The Hidden Secrets of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

animal kingdom safari lodge

Step into the heart of Africa and become immersed in cultural experiences from the second you arrive through the welcome gates at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. Observe exotic animals, dine at award winning restaurants and take part in roaring excitement day and night. If you and your travel party are dreaming of a unique resort stay that will give you memories that will last a lifetime, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge (DAKL) will surely be your home away from home.

Arriving at Jambo House, the main building for guests who are not Disney Vacation Club members, sets the tone for your stay as soon as you walk in. Guests step from the outside world of cars and busses into the beauty and wonder that is the culture of Africa. There are large art displays and numerous cultural artifacts in the lobby. DAKL is home to the largest collection of African art in the world outside the continent of Africa. Cultural Ambassadors also roam the lobby and savanna area, answering questions and educating guests of the wonders, artifacts and wildlife around them.

The Six Resort Split Stay - Animal Kingdom Villas Jambo House - DVC Fan

DAKL has three separate savannas named: Sunset, Arusha, and Uzima. Each savanna has its own unique look and specializes in specific species. For example, ostriches can only be found on the Sunset savanna, zebras are only located on the Arusha savanna, and kudu are only found on the Uzima savanna. But the guest favorite giraffes are found on all three savannas! Each room at the resort has an animal viewing guide that describes what the species look like so they can be easily identified. At night, the savannas are illuminated and guests can visit one of the lookouts off the lobby to use night vision goggles to see the animals.

The Starlight Safari allows guests to witness the wild as it comes to life on an after-dark safari tour. Climb aboard a sturdy, open-sided safari vehicle, and feel the rush of night air as you rumble through lush scenery, scanning the horizon for over 30 species of African wildlife! Starlight Safari is approximately one hour, and a portion of the $74.17 cost per person is donated to Disney’s Global Conservation efforts.

Night Safari | Animal Kingdom Lodge | Walt Disney World Resort

Recreational activities themed to the resort is where DAKL stands out from other properties at Walt Disney World.Throughout the day, guests will spot woodcarvers crafting African pieces and educational group activities, such as learning the language of the Djembe (African drum). Families can get cozy by the fire pit on the Arusha savanna and roast marshmallows under the stars. Another popular activity is the Wild About Painting experience where guests can create their very own masterpiece and sip a complimentary drink while overlooking the savanna.

Starlight Safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

Have you ever wanted to explore a safari at night? YOU CAN!

During a recent trip to Walt Disney World, I ( Shannon ) was able to experience the Starlight Safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge — and what a truly unique experience it was!

animal kingdom safari lodge

Starlight Safari: The Experience

After checking in for our 8:30pm safari, we were greeted by our guide, Chelsea. She explained what we would see on our hour-long tour, and then we headed out to our safari vehicle!

animal kingdom safari lodge

We met our driver, Meredith, before loading into the open-air truck. It was a bit chilly this night, but blankets are provided for everyone which was a very nice touch.  Also, each participant received a night-vision device to use (the device is for one eye, not a full set of binoculars).

Once we were advised of the safety rules and what to expect during the tour, we were off!

animal kingdom safari lodge

Over 30 species of animals call the Animal Kingdom Lodge savannas home. During our drive around the savannas (at both Kidani Village and Jambo House) we saw giraffe, Ankole cattle, zebras, and springbok — just to name a few!

Chelsea was very knowledgeable in telling us about the animals and their lives at the Lodge, and answering questions from the group.

It took some practice, but I even managed to use the night-vision device with my phone camera to get a few cool pics!

Ultimate Guide to Animal Kingdom Lodge Activities for Families

S taying at Animal Kindom Lodge (AKL) and participating in the many Animal Kingdom Lodge Activities creates an entirely different type of Walt Disney World resort vacation. Think of Animal Kingdom Lodge as more than just a hotel. It’s like waking up in an African safari every morning. With wild animals right outside your window and the whole place buzzing with the vibe of African culture, it’s a total game-changer for family trips.

