Savannah, GA Boat Tours

Two dolphins surfacing.

Boat tours of various types are available out of Savannah and the marshes and coast nearby.

Basic narrated river cruises up and down the Savannah River are the easiest to access from Savannah. Dolphin or sightseeing tours out of Savannah or Tybee Island are also available.

If you want to see more of the region’s landscape and nature a charter tour of the creeks and rivers between Savannah and Tybee Island or down the coast is worth considering, though this is usually a more expensive option than scheduled public tours.

Nature-oriented boat tours of the inland marshes near Savannah, around the Skidaway River and its larger creeks, are also available, mostly departing from either Isle of Hope or Thunderbolt. See Skidaway tours

Boat Trips To Georgia’s Barrier Islands

The three major barrier islands south of Tybee – Little Tybee, Wassaw and Ossabaw – are readily accessible as a day trip from the Savannah-Tybee region. As none of the islands have road access, a boat (or kayak, or paddleboard) is the only way to get there.

The pristine nature reserve of Little Tybee Island is the easiest to get to, a short boat ride south of Tybee. Several boat excursions are available, either touring the island and exploring its creeks (when tides allow) to see dolphins and birds, or landing, with time on the island’s secluded beaches to relax or look for shells. See Little Tybee boat tours

Further afield are Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge, and Ossabaw Island, the latter privately managed as a nature reserve and cultural site. The large publicly-accessible portion of Wassaw offers beautiful beaches and hiking trails through the island’s forested ridge, and most boat excursions will allow time to venture on land. See boat trips to Wassaw Island

The situation at Ossabaw is slightly more complicated. The beach is accessible to all, with many boat tours touring the island or landing only on these public areas. Access to the interior is controlled by the Ossabaw Island Foundation, and must be arranged either directly with them or via a tour guide, who will arrange access on your behalf. More about visiting Ossabaw Island, and details of available boat tours

The 5-hour tour is hands down the best way to spend a day! They have a private island with tons of fun things to do! We’ve done this twice this year and both captains we had were amazing!

I took the Wildlife Refuge Excursion with Capt. Peter Pearson. If you are looking for a small boat tour, this is it. We spent 3 hours on the water. After turning at Fort Jackson and going under the first bridge, we didn't see another boat until about 15 minutes before returning to the dock. It is so peaceful and beautiful cruising through the wildlife refuge. Captain Peter has a good eye and was able to help me see the wildlife that I probably would have missed if he hadn't pointed them out. He is very friendly and knowledgeable about the river. I highly recommend this trip!

Celebrating our 15th Anniversary in Savannah we decided to take the Outside Outback tour to explore more. Non-swimmer & adventurer, I surprisingly dropped all my fears and had an amazing experience on the water. It was BREATH TAKING! Captain Boo had a great sense of humor and was very knowledgeable and charismatic. I can’t imagine it going so well without him.

First let me say, we are residents of Savannah and in the hospitality industry too. Hubby and I had a Monday off and had been very interested in our local port. We NEVER get tired of seeing these large container ships making their way down the Savannah River. Peter was our guide and absolutely incredible! We were able to learn so much about our local port, how important the port is to our local and national economy, and how complex this entire system is! Another plus we didn't expect? Seeing a baby sea turtle in the river, along with a bald eagle and other wildlife. We are now referring this tour to our neighbors, visitors, and family. Even the little ones will love this tour. One of the best tours EVER in Savannah! Book it now! You won't be disappointed!

We took the 7-hour Ultimate Lowcountry Day. Captain Peter made sure we had a great day from the time he picked us up at the port to when he dropped us off. Seeing the dolphins was very high on my priority list and Captain Peter knew exactly where to take us. Boy did he come through! We probably saw 20-30 dolphins with many of them up close. He also made sure my kids had a great time including tubing, kayaking, and jumping off a platform. He made sure we were all safe and still made it so much fun for them. Overall, this is a tour I’d highly recommend to anybody!

Boo was very informative and patient with our group. We were impressed by his knowledge of local history and his humorous and engaging manner. We all greatly enjoyed the tour of Daufuskie Island and would highly recommend this company and captain.

I loved this tour! Such a cool way to see the city. Going into the port, seeing all the big ships, and learning more about their operations was fascinating. My tour guide Ryan Pirkle was very informative. I have been on many tours in Savannah but he definitely taught me things I had never learned about Savannah in any other tours. Plus it was great to get out on the water to beat the heat. I highly recommend this tour!

