Or, in a car with little clearance, you may simply get stuck.

La Manga is a busy and built up part of Spain, but that means plenty of hotels and restaurants to choose from.

8. See the History of Cartagena

Just half an hour away, Cartagena is an easy day trip from La Manga. After some time on the water and enjoying the scenery, mix things up a bit by exploring the historic heart of Murcia.

With over 3,000 years of recorded history, there is so much to discover in Cartagena . But so much also remains hidden. The best example includes the relatively recent discovery of the Roman Theatre of Cartagena. With the adjacent museum only opened 15 years ago, you can take a journey back to 5BC.

Spanish charm and culinary excellence are infused into Cartagena alongside its storied past. A day of exploring excavations, dining on tapas, and wandering old streets provides a memorable balance to your time in La Manga.

There is a lot to explore in nearby Cartagena. You may want to spend a few days there exploring and then finish your trip relaxing on the beaches of La Manga.

9. Sunbathe at Cala del Pino

An alcove in an area renowned for its long, golden beaches, Cala del Pino , is unique. Rather than Mediterranean views as far as the eye can see, this beach is a mere 150 meters long (492ft), looking out into the saltwater lagoon.

So why do we love it? Tucked away in La Manga, Cala del Pino is flanked by pine trees and a rising hillside. Its soft ivory sands lead to relaxing, calm waters, creating a scene of opulent relaxation.

It’s idyllic but great for travelers. The on-site chiringuito beach bar serves up zesty drinks and snacks. While the summertime lifeguards make it a safe place for the whole family to swim.

10. Discover the Calblanque Natural Park

Neighbor to the charming Cabo de Palos, Calblanque Natural Park , spans almost 2,000 hectares. Wild salt flats and marshes lead to ancient fossil dunes flanked by rugged cliffs.

The opulence of the Mediterranean is left behind for a protected area that is rugged, exciting, and harsh. There is much beauty in this. Here you’ll find nature trails and cycling paths guiding you to the park’s far reaches.

Removed from the coastal developments of La Manga, an unspoiled world presents a wide range of bird life. Flamingos call the park home, as well as egrets, falcons, and eagles. They’re joined by smaller predators such as foxes, while reptiles can be spotted soaking in the Spanish sun.

Explore the islands and beaches around La Manga to get away from the crowds, especially if you are visiting during the summer months.

11. Trek to the summit of Monte Blanco

When you hear the word “trek”, your mind immediately jumps to towering peaks and long jaunts into the wild. Well, La Manga is a different type of destination. There are some great hikes along the coast and through the Natural Park. But to reach a summit here, head up to Monte Blanco.

This “mountain” is a mere 46 meters tall (150ft). So it barely scrapes over the Estacio Lighthouse.

With that said, you can climb up this diminutive volcanic outcrop for some excellent views. Come for sunrise and gaze east as the world fills once more with bright colors. Find the location of the peak here .

12. Book a Tee Time

There are five golf courses in La Manga, with the great game providing as much a reason to travel here as the beaches themselves. Those who love to play will quickly find themselves at home here.

With 300 days of sunshine a year and as one of the warmest places in Spain in winter , you’ll feel good about getting through a round without the threat of rain. The question then becomes, which course should I choose?

The Roda Golf Course is the highest rated and is a part of the namesake beach resort. The course is great for beginners while being challenging enough for advanced players teeing off from the back tees.

The most common destination for golfers, however, is La Manga Club . Home to three courses, one of which is rated in Europe’s top 100, there’s a round for all skill levels.

La Manga del Mar Menor Strip, Lagoon & Beaches

La Manga del Mar Menor is a popular strip of land on the eastern coastline of Spain. This strip separates the Mar Menor lagoon from the Mediterranean Sea. Known as the ” Sleeve of the minor Sea “, this  area resides on the Costa Calida  (warm coast).

Over the course of time, the volcanic reefs at the north and south points of the Mar Menor held back the sand. The Sea current dragged sand, rocks and sea vegetation into the bay. As a result, La Manga strip appears as it is today.

One noticeable thing when entering the Mar Menor is it’s distinct lack of waves and the calm water. This is because the strip of lands is keeping the waves from the Mediterranean Sea out.

