➤ What to Watch out for

1. an overhanging konkan kada(cliff) that offers a majestic view of konkan region.

Konkan Kada overlooks the Konkan region hence the name. Kada means cliff in Marathi.

It is a standing tall natural wall that has a concave structure. Because of this structure, you can experience many natural phenomena such as vertical cloud bursts, circular rainbows also called a Brocken spectre.

The clouds nearing the cliff get sucked into the pitfall area below and thrown vertically into the sky. This creates the impression of the vertical cloud burst.

When there is a bit of mist in the valley and the sun is exactly behind the person facing the valley, a circular rainbow can be seen.

2. The historical spots on the top of the Harishchandragad trek

Harishchandragad trek has many temples, Pushkarni and caves on the top. They all represent different cultures starting from the 6th century.

Harishchandreshwar temple is a glorious example of the fine art of carving sculptures out of stones that prevailed in ancient India. This temple has been carved out of a single huge rock.

3. The four pillars of Kedareshwar cave temple.

Kedareshwar cave is located on the right side of the Harishchandra temple. It has a big Shiva Linga surrounded by water. It is very difficult to reach the center, as the water inside will always be cold. The Kedareshwar temple is known for its four pillars. The four pillars represent the four yugas: Satya yuga, Treta yuga, Dvapara yuga, and Kali yuga. The three hanging pillars represent the endings of the respective yugas.

The trails from Walhivale/Belpada village are very challenging. There are three separate trails from Belpada. They are via Nalichi Vaat, Makad Naal and Sadhle ghat. You can also do the combination of Sadhle ghat and Bhailghat. Attempt these routes only if you are an experienced trekker. You need to have climbing equipment like rope and carabiner.

If you are a beginner, take the trail that starts from Pachnai. It is the quickest and easiest trail to reach Harishchandragad fort.

The trail from Khireshwar is for those who have some trekking experience. However, many trekkers prefer this route as it is a package of views and adventures.

The trail information for all the routes is given in this section.

❖ Harishchandragad Trek Via Khireshwar (Moderate Route)

Khireshwar trek trail has to two routes, one is via Rajmarg and the other trail is via Tolar Khind.

The trail via Rajmarg has some dangerous sections. Hence it is not recommended if you do not have trekking experience.

The trail via Tolar Khind offers a beautiful view and has some challenging sections. To know the complete trail information for this route go through the explanation given below.

This trail can be divided into 3 sections.

  • Trek from Khireshwar village to the forest section - 30 minutes
  • Forest section to the Tolar Khind - 1 hour 30 minutes
  • From Tolar Khind to Harishchandragad Top - 3 hours

Section I: Khireshwar Village to the Forest Section

Trek distance: 1.3 km  Trek duration: 30 minutes GPS coordinates of the starting point at Khireshwar Village: 19°22'17.00"n,  73°48'33.63"e GPS coordinates of the Forest Section: 19°22'56.74"n, 73°48'24.23"e

Harishchandragad trek starts from Khireshwar village. You have to walk from Khubi Phata along the Pimpalgaon dam for 5 km. It will take an hour and a half to reach the starting point from where you get down from the bus.

Just after you cross the Pimpalgaon dam, you can see a board on your left which is the starting point of the trek.

The trail from the village to the beginning of the forest section has a flat ground. You will be trekking next to the paddy field all the way to the forest.

The mighty mountains in front of you add up to your excitement. The trail from here is pretty straight forward. You can follow the same trail until you reach a junction where the forest section starts. It will take 35 minutes to reach the starting point of the forest.

Section II: Forest section to the Tolar Khind

Trek distance: 1.8 km Trek duration:  1 hour 30 minutes GPS coordinates of the Forest Section:   19°22'56.74"n, 73°48'24.23"e GPS coordinates of the Tolar Khind:   19°23'42.00"n,  73°48'11.02"e

From the Junction, take a right to enter the forest. You can experience a sudden change in the surroundings.