Meet the Belles

The Savannah Belles Ferry fleet includes four distinct vessels named for noteworthy women from Savannah’s history: the Juliette Gordon Low , the  Susie King Taylor , the  Florence Martus and the Mary Musgrove .

Juliette Gordon Low

Juliette Gordon Low (1860-1927) founded the first American Girl Scout troops in 1912 in her hometown of Savannah. The Girl Scouts are committed to promoting strong leadership and decision-making skills among young women.

Susie King Taylor

Susie King Taylor (1848-1912) lived in Savannah and gained her freedom from slavery at age 14. She contributed to Civil War efforts by serving as a nurse to the black soldiers and by teaching them to read and write. She opened one of Savannah’s first schools for African-American children.

Florence Martus

Florence Martus (1868-1943), known in Savannah as the ‘Waving Girl,’ was the daughter of an ordnance sergeant at Fort Pulaski who took it upon herself to become the unofficial greeter of ships into Savannah. Legend has it that not a single ship came into port without her waving her white handkerchief or lantern at it during a 44 year span. Her statue continues to greet visitors to the port from Morrell Park on the riverfront.

Mary Musgrove

Mary Musgrove (1700-1765), a Native American, served as an interpreter for General Oglethorpe during the founding of Savannah. She played a crucial role in negotiations with Tomochichi and the Creek Indians, convincing them to peacefully accept the new colony in their territory.

9 Epic Hilton Head Boat Tours to try This Year

  • HILTON HEAD , LOWCOUNTRY
  • by Erin Clarkson

Side view of a sailboat as it sails towards the setting sun near Hilton Head

Planning a trip to Hilton Head Island and hoping to spend some time on the water? These Hilton Head boat tours are a fun way to do just that!

There are plenty of options to choose from, ranging from family-friendly dolphin tours to romantic sunset cruises to action-packed shark adventures.

You can even charter a private yacht or rent a pontoon for the day!

Side view of a sailboat as it sails towards the setting sun near Hilton Head

Note: This guide contains affiliate links to my trusted travel partners.

In a hurry? These are three of the most popular options: This sunset dolphin tour departs out of Harbour Town Marina, so you’ll get to see the Harbor Town Lighthouse, the Haig Point Lighthouse, and the beautiful Calibogue Sound. It’s fun for all ages! Argggg Matey! This pirate ship cruise also departs out of Harbour Town Marina and is the top option for young kids. This beachcombing tour on a disappearing island departs out of Palmetto Bay Marina and is another fun one for families with children.

Hilton Head Boat Tour Parking Tips (Don’t Skip!)

Parking is the most important part of making it to your boat tour on time, so don’t skip over my tips in this section!!

The majority of the island’s boat tours originate from one of three areas: Palmetto Bay Marina, Broad Creek Marina at Shelter Cove, or Harbour Town Marina at Sea Pines.

  • Palmetto Bay Marin a is the easiest to access and the area doesn’t have many parking issues. If the marina parking lot is full, there’s plenty of overflow parking at the nearby boat ramp under the Cross Island Expressway. Plan to arrive at the Palmetto Bay Marina at least 20 minutes before your tour’s departure time.
  • Shelter Cove Marina also has plenty of parking, but you may have a bit of a walk to get to the boats. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before the tour departure time.
  • Harbour Town Marina at Sea Pines has the worst parking issues. If you aren’t staying in Sea Pines, make note that there’s a $9 entry fee per vehicle to enter the community and that parking is very scarce during peak tourism season. Once you pay to enter Sea Pines, I suggest parking in the Sea Pines trolley pickup area (it’ll be on your left, within a half-mile of the entry gate) and taking the free trolley to get to the marina. The marina has valet parking, as well — but even the valet lot fills up! The valet fee ranges between $10 – $20.

Insider Tip: During peak tourism season (May – September), it’s best to arrive at the Sea Pines gate at least an hour prior to the start of your boat tour to ensure you have plenty of time to board the boat. There are plenty of things to see and do in the area while you wait!

Sunset Dolphin Tours

Ideal for: Everyone! Book it Now: Try the most popular option or my personal favorite View More Options: HHI Dolphin Tours

Hilton Head Island is an awesome destination for dolphin watching! That’s because approximately 400 Atlantic bottlenose dolphin live in the surrounding waters.

That means your chances of spotting a pod during your tour are pretty darn good. I’ve been on many HHI dolphin tours through the years, and I’ve spotted them every single time.

