School Tours & Workshops

The Queens Museum’s School Programs provide Pre-K-12 students with engaging learning experiences that integrate in-depth observation, interpretation of art and historical exhibitions, and hands-on art-making activities. All of our school programs emphasize Common Core and Next Generation Learning standards–particularly in English Language Arts and New York City’s Blueprints for Teaching and Learning in the Arts–and can be adapted for any grade level.

Our guided tours and workshops are led by experienced Teaching Artists, connecting our permanent collection and rotating contemporary exhibitions to our workshop curriculum and themes.

Appointments are required for all school groups visiting the Queens Museum and must be scheduled at least three weeks in advance. Availability is limited.

Our two-hour school program includes a guided gallery experience and art-making workshop  incorporating our permanent collections such as t he Panorama of the City of New York ,  Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass , Relief Map of the New York City Water Supply System , and the World’s Fair Collection . 

Guided tours and workshops are offered Monday – Friday, between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm. Before scheduling your guided tour and workshop , p lease review our School Group Guidelines  in advance of your visit.

To explore the Museum independently, teachers and students may schedule a Self-Guided Visit .

Our guided school programs can accommodate a maximum of 25 participants , with one chaperone for every 10 students. Larger groups will be divided into smaller groups in order to offer more individual attention to students and maintain safety in the galleries and other museum spaces. 

The Museum reserves the right to limit the number of adult chaperones participating in school programs.

Guided Tour & Workshop Themes

Panorama: City Blocks Recommended Grades: Pre-K through 5th grade Learning Standards: Science and Literacy

Panorama City Blocks is the Museum’s most popular workshop and a tradition for many school groups annually. Students will experience a guided tour of the Panorama of the City of New York, Queens Museum’s 9,335 square foot model of NYC hand rendered as a 3-dimensional architectural model. Under the guidance of Queens Museum teaching artists, students will problem solve while making their own models of urban communities. Focus can be placed on “Sustainability and the Environment”, “Transportation” and “Urban Planning”, while examining the differences between urban, suburban, and rural areas. Students draw on the aesthetic cues from the Panorama as a jumping off point to discuss architecture, sustainable living, and the ecological future of NYC as well as their own experiences as urban inhabitants.

Panorama: Suspension Bridges Recommended Grades: 4th through 5th grade Learning Standards: Math, Science and Literacy

Working in teams, students construct a three-dimensional suspension bridge as they learn about transportation flow and the structural components used in the building of bridges as well as, key architectural terminology. Queens Museum Teaching Artists will lead students on a guided tour experience of the Panorama of the City of New York with attention to stories of bridge construction and the overarching transportation history of New York City. 

Tiffany Lamps: Tiffany Windows Recommended Grades: 1st to 3rd Learning Standards: Literacy and Cognitive Development, Science, History

Students discover Louis Comfort Tiffany’s glass through a variety of hands-on experiences. Students participate in storytelling, movement exercises and art-making activities that focus on pre-literacy skills such as shape, color, and pattern recognition, as well as creativity and self-expression. In conjunction with a guided tour and discussion in the Tiffany gallery, students learn about the history of Louis Comfort Tiffany and the science behind glass-making, constructing faux stained-glass window panes using transparent paper and collage materials in the art studio. 

Cancellations & Rescheduling

If you need to change or cancel, please contact us as soon as possible.   Cancellation requests must be sent by email to [email protected] two weeks prior to your scheduled visit. Your cancellation is only finalized once acknowledged by an email response. Schools who cancel with less than two weeks notice will incur a cancellation fee of half the total cost of the program.

If you need to reschedule (with at least two week’s notice), we will make every effort to accommodate a new proposed date, but cannot guarantee a spot. Schools who cancel with less than 48 hours notice, or do not attend on their scheduled date, are responsible for the full amount.

DOE Cancellation: The Queens Museum agrees to cancel or reschedule tours with no fee if the NYC Department of Education issues a cancellation of field trips and/or school due to outside circumstances or inclement weather.

We reserve the right to cancel museum visits based on circumstances beyond our control. If we have to cancel a visit, we’ll notify you as soon as possible and assist you in rescheduling. If we are unable to reschedule, we’ll provide a full refund.

Late Arrivals

Groups are responsible for arriving at the Museum at their scheduled time. Please carefully review driving and/or public transportation directions in advance and be aware of traffic/transit issues. Review our Visit page to note our location in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, transportation recommendations, and any updates that may impact your travel.