My kids love the Animal Kingdom Lodge resort. If you ask them their favorite place to stay when we visit Disney World , both of them will say without hesitation, Animal Kingdom Lodge. Yes, we love the other Walt Disney World resorts like Riviera Resort for its easy skyliner access, and the monorail resorts for their proximity to the Magic Kingdom, but when we stay at AKL, it’s not just a place to crash, it’s a whole experience. It’s got everything from rooms with views of zebras and giraffes to awesome activities that aren’t just fun but also super educational.

If you ever get the chance to stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge, I want you to get the best out of it, just like we do. Whether it’s your first visit or you’re practically part of the furniture like us, I’ve got some insider tips and personal stories to share. After years of trips staying there, I know all the secrets to making your Disney World vacation at Animal Kingdom Lodge even more special.

Book your stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge HERE!

Animal Kingdom Lodge Activities Overview

Wildlife activities.

A big part of what makes Animal Kingdom Lodge so special is the animals that live there. Outside of both properties (Jambo House and Kidani Village) are large viewing areas with animals such as giraffes, zebras, and ostriches roaming the grounds. It’s not unusual to wake up in the morning, look out your balcony, and see a few giraffes enjoying breakfast just below your room.

The resort takes advantage of this with plenty of ways to learn about and view the animals living on the property. A few favorites include:

1. Animal Spotting

The resort has several areas perfect for spotting animals and they provide helpful guides to help you learn a little bit more (and identify ) about what you see. If you are lucky enough to have a Savannah view room, you can also spot the animals from your balcony.

I love waking up in the morning, making a cup of coffee ( Joffrey’s of course ), and watching the animals while I sit and wait for everyone else to get ready for the day. It’s both relaxing and entertaining, and it never gets old!

2. Animal Programs

When my kids were younger, this was their favorite part of their stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge. We would make sure we had at least one resort day just so they could participate in the activities.

The programs may vary a bit, but include things like learning about the Flamingos that live on the property, Animal Enrichment – they’d help prepare food to feed the animals, Animal Tracking, and even spotting the animals at night using night vision goggles.

The best part of these activities is that they are FREE! The value of all the Animal Kingdom Lodge activities is really mind-boggling to me. Your kids can easily have a fun stay without ever setting foot in a park (I know mine have!) .

Cultural Activities

One of the things that differentiate Animal Kingdom Lodge from the rest of the Disney Deluxe resorts and their resort activities are the many cultural activities and cultural representatives. They really make a stay at AKL unique and super special.

3. African Drumming

Every afternoon you’ll start to hear the drums in the Jambo House lobby – that’s when you know the African drumming session is happening. A cultural guide will gather up anyone interested and let you have the opportunity to make some music (noise ) with the drums. It’s actually a lot of fun and we always participate if we are free. The kids got such a kick out of the drums that we purchased a pair as a souvenir years ago and every once in a while I hear the drums beating at home and think of Disney!

4. Culinary Tours

If you like good food and food tours (and my family sure does) , you’ll want to make a point to sign up for one of the restaurant tours. They are typically once a week, scheduled for times when the restaurants aren’t open (or at least not busy). There is one in Jambo House that takes you through the buffet, Boma, and the fine-dining restaurant Jiko. The other tour is of Sanaa (our all-time favorite Disney restaurant) in Kidani Village.

Both tours will walk you through what the restaurants have to offer, what makes them special and unique, and share some of the Disney touches. In Sanaa, the tour guide points out some of the special art which is quite interesting. At the end of the tours you’ll get to try a few dishes – I believe in Boma we tried a soup and a zebra dome, and at both Jiko and Sanaa we got to try a sample of the bread service.

These tours are free of charge and well worth your time, but you will want to sign up ahead of time as they have been known to fill up. It’s a fun way to learn something as well as try something new while you are on vacation.

5. Animal Kingdom Art Tour

Another fun ( and free ) activity is to take a tour of the Jambo House Lobby ( and there is also one of Kidani Village) . The guide will walk you through the gorgeous lobby and point out some of the special details along with describing the art that you’ll see, and why it was chosen for the resort. You’ll probably also get a chance to find a few hidden Mickey’s!

Recreational Activities at Animal Kingdom Lodge

If you just want to have a little fun at Animal Kingdom Lodge there are plenty of opportunities.