Because they’re so playful and inquisitive, it’s very common for dolphin to swim alongside the boat or leap out of the water. You should be able to get a good look at them.

My personal favorite Hilton Head dolphin tours are the sunset dolphin cruises — especially the smaller, private ones that operate out of less-busy marinas, like this one . The views in the Calibogue Sound are incredible!

Sunset dolphin tours typically last one and a half hours, and the larger boats usually have restrooms on board. A few of the tours even include drinks.

Photo Tip: In addition to photographing the dolphins, make sure you have your camera ready to capture the beautiful Haig Point Lighthouse on Daufuskie Island! You’ll cruise right past it.

Private Sunset Cruise

Ideal for: Families or Couples Book it Now: Most popular option View More Options: Sunset cruises

This is a great idea for a date, honeymoon activity, or even a proposal!

You can opt for a variety of sunset cruises on Hilton Head, from sunset dinner cruises to happy hour boat tours to the popular sunset dolphin cruises mentioned above.

Make sure you read the descriptions carefully, since some sunset cruises are private and others are group tours.

Pirate Ship Adventure

Ideal for: Kids Book the Harbour Town Marina (Sea Pines) Option: Black Dagger Book the Palmetto Bay Marina Option: Black Sparrow

This option is perfect for the younger kids! They can become a pirate for the day and go exploring to hunt for treasure in the Calibogue Sound.

Kiddos get decked out in pirate gear and receive pirate training from the crew before boarding the pirate ship. The training helps prepare them for what’s to come — the treasure hunt!

The crew of little adventurers will follow the pirate map they’ve been given and must defeat Stinky Pete — the stinkiest pirate on the island — to retrieve a key he has brazenly stolen.

From there, it’s a race to secure the treasure before Stinky Pete makes off with it himself!

The most exciting part of the adventure is when the little pirates all get the opportunity to spray Stinky Pete with their water cannons as he floats past them in his dinghy.

Overall, this is one of the best options on the entire island if you have little ones aged 3-10.

A male and female dressed in pirate gear grin at the camera while standing on a dock with a pirate ship visible in the background

Insider Tip: If your kids fall in love with all things pirate-related, I suggest taking them to Lowcountry Celebration Park near Coligny Beach afterwards so they can play on the cool pirate ship playground!

Vanishing Island Adventure

Ideal for: Families with Children Book it Now: Group tour or a private beachcomber tour

It makes me giggle a little that this tour has gotten so popular, but it’s currently one of the top things to do in Hilton Head !

The island is nothing more than a sandbar that’s exposed during low tide and then disappears when the tide comes in. (Sometimes it’s called the Disappearing Island, as well.)

Kids love the mystique of it all, though, so that’s why it’s so popular!

As a bonus, there’s a decent chance you’ll spot dolphin on your way to and from the island (aka: sandbar 😂).

Once you get there, you can hunt for shells, starfish, shark teeth, and sand dollars.

Make note that it’s illegal to keep live sand dollars, but your guide can help you spot the differences between the live and dead ones.

When they’re alive, sand dollars are a greenish-brown color and have tiny little hair-like tentacles. The dead ones are usually bleached white.

Insider Tip: Plan to spend approximately 3 hours on the trip. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, and bring water and snacks. You might also want to include water shoes, towels, sunglasses, and a hat.

Private Sailboat Cruises

Ideal for: Couples

A private tour in a sailboat is one of the most peaceful ways to explore Hilton Head’s salt marshes and tidal creeks. It’s also one of the best ways to personalize your experience!

With a private cruise, you’ll only share the boat with your own group, so the trip feels more intimate.

Some guides are even ok with you packing a picnic and a bottle of wine to enjoy during the outing. (I would definitely suggest asking first to make sure it’s ok, though.)

As with all of the other Hilton Head boat tours, there’s a great chance you’ll spot a pod of dolphin frolicking in the water during your outing, so be sure to keep an eye out.

If you leave out of Sea Pines, there’s even an option to sail aboard the Stars and Stripes — a boat that competed in the America’s Cup race!

Insider Tip: If you’re thinking of proposing (or already did and are honeymooning on the island), a private sailboat cruise is one of the most romantic things to do on Hilton Head .

Rent a Pontoon Boat

Ideal for: Families, Friends Groups Book it Now: Pontoon Rentals

Want to be the boss of the boat? Try heading out for a relaxing cruise on a pontoon that you operate yourself. You can rent one for a half-day outing and customize your own itinerary.

