39 Best Norwegian Cruise Tips and Hacks in 2024

Norwegian Cruise Tips and Hacks

The more you cruise, the more cruising tips you will find out: some help you save money, others help you get free onboard credit, but most of them help you have a better experience on board. Each cruise line has its own secrets and there is no reason to find them out by yourself. I have recently cruised on a Norwegian Cruise and I am happy to share everything that I learned! And whether you’re a first-time cruiser or cruise every year, you might find there’s something here you don’t already know.

Before Booking the Cruise: Norwegian Cruise Tips for First-Timers

1. sign up for the norwegian cruiselines newsletter.

Norwegian Cruise Newsletter

Before booking, sign up for the Norwegian Cruiselines Newsletter to be notified of special offers.  (you can sign up for other cruise lines to keep your options open!) Each email will include any available discounts and specials available.

2. Use Kayak to Compare Cruises

Before I book the cruise, I always check a travel search website, like Kayak to compare cruise prices. Check and compare all cruise lines before you book!

3. Remember, Not all Cruise Ships are the Same

Not all Cruise Ships are Created Equal

There are 17 ships in Norwegian’s fleet, and they’re all different. Check out what’s offered on your ship before you board. For example, the Norwegian Escape (a newer ship) has a rope course and water slides, while older ships have fewer entertainment options. A pretty easy rule to go by: longer cruises have bigger and larger ships, while shorter cruises are smaller.

  • Don’t know if you’d prefer a small or a large ship? Large ships usually offer more entertainment options and more things to do, however they can be also more crowded. So, if you would prefer to have a more intimate experience, you would enjoy a smaller ship more. Neither one is better or worse, just depends on what you prefer!

4. Score the “Free at Sea” offers

Free at Sea Offers

NCL often runs “Free at Sea” offers, so if you see a countdown on your site, don’t worry, they are probably not going anywhere soon. Don’t feel pressured, but you should take advantage of them: depending on the promotion and the room category you book, you can get several free offers per cruise. They typically include a free Beverage Package, free Specialty Dining Package, free Wifi Package or a cruise excursion credit. Some of them come with free flights and if you pairing some of them together, it can add up to huge savings!

Note: if you get a beverage package or the specialty dining, tips will automatically be added to your price, so don’t be surprised that your price goes up by a few hundred dollars. It can still be worth it. If you get excursion credit or free flights, the price shouldn’t change.

5. Like Travel Hacking? Get a new Credit Card to Pay for the Cruise and Get Miles

Before I buy a big trip, I usually check new credit card offers for bonus miles. If you collect miles and points, there is an awesome signup offer to Get 40,000 Bonus Miles from Delta! And I have the card review here.

6. Book Your Cruise Last-Minute

If you book a cruise about 3 months before sailing, you can find great discounts. People cancel and cruise lines want to fill these rooms, so you may be able to take advantage of being flexible.

7. Set Price Drop Alerts

I always recommend this one. Before you book your cruise, you can monitor the prices by putting in your sail date on Cruiseline.com. You’ll automatically get an email if the price rises or falls more than one percent.

8. Book a Repositioning Cruise

When ships are being relocated, you can usually find good discounts on rooms. Just remember that the ship will disembark at a different port, so you will need to book airfare back. (May or may not be worth it)

9. Pricing (and Number of Kids) Depends on the Time of Year

Cruise trips will be a lot cheaper when school is in session. So, if you don’t depend on the school calendar, you can definitely save some money. Also I have heard a lot of people complain about too many kids on the cruise, but they traveled during school breaks. Here is my pick: cruising after Thanksgiving but before Christmas is a great time – cruises are usually cheaper, your hometown is getting cold and there are not so many kids in the pool!

10. Book your Next Cruise Onboard

I know this works on Norwegian, especially in the last few days of your cruise. If you book your next cruise while on the ship through a Cruise Consultant, you can get a discount and an on-board credit.

Note: If you don’t know when you want to cruise again, you can just book a Future Booking and just do a minimum deposit. That deposit is refundable if you change your mind. This year on Norwegian Escape , they were offering $400 of onboard credit for booking your next cruise.

Cruise prices can vary drastically week from week, so search multiple weeks to find the best price.

11. do your research before you cruise.

I know, cruises offer so much and you kind of want to go with the flow, but doing some research before even booking a cruise can help you have a better experience. Start by comparing cruises to find one that will work for you. Read as much as you can about your ship and excursions before your cruise. Otherwise, you can end up on a small ship without the slightest clue of what to do in any of the ports.

  • In terms of port info, cruise lines rarely give enough information apart from the cruise excursions, you should do extra research beforehand.
  • On my recent trip to Costa Maya , the excursion I planned got canceled and I had to pick out a new one on the spot! I wish I had done some more research!

  • Grand Cayman

After You Book: Planning Your Cruise on Norwegian

12. get to know freestyle cruising.

That’s what Norwegian Cruiselines are all about: instead of having a set dining time for each evening, you can go to the restaurant whenever you want. That being said, you can end up with a wait at peak times, so if you know in advance what time you would like to eat, make a reservation to save some time. (Especially if you are cruising as a larger group.)

Note: You can use the flat-screen TVs on the ship to see which restaurants are open and the approximate wait times.

13. Norwegian Cruise Cabin Hacks

  • More Space for Clothes: Cruise ship cabins tend to be low on hanging space – create more hanging space with strong magnetic hooks!
  • Organize Small Items: Use an over the door hanging organizer for all your personal products like sun lotion, medications, hair products and more
  • Keep Up with Your Documents: If you have tickets for shore excursions and other important papers, put them in a legal size envelope to keep track of them
  • Dirty Clothes: Put dirty clothes away in a travel laundry bag
  • Keep Your Things Dry: Bring a couple of ziplock bags. They can keep your passports dry if you need to take them with you at a cruise port. You just never know when you need them!
  • Keep Your Valuables Safe: Keep your jewelry, wallet, cash, passports, and keys in the safe
  • Bring a cruise-approved power strip if you need more than a couple of outlets
  • Bring Poo-Pourri to never be embarrassed about going to the bathroom
  • Decorate your door so that you can easily find it and have fun with kiddos!

14. Packing for a Cruise

If you’re going to cruise in the Caribbean, you need to know a few of these packing tips. On our last cruise, it rained a few times, so one of the must-pack items is always a lightweight waterproof jacket.

I wrote this great Packing Cruise Checklist that will give you more information about packing and things that you wish you had on your cruise. (You can also edit it and print it out for yourself!)

Among other tips in this article, here are a few items I always recommend taking on-board:

  • Reusable Water Bottle – you will be able to refill your bottle on the top deck and you won’t have to pay for expensive water in your stateroom (about $4 per bottle).
  • A Vacation Lanyard – It’s a lot easier to keep up with your key if you have a lanyard with you. They are a lot more expensive on the ship, so you can grab them from Amazon for your whole family or look for an old one at home.
  • Waterproof Phone Pouch –  a must for taking pictures near the water and on the beach – just hang it on your neck.
  • Water Shoes – This one would be great when we went horse-back riding on the beach! And I am sure there could be a few other uses for these!
  • Cover-up: If you’re spending the afternoon around the pool you’ll need something to use when you go in for lunch. The ships really crank up the AC, so you’ll want a cover-up that’s not wet.

For more things to grab with you on your cruise, check out the Bring It On a Cruise list . It has all of the things I wish I had on a cruise last time I went, make sure to have them!

15. pack your cruise carry-on bag:.

This one is a big one! At the cruise dock, you’ll give your large suitcases to the porter who will check them for you. You can carry on a small bag and personal items and you might not receive your checked bags until later in the evening after they are scanned for security. That’s why you should pack everything you may need on the first day in your carry-on:

documents, wallets, bathing suits, cameras, medications, sandals, sunscreen, a change of summer clothes and toiletries.

If the cruise line takes a while to deliver your bag, you’ll have all your necessities on hand and can change into more comfortable clothing.

16. What to Wear on a Cruise

What to Wear on a Cruise

While you are packing, you might want some ideas on what to wear on your vacation. Are you wondering how many swimsuits should you bring? Or what should you wear on an excursion? All of those questions might come up while you are packing. If you are still unsure or are afraid to forget anything, check my Cruise Clothing Guide !

17. Book Your Activities and Shows Early

Book Your Activities and Shows Early

Another big one for Norwegian! Do you want to have dinner at a specialty restaurant or go to a specific show? You should schedule it in advance online to make sure you get a space. By booking excursions early you can also save some money through early-bird discounts. But on Norwegian, you should book on-board activities too. I was disappointed to find out that some of the tastings and shows were all booked by the second day of the cruise!

18. Download the NCL App

With the NCL app, you can text your fellow travelers, check the daily schedule and deck plans, track how much you spend (or earn if you are lucky in the casino), and get info for upcoming ports of call. The app is free to download and you can chat with any of your friends on-board for just $9! It is totally worth it!

Note: I found it easier to book things through the TVs on the ship instead of the app.

19. Buy Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is something you don’t think about until you need it. It costs a fraction of your cruise price and delivers protection against delays, cancellations, lost baggage, and injury. Read your policy thoroughly. Check out options from third-party travel insurance companies like travelguard.com .

20. Watch your balance

It can be hard to keep up with all of the charges, but there were a couple of unexpected charges on my recent cruise and I went to the front desk to discuss them. Always good to keep an eye out on it!

21. Avoid Extra Expenses

All the extra expenses such as trips to Starbucks or ice cream shops can add up quickly.  Also, think about if you REALLY need to take part in that art auction or a jewelry sale. You can spend a little or a lot and still have a great time on your cruise!

22. Get to Know Your Ship

Get to Know Your Ship

Beautiful big ships like Norwegian Escape always have a lot going on. On the first couple of days, take some time to explore the ship, find your way around so that you’re on time for any activities you have planned. And if you’re ever turned around, don’t forget this simple rule – fish on the carpet are always swimming in the direction of the ship, follow the fish to the front of the ship!

fish on the carpet in Norwegian cruise line ships

23. Turn off Your Cell-phone Data (and your phone)

If you keep your cellphone on during the cruise, ensure that data has been turned OFF. If you leave data on, your phone will constantly be searching for a signal, losing battery and might be adding some costs! I left the phone in a safe this entire cruise and loved it!

24. Norwegian Cruise Line Holds Funds on your Card

Don’t be alarmed when you get charges on your card the first day of your cruise! On my recent seven-night cruise, Norwegian held $200 per person from our credit card. By the end of the cruise it was balanced out and the hold was lifted. Norwegian does that to encourage you to spend that money on-board and most people do! Be sure to budget well before your trip and monitor your expenses!

25. Gratuities on a Norwegian Cruise

The amount is automatically added to your account daily, but it can be changed at the guest services desk on the last day of your cruise.

Norwegian recommends $15 per person, per day, for gratuities. This amount is divided between dining room services, cabin services and alternative services, which include kitchen, entertainment, guest services and other hotel services. The amount is automatically added to your account daily, but it can be changed at the guest services desk on the last day of your cruise. Visit guest services the last day of sailing and decide what amount of tip you would like to leave. Don’t forget that a 15 percent gratuity is automatically added to bar bills and spa treatments!

26. Be Adventurous

On our last cruise on Norwegian Escape , there were a few adventurous activities: rope course and zip line on the ship (so cool!) and waterslides that looked terrifying! But I am so glad I tried those – it was my first time on a rope course and it was a lot of fun! If something seems a little scary, go outside of your comfort zone and try it – it makes great memories and fun stories! But, always be careful, of course!

27. Find a Quiet Spot

Find one of the quiet zones

All of Norwegian ships have designated “quiet zones”. If you want a break to relax and read a book, find one of those areas – no one knows about these spots and they’re almost always empty. There is almost always one on the promenade deck (deck 5, 6, or 7) and on the very top of the ship. If you prefer a quiet sail-away, check out these spots!

28. Watch Sunset While on the Ship

While you are doing all of the fun activities on the ship, don’t miss the sunsets! Sunsets are even more beautiful when you are on a cruise ship – go outside, have a drink on the pool deck, take your time to enjoy the waves and the views!

29. Don’t miss the shows

The shows on cruise ships are amazing. There are usually a variety of shows that are suitable for all ages.

Bonus Tip: Show up to sold-out shows

Some of the shows may be already sold out, do try to reserve them early. If you want to see one of the big-name shows on Norwegian, but the tickets are sold out, get in line prior to showtime, cruise ship staff will let you in if seats are available.

Extra Bonus Tip: Go to the Open-Seating Shows Early

A lot of the shows on the Norwegian cruise ships are popular, so get there 30 to 45 minutes early to ensure a seat.

30. Take Advantage of Kids Clubs

If your child is 3 – 17, take advantage of the FREE kid’s clubs. It’s a great way to let the kids play and meet other children!

31. Not Everything on the Ship is Too Expensive

Not Everything on the Ship is Too Expensive

T-shirts, alcohol, perfume, handbags, and hats are actually cheaper on board! There are a lot of sales going on! If you are already planning to buy any of these, wait until you are on-board and see if you like anything. However, if you would like to purchase a phone charger or flip-flops that you forgot at home, you might be out of luck! This time, they didn’t have either of those in the shops! Make a list of things to pack for your cruise so that you have everything you need on your vacation!

32. Consider a Photo Package

Photographers are all over the ship to take pictures of guests throughout the cruise. While purchasing individual prints can get pricey, photo packages can help you reduce the cost.

33. Don’t Forget Your Watch and Know Your Time Zone

It’s really important to pay attention to ship time (bringing a watch might help). You may change time zones during your cruise and your cellphone may not always keep up. Make sure to always be back on the ship on time, it won’t wait for you.

What time should you be back?   Take a picture of the “all aboard time” with your phone in case you forget what time you’re supposed to be back!

Norwegian Cruise Tips for Dining – How to Get the Best Food Experience on the Ship

How to Get the Best Food Experience on the Ship

One of the best experiences on the cruise is the wonderful food that you can try. One of my favorite moments was going to the dining room in the evenings – the food is a lot better than at the buffet and then for a late-night snack at the O’Sheehans. Here are a few of my favorite Norwegian Cruise dining tips!

34. On Boarding Day, Have Lunch at the Dining Room

On boarding day, the main buffet can get crowded because that is where the majority of cruisers head when they board the ship. What many people don’t know is that there are usually multiple eateries open on embarkation day. Check the daily program or ask a crew member what venues are open for lunch. You’ll enjoy your first day so much better by dining in a relaxed atmosphere after boarding the ship.

35. Try Everything and Enjoy as Much as You Want

Many first time cruisers don’t realize that they aren’t limited to just one appetizer, entree or dessert during dinner. So, if you’re having trouble deciding between two dishes —order both. And if you can’t decide which dessert you like the best, go ahead and order two. One of the many perks of cruising customizing your meals exactly how you want. That’s what the Freestyle Cruising is all about.

Bonus tip:   The Chef Can Make Any Appetizer into an Entrée

If you really like an appetizer, you can request it as your main course. Don’t feel weird about doing that, it’s totally fine!

36. Find Your Favorite Breakfast Option

Find Your Favorite Breakfast Option

There a few great options for your morning meal on the ship. Why not try them all? One day you can try the variety of options at the buffet. The next day, I would recommend giong to one of the dining room and ordering whatever your heart desires. And on one of the days, try O’Sheehan’s tasty made-to-order omelets and corned beef hash! If you try them all, come back and let me know your favorite in the comments below!

37. Eat lunch on the ship instead of in port

If you’re close to the ship, go back on board to enjoy your lunch for free. And even if you plan to eat at your destination, snacks are always a good idea. (And a quality backpack is a must for carrying water bottles, snacks and towels off the ship.)

38. Norwegian Cruise Tips – Free Alcohol On the Cruise Ship

Norwegian Cruise Tips – Free Alcohol On the Cruise Ship

There is never a shortage of alcohol on a Norwegian Cruise. And if that’s something you’re interested in, I recommend getting a beverage package as one of the “Free at Sea” offers that are often run on the Norwegian website. It’s totally worth it if you are planning to spend more than $40 of alcohol a day. But, if you decide to avoid the beverage package and prefer to find some free alcohol on the ship, here are a few of my insider tips:

Freestyle Cruising

  • Attend the Captain’s Toast party or an Art Auction. They usually offer free champagne.
  • Go to an alcohol tasting event at the shops. There will be free samples served!
  • Another way to get free alcohol is to spend money in the casino. If you earn enough points in the onboard casino, the drinks sold in the casino area are free for the rest of your cruise!

Bonus tip: If you do get the beverage package, don’t stick to the drinks on the menu. You can order any other drink, try some expensive whiskey on the rocks, or try something you’ve never tried before! And, don’t forget to order some mimosas during brunch for me!

39. Self-assist Gets You off the Ship Faster

When your vacation is over and if you want to be the first ones off the ship, carry your own bags off. You could also go to guest relations and ask for zone 1 debarkation which will help you get off the ship faster. You will have to stay in line to get your bags back which can be a hassle.

Hope That I Helped!

25 Norwegian Cruise Tips You Need to Know

Are you planning on taking a cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line? Here are my 25 top Norwegian cruise tips to make the most of your vacation at sea.

norwegian cruise line travel tips

Learning the ins and outs of NCL takes a lot of experience and research—but you don’t have to do that. I’ve done the hard work for you!

From how to earn extra on board credit to secrets to find your way around the ship, I have lots of NCL tips for your upcoming Norwegian cruise.

1. Take advantage of Take Five/Free at Sea promotions

NCL often runs a Free at Sea promotion, sometimes called “Take Five”. Norwegian will offer you up to five free perks, depending on your stateroom category selection. Higher stateroom categories can choose more perks, so suite guests can usually choose all five, and inside cabin passengers can sometimes only pick one.

The most common Free at Sea offerings are:

  • Beverage Package / Open bar
  • Specialty dining package
  • Shore excursions
  • Wi-Fi package
  • Kids sail free
  • Free airfare
  • Friends and family sail free

Some Free at Sea perks will apply to only the first two passengers booked in a stateroom, but others can be used by all of your cabin companions.

Want to learn all the ins and outs of this promotion? Norwegian’s Free at Sea: The Ultimate Guide explains everything you need to know to get the most out of NCL’s sale.

Bonus NCL tip: If the next higher stateroom category offers an extra Free at Sea pick, consider upgrading—especially if you’re thinking about paying for that perk anyway. Sometimes you can save money and cruise in an upgraded room!

2. Read the Freestyle Daily every evening

If you’re a seasoned NCL cruiser, you’ll know that the arrival of the Freestyle Daily in your stateroom each evening is a highly-anticipated event!

NCL Freestyle Daily Norwegian Pearl Boston Bermuda Day 1 Page 1

But if you’re new to Norwegian or new to cruising in general, you may be wondering what is the Freestyle Daily , and why is it so important?

The Daily is a newsletter that shares tons of important information for the next day. It gives a detailed list of all the day’s activities, along with a weather report, scheduled arrival and departure times on port days, and notifications of any changes to the itinerary. It also specifies the opening and closing times for restaurants, bars, and shops.

Why is reading the Daily so important?

Reading the Freestyle Daily thoroughly is important to keep you in the know—things can change on a cruise!

On a recent Bahamas cruise, the Daily mentioned that tender tickets for our stop at Great Stirrup Cay would be available the evening before, as well as in the morning, on a first-come-first-served basis.

Many other passengers didn’t read this and weren’t able to make it into a tender boat until late in the afternoon, after Open Call. Their plan for a day-long trip to the private island was reduced to only a couple of hours, all because they didn’t read the Daily.

You’ve probably seen news articles (or YouTube videos) about passengers who get left behind in port. A common reason why this happens? Cruisers didn’t know what time all-aboard was. The Daily always lists the all-aboard time for the next day’s port.

Or, the departure time changed, and the cruisers missed the announcement in the newsletter.

Definitely set aside a few minutes each evening to read the Freestyle Daily. Any really important announcements and changes will be on the front page, so read at least that to avoid missing important information for the next day.

Bonus NCL tip: Pack a couple of highlighters to mark the activities you’re interested in on the Freestyle Daily. I highlight all of my “maybes” in yellow and then update my “definites” with a brighter color.

3. Try The Haven if you want to splurge

Norwegian isn’t known for being the fanciest cruise line around. With their low-priced cruises and plenty of free perks, a Norwegian cruise can be very budget-friendly.

So, what if you’re used to a more elevated experience, but you have your heart set on one of NCL’s itineraries? If you’re accustomed to luxury (or you just want to upgrade your experience), you can have it all in The Haven .

norwegian cruise line travel tips

What is Norwegian’s The Haven?