Unfortunately, we cannot delay or extend the length of your guided tour because of late arrival. Late groups are still responsible for paying the full amount.

If your group is in transit and going to be late, please call our front desk at 718-592-9700, ext 233.

We do our best to be flexible with every school but late cancellations and no-show groups incur significant staffing costs to the Museum. Schools with outstanding invoices and groups that repeatedly cancel with late or no notice may be prevented from booking trips in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have a lunchroom or cafe space for our group to eat?

The Queens Museum does not have lunchroom facilities available for school groups. We can store lunches along with bags and coats during your tour, and we encourage you to enjoy lunch in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, just outside the Museum entrance.

My group includes students with disabilities, should I use a separate reservation form?

The Museum welcomes visitors with disabilities and we offer discounted rates for Title 1 & District 75 Schools. Please use our standard School Group Reservation Form and let us know any accommodations we can provide to meet your needs. You can also review our Social Narrative to help prepare for your visit.

My group size is changing, can we change our reservation?

Please let us know any requests to change your reservation as soon as possible by emailing [email protected] . Please include your name, phone number, confirmation number, name of organization, and date and time of your visit. 

If you are expecting more than 25 students your group is subject to an additional group visit fee and will need to divide into smaller groups. Due to capacity, only five chaperones are permitted per group and we may not be able to accommodate the additional adults. If this is the case, the additional adults are welcome to explore the Museum and reconnect with the group afterward.

Where should our school bus or van park at the Museum?

Buses and vans may stop on the Grand Central Parkway side of the Museum and drop students directly at the entrance. Aside from drop-off and pick-up, there is no parking directly at the Museum entrance. Free parking with limited spaces is available in lots on either side of the Museum. We recommend buses park in the larger southern lot, to the right of the Museum.

Here are some citywide opportunities for teachers to supplement traditional classroom instruction with hands on, experiential learning for their students. See a list of current offerings below, organized by borough. 

• Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum Through touch-tours, open-ended inquiry challenges, craft projects, and interactive games, Bartow Pell’s curriculum-rich sessions build critical thinking and evidential reasoning skills that benefit students across disciplines.
• Bronx River Alliance The Bronx River Alliance's Education Program helps schools and community organizations use the river as a classroom, engaging youth and adults in a variety of enjoyable and educational activities. The Alliance provides teachers with training, curriculum consulting, lesson plans, equipment and supplies to support students in becoming river doctors, scientists and more.
• Bronx Zoo The WCS Education Department offers a variety of standards-based learning experiences at our parks and at schools.
• Rocking the Boat Rocking the Boat's On-Water Classroom exposes students to the joy of rowing and the ecological diversity of the Bronx River.
• Wave Hill Immerse your class in nature as you explore Wave Hill’s glorious gardens and woodlands. An experienced educator leads your class in outdoor exploration and hands-on activities that help students at all levels make meaningful connections to the environment.
• 826 NYC storytelling and bookmaking 826NYC hosts classes across New York City for Write Together: an interactive writing experience that encourages creative expression, explore the elements of storytelling and strengthens writing skills. Elementary and middle school classes collaborate on illustrated children’s books, middle schoolers can choose their own adventure with multi-ending stories, and high schoolers learn the art of memoir writing during a fast-paced and whimsical 90-minute narrative program. • Aviator Sports and Events Center This 175,000-square-foot facility has two regulation NHL ice rinks, a 20,000-square-foot field house, a gymnastics center, a rock wall and two outdoor fields. Groups can participate in basketball, volleyball, soccer, gymnastics, ice skating, flag football, rock climbing, team-building activities, swimming and bubble soccer.
• Brooklyn Botanic Garden Registered school groups can visit the Brooklyn Botanic Garden for free. The Garden also offers 90-minute guided workshop programs for students in pre-K through 8th grade ($150 per class; a discount is available for Title I schools) to help students explore trees, plants and flowers.
• Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy The Conservancy offers a variety of programs for children in grades K-12, with topics including the ecology of Brooklyn Bridge Park, engineering, geological formations, sustainability and more.
• Brooklyn Children's Museum The Brooklyn Children's Museum offers on-site school programs as well as "Museum on the Go" art, culture, math and science curriculum kits that can be used in your classroom. A limited number of free school programs for Title I schools are available.
• Brooklyn Navy Yard BLDG 92 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard partners with the Brooklyn Historical Society to offer free education programs. Students visiting the Brooklyn Navy Yard will learn to think like historians and engineers through hands-on investigation of Brooklyn’s material culture, art and written documents. • Brooklyn Robot Foundry Show your students the wonder of building robots with workshops on simple circuits, vibration, switches, LEDs and more.
• Environmental Study Center This 7,000-square-foot learning center in Bergen Beach, Brooklyn, is home to over 200 living organisms, four learning labs, an outdoor learning space with a pond habitat and urban garden, and a greenhouse laboratory.
• New York Aquarium Classes, group tours and self-guided tours are available for all grades.
• New York Transit Museum Led by a staff of skilled educators, school programs complement curricular exploration of the New York City history, the engineering sciences, the mathematics and art of subway and station design, and the urban landscape.
• Newtown Creek Alliance The Newtown Creek Alliance offers guided tours through the Newtown Creek watershed focusing on the history, industrial use and environment challenges in the area.
• Prospect Park Zoo Guided tours on themes including animal adaptations, animal families, animal defenses, diets and habits are available. Self-guided tours and classes are also offered.
• Waterfront Museum Docked in Red Hook, Brooklyn, this floating classroom helps students learn about geography, history, social studies and science aboard the last remaining covered wooden barge.
• Weeksville Heritage Center Weeksville Heritage Center, Brooklyn’s largest African-American cultural institution, is a multidisciplinary museum dedicated to preserving the history of the 19th-century African American community of Weeksville, Brooklyn — one of America’s first free black communities.
• Wyckoff House Museum The Wyckoff House Museum preserves, interprets, and operates New York City’s oldest building and the surrounding one-and-a-half acres of park. Through innovative educational and farm-based programs it builds cultural and agricultural connections within our community, emphasizing immigration, family, food, and community through history.
• American Museum of Natural History The Museum of Natural History is a top field trip destination in New York City: amazing new exhibits, over 32 million objects in their permanent collections, and exceptional programs, resources and classes for students and teachers. 
• Asia Society and Museum Building on the idea of the Museum as an extension of the classroom, Asia Society offers interactive guided tours for school groups in grades 3–12. In the galleries, teachers and students can learn about the works of art on view, discuss how art relates to their own experiences, and discover what’s new and compelling about art today.
• Battery Urban Farm Explore The Battery with lesson materials covering agriculture, urban ecosystems, nutrition and history.
• Cathedral of St. John the Divine This landmark building offers numerous field trips aligned with state standards, some free, for NYC schools. Programs are available in architecture and geometry, medieval journeys, immigration, shapes and patterns, world religions, civic engagement and more.
• Center for Architecture The Center for Architecture offers hands-on workshops at its SoHo location and school-based residency programs for K-12 students.
• Central Park Zoo Self-guided tours, guided tours and classes are available.
• Chelsea Piers Sports and Entertainment Center This 80,000-square-foot center offers a variety of sports activities, including soccer, rock climbing, gymnastics, basketball and more.
• Children's Museum of Manhattan The museum’s theme-based, 90-minute guided group visits for grades K-8 are led by a museum educator and include a tour of a thematic exhibition and a hands-on arts workshop. In-school residency programs are also available.
• Cooper Hewitt Design Cooper Hewitt offers two free design programs for K-12 students. 
• Democracy Now! Give students an opportunity to visit a news studio control room to view a live taping of Democracy Now!, followed by a discussion about independent news and investigative journalism. Trips are free.
• Drawing Center This SoHo center offers two free programs for K-12 students, comprised of on-site and in-school activities. The experience includes a guided tour and hands-on projects.
• El Museo del Barrio El Museo del Barrio offers guided tours of the museum as well as walking tours of the surrounding neighborhood, both of which allow students to participate in sketching, movement and writing activities.
• Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration On ranger-led programs, students in grades 3-12 can play the role of newly arrived immigrants. Self-guided activities for grades 2-12 are also available.
• Empire State Building The Empire State Building offers lesson plans connecting to social studies, science and technology, history and geography, as well as a virtual tour.
• Governors Island Teaching Garden In April through October, students will rotate through hands-on stations that typically include a farm tour, planting or farm work activity, cooking or harvesting and tasting activity, and possible fourth mini-lesson. 
• Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum The Intrepid offers social, studies, history and science programs for students in pre-K through 12th grade.
• Merchant's House Museum The landmark Merchant's House, preserved intact, offers an authentic glimpse into life in the mid-19th century. Students explore four floors of period rooms.
• Metropolitan Museum of Art Guided tours and self-guided group admission are available. Guided tour topics include exploring art across cultures, stories and legends, faces and masks and art explorations of particular locations and time periods.
• Metropolitan Opera Access Opera engages students with the unforgettable experience of watching a performance live on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House and provides teachers with resources for drawing connections across literature, social studies, foreign language, and the arts
• Morgan Library and Museum Explore curriculum in the sciences and humanities through direct observation of primary sources, such as Mesopotamian seals and tablets, medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, rare printed books, master drawings and period architecture. • New York City Fire Museum The museum, in conjunction with the New York City Fire Department, operates a world-class fire safety education program designed to teach participants how to prevent fires within the home and how to protect themselves and escape should a fire occur. The program consists of two components— classroom training and a simulated fire event in a mock home environment.
• New-York Historical Society Bring your students on a trip to the oldest museum in New York! Whether they are visiting a special exhibition or our beautifully redesigned permanent collection galleries, students will be actively engaged with the stuff of history — the artifacts, works of art, and documents that provide a window onto our collective past.
• New York Improv Theatre Interactive shows and workshops entertain audiences with creative comedy arts.
• Paley Center for Media Using programs from the collection of television and radio recordings as a means of illustration and investigation, Paley Center educators lead sessions on a wide range of subjects such as advertising, the documentary form, and the civil rights movement. Inquiry-based classes seek to build analytical thinking, viewing, and listening skills and attempt to provide insight into the roles television and radio play in our culture.