To operate the pontoon, you must be a minimum of 18 years old, hold a valid driver’s license, and have prior boating experience. Pontoons can hold up to 10 people.

When picking up the boat, you’ll be given a professional orientation so you can learn how to best navigate the tidal creeks surrounding Hilton Head Island.

The cost of the rental doesn’t include fuel, so you’ll be asked to pay based on usage once the trip ends.

Explore Skull Creek, see Daufuskie Island, or even venture over to the swanky Palmetto Bluff area.

Red pontoon with a tan cover docked at Palmetto Bay Marina on Hilton Head Island. Small craft with yellow hulls and blue hulls are docked in the background

Take a Ferry to Daufuskie Island

Ideal for: Families, history buffs, nature lovers Book it Now: Take the ferry or a private boat + tour combo

If you’re interested in seeing Daufuskie Island, you can take a ferry over to explore it or venture out on a private boat.

The ferries take about 45 minutes, and you’ll enjoy the beautiful views of the coastline and salt marshes on your way there.

Once on the island, the best way to get around is via golf cart. There are 4 or 6-seater rental options.

Daufuskie isn’t crowded at all, so the island makes a nice escape when Hilton Head’s beaches get a little too busy.

You can take guided tours while you’re on Daufuskie Island, too, so keep that in mind.

The top tour I recommend is the Daufuskie Gullah Heritage Tour with Sallie Ann Robinson. It’s so important to support the island’s dwindling Gullah community and learn about the culture first hand.

The Haig Point III cruises into Harbour Town Marina in Hilton Head with a full load of passengers after one of their daytime boat tours

Insider Tip: You might want to pack water and snacks, since there aren’t many places to eat on Daufuskie Island. Don’t forget reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses, and towels (if you plan to swim).

Cruise on Over to Savannah

One of the most relaxing ways to take a day trip to Savannah from Hilton Head Island is by boat.

You’ll get to enjoy the beautiful Lowcountry scenery and will have an excellent chance of spotting dolphin along the route.

The ride takes approximately 2 hours each way, so be sure to pack sunscreen and a hat.

There are plenty of incredible things to do in Savannah , from admiring the architecture throughout the Historic District to visiting one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world to posing in front of the iconic fountain in Forsyth Park .

For convenience, I suggest taking a Savannah trolley tour while you’re there so you can get a broad overview of the city’s history while letting someone else handle all of the driving.

Hilton Head Boat Tours: Summary

As you can tell, there are a wide variety of boat tours you can take, whether you want to keep the kids entertained or are planning a romantic getaway on the water.

The most popular Hilton Head boat tours are the sunset dolphin tours, trips to the disappearing island, and the pirate ship adventures.

If you have questions about any of these Hilton Head boat tours, please let me know in the comments below.

Frankie Capan III shoots 58 on Korn Ferry Tour, breaks Scottie Scheffler's course record in process

It's going to be a Thursday to remember for Frankie Capan III.

The 24-year-old shot 13-under 58 during the first round of the Korn Ferry Tour's Veritex Bank Championship at Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington, Texas. The round included seven straight birdies on the back nine, a 29 on both sides and taking down World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler's course record, which he set May 3, 2020.

His round started with a par before four consecutive birdies on Nos. 2-5. He added an eagle at the par-5 ninth to turn in 6-under 29.

On the back nine, the circles added up.

One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven in a row before he finally made par at the par-4 17th. On the closing par-5 18th, his tee shot ended up in the fairway bunker, and he was unable to card another birdie for a 57.

Guess a 58 will have to do.

Texas Rangers Golf Club is a par-71 layout measuring 7,010 yards.

In February, Cristobal Del Solar became the first player in the history of professional golf to shoot 57 on a par-70 layout . Capan's round is the 13th sub-60 score in Korn Ferry Tour history.

In 2019,  David Carey shot 11-under 57 on the Alps Tour at the Cervino Open .

With a pair of top-10 finishes coming into the Veritex Bank Championship, Capan was finding his rhythm. Hard to imagine he pictured a start like he put together Thursday.