The initial section of the forest will have many small streams during the monsoon season. You can hear the gushing sound of streams, birds chirping and the rustling sound of leaves while trekking.

The trail becomes steeper as you trek in the forest. There are a few sections with loose rocks. Make sure you keep your foot carefully.

Tip: Wear proper trekking shoes. Carry a trekking pole as well if you have. These 2 trekking gears really help you while trekking.

Some parts of the forest trails are very narrow and can be slippery. Only one person can trek at a time. Be careful in those sections.

Continue to trek on the same trail until you see a small tea stall. It will take 1 hour 30 minutes to reach this point. This location is the starting point of the Tolar Khind.

Take a break for 10 minutes here. Drink water. If you are buying anything from the stall, make sure you do not litter the place. Carry your own tiff-in box and a mug and use them when you are buying anything from these stalls to avoid producing any waste on the trail.

Section III: From Tolar Khind to Harishchandragad Top

Trek distance: 5 km Trek duration: 3 hours GPS coordinates for the Harishchandragad:   19°23'35.91"n,  73°47'42.45"e GPS coordinates of the Tolar Khind:   19°23'42.00"n,  73°48'11.02"e

Once you start the trek from Tolar Khind you have to climb a big rock patch which is almost 65 to 70 degree.

There are poles and chains for support. You do not require a rope to climb. After 11 AM these poles and chains become hot which makes it difficult to hold. Make sure you cross this section as early as possible in the morning.

It will take an hour to complete this rock patch and reach a plateau. You can see the Pimpalgaon dam and Khireshwar village from here.

There are 2 routes from here. The trail on the right goes to the temple through seven hills and the straight trail goes through a dense forest.

If you are trekking in a group, take the straight trail. Within an hour you will reach below the Balekilla.

If you are trekking alone, take the trail to the right. It will take around 2 to 3 hours to reach the temple. However, trail is pretty flat.

You can see a series of local stalls there. You can also see many tents pitched for camping. This is the top of the fort.

Explore the fort before you head to Konkan Kada. Saptateertha Pushkarni, Kedareshwar cave and the temple of Harishchandreshwar are some of the historical places you must visit on the fort.

Have lunch and rest for a while near the temple. You need to have full energy to enjoy the magnificent view waiting for you at the Konkan Kada.

Start the trek to Konkan Kada after having enough rest. It will take 30 minutes from the temple to Konkan Kada. You need to reach there well before sunset.

You can clearly recognise your destination as many of them would be just waiting with their camera on to capture the mesmerizing sunset.

The best view can be seen from the extreme right end of the cliff. The view of the Konkan from there is mindblowing. Observe the waterfalls that are on the extreme left side of the cliff. Immerse yourself in the beauty and enjoy the sunset. This is the perfect way to end the long day.

Explore the fort after you take a break.

❖Harishchandragad Trek via Nalichi Vaat (Difficult Route)

Nalichi Vaat (which translates to ‘passage through a gorge’) is a channel that lies to the extreme right of the mountain. It is the most difficult path to the top.

Popular among climbers and experienced trekkers, Nalichi Vaat involves a near 80-degree climb, involving steep rock patches.

The trail begins on a stream bed filled with large man-sized rocks and eventually leads to the foot of the gorge.

This trek can be done as a 2 days trek. You can follow below explained trail information for a better experience.

Day 1: Belpada Village to Konkan Kada

Trek distance: 6 km Trek duration:   9 hours GPS coordinates of the Belpada village: 19°22'44.1"n 73°44'38.3"e GPS coordinates of the Konkan Kada:   19°23'28.63"n 73°46'15.96"e

The trek from the base village to the top of Harishchandragad takes nearly nine hours. Start as early as possible. It’s advisable to camp the previous night at Belpada village, which is the base camp, after arriving from Kalyan.

In the morning, a five-minute walk will lead you to a nearby stream lying alongside the village. You can arrange breakfast here, maybe poha and black tea, from one of the local houses.