• King Manor Museum Programs focus on life and work at King Manor in Jamaica, Queens, in the 19th century and the history of the King family in early America and the anti-slavery movement.
• Louis Armstrong House Museum The Louis Armstrong House Museum sustains and promotes the cultural, historical, and humanitarian legacy of Louis Armstrong by preserving and interpreting Armstrong’s house and grounds and collecting and sharing archival materials that document Armstrong’s life and legacy. • Materials for the Arts The Education Center at Materials for the Arts in Long Island City, Queens, offers programming focused on creative reuse: making art with readily available materials and the ever-changing MFTA warehouse inventory. The Center hosts field trips programs for students and P-Credit courses for teachers in two classroom studios, organizes exhibitions of artwork at MFTA Gallery, and sends teaching artists into schools to share reuse techniques.

• Historic Richmond Town Using history and culture as a foundation, the museum explores the roles and lives of men, women, and children throughout the centuries. School tours and workshops are available.
• Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanic Garden Snug Harbor on Staten Island offers four 90-minute outdoor tour varieties: New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden, Wetlands, Snug Harbor Pastoral Grounds and Gardens, and Snug Harbor Heritage Farm. Each tour may be paired with a class; topics include Chinese calligraphy, wetlands, the water cycle and more.
• Staten Island Children's Museum Guided by a museum educator, students will learn through hands-on experience. 
• Staten Island Museum School and educator programs use the Staten Island Museum’s collection and exhibitions to create a forum for ideas, debate, and exchange. Programs at the Museum and in the classroom offer students and teachers an interdisciplinary and hands-on learning experience.

Class Trips

The New York Botanical Garden becomes a 250-acre classroom for you and your students to explore. Active learning takes place in three unique sites and across Garden grounds. Students become gardeners in the Ruth Rea Howell Vegetable Garden at the Edible Academy; they become naturalists investigating plant and animal life in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden; and at the GreenSchool in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, students become world explorers examining the glass-enclosed rain forests and deserts. NYBG’s Class Trips offer something for every age group.

All of NYBG’s programs complement classroom learning and support learning standards prescribed by New York City and New York State, and also align with the national Next Generation Science Standards.

Explore the cultural narrative of people—and the food they grow and eat now and through history. Learn about the living and preserved garden of the Black American diaspora through hands-on activities and an introduction to culinary traditions.

Math in the Garden (Grades 3–5) | Winter

Explore the Edible Academy as a site to spark student curiosity with mathematics applications, from planning a garden plot to crafting a recipe.

High School Offerings

Visit the Edible Academy to practice organic gardening methods and explore foodways. Consider the implications and applications of the lessons learned at NYBG for your neighborhood. Kids Programs

Queens Botanical Garden’s Kids Programs bring together youngsters from around New York City to enjoy seasonal, hands-on learning and gardening experiences year-round. Through exploration, nature study, and craft activities, we explore concepts of gardening and environmental stewardship at age-appropriate levels within each program.