La Manga del Mar Menor, Costa Calida

La Manga del Mar Menor is usually shortened to La Manga Strip. This strip has a length of 22 km and a width of between 100 – 1200 metres. The Mar Menor lagoon started life as a bay allowing easy access to the Mediterranean Sea. Running adjacent to the strip are popular tourism areas such as  Los Alcazares which often hosts an air show  and San Javier.

The water temperature is usually much warmer than the Sea. The Mar Menor temperature rarely drops below 15 Celsius. Inside the bay are the islands of Isla Perdiguera, Isla del Baron and Isla del Ciervo. All three tiny islands are visible when taking a dip in the Mar Menor.

Beaches & Watersports

El Arenal (as shown above) is one of the top beaches of La Manga del Mar Menor. Located on the strip, this beautiful b each extends for 1.8 km’s. The sun reflects off the golden sand as calm waves wash up on the shore. El Arenal is not the widest beach, the average width is around 20 metres. This beach is very accessible with several bus stops close by.

Some of the other great beaches here include Pedruchillo, Alemanes and El Vivero. Playa Estacio, Lebeche Ensenada del Esparto and Puerto Bello are several more.

Most of the mentioned beaches have excellent water sports and activities on offer. Windsurfing is particularly popular here among other boarding sports. The conditions here are excellent for windsurfing and many other water activities. Sailing and water skiing also draw people from far and wide.

La Manga strip is open all year round for business due to it’s constant flow of visitors. Many choose to visit La Manga in the winter to relax. There are less tourists around but the temperature is still mild.

Those that are new to these sports have several local schools and training courses to teach you. La Manga Wind (link above) specialise in teaching beginners and advanced students. They provide courses for windsurfing, kite-surfing and sailing. The courses also range from beginners to advanced.

Nightlife & Restaurants

La Manga is not only about the beaches. There is a vast range of shops, bars, supermarkets and discos for nightlife. The strip houses many excellent hotels and restaurants. El Golleron (as shown above) is a must experience restaurant and club. You can dine on the beach with views out over the Mar Menor. Escuela de Pieter and El Sitio de mi Recreo are two more high quality restaurants to check out.

La Manga Club

La Manga Club is without doubt one of the top resorts on the Costa Calida. This amazing resort offers everything you could want for a fantastic holiday. This is just one of the super locations offering  Murcia golf properties  at discount prices.  La Manga Club is like a small village of it’s own, full of wonderful activities to enjoy. Golfers tend to flock here to pit their wits and skill against the super golf course (picture above).

The resort offers a superb wellness centre. Here you will find a spa with many health and beauty facilities. Fine dining here is no problem with gourmet food on offer. La Manga Club boasts many other sporting activities such as tennis. There are always special offers for a short break available.

Climate and Weather

La Manga del Mar Menor has an average yearly temperatures of 19.3 Celsius. This area also sees around 325 days of sunshine each year. In the summer months of June, July and August there is very little rainfall if any. The average temperature is between 25-35 Celsius during the warmer months.

The Costa Calida generally is quite arid, this is also true for the entire province of Murcia. The temperature during the winter months will seldom drop below 6 Celsius. This can climb to as high as 15 Celsius at times. The colder months tend to be quite mild compared to other cooler parts along the coastline.

La Manga is a resort town and is located on the southern most tip of the Costa Blanca. Some argue that it is the start of the Costa Calida the warm coast.

La Manga can easily be reached from the international airports of Alicante and Murcia.

La Manga is ideally situated close to San Javier Murcia airport where many low-cost airlines such as Ryanair fly into or there is the option of flying into Alicante airport a little bit further north which is approximately 1 hours drive away from La Manga.

If you are staying at a resort such as The La Manga Club you don’t necessarily need to hire a car unless of course you’re wanting to explore the Costa Calida area which has a lot of sights and attractions.

One can easily get an airport transfer to La Manga or catch a taxi from the airport.

The La Manga strip is a strip of land nineteen kilometres long and one hundred meters wide is a “sleeve” of land which separates the Mar Menor from the Mediterranean Sea. It is cut off with natural channels which keep the two in contact with each other. This area was largely untouched until the 1960’s where then it began a massive transformation making it the tourist resort it is today with major infrastructure.