The Haven is an exclusive section located at the top of many NCL ships. With a private dining room, private lounge, and an exclusive courtyard and sundeck for Haven passengers, this is the ultimate VIP experience on a Norwegian cruise.

In addition to priority embarkation and disembarkation, guests receive 24-hour butler service, an exclusive concierge, and priority reservations.

How do you get access to The Haven on NCL?

In order to access The Haven, you need to book one of the Haven Staterooms. These luxurious accommodations range in size from the 2378 square foot Spa Suites for two, to the enormous 6694 square foot Three-Bedroom Garden Villa that can sleep up to eight people.

4. Know what’s included in the open bar drink package

The most popular Free at Sea perk among NCL passengers is the open bar package. But it’s not completely all-inclusive! Make sure you know which drinks are and aren’t included before you accidentally run up an expensive bar tab.

norwegian cruise line travel tips

Norwegian’s open bar (also known as the Premium Beverage Package ) is priced high ($99 a day plus gratuities) compared to other cruise lines. Even with this high fee, there are some drinks that you’ll be charged for when you have the package.

What’s included? Soft drinks, spirits, cocktails, wine (by the glass), and bottled or draft beer up to and including $15 are free with the package.

What’s not included in Norwegian’s Open Bar:

  • Beverages with a menu price over $15
  • Specialty coffee and tea drinks
  • Bottled water
  • Fresh-squeezed juices
  • Mini-bar beverages in your stateroom
  • Drinks from room service
  • Bottles of wine (you’ll get a 20% discount)
  • Beer buckets
  • Energy drinks
  • Drinks from vending machines

If you don’t think the drink package is worth it for you, you can still save money by ordering the Drink of the Day . Just check the Freestyle Daily (or ask at the bar) for each day’s discounted drink.

Bonus NCL tip : If you chose Free Open Bar as a Free at Sea perk, NCL will let you upgrade to their Premium Plus Beverage Package for an additional fee. This package lifts many of the restrictions of the Premium Beverage Package.

5. Download the Cruise Norwegian app before you board

Before you head to the ship, be sure to download the free Cruise Norwegian app. Once you’re out at sea, you’ll only be able to download it if you use expensive internet minutes. Even if you don’t have an internet package, you’ll be able to use the app on board for free.

What can you use the Cruise Norwegian app for?

  • See the daily schedule of what’s happening on the ship
  • Book shore excursions
  • Make dining reservations
  • Review your on board account
  • Keep in touch with other guests on board (for $9.95 per person for the entire cruise)

Bonus NCL tip: Messaging and calling work best when the app is open and your device is unlocked. That can use up battery power fast! Pack a small portable charger to make sure your phone or tablet stays charged.

How to keep in touch with your cruise mates with the app

For a small one-time fee, you can also use the Cruise Norwegian app to message or even call your friends and family on board. You don’t need to purchase internet minutes to use this messaging service, but everyone you’d like to stay in touch with needs to buy the service to use it.

6. Make the most of NCL’s loyalty program

Like many cruise lines, NCL has a loyalty program, Latitude Rewards , that provides perks for returning cruisers to keep them coming back. You’ll be enrolled in the program automatically after your very first NCL cruise.

What do you get with Latitude Rewards?

Latitude Rewards has six tiers of membership, with more perks available as you progress through the program. Passengers earn points for each cruise night, with double points for a stay in a Concierge-level stateroom, full suite, or The Haven.

7. Get free onboard credit with CruiseNext

Already dreaming of your next cruise? Make sure that you make a CruiseNext deposit while you’re on board, and get on board credit that you can use right away! You can earn up to $500 in onboard credit, and you don’t need to pick your next cruise right away.

How does NCL CruiseNext work?

CruiseNext deposits cost $250 each for inside through mini-suite stateroom categories. Deposits are $500 each for Concierge, suites, and The Haven.

You can purchase up to four deposits per passenger. That doesn’t necessarily mean you’re committing to four cruises, though! Norwegian often runs promotions that allow you to double up your cruise deposits on a single cruise.

Once you make your deposits, you’ll get onboard credit that you can use right away on your cruise. One deposit will net you $100 credit, two will get you $250, and three will get you $275. The program maxes out at $500 of OBC when you purchase four deposits.

(Passengers on Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Sun are eligible for the CruiseNext Lite program, with $100 deposits and smaller onboard credit amounts.)

CruiseNext deposits can be used within four years of purchase. This program is only available to passengers while aboard a Norwegian cruise. You’ll be able to find the CruiseNext team in the Atrium of the ship.

Bonus Tip: If you’re an NCL stockholder, you might be eligible for even more free OBC on every cruise! Find out more in my post How to Get Onboard Credit for Owning Norwegian Cruise Line Stock .

8. Be ready for the washy-washy crew!

Now that cruising is back, most cruise lines remind you to wash your hands or apply hand sanitizer before entering any of the dining venues.

Norwegian takes it a step further with their “washy-washy” crew! These jovial crew members stand in the entrance to each restaurant with spray bottles of hand sanitizer. They’ll remind you that you need to sanitize by singing “Washy-washy, happy happy!” at each guest, and then spraying your hands. Don’t try to ignore them, they’ll track you down!

Before my first NCL cruise (well before the pandemic), I had heard about the washy-washy people, and I frankly thought the idea sounded terrible. But they’re actually quite entertaining (especially when they follow oblivious passengers and make sure that their hands are sanitized!).

Plus, it’s reassuring to know that all of your fellow diners, especially at the buffet, have germ-free hands.

9. How to find your way around a Norwegian ship

Modern cruise ships are huge, and it used to take me a week to learn my way around a new ship. On a seven-day cruise, the trip would be over before I felt confident that I knew how to get from point A to point B without getting lost!

Over the years, I’ve learned some useful ways to get to know the layout of a ship so I can spend less time getting lost and more time having fun.

Before you get on board, download one of NCL’s handy Ship Guides and save it to your phone or tablet. You’ll often get a paper map when you’re issued your cruise card, but this is easier to read, and you’ll always have it on you.

If you’re directionally challenged (like me), memorize whether your fave spots are forward or aft on the ship. Without having to look at a map, you can just peek out a window. The water will tell you if you’re going in the right direction! The ship will always be moving forward, so if you’re moving in the opposite direction as the ship, you’re heading aft.

Not quite sure where you are on the ship in relation to where you want to go? Head for an elevator bank. There’s often a map of the entire ship located on the wall near the elevators with a helpful “you are here” dot so you can orient yourself.

Bonus NCL tip: On some Norwegian ships, the carpets in the hallways feature a swimming fish pattern. Follow the fish—they’re always swimming towards the forward part of the ship!

10. Learn how to make Freestyle Dining work for you

In the early 2000s, Norwegian pioneered the idea of dining on your own schedule, with only the people you want to have dinner with. Before this innovative idea took hold, you’d have a set dinner time, with the same group of people each night. Although this can be a great way to get to know new friends, not everyone wants to eat at the same time each night (or force conversation with strangers).

Enter NCL’s Freestyle Dining . You can eat where you want, when you want. If you and your partner are cruising by yourselves, you can have an intimate dinner for two without having to worry about making small talk.

Traveling with a group of friends or family? You can choose which nights you want to eat together, and when it makes more sense to split up.

The drawback? Most people tend to want to have dinner at around the same time. The main dining rooms have a limited capacity, so there can be a wait at peak times.

How can you avoid a long wait time for dinner on Norwegian ships?

Each group of passengers is different, so I won’t give you a specific time to avoid. But in general, older people and families with young kids tend to eat earlier.

If your cruise seems to be heavily populated with these demographics, planning for a later dining time usually results in a shorter wait for a table in the main dining rooms—or no wait at all.

If you want a better idea of how much demand there is for a table in any dining room, on some ships, digital screens near the restaurants show approximate wait times along with the evening’s menu.

Can you make reservations for the main dining rooms on Norwegian?

Yes, you can absolutely make reservations for the main dining room! If you have a large party or you need a specific dining time because of a planned activity, this is a great idea.

You can make reservations on the NCL website before your cruise, but I usually just make my reservations on board when I have a better idea of which activities we’ll be doing. You can also book right at the restaurant’s host stand.

The Cruise Norwegian app also (theoretically) lets you make reservations, but this feature wasn’t available on my most recent NCL cruise.

Bonus NCL tip: if you show up to a dining room and there’s a long wait for a table, often the host will give you a pager and a drink coupon for a glass of sparkling wine while you wait!

11. Don’t try to take (most) drinks on board

Norwegian is very strict when it comes to passengers carrying on their own beverages. In fact, you can’t take any drinks on board an NCL ship, with the exception of bottles of wine and champagne.

Each bottle is subject to a $15 corkage fee for a 750 ml bottle, and $30 for a 1500 ml bottle. Norwegian will charge you this fee regardless of where you consume the wine, even in your own stateroom!

NCL doesn’t allow any bottled water or soda to be brought aboard, with the exception of sealed, purified/distilled water for baby formula or medical devices.

Make sure you take a packable, reusable water bottle if you plan on drinking tap water (it’s perfectly safe to consume). Or, you can order cartons of Just Water before your cruise. The spring water in recyclable, plant-based cartons will be delivered right to your stateroom.

12. Try O’Sheehan’s for casual dining round-the-clock

On most cruise lines these days, you’re not able to get much (if any) food in the wee hours of the morning. Not so on Norwegian!

Not only is O’Sheehan’s open 24/7, but they have some seriously good pub food (the wings are to die for!)

norwegian cruise line travel tips

If you’re a night owl, this complimentary dining venue is the place to go after an evening in the nightclub, casino, or after a show.

O’Sheehan’s is a table-service restaurant that feels like an Irish-themed sports bar. Seating options include high-top bar tables and limited bar seats as well as booths and tables away from the bar area.

Menu options include pub-style snacks like chicken wings and nachos, along with burgers, soup, salad, and traditional Irish favorites like Shepherd’s Pie and Bangers and Mash.

Many Norwegian ships feature O’Sheehan’s, but don’t despair if your ship doesn’t! Most NCL ships offer a late-night dining option. Blue Lagoon , The Local , Sports Bar, and Cadillac Diner are also all open late.

Norwegian often claims that these venues are open 24/7 but in my experience, that’s not always true. Check the Freestyle Daily for hours.

Bonus NCL tip: Try O’Sheehan’s in the morning if you want a quick breakfast without battling the crowds at the buffet. They have a breakfast menu with both hot and cold options.

13. How to do laundry on NCL

NCL ships don’t have self-service laundry and ironing rooms for guests, but all Norwegian ships offer laundry service for a fee.

If you choose to send your laundry to be cleaned, remember that they use industrial washers and dryers so it’s not suitable for delicate clothes that could shrink or otherwise be damaged by heat.

Save money on NCL’s laundry service

Keep an eye on your Freestyle Daily for a flyer offering discounted laundry or pressing services. On a recent Norwegian cruise, there was a flyer for 50% off pressing in the first day’s Daily, and a flyer for a bag of laundry washed, dried, and pressed for $19.95.

The discount flyers will note exactly when you need to have your laundry ready and what day it will be returned. Read this carefully, because the discount is only available for the time period it specifies.

Order an iron and ironing board

You can ask your room steward or call housekeeping to deliver an iron and board to your room. They’ll drop them off and pick them back up after about an hour.

14. Save money with a specialty dining package

If you didn’t choose a specialty dining package as part of a Free at Sea promotion, you can still purchase a discounted package. If you plan on eating at least a few dinners at specialty restaurants, it really pays off to bundle it into a package.

NCL’s specialty restaurant menu items are priced à la carte, and without a package you’ll have to pay for each item individually.

Prices vary by restaurant, but as an example, Le Bistro ‘s main courses are priced in the $20-40 range, starters are about $8-14, and desserts are $5-14. With a dining package, your entire meal is covered in the price.

You can purchase 3- to 14-day specialty dining packages online (call NCL for packages over 14 days), and your cost per meal decreases the more days you purchase.

For example, a three-day package will cost $33 per meal, but a 14-day will cost just $15.65 per meal.

Bonus NCL tip: Dining reservations open 90-120 days before sailing depending on the cruise. Book your specialty dining reservations at least a few weeks (if not earlier) before your cruise to make sure you can choose the restaurants and dining times that work for you.

15. How to make sure you get a (good) seat for shows

NCL offers a variety of evening entertainment shows, including comedy, magic, and Broadway-style productions. Most are free and offer first-come, first-served seating. If you want your pick of seats, show up 15-30 minutes prior to the show (the earlier the better). The popular shows can fill up fast!

One caveat: if you would rather your fellow passengers not be angry with you, don’t send one member of your party to reserve a block of seats. This is a huge breach of cruise etiquette! If you want seats together, your entire party needs to show up early and sit in them.

If you’d like to see a show that requires tickets, such as one of the Illusorium dinner shows, some can be booked online before your cruise, and some need to be booked on board. Check the entertainment section of your online cruise planner for specifics.

For shows that require tickets, you can often book premium seating for an additional charge.

16. Head to the rides during off-peak hours

Are you booked on one of the newer Norwegian cruise ships? From go-karts to waterslides to 3D simulation rides, NCL’s megaships have lots of activities for all ages. But the larger ships also have more passengers lining up for the best attractions!

How can you enjoy these experiences without wasting your precious vacation time standing in long lines? Plan to visit during off-peak hours, when most of the other passengers are off doing something else.

  • Eat dinner late, and ride during the typical dinner hours. You’ll beat the crowds for your favorite rides and the dinner rush.
  • Are you stopping in a port that you don’t care to visit? Stay on board and you’ll have the ship (and the rides) to yourself.

Bonus NCL tip: You can make reservations for some rides, like the go-karts on Norwegian Joy, Bliss , and Encore . Make sure to reserve early (via your stateroom TV), because spots can fill up quickly.

17. Take advantage of the kids club

If you’re cruising with your kids or grandkids under age 18, one of the first things you’ll want to do on embarkation day is to sign them up for the kids club.

NCL’s youth programs offer tons of supervised activities by age group, and the drop-off programs are free during the day for ages 3-17.

norwegian cruise line travel tips

Guppies Program for babies and toddlers

If you have a baby or toddler from six months old through two years, Norwegian’s Guppies Program offers open play as well as hosted activities. It’s not a drop-off program on most ships (only the Norwegian Escape has a drop-off Guppies Nursery , available for an added charge) so a parent will need to stay with their child.

With the exception of Guppies Nursery, this is a free activity and you won’t need to register your baby or toddler for the program. Check the Freestyle Daily for locations and times.

Splash Academy (age 3-12) and Entourage (age 13-17)

Splash Academy offers supervised activities by age group, while Entourage has a mix of organized events and hangouts. Both programs are free during the day, but a small meal fee applies on port days if you’re not planning on picking up your child for meals.

Late Night Fun Zone

For a small added charge, the Late Night Fun Zone crew will supervise your kids aged 3-12 in the evening. Perfect if you’re planning to hit the casino or nightclub, or just relax in a lounge! It’s open from 10:30 PM until 1:30 AM, but make sure to register the kids early—staff tends to shut down early if no kids are registered.

Bonus NCL tip: If your teen would never want to participate in a kids club, encourage them to at least show up on the first day. It’s the best way to meet other kids their age to hang out with early in the cruise, even if they never plan on doing any of the organized activities.

18. Book your spa treatments on the right days to save money

Spa treatments on cruise ships can be pricey, but there’s a way to get a discount on NCL’s spa services. The spa staff wants to fill all of their open time slots, but most people book massages and facials on sea days.

norwegian cruise line travel tips

The spa will usually offer a discount to encourage passengers to book during off-peak hours, usually embarkation day and days when the ship is in port. Watch the Freestyle Daily for discounts and free add-on services when you book.

Some services can also be booked at a discount when you purchase a package or series of treatments.

Bonus NCL tip: Visit the spa on embarkation day for tours, extra discounts, and to enter the raffle for a chance to win free services.

19. Limit your kids’ spending

If you’re worried that your kids will decide to go on a shopping spree or go nuts at the arcade, you can set a spending limit on their cruise cards. The best way to do this is by setting up a cash account for them at Guest Services.

norwegian cruise line travel tips

With a cash limit on their cruise cards, your kids can still have the freedom of buying occasional treats and souvenirs without racking up a huge bill. Plus, it can help them learn how to budget their spending money over the entire cruise.

20. Bring a white outfit for the theme party

Most NCL cruises have a theme party one night where most guests wear a white outfit. The party goes by various names; I’ve seen it called the White Hot Party , Glow (you’re encouraged to add neon accents), or Caliente , but they’re all essentially the same event.

Usually, there’s a family party for all ages so the kids can be involved as well, but it often starts pretty late. On a recent NCL sailing, the Family Glow Party began at 9 PM. The main party started later on the pool deck and then moved to the nightclub.

Bonus NCL tip: If you show up to the Glow Party early, the crew usually hands out glow sticks and accessories—but they go fast! Or, just pack your own to add to the fun.

21. Be careful when bidding on cabin upgrades

After you make your final payment for your cruise, you might get an email asking if you want to bid on a stateroom upgrade. NCL’s Upgrade Advantage Program will allow you to switch to a higher-category stateroom if you’re the winning bidder.

Sometimes you can get a bargain on a better room, but other times it may not be worth it. If you win, you’ll be switched to a guarantee stateroom , so you won’t be able to choose your room location. Your perfectly-located inside stateroom might be exchanged for an obstructed oceanview right near the nightclub!

If you bid too high, you could end up paying even more than if you had just booked the higher-category room in the first place. You also won’t receive any additional Free at Sea perks that you’d normally receive with the new cabin category.

My tip? Only bid an amount you’re comfortably willing to spend for any stateroom in the upgrade category. If you wouldn’t be happy with the worst room in the category, don’t bid at all.

22. How to get cash during your NCL cruise without paying high fees

If you need a small amount of cash during your Norwegian cruise, there are always ATMs available on the ship, as well as in port. But those ATMs charge high fees, and most banks will hit you with another fee for using another bank’s machine. It can get pricey fast, especially if you just need a small amount of cash for tips, food, or souvenirs in port.

What do you do if you forgot to take enough cash on the cruise? Hit the casino! You can transfer money on any slot machine from your linked credit card to your casino account. Cash out your balance to a paper ticket, then cash the ticket at the casino cashier’s desk.

As of 2022, NCL charges 3% on money that you transfer from your cruise card. Depending on your bank, this trick could cut your ATM fees in half if you just need to take out a small amount.

23. Don’t wait until the day of your cruise to print your cruise documents

Even if you check in online for your cruise super early with NCL, you won’t be able to print your cruise documents until about five days before your cruise. At that time, you’ll need to print several documents for your cruising party, as well as a paper bag tag for each piece of luggage that you plan to check at the port.

If you’re traveling before your cruise, you might not have easy access to a printer during those last few days. If you’re able to find a spot to print them out, it will make your check-in process at the port faster and easier.

Be aware that Norwegian is required to close out the ship’s manifest before the cruise, so you won’t be able to access online check-in (or your documents!) at any time on embarkation day.

What if you aren’t able to print your documents before your NCL cruise?

If you can’t print your documents before your cruise, make sure you know your stateroom number. You won’t be able to find it on NCL’s website on the day of sailing, so make a note of it as soon as your room number is available.

Security at the port will be able to look up your reservation on their manifest with your ID, and the porters will have spare bag tags where you can write your cabin number and last name.

24. Pick a cruise that stops at Great Stirrup Cay

If you’re looking for the ultimate beach day, book a cruise that includes a stop at Great Stirrup Cay . Norwegian’s 268-acre private island is located in the Berry Islands of the Bahamas.

norwegian cruise line travel tips

What is there to do at Great Stirrup Cay?

In addition to its white sandy beach, Great Stirrup Cay has tons of watersports and activities for cruisers to enjoy (at an additional cost). You can rent a wave runner, try stand-up paddleboarding, parasail across the sky, or rent a float to just relax on the waves.

Shore excursions are available, including snorkeling at coral reefs or an underwater sculpture garden. You can also take a boat ride to nearby Treasure Island to visit their own group of swimming pigs.

If you want to stay out of the sun, cabanas and villas are available to rent, as well as beach clamshells.

Bonus NCL tip: Pick up your tender tickets the day before you visit Great Stirrup Cay to make sure you can get an early tender time. All of the restaurants and bars close in the early afternoon, and you won’t want to miss out.

Food and drinks at Great Stirrup Cay

There are several restaurants and bars available to passengers on the island, and yes, your drink package is accepted at Great Stirrup Cay !

Most dining venues on the island are complimentary, including the newly updated beach buffet, Jumbey Beach Grill , and Abaco Taco . There are three bars, including a Bacardi bar and a Patrón bar.

