Join the Journey

Join The Journey (JTJ) is a realistic daily Bible-reading plan from Watermark Community Church that (at least in 2023) takes the reader from Genesis to Jesus.

  • Five days a week
  • Extensive devotional support including podcasts and printed journals for adults and children.

My Thoughts #

  • As described in the introduction of the Join the Journey Vol. 1 journal, this Join The Journey started in 2005. The lessons learned from nearly 20 years of experience shines through the thoughtfulness of the plan and supporting resources.
  • Like other plans , I appreciate the weekday rhythm as well as the acknowledgment of the church calendar with unique readings for Holy Week and Advent. (This looks to be a new addition for 2023.)
  • In addition, the devotional resources appear to be rich and artfully done.
  • While the 2022 plan covered the New Testament, the 2023 the plan covers the Old Testament. Although this is a helpful balance to 2022’s focus, not reading any New Testament until Advent feels like a gap.
  • Ten Minute Bible Talks Bible Reading Plans
  • 5 Day Bible Narratives

Best devotional.

I’ve been doing JTJ for the past four years and have loved every bit of it! The first year I did it we walked through the whole bible in a year, the next year was the gospels, last year was Psalms/Proverbs & this year is the book of Romans.! Each day you’ll read a passage, have a central truth, a devotional written by a member of Watermark, and discussion questions. Before doing JTJ, I was not in the word on a daily basis and honestly didn’t understand what I was reading. Now I love the word, and understand it! So thankful for this app & Watermark!

Excellent Resource!

If you’re looking for supplemental info, a companion app or motivation and encouragement to start walking through the Bible, look no further. This app along with the JTJ podcast have been excellent resources providing nothing but scripturally sound teaching. I really enjoy hearing from the WM members they have do the devotionals as well as some of the elders occasionally 👌

Great content. Minor bugs.

The content on this app is great. The layout looks great and I enjoy using it. I love it. Recently my wife and I both started experiencing issues where the devotional will stop loading new entries despite closing and restarting the app. Deleting and re-installing the app worked to refresh the entries to the latest. Wish this bug will be addressed, but other then that, I recommend this to anyone looking to spend intentional time with the Lord daily.

Suffering is designed by the enemy to destroy our faith, but God’s design for suffering is to strengthen our faith. So how do we have this perspective of suffering? In today’s podcast, Emma Dotter is joined by a faithful Watermark Member George Dalton to unpack this question. George leaves us with this thought, “I welcome the scalpel of the Spirit to continue to cut away the ugly dross in my heart so I can see God and be a...

In Job 29, Job is looking back and remembering his life before all these hard things happened. Sometimes, this is something that we can also do. However, something we see throughout Scripture is that suffering and hardships are what lead to intimate friendship with God. Emma Dotter and faithful Watermark Member Emily Hill unpack these truths and more in today’s Join the Journey Podcast.    Additional Scripture in thi...

S3:074 Job 28

The whole Old Testament is pointing to Jesus where salvation is found, but how does Job connect? On today’s podcast episode, Watermark Institute Fellow Hannah Staubs interviews Noah Roby to talk all things Job 28.     Additional Scripture used in today’s podcast:  James 1:5-8 - Ask God for Wisdom  Proverbs 1:7 - The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge  John 1 - Jesus as the Word    For more ...

S3:073 Job 27

How can I fight the enemy with my actions? A common question for Christians, with many different answers. Emma Dotter interviews Lucas Esteves as he gives the listeners what may feel like a simple answer, but if you are willing to truly apply this practice, it can be radical. Lucas says we are simply to “Praise the Lord.” By using additional Scriptures throughout the Bible, Lucas articulates the example of Jesus in praisin...

S3:072 Job 26

In Job 26, Job stops the narrative of explaining his actions and instead he to points the lens on the unsearchable majesty of God. While discussing God’s majesty, Emma Dotter & Mallorie Bradlou explain the ministry of presence to friends who are hurting.     Want to hear more of Mallorie’s story? How do I have peace when I feel far from God? All of us have a desire to have the answer to this question not only for ourselves, but also to help others. Emma Dotter connects the moon, man, and maggots to how God’s faithful character can give peace in the hardest trials.     Additional Scripture in the Podcast:  Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”  Gen. 3, Evidence of humanit...

S3:070 Job 24

Job is asking the exact questions that we may be feeling as we read. Emma Dotter interviews Ben Krejci, a Watermark member and consistent friend of the podcast. Ben articulates two common problems believers can have when trials come: we have a hesitancy to ask God questions, and we have a hesitancy to be frustrated. Job gives us an example of how to disagree with God.  Yes you can ask questions, and yes you can be frustrat...