An Introduction to La Manga Strip: A Paradise Between Two Seas

La Manga Strip, correctly named La Manga del Mar Menor, is a strip of land located 35 km northeast of Cartagena on the Costa Cálida in southeast Spain.  

This small but incredibly popular strip of land – just 21 km long and no more than 100 m wide at some points – separates the Mediterranean sea from the Mar Menor (minor sea) lagoon. 

The climate is typically Mediterranean, with warm summers and dry winters, boasting over 320 days of sunshine a year.

Interestingly, it’s where many Spanish families choose to come for their holidays, and the locals don’t like it being called ‘the strip’!

The population of La Manga del Mar Menor

During the off-season months, there is a population of just over 2250 people (in 2020) in La Manga del Mar Menor, with all the usual services for healthcare, police, library, schools, etc., remaining accessible. 

Fast forward to the summer, and the population rises dramatically due to the resort attracting many tourists from all over the world. Numbers can increase to as many as 250,000 in peak summer months. 

There is something for everyone at La Manga Strip, and just as you might expect, typically tasty Mediterranean food features on most menus.

Fresh fish and shellfish are brought in daily by the fishermen from Cabo de Palos and play a starring role on most restaurant menus, along with grilled meats and healthy, delicious salads.

If you haven’t experienced the typical Spanish rice dish of paella, give it a try and savour the deliciousness of saffron rice with succulent chicken or juicy prawns and fresh vegetables.

If you want to indulge in beachside eating, head for a chiringuito . Many will serve just drinks and tapas, whilst others offer a wide variety of meals to suit all tastes. Of particular note is Chiringuito La Cangreja , which was featured by Forbes in its list of top chiringuitos to visit in Spain, for 2020, 2021, and 2022.

Another great place, offering a lively atmosphere with reasonably priced restaurants and bars, is Puerto Tomás Maestre – the most significant marina in La Manga del Mar Menor – where you can indulge in a spot of ‘people watching’ or ‘yacht envy’ whilst taking in the stunning views and sunsets.

You can choose from a wide variety of glorious sandy beaches for chilled beach vibes, cool beers, and stunning sunsets.

On the Mar Menor side, white sandy beaches with the gently sloping shorelines and crystal clear waters of Europe’s largest saltwater lagoon offer perfect bathing conditions for families with children .

Sometimes, it’s possible to wade out to as far as 50 m whilst the water remains waist-deep. Another bonus is the water temperature, which rarely drops below 15 degrees Celsius. In peak season, these beaches can be bustling with holidaymakers so you’ll need to get there early to claim your spot!

If you prefer a more dramatic beach scene with rolling waves, you can cross the road to the Mediterranean side and get lost in the vast expanse of coastal beaches – typically with lower occupancy due to their vastness!

Beach services on this side vary depending on the size and potential occupancy. Services may include lifeguards, toilets, showers, disabled access, wooden walkways, footbaths, parasol and sunbed hire, hammock rental, wifi, and children’s play areas.

Some beaches are designated no-smoking beaches, such as Playa Mistral .

Water sports

The calm waters of the Mar Menor make for a water sports heaven, especially for those who are less confident and prefer to avoid the crashing waves of the Mediterranean.  

Both sides of the strip offer opportunities for all kinds of watersports, from gentle snorkeling, SUP, and kayaking, to kite surfing, water skiing, and scuba diving. If you decide to take a boat tour or hire a jet ski, you can visit some of the smaller islands and coves surrounding the strip.

Whatever your level or grade, you will find specialised schools and places to hire equipment for a gentle sail or an adrenalin kick!  

We say long, hot days are perfect for fun in the water . 

Various supermarkets are situated along La Manga Strip, catering to all your essential needs. These include two Spar shops and several Dia supermarkets. 

In addition, in the southern part of the Mar Menor, in the Cabo de Palos area, is the larger Spanish supermarket, Mercadona.

Zoco La Manga is a lively shopping and leisure complex with shops, boutiques, bars, restaurants, and eateries.

If you’re looking for a wider choice of stores with international brands, Centro Comercial Dos Mares is approximately a 30-minute drive to nearby San Javier at the northern end of the strip, and La Zenia Boulevard , the largest shopping and leisure complex in Alicante, is only a 45-minute drive.