25. Avoid sitting near the buffet

To be honest, the buffets on NCL aren’t known for having amazing food. I try to avoid their buffet as much as possible, and I love buffets! There’s always at least one main dining room open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner—and the food is significantly better.

But if you’re in a hurry and need food fast, or just want a quick snack, the buffet can be an option in a pinch. Beware though, it will be very crowded! Whatever you do, don’t try to find a table near the buffet itself. The area in front of the buffet station is where most people choose to sit, and finding a table can be incredibly frustrating.

Instead, head to one of the far ends of the buffet seating area, and you’ll often find plenty of free tables. As a bonus, it’s usually a bit quieter as well. Or take your plates to another area of the ship, even back to your room! There are no rules about where you need to sit to eat your meal.

Have you cruised on NCL? What are your favorite Norwegian cruise tips? I’d love to hear from you in the comments!

Be careful using the onboard internet. You will have a wifi CONNECTION all the time, but you must log on to start using it and LOG OUT as soon as you have finished. If you fail to do this your internet minutes will be slipping away. They log you out after 35mins of inactivity - but that can be a lot of your package.

Hi Denis, this is an excellent tip for most cruise lines when you buy a limited WiFi package, so thanks for sharing! I had a similar situation occur recently on a Princess cruise. I have free WiFi minutes because of my loyalty status, and I forgot to log out, so my precious credits were eaten up in no time! I went to the internet cafe to plead my case and was granted a credit for my stupidity. I'd hope that NCL would do the same, but I've never personally encountered that situation on a Norwegian ship. I'd love to know if you also asked about it and what the staff said.

Must-know tips for a Norwegian Cruise Line vacation

Pack the essentials for a tropical getaway.

Packing the right items for your sailing adventure with Norwegian Cruise Line is essential. Don’t forget these must-have essentials: sunscreen for protecting your skin from UV rays in sunny destinations and during outdoor activities onboard.

Comfortable shoes are another essential item to pack for your Norwegian Cruise Line adventure. Whether you’re exploring the ship’s various decks or going on shore excursions at different ports of call, comfortable shoes will keep your feet happy and blister-free while you travel on the ships. Opt for sneakers or walking shoes that provide good support and cushioning in the cabins.

And of course, don’t forget to bring swimwear for your Norwegian Cruise Line vacation! Their ships offer fantastic pools and water parks, so be prepared to take a dip and enjoy some fun in the sun at the onboard attractions. Whether you prefer one-piece swimsuits or trendy bikinis, make sure you have enough options to last the duration of your cruise sailing. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to go swimming while staying in their comfortable cabins. And when you’re ready to relax, grab a refreshing drink from one of their bars and lounges.

Familiarize yourself with the ship’s layout

To fully enjoy your Norwegian Cruise Line experience, take some time to familiarize yourself with the ship’s layout before embarking on your sailing journey. Each cruise ship has its own unique design and features multiple decks filled with exciting amenities and comfortable cabins.

Studying the deck plans of cruise ships will help you easily navigate during your cruise sailing. You’ll know where to find restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, pools, fitness centers, spas, and more. By knowing the layout beforehand, you won’t waste time on board trying to find what you need in the cabins.

Understanding the layout of the ships can help you plan out your daily activities better. You can strategically choose which areas of the ship to explore first or which cabins to visit at specific times. This way, you can make the most of your sailing vacation and ensure you don’t miss out on any exciting experiences on board.

Take advantage of early booking discounts and promotions

When planning a Norwegian Cruise Line vacation, it’s always a good idea to keep an eye out for early booking discounts and promotions for ships. By booking your sailing cruise well in advance, you can often secure better deals and save money on cabins. This is especially beneficial for guests.

Norwegian Cruise Line frequently offers special promotions for ships such as discounted fares, onboard credits, free beverage packages, or even reduced deposits. These deals are usually available for a limited time and are more likely to be available when you book early. So, if you have a specific sailing date in mind, it’s worth checking their website or contacting a travel agent to see what offers for cabins are currently available.

By taking advantage of these early booking discounts and promotions, you can enjoy additional perks while sailing on ships during your cruise vacation without breaking the bank. It’s an excellent way to enhance your overall experience in the cabin while still staying within your budget and exploring different ports.

Make dining reservations in advance

One of the highlights of a Norwegian Cruise Line vacation is the incredible dining options available onboard ships. From casual eateries to specialty restaurants offering international cuisine, there is something for every palate. Guests can enjoy delicious meals while sailing and relax in their comfortable cabin.

To ensure guests on cruise ships get the dining experience they desire, it’s recommended to make dining reservations in advance. By doing so, guests can secure preferred dining times and venues that may otherwise fill up quickly during peak hours on the cruise sailing. Whether guests are craving a juicy steak at Cagney’s Steakhouse or want to indulge in authentic Italian dishes at La Cucina, making reservations ahead of time will guarantee that they won’t miss out on these culinary delights during their cabin stay.

Norwegian Cruise Line provides various ways to make dining reservations before your trip on their ships. You can either use their online reservation system or contact their customer service directly. Whichever method you choose, remember that popular restaurants tend to book up fast, so it’s best to plan ahead and secure your dining preferences for you and your fellow guests.

Don’t forget necessary travel documents

Before embarking on your Norwegian Cruise Line vacation, it’s essential to ensure you have all the necessary travel documents for ships, port, vessels, and guests.

ncl gratuities

Full guide to Norwegian Cruise Line gratuities

Automatic gratuity charges on norwegian cruises.

Norwegian Cruise Line, like many other cruise lines, applies automatic gratuity charges to ensure that the hardworking crew members on their ships are fairly compensated for their exceptional service. These charges are typically added to your onboard account and cover various services throughout your cruise, such as dining, housekeeping, and entertainment for all guests aboard the vessels.

Understanding how gratuities work on cruise ships is essential for guests to avoid any surprises when settling their final bill. The amount charged per day varies depending on the vessels and cabin category chosen. For instance, as of 2021, it can range from $15 to $18 per person per day. Keep in mind that this amount is subject to change, so it’s always a good idea to check with Norwegian Cruise Line for the most up-to-date information.

Distribution of gratuities among crew members

You may wonder how these automatic gratuities are distributed among the hardworking crew members who make your cruise experience unforgettable on Norwegian Cruise Line ships. Norwegian Cruise Line has a comprehensive system in place to ensure fair distribution among the guests and crew members on their vessels.

The majority of the automatic gratuities on cruise sailing ships go directly to the stateroom steward, waitstaff in restaurants, and bartenders who cater to guests’ needs at various venues onboard. These individuals rely heavily on these tips as part of their income on vessels.

Behind-the-scenes crew members who work tirelessly on cruise ships, but may not interact with guests directly, also receive a portion of the automatic gratuities. This includes individuals like galley staff, laundry personnel, and other support staff who play crucial roles in maintaining the high standards of service aboard the ship. The image of these hardworking individuals ensures a smooth cruise sailing experience for all guests.

Alternative options for handling gratuities

While automatic gratuities are convenient for many guests since they eliminate the need for carrying cash or worrying about tipping etiquette during your cruise vacation, Norwegian Cruise Line allows some flexibility if you prefer an alternative approach. This is especially helpful for passengers on ships who may want to adjust their gratuity amount. It’s a great way to ensure that all crew members on the vessels are properly compensated for their hard work. Plus, it gives you the freedom to customize your tipping experience according to your preferences. So, if you have a different image of how you want to show your appreciation, Norwegian Cruise Line has got you covered.

If you wish to handle gratuities differently on our ships, you have the option to prepay them before your cruise or adjust them once onboard. Prepaying ensures that you won’t need to worry about settling the charges at the end of your trip. On the other hand, if you prefer to adjust or remove automatic gratuities altogether, our guest services on the vessels can assist you with this request.

It’s important to note that if you choose to modify or remove automatic gratuities on ships, it’s customary to provide individual tips directly to crew members who have provided exceptional service during your cruise. This allows you to recognize and reward outstanding efforts while ensuring that guests behind-the-scenes also receive their fair share.

Tipping etiquette for exceptional service

While Norwegian Cruise Line includes automatic gratuities for ships in your onboard account, it’s worth mentioning that tipping for exceptional service from guests is always appreciated. If a crew member goes above and beyond during your cruise—whether it’s providing personalized recommendations, surprising you with special treats, or simply making your experience more enjoyable—it’s customary to express gratitude through additional tips. This can also help create a positive image for the crew members.

When determining how much extra to tip for exceptional service on cruise ships, there isn’t a strict rule or percentage like with automatic gratuities. It ultimately depends on your personal satisfaction and budget. However, consider offering an amount that reflects the level of service provided and shows appreciation for their outstanding efforts in serving guests during the cruise sailing.

Remember that tipping is a personal choice for cruise sailing guests and should never be forced upon you. It’s essential to feel comfortable with any additional tips you give and ensure they align with your overall satisfaction. The image of the ships should also be taken into consideration when deciding on tipping.

ncl dining

Finding the Best Dining Options Onboard

One of the most exciting aspects for guests aboard ships is exploring the variety of dining options available onboard. From specialty restaurants that offer unique culinary experiences to complimentary dining venues, there is something to cater to every taste and preference. The image of these dining options is sure to impress food enthusiasts.

Discovering Specialty Restaurants for Unique Culinary Experiences

Norwegian cruise ships offer specialty dining options that take guests on a culinary journey. These restaurants provide an elevated experience and an opportunity to indulge in exquisite dishes crafted by world-class chefs. The image of the cruise ship’s dining experience is enhanced by the diverse flavors showcased from around the globe. Although there is an additional cost, the splurge is well worth it for guests.

Imagine savoring succulent seafood delicacies at a high-end seafood restaurant on one of our luxury ships or enjoying perfectly cooked steaks at a top-notch steakhouse. With a wide range of specialty restaurants available onboard, our guests can explore different cuisines and embark on a culinary adventure during their voyage. Plus, our ships offer breathtaking views, so you can enjoy your meal while taking in the stunning image of the ocean.

Exploring Complimentary Dining Venues Catering to All Tastes

While specialty dining on Norwegian cruise ships offers an extraordinary experience for guests, the numerous complimentary dining venues ensure everyone finds something they love. Whether you prefer casual or formal settings, these venues cater to various tastes and preferences and provide a diverse culinary image.

With these Norwegian Cruise Line tips and tricks, you'll have the best cruise! These cruise tips include what to pack for cruises, which room to book, what to know about excursions, and more!

Booking the Cruise

1. to “free or sea” or not.

Norwegian Cruise Line often has a deal called “Free at Sea” which allows for a 2 nd guest to cruise for free, plus some other freebies including free unlimited open bar, free specialty dining, shore excursion credit of $50 per person, and more!

To qualify for Free at Sea packages, you need to select a qualifying cruise . When searching for cruises, look below the price for available offers.

2. Should you get a drink package?

When booking your cruise, you’ll want to consider if a drink package is right for you.

Let’s do the math. For example, for my 5 day cruise, the drink package was $99 per person. That equates to ~ $20 per day. Since drinks cost about $15-20 per drink, as long as you average one to two drinks a day, the drink package has paid for itself!

3. Tips for booking shore excursions

After you have the base cruise booked, you’ll want to start looking at shore excursions. This is when the ship ports and you get off the boat to explore the local area. Excursions can range from very active activities like hiking in rainforests, jumping off waterfalls, and kayaking, to very relaxed activities like a beach day.

No matter what your fancy, you’ll want to book excursions sooner rather than later because they can and will sell out.

Note that the prices for excursions vary as well. For my cruise, we saw excursions as cheap as $40 per person (for snorkel gear) and as expensive as $4000 for a private cabana rental.

4. Budget for extra expenses

On that note, you’ll want to budget for these extra expenses and more before traveling. Some hidden expenses you may not realize include:

  • Shore excursions
  • Tips for excursion and ship staff
  • On board activities (often $15 per activity per person on NCL)
  • Spa treatments (minimum $200 for a 50 minute massage)

5. Understanding room types

I have only been on two cruises so I’ve only tried an interior stateroom and a balcony. From my experience, the balcony is 100% worth the extra cost.

I found that as an introvert, I could escape to my balcony to still enjoy the ocean and sunshine without the extreme crowds on the pool deck. Not to mention the stargazing was INCREDIBLE! We even enjoyed some pre-ordered room service breakfast from the balcony in peace.

What to Pack for your Cruise

6. magnetic hooks.

One of the most fun cruise packing hacks is that the walls of your stateroom are magnetic, so you can purchase magnetic hooks to bring with you to help you stay organized in your unpacking.

I’d recommend hooks for any extra towels, toiletry bag, purses, or even jackets.

@periodicadventures So you can hang bathing suits, jackets, and toiletry bags on the walls of your cruise room! So useful! #cruisehacks #cruisetips #cruisepacking #cruisepackingtips #packingforacruise #cruisetok #cruisetipsfortravellers #cruiseshippacking #travelhacks #packinghacksfortravel #packingtipsfortravel ♬ If We Ever Broke Up – Mae Stephens

7. Power adapters

Don’t forget your chargers! And a little hack is that on Norwegian cruises in addition to typical US outlets, there are also European 220/230 volt outlets, so if you have a converter and adapter, you can bring that for extra charging power.

Some people even bring power strips , although I found the number of outlets plenty sufficient for my charging needs (two phones, camera, and Nintendo Switch).

8. Microfiber towels

On Norwegian shore excursions and at the pool, towels are provided for you. However, there is a $25 per lost towel charge so if you’re worried about losing your towel, opt to bring your own.

I personally prefer to travel with microfiber towels because they dry SUPER fast. I took mine all over Israel and it was a hit compared to everyone else’s standard bath towels.

9. Water shoes

My number one cruise packing essential. If there’s one thing everyone in my group was glad they brought, it was water shoes.

For our excursions we did a waterfall jumping and climbing activity and water shoes were a MUST. Not only that but locals were selling upcharged water shoes at the activity location so it saved us some money!

I love these water shoes because they look like tennis shoes and you can easily do light hiking in them to and from the water activities.

10. Sunscreen and aloe

If there’s one thing I hate when traveling, it’s spending a ton of extra money on essentials because you have no other option. For me, that’s always sunscreen and aloe .

I once went to a spa staycation where I forgot my sunscreen and they charged $25 for a small bottle! Better than skin cancer, I guess 🙃

On your cruise, you’ll want to pack sunscreen and aloe so you don’t need to buy any on the ship. If you’re flying in, pack it in your check bag to avoid the 3.4 oz TSA rule.

If you’re carrying on your bag, I recommend hitting up a Target or Walmart on the way to your cruise to stock up on the essentials before boarding the ship.

11. Seasickness prep

Unfortunately, if you’ve never been cruising you won’t really know if you get seasick until you’re on the boat. That said, it helps to prep for the worst.

I recommend packing some Dramamine and these acupressure bracelets that help recalibrate your senses.

norwegian cruise line travel tips

12. Walkie talkies

This is the one thing I wish we had packed and I know it sounds silly. But listen, Norwegian cruises charge ridiculous amounts for WiFi making communication between parties of your group difficult.

For some reason, within their app, there’s no option to message other people with the app. Yes, I agree, that’s dumb.

But with walkie talkies , you’d always be able to contact your group!

norwegian cruise line travel tips

13. All the right documents

On a more serious note, be sure you pack all the documents you need for checking in with Norwegian and also for disembarking at each destination on your itinerary.

On my cruise, we only needed our passports. However, given the times, you may need a vaccine card. Norwegian will send you paperwork upon confirmation of your cruise booking that has specific country document requirements.

14. Ziploc bags

When you book your excursions, you’ll notice that some of them have meal options and some noticeably do not. However, even without meals, the excursions can last hours.

Because of that, it helps to pack snacks so you can recharge on the go. Further, it’s even more helpful if you pack Ziploc bags ahead of time so you can snag and pack items from the buffet like muffins, croissants, and cereal.

15. Poo-pourri

Okay sharing a small cabin means you can hear and smell everything. Pack a small bottle of poo-pourri so no one feels self-conscious and everyone’s nose gets some relief from the inevitable.

Tips for a Smooth Check-in and Arrival

16. arrive a day early.

This tip is tried and true. No matter when you set sail, you want to arrive to the port city one day early. The purpose of this is to allow for any delays in flights, transportation, or anything out of the blue.

If you arrive on time without any delays, it also allows you to explore the port city a bit ahead of time. There are even excursions you can book if you want to go on a guided activity.

17. Check-in online ahead of time

Norwegian has an online check in system that you can use ahead of time to speed up the check in process. You’ll answer some onboarding questions, upload your documents, and watch the necessary safety videos.

That way, when you arrive to the check-in counter before boarding, they already have everything they need and can get your room keys.

18. Know what is (and isn’t) allowed on board

Before checking in, there is a security check complete with X-ray scans of your bags and a metal detector you must walk through.

Be sure you know what you can and cannot bring on board . For example, bringing alcohol on a cruise is not always straight forward. On Norwegian cruises, you can not bring alcohol, but you can bring a bottle of wine or champagne where a “corkage fee” applies of $15 for a 750 mL bottle and $30 for a 1500 mL bottle.

You also cannot bring unsealed food items, steamers, drones, or candles.

@periodicadventures To calculate if a drink plan is worth it, take the cost of the plan divided by the number of cruise days. Thats how much you’d need to spend on drinks every day for it to be worth it. So assuming a drink is $15, you can figure it out! #cruisetips #cruisehacks #cruisetravel #cruisetraveling #cruises #cruise #cruisetok #cruisetip #cruisetipsfortravellers #cruisetipsandtricks ♬ If We Ever Broke Up – Mae Stephens

19. How to drop off your bags

When you arrive at the port, it’s a bit chaotic. Everyone is arriving. There are lots of cars and staff running around.

You can bring your own bags aboard, but it is infinitely easier to drop off your bags to have them delivered directly to your stateroom.

Locate the proper staff, usually surrounding carts of luggage. They will need your stateroom number and the number of bags, upon which they will tag your luggage and take it away.

When you arrive at your stateroom, the bags will be there!

You are expected to tip the staff who handles your bags, but given the convenience, I’d say it’s worth it!

20. Download the NCL app

Before you set sail, you’ll absolutely want the NCL app. It has everything you need to have a smooth cruise including restaurant, on board activities, and excursion reservations, plus the ship’s daily itinerary.

It does need WiFi to operate but, Norwegian does provide free WiFi for app access only.

21. Boarding day discounts

When you first arrive on board, if you’re interested in shopping or in the spa, you can get a boarding day discount on items and services.

Visit the shops and the spa to learn what offers they are running and don’t wait because they’ll be back to regular prices the next day!

22. Turn off cell data

Before you set sail, make sure you turn off your cellular data or else you may end up with a ton of roaming charges!

23. WiFi for running the app

Check out the WiFi situation while you’re still in your port city so that you have cellular data as a backup while learning the ropes.

Norwegian offers free WiFi to access their app. Anything beyond the app, you’ll have to pay for.

You would not believe how clever cruise staterooms are in making use of the space provided. Every space in the room is utilized. There are cabinets and storage drawers hiding everywhere so you truly can unpack!

We split the space so one of us used the closet shelves and the other used the cabinets under the TV. Then we put both our suitcases upright in the closet.

Tips for Your On Board Experience

25. your holy bible: the freestyle daily.

Each day your stateroom will be turned down and you’ll receive a Freestyle Daily, NCL’s newspaper with the daily itinerary, information on your next destination, and general info about dining, WiFi, and more.

While you can see the same information on the NCL app, the Freestyle Daily usually has the most up to date information. It can be helpful to plan out your next day’s activities.

Take a picture of it so you can refer back to it without carrying it with you!

Freestyle Daily newsletter with schedule of activities shown on open page

26. Scout out the activities

Before you get settled too much into the ship, you’ll want to scout out the activities on board to see if there are any you want to do.

For example, I sailed on the Norwegian Encore and we had laser tag, go karts, and VR escape room activity.

Unfortunately, we decided too late that we wanted to try the VR experience and it had booked completely up.

27. Where to add/change activities

Speaking of activities, there are many locations on board where you can add on activities or change your reservations.

You can do this from the NCL app, your stateroom’s TV, the guest services desk, or even the TV’s around the ship located near the elevators.

When you add on activities, the surcharge will be charged to your room (typically $15 per activity).

28. Make a must-do on board list

While you’re touring the ship, start a note on your phone of what you absolutely must-do while on board. Do you want to visit the gelato shop? Do the wine tasting? Ride the “overboard” water slide?