The Children’s Garden is a fun and exciting place where kids spend time planting, playing, observing, and learning in a nurturing environment.  Our program offers a blend of structured and freeform exploration, designed to provide children the supports they need to express their natural curiosity.

Young gardeners will learn to grow and harvest vegetables, bringing their food from seed to table. Each session incorporates the garden as a resource to support nature discovery, hands-on time in the garden, thematic activities, botanical art, and science investigations.

This program is for drop-off only,  held outdoors for the majority of the time with access to indoor program space. Masks are not required. We kindly require that all children are able to use the restroom independently.

*Lunch is not provided as a part of this program.

Give your middle schooler the summer of a lifetime! Instructors challenge young naturalists to use their observation skills and individual experiences as each discovers how plants, sustainability, and local ecosystems are part of everyday life. Using critical thinking and team collaboration, budding ecologists will learn to hunt edible weeds, identify local birds and mammals, trap insects and freshwater invertebrates, and so much more!

This program is for drop-off only and takes place mostly all outdoors. Participants may go indoors for inclement weather. Masks are not required. We kindly require that all children are able to use the restroom independently.

• Seasonal and weather-appropriate clothing: raincoat/poncho, rain boots, sweater/jacket/coat, gloves, hat, sunscreen for summer programs, etc.
• Seasonally appropriate shoes that will stay attached to your feet and can withstand getting muddy.
• Hand warmers (optional)

Health & Safety

For the safety of students, staff and families, QBG is closely following CDC guidelines. As such, the following health and safety measures are in effect for 2023 programs. We will continue to monitor and update parents with any changes.

• Vaccines are strongly encouraged but not required.
• Participants and staff are not required to wear masks indoors. Individuals may choose to still wear masks.
• Staff and students are required to stay home if they or anyone in their household tests positive for COVID-19, or other contagious viruses. For reference, please review CDC guidelines.
• In the last 48 hours, have you experienced symptoms of COVID-19 or other contagious viruses?
• Have you tested positive through a diagnostic test for COVID-19 or another contagious virus in the past 10 days?
• Has anyone in your household tested positive for COVID-19 or another contagious virus in the past 10 days?
• Please notify us if your child (program participant) tests positive for COVID-19 or another contagious virus..
• When we are notified of a positive case in a program, we will notify families via email that someone in their group tested positive
• If a student becomes ill with symptoms during the day, a staff member will quarantine the student away from the group and notify a parent/guardian for pickup. We will follow the most current CDC guidelines on when that child and others can come back to class.
• Parking for all programs is $5.00, an exclusive rate for kids programs participants.
• Families have a 15-minute window for drop off at the parking circle.

Payment, Cancelations, and Refunds

• 10% discount off program fee for Family-Level Members and above
• All programs are rain or shine.
• We have a no-refund policy within 30 days from the program start date. If you must cancel after registering, notify the Kids Programs staff at 718-886-3800 x218 or [email protected] at least 30 full days before the start of the program and the Garden will refund 75% of the program cost.
• Refunds and credits are not issued for partial attendance or after the program begins. Registrations are nontransferable.
• There will not be make-up classes for absences due to illness from common contagious viruses, including COVID-19.

You are issued an e-invoice upon making a reservation. Full payment is due three weeks before your trip*. If payment is not received by the due date indicated on your invoice, your trip is considered canceled. 

*We do not issue refunds or credits if you bring fewer admissions. You are permitted to underpay by several admissions in advance. We perform headcounts of all students and parents upon arrival, and will collect for additional admissions due on the day of your trip. 

Registration minimums:

Guided programs require a minimum of 20 people per class/group. You may reserve a program for fewer people, but are obligated to pay the fee for 20 people (enables us to cover staff/supply costs).

Registration maximums:

Once you make a reservation, the number of spaces you reserve represents students and parents and is the maximum number of people you can bring for your trip.

Chaperones:

Parent chaperones are charged admission and we recommend 2-3 parents per class. Teachers, paraprofessionals and other school/organization staff are not charged admission. For summer programs, we charge per person including staff and offer one free admission for every 25 people.

Hayrides are included in several programs: Seed to Pumpkin, Seasonal Farm Tours, and Animal Adventures. Hayrides are not offered in winter, but can be added to all other spring, summer, and fall programs for an additional $1/person.