Murcia and Cartagena are less than an hour away for a full-day’s shopping expedition if you fancy a change from beach life to take in a little culture.

Banks on La Manga Strip

There are several banks and cash points along the strip, including CaixaBank, BBVA, and Banco Sabadell.

Whether you’re on holiday in the area or thinking of purchasing a property here, you’ll want to make sure your health needs will be met.

There are three surgeries , although two of them only open seasonally.

Costa Calida Health Centre is available full-time and located in the Urbanization Castillo de Mar. This centre provides general medicine, 24-hour A&E, and a paediatrician on-site.

North Manga Health Centre and Cavanna Health Centre are only open in the summer months.

• Las Colinas Golf 

This championship golf course, awarded “Best Golf Course in Spain” (five times!) at the World Golf Awards, is one of the 100 best golf courses in Europe (Golf World magazine). Meandering through a lush valley with views of the Mediterranean sea, this 18-hole, par 71 course is complemented by a driving range, putting green, and a golf academy.

In addition to golf, Las Colinas Golf & Country Club offers a range of sports and leisure activities, including tennis and paddle, a well-equipped gym, a swimming pool, and wellness treatments at the Las Colinas Sports & Health Club. The area also boasts three restaurants, a Beach Club: WOW Beach, and a range of luxury villas and apartments.

Mar Menor golf course is located 30 minutes from the Region de Murcia International Airport (RMU) and approximately 65 minutes from Alicante airport.

Originally the first course in the Polaris World group, the Mar Menor course near Torre Pacheco is a good resort course. The first nine holes were designed by Dave Thomas, par 37, 3,275 m. The last nine holes were designed by Nicklaus Design, par 35, 2,878 m, with wide fairways.

If you decide to play in this field designed by two of the best golf designers, you will enjoy two very different experiences on the same course.

The nearest airport is Region de Murcia International Airport (RMU), which is a 45-minute drive away. There’s a regular bus service and taxis are available for those who prefer not to drive themselves.

Alicante (ALC) airport is approximately 1 hour and 25 minutes by car.

Travelling by train from Alicante airport takes approximately 4 hours 45 minutes and does require a bus to the train station from the airport, and a short taxi ride to La Manga del Mar Menor from the train station.

Local Strolls: 10K steps down and around LA’s (in)famous Sunset Strip

In our 10K steps series, we’ve asked writers for the best places to get in your steps while enjoying city sights, favorite routes and some secret detours. Here, James March leads us down and around LA’s Sunset Strip – an infamous party zone that’s also surprisingly lovely.

“Drive west on Sunset, to the sea,” sings Donald Fagan on Steely Dan’s 1978 track “ Babylon Sisters .” Over a slinky, organ-led beat, Fagan’s drawl evokes LA excess – and nowhere epitomizes the city’s kitschy allure more than the Sunset Strip. 

Though it stretches a full 23 miles from downtown Los Angeles to the Californian coast, the iconic Sunset Blvd is largely associated with a small, 1.7-mile section often called the Sunset Strip , which runs through West Hollywood . Things are more genteel now since the days when Guns ’n’ Roses et al threw TVs from hotel windows – look out for the cute little delivery robots that have been rolling around of late near Sunset and Holloway – but the glamor is still here in spades, with WeHo (as locals it) playing host to LA’s hottest restaurants and coolest hotels. 

In some ways, WeHo’s streets seem more “LA” than anywhere else in town – think cartoonishly skinny coconut palms, sweating joggers, pocket-sized dogs, silent Teslas and droning helicopters above. But for a famously car-centric city, the city of West Hollywood (it’s independent of the City of Los Angeles) is also walkable, with curving avenues and gentle backstreets that feel vaguely European. In other words, perfect for a stroll. 

With plenty of seductive stops along the way, there’s a lot to take in. So we recommend this tour, which features Sunset Blvd’s greatest hits alongside some catchier, deeper cuts. And since this is somewhere that gets its biggest kicks when evening falls, we suggest starting this walk after lunch. 