Whatever your fancy, don’t miss out because you forgot what the options were or didn’t prioritize your time properly!

29. Plan for shows early

You may sense a theme here. If there are on board activities you want to do, plan for them early. That holds for shows too. You do need to get tickets to shows if possible or if a show is not ticketed, get there early, because there are still capacity rules to follow.

For example, I tried to go to a Beatles show but it reached capacity even 30 minutes early!

30. Have a meet up spot

If you’re in a larger group where your rooms are not right next door to each other, before everyone split’s up, designate a meet up spot. This can help you find each other since communication can be tricky!

We opted for the restaurant located in the center of the ship, just to give you an idea.

31. Write down room numbers

Another way to stay on top of your group’s communication is by using the in room phones to call each other. You can even leave voicemails to let people know where you’re going.

However, in order to do that, you’ll need to know everyone’s room numbers. Keep a note in your phone with this info so you can access it every time!

32. Stay on top of time zone changes

If your cruise travels across different time zones, here are a couple tips so you stay on top of it!

First, your stateroom attendant will typically put a “time zone change” card in your room or on your door to notify you when it is happening. If you don’t see a card, you can always check the NCL app for the ship time, which will always reflect any time zone changes.

33. Bring your room key everywhere

One note on room keys. You’ll want to keep your room key on you at all times. You use it for EVERYTHING. You’ll use it to check in to dining reservations everywhere, to get your drinks, to sign in for activities, and to pay for extra snacks like gelato!

You’ll even use it to get on and off the ship when you port.

If you do lose the key, head to the guest services desk to get it replaced.

Tips and Tricks for Excursions

34. how to get free towels.

When you get off the ship for your excursion, Norwegian has a free towel station set up right off the ship on the port. Grab as many as you need, but remember to drop them off back at the tent when you’re done otherwise you’ll be charged $25 per towel.

This is the same system for pool towels.

35. Bring cash

For your excursion, make sure to bring a little cash so that you can tip your driver, guide, photographers, or whoever will be providing a service to you.

36. Pack snacks

Snacks are crucial! When booking excursions, check if your itinerary comes with a meal option or not. If not, you absolutely will want to pack snacks. Some excursions take 6-8 hours and if no meal option is provided or included on the itinerary, you’ll need some snacks for a pick-me-up.

This is why packing Ziploc bags can be so helpful!

37. Try the on board activities

While excursions are a fun way to get a taste of a destination, it’s also a perfect time to relax on the cruise ship or do the things that are usually really crowded.

For example, the waterslides on my cruise ship were always backed on days at sea. However, on port days, when everyone was off the ship enjoying the stop, the waterslide lines were nonexistent!

This can also be a great time to book a photo session on board, try out a normally crowded specialty dining restaurant, or enjoy the jacuzzis more privately.

Dining Tips

38. make dinner reservations early.

I cannot stress this tip enough. Dinner reservations will fill up quickly so it’s best to make your choices early!

We often tried to make dining reservations the morning of, and sometimes that left us with some not so great dinner times like 5:00 or 8:45pm.

39. Dining room menus are the same

On Norwegian cruises there are a few main restaurants that are free. It’s important to know that the menus between these restaurants are identical but vary each day. Meaning on Mondays, each restaurant has the same menu. On Tuesday, the menu changes but each restaurant still has the same menu as one another.

That means there’s no incentive for visiting one restaurant versus another aside from the décor and vibe.

I recommend trying each one out just to see which you like best!

40. Make early reservations for specialty dining

As with regular dining, for specialty dining you’ll want to make reservations even earlier! We booked ours during excursion booking ahead of the cruise about one month out.

Even then, we were left with some early and late dinner times because all the prime times were already taken.

41. Leftovers are (sadly) impossible

Leftovers are not a thing on cruises. That means in your room, you won’t find a microwave and at restaurants and the buffet, you can’t get any to-go boxes.

We had the teppanyaki Japanese food and couldn’t possibly finish all our food. After asking for boxes, they said they could put the food on a plate and send it to our room.

Still, the plates didn’t fit in the room’s mini fridge. I put my fried rice in a glass cup.

You might be wondering where all the food waste goes and we learned that they make fish food with it by dumping it out the back of the ship into the ocean.

42. How to get late night snacks

For late night snacks, there will be at least one restaurant on board that is 24 hours. You can also order room service, which is often included.

43. Pre-order breakfast

One of my favorite things we did on our cruise was pre-order breakfast. We had a door hanger card in our room where we could fill out what breakfast items we wanted and at what time.

We placed the filled out placard on our door at night before going to bed, then in the morning at our denoted time, the breakfast showed up!

We were able to enjoy it from our balcony in peace. There was a surcharge of $4.95, but it was so worth it for that intimate experience.

Leaving Your Cruise

44. consider self-assist disembarkation.

When your cruise has come to an end, the disembarkation process can be a bit overwhelming. There are multiple exits on the ship but staff members will guide you.

One tip is to do a self-assist disembarkation. This means that you carry your own luggage off the ship. Having them handle your luggage when boarding the ship is helpful, however, when getting off, it just complicates the process. You’re assigned a color and each color leaves at a different time.

For self-assist, you can leave at your leisure and you don’t need to worry about locating your luggage in the masses after disembarking.

Self-assist also means you have more control over your timing, which is especially helpful if you have a flight to catch.

Disembarkation on a cruise is easy with self-assist

45. Breakfast in the morning

My final tip is about grabbing a final complimentary breakfast in the morning. The buffet will likely be closed, but at least one of the general dining rooms will be open. Don’t forget to grab a final free meal before heading out.

The 24 hour diner did close on my ship (the Norwegian Encore) because it was used as a queue area to funnel people off the ship.

You don’t need to make breakfast reservations, but the earlier you show up the more likely you won’t have to wait to be seated.

21 Tips & Things to Do on Norwegian Encore

With its debut in late 2019, Norwegian Encore becomes the latest and greatest ship in the Norwegian fleet.

Sign of Norwegian cruise ship

How big of a deal is the new ship? At nearly 1,100 feet long, 20 decks, and 169,000 gross tons, Encore comes in the top 10 of the largest cruise ships in the world. But that’s only the size of the ship.

On board you’ll find a stunning number of things to do and experience, ranging from the go-kart track that’s more than 1,000 feet long and juts out over the side of the ship to a new gelato shop (Dolce) to tons of eateries, laser tag, virtual reality, a dozen bars and lounges, and a lot more.

With such a big ship — that’s also brand new — there’s a lot for passengers to know before they even set foot on board. From simple tips like how to get a table without a reservation to the best spots to people watch, we have a number of tips and things to know about Norwegian Encore before you set sail.

Norwegian Encore rendering

The Observation Lounge Makes a Comeback

The Encore is fourth Norwegian ship in the “Breakaway-Plus” class, joining its sister ships Norwegian Joy, Bliss, and Encore. One of the distinguishing features of the Joy, Bliss, and now Encore is the Observation Lounge. What’s become a passenger favorite is a two-story windowed lounge with breathtaking views that sweep the entire horizon. Complete with a bar, if you’re the sort of person who just wants to soak in the view in a quiet spot — and possibly with your favorite beverage — it doesn’t beat the Observation Lounge.

norwegian cruise line travel tips

The Race Track is Bigger and Better

By now, the race track on a Norwegian ship is practically a must-have. Norwegian Encore takes the track to the next level. The track snakes back and forth more than 1,100 feet at the top of the ship. In fact, this time the designers even put the track jutting out 13 feet over the side of the ship to allow more space to race. You do have to pay to drive, but it’s definitely worth doing at least once to have the experience. Read more about Norwegian’s go-kart track here .

Tip: Don’t Have a Reservation? Head to the Restaurant Anyway

On Norwegian ships the specialty restaurants like Food Republic, Q Texas Smokehouse, Ocean Blue and others take reservations. If you don’t reserve early enough, then the prime times can fill up quickly. That can be disheartening when there is a restaurant you really wanted to eat at and you see that the list is filled up.

If this is the case, don’t give up hope just yet. Have a backup plan, but go ahead and head down to the restaurant anyway and see if there is any room to seat you. Sometimes people with reservations don’t show or others may finish their meal early, freeing up space. It’s worth a shot. At worst, you’ll simply have to try for another night. It’s also a good idea to try early or late in the evening when fewer people are eating.

Casino on Norwegian ship

The Casino Is Ready for Those Wanting to Try Their Luck

Having a casino on a cruise ship isn’t a big deal; every ship under the sun has one. What’s different about Norwegian Encore’s (and the rest of the Breakaway-Plus ships) is how it’s styled. Many cruise casinos are small and seem to be dimly lit, along with low ceilings and lots of machines and tables jammed in. On the Breakaway vessels, however, casinos have moved to being open and airy and even have designated smoking areas so that not everyone has to breathe secondhand smoke. It’s a welcome change if you’re a casino player.

Norwegian Encore District Brew House

Have a Beer at The District Brew House

Encore has its own iteration of The District Brew House, which is also on some of its sister ships. What’s so special about this spot? Over the past decade or so beer has become a big deal, with craft brews and designer labels becoming insanely popular. The District Brew House is a beer-lover’s paradise, with dozens of beers on draft and bottled. Sit, have a brew, hang out with friends… and did we mention the insanely good views of the water from here?

norwegian cruise line travel tips

Eat Some “Q” at Q Texas Smokehouse

Now if you’re from Texas then BBQ on a cruise ship may either be sacrilege or a welcome taste of home. No matter where you’re from though, it’s worth a stop to the Q Texas Smokehouse on the Encore. It’s a specialty restaurant, so you’ll want to make reservations and will have to pay a little extra to eat here. Later in the evening it turns into a honky-tonk with dancing and a band playing.

Grab a Seat in the Atrium to People Watch

Norwegian Encore — like its sister ships — has a large center atrium, including a pass-through that spans three decks. On Deck 6 there is seating where you can have a drink, chat with friends, or just people watch.

What’s unique about the atrium is that its location in the center of the ship (and multiple decks) means that it’s the heartbeat of the ship.. As well, it’s always active and lively, with practically the entire ship passing through at some point or another. That makes it absolutely perfect for people watching.

Ocean Loops waterslide

Brave? Try Riding the Ocean Loops

There are waterslides on cruise ships… and then there is the Ocean Loops. You’ll see the slide before you even board as it’s hard to miss. It makes a large “figure 8” on the pool deck. But what’s so special is that it loops out over the side of the ship. You’ll start almost vertically, drop down and then out over the water before making a big loop back onto the ship’s deck.

And did we mention that much of the slide is clear so you can see the water below as you sail through?

The ride only lasts a few seconds, but you aren’t going to forget it anytime soon.

Haven Pool

Take a Dip in the Most Exclusive Cruise Ship Pool at Sea

Most people sailing on the Encore will never see it, but for the exclusive few staying in The Haven, the pool is a can’t miss.

For those not familiar, The Haven is Norwegian’s “resort within a resort.” The area consists of a handful of rooms that leave no expense spared. Huge suites and large balconies are just the start for these rooms. There’s also an exclusive restaurant, bar, and the pool that’s only for guests staying in The Haven. While Haven guests can enjoy the rest of the ship, other passengers can’t enter The Haven.

That means the pool is only for a few rooms, giving you some peace and quiet — and your own space — away from the larger crowds on the mega ship.

norwegian cruise line travel tips

Walk The Waterfront on Deck 8

One of the defining features of Breakaway-class ships is what Norwegian calls The Waterfront. Put simply this is a wraparound promenade that encircles about 3/4 of Deck 8. What’s nice about it is that unlike the promenade decks on some cruise ships, this one is uncovered and isn’t cluttered with things like lifeboats or large beams. The result is a walkway that connects you with sweeping views of the ocean as you sail. It’s a great place to start your day with a cup of coffee as you stroll alongside the ocean or to end your day with a walk after dinner.

Eat Outside on The Waterfront with Million-Dollar Views

If a restaurant on land was right on the water with 180-degree unobstructed views of the water, it would likely be the most popular and the most expensive place in town. On Norwegian, nearly all the restaurants and bars on Deck 8 have outdoor seating on The Waterfront.

Now eating outside might seem like a simple thing. But remember there are some big challenges to eating outdoors on a cruise ship. During the day the sun can be brutal if you are in the tropics. And if the ship is underway, then there is a constant breeze. On the Encore, Norwegian has smartly designed outdoor eating areas to take care of these issues while still keeping your view of the open water intact.

Experience Virtual Reality at the Galaxy Pavilion

One of the unique attractions you’ll find on newer Norwegian ships like the Encore and the Joy is the Galaxy Pavilion. This spot is a virtual reality arcade where you’ll find things like immersive “4-D” video games, racing simulators, and more. Strap on a headset and take a ride on a roller coaster (complete with a moving seat so that you actually feel the drops and climbs) or maybe try walking a balance beam high above the ground below (despite only being about six inches off the floor). If you’ve never experienced virtual reality games before, this is a can’t miss, but keep in mind that it does cost extra.

Norwegian fish carpet

Tip: Avoid Getting Turned Around — Look at the Fish

Here’s a tip if you’re sailing on Norwegian Encore or any other ship in the NCL fleet: Look at the floor.

When you leave your cabin and enter the hallway, it can be disorienting. The halls seem to stretch forever, with door after door after door. Without any sort of visual aid, it’s hard to tell whether you are going forward or aft.

To help you out, Norwegian put in carpet with lots of little fish on it. If you notice, they all face one direction. The way the fish are facing is forward on the ship. So if you want to head to the bow (front), just walk in the same direction as the fish are “swimming.” Want to go aft? Walk against the school of fish.

Get Your Workout In While at Sea

Ships like the Norwegian Encore are great for fitness buffs who don’t want to let the fact they are on a cruise get in the way of their workout schedule. The ship has the Pulse Fitness Center on board, located on Deck 16, just off the pool area. Now if you’re expecting something like you’d find in a hotel with maybe a few weight machines and a treadmill, reset your expectations. Gyms on these ships are big and roomy with tons of different equipment. They are also ideally placed high on the ship with tons of floor to ceiling windows so that you can have the best view you’ve ever had when working out.

Don’t Miss the Production of Kinky Boots

On each new Norwegian ship there has been a tradition of bringing a hot Broadway-style musical to the stage at sea. For instance, Norwegian Joy has Footloose, which is a huge hit with passengers. For Norwegian Encore, that show is Kinky Boots. The show on Broadway won Tony awards for best musical and best original score and has traveled everywhere from Chicago to Toronto to the West End. Now you can see the Norwegian production on your cruise, and it’s free of charge. We highly suggest getting there early as the best seats can fill up fast for these shows.

Go Back in Time (and Music) With the Cavern Club

On the Encore there is another iteration of the Cavern Club, which the ship shares with the Bliss, Epic, and Joy. For those who aren’t fully versed on music history, the Cavern Club is the spot in Liverpool, England where The Beatles got their start. On the Norwegian ships its a recreation of the music hall where guests can have a drink and listen to live music. Norwegian even has a Beatles cover band that plays so you can feel like your in England in the 1960s.

Vibe Beach Club

Lounge in the Exclusive Vibe Beach Club

If you aren’t fortunate enough to book a cabin in The Haven, don’t worry. You can still find some exclusivity aboard Norwegian for when the pool deck gets a little too crowded.

The Vibe Beach Club is actually positioned right near the sun decks for The Haven, but it’s open to regular passengers. Purchase a day pass at the Guest Services desk and you can enter. The area is adults-only and offers a more refined experience than the crowded pool area. There’s a full bar, hot tubs, loungers, even chilled towels and fruit skewers. It’s away from the crowds and ideal if you’re looking for a more private space to get some sun on those days at sea.

Don’t Forget Your Morning Starbucks

Are you the type who likes to start each day with Starbucks? Or maybe you just like to get it as a treat once in a while?

Well, you don’t have to go without just because you are on a ship in the middle of the ocean. Norwegian Encore features a full-service Starbucks (not just Starbucks-branded drinks) on Deck 6, near the main atrium. Get your double-mocha soy latte or just a cup of black coffee. It’s all here for passengers. Just keep in mind that there are charges for these drinks; Starbucks isn’t included in your cruise fare.

Laser Tag Is Back in Action

Laser tag is a unique activity aboard Norwegian that you don’t want to miss if you have kids. The theme of the Encore version is Atlantis, complete with a huge serpent and tentacles snaking their way through the open-air outdoor area. You’ll find the course at the back of the ship on Deck 18, right near the race track.

Tip: The Free Phone App Is Extremely Helpful

On a big ship like the Encore (20 decks!), it is extremely easy to get lost. There’s also a lot going on all around the ship, and knowing what’s happening and when is important. To help you out, Norwegian has the Cruise Norwegian app . Download it for free before you get on the ship.

The app is great because it features ship maps, schedules, profiles of restaurants, and even can show your onboard spending (great for budgeting) and information about restaurants and activities. It’s extremely useful to have on a mega-ship like the Encore and will help you make the most of your cruise. You can read more about the app here .

Glasses of wine

Tip: The Corks & Caps Could Be a Better Deal for a Drink Package

Drink packages are hugely popular on cruise ships, and Norwegian is no exception. The regular package runs $99 per day, plus 20% gratuity. While that’s a good deal if you plan to drink quite a bit, it actually may be more than you want to spend… and more package than you need.

The regular drink package covers most beverages on board, including beer, wine, and cocktails. But what if you have simple tastes and don’t want a lot of variety? In that case, the Caps & Corks Package may be exactly what you want. It offers up many of the benefits of the traditional drink package, but only offers beer and/or wine. The catch? It’s much cheaper — $65 per day plus gratuity. It’s not for everyone, but if you are a beer or wine drinker, it may be just the thing.

15 Norwegian Bliss Tips for Planning a Cruise

Share this post:

Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest and largest ship is now sailing from Seattle, WA! The ship will continue to offer cruises to Alaska through the summer season and will reposition to the Caribbean in the Fall. As we prepared for our second trip on Norwegian Bliss, we put together our 15 Norwegian Bliss Tips for Planning Your Next Cruise. When it comes to planning, some might say we go a little overboard, but we know that we are not alone. Believe us, even a little planning can go a long way.

Book as Early as Possible

We always recommend booking a cruise at least 6 to 12 months in advance. Early bookings allow for a greater selection of cabins, and you can often secure some of the lowest rates. If promotions or prices change, you can contact the cruise line to get an adjustment. Setting up a price alert will help ensure that you are notified when prices change, and you can keep track of current promotions with emails from NCL.

Norwegian Bliss Live Blog Sign

Consider a Travel Agent

We recommend using a travel agent if you are new to cruising. Even if you have cruised before, using a trusted travel agent may help you with the planning stages as this ship has many new amenities unlike any others at sea. Not to mention, using a travel agent can often save you money and offer you some great incentives ! On past cruises, we were able to score up to $250 of onboard credit in addition to the NCL advertised free at sea promotions.

Review the Cabin Categories

Norwegian Bliss offers several different cruise cabin categories. From your traditional inside rooms, balconies, and mini-suites to the unique studios for solo travelers, the options are quite diverse. Luxury travelers might want to consider a cabin in The Haven, an exclusive “ship within a ship” concept which includes a private sun deck, restaurant, lounge, and other exclusive areas. The different room categories might also include different perks depending on the promotion, so take a few minutes to explore the different options.

Norwegian Bliss Mini-Suite Review

Register on the NCL Website

If you have never cruised with Norwegian Cruise Line, you will need to register for an online NCL account. This is vital. Even if you have your voyage booked through a travel agent, you will need access to the online portal to plan your trip. All you need is your sailing date and reservation number, then you can begin the registration process here . Even if you have a great travel agent, we recommend doing some of these pre-cruise arrangements yourselves as they will suit your preferences and time schedules.

Create Checklists

There is a lot to do before and during your cruise, so get organized. The Princess and I set up a series of checklists to help us organize everything including the schedule for days ashore in ports of call, dining reservations, and entertainment reservations. There are many great venues on the ship, tons of onboard activities, and other things you want to enjoy during your trip. So, we suggest making a short checklist of all the things you MUST do, see, eat, and experience on the ship. That way, you will never have to ask yourself, “Why didn’t we do that?”. For starters, have a look at our Top Things to Do on Norwegian Bliss .

Examine the Dining Options (and Menus)

One benefit of Norwegian Cruise Line is the company’s “Freestyle Approach” to dining. With no set dining times or table assignments, you can choose to dine at a variety of restaurants whenever you want. Before you get onboard, you will want to get familiar with the complimentary and specialty dining venues. Regular NCL cruisers will recognize many of the venues, but there are a few new ones like  Q Texas Smokehouse  and the Local Bar and Grill. We even have all the Norwegian Bliss Specialty Restaurant menus,  so you can review all of the different food options.