If you wish to bring bagged lunch, you will be asked to indicate this when you register for your program. Lunch time typically occurs after your program. Eating areas are indoors, outdoors, or picnic-style, and are assigned based on availability.

All programs are offered rain or shine, and most aspects occur outdoors. Cancellations are at the discretion of Queens Farm. If you choose not to attend the trip due to inclement weather, call us by 8:30 am the day of your trip to cancel and receive a credit to use within the school year. Refunds are not offered and no-shows will be charged the full amount.

Recently, offMetro and The Skint created a list of some of the best free and cheap things to do in Brooklyn . This month, we rode the rails to Queens, seeking Greek food , free fitness classes , and any other affordable fun we could find.

From a mecca for street artists to museums and outdoor sculpture gardens, here are oM’s five favorite free things to do in Queens.

5Pointz | Free

Where: Long Island City When: Daily Why: The 200,000-square-foot factory building is known as one of the premier centers of the world’s graffiti scene, but visitors can expect to find musicians, break dancers, filmmakers and all other types of artists within its walls. How to get there: Take the 7 to 45 Rd – Court House Square and walk north on 23rd Street.

Queens Botanical Garden | Free

Where: Flushing When: Free on Wednesdays, 3-6pm and Sundays, 4-6pm Why: You’ve likely never met a greener garden. Set on 39 acres, QBG has grown from an exhibit at the 1939 New York World’s Fair to a premier cultural institution that’s helping further the fight for a more sustainable future for NYC. This urban sanctuary has a stunning new LEED Platinum visitors center, peaceful, flower-lined trails, and various education programs—from composting and tree care workshops to a popular farmers market — making the Queens Botanical Garden a great idea for a quick romantic getaway within the city. How to get there: No. 7 subway or Long Island Rail Road (Port Washington line) to Main Street/Flushing. Q44 or Q20 bus, or walk 8 blocks south to QBG.

Museum of the Moving Image | Free

Where: Astoria When: Fridays, free admission, 4pm-8pm Why: From optical toys to digital art, Museum of the Moving Image appeals to artists and TV lovers alike. Check the site for frequently updated events and exhibits like the New York City Greek Film Festival and Jim Henson’s Fantastic World. How to get there: Take the R train to Steinway Street. Walk south on Steinway Street and take a right on 35th Avenue.

Socrates Sculpture Park | Free

Where: Long Island City When: Whenever Why: The story of this park has all the elements of a New York City success story. Up until 1986, the site was an illegal dumping ground and riverside landfill when a group of artists and local community members decided to transform it into an outdoor exhibition space and garden. This verdant gem of NYC also hosts a free craft bazaar, movie night, theatrical performances, farmers markets , and much more. How to get there: Monday through Friday take the N or W train to the Broadway stop in Queens and walk eight blocks west on Broadway (toward the East River) to the intersection of Vernon Boulevard. On Saturday and Sunday, take the N train to the Broadway stop.

Queens Museum of Art | Free

Where: Flushing Meadows Corona Park When: Wednesday – Sunday: 12-6pm, free museum tours on Sundays 2pm, 3pm, 4pm. (Admission is by suggested donation) Why: QMA is home to the world’s largest architectural scale model, and through January 15, the Wonderstruck in the Panorama: Drawings by Brian Selznick will be on view to give a spectacular behind the scenes look at how the museum’s main attraction was designed and constructed. Join the “Dreamers Unite!” art event and outdoor dance party on October 1 at the Unisphere Fountain. How to get there: Take the #7 train to Mets-Willets Point and follow the signs to Flushing Meadows Corona Park through the exit ramp of the station into the park. There will be Queens Museum directing you on a fifteen-minute walk through the park to the museum, which is located next to the Unisphere, the giant steel globe. The entrance is on the side facing the parking lot.

New York City is a great place for families. One thing that helps: free-admission days at museums, gratis concerts and films, complimentary story sessions and exciting events that make local entertainment more affordable than you might expect. We've rounded up the best free ways for visiting and resident families to get out and about.

For culturally curious kids and their moms and dads on a budget, these family-friendly institutions—all of which offer specific days or hours of free entrance—provide inspiring educational outings. 

Brooklyn Children's Museum   Free Thursdays, 2–6pm Spend a few hours at this Crown Heights institution, home to around 30,000 artifacts and objects (plus a few live creatures) with an emphasis on hands-on learning. There's even a special section, Totally Tots, for children 6 and under—a testament to the museum's education-for-all-ages mentality. 