The main trail starts from behind the base village, leading to the base of the mountain. Take a narrow track that leads to the back of the village and extends into a wide grassy plain that forms the foot of the mountain.

Keep proceeding on the same path and 15 minutes later, the track narrows down beneath a sparse forest cover. A short walk of 10 more minutes will lead to the mainstream bed.

The trail leading to the rocky stream bed and mountain base

Take the rocky trail that winds through the stream bed, upstream, leading towards the mountain. The stream bed is full of large rocks and you have to be careful not to set foot on loose rocks and risk serious injury.

Walk along this trail for 30 minutes and you will reach the last visible water source of the trek. The stream bed here is in the form of cascaded rock platforms and forms a tiny waterfall. You can rest here for a few minutes before moving on.

The trail from here is uphill and continues to remain rocky. The gradient does not change, there are no landmarks and you will have to keep following the steep track uphill for the next 90 minutes.

Look out for a Nali (gorge) as you make your way. The Nali is basically a gorge that lies to the extreme right of the mountain. Once you reach the mouth of the gorge, you will be able to see a narrow channel that extends to the top of the mountain. A further 30-minute uphill hike will get you to the start of the gorge.

The route from Nali is a steep uphill climb involving multiple rock patches. Here, you will have to climb slippery and at times loose, rock faces. A 20-minute climb will bring you to a rock patch that extends up to 25 ft high. Experienced climbers can cover this and set up the climbing gear for the rest of the group. It takes nearly two hours to cover this difficult section.

On successfully climbing and getting over the gorge, you will come across a vast grassy plain that forms the base of the final push to the top.

From here, you get your first glimpse of the magnificent Konkan Kada. One final 20 ft climb presents to you the vast plain that forms the Harishchandragad.

The trail winds through some thick knee-length vegetation and 15 minutes later, leads to the edge of the main mountain top (Konkan Kada).

Set up a camp in the grassy plains. Dinner can be arranged from a nearby settlement that runs an eatery. If you do not have proper camping gear, you can choose to rest the night in one of the caves situated all over the fort.

Harishchandragad Trek

Harishchandragad Trek

The Harishchandragad Trek is a trek that begins in Tolar Khind and ends in Khireshwar Village. The best time to go on this trek is from August to February, when the greenery is at its peak. There are small shops that sell mineral water and snacks. The only downside is that the trek isn’t very strenuous. The route is mostly flat with some stretches that require some climbing.

You can choose to start your trek from any point, but the best route is from the village of Pachnai. It takes around six hours to complete the trip from beginning to end. The trek begins with a hut in Pachnai, but you can also begin your journey at Khireshwar Village.

For this trek, you will need trekking shoes, trekking poles, extra socks, and extra clothes. The weather is unpredictable, but you can be certain that it will be a magical experience.

Once you reach the fort, you can spend the night there. If you have the time, you can also take a short walk up to the temple. This is a good opportunity to see the history of Maharashtra. The city is home to many sacred sites. The ancient fort dates back to the Tatvasaar era. The fort also has a number of shrines and holy books.

The fort is surrounded by natural caves. The biggest one is called the Nalichi Vaat, and it is located on the extreme right side of the mountain. The rocky patch is approximately 80 degrees in angle and is meant for the fittest and most experienced trekkers. There are many dhabas along the way to accommodate your party and enjoy the trek. You can also enjoy camping in the fort.

Many beautiful temples can be found along the trek trail. The Pushkarni and Kedareshwar caves are from the 6th century. The Harishchandraeshwar Temple is an outstanding example of the skilled artisans of that time. You will be astonished at the fine art stone carvings.

The Shiv Linga is protected by The Kedareshwar Cave, which is covered with water all year.

Saptateertha Pukarni, a lake east Harishchandraeshwar Temple, was once home to Lord Vishnus. They were originally built in the temple on the bank of the lake, but they were later moved to the caves. These caves are protected and maintained by the government of MH.

It is a perfect destination for trekking in the Sahyadris. There are ancient caves and ancient forts that are worth exploring. You can also learn about the Hindu myths and legends of the area.