Inside Food Republic on Norwegian Bliss

Consider a Specialty Dining Package

Depending on when you book your trip and your cabin category, you might already have a Norwegian Specialty Dining package as part of a promotion. If not, you might want to consider getting one as most of the specialty restaurants are a la carte pricing which can add up very quickly. We detail all of the benefits of this package in our Complete Guide to the Specialty Dining Package on NCL. On all of our NCL cruises, we have either purchased a package or received one as a perk and definitely saved ourselves some money. Of course, there are also plenty of complimentary dining options as well.

Make Dining Reservations

Yes, part of the appeal of NCL is the freestyle approach; however, we strongly suggest you book at least a few dining reservations pre-cruise. If you received the 3-night specialty dining package as part of a promotion, go ahead and book those before you cruise so you can get your preferred restaurant at your preferred time. If you are like us, you will not want to wait for a table after a long day ashore. You can make reservations at the specialty restaurants and the main dining room starting 90 days prior to your sailing.

Los Lobos on Norwegian Bliss

Book Your Entertainment

90 days is also the window to book entertainment. Currently, there are two shows that you can pre-book before your cruise. The Jersey Boys and ¡Havana!. For our Alaskan cruise, each show played on two separate evenings, with two showings each evening. Normally, there was a show around 7:30 pm and another at 10:30 pm. Again, we recommend that you book these before you set sail. There are other entertainment offerings that are not available to book online. The Social Comedy Club offers two comedians on several different days and times which you can only book once onboard. We suggest you book as soon as you board the ship so you don’t get stuck waiting in the standby line. Prohibition- The Musical is an upcharge entertainment offering that can only be booked on the ship as well.

Compare Shore Excursions

Yes, there are plenty of great things to do on the ship, but you will also be visiting several amazing ports of call. Review your options on what to do at each port before your cruise. If you need some help, we have some of our top picks for Alaskan Shore Excursions  in our archives. If you have your heart set on a particular activity, like a helicopter ride to the Mendenhall Glacier, then you should book the tour early as popular excursions do sell out quickly. You may find that you want to book one or two tours ahead of time and be spontaneous with the rest.

How to Plan Shore Excursions

Find a Pre-Cruise Hotel

We always recommend starting your vacation a day early as bad weather, flight delays, or other travel disruptions could start your trip off on the wrong foot. A pre-cruise stay in the home port city is even more important if you are flying from the East Coast to Seattle. If you are searching for the perfect pre-cruise hotel, we have you covered with our Best Places to Stay Near the Seattle Cruise port as well as our Guide to Miami Hotels Near the Cruise port . You can also check out our hotel reviews if you want more detailed information about our recommendations.

Print Up Your Cruise Docs (and Check Your IDs)

Once your final payment is processed, one of the last steps is to complete your online check-in. Print your Cruise Contract and your luggage tags, along with copies of other documents like shore excursion tickets, airline confirmation, and your hotel confirmation. We also recommend that you check the expiration of your passports (It can’t expire within 6 months of your sail date). We also take pictures of our passports just in case the real things are ever lost.

Norwegian Escape Cruise

Pack For Your Cruise

While we are a bit extreme, we usually start packing about a month in advance. Even if you are not that crazy, you should begin to think about what you will need for your trip especially if you are sailing on Norwegian Bliss to Alaska. You may need to buy a few additional clothing items especially if you live in the South and don’t really experience “winter”. If you need some guidance, we have put together complete cruise packing guides with downloadable checklists. You can review our guides to  packing for an Alaskan Cruise  as well as our  Packing Guide for the Caribbean . We also have a list of the essentials you need to pack for any cruise that is now standard in our checked bags. Many of these items can be purchased relatively inexpensively on Amazon.

Make Any Last Minute Arrangements

Hit the ground running.

With all the major items already checked off your list, all you will have to do now is enjoy yourself. The first day of a cruise should be filled with excitement and anticipation, not stress. We even have an embarkation day routine to ensure we make  the most out of our first day onboard the ship . Don’t forget to tie up any loose ends, like making onboard reservations for the comedy shows and Prohibition (if desired), checking the kids into the youth programs, or signing your activity waivers.

Norwegian Cruise Line Tips - Norwegian Viva at night

Our comprehensive collection of Norwegian Cruise Line tips for the ultimate vacation

Sailing with Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is more than a vacation; it’s an opportunity to create spectacular memories at sea, unique and distinct from land vacations. Norwegian (aka NCL) cruise ships are innovative, FUN, and feature something for every type of cruiser!

The key to unlocking the magic is in the planning, and we’re here to share some invaluable Norwegian Cruise Line travel tips . With a sprinkle of savvy NCL cruise planning and a dash of insider Norwegian cruiser advice, you’ll be set for an unforgettable cruising experience. Whether a first-time cruiser or a seasoned traveler, these cruise tips will help you navigate the essentials—from packing to onboard activities—ensuring your Norwegian cruise is the best it can be. Our goal with these NCL cruising tips is to steer you away from common pitfalls and toward a vacation filled with freestyle cruising at its finest. So, get comfortable with our Norwegian Cruise Line vacation tips and confidently embrace the journey.

Key Takeaways

  • Download the NCL mobile app for a streamlined cruise experience.
  • Research cabin choices to align with your preferences and needs.
  • Take advantage of “Free at Sea” promotions for perks and savings.
  • Explore a variety of dining options, making reservations early.
  • Leverage embarkation day deals for shows and spa experiences.
  • Research shore excursions in advance for the best selection.
  • Remember to pack smart by including our recommended NCL cruise essentials.

Embarking on a Dream: The Allure of Norwegian Cruise Line

Imagine the excitement that bubbles up when you’re about to board a majestic Norwegian Cruise Line ship. Your Norwegian Cruise Line embarkation marks the beginning of what could be the vacation of a lifetime. Getting embarkation day right can set the tone for the rest of your cruise. With NCL our first step is making sure we get to the cruise terminal on time. In the past, we used to try to get to the terminal early, but there’s no real advantage to it these days. It’s better to show up at your arranged boarding time.

This helps keep crowds down and makes embarkation smoother. To arrange your boarding time, download and log In to the My NCL app ( https://www.ncl.com/login ) and select “CHECK IN”. Once we are onboard, we look for various embarkation day specials . You can often save up to 20% on things like shows, spa treatments, and specialty dining.

Knowing the ins and outs of NCL boarding strategies can make all the difference. Prioritizing getting to the port on time ensures us ample time to navigate through the check-in process and settle into our staterooms. With the Norwegian Prima class and Breakaway-Plus class ships hosting over 4,000-5000 passengers, we advise using embarkation day to acquaint yourselves with the many venues before many of the spots become too crowded.

FUN TIP: Here’s a tip for getting your bearings quickly onboard. A unique aspect of some Norwegian cruise ships is the quirky directional guide found underfoot. The carpet in the halls has a swimming fish design. This is not just decor—the fish are there to guide you! The fish swim to the front of the ship. Always follow the fish to ensure you’re headed toward the ship’s front, providing a fun and memorable way to navigate the vessel’s interior. Not all NCL ships feature “fish swimming forward,” but it’s helpful when they do (and kids love it).

NCL Escape - Fish Swimming forward - Norwegian Cruise Line Tips

Get to know the ship early so you can get to where you want to be quickly. Another good idea is to look for ship tour videos like our Norwegian Escape full ship tour. Taking these early steps will often allow you to dodge the crowds and, in some cases, will get you first pick of activities and access to spaces that fill up fast. The following table details some of the attractions and areas worth exploring immediately after boarding one of Norwegian’s floating paradises:

Securing Your Spot: Booking Strategies for Your Best Cruise Deals

Taking a Norwegian Cruise is an experience many look forward to with great anticipation. We often save and plan years in advance of our cruise, so getting the best price is imperative for us. Securing the best deals involves mastering booking strategies that entail not only when to book but also understanding the promotions and cabin options available. Our goal in sharing Norwegian Cruise Line tips is to help you navigate these waters with ease. So, let’s dive into the world of NCL cruise hacks , deals, and savings that can save you some money to spend on other fun cruise activities!

When to Book for Optimal Savings

The early bird gets the worm, they say, and this adage holds true in many cases when booking a cruise. Planning ahead can lead to significant Norwegian Cruise Line deals , especially if you can be flexible with your travel dates. Watch for wave season, which typically runs from January to March, when cruise lines offer some of their most attractive promotions of the year. Last-minute bookings can also yield unexpected but welcome NCL cruise savings , although choices may be limited. Remember, timing is everything and a good travel agent can help you save money.

Understanding Cabin Categories

Oceans may converge seamlessly, but cabin categories do not. Each type offers a different cruising experience, and selecting the right one can sometimes make or break your cruise experience. Whether booking a cozy inside room, a convenient cabin by the elevators, or a balcony cabin for those mesmerizing scenic views, your choice should align with your preferences, budget and needs. If you are prone to seasickness, you might find solace in a mid-ship stateroom with less motion. Here lies the art of researching the right cabin to define your epic cruise vacation.

Norwegian Joy Haven suite lounge

Your cabin will be your home away from home on the high seas, so it’s important to pick one that suits your needs and preferences. Here are our most beneficial tips to navigate your cabin selection:

1. Consider your budget and travel style. Inside cabins are the most affordable, offering basic comfort without a view. Oceanview cabins have windows, while balcony cabins come with private outdoor space. Suites are the ultimate indulgence, with ample room and luxurious amenities. Consider how much time you’ll spend in your cabin and prioritize accordingly.

2. Location, location, location! If you suffer from seasickness, opt for a lower deck cabin in the middle of the ship, where motion is minimal. If you are looking for peace and quiet, avoid cabins near noisy areas like nightclubs or the pool deck. Early risers might appreciate cabins towards the front of the ship to catch the sunrise, while night owls might prefer the aft for stunning sunset views.

3. Think about the amenities. Some cabins offer perks like priority dining reservations, spa access, or even private butler service. If these add-ons enhance your cruise experience, factor them into your decision.

4. Don’t forget the little things! Check the cabin layout to ensure it has enough storage space for your luggage. Consider the bedding configuration, especially when traveling with family or friends. If you have any special needs, be sure to inquire about availability.

Leveraging Cruise Line Promotions

Tapping into a treasure trove of promotions is key to getting the most out of the NCL cruise experience. The Latitude Rewards program is a golden ticket for returning guests, offering member-only benefits that accumulate with each voyage. Additionally, offers like Norwegian’s “Free at Sea” give cruisers additional layers of value, providing perks like complimentary beverages, Wi-Fi, and shore excursions, setting the stage for a more inclusive, carefree holiday at sea. Take advantage of these offers and consider working with a travel agent to find the right NCL “Free at Sea” perks for you.

Countdown to Departure: Pre-Cruise Planning Essentials

Travel documentation tips.

First on the agenda is travel documentation. Our advice is to gather all the necessary paperwork as soon as you book your cruise. This is especially true with ensuring you have a current passport. It’s a good idea to keep copies — electronic and physical of reservations and boarding docs— just in case. We usually have documents on our phones, but also printed out and kept in an easily accessible wallet or folder. I often find it easier to find travel documents in this special folder rather than fumbling with my phone trying to remember what email the information is in, etc’. For us, this is especially true when checking in; after all, swift embarkation starts with hassle-free check-in.

Packing Like a Pro

Next, we steer towards the task of packing. Experience has taught us the importance of traveling light yet strategically. Our goal is to pack versatile attire and vital accessories fit for any ship or shore activity. When packing for a Norwegian Cruise, think about including a few game-changers in your luggage, like reusable water bottles for sipping beverages poolside and magnetic hooks to keep our staterooms organized and clutter-free.

Why you need packing cubes

If you’re trying to pack light, including a water bottle may seem like unnecessary bulk in your suitcase, but NCL doesn’t allow you to take water or soda at all, and it can be expensive to purchase, so it just makes sense to pack a water bottle and fill it at the buffet or other designated fill station.

Other essential items include your travel documents (as we mentioned earlier), sunscreen, a hat, comfortable walking shoes, and any necessary medications. Also, consider bringing a USB hub in place of a power strip (don’t pack anything with a surge protector, as those are often not allowed on ships) and magnetic hooks for extra storage in your stateroom.

Arranging Pre-Cruise Accommodations

Finally, consider the night before setting sail. We try to book a nearby hotel when we can afford it to calm any pre-cruise jitters and eliminate rushes to the port. This not only saves us from early morning traffic but also adds an extra day of vacation bliss. You can seek out a hotel with a shuttle to the cruise port, but these days, many travelers opt for ride shares like Uber or Lyft to get to the ship at their leisure.

Life at Sea: Maximizing Your Onboard Experience

Here are a few things we recommend once you’re onboard. These days, Norwegian cruise ships are jam-packed with activities for any type of cruiser. Let’s dive into how you can make the most of these Norwegian Cruise Line activities. Imagine speeding down a go-kart track or reserving your seat at an awe-inspiring show while cruising the high seas.

Norwegian Cruise Line is renowned for its exhilarating onboard activities, like go-kart racing—a high-speed delight you won’t find on just any cruise line.

Norwegian Cruise Line Tips - NCL Bliss Ketchikan Alaska

If you are interested in any of these wildly popular activities, our advice is to secure your spots early. On the first day of your cruise, head straight to the reservations desk or use the onboard kiosks to book these activities and shows. Planning ahead is your passport to a seamless, disappointment-free voyage.

Gastronomy at Sea: Navigating Norwegian Cruise Line’s Dining Options

One thing our recent cruise on Norwegian Escape showed us is that the culinary experience on NCL is as expansive as the ocean itself (so many choices!). For many cruisers, Norwegian’s Freestyle Dining concept has revolutionized dining on the high seas. Let’s dive into the delectable world of NCL dining, where each meal can be a unique adventure.

Freestyle Dining Explained

With the idea of dining without restrictions, Freestyle Dining on Norwegian offers cruisers the flexibility to eat on their schedule. This means they are free to choose anything from early bird breakfast to a midnight snack under the stars. It’s part of the casual yet elegant charm of the Norwegian Cruise Line dining experience. There’s an extensive array of dining venues, from grand dining rooms to intimate eateries, each with its menu and ambiance.

Specialty Dining Versus Complimentary Venues

On an NCL cruise, you have so many choices! First, Specialty Dining venues offer upcharge dining experiences in smaller, more intimate venues. If you don’t want to spend a penny more on your cruise, Complimentary options abound! There are typically several main dining rooms on NCL that are free to enjoy as part of your cruise fare, but if you’re looking for something more – an NCL dining package may pave the way for gourmet moments at upscale specialty restaurants.

NCL Escape - Le Bistro - Norwegian Cruise Line Tips

As mentioned, those eateries require a cover charge but promise a more intimate dining experience. In contrast, complimentary venues invite all passengers to enjoy a vast selection of dishes included in the cruise fare.

Reserving Your Dining Experiences

As we mentioned previously, planning is everything, and when it comes to dining, the early bird indeed gets the worm—or, in this case, the best table. Making reservations for Norwegian Cruise Line dining options can be the golden ticket to a table at sought-after venues. Using the NCL app is a good place to start when looking to book reservations, but on many NCL ships, you can use the screens around the ship to secure a spot.

In essence, with Norwegian Cruise Line dining options , the world—or in this case, the ship—is your oyster. Whether you’re craving teppanyaki, dreaming of an Italian trattoria, or looking forward to a classic steakhouse, the choices are endless!

Exploring New Horizons: Choosing the Right Shore Excursions

With Norwegian Cruise Line, new adventures await at every port of call. It’s more than just leaving the ship; it’s about immersing yourself in unique cultures, experiencing thrilling adventures, and creating memories that last a lifetime. NCL shore excursions are meticulously curated to offer you unparalleled experiences ashore in a safe environment.

Research and Booking Ahead

We can’t stress enough how important it is to research and book your Norwegian Cruise Line shore excursions ahead of time. Savvy NCL excursion planning ensures you’ll secure your spot in the activities that interest you. Plus, it takes the stress out of last-minute decisions, allowing you more leisure time to enjoy the cruise.

Although we often arrange and book shore excursions on our own , there are many advantages to booking shore excursions through Norwegian Cruise Line. Booking a ship-sponsored excursion comes with the security of knowing you’ll make it back to the ship before sail away, and offers some reassurance that the excursion meets NCL’s quality and safety standards. But don’t feel that you MUST book with the ship. Third parties like Shore Excursions Group (affiliate link) offer a return-to-ship guarantee and less crowded excursion options.

Excursion Types for Every Traveler

Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie, a history buff, or someone looking to relax on pristine beaches, there’s an NCL shore experience tailored for you. From helicopter rides over majestic glaciers to snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, it’s a good idea to plan something in each port!

Creating Unforgettable Memories Ashore

A concern we used to hear quite often from people was worrying about being bored on a cruise. The common misconception was “There’s nothing to do but eat on a cruise.” As unfounded as those concerns were back in the day, they are even more so now. Imagine weaving through tropical forests on an ATV, or savoring authentic local cuisine prepared by seasoned chefs—this and much, much more is what you can expect from cruises today. Norwegian Cruise Line shore excursions are not just activities; they’re often passages to cultural discovery and personal enrichment. Whether you are a GoPro-wielding adrenaline junkie like us, or a stop-and-smell-the-roses kind of person, there’s an excursion for you.

Center Stage: Entertainment Aboard Norwegian Cruise Line

If catching a Broadway-style show is your idea of fun you won’t be let down on a Norwegian cruise. There is a bevy of onboard entertainment options. Comedy, Deal or No Deal, Wheel of Fortune, Howl at the Moon singalongs…the options are endless!

HOT TIP for the Broadway-style shows: if you want a prime spot for these shows, stop by the Box Office on day one. These shows can fill up fast, so don’t overlook this as one of our top Norwegian Cruise Line tips.

This next NCL fave is a restaurant, bar, and entertainment venue rolled into one! O’Sheehan’s Irish Pub invites passengers to a freestyle ambiance that never sleeps, open 24/7. It’s the perfect spot to soak in the lively atmosphere, play some darts or arcade games, and enjoy a late-night snack or cocktail. It gets pretty lively at O’Sheehan’s, so get ready for some fun. NO reservations required!

We mentioned go-karts previously, but for those seeking a rush of adrenaline, newer vessels like the Norwegian Viva, Prima, Joy, Encore & Bliss take excitement to new levels. I’ve done this , and I’ve got to say there’s nothing like feeling the wind in your hair (or, uh, helmet) as you speed around a go-kart track at sea. It’s truly an electrifying activity that’s sure to be a hit with everyone in your family, available for an additional cost. Fun fact: the go-karts are electric, so they don’t produce any sound or pollution.

  • Broadway-Style Shows: Book early to secure your seat.
  • Live Music : NCL is the perfect cruise line for live music lovers. From famous rock hits at Syd Norman’s Pour house to Howl at the Moon, the Dueling Piano show, your evenings will be FULL of live music entertainment.
  • Deck Parties: NCL ROCKS the deck parties, and they are not to be missed. On day 1, hit the sailaway deck party by the main pool, and pack some neon clothes for the H2Glow celebration.
  • O’Sheehan’s Irish Pub: Enjoy a live show, a pint, or a pub meal anytime, day or night.
  • Go-kart Track: Experience go-kart racing at sea, with options for single and tandem karts.

From captivating theatrical performances to exhilarating onboard activities, Norwegian Cruise Line ensures every moment at sea is filled with opportunities for fun, laughter, and unforgettable memories. Trust us, you won’t be bored.

Staying Connected: Internet and App Services at Sea

For many of us, staying connected while cruising the high seas is as essential as our evening cocktail. Whether to share envy-inducing vacation photos or keep up with important emails, Norwegian Cruise Line Wi-Fi helps you stay in touch with the world while on the ship. Let’s explore how we can navigate the waters of NCL’s Wi-Fi packages and make the best use of the NCL app .

Navigating Norwegian’s Wi-Fi Packages

Choosing the right Wi-Fi package to meet your needs is crucial. Most cruisers bundle their WiFi package with the Free at Sea Promotion and will have no need to purchase additional connectivity. BUT, if you’ve booked a “cruise-only fare”, you may need to purchase a package.

NCL understands this, presenting two NCL Wi-Fi packages tailored to different demands. Are you an occasional browser or a digital nomad? With options ranging from pay-as-you-go to unlimited data, a package is designed for your online habits.

Utilizing the Norwegian Cruise Line App for Maximum Benefit

The NCL app can be your trusty digital companion on your voyage. From making dinner reservations at the most popular onboard restaurants to booking that must-see shore excursion, the app simplifies it all. Access to daily schedules and ship information is at your fingertips. Using the NCL app can be a great way to stay one step ahead in planning your perfect day at sea.