Children's Museum of Manhattan Free every first Friday of the month, 5–8pm Little museumgoers dance, run, solve problems, design and make music at this Upper West Side spot. Exhibitions focus on health, diversity and just plain fun things like cartoons, while workshops and special events help fill the days. 

Museum of the Moving Image Free for kids under 3 and free Fridays, 4–8pm Budding cinephiles can head to Astoria for the country's biggest collection of moving-image artifacts. This interactive institution pays tribute to all aspects of movies, television shows and digital media, from technology to social impact. 

New York Hall of Science   Free Fridays, 2–5pm, and Sundays, 10–11am Kids get hands-on with science and technology at this Queens institution that features more than 450 exhibitions. There are a few worthwhile things to spend money on during your visit: a round of Rocket Park Mini Golf, a turn in the 60,000-square-foot Science Playground and a screening inside the 3-D theater.

Queens County Farm Museum Grounds free daily (check to see if a ticketed public event is occurring) Take the kids to this working farm and check out goats, hens and pigs; the orchard (from which you can purchase apples on October weekends); and old farm buildings.

Waterfront Museum and Showboat Barge Free Thursdays, 4–8pm, and Saturdays, 1–5pm Come tour this history wooden barge that is moored down in Brooklyn's Red Hook, not far from the Fairway Market. Check to see if a performance is taking place—perhaps a magic-, music- or history-related event that may cost money.

Zoos and Gardens

Explore NYC's animal kingdom and plant habitats without spending a dime. Many of the City's nature spots offer free or pay-what-you-wish admission. Get close to the creatures at the Staten Island Zoo, gaze at fish at the New York Aquarium or wander through Wave Hill's colorful grounds.

Movies are pricey (and that's before you start counting in the tubs of popcorn and buckets of soda); concerts even moreso. These options avoid the cost but not the fun. Settle in for a libscreening or catch a stage show at a family-friendly venue or event.

Bargemusic Saturdays, 4pm This old coffee barge docked on the Brooklyn side of the East River has been converted into a classical music venue. On weekends throughout the year you can pay to see performances in its confines; on Saturdays at 4pm, however, there’s usually a free one-hour recital (including a Q&A) that’s geared toward drawing in kids.

LC Kids Artists at David Rubenstein Atrium First Saturdays, 11am Looking for a way to get the kids excited about music and other arts, without a pricey class? Bring them here, where they can engage with the performer and get introduced to all kinds of culture.

Public Libraries (citywide) Free screenings, author talks, concerts, theater and more, most days Books aren't the only free things at the City's public libraries. You'll also find endless entertainment at every branch, like  KidsLIVE and TeenLIVE  culture and arts programs at the New York Public Library and screenings of top films at the  Brooklyn Public Library . At the  Queens Public Library , there are game days, science experiments, spelling bees and Lego clubs. Check your local branch for a full list of offerings.

Theater at the Museum of Modern Art  Free film tickets Fridays, 4–8pm; screenings always free for kids under 16 It pays to be a kid at MoMA. Check moma.org for a schedule of screenings, taking place throughout the week, to see which family-friendly films are on tap (note: a free family-film program also takes place one Saturday a month).

Theatreworks   Free summer theater When the weather warms up, the stage shows become free. This nonprofit theater believes everyone should have access to the arts—so from mid-July to mid-August, you can line up one hour before each performance for the chance to see a gratis show. Field Trips

The Frederick A.O. Schwarz Education Center facilitates programs for thousands of children and adults each year to teach them about our city: the challenges we’ve encountered, the innovations we’ve created, the unique contemporary issues we face as New Yorkers, and the complexity of how the decisions we make today impact our city’s future.    Each field trip is a unique experience, driven by student inquiry, dialogue, and hands-on activities. 

We offer both in-person and virtual field trips. 

Summer booking is now open! Our field trips will be offered from Tuesday, July 9 through Friday, August 23. 

We are also taking reservations for the remainder of the school year, through June 23, 2024.

Explore New York’s rich history of social justice movements to see how activists have reimagined a more just future. Students will use photographs, flyers, posters, and film footage from the exhibition to discuss topics, such as youth action in the Civil Rights Movement, health activism and the Young Lords, and the current Movement for Black Lives. The program will provide space for students to voice their thoughts and participate in a reflective activity about what care for one’s self and community looks like. 