6. Simba’s Playhouse

All of the Deluxe Disney resorts have a clubhouse for the kiddos and it’s a fun place to sign up for art projects, play games, or just hang out if it’s a rainy day. Animal Kingdom Lodge’s clubhouse is called Simba’s Playhouse.

If we are spending a day enjoying the resort ( instead of heading into the parks ) we’ll usually stop in and see what crafts are available. This is also a fun thing to do on a check-in or check-out day. We’ve painted and colored pictures, made necklaces, and even painted our own jewelry boxes in the past. There are always a few choices, some paid and some free, so definitely check it out.

8. Nightly campfire fun

Our favorite Disney resort ( Vero Beach ) has a really engaging campfire with songs and s’mores, so although the nightly campfires at Animal Kingdom Lodge don’t quite compare ( and yes, we’ve tried to unsuccessfully start songs before ), it is still fun to check them out. Both Kidani Village and Jambo have one, and they will pass out free marshmallows to roast. I believe you can purchase a s’mores kit, but you could also just bring your own.

10. Enjoy the poolside fun

One of the things that Disney resorts do incredibly well is engage the kids while they are at the pool. We have participated in numerous poolside parties and they are always a blast. From hula-hoop contests ( my kids ended up tying the last time we were at AKL ), to bingo or trivia, there is fun to be had by all.

And even if you don’t want to participate, you can still enjoy the music and atmosphere while you relax by the pool ( or careen down the waterslide!) . Just grab an activities schedule when you check in to see when and what is being offered during your stay.

11. Cookie or cake decorating

This is a tasty activity that you can participate in if you happen to be around when it’s happening. More than once this is an activity that we just happened upon versus one we planned for. The cast member will give you a cookie and some icing and toppings and you can decorate your own cookie or cake. Then you get to take it home!

We always have fun seeing how creative we can be, and it’s a delicious snack late at night after a full park day. You will see this on the activities schedule, so look for it, or you might just stumble upon it like we did.

12. Watch an evening movie under the stars

All of the Deluxe Disney resorts have some sort of outdoor movie shown nightly (weather allowing), and so Animal Kingdom Lodge is no exception. Honestly, we rarely watch them anymore, just because the kids are older and prefer to be out and about at night, but when they were younger, we’d often end a fun Disney day at the park or the resort with a Disney movie.

Special Events at Animal Kingdom Lodge

There are plenty of special events happening at Animal Kingdom Lodge throughout the year.

13. Gingerbread sculptures and Christmas trees

During the Christmas holiday season, Animal Kingdom Lodge puts up an enormous Christmas Tree in the Jambo House lobby. It is completely decorated with a bit of a “Disney-African” theme and is quite stunning.

The resort also comes up with a gingerbread display ( along with the rest of the Deluxe resorts) which is always incredible. We’ve seen several years of displays that were almost full-sized animals made out of gingerbread. They also sell hot chocolate ( with or without a kick) and gingerbread goodies in the lobby during the Christmas season .

14. Special holiday events

For most of the larger US holidays, Animal Kingdom Lodge will do a little something special. Whether it’s a holiday-related craft or special decoration, definitely ask at the front desk or check the activity guide to see what’s happening when you visit around the holidays.

AKL Activities Planning Tips

When it comes to diving into the activities at Animal Kingdom Lodge, a little planning goes a long way. First things first – prioritize. Check out the activity list ahead of time and pick what resonates most with your family’s interests and the ages of your kids. Got little adventurers? They might love the pool parties or animal encounters. Older kids or teens might be into cultural experiences or nighttime wildlife viewing.

Time management is key too. You’ll want to balance your park time with lodge activities without feeling rushed. Some activities are extra magical at certain times. For instance, early morning is great for animal watching when they’re most active. Evenings can be perfect for watching movies or just star gazing. By aligning activities with the best times, you’ll ensure each moment at the lodge is as enjoyable as it can be.

Why Animal Kingdom Lodge?

The unique atmosphere of Animal Kingdom Lodge is something out of an African dream. Imagine waking up to the sight of giraffes and zebras roaming just beyond your balcony. The lodge’s design, inspired by African kraals, offers panoramic views of four lush savannas, home to over 200 animals and birds. It’s like having a piece of the African safari in Orlando!