Where to start: Chateau Marmont

If it’s good enough for Anthony Bourdain, it’s good enough for me. Tony’s favorite LA hotel was the Chateau Marmont – and its turreted white perch high above Sunset and Marmont Lane, at the eastern end of the Sunset Strip, is a striking starting point for our walk. Completed in 1929, it’s been an exclusive and at times notorious address for LA’s glitterati – and you’ll need a pretty hefty bank account to check in here for a night or two.

Need some fuel for the walk west? Laid-back Mexican joint Pinches Taco sits on the south side of Sunset Blvd in the shadow of the Chateau Marmont. The indulgent breakfast burrito here ($11.25) might become your new favorite dish.

Explore both classic and cool new stays 

Speaking of hotels, some of West Hollywood’s most iconic properties flank Sunset as it gently curves downhill – so make the short walk west from Pinches Taco and into West Hollywood. Rising like an art deco wedding cake, the 1931 Sunset Tower is perhaps the most picturesque example to explore (especially its sleek mahogany bar), while across the street the Andaz was once a wild rock ’n’ roll haunt and Led Zeppelin’s preferred area residence (they sometimes booked out six whole floors). Inside the lobby, you’ll find large blown-up images of Robert Plant, Jimi Hendrix and other rock stars who once lived it up here.

The walk: Cross back onto the south side of Sunset and continue west, past sparkling new additions like The Pendry and 1 Hollywood West . A fine budget option, the music-themed Hotel Ziggy has live gigs and DJs playing in the evenings, while its quirky B-side Pizza offers indulgent slices and full-size pies. Hang a left on La Cienega and head down the steep street until you reach Santa Monica Blvd. 

Stop for a hot dog at a food truck like no other

An LA institution since 1946 and a fine example of 20th-century novelty architecture, Tail o’ the Pup is a colorful hot dog stand in the shape of an actual hot dog. Sure, it sounds silly – but in a city that occasionally takes itself a little too seriously, maybe a hot dog from a hot dog–shaped joint is just what you need. There’s also a buzzy new speakeasy tiki bar upstairs behind a certain doorway (but I didn’t tell you that).

The walk: If you’re interested in seeing more of LA on two wheels, then pop in next door to Bikes and Hikes and book one of their superb guided e-bike tours.

The quiet backstreets of WeHo are a serene pleasure. Cross Santa Monica Blvd onto W Knoll Dr: the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Chamberlain Hotel is not only a fabulously hidden stay, its corner location also offers a wonderful tree-framed view of the multicolored Pacific Design Center . Stroll up past the sweet pink geraniums on Westmount Dr, cross over Holloway Dr and give your thighs a workout tackling the steep Alta Loma Rd up to the Sunset Marquis. 

Drop by the ultimate music gallery

While the Sunset Marquis is iconic enough as it is, just to the right of the lobby is the Morrison Hotel Gallery , where a collection of the greatest rock and pop culture photography adorns the walls. Mötley Crüe in a soapy jacuzzi, the Rolling Stones dressed in drag, the Doors gazing through the window of the Morrison Hotel…the shots on display here are as cool as the hotel. And you’ll find even more images in the underpass between the pool and Cavatina restaurant. Just remember to keep it cool if Ringo Starr walks by. 

The walk: Head back up to Sunset and turn left (no more hills now, I promise). Mel’s Drive-In on the north side is one of LA’s last old-school diners (one that stays open 24/7 if you’re feeling peckish in the wee hours). Stroll down to the bizarre Rocky and Bullwinkle statue at the intersection of Sunset and Holloway, where the smell of cigar smoke might drift over from State Social House . Brunch hotspot Dialog Cafe is a five-star people-watching spot – so maybe take a coffee break here, before crossing Palm Ave toward Book Soup.

Dive into book heaven

Here since 1987, Book Soup smells like freshly printed pages; inside, you could easily lose yourself for an hour or two. The special section with books about and set in Los Angeles is particularly engrossing, while the fine selection of pop culture, architecture and LGBTIQ+ works is very on-brand for WeHo. Occupying a small cottage next door, hidden neighbor Mystery Pier deals only in first editions. Some of the astonishing titles on offer here include an 1816 printing of Jane Austen’s Emma and a copy of Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms from 1929.