As we continue to read through Job, we see that Job’s friends give bad advice. But what do we do when we are the “Job” and we get bad advice? How do we know if it is good or bad? Today, Emma Dotter is joined by Hannah Staubs, as they unpack the bad advice of Eliphaz and how to discern good advice.     Additional Scripture Used in this Podcast:   James 1:5-6, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God…”  Jerem...

S3:067 Job 21

Why do the wicked prosper? Today, Emma Dotter is joined by faithful Watermark member Casey Uphues to talk through Job 21. When bad things happen, it is easy to wonder why God allows suffering when it seems like everyone else’s life is perfect. God is kind and patient with us as we wrestle through hard questions. Ultimately, God has conquered death and evil through the death and resurrection of His Son Jesus Christ.

S3:066 Job 20

If I am suffering does that mean I am wicked? Today, Hannah Staubs is joined by fellow Watermark Institute student, Patrick Camp, to talk through Job 20. Patrick explains that our suffering is not always a direct result of our sin, because our sin is paid for either in hell or on the cross. If we are in Christ, our sin has been paid for by Jesus on the cross, and there is no condemnation left for us.    SCRIPTURE:

S3:065 Job 19

In Job 19, Job is responding to the second round of bad advice from Bildad, but he says a very powerful phrase, “I know my Redeemer lives.” Today, Hannah Staubs is joined by fellow Watermark Institute Student, Cassidy Porter. Cassidy shares not only how she has walked through personal suffering, but how vulnerably coming to the Lord and trusting his constant character has seen her through.    Additional Scripture in ...

We don’t just celebrate on Easter the work of Jesus, which we do. But we also celebrate the future hope that we have in the future coming of Jesus. It is so important to believe and understand that we will be delivered from ultimate death: separation from God. Whatever type of listener you are, we need Christ’s death for our sins, and we get the opportunity to follow him, if we want to!     Want to hear Hank’s Story?...

What does a bronze serpent on a stick have to do with Holy Week and Jesus? Sometimes in Christianity, we need symbols or symbolism to help us remember things in our faith. Emma Dotter is joined by Amie Bradley and asking the question to God: I know you have promised you’ll provide and be faithful, but why are my circumstances not reflective of your promises? Amie challenges us on the day in-between Good Friday & Easter...

Bonus: Holy Week: Luke 23

Today’s passage discusses the unfair trial and death of Jesus. Oftentimes, believers can fly past Jesus’s death to get to the resurrection, but today Ryan Garrahan & Emma Dotter unpack how Jesus’ complete innocence can challenge believers today. There is a daily need to repeat the gospel to yourself, and Ryan challenges us to take the time to reflect on the gravity of our sin, and the full gift of salvation given to us...

Bonus: Holy Week: Luke 22:7-23

In what ways does the Bible portray Jesus as the Passover Lamb? In today’s episode, Watermark Institute Student, Hannah Staubs interviews Great Questions Facilitator, Travis Bruster to explain what the Passover is and how we see it in light of Jesus.    Additional Scripture mentioned in today's episode:  Exodus 12, Institution of the Passover  1 Corinthians 5, Jesus as passover lamb    More info on Easter...

1 and 2 kings.

In this episode we kick off our HighLight study by discussing the "Journey" we're on together - both in our spiritual life and as a body at Watermark reading through the Bible together. Successful and enjoyable journeys require knowing our destination, reading and heeding "the Map" (God's Word, our faithful guide), traveling in groups, and perseverance - and the same is true in our spiritual life. We will discuss these "tips for travelers" and how to read and heed the Word of God for its maximum benefit: to know the God of the Word!

Spot to Park

Joseph Gangi makes our eyes play tricks on us.

A woman lays on a park bench on a sunny day.

By Sam Corbin

Jump to: Today’s Theme | Tricky Clues

WEDNESDAY PUZZLE — A cognitive phenomenon known as frequency illusion, also called the Baader-Meinhof effect , describes that feeling you get after encountering something once and then seeming to notice it everywhere. This phenomenon came to mind as I was solving Joseph Gangi’s crossword, which happens to use a theme style I just wrote about (click at your own puzzle-spoiling risk) only two weeks ago.

This is Mr. Gangi’s third puzzle for The New York Times, and one might refer to its theme as a frequency illusion, in the sense that once the grid is complete, we realize how infrequently a certain bit of language was inside of it.

Today’s Theme

The revealer for Mr. Gangi’s puzzle is tucked at the bottom of the southeast corner, occupying the last Across clue. A “Feature of 20-Across” is, “when sounded out, a feature of today’s puzzle” (73A), clues included. (Say that three times fast.) There’s nothing obviously out of the ordinary — nothing glaring, one might say — and for me it was only when the Greek mythology in the grid came together that everything snapped into place.