Animal Kingdom Lodge Dining Options

There are plenty of choices for dining at Animal Kingdom Lodge. From the upscale Jiko to the expansive Boma buffet there is something for everyone. My absolute favorite Disney restaurant, Sanaa is located at Kidani Village. If you get a chance to eat there, do it – and order the bread service and a Painted Lemur. Yum! There is even a super cool bar overlooking Boma (Victoria Falls Lounge) – a great spot for a cocktail and appetizer.

Finally, you can also enjoy a quick service meal at Mara, or even grab snacks from the two gift shops (including zebra domes). We like to get a package of zebra domes and take them along with a cup of coffee over to the balcony overlooking the savanna for a wonderful little snack.

By Shelby Smith 1 Comment

As part of Disney World’s phased reopening, experiences are slowly returning to the parks and hotels (but some still haven’t quite yet!) .

animal kingdom safari lodge

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

You can once again hug your favorite Disney characters, dine at fan-favorite restaurants, and enjoy a FULL parade in Magic Kingdom. But, if you want to take your park visit to the next level you might be considering one of Disney World’s behind-the-scenes tours . Many of these remain suspended to this date , BUT, one of our FAVORITE tours is FINALLY back and we’re taking you along with us!

The Starlight Safari has returned to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and we couldn’t wait to head back out to the savanna and see if it was still worth the cost!

As a quick refresher, the Starlight Safari currently costs $89 per person and takes place two times each night with one tour at 8:30PM and another at 10PM . Disney recommends arriving at least 15 minutes before your tour, so we arrived a bit in advance at the porte-cochere in Animal Kingdom Lodge — Kidani Village to check in. Note that a valid photo ID is required and guests must be at least 8 years old participate.

It’s almost time!

Once everyone had arrived, it was time to load up into the safari vehicle! Before we hopped in, there was a short ribbon-cutting ceremony where the first guest that had checked in for the tour got to do the honors. Cast Members were equally excited to be giving tours once again!

Now, what makes this tour so unique is that you get to see the animals at NIGHT when many of them are more active. And, there’s no need to worry about being able to see all the nighttime activities because Disney provides night-vision devices so you can see the animals in the dark. We were given ours once we boarded the truck.

animal kingdom safari lodge

Got our night vision goggles!

Our guide for the safari was Noah, with Emily as our driver. Both are actually what Disney called “Interpretive Keepers,” which means they work directly with the animals AND lead tours — a.k.a. they’re the experts.

Our guide, Noah

Once our safari vehicle set off, it was time for an adventure!

animal kingdom safari lodge

The safari begins!

We were lucky enough to see a TON of animals, including zebras, antelopes, giraffes, and more! As we mentioned before, the animals tend to be more active at night, so you’ll see some enjoying their dinner, roaming the field, and whatever else animals are up to after sunset.

animal kingdom safari lodge

And, while our cameras did a great job at making it look like there was still some light out when we were touring, it was actually totally dark — making us all that much more thankful for our night vision goggles.

animal kingdom safari lodge

Hello, Giraffe!

Now, you can see the animals with night vision goggles at night at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge without paying for the tour . But, what makes this tour so unique (and worth the cost in our opinion) is that you get to see the animals at night up-close PLUS you’ve got a Cast Member who is dedicated to teaching you all about them!

animal kingdom safari lodge

SO many animals to see!

Our tour guide, Noah, was SO knowledgeable, but at the same time, he was also hilarious — he made everything he told us sound so interesting as he spoke about each animal and how Disney takes care of them.

animal kingdom safari lodge

Our tour guide knew EVERYTHING about these animals!

Our tour lasted just a little under an hour (though Disney suggests carving out about an hour and a half for this experience) and we were SO happy to have had the chance to come back! It’s important to keep in mind that this behind-the-scenes tour does entail riding in a rugged safari vehicle over an open savanna (and it gets BUMPY), but if you’re looking for something unique to add to your Disney World vacation, this is a great, affordable option. Plus, you could easily make an event out of the evening for you and your family by spending time at Animal Kingdom Lodge, having a nice dinner at Boma , Sanaa , or even Jiko , and then following it up with the tour.