The walk: The next two to three blocks heading west showcase some of the Sunset Strip’s most famous (and infamous) venues. So as the sun’s golden glow flares over Beverly Hills and day turns to evening, it’s really a case of picking your poison. Things kick off across Larrabee St, at Johnny Depp’s Viper Room , and stretch up past the neon-red Roxy to Lemmy’s famous old haunt The Rainbow .

Catch a live gig at a legendary venue

When the Doors were once the house band, you know the venue is worth a visit. Opened in 1964, the Whisky a Go Go was the first live music venue inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and its intimate stage still hosts gigs almost every night. There are a few leather booths with tables, though they’re often reserved – and anyway, the Whisky (as locals call it) is best experienced by grabbing a cold beer from the back bar and getting up close to the action. 

The walk: If you’re seeing the night out here or at one of Sunset’s other music venues, I don’t blame you; they’re all a blast. But if you want to end your evening on a lighter note, head back east on Sunset to The Comedy Store.

Bonus stop: Kick back with some late-night laughs

The laughs last late into the night at the legendary Comedy Store . Everyone from Jerry Seinfeld to Richard Pryor has taken the mic here, and with three rooms to choose from, there’s plenty of choice if you’re booking last-minute. The Original Room’s “After 11pm Headliners” spot is the best show to see if you’re coming for some late-night yuks. A good tip is to check their Instagram page on the day, as secret headliners are often revealed there.

Take a trip back to South Park Mall with Twin Blends

Margaret John remembers the carousal that use to be at South Park Mall. It stood 25 feet tall, was hand painted by Italian artists, contained real horsehair in the tails and was a replica of a German one designed by Phillip Scheider in 1898.

Her son, Marshall John, loved it and would beg her for just one more ride, “After the 3rd time, I was dizzy and about fell off,” she jokingly recalls.

It’s just one of the countless stories that South Park Mall’s walls would tell - if they could talk.

“When South Park opened in 1974 with 75 stores, it was the largest center between Dallas and Jackson, and the Shreveport economy was booming,” said Jerry Sheehan in a blog post on Deadmalls.com.

Mike Mangham of Twin Blends recalls going there with his twin brother, Mark Mangham, “Being teenage boys, it was the place to go to play video games at the Land of Oz, watch great movies, look for records at Musicland, and best of all, it was a great place to see girls!”

In the late1980’s, arguably the height of the shopping mall’s popularity, Mark worked at United Jewelers and, then later, at the Pro Athlete, owned by NFL football player Pat Tilley.

Photos researched by Twin Blends, from Northwest Louisiana Archives at LSUS, show the hustle and bustle that would come to define the American retail experience of that era. The Tiffany’s jewelry shop offered luxuries as the Walgreens had more practical items.

The staple stores included JC Penny, Selber Bros., Palais Royal, Dillard’s and Montgomery Ward’s. 

Christmas was celebrated with ‘Santa’s Train’ that kids would ride round and round in a circle that contained a winter scene with trees and snow.

Cinema 12 had its premier opening with the showing of Walt Disney’s Bambi.

It was bright and it was modern but, through the years that would change, like everything does.

By the late 1990’s, there was talk of gang activity. The Times, which once reported the goings-ons, began to report crime, like when a teenager was shot in the head in the mall parking lot in 1999.

It also marked the decline of Shreveport’s economic boom as the oil industry began to wane and factories began to close, so did the shops inside the mall. 

Today it is Summer Grove Baptist Church. Something that Sheehan said his wife learned about long before it became a reality.

“My wife was South Park's horticulturist in the 70's and early 80's, and she told me about one of the mall walkers: 'the crazy lady' Miss Dorothy,” wrote Sheehan, “One day Miss Dorothy came and told my wife that Jesus had sent her a Vision!  South Park Mall was going to become a church for Jesus! Of course, we just laughed it off. But she was right.”

Summer Grove has occupied a section of the mall since 2003. “This building is still making a difference in our community,” said Lori Bennett, administrative assistant of Summer Grove Baptist Church.

The church offers several worship services, including a Hispanic one, Bible study classes, a counseling center, a thrift store and much more.

While a part of it has been renovated, much of the mall remains as it originally did, except vacant. Only a few remaining reminders of its heyday.