With the NCL App, you can:

  • Preview & book Shore Excursions
  • Preview restaurants and make dining reservations

Before Your Cruise

  • Purchase onboard gifts including wine, flowers, and treats
  • Check-in online and save time at the pier
  • On the day of departure, access your E-Docs and directions to the pier

*Calling and Messaging Package has a nominal one-time fee for making unlimited onboard calls and messages during your cruise.

Family Fun: Keeping Kids Engaged on a Norwegian Cruise

Taking a Norwegian Cruise can be a gateway to an abundance of family memories. Norwegian ships are loaded with a variety of amenities and activities specifically geared towards kids and families, ensuring that every family member, from the tiniest tot to the coolest teen, finds their own slice of paradise at sea.

Kids’ Clubs and Family-Friendly Activities

At the heart of Norwegian Cruise Line’s family-friendly offerings are the Kids’ Clubs , which are designed to inspire, entertain, and engage children across different age groups. From themed parties and educational workshops to interactive games and sports competitions, the clubs provide kids with the opportunity to have fun and make new friends. Here’s a look at some of NCL’s kid’s programs:

  • Splash Academy – for youngsters aged 3-12, featuring creative play, sports, and circus school.
  • Entourage – a teens-only hangout zone where those aged 13-17 can connect and socialize.
  • Guppies Program – for our smallest guests under 3 years, with sensory play sessions and parent-child activities.

Let’s not forget the family-friendly activities beyond the clubs. There are aqua parks with exhilarating waterslides, family trivia, scavenger hunts, and poolside movies that make Norwegian Cruise Line family cruising an exceptional experience at sea.

Norwegian Cruise Line Tips for Family Accommodation

Choosing the right accommodation for your family is crucial for comfort and convenience. Whether you’re looking for a cozy inside room or a spacious suite, NCL’s staterooms are designed to cater to families of all sizes and needs. Here’s a table to guide you through stateroom options:

Norwegian Cruise Line Tips: Insider Secrets for a Flawless Voyage

We’ve gathered some of the most effective NCL cruise hacks to help your trip be as magnificent as the destinations you’ll explore.

First, let’s talk about loyalty perks. If you haven’t already, sign up for Latitudes Rewards . These reward programs offer attractive benefits and exclusive discounts that enhance your cruise without stretching the budget.

  • Complimentary onboard discounts
  • Prioritized check-in and boarding and priority debarkation
  • Invitations to members-only cocktail parties

Next, consider your cabin’s electric outlets. Outlets can be limited on NCL’s ships, so a savvy cruiser never forgets a USB hub (don’t pack anything with a surge protector, as those are often not allowed on ships).

To ensure you never miss a ship departure when you’ve ventured ashore, we always keep a wristwatch set to the ship’s time zone. Ships operate on their own time, which can be different from the port, and cell phones might automatically adjust to local time, potentially causing confusion.

One final bit of advice is to get to know the ship’s layout. It saves time and makes it easier to join in on all the fun onboard activities and dining experiences without feeling lost. Ensuring you’re acquainted with common areas, entertainment venues, and your favorite spots for relaxation is key to a worry-free cruise.

Conclusion & Final Reminders

In wrapping up our extensive journey of insights and advice, it’s clear that embarking on a voyage with Norwegian Cruise Line is more than mere travel—it’s the beginning of an extraordinary adventure. By leveraging these Norwegian Cruise Line travel tips, your vacation transforms into a tapestry of rich experiences. Our goal with these Norwegian Cruise Line tips and recommendations is to streamline your cruise from beginning to end. We encourage you to plan wisely and be prepared for limitless adventures that define the spirit of cruising.

Remember the importance of packing cruise essentials — fine-tuning the details of your cabin selection, making sure your travel documents are in order, and downloading the NCL app to keep your cruise information at your fingertips. Onboard experiences, from exhilarating entertainment to divine dining, await your indulgence. Beyond the ship’s hull, a world of shore excursions beckons for exploration and the creation of timeless memories.

From us to you, remember that a seamless journey on the sea is the product of both careful planning and the freedom to embrace the unexpected. With these Norwegian Cruise Line tips , we trust your NCL getaway will be nothing short of fabulous. Bon voyage, and may the horizons ahead be filled with amazement, relaxation, and joy beyond measure.

Norwegian Cruise Line food: The ultimate cruise guide to restaurants and dining on board

Donna Heiderstadt

Norwegian Cruise Line has always been a bit of a rebel when it comes to food.

Back in 2000, the company introduced the concept of Freestyle Cruising, and with it, the idea of Freestyle Dining. Guests no longer were assigned to traditional early or late dinner seatings in the main dining rooms on Norwegian Cruise Line 's ships, but rather could decide when they wanted to eat and with whom.

The cruise line also began to roll out specialty restaurants — smaller, cuisine-specific dining venues such as the French-themed Le Bistro and Cagney's Steakhouse — that passengers could reserve for an additional cover charge.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Today, passengers will find more than three dozen dining options, including 21 that require a cover charge or feature a la carte pricing, on board NCL's 17 ships. While the cruise fare covers a number of restaurants, specialty restaurants requiring an extra charge are popular, and new specialty restaurants are introduced with each class of ship.

The onboard restaurant lineup also varies by ship, with those in the Prima, Breakaway and Breakaway Plus classes having a larger selection than the line's older, smaller ships.

How do you make sense of it all? We've compiled a rundown of all the Norwegian Cruise Line food options, from coffee and gelato shops to a la carte restaurants where the tab can easily top $150 for two. Here's what's included, what you'll pay extra for and the ships that feature each dining venue.

American Diner

norwegian cruise line travel tips

Included; lunch and dinner

This 1950s-inspired diner featured on all six ships in NCL's Breakaway and Breakaway Plus classes offers quintessential midcentury comfort foods — from cheeseburgers and meatloaf to chicken pot pie and spaghetti and meatballs. Desserts include bread pudding and carrot walnut cake. The food is now all free (Norwegian made this change in early 2024), but if you want to wash it down with a milkshake, you'll need to pay up.

Available on : Norwegian Bliss, Breakaway, Encore, Escape, Getaway and Joy

Atrium Cafe

A la carte; coffee and snacks

Atrium Cafe is a coffee and cocktail bar that serves hot and cold beverages along with a selection of cookies, pastries and other snacks. Alternately, some NCL ships feature Starbucks cafes.

Available on : Norwegian Escape, Jewel, Spirit, Star and Sun

Cadillac Diner

Included; breakfast, lunch and dinner

You'll have to head to Hawaii to enjoy the barbecue pulled pork sliders, pretzel bites, Reuben sandwiches and more served up retro-style in the Cadillac Diner. This venue, with its funky black-and-white checkered floor and vinyl booths wedged between two sections of a vintage red sedan, is found exclusively on Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America. It's open 24 hours a day, and everything is complimentary except for the milkshakes.

Available on : Pride of America

Cagney's Steakhouse

A la carte; dinner

One of NCL's most popular specialty restaurants, Cagney's features a classic steakhouse menu with plenty of options for seafood lovers as well. The stars are the cuts of aged certified Angus beef (rib-eye, filet mignon, porterhouse and New York strip) with a choice of sauces and side dishes such as truffle mashed potatoes and sauteed garlic mushrooms. Other options include cedar-plank steelhead trout and double-cut Australian lamb chops. Save room for the OMG Caramel-Butterscotch Cheesecake.

Available : Fleetwide

Chinese restaurant

Included; dinner, plus lunch on select days

If you're craving shrimp dumplings or a bowl of stir-fried noodles with beef, a number of older Norwegian Cruise Line ships feature a complimentary Chinese restaurant where you can get your fix. Names vary by ship — you'll find Bamboo on Dawn, Shanghai's on Epic, Orchid Garden on Gem, Jasmine Garden on Jade, Chin Chin on Jewel, Lotus Garden on Pearl, Silk on Spirit, Ginza on Star and East Meets West on Pride of America — but the menus are similar.

Available on : Norwegian Dawn, Epic, Gem, Jade, Jewel, Pearl, Pride of America, Spirit and Star

Coco's

norwegian cruise line travel tips

A la carte; snacks and treats

A cross between an ice cream parlor and a candy shop, Coco's features an array of treats — chocolates from around the world, milkshakes, crepes and more — to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Available on : Norwegian Bliss and Encore

Dolce Gelato

When it's midafternoon and the sun in the Caribbean or Mediterranean is blazing, you can head to this takeaway counter on Deck 8 for a cup or cone of irresistibly creamy gelato.

Available on : Norwegian Bliss, Encore, Escape and Getaway

Food Republic

A la carte; dinner and lunch on sea days

This globally inspired specialty restaurant with an Asian-Latin fusion theme remains popular almost a decade after its debut on Norwegian Escape. You'll want to order multiple dishes to share family-style from Food Republic 's menu sections: Sushi Bar (eight different rolls), Hand Helds (everything from pork belly bao buns to kanpachi wonton tacos), Sharing Is Caring (grilled shishito peppers, spicy Korean fried chicken, salt and pepper calamari and more), Noodles/Rice/Soups (shrimp pad thai to Vietnamese Pho Tai) and Sugar Pump (desserts featuring green tea, chocolate and ginger caramel).

Available on : Norwegian Bliss, Encore, Escape, Joy, Prima and Viva

Garden Cafe

Sometimes, the buffet is the answer. It's perfect when you get on board the first day and need to grab a quick bite before you explore the ship or when you arrive back after a daylong shore excursion and want to refuel right away without having to change clothes. Garden Cafe offers plenty of options, including carved meats or grilled fish with assorted side dishes, a salad bar, soups, pasta, burgers and fries, and desserts. Most items are precooked and kept warm under heat lamps, so it's not the freshest option, but it's usually packed at breakfast and lunch with guests who like the all-you-can-eat portions.

Available : Fleetwide (except Norwegian Prima and Viva)

Cover charge; dinner

This is a slightly more elevated version of NCL's Teppanyaki restaurant. You'll be seated with other guests around a grill, and as you dine on edamame, miso soup and seaweed salad, the chef will prepare your entree (a choice of chicken, beef, seafood or teriyaki-glazed tofu or one of four combinations) with great flair. These fresh-from-the-grill proteins are served with garlic fried rice and grilled vegetables, and the dessert that follows is either a green tea cake or fruit sashimi.

Available on : Norwegian Prima and Viva

Hudson's

norwegian cruise line travel tips

This circular, light-filled space debuted on Norwegian Prima in 2022 as a new main dining room option. It features the same daily rotating menu as the second main dining room, the Commodore Room, but what sets this venue apart is its bright-and-airy ambience, courtesy of 270-degree floor-to-ceiling windows.

Indulge Food Hall

This new casual dining concept, also introduced on Norwegian Prima, quickly became a popular alternative to the Surfside Cafe buffet (see below) for both lunch and dinner; at breakfast, it serves a similar but more limited menu as Surfside. The appeal of Indulge Food Hall is the variety — there are more than four dozen menu items from seven vendors: Tapas, The Garden, Nudls, The Latin Quarter, Q Texas Smokehouse, Seaside Rotisserie and Tamara — served in small-plate portions. You can enjoy chicken korma, pad thai, pulled pork, crispy fried okra, a mushroom tostada and bacon-wrapped medjool dates, all ordered from your table via a tablet.

La Cucina was Norwegian's sole Italian specialty restaurant until the launch of Onda by Scarpetta on Norwegian Encore in 2018, and the two restaurants are quite different. La Cucina is the more traditional, featuring classic Italian favorites — caprese salad, fried calamari, spaghetti carbonara, pizza, chicken cacciatore and osso buco alla Milanese — while Onda's menu focuses on more finessed modern Italian dishes.

Available on : Norwegian Bliss, Breakaway, Dawn, Epic, Escape, Gem, Getaway, Jade, Joy, Pearl, Sky, Star and Sun

Like Cagney's, NCL's French fine-dining restaurant is a longtime favorite that's featured fleetwide (it's called Jefferson's Bistro on Pride of America). Popular with couples for special occasion dinners, Le Bistro features everything from steak tartare and escargot to braised lamb shank and roasted duck breast. With its a la carte pricing, this is among the richest (and costliest) dining experiences on board, especially if accompanied by a bottle of Champagne or other French wine. Le Bistro restaurants on Norwegian Prima and Viva are especially atmospheric, with dramatic large-scale chandeliers and elegant ivory-and-blue decor.

Vibrant decor and sophisticated Mexican cuisine that goes beyond the usual Tex-Mex fare make Los Lobos an appealing option if you're sailing on one of the six ships that feature it. The guacamole, made fresh tableside, is a must. Other menu options include Mexican-style shrimp ceviche, grilled mahi-mahi tacos, nopales (cactus) salad, chicken mole enchiladas and cochinita pibil (slow-braised pork). Top it all off with a tres leches cake with coconut cream.

Available on : Norwegian Bliss, Dawn, Encore, Prima, Sun and Viva

Main dining room

Norwegian Cruise Line ships feature at least two main dining rooms, and sometimes even three. Names vary by ship — although the six Breakaway Class and Breakaway Plus Class ships all feature the Manhattan Room, plus Savor and Taste, and Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva have the Commodore Room and Hudson's. Menus change daily throughout the cruise and feature a selection of American and international dishes.

Moderno Churrascaria

Carnivores can devour their fill of a variety of meats the traditional Brazilian way as gauchos carve and serve cuts of beef, lamb, pork, sausage and chicken right at the table. Those who prefer to limit their meat intake can fill up instead at the salad bar, which features 43 items. White rice, black beans, sauteed mushrooms, garlic mashed potatoes, fried yucca and Brazilian cheese bread are also served as side dishes.

Available on : Norwegian Breakaway, Dawn, Epic, Escape, Getaway, Jade, Jewel, Pearl, Star and Sun

Nama Sushi & Sashimi

Another new restaurant to debut on Norwegian Prima, Nama Sushi & Sashimi doesn't veer too far from its name, serving six different sushi rolls (from yellowtail to rock shrimp), three sashimi options and a variety of appetizers, most of which feature raw fish. Even the dessert — pineapple carpaccio — is uncooked.

Ocean Blue is an elegant seafood restaurant featured on NCL's six Breakaway Class and Breakaway Plus Class ships. (It's known as Bayamo by Ocean Blue on Norwegian Escape.) Guests can savor appetizers such as crabcakes, pan-seared scallops and an ahi tuna and avocado tower, followed by steamed or grilled lobster, seafood linguini or simply grilled fish (salmon, tuna, cod or sea bass) served with a choice of sauces. All Ocean Blue restaurants are located on Deck 8 and feature indoor and outdoor seating on The Waterfront.

Onda by Scarpetta

norwegian cruise line travel tips

Modern Italian cuisine is the centerpiece of Onda by Scarpetta, another of NCL's elevated specialty dining options and the sister restaurant to land-based Scarpetta. Introduced in 2019 on Norwegian Encore and more recently rolled out on the line's newest ships (plus at least one older vessel), Onda by Scarpetta indulges with antipasti starters such as burrata, short ribs and braised octopus, a half dozen pasta options (including pappardelle Bolognese and Scarpetta's famous spaghetti with tomato and basil) and finally gets around to secondis such as veal Milanese and grilled branzino. The main question will be: Do you have room for dessert?

Available on : Norwegian Encore, Prima, Spirit and Viva

O'Sheehan's Bar & Grill

Included; 24-hour dining

This lively and social pub-style eatery overlooks the buzzing three-deck Atrium on Breakaway Class ships and is also featured on seven older NCL ships. It's open 24 hours a day and serves comfort classics such as burgers, fish and chips, chicken wings, beef chili and loaded nachos.

Available on : Norwegian Breakaway, Dawn, Epic, Escape, Gem, Getaway, Jade, Jewel, Pearl and Star

One of NCL's newest dining venues, Palomar celebrates the Mediterranean with a menu featuring lots of Greek influences. Seafood dishes outnumber meat options and include tuna crudo, grilled prawns, Mediterranean sea bass with chickpeas and saffron puree, and sea scallops with prosciutto, le puy lentils, clams and pistachio pesto. Desserts include Greek yogurt sorbet with orange custard pie.

Pincho Tapas Bar

This unique Spanish-style tapas bar is found on only one ship in the Breakaway Class and fits in with the ship's overall Miami/Latin-influenced theme. Head to Pinchos if you're looking to enjoy small-plate dishes such as blue crab salad and bacon-wrapped dates, as well as chorizo, calamari, shrimp, scallops and more served a la plancha. Wash it all down with a Spanish red, a glass of sangria or a signature Matador cocktail.

Available on : Norwegian Escape

Included; casual lunch

Three Norwegian ships feature a pool grill (all with different names) that's open for lunch and late afternoon snacks. The venue serves casual fare such as burgers, hot dogs and french fries.

Available on : Norwegian Dawn, Gem and Pride of America

Q Texas Smokehouse

norwegian cruise line travel tips

This barbecue eatery debuted on Norwegian Bliss in 2018, and its menu features smoked meats (pit classics like brisket, pulled pork and beef short ribs), as well as calorific sides (loaded fries, crispy fried okra, onion rings and macaroni and cheese). You can also enjoy live country music and even sweat off the excess calories by dancing (before ordering pecan pie or peach cobbler for dessert). A more limited menu is available for free as part of Indulge Food Hall on Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva — but you'll need to dance elsewhere.

Available on : Norwegian Bliss, Encore and Joy

Savor (and Taste)

These two restaurants on all six Breakaway Class and Breakaway Plus Class ships are essentially smaller-scale main dining rooms. They are located across from each other on Deck 6 and feature lunch and dinner menus that change daily.

Shanghai's Noodle Bar

This casual dining venue serves a selection of freshly prepared and wok-fried Asian noodle and rice dishes, from pork pot stickers and steamed vegetable dumplings to Singapore-style rice noodles and udon noodles in broth.

Available on : Norwegian Breakaway, Epic and Getaway

Included; casual pub fare

While most NCL ships, with the exception of Pride of America, have a pub-style complimentary eatery — either O'Sheehan's Bar & Grill or The Local Bar & Grill — one older outlier has Sports Bar. Like the other eateries, this venue is free and features comfort classics such as Reuben sandwiches, chicken wings and fish and chips.

Available on : Norwegian Sun

norwegian cruise line travel tips

A la carte; coffee, breakfast and snacks

NCL wasn't the first cruise line to feature the well-known coffee chain (that would be Royal Caribbean), but it now has the most Starbucks cafes on board its ships. Guests can purchase frappuccinos, lattes, cold brews and many of the other coffee, tea and breakfast and pastry items that are available on land.

Available on : Norwegian Bliss, Breakaway, Encore, Epic, Gem, Getaway, Joy, Prima, Sky and Viva

Surfside Cafe & Grill

With the debut of Norwegian Prima, NCL evolved its buffet-style restaurant (known as Garden Cafe on most ships) to Surfside Cafe & Grill. The Deck 17 space is notably smaller, though, due to the fact that Prima Class ships also feature Indulge Food Hall and The Local Bar & Grill as complimentary casual dining options. The reduced size does result in some overcrowding, especially at breakfast, with overflow guests directed to find seats in the adjacent Food Republic space.

All but three NCL ships feature Teppanyaki , a Benihana-style Japanese restaurant where the live-action preparation is integral to the experience. You'll be seated around a grill as your chef prepares your entree (either chicken, beef, seafood or teriyaki-glazed tofu or one of four combinations) with dramatic flair. You'll start with miso soup and seaweed salad, and all entrees are served with garlic fried rice and grilled vegetables. Dessert is either a green tea cake or fruit sashimi. Hasuki replaces Teppanyaki on Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva.

Available on : Norwegian Bliss, Breakaway, Dawn, Encore, Epic, Escape, Gem, Getaway, Jade, Jewel, Joy, Pearl, Spirit, Star and Sun

The Bake Shop

A sugar rush is practically guaranteed at The Bake Shop, a Deck 8 confectionery selling assorted bonbons (with fillings from passion fruit to praline), cupcakes (more than a dozen options, including red velvet, chocolate-pistachio and lemon merengue) and French macarons in a dozen flavors.

Available on : Norwegian Bliss, Breakaway, Encore and Getaway

The Great Outdoors

norwegian cruise line travel tips

Included; lunch

This outdoor casual buffet on seven Norwegian Cruise Line ships has a come-as-you-are dress code and serves burgers, hot dogs, fries and other items for guests who want to enjoy some ocean scenery with their lunch.