The trek is open for all types of trekkers. Beginners can choose from two routes, Pachnai Village and Khireshwar, while pro-takers may prefer a more challenging route. Either way, both routes are scenic. While the journey is challenging, it is also an unforgettable experience for those who enjoy the outdoors. In fact, you’ll be awed by the beauty of this place on the map.

The Harishchandragad fort is located in the state of Maharashtra. This fort is a popular tourist destination, as it has multiple routes to choose from. The hike is easy for beginners, but there are also moderate and challenging treks. A beautiful, lush landscape makes the trek worth the effort. Several waterfalls along the way add to the beauty. You will enjoy fresh air and the sounds of chirping birds.

The fort is a historic site, and the ruins of ancient forts, ramparts, and temples are a highlight of this trek. You can also learn about the history of the fort as you walk through it. As you walk through the fort, you’ll also encounter some fascinating landscapes that are largely unexplored by most people. You’ll be surrounded by stunning views and awe-inspiring vistas as you climb uphill.

The Harishchandragad trek is a scenic and rewarding experience. The trek is steep and has loose rocks. You’ll need sturdy hiking shoes with a good grip. You’ll also need trekking poles. It’s a medium-level hike. The views are spectacular, and you’ll never regret going on this hike. It’s worth the effort. The 240-km journey from Pune to Khireshwar is about five hours.

The fourth highest peak in Maharashtra is Taramati / Taramanchi. It can be found at the Harishchandragad plateau. From here you have a great view of the Naneghat area and Murband.

Konkan region

The Konkan region of India is a beautiful coastal area that stretches from Thane in the north to Karwar in the south. The area is bordered by the Western Ghats to the east and the Arabian Sea to the west. The coastline is also a popular vacation destination. The region is home to some of the world’s best beaches. It is a great place to visit if you’re visiting the country.

The Kokan coastline is known for its natural beauty. The coast is home to age-old forts and dense forests. The region is also home to the Karnala Bird Sanctuary, which has a unique wildlife population. The beaches are beautiful and there are many places to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

A visit to Devgad is a must for the Konkanis, who have a rich history and a thriving economy. In addition to its fort and beaches, Devgad is famous for its Alphonso mangoes. You can also catch the sunrise at Tara Mumbri Beach, which is between Devgad and Kunkeshwar. You can also visit Kunkeshwar, an important pilgrimage center. The town’s silver-sand beach is a great place for sunset watching and sunbathing.

The small lake of Harishchandreshwar is a popular tourist spot. Once, a source of potable water, the water is now polluted due to trekkers and garbage. Today, the lake is not potable, but locals swim in it during monsoons and winters. The lake is also home to idols, including one carved into the rock. The temple used to have lakeside idols, but the locals have moved these to caves near the mountain.

The temple is surrounded by a waterfall and a cave. Inside the cave is a massive Shivling. It is surrounded by ice-cold water, and visitors can only enter the cave during the monsoon season. There is a small stream inside the cave that flows out of the waterfall during the rainy season. If you want to get closer to the heavenly body, you can also swim in the icy, bloodless stream.

A small river is located in the nearby town of Aravalli. The water from the spring is believed to have healing properties and is known as the Mangal Ganga. The shrines are situated on a hillside, and the water flows through a stream and a gorge that stretch into the temple. The river is also the source of the city’s drinking water. Its name, Saptathirtha, derives from its seven waters, or sapta (seven), is the name of the awe-inspiring mountainside.

Naneghat region from Taramati peak

The trek starts from Kalyan and passes through Nalasopara, Kalyan, and Junnar. The Naneghat pass was built in the pre-Christian era and is signposted all the way. From Taramati peak, it takes two to three hours to climb the mountain. There is a historical fort in the region, and a ruined monastery at the top.