City as Canvas

45 min program for Grades K–1 

60 min program for Grades 2–12 

Explore highlights from the Museum’s graffiti art collection and see original works created by legendary writers such as Daze, Lee Quiñones, Lady Pink, and Keith Haring. Participants will view sketches from the artists’ personal blackbooks, photographs of large-scale pieces on subway cars, and works on canvas as sources for studying graffiti as a dynamic art movement. Students will respond creatively by drafting their own sketches. Participants are encouraged to bring a pencil and paper to the session!   

Getting Around

60 min program for Grades 2–5  

From horse-drawn omnibuses to electric cars, transportation in New York City has undergone many changes from the 1800s to the present day. Students will discuss how New York evolved over time by seeing pictures from the Museum’s collection. Participants will play a matching game and notice how new technologies affected the ways New Yorkers lived and traveled. 

Puppets of New York

60 min program for Grades 2–5  

Explore the many ways that New Yorkers have brought puppets to life on television and in movies, in plays, and on the streets in New York City! Students will see puppets of all shapes and sizes from the Puppets of New York exhibition and examine how puppets are developed, manipulated, and used as tools for building connections and standing up for causes as they draw inspiration from the rich and diverse traditions of puppetry in New York City. 

Civil Rights

75 min program for Grades 9–12 

Explore New York City’s role in the Civil Rights Movement and discover the importance of youth action in the 1964 boycott by NYC students against segregated schools. Participants will hear the stories of Civil Rights activists to learn about New York’s major role in the Black freedom movement and the ongoing movement for racial justice today.

Please note that due to the volume of requests, it may take up to three weeks to receive a response from our School Programs Scheduling Team. Field trips are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.  

For in-person field trips, please bring at least one chaperone per 10 students; a maximum of six chaperones may accompany each class. On the day of your visit, please arrive no earlier than 10 minutes before the scheduled visit for in-person field trips. Field trips will be shortened for late arrivals.

Michigan student dies 'suddenly' on school trip to robotics competition in Texas

A Michigan community is mourning after a student died suddenly while on a school trip to a robotics competition in Texas last week.

The student "suddenly passed away," Lake Orion High School confirmed with USA TODAY Tuesday, but did not identify the student. The school is located in Orion Township, about 40 miles north of Detroit.

"It is with deep regret that we inform you about a recent loss to our school community," superintendent Ben Kirby said in a statement sent out to the student body on Friday, obtained by USA TODAY.

"Today, Friday, April 19, one of our current high school students suddenly passed away. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to their family and friends," the statement continued.

Officials have not identified the student.

Student was attending Robotics World Championship

The school's principal, Dan Hass, informed parents that the student was attending the Robotics World Championship, according to reporting by the Oakland County Times .

“Our hearts are very heavy as we mourn this loss," Hass said, per the outlet. "We will be ready to meet the needs of our students and staff Monday morning.”

Kirby noted in the statement that Lake Orion High School and Lake Orion Community Schools have crisis teams that will be ready to "help with the needs of students and school personnel."

"We are saddened by the loss to our school community and will make every effort to support our high school students through this tragedy," Kirby shared.

Authorities in Houston told USA TODAY a 16-year-old boy from Michigan died as a result of an apparent suicide Friday evening. 

The teen's official cause of death is pending an autopsy by the Harris County Coroner Coroner's Office.

Lake Orion High School Robotics team responds to tragedy

"This has been an incredibly challenging time for our team and community, and we are grateful for the overwhelming support we’ve received," Lake Orion Robotics FIRST Team 302 shared in an Instagram post .

"We’re prioritizing the privacy of the family right now and will share more when it’s appropriate. Thank you all for your understanding and support."

Lake Orion High's robotics team was attending the FIRSTS robotics world championships in Houston, Texas that ran April 17 through April 20, according to the competition's website.

Support has poured in from other robotics teams across the country.

"Everyone on f(x) robotics sends their love and support to all @firstteam302 team members, their families, and the entire Lake Orion community as they get through this incredibly difficult time. #wearealldragons ," a North Carolina team wrote.

"4362 would like to extend our deepest condolences to all of the families, students, mentors, and coaches on @firstteam302 we our all here for you. #morethanrobots #wearealldragons ," wrote a Michigan team.

A West Virgina team said it is "grieved by the fact FIRST has lost a member of its community."

"This is a tragic time for everyone associated with team 302 and the FIRST community," an Idaho team shared.