Available on : Norwegian Epic, Gem, Jade, Jewel, Pearl, Sky and Sun

The Haven Restaurant

Included for guests booked in The Haven; breakfast, lunch and dinner

If you book a suite in The Haven, the exclusive ship-within-a-ship enclave found on every new NCL ship since it was introduced on Norwegian Epic in 2010, you'll enjoy access to The Haven Restaurant. Open only to Haven guests, it serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Menus here do not change, but there are generally enough options (a dozen appetizers and 10 entrees at dinner, for example) that you can dine here multiple times without repeating a dish or running out of interesting dishes to try.

Available on : Norwegian Bliss, Breakaway, Encore, Epic, Escape, Getaway, Joy, Prima and Viva

The Local Bar & Grill

The Local Bar & Grill is a favored hangout for sports telecasts and trivia contests, as well as a go-to for guests when anytime-hunger strikes. Like its comfort food sibling O'Sheehans's Bar & Grill, its 24-hour menu features breakfast, all-day and late-night items that include omelets, cheeseburgers, chicken wings, fish and chips and loaded nachos.

Available on : Norwegian Bliss, Encore, Joy, Prima, Sky, Spirit and Viva

The Raw Bar

norwegian cruise line travel tips

Located adjacent to Ocean Blue, this casual option with counter seating serves oysters, clams, shellfish and crudos (salmon tartare, black sea bass ceviche and more), as well as wines by the glass and a selection of desserts.

Available on : Norwegian Breakaway and Getaway

Topsiders Bar & Grill

Included; casual pool grill with varying hours

Five older NCL ships feature Topsiders Bar & Grill, a poolside venue serving burgers, hot dogs, french fries and other takeaway items.

Available on : Norwegian Gem, Jewel, Pearl, Sky and Star

Wasabi (or Sushi)

This contemporary sushi bar — called either Wasabi or Sushi, depending on the ship — is the spot for cocktails, sake and Japanese specialties that include sesame seaweed salad, sushi and specialty rolls, nigiri, sashimi and yakitori. On Prima Class ships, you'll find Nama Sushi & Sashimi with a different menu.

Available on : Norwegian Breakaway, Dawn, Epic, Gem, Getaway, Jade, Jewel, Pearl, Spirit, Star and Sun

FAQs about NCL dining

Is norwegian cruise line's food free.

You can dine for free during your cruise at any of the complimentary dining venues on board NCL ships. There are typically four to six included dining venues per ship, several of which serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Is there a main dining room?

Yes, all NCL ships feature a main dining room — some have as many as three — and Freestyle Dining means you can choose when to dine (within the specified breakfast, lunch and dinner hours).

Do I need to make reservations?

You do not need to make reservations for the main dining rooms or casual venues like O'Sheehan's or the buffet. However, you can make reservations for the main dining rooms if you'd prefer to eat at a specific time and wish to avoid long wait times during the most popular dinner hours.

Sit-down specialty restaurants always require a reservation. The sooner you can make one, the better. You can book specialty dining online via the cruise line's website or app or by calling Norwegian reservations. You can also reserve when you get on board, but you risk that the more popular eateries will already be fully booked, especially during the peak summer and holiday periods. Walk-ins are permitted if space is available, but you'll likely need to show up early or late to snag a table.

Does Norwegian offer room service?

Yes, NCL offers 24-hour room service, but you will be charged a convenience fee of up to $9.95 per delivery, with the exception of morning coffee, continental breakfast and orders placed by guests staying in The Haven. A 20% gratuity and beverage service charge will also be added for noncomplimentary beverages and special occasion items delivered to your room.

How much does specialty dining cost?

It varies by restaurant. At venues with a la carte pricing, such as Cagney's, Ocean Blue, Onda by Scarpetta and Le Bistro, it's easy to rack up a bill of $80 per person, not including beverages. NCL's sushi restaurants are also a la carte, as is Food Republic. Two people with an average appetite can dine at both for around $50 to $60 per person, not including beverages. Other venues, such as Teppanyaki and Moderno Churrascaria, feature a set cover charge of $59 per person.

Does NCL offer specialty dining packages?

Yes and if you like a variety of cuisines and plan to dine at two or more extra-charge restaurants, purchasing a specialty dining package makes sense.

These range in price from $99 per person for a two-meal package to $469 per person for a 14-meal package. The price per meal gets lower the more meals you purchase — from $49.50 per dinner on a two-meal package to $33.50 per dinner for 14 meals. Even the four-meal package at $169 per person is a good deal at $42.25 per dinner, given the a la carte pricing greatly exceeds that (for three courses) at most specialty restaurants and eateries with cover charges are priced at $59 per person.

Also, a select number of specialty dining meals are typically included with NCL's Free at Sea booking promotion .

What about service charges?

A 20% gratuity and specialty service charge will automatically be added to the cost of your specialty dining package when you purchase it or to your onboard dining charge if you pay a la carte or a flat cover charge.

Cruising With a Baby: Top Tips for New Families

Mother and child time

Think you need to wait until your kids are a little older to enjoy a cruise? Think again! Norwegian offers an abundance of family-friendly cruises that are sure to be a memorable getaway for the whole family. Cruising with a baby has its challenges, but Norwegian has thought of everything so that even new families can enjoy a much-needed getaway.

Ready to start planning? Explore all Family Friendly cruises .

Upgrading Your Room Is Worth the Cost

Cruise alaska on norwegian bliss & norwegian encore.

Gone are the days of cramped staterooms. When you cruise with Norwegian, you can choose the size room that best suits your family size. A balcony cabin will come in handy when you want to enjoy the ocean views while the baby is napping. Multi-family staterooms can hold up to eight, so you can bring along the grandparents for some new baby bonding (and maybe talk them into babysitting for a night).

Multi-room staterooms with balconies, living rooms, and full bathrooms give you all the room you need when cruising with a baby. The connecting staterooms are perfect for larger families who prefer to be close, but not too close. Upgrade to one of the exclusive enclave rooms for your own concierge and 24-hour butler. Packing with a new baby can be overwhelming, but that's another good reason to upgrade. The extra room will come in handy for all those extras. These rooms are where you'll create lasting, cherished memories of your new family's cruise.

Norwegian Joy also takes you on an immersive fall cruise with stops in Maine, Cape Breton Island, and Prince Edward Island. You and your family will enjoy the two-level racetrack or laser tag centers when you're not enjoying nature's fall show. Squeeze in a little adult time at the award-winning casino or memorable nightclub with its own acrobatics show.

Family Friends Make the Trip More Fun

Access to onboard resources and programs means making friends with other families is a breeze. Norwegian's Guppies program is designed for kids from six months to three years. This program is specifically designed for parent-child time on your cruise vacation and are geared toward new families, which also makes them a great place to meet other new moms and dads on board.

Youth Programs Offer a Little Relief

Norwegian's complimentary youth programs mean you can drop the older kids off for a day of fun while you focus on a little "me" time. We could all use a kid-free meal or a day at the spa. Norwegian Cruise programs are designed to entertain your children. They'll be surrounded by other kids in their age range while they enjoy exciting entertainment in a safe, supervised environment.

Splash Academy focuses on a creative, energetic experience for kids from 3 to 12 years. Sending your teens off for an afternoon of video games, art, sports, and music just means you get more time to relax and unwind. Themed party nights are also a favorite among older kids.

Take Advantage of Quiet Retreats

Cruises often get a reputation for being lively. However, there are plenty of quiet retreats on Norwegian cruises, including atriums, card rooms, and decks lined with lounge chairs. Grab a seat on one of the waterfront lounges to enjoy a few moments of peace and quiet. Even watching the people on the onboard jogging walking track found on many Norwegian cruises is a great way to get outdoors with a new baby.

Know What To Pack

Knowing what to pack can help you keep luggage to a minimum. A compact stroller and baby carrier will come in handy for exploring the cruise. A comfy travel crib gives the baby a safe, secure place to sleep. Don't forget enough outfits for each day of the cruise, plus a few outfit changes. An inflatable bathtub is a must since most staterooms don't come with a bathtub.

Losing bottles is easy, so you can never have too many. Finally, don't forget to bring sunscreen that's safe for children under a year. A favorite stuffed animal or pacifier can also be a lifesaver as they get used to their new environment. Sun-proof outfits are also perfect for babies.

Go with the flow

Go With the Flow

A cruise vacation can be enjoyable with a baby. Going with the flow and taking each day as it comes is a great way to manage expectations and learn how to cruise with your baby. Try to time family activities around the baby's mood for the day. Babies may sleep more after an exciting day cruising with Norwegian. Keeping the fun to a minimum before arriving at a busy port stop can also make the day go smoother.

Choose a Norwegian cruise closer to home with a shorter schedule to test out the waters. Cruising the Caribbean and New England are both great options. Chances are, you'll have so much fun that you'll book your next cruise soon after you return!

Norwegian welcomes families with babies, as long as they're six months or older. With a little preparation and choosing the most family-friendly Norwegian cruises , you can have a memorable cruise vacation as a new family. Can't decide on your first family cruise destination? The 9 classes of Norwegian Cruise Line ships, explained

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Some cruise lines — Viking , for instance — have fleets where many of the ships have the same basic design. Norwegian Cruise Line is not one of them.

If you’re thinking of booking a Norwegian cruise,  an important thing to know is that there is a wide variation in the size and style of the vessels in the line’s fleet.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

Four of Norwegian’s 19 ships — Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Encore — are among the 30 biggest ships in the world. As such, they’re loaded with huge numbers of cabins, restaurants, bars, showrooms and deck-top amusements.

They are, in a nutshell, floating megaresorts .

The line also operates smaller vessels that barely crack the top 100 list of biggest cruise ships. These ships generally have fewer venues and attractions than the bigger ships. However, they still offer a lot for cruisers. Norwegian is a line known for packing oodles of restaurants, bars and entertainment on its vessels — even its smaller ones.

The good news for those of you trying to get a handle on all the options within the Norwegian fleet is that the line’s 19 ships can be bunched into just eight groups of vessels with similar amenities. If you know one member of the group, you know them all.

Each of these groups — known as “classes” in cruise industry lingo — is made up of ships that were constructed around the same time in the same basic design.

An introduction to Norwegian Cruise Line ships

Smaller only than Royal Caribbean , Carnival Cruise Line and MSC Cruises , Norwegian has become increasingly known for some of the biggest, most amenity-filled vessels at sea. As mentioned above, though, the line doesn’t just operate giant ships. More than half its fleet comprises vessels that, by today’s standards, are considered almost midsize.

Indeed, Norwegian is essentially two cruise lines in one. The line’s nine newest ships are big, bustling floating megaresorts that can carry upward of 3,000 to 4,000 passengers at double occupancy (even more with every berth filled). At around 144,000 to nearly 170,000 tons, all nine currently rank among the 50 biggest cruise ships in the world (although their rankings will shift downward as more big ships debut).

Norwegian’s 10 older ships, by contrast, are much more modest in size, measuring around 75,000 to 94,000 tons and carrying closer to 2,000 passengers at double occupancy.

Norwegian thus appeals both to cruisers who like a giant resort vibe and those who prefer a resort experience that is more modest. The key, depending on your tastes, is getting on the right ship in the fleet for you.

On the big-ship end of the spectrum, Norwegian’s four new Breakaway Plus vessels — Norwegian Encore , Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Escape — are the line’s premier offerings.

One step down in size from the Breakaway Plus ships are the still-quite-large Breakaway-class ships — Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway — and the one-of-a-kind Norwegian Epic.

The smallest of the line’s big ships are the recently unveiled Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima. They are the first two of a new series of six vessels that will transform the brand. Measuring about 143,500 tons a piece, these two new ships are about 17% smaller than Norwegian’s biggest vessels.

Norwegian’s 10 smaller vessels break down into five classes, though many are roughly the same size and offer similar amenities.

Prima class

Ships in class: Norwegian Prima (2022), Norwegian Viva (2023).

Size: 143,535 tons.

The Prima class of ships is the latest and greatest at Norwegian Cruise Line — the vessels that every NCL fan wants to book.

Only two ships in the series (Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima ) are currently in operation. Four more sister vessels are on order for delivery by 2027.

Under development since 2017, these ships mark Norwegian’s first new class of vessel in more than a decade. At 143,535 tons, they are notably smaller than the ships the line has been adding in recent years — a factor that will give them access to smaller ports around the world.

That said, Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Prima and their coming sisters still are relatively big ships that pack a lot of over-the-top amenities. Both Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima have ridiculously big go-kart tracks spread over three decks (a cruise industry first). The ships also boast The Drop, a 10-story dry slide that the line says provides more G-force than an accelerating Formula One race car.

Additionally, the vessels each are home to a three-deck theater that converts into a Las Vegas-style nightclub, along with a list of interactive, real-life game shows, including at-sea versions of “The Price Is Right,” “Supermarket Sweep,” “Press Your Luck” and “Beat the Clock.”

Related: I’ve been on nearly every Norwegian ship afloat; here are my first impressions of Norwegian Prima

Still, the new Prima class is about more than flashy entertainment and activities. It marks a more upscale turn for the line. Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima offer the largest variety of suite categories (13) for a large ocean ship, the largest three-bedroom suites of any new cruise vessel and the brand’s largest-ever inside, ocean-view and balcony cabins.

The entire back of each of the ships is dedicated to an upscale, “ship-within-a-ship” private suite area called The Haven that rises eight decks high and includes 107 suites, a sprawling private indoor lounge area, private outdoor lounge and pool areas, and a private restaurant. Other vessels feature The Haven areas, but none as big as this one.

In addition, the public areas of Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima feel more spacious than many of the other 17 ships in the Norwegian fleet. And, indeed, they are. The Prima-class ships are being built with a higher ratio of space to passengers, which itself is an upscale touch.

Norwegian Cruise Line also says the Prima-class vessels offer the most outdoor deck space of any new cruise ship — including more total pool deck space than any other ships in the brand’s fleet.

Note that the last four ships in the Prima-class series, due to debut between 2025 and 2027, are being redesigned to be bigger than the first two ships in the series.

Breakaway Plus class

Ships in class: Norwegian Encore (2019), Norwegian Bliss (2018), Norwegian Joy (2017), Norwegian Escape (2015).

Size: 164,600 to 169,145 tons.

These are the Norwegian ships you go on if you’re a fan of megaresorts.

While not quite as big as Royal Caribbean’s giant Oasis-class ships , Norwegian’s Breakaway Plus-class vessels are firmly in the pantheon of the world’s cruising giants. They are the Norwegian ships most packed with restaurants, bars, entertainment and over-the-top attractions. There are so many of these things that you won’t be able to do it all in a single, weeklong cruise.

The Breakaway Plus ships are so big, in fact, that they have room for giant go-kart tracks and laser tag areas on their top decks (on all of the vessels in the series except Norwegian Escape). There’s also plenty of room to spare for multiple pools, waterslides and a kiddie splash zone.

Each of the vessels also offers real Broadway shows in big, state-of-the-art theaters, sprawling spas, casinos that fill half a deck, dedicated children’s play zones, and more than 2,000 rooms.

In addition, the two newest ships in this series, Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Joy, have large gaming and virtual reality zones called the Galaxy Pavilion.

For meals, you’ll find at least 20 venues on each of these ships, including multiple main dining rooms and a buffet that come with no extra charge and such extra-charge eateries as a teppanyaki restaurant, a steakhouse, a high-end French restaurant and a Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville at Sea.

With lots of family-friendly attractions such as the go-kart tracks and laser tag courses, these ships appeal heavily to families with children, particularly teens, but they draw a lot of couples, too. They are also popular with solo travelers, thanks to their unusually large complexes of cabins for one (something you’ll find on the Breakaway and Epic classes of ships, too).

Related: The ultimate guide to Norwegian’s Latitudes Rewards loyalty program

All four of the Breakaway Plus ships have large, private, two-deck-high suite enclaves called The Haven that come with their own pool areas, restaurants and lounges. They’re some of the most spectacular suite complexes anywhere at sea .

The biggest of these ships, Norwegian Encore, measures 169,116 tons, making it the 18th-biggest cruise ship in the world as of this story’s publishing (it will drop in the rankings over the coming years as additional megaships debut). That’s bigger than all but one Carnival ship and every Princess Cruises ship. Only Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises have a significant number of bigger vessels.

Norwegian Encore can hold more than 5,000 passengers with all berths filled.

Breakaway class

Ships in class: Norwegian Getaway (2014), Norwegian Breakaway (2013).

Size: 145,655 tons.

These vessels are similar to the Breakaway Plus-class ships but slightly smaller. Or, put another way, the Breakaway Plus-class ships are a stretched version of the Breakaway-class ships.

You’ll find many of the same eateries, bars, lounges and entertainment venues on the Breakaway-class ships that you’ll find on the Breakaway Plus-class vessels. The slightly smaller size of these vessels means there’s just a tad less “stuff” on board.

The top decks of the Breakaway-class ships have two pool areas and water parks with waterslides, for instance — just like the Breakaway Plus-class ships. However, they don’t have go-kart tracks or laser tag courses. Instead of the latter attractions, you’ll find an adults-only pool area called Spice H2O at the back of the vessels. At night, it transforms into a dance club.

Related: Every Norwegian Cruise Line ship ranked from biggest to smallest

The Breakaway-class ships also boast full-size ropes courses on their top decks. Indeed, they were the first cruise ships ever to have such a feature. Other deck-top features include miniature golf courses on both vessels and basketball courts that double as volleyball courts.

On the entertainment front, both ships offer Broadway shows in their main theaters and have a circuslike show in a secondary theater called “Cirque Dreams.” The latter is a dinner show that comes with an extra charge. They’re also home to “Howl at the Moon” dueling piano shows and a version of the Latin-themed dance show “Burn the Floor.”

Like the Breakaway Plus vessels, the Breakaway ships have large complexes for solo travelers, as well as large, private The Haven suite complexes.

In general, as with the Breakaway Plus ships, these vessels are best for vacationers who like a megaresort-type experience, and they appeal heavily to families with children who love all their deck-top attractions. Each of the two ships in this series — Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway — holds about 4,000 passengers at double occupancy.

Ships in class: Norwegian Epic (2010).

Size: 155,873 tons.

Norwegian Epic is an outlier in the Norwegian fleet. Unveiled in 2010, it was originally supposed to be the first of a series of up to three similar vessels. However, after disagreements with the shipyard that built it, Norwegian eventually canceled an order for a second ship in the series and an option for a third ship in the series, leaving Norwegian Epic in a class of one.

While roughly comparable in size to the Breakaway Plus- and Breakaway-class ships (it’s a bit smaller than the former vessels and a bit bigger than the latter vessels), Norwegian Epic has a notably different design that includes some unique features.

Perhaps most notably, balcony cabins on the ship have an unusual design that includes curved walls, rounded bed corners, and a sink and vanity area that is in the main living space (for all to see), separate from a closed-off toilet area. The toilet area is behind a translucent door that some cruisers find less private than they had hoped.

Norwegian Epic is also home to the only tube-and-bowl waterslide at sea and has such rare-for-cruise-ships attractions as a rappelling wall and a three-lane bowling alley. It also features an ice bar where customers wear parkas while sipping drinks.

Still, Norwegian Epic also offers a lot that will be familiar to Norwegian fans, including many of the line’s signature restaurants, bars and entertainment.

Standout features on Norwegian Epic include a water park with some of the most over-the-top waterslides at sea (including the aforementioned tube-and-bowl slide). It also offers a version of the Burn the Floor dance show that played on Broadway and on the West End in London, as well as a Howl at the Moon piano bar and a recreation of the Cavern Club nightspot in Liverpool, England, where The Beatles got their start (complete with a The Beatles cover band).

In addition, Norwegian Epic has the line’s biggest solo cabin complex (with 128 rooms for one) and a giant The Haven private suite complex.

At 155,873 tons, Norwegian Epic currently ranks as the 34th biggest cruise vessel in the world. Notably, it was the world’s third-largest ship when it debuted in 2010. That tells you just how much the cruise industry has grown in recent years.

Norwegian Epic carries 4,100 passengers at double occupancy.

Jewel class

Ships in class: Norwegian Gem (2007), Norwegian Jade (2006), Norwegian Pearl (2006), Norwegian Jewel (2005).

Size: About 93,500 tons.

Are you unsure if you want to sail on a megaship with 4,000 or more people but still want a vessel with a good amount of features and activities? The Jewel-class ships may be the perfect solution.

At 93,500 tons, the four vessels in the series are nearly 50% smaller than the line’s Breakaway Plus-class ships but still big enough that they have a lot to offer.

Each of the vessels has more than a dozen food venues, including three main restaurants, a casual buffet, a steakhouse, a French restaurant and a teppanyaki eatery.