So, if you’re thinking about giving it a try, reservations can be made online on the Disney World website, or through the My Disney Experience app . And, as always, make sure to keep reading DFB for more reviews — and news — from Disney World!

Post-meta.php, guide to the animals of animal kingdom lodge.

By Kristen H

December 12, 2010

animal kingdom safari lodge

We can all agree that one of the best things about staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge is viewing the animals that roam the savannas. But can you identify these animals, and what do you know about them?

The Reticulated Giraffe and the Zebra are arguably the most popular and easy-to-spot animals on the AKL savannas. But there are several other mammals roaming around, too.

You’ll probably spot the Ankole Cattle munching and roaming — they’re much like American cattle, but with HUGE horns. And you’ll be able to discern the Red River Hog — the same species as Pumba in The Lion King. Thomson’s Gazelle are small and fast — closer to the size of deer.

All the other mammals on the savanna are a type of antelope. There’s the largest White-Bearded Wildebeest and Eland species; the large Roan Antelope , Greater Kudu and Waterbuck species; and the medium-sized Blesbok , Impala and Nyala species. Use the Wildlife Field Guide , available at the front desk, to identify each type of antelope.

The pink Greater Flamingo , Ostrich and Ruppel’s Griffon Vulture are easy to detect for most children. But what about Guineafowl , the African Spoonbill , East African Crowned Crane , Marabou Stork , and Eastern White Pelican ?

An illustrated guide is available at the AKL front desk to aid you in identifying all the animals at AKL. Be sure to pick one up, and see an example over on our printed materials page .

Giraffes at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge

Can we park at Animal Kingdom Lodge when we are visiting BOMA and then take the bus to Animal Kingdom? First time visitors to BOMA. ”

  • At Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge , you'll be required to pass by a security booth at the entrance to the property, where the Cast Members there may request your information to confirm whether you have a valid dining reservation. At the current time, standard self-parking is still complimentary for guests arriving to dine at Boma and perhaps check out this incredibly-themed  Disney Resort Hotel and its stunning savanna viewing areas before or after your meal.
  • Walt Disney World Resort Parking and Security Cast Members have been observed to be increasingly strict in deterring guests looking to leave their vehicles at the Disney Resort Hotels in order to gain access to the theme parks without paying for parking, which also puts a strain on available spaces for the folks and families who are actually staying at these locations. Though policies may be subject to change without prior notice, many dining guests in recent years have been subject to a three-hour parking limitation at select resorts which can be imposed at any time - but notably during the busiest times of the year.
  • If you're spending your day at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park , some families choose to park there instead and take advantage of the complimentary bus transportation to get to and from Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge but ultimately I recommend speaking with the Cast Members as you arrive for your reservation and letting them know what your plans are, so that they can best advise your options based on their most updated policies.

This African Safari Lodge Just Got a Luxe Makeover. Here’s a Look Inside.

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

It can take a lifetime of travel to even begin to know the hugely diverse landscapes of Africa. But if you only have an American-sized vacation, there’s no need to chase charter flight after flight to camp after camp in country after country. Africa can be taken-in in miniature, provided you know where to go: for instance, the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal.    Here, a few hours north of Durban, near the border of the landlocked micro-nation of Eswatini, you’ll find the 30-year-old Phinda Private Game Reserve —115 square miles of protected land nicknamed the Seven Worlds of Wonder. It’s a cluster of seven distinct, ultra-rare dwarf ecosystems crammed together, including woodland, grassland, wetland, and forest (as well as an unusual sand forest), plus mountain ranges, rivers, marshes, and pans. It would take a grueling cross-continental, multi-national journey to tick even half of these boxes any other way.    Better still, rare landscapes make for even rarer animals. So while the Big Five are in abundance, so are shy red duikers, diminutive suni antelopes, Tonga red squirrels, and 436 bird species.   Within Phinda, there are six camps , each targeting a different habitat within the reserve, but aim your LandRover at its Forest Lodge (from $850 per night). Within the reserve’s four-square-mile sand forest, andBeyond Phinda Forest Lodge recently emerged from its first full makeover since opening in 1994.