The Naneghat pass is the 4th highest peak in Maharashtra. The route to Taramati peak is about two kilometers long, two kilometers wide, and 0.5 km long. On the way to the peak, you’ll pass several caves, some of which are used as accommodations. A beautiful view awaits you when you reach the top. The journey is quite challenging, and can be dangerous, but the reward is worth it!

You’ll be rewarded with views of the Naneghat plateau from the top of Taramati peak. The trek ends at Konkan Kada, a pristine lake where you can enjoy beautiful sunsets. While in the area, make sure to visit Kedareshwar cave, which features a huge Shiva Linga surrounded by water. You can also visit the nearby village of Banaskankar, which is home to the famous ruins of an ancient Hindu temple.

The Naneghat peak was once the fort of the local dynasty. In the 18th century, it was captured by Britishers, but its ruins still stand today. Visitors to the peak can see the Kothi pillars, which are huge masses carved out of rock. The largest one is carved in Brahmni script and is decorated with the Devnagri script. On the summit of Naneghat, you can visit the Taramati point, which is 1429 meters high and the highest in the area.

Saptatirtha Pushkarni

A beautiful little lake is located east of Harishchandreshwar Temple. It was once a potable water source. This once-potable source of water is now unusable due to trekkers throwing their trash in it. Also, plastic can’t be destroyed by sunlight so this water has lost its potability. It is unsuitable for drinking as locals swim there during monsoon season. Many lakeside idols were dedicated to Vishnu a few years back at Saptatirtha Pushkarni. These deities are now protected from the elements and tourists by being moved to nearby caves.

Lord Shiva installed a Linga at Saptatirtha Pushkarni after he completed the Archana there. It is the oldest temple in India and the most important one. The temple also contains the idol of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy, who is said to be the ‘Kshetra Palaka’. In the vicinity, there is a well in the shape of a stringed bow, called Rudra Tirtha.

Many caves can be found throughout the fort. Some caves are used as accommodation, while others are well maintained.

Kedareshwar Cave

The sanctity of the Kedareshwar Cave temple is unique and can’t be missed on a trip to Maharashtra. The temple is located inside a gigantic rock, and it is surrounded by four pillars. Each day, water seeps into the temple from its two entrances. The water is cold and continues to rise to waist level during the rainy season. Visitors can also stay in tents rented by local villagers.

The Kedareshwar Cave is a popular Hindu pilgrimage site in Maharashtra. It is located right next to the Kedareshwar temple, and the big Shivlinga is located inside. The water inside the cave is waist-deep, ice-cold, and contains several sculptures. Though the cave is accessible to tourists at all times, it’s best to avoid visiting it during monsoon season.

During the monsoon season, the water inside the cave turns fresh and luke-cold, making it ideal for bathing. The five-foot-tall Shiva linga is located in the center of the cave, and the surrounding water seeps in at the end of each Yuga. The chilly water inside the cave is a perfect setting for a relaxing visit to the temple. The temple is open from 6 AM to 8 PM, and is best visited between January and March. It is best not to visit the cave during monsoon season because the cave is very slippery during this time.

Caves on Harishchandragad

Harishchandragad fort has nine caves surrounding a Shiva Linga, one of which is knee-deep cold water. The river Mangal Ganga is believed to have originated from this cave. There are four pillars surrounding the Shiva Linga, three of which are broken. They are said to represent the four ‘Yugas’ and each pillar represents a different ‘Yuga’.

The most popular attraction of the Harishchandragad fort is the huge Shiva Linga, which is believed to be around 40 meters high. This sacred shrine is surrounded by four pillars that are said to represent the four ‘Yugas’ of life. The cliffs are approximately a mile long and a half, so it is a challenging trek. However, it is worth it for the spectacular views and lush greenery that you will enjoy while you’re there.

The Caves on Harishchandragaad is an excellent location to watch a sunset. The surrounding area is also home to many temples, and Pushkarni, as well as caves and other natural attractions.

Pachnai Village

Harishchandragad can be reached by following the route from Pachnai Village. The town is about one to two hours drive away. You should remember that there will be multiple bus stops along the way. Trek Routes of Harishchandgad Trek:

There are mainly three trek routes from where you can do trek.