POLYPHEMUS (20A) is the “Cave dweller of Greek myth” in Homer’s ODYSSEY (41A). He is also called THE CYCLOPS (60A). A “Classic feature” of this character is his ONE EYE (73A). And now, even with only ONE EYE open — I hope you can see where this is going — the entire grid and clue set features only one “I.” That’s in the circle at the top of 18-Across, and it’s fittingly centered in the upper part of the grid, just like the eye in POLYPHEMUS’s head.

Tricky Clues

18A. The nature of this “Cry after a poke” is ambiguous — “That hurt!” or “I’m awake!” both fit in our squares, for instance. This grid’s answer is I CAN’T SEE, and presumably the poker is the one who needs a better sightline. (N.B.: Please do not poke a stranger. May I recommend a gentle tap?)

70A. You may be tempted to think “Wrap for a monarch?” is a reference to royalty, but a question mark at the end of the clue should always redirect your instincts to the less obvious, or almost too obvious to be correct, answer. This “monarch” is a butterfly, and the entry is COCOON.

71A. Abbreviations abound in “D.C.’s B and A: Abbr,” but don’t get lost in them! This clue is asking for an abbreviation for Washington, D.C.’s alphabetically lettered streets. The answer is STS.

5D. At first glance, “Beth preceder” looks as if “Beth” refers to the end of a name, in which case the answer might be “Eliza.” That’s a convenient bit of misdirection. “Beth” stands on its own as the second letter of the Hebrew alphabet. (It is also sometimes spelled “bet.”) The letter that precedes it is ALEPH .

27D. To “Eschew the pews, say” is to ELOPE, using “pews” as a metonym for the marriage altar.

61D. Mind the comma in “An OK place to be naked, once.” This clue is referring to a past time with “once,” and that place was EDEN. Now that I’ve brought it up, though, I can’t think of a single instance in which it is “OK to be naked once.”

66D. “Lead regulator, for short” offers a two-pronged challenge: We may stumble over either the search for an abbreviation or the pronunciation of “lead,” which here refers to the element, and not to a leading figure. The answer is E.P.A.

Constructor Notes

I really wanted to make the “one I” gimmick part of the solving experience, so the first submission of this puzzle had the lone “I” in an unchecked square surrounded with black squares (giving a visual representation of an eye). This required solvers to figure out, through the revealer, that there is only one “I” in the puzzle. Then, observing no “I” yet in the grid (or clues), for them to confidently place an “I” in the unchecked square. Yeah, maybe a little too ambitious. Going back to basics (and proper crossword convention), I settled with circling the “I” and making the crossings related to the theme in a silly way, as both words recount what happened to poor Cy. I also kept the letter “I” out of the clues; it was no longer necessary, but I thought it gave the puzzle a nice added touch without really sacrificing anything. My favorite edit in the final version is the clue change in 21-down to be a shout-out to Homer — fantastic!

Journey has long been one of the bestselling bands in the U.S. For decades, the rock group has outpaced so many of their competitors in the industry in one specific manner, as Americans never seem to tire of their music.

This week, Journey’s Greatest Hits , the singles-packed compilation from the band, hits 800 weeks on the Billboard 200. It ranks as the third-longest-charting title on the ranking of the most-consumed albums in the U.S., and Journey is in incredible company by reaching this milestone.

Journey is just the third musical act to see one project live on the Billboard 200 for at least 800 weeks. They join a club that includes both Pink Floyd and Bob Marley, two of the most beloved names in music history.

For many years now, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon has ranked as the album with the most weeks spent on the Billboard 200. The rockers are in a very distant first place, and the public isn’t done with that title just yet.

This time around, Dark Side of the Moon is back on the Billboard 200 after falling away some time ago. As of this frame, the project has lived on the roster for 989 weeks, and that number increases with some regularity.

In second place on this list of the longest-charting titles in the history of the Billboard 200 is Legend by Bob Marley and the Wailers. That compilation has earned 830 stays on the tally, including this week.

This time around, Journey’s Greatest Hits falls down the chart, though it’s not in danger of disappearing from the tally. The compilation slips from No. 71 to No. 90, tumbling nearly 20 spaces. It shifted 12,376 equivalent units in the past tracking period, which is down a little more than 3% from the period before, according to Luminate.

It will be some time before another album reaches 800 weeks on the Billboard 200, but it certainly will happen again. Metallica’s self-titled project has now spent 746 frames on the list. Behind that title comes Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Chronicle: The 20 Greatest Hits , which has yet to reach 700 stays.