You’ll also find multiple pools on each of the ships, along with whirlpools, basketball courts and golf driving nets. Each of the ships also has a theater, spa, casino, and multiple bars and lounges.

What you won’t find on the ships, because of their smaller size, are all the gee-whiz attractions such as go-kart tracks, laser tag courses and large water-park areas that Norwegian has put on its bigger vessels. If you can’t live without those sorts of features on a cruise ship, then the Jewel class probably isn’t for you.

Note that Norwegian Gem does have a climbing wall and a single waterslide. Norwegian Pearl has a climbing wall but no waterslide. Norwegian Jewel and Norwegian Jade have neither of the attractions.

Related: Norwegian Cruise Line ships listed from newest to oldest

Each of the Jewel-class ships holds around 2,400 passengers at double occupancy (plus a few hundred more with every berth filled). That’s about 40% fewer passengers than you’ll find on the biggest Norwegian ships.

That makes them perfect for cruisers who want to get away from the sort of crowds that are on the biggest megaships without giving up many of the amenities that big ships have to offer.

Pride of America class

Ships in class: Pride of America (2005).

Size: 80,439 tons.

Like Norwegian Epic, Pride of America is an outlier in the Norwegian fleet. In fact, it’s perhaps an even bigger outlier than the former vessel.

Sporting a patriotic U.S. theme (you’ll find venues named after Thomas Jefferson and John Adams) and a distinct array of lounges and entertainment, it’s a ship specifically designed to sail year-round in Hawaii — the only one of its kind at any line.

Pride of America notably flies a U.S. flag and operates with a mostly U.S. crew, in keeping with regulations governing cruise itineraries that only include U.S. ports. That’s a big difference from any other big cruise vessel in the world.

Related: The best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler

It’s also the only Norwegian vessel without a casino, in keeping with local Hawaii regulations.

If you sail on Pride of America, you’ll find such one-of-a-kind eateries as the classic American car-themed Cadillac Diner. You’ll also find some of Norwegian’s signature offerings, including a Cagney’s steak house and Italian eatery La Cucina. The ship’s other onboard attractions include a showroom, lounges, bars and a top deck with extensive open-air pool and sun lounging areas.

Thanks to its ownership of Pride of America, Norwegian is the undisputed leader in Hawaii cruises. Most cruise lines that offer sailings to Hawaii only offer a limited number of such trips during a few months each year. Norwegian, by contrast, offers sailings around the Hawaiian Islands every week of the year — the only cruise line in the world to do so.

An iconic presence in Hawaii, Pride of America has been permanently dedicated to the archipelago since its debut in 2005. It offers a repeating seven-night itinerary that begins each Saturday in Honolulu and brings the chance to visit four different Hawaiian islands on a single, seven-night trip.

Beginning and ending on the island of Oahu, the itinerary includes two days each on Maui, Kauai and Hawaii. The two-day visit to Maui involves an overnight stay at the port of Kahului. The two-day visit to Kauai involves an overnight stay at the port of Nawiliwili. The two-day visit to Hawaii is split between a call at Hilo and a call at Kona.

Ships in class: Norwegian Dawn (2002), Norwegian Star (2001).

Size: 92,250 and 91,740 tons.

The Dawn-class ships are similar to the Jewel-class ships in size and amenities, with a few differences.

Like the former vessels, the Dawn-class ships have around a dozen food-serving venues, including three main restaurants, a casual buffet, a Brazilian churrascaria (barbecue) restaurant, a French restaurant and a teppanyaki eatery.

You’ll also find multiple pools on each of the ships, whirlpools, basketball courts and golf driving nets. Each of the ships also has a theater, spa, casino, and multiple bars and lounges.

Like the Jewel-class ships, the Dawn-class vessels lack the sort of big attractions such as go-kart tracks and large water parks found on bigger Norwegian vessels. In addition, there are no Broadway musicals on Dawn-class ships, and they don’t have a private The Haven suite area (though they do have several giant suites called Garden Villas that measure more than 6,000 square feet).

If you can’t live without those sorts of features on a cruise ship, then the Dawn class probably isn’t for you.

Ships in class: Norwegian Sun (2001), Norwegian Sky (1999).

Size: 78,309 and 77,104 tons.

Dating to 2001 and 1999, respectively, Norwegian Sun and Norwegian Sky are among the smallest ships at Norwegian. They offer fewer onboard attractions and amenities than is typical for the line’s vessels.

In general, they appeal to cruisers looking for a more intimate experience on a cruise ship than what you’ll find on the big Norwegian ships. They also draw cruisers who care more about the destinations that they visit on a cruise than onboard attractions.

On each of the vessels, you’ll find more than half a dozen eateries, including several main dining rooms, a casual buffet, a diner-style pub, a steakhouse, an Italian trattoria and a French bistro.

On their top decks, the ships have pools (one on Sun, two on Sky), whirlpools, a basketball court that doubles as a volleyball court, golf driving nets and a jogging track. The ships also have casinos and theaters with nightly shows.

Unlike most bigger Norwegian ships, neither of the vessels has a private The Haven suite complex or solo cabins.

Ships in class: Norwegian Spirit (1998).

Size: 75,904 tons.

Dating to 1998, Norwegian Spirit is Norwegian’s smallest and oldest ship, and — like the line’s Sun-class ships — it generally appeals to cruisers looking for a more intimate experience than you’ll find on the big Norwegian ships.

At 75,904 tons, Norwegian Spirit is less than half the size of Norwegian’s biggest ships, and it carries just 1,966 passengers — more than 2,000 fewer than the Norwegian biggies.

It also offers fewer (but still quite a few) venues and attractions. In all, you’ll find 13 food outlets on board, including two main restaurants, a casual buffet eatery, and versions of the line’s signature Cagney’s steakhouse and French eatery Le Bistro. There are more than half a dozen bars and cafes.

Deck-top attractions include several pools, whirlpools, waterslides, a basketball court and a jogging track. The ship also has a casino, spa, nightclub and theater.

Of note, Norwegian Spirit originally was built for Asia-based Star Cruises (where it was called SuperStar Leo).

If glaciers, wildlife and picturesque coastline have long been on your bucket list, consider booking a cruise to Alaska. The northernmost American state offers an activity for everyone's interest and level of adventure. You can take a thrilling helicopter flight to explore a glacier on foot or observe miles of Alaska’s lush scenery and spy whales from a comfortable seat on a boat.

Princess Cruises

majestic princess in glacier bay alaska

A top choice for multi-generational families and larger groups seeking on-board experiences for a wide age range, Princess will sail seven ships to Alaska in 2024 — more than any other line. Princess also offers the most departure cities , potentially saving you money on airfare. Alaska sailings range from 4 to 22 days, though a week is the sweet spot. The line is also only one of seven permitted to enter the magnificent Glacier Bay National Park (shown); check out the tips at the end of the story for details.

Good Housekeeping Contributing Travel Editor Karen Cicero and her daughter recently sailed on Majestic Princess, a Family Travel Awards Winner , and raved about the ship's amenities, especially the Hollywood Pool Club. She described it as “an indoor space with a heated pool, plush loungers, and cabana-like spots that are free for all guests to use.” Cicero was also impressed with the entertainment and activities suitable for all ages, the excellent dining options and a supervised kids’ club for ages 3 to 12. "We saw grandparents and grandkids on the dance floor, at the shows, on the excursions — bonding moments were everywhere," Cicero said.

In 2024, Majestic Princess and Discovery Princess, the line's newest Alaska ship, will both sail roundtrip from Seattle. "You can't beat Princess if you're looking for an experience that will please all ages," said Cicero.

Departure Cities: Los Angeles; San Francisco; Seattle; Vancouver; Whittier, Alaska Cruise Ships: Crown Princess (2024 only); Grand Princess, Caribbean Princess (2025 only), Royal Princess, Sapphire Princess, Discovery Princess, Majestic Princess (2024 only), Crown Princess, Coral Princess (2025 only)

Norwegian Cruise Line

norwegian cruise line encore in alaska

Passengers are loyal to Norwegian for its beautiful ships, top-notch service and innovative amenities. The cruise line pioneered the concept of “freestyle cruising," which includes a flexible dining time. Flexible cruising continues to be a major selling point , according to our testers who recently sailed roundtrip from Seattle to Alaska on the Norwegian Encore (pictured). "We enjoyed not having to rush back to the ship after an excursion because we had a dinner reservation," said our tester who sailed with her spouse.

They also frequented the Encore’s Observation Lounge, where they were able to cozy up and spend hours searching for marine life from floor-to-ceiling windows. Activities and entertainment, like go-karting, slides and laser tag, are abundant. For a premium experience, consider booking a stateroom in The Haven. The Encore's most luxurious accommodations feature spacious rooms — the bathrooms are nearly double the size of those in standard staterooms — a private sundeck and a concierge.

The variety of sailings to Alaska is also another reason to choose Norwegian. "If Hawaii is also on your bucket list, Norwegian is one of the only cruise lines to offer a 16-day cruise departing from Honolulu that sails through both Hawaii and Alaska so you explore two dreamy destinations on one vacation," said Cicero. She added that Norwegian sails to Alaska until late October — about a month longer than most cruise lines.

Departure Cities: Honolulu; Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver; Whittier, Alaska (2025) Cruise Ships: Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Jewel (only in 2024), Norwegian Spirit (only in May 2024), Norwegian Sun, Norwegian Jade (only in 2025), Norwegian Joy (only in 2025)

Disney Cruise Line

disney cruise ship docked in ketchikan, alaska

Disney lovers will have the time of their lives sailing roundtrip from Vancouver to Alaska aboard the Disney Wonder. "It was the best experience ever," said a mom of two young adults who sailed on the ship in May 2023. "We felt like it was a great combination of Disney and Alaska."

On-board experiences brilliantly align with the destination. For instance, Disney characters are dressed in special outfits for Alaska and are on deck during the days at sea. "We were able to get incredible photos with the glaciers behind the characters," said the mom, who also noted that you can order Mickey Mouse ice cream bars from room service. Cicero added, "Disney has the best kids' and teen clubs of any cruise line. They're enormous, filled with epic activities like superhero training and are a great place for kids and teens to make friends."

If you want an equal dose of Disney and Alaska, this is the cruise for your crew. Sailings range from five to nine nights. All routes head to Stikine Icecap so guests can observe stunning glaciers, cliffs, waterfalls and wildlife.

Departure City: Vancouver Cruise Ship: Disney Wonder

Royal Caribbean International

juneau, alaska, usa

Royal Caribbean doesn’t only sail to the Caribbean. This global cruise line whisks passengers to Alaska from popular ports such as Seattle and Vancouver. You can choose a classic seven-night itinerary or a 13-night land-and-sea getaway.

Cruise enthusiasts at the Good Housekeeping Institute are fans of Royal Caribbean for its state-of-the-art ships, exceptional service and high-quality entertainment. "Royal Caribbean had the first rock-climbing wall and ice-skating rink on a cruise ship," said Cicero. "Since then, they've brought so many other epic activities to sea." For instance, Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class, which includes Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas, offers skydiving, a surf simulator and a robot bar. "This line is an especially good fit for families with tweens, teens and young adults ," said Cicero, who sailed on Royal Caribbean with her teen daughter.

Departure Cities: Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver Cruise Ships: Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas (only in 2024), Ovation of the Seas (only in 2024), Serenade of the Seas (only in 2025)

National Geographic Lindblad Expeditions

lindblad expeditions ship national geographic sea lion

For an incredible small-ship experience, look no further than the Lindblad Expeditions–National Geographic team-up. The largest of its ships that sail to Alaska can accommodate no more than 138 passengers — just a sliver of the 4,900 or so that Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas can hold. " Being on a smaller vessel means that you’ll be able to sail right up to less frequented glaciers, waterfalls and fjords, " said Cicero.

Of course, an intimate experience comes at a higher price tag — its eight-day Alaskan adventure starts at about $6,200 per person, though you won't need to pay extra for excursions. "Voyages tend to be themed and stress the educational component," said Cicero. For instance, one focuses on coastal wildlife while another explores native cultures. A Good Housekeeping staff member who sailed the line to the Galápagos Islands (a providence of Ecuador) raved, "The ship was beautiful! I was super impressed with the staff and the service felt above and beyond.”

Departure Cities: Juneau, Alaska; Ketchikan, Alaska; Seattle; Sitka, Alaska Cruise Ships: National Geographic Quest, National Geographic Venture, National Geographic Sea Bird, National Geographic Sea Lion, National Geographic Resolution

Holland America Line

holland america line cruise to alaska

Holland America has a well-earned reputation for bringing guests to new destinations for more than 150 years. Its ships tend to be mid-sized — larger than Lindblad's offerings but smaller than the Quantum ships from Royal Caribbean. While Holland attracts an older demographic, its Alaskan cruises are often filled with multi-generational families.

One of the cruise line’s most popular itineraries is the Seven-Day Inside Passage, which takes you through Glacier Bay National Park, the Inside Passage, Tracy Arm Inlet and several must-visit port towns. But for adventure seekers curious to see as much of Alaska as possible, you’ll find tons of extended itineraries including a robust 28-day voyage that crosses the Arctic Circle.

Holland America is the only cruise line permitted to serve glacier ice, using it for cocktails like the Blue Iceberg and Juneau Gin & Tonic. The line also launched a new Alaskan-themed brunch menu offered once per cruise.

Departure Cities: Anchorage, Alaska (for land-sea tours only); Fairbanks, Alaska; Seattle; Vancouver, Whittier, Alaska Cruise Ships: Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Zuiderdam, Zaandam

Celebrity Cruises

topshot france transport sea tourism

Celebrity is popular with adults and couples looking for a premium onboard experience, including delicious cuisine, luxurious staterooms and a high-end spa . We can’t imagine a better way to rest and relax after spending a day exploring the Alaskan wilderness. Our travel experts suggest choosing one of Celebrity's many Alaska itineraries that sail through the Inside Passage and up to Dawes Glacier or Hubbard Glacier, two of the state’s gems.

Of the three Celebrity ships that sail to Alaska, we recommend the Celebrity Edge for those new to cruising or seeking a more contemporary experience. Launched in 2018, the ship features standout innovations like Eden, a multi-level bar with panoramic views, and the Magic Carpet, a multi-purpose floating space suspended directly above the sea.

Departure Cities: Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver Cruise Ships: Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Summit, Celebrity Edge

Tips for booking your cruise to Alaska

line break

✔️ Check your itinerary. The itinerary you choose is key on an Alaskan cruise. If you have your heart set on visiting Glacier Bay National Park, make sure that your cruise line has it listed on the schedule. "Only seven lines were awarded the Glacier Bay contract by the National Park Service ," Cicero said. If you're not sure whether the cruise you have in mind will go through Glacier Bay, double-check with the cruise line or your travel agent.

✔️ Book shore excursions well in advance. Alaskan cruises generally sail from April to October. Because of the shorter season, your ship will likely be close to capacity and several ships may overlap in ports. Excursions will book up quickly. To secure your spot, book excursions well in advance or as soon as they're available.

✔️ Focus on family. Alaskan cruises are best for kids who are at least 5 years old. "Keep in mind that cruise lines don't allow kids who aren't potty-trained to be in pools, even if they're wearing a swim diaper," Cicero said. It's also worth noting that most cruise lines don't permit babies under 6 months or pregnant passengers who are 24 or more weeks along. Cicero advises families with school-age children to look for on-ship amenities, such as an indoor heated pool, a supervised kids' club and a variety of family-friendly nighttime entertainment. "Before you sail, you should also find out which non-alcoholic beverages are complimentary," Cicero said. "Many cruise lines charge extra for soft drinks, but milk and juice are usually included." Free room service is another big perk for families, she notes, so see if that's offered on the line you're considering.

✔️ Check your passport. Even if your cruise starts and stops in a U.S. port like Seattle, there's a high chance your ship will dock in Canada at some point throughout your trip. Also, " some of the excursions in Alaskan ports venture into Canada and will require a passport," explained Cicero. For instance, you may take the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway from Skagway into Yukon, a Canadian territory. Your passport will need to be valid for at least 6 months following the cruise.

✔️ Pack layers. This is especially crucial if you're traveling in Alaska's shoulder season — May and September. While May tends to be drier, temperatures remain relatively chilly. Likewise, September marks the end of the summer season and welcomes cooler temperatures and more rainfall. Because you'll be spending a lot of time outdoors, it's important to prepare for all weather scenarios, including windy conditions common to sailing cruise ships.

✔️ Book next summer's cruise soon. To get the best staterooms and excursions, start looking for a 2025 cruise in 2024, Cicero said, noting that many ships start to fill up at least 6 months in advance. And don't forget about major sale days. "Last year, cruise lines had fantastic Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals," she said.

Baltimore cruises to reroute after bridge collapse pauses port traffic

Carnival, royal caribbean will move some operations to norfolk while baltimore recovers from key bridge collapse.

norwegian cruise line travel tips

Cruise lines are scrambling to make alternative plans and avoid the Port of Baltimore while officials suspend vessel traffic amid cleanup and rescue efforts around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.

Three major cruise lines sail from Baltimore, though no ships were in port Tuesday morning. The next cruise was scheduled to depart Sunday, but its operator confirmed late Tuesday afternoon that the voyage would instead head out from Norfolk.

Amira M. Hairston, a spokeswoman for the Baltimore port, said in an email that the status of the upcoming cruise ship schedule is not yet known.

“At this time we do not know how long vessel traffic will be suspended. As soon as that is determined we will provide an update. Until then please keep those involved in your prayers,” Hairston wrote.

Royal Caribbean International’s Vision of the Seas left Saturday for a 12-night southern Caribbean cruise with plans to return April 4. The cruise line said in a statement Tuesday that it was “closely monitoring the situation, and our port logistics team is currently working on alternatives for Vision of the Seas’ ongoing and upcoming sailings.”

On Thursday, the cruise company said the current sailing would end in Norfolk.

“Our guests on board will be provided compensation and complimentary shuttle transportation as well as Wi-Fi and phone calls to adjust their travel arrangements,” Royal Caribbean said.

Upcoming cruises on April 4 and 12 will sail from Norfolk as well, and passengers will be compensated for the change. The ship was already scheduled for maintenance in the Bahamas after the April 12 cruise.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and extend our heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” the company said.

Carnival Legend set off Sunday for a seven-day Bahamas cruise; the ship was scheduled to return March 31 and depart for its next sailing the same day. Instead of coming back to Baltimore, Carnival said late Tuesday, it will end its trip in Norfolk, and free buses will bring passengers back to Baltimore.

The ship’s next seven-day cruise will leave Norfolk and return to the port. In a news release , Carnival said it would temporarily move Baltimore operations to Norfolk “while Key Bridge rescue and cleanup efforts continue.”

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

Carnival Pride is supposed to start sailing from Baltimore next month, mostly to the Bahamas and eastern Caribbean.

Norwegian Cruise Line does not have cruises scheduled out of the port until later this year. American Cruise Lines, a U.S. river cruise operator, has Chesapeake Bay trips on small vessels scheduled from Baltimore starting in May. The cruise line said it will monitor developments “and make adjustments if needed.”

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said it was “deeply saddened” by the bridge collapse and was closely following the situation. “Right now, the most important thing to do is to allow the emergency workers to do their work,” the group wrote in a statement.

This year, 12 ships are scheduled to make a total of 115 calls at the Port of Baltimore, the industry association said. With room for roughly 2,000 or 2,100 passengers at double occupancy, most Baltimore-based ships are much smaller than the record-breaking behemoths that sail from Florida ports.

“Any adjustments to current cruise activity at the port will be announced as soon as available by the individual cruise lines,” CLIA said in its statement.

A news release issued last month by Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s office said that more than 444,000 individuals cruised out of the Port of Baltimore last year, the most since 2012. The Maryland Port Administration said in a news release last year that the cruise industry generates nearly 400 jobs and $63 million in revenue every year for local businesses.

The port positions itself as a convenient option for cruising year-round, thanks to its location off Interstate 95 and plentiful parking. More than 40 million people live within a six-hour drive of the city, the port administration says.

Baltimore bridge collapse

How it happened: Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship . The container ship lost power shortly before hitting the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.

Victims: Divers have recovered the bodies of two construction workers , officials said. They were fathers, husbands and hard workers . A mayday call from the ship prompted first responders to shut down traffic on the four-lane bridge, saving lives.

Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge severed ocean links to the Port of Baltimore, which provides about 20,000 jobs to the area . See how the collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and other goods .

Rebuilding: The bridge, built in the 1970s , will probably take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars to rebuild , experts said.