In 2020 Mark and Mike Mangham toured the building with Mark and Barry Walker and saw where the old stores used to be. “It was magical,” said Mike.

Memories returned as they photographed and videoed the experience, “We want everyone to experience that!”

On Saturday, June 8, people will have that opportunity. Twin Blends has teamed up with Summer Grove to offer a unique experience. Walk with the twins through the mall and remember for yourself, then watch the Twin Blends, South Park Mall- A Look Back video, in the old Regal Cinema.

The concession stand will open once again, “You will really be able to step back in time as you sit and watch the video eating popcorn and drinking your Coke!” said Mike.

La cuna de mangas y animes célebres como "Dragon Ball" o "One Piece", y de exitosos videojuegos como "Super Mario" y "Final Fantasy", considera su producción creativa como un motor de crecimiento a la par de las industrias de acero o semiconductores .

The Honourable Bill Blair, Minister of National Defence, concluded a visit to Singapore where he led Canada’s delegation to the Shangri-La Dialogue from May 31 to June 2. Minister Blair was joined by the Chief of the Defence Staff, General Wayne Eyre, and senior National Defence officials.

During his visit, Minister Blair announced the deployment of three Royal Canadian Navy vessels to Exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC), where Canadian sailors will operate alongside Indo-Pacific allies and partners. This year, the maritime component of the exercise will be led by a Canadian commodore – demonstrating Canada’s commitment to leadership as we engage with Indo-Pacific partners. Following RIMPAC, HMCS Vancouver will continue on to a deployment in the Indo-Pacific through Operation HORIZON, Canada’s revamped Indo-Pacific military mission. Thanks to Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, Canada is now deploying three frigates per year to the region for the second year in a row. 

The Minister also announced that Canada has joined the Multilateral Initiative for Defence Industrial Base Resilience in the Indo-Pacific, launched at the Shangri-La Dialogue by Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III. This important initiative will ensure that Canada and its partners in the Indo-Pacific can develop a resilient defence industrial base ready with the necessary technological footings to face potential challenges in the region.

Minister Blair made these announcements in his remarks to the Shangri-La Dialogue’s sixth plenary session.

Over the course of the Dialogue, the Minister also highlighted Canada’s recently released defence policy update, Our North, Strong and Free (ONSAF). The new policy boosts Canada’s investments in our military so that it has the tools and training required to operate in Canada and around the world — including in the Indo-Pacific. Backed by $8.1 billion over five years and $73 billion over twenty years in additional defence spending, ONSAF strengthens Canada’s ability to implement the defence initiatives in its Indo-Pacific Strategy (IPS).

During his visit to Singapore, Minister Blair met with: 

• Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, Richard Marles. Minister Blair and Deputy Prime Minister Marles discussed their recently released defence policies and strategies, and how Canada and Australia share a similar outlook on the strategic environment in the Indo-Pacific region. They also discussed the high level of defence collaboration between Canada and Australia in the region, including through the Five Eyes community, and how Canada and Australia can continue to advance this partnership by coordinating their military operations and regional exercises, defence materiel cooperation, and collaboration on advanced capabilities development.
• China’s Minister of National Defence, Dong Jun. Minister Blair stated Canada’s belief that open lines of communication between our countries, and particularly between our defence establishments, are essential. This meeting was an important step in that regard. During the meeting, Minister Blair reiterated the importance of responsible state behaviour in accordance with international law. Minister Blair expressed Canada’s concern regarding PRC’s foreign interference. Minister Blair further highlighted Canada’s concern about recent Chinese military exercises around Taiwan, as well as China’s ongoing and growing economic and financial support to Russia. Minister Blair reiterated that communication between both countries is vital – and welcomed future opportunities for continued dialogue.    
• Japan’s Minister of Defense, Kihara Minoru. The Ministers discussed their countries’ strong bilateral defence partnership, the Women, Peace and Security agenda, and their intent to maintain momentum on strategic defence dialogue and bilateral defence cooperation. Minister Blair highlighted how the investments in Canada’s new defence policy, ONSAF, will support its contributions to the Indo-Pacific region. Minister Blair also thanked his Japanese counterpart for hosting Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) aircraft monitoring the implementation of sanctions against North Korea under Operation NEON.
• Republic of Korea Defence Minister Shin Won-sik. The Ministers discussed their growing bilateral defence partnership and Minister Blair highlighted how the investments in Canada’s new defence policy, ONSAF, will support Canada’s contributions to the Indo-Pacific region. Minister Blair noted Canada’s historic and ongoing contributions to Korean security, and reaffirmed Canada’s commitment through ongoing sanctions monitoring activities under Operation NEON, and contributions to the United Nations Command (UNC), including through the leadership of the current Canadian Deputy Commander of the UNC in the Republic of Korea.
• Malaysia’s Minister of Defence, Khaled Nordin. Minister Blair reiterated Canada’s commitment to their countries’ dynamic defence relationship and highlighted how Canada’s new defence policy, ONSAF, bolsters Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy commitments. Both Ministers discussed existing and future areas of bilateral and multilateral cooperation, including through ASEAN.
• New Zealand’s Minister of Defence, Judith Collins. The Ministers discussed the importance of security cooperation between Canada and New Zealand as Five Eyes partners with shared values and extensive defence ties. Minister Blair reiterated how the commitments in Canada’s new defence policy, ONSAF, support Canada’s readiness to deliver on its Indo-Pacific Strategy. The Ministers explored future opportunities for defence collaboration in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
• The Philippines’ Secretary of Defense, Gilberto Teodoro. Minister Blair recognized that 2024 marks 75 years of Canada-Philippines diplomatic ties, and reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to growing bilateral defence relations. The Minister and Secretary discussed the defence cooperation activities outlined in the Defence Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding signed in January 2024 and the implementation of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy. 
• Singapore’s Minister for Defence, Dr Ng Eng Hen. Minister Blair thanked his counterpart for once again hosting the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. The Ministers discussed the implementation of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, as well as the progress made on the Defence Cooperation Arrangement signed by the two countries, which enables increased opportunities for interaction and partnership between the two countries’ armed forces.

During his trip to Singapore, Minister Blair engaged with young leaders from diplomatic, military, academic and civil society backgrounds at the International Institute for Strategic Studies’ Southeast Asia Young Leaders Programme roundtable.

Minister Blair also attended the Cohen Group’s policy breakfast, hosted by General Mike Scaparrotti, former North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Supreme Allied Commander. During the breakfast, defence leaders discussed the current security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region and how allies and partners can work toward common goals.

The Shangri-La Dialogue is a cornerstone event of Canada’s defence diplomacy in the region. The event brings together delegates from more than 50 countries to discuss regional security challenges and engage in important bilateral discussions with Indo-Pacific counterparts. As a Pacific nation, the security and stability of the broader Indo-Pacific region is vital in shaping Canada’s future and prosperity.

This was Minister Blair’s first official trip to the Indo-Pacific region as Minister of National Defence. The Canadian Minister of National Defence has attended the Shangri-La Dialogue every year since 2017.

Through Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, we are significantly boosting our military presence in the Indo-Pacific — including by deploying three frigates per year to the region for the second year in a row. Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy is a comprehensive and integrated framework for increased Canadian engagement across the Indo-Pacific region. Canada will continue to work with allies and partners in the region to promote a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.  

Through the strategy, Canada has increased its engagement, cooperation, and collaboration in the region to promote global peace and stability. As it continues to implement the Strategy, Canada’s focus includes persistent deployment in the region, increased participation in exercises and activities, tailored training, and cyber defence cooperation with regional partners. 

Canada military operations in the region include Operations (Op) NEON and HORIZON. We also participate in international exercises, such as Exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) and collaborate with partners through Canada’s Military Training and Cooperation Program.

Op HORIZON is the Canadian Armed Force’s mission to implement the defence elements of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy by increasing Canada’s military presence in the region, allowing for more engagement, cooperation, and collaboration. 

In April 2024, HMCS Montréal set sail for the Indo-Pacific region under Op Horizon. It is the first of three Halifax class frigates that are annually deploying to the region under Op HORIZON in support of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, to uphold the rules-based international order and promote a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.

This week, HMCS Vancouver will depart for Hawaii to take part in RIMPAC 2024 before proceeding to Op HORIZON in the Indo-Pacific region. HMCS Vancouver will also participate in Op NEON in the coming months.