You have many options to reach the top with the versatile Harishchandragad Trek. For beginners, the easiest and fastest trail starts from Pachnai. The picturesque Khireshwar route will suit experienced trekkers.

Walhivale/Belpada Village is the most difficult of all. Three separate routes lead to the Belpada, through Makad Naal and Nalichi Vaat. You can also choose to go through Sadhle Ghat or Bhailghat. These routes should only be chosen by experienced trekkers who are skilled in using equipment such as a rope and a carabiner.

We have mentioned all three trek routes details below.

1: Trek Route through Pachnai easier route to do Harishchandragad Fort Trek

If you have the time, you can trek to Harishchandragad Fort from the Pachnai route. This route is easy and is the most popular among hikers. You can use the Paachnaichi vaat path to reach the fort. This route will take you 2.5 to 3 hours to reach the fort. The route is accessible to people of all ages and physical condition. It is also recommended to hire a guide to accompany you.The trail starts at the Pachnai Village.

From Pune, you need to take the Pune-Alephata road. It will bring you to Sangamner and Alephata, and then take a bus to Pachnai village. From here, you can trek to the foothills of the fort.

To reach the fort from Pune, you can take a bus to Khireshwar Village via the Nalichi Vaat road. The bus from Pune leaves at 4:30 am, and you can take a taxi to Pachnai village in the evening. If you’re traveling by bus, you’ll need to pay a small fee.You can also hike to the Taramati peak.

If you are looking for a beautiful mountain view, you can take the Harishchandragad fort trek from Pachnai.

2: Trek Route through Nalichi Vaat:

The Nalichi Vaat is the challenging route to the fort, but it’s still technically demanding. A seasoned trekker can set up climbing gear for the entire group, setting it up in the base villages. During the climb, the team will encounter several challenging patches. The rocky terrain is steep in places, so you’ll need to take caution. But the views and the adventure are worth the effort.  And gets slippery during monsoon season. Because of this, the hike should not be attempted during peak monsoon.

This is one of the most difficult treks in the Western Ghats. If you’re looking for a tougher adventure, consider the Nalichi Vaat route. This path is characterized by steep, rocky sections. The Pachnai and Khireshwar trails are easy, but both routes will require technical support. If you’re not up for a lengthy trek, you can opt for the Nalichi Vaat route.

The Nalichi Vaat route is the most popular route. It’s an enduring and technical mountaineering journey that offers spectacular views. The mighty Karoli ghat is the most spectacular and dramatic section of the trip. The last 20 feet of the Nalichi Vaat are particularly challenging, so you’ll need to use climbing gear to get there. This stretch of the hike is steep, so you can’t expect a smooth ride.

If you’re looking for a more challenging trek, the Nalichi vaat route is the best choice. This route is considered to be the most challenging of all the routes in the Sahyadri Ranges. This gorge has rocky patches and technical climbing. The river is a bit of a challenge, but it’s not a hard walk.

Now Start The journey To Harishchandragad via Nalichi Vaat .

“Jungles and mountains are not like other spaces. To begin with, they are cubic. Their trees surround you, loom over you, press in from all sides. Woods choke off views & leave you muddled & without bearings. They make you feel small & confused & vulnerable, like a small child lost in a crowd of strange legs. Stand in a desert or prairie & you know you are in a big space. Stand in the woods and you only sense it. They are vast, featureless nowhere. And they are alive.”

after the lunch on Kokankada - Harishchandreshwar Temple we stared descending, climb down via Tolar khind - Back to Khireshwar Village (Another base Village).

“Hiking is a bit like life:

The journey only requires you to put one foot in front of the other…again and again and again.