He allowed people to participate at the helm or operate the winches and he kept us entertained with his stories. My 82 year old mom loved it and they were very accommodating to her, as it was difficult for her to sit on a cushion on the deck. There was a small area where four or five people could dangle their legs and she was all set. Everyone on the boat was very happy and it was a beautiful evening. We saw dolphins, pelicans, and tarpons. The sunset was beautiful, and we also saw the full moon over the Lighthouse. We look forward to doing this again next time we visit! • ChildOfTheSixties 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Lousy signage to find the boat... and only one dolphin :( I can't fault Vagabond for the cold and windy weather or only one dolphin at the beginning of the trip BUT I can wag my finger at them for the absolutely lousy signage and instructions for finding the boat. We put the address in our GPS and we were brought to the end of a road with no indication where the boat was or where to park for it.. On top of that, it was an extremely busy Sunday and there was no parking to be found anywhere near the end of Lighthouse Road. We parked a good 20 minute walk away but even on foot were unable to find anyone who knew what we were talking about. By chance my husband noticed a small kiosk with "Vagabond" written on it. Within were three giggly teens who could have cared less that we were waiting to talk to them. They checked the tickets I had on my phone and pointed in the direction of where we had originally driven. When we asked for more specific instructions, one sighed and said they would walk us there. Once at the water there were NO signs that this was where our boat was docked. (Would it have killed them to have a "Vagabond" sign somewhere??) The only sign was a small 6" x 6" sign on a vertical pole that said "all boats," Once on that, we still didn't know exactly where to go but kept going until the very very end was a boat that had "Vagabond" written on its side, but of course this boat was blocked by other bigger boats. There wasn't even a banner or flag on the boat to indicate "Vagabond." By this time we were getting close to boarding, which was fine except the instructions said to arrive an hour early, and we were way past that. Of course the cold and seeing only one dolphin didn't help to make the trip rewarding. The captain was as nice and friendly as could be and he couldn't have been faulted for any of this. • ks12 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles A mostly enjoyable evening cruise… Everything about this cruise was excellent except the food. We were greeted by a friendly and courteous crew and shown to our white tablecloth table. The service was attentive and efficient, as in any fine restaurant. The boat itself was impeccably clean. Carpets and upholstered chairs were clean and everything appeared freshly painted. The food, however, was less than average. We expected a much better dinner. The salad was unimpressive, the main entree was served barely warm, and the pork loin was so tough it could almost not be cut. The key lime dessert was very good, though. This would be a five star activity had the food been much better. Read more Written February 2, 2024

Zurich Classic of New Orleans, PGA Tour, Mark Hubbard, Ryan Brehm

Two duos went low at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans as Patton Kizzire and his partner Ben Kholes are tied with Mark Hubbard and Ryan Brehm.

Each team fired off bogey-free 11-under 61s to lead by one shot over three teams at 10-under, as of this writing.

Kizzire and Kholes made six birdies on the front nine to make the turn in 30 shots. Coming home, they added four birdies between holes 10-14. The duo birdied the 18th to come home in 31 strokes to cap off a strong first round.

“Well, we came out of the gates both playing really well, both birdieing the same holes. Ideally, we’d like to mix it up. But we started well and just kept it going,” Kizzire said. “Whenever one of us needed the other, we stepped up and ham-and-egged it. He was a fantastic partner. I needed him out there, and he stepped up.”

Both have played at the Zurich Classic, but it is their first time together.

“It’s pretty fun just getting out here, and like he said, having a partner. Not something we get to do hardly ever. It’s fun kind of leaning on someone else and having that camaraderie out there,” Kholes said.

Day 2 will feature a new format in Alternate-shot, which can be difficult. However, for this duo, the game plan will remain the same.

“Just trying to put ourselves in the best spots that we can and picking each other up when something doesn’t go right,” Kholes said. “That’s all you can do. Just stay in the moment and hit the best shot you can at each point, and we’ll see where that puts us.”

They were not the only players to find success; they matched Hubbard and Brehm for the low round of the day.

Teams that also performed well in the Four-Ball format on Thursday were Davis Thompson and Andrew Novak, who posted a 10-under 62.

One of the Canadian duos, Corey Conners and Taylor Pendrith, are two shots back after they carded a 9-under 63. Will Zalatoris and Sahith Theegala finished Day 1 with a 7-under 65.

The betting favorites coming into the week , Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, settled for a 7-under 65 to sit four shots behind the leaders.

The afternoon wave got a little more wind on the golf course than the morning groups, but a few groups were poised to go low. Keith Mitchell and Joel Dahmen are 7-under through 11 holes. Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry are also 7-under through 10 holes to start the back nine.