The refurb—which cost an unspecified sum, spent by an unspecified ownership, according to the resorts rep—has ramped up the luxury of the lodge’s Zulu Zen style and added new facilities such as an infinity pool (complete with a poolside bar), a fitness room, and a spa. The panoramic forest views and grazing nyalas are still intact.

This African Safari Takes You on a Land Adventure and a River Cruise-Here's What It Was Like

There Are Only 1,000 Mountain Gorillas in the World. This New Rwanda Lodge Lets You See Them up Close.

The lodge’s Gallery, a tranquil library and lounge, is now decorated with a cabinet of curiosities and a series of prints depicting the life of Shaka Zulu , the former ruler of the Zulu Kingdom.

“The original catchphrase was ‘Zulu Zen,’ and we wanted to keep that,” says Kerri Smithers, general manager of Phinda Forest. “But we’ve also added an ‘Afro Japanese’ touch with the low seating and Japanese-inspired doors.”

However, the design is remains very much rooted in South Africa, assures Smithers.

“The woven papyrus mats on the ceiling look Japanese but are actually made by local women and are used on flooring and to take to the beach,” she says. “The lights are inspired by traditional Zulu brooms and have also been made by local women. And as Zulus use lots of clay, we’ve added these decorative clay pots, which traditionally are passed around to drink beer out of.”

Outside, the terrace can be used to host private dinners, while a few steps away, the birds-nest-inspired fire pit is the new hot spot for pre-dinner drinks, while recounting the day’s safari adventures.

The camp’s 16 lodges now include a new larger family-friendly suite. It’s made up of two interconnecting rooms that have been refigured to maximize the space, something that Smithers says was a key part of the refurbishment since it avoided a complete rebuild that would’ve disturbed the surrounding habitat. The bedroom’s clean lines nod to Japanese minimalism. The geometric headboard is made from the same papyrus mats as the Gallery’s ceiling, juxtaposed to broom lamps and decorative hanging beadwork. Chunky wood furnishings crafted from stained iroko and touches of forest green Astrus marble bring the outside in, but what really connects you with nature are the floor-to-ceiling windows that wrap around the lodge, including one next to the luxuriously deep tub. You can continue to spot grazing nyala and curious monkeys at all hours; the team even recommend sleeping with the curtains to really feel like you’re spending the night in the forest, at one with nature.

The lodge matters, but it’s ultimately designed to be left behind on daily game drives. And in unusual surroundings such as these, it’s only natural that the Phinda team specializes in organizing a more unique safari experience. For the first time, you can now e-biking through the sand forest. For the braver still, follow on a big game tracking walk to stalk rhinos, buffalo, and elephants. A final proof that this place is all about location, location, location: Phinda can even drive you to Sodwana Bay for a beach picnic. It’s one of the most scenic routes in Africa.   If you can handle both a late night and a bleary-eyed early morning, then for three months of the year—between November and January—you can head back to the bay after dark to watch two of the ocean’s largest turtles, the leatherback and loggerhead, emerge from the ocean to lay their eggs.   What andBeyond brings to this extraordinary place is the element of surprise. A wild goose (or rather tiger) chase might end at a candle lit bush tucker dinner. You may be surprised with a sleep out under the stars—with an armed ranger, of course. You may find that, unbeknownst to you, the staff have run a hot bath in your room and chilled a bottle of Champagne. Mocha-choca-rulas—the classic safari drink of caffeine, chocolate, and booze—are served in the morning, as are G&Ts at sundown.

Still, none of this comes easily. To operate any private reserve is a frustratingly Sisyphean task. The death of one beloved game animal leads to an over-population of another. Too many elephants can  destroy a forest; too few can leave it overgrown. But rather than toil in silence, andBeyond allows guests to become a part of their delicate conservation work.    In fact, many of the camp’s most exclusive adventures allow a limited number of guests the once-in-a-lifetime experience of getting hands on.   Help by notching the ears of rhino, or dehorning one to deter poachers. You can also assist in changing the collars on elephants or witness the release of animals, such as cheetahs and lions. If you’re more into pangolins then predators, then andBeyond will take you out to play hide-and-seek with the elusive animals, which have been successfully reintroduced to the region. And, oh what a region it is.