And if you allow yourself the opportunity to be present throughout the entirety of the Harishchandragad trek,

you will witness beauty every step of the way,

not just at the summit”

Where to Stay If you want(In case):

There are lot of caves on Harishchandragad Fort behind Ganesh temple and in Harishchandreshwar temple so at the most more than 100 people can be easily accomodated plus there are 2-3 houses belonging to people of Pachnai village hence getting food and tea is not a problem. In the water tank at Harishchandreshwar temple, there is abundant crystal clear drinking water available.

Also at base village Pachnai there are few houses who can allow to accomodate if requested.

we did descending at night it was completely dark, but night is night you never get a chance to walk in this type of night so we had enjoyed a lot, the Harishchandragad trek became adventurous more than just trek because we were thinking of trek would completed during day light but we got late and some of new fellows were not carrying torch light, big lesson to them always carry lights during trek.(https://www.facebook.com/walkingsherpa/)

Photo of A walk in The Mountain:Trek to Harishchandragad via Nalichi Vaat. 69/70 by PANKAJ KUMAR

finally we reached to base village.we got our bus after some more walk at 1 am of Monday morning. In monsoon, proper care should be taken while trekking in the rockface after Tolar khind. It is advisable not to walk on the rock face in monsoon particularly during night where one can experience heavy rainfall with thunder strikes.

Harishchandragad is also known as trekker's paradise as rappelling, rock climbing & valley crossing can be done simultaneously in one trek itself. Harishchandragad is also famous as the best fort in Maharashtra for camping. There are nearly 9 caves in total inculding 2 big caves on Harishchandragad which can accomodate around 100-150 campers.

“Distance changes utterly when you take the world on foot. A mile becomes a long way, two miles literally considerable, ten miles whopping, fifty miles at the very limits of conception. The world, you realize, is enormous in a way that only you and a small community of fellow hikers know. Planetary scale is your little secret.

Life takes on a neat simplicity, too. Time ceases to have any meaning. When it is dark, you go to bed, and when it is light again you get up, and everything in between is just in between. It’s quite wonderful, really.

Keep close to Nature's heart... and break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.

“We don’t stop hiking because we grow old –

We grow old because we stop hiking.”

Keep hiking cheers!!!!

What’s life without adventure? Isn’t the real purpose of life to travel, to experience new places, and witness the sunrise from new mountaintops? This thought is what united Jatin and Tarun over a cup of chai, in spite of being from two unrelated backgrounds (CA and IT). They knew each other since the time Jatin was helping Tarun learn the ways of the wilderness through weekend treks and outings with another traveling group. Their love for traveling and trekking together motivated them to start something of their own. Thus was born “Plan The Unplanned”, where travel goals come true. Under the Companies Act, Plan The Unplanned is incorporated as Unplanned Journeys Private Limited They started their journey on unsteady ground, much like any other company, but they shared an infatuation for travel and adventure with their customers, which amplified their determination, and thus, Plan the Unplanned family keeps getting bigger every day! Just about any travel idea can come alive with Plan The Unplanned…treks, adventure activities like rock climbing, kayaking, rafting, backpacking trips across the country, cultural outings, photo walks; everything that fellow travelers need, to explore the great outdoors together. Well now that the wanderlust has kicked in and you can already see a vacation in your nearest future, here’s what we have to offer!

A Legacy of Fortification History

The fort is quite ancient. Remnants of Microlithic man have been discovered here. The various Puranas (ancient scriptures) like Matsyapurana, Agnipurana and Skandapurana include many references for Harishchandragad. Its origin is said to have been in the 6th century, during the rule of the Kalchuri dynasty. The citadel was built during this era. The various caves probably have been carved out in the 11th century. In these caves, idols of Lord Vishnu were carved. Though the cliffs are named Taramati and Rohidas.

Great sage Changdev (one who created the epic “Tatvasaar”), used to meditate here in the 14th century. The caves are from the same period. The various constructions on the fort and those existing in the surrounding region point to the existence of diverse cultures here. The carvings on the temples of Nageshwar (in Khireshwar village), in the Harishchandreshwar temple and the cave of Kedareshwar indicate that the fort belongs to the medieval period since it is related to Shaiva, Shakta or Naath.
