If you're looking for an unforgettable ski holiday combined with absolute luxury & indulgence, look no further than Queenstown's premier accommodations below:

Matakauri Lodge

Queenstown Nestled among remote bush on the edge of Lake Wakatipu, Matakauri Lodge offers absolute comfort only a ten-minute drive from Queenstown. Great views are available wherever you look at Matakauri, whether it's from the bathtub, the day bed, the dining room, the lodge lounge, the gym or hot tub! From any vantage, you have the mesmerising panorama of the big three which are, the Remarkables, Cecil and Walter Peak. The main lodge consists of a spacious lounge, dining and living areas, all with views of Lake Wakatipu. A luxury spa facility, infinity swimming pool, sauna with fitness centre as well as a library are on-site to help you unwind. The Owner’s Cottage at Matakauri features four suites in a freestanding residence with private Jacuzzi, kitchen and grand courtyard making it ideal for families, couples or friends travelling together, as well as special celebrations.

Blanket Bay

Glenorchy Set on the shores of Lake Wakatipu amidst the rugged snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps. Blanket Bay is where relaxation and adventure meets luxury accommodation, unparalleled service and five star facilities.  Days are for exploring the Southern Alps; a helicopter flight over jaw-dropping Milford Sound; a thrilling jet-boat ride on the beautiful Dart River; fly-fishing or hiking, not to mention the Hot Tub with magnificent lake and mountain views.\ Nights are spent eating dinner on the outdoor terrace under a star-filled sky (there are blankets if it gets chilly) or in the intimate Wine Cave, while enjoying world-class cuisine, focusing on locally sourced seasonal produce. Sir Ian McKellen described it as “paradise on Earth”. Who are we to argue with Gandalf?

Altitude Brewing

If you are after glacier fed lake views whilst sipping on a cold one - Altitude Brewing is the bar for you! The brewery tap room overlooks Lake Wakatipu and surrounding mountains. This is a favorite of mine, and with easy walking access from Queenstown via the Frankton loop track, why not jump on a bike and peddle to this brewery! Founded in 2013 this was the first brewery next to the now up and coming Frankton marina. Take your pooch (dog treats $2) and have a seat in the grounded ski lift next to their open fire. With an ever changing beer, cider & wine list, each visit is different.

Canyon Brewing

Canyon Brewery is another incredible brewery, situated on the hills of the Shotover River. This micro-brewery and restaurant crafts everything on site inhouse. As soon as you step into the micro-brewery you'll be met with the towering brewing equipment and a huge desire to grab a paddle! Grapefruit and cucumber sour anyone...?

"We’ve worked hard to create an open, on display brewery so you can watch our award-winning beer being brewed live. With four regular brews and two rotating seasonally, our hand-crafted beers strike the perfect balance between easy drinking and interesting flavours". Canyon Brewery 2021

Searchlight Brewery

What a hidden gem, located within Queenstown's industrial centre you'll seek and find this transparent taproom. Searchlight brewery has both Indoor and outdoor sitting, and doggo friendly. Why not try a game of Jenga next to the indoor fire whilst attempting to choose one of many craft beers chalked up! The outdoor beer garden regularly transforms into a stage for live music gigs, mini festivals, comedy and trivia, so be sure to keep an eye on our socials for the latest. This independently owned and operated brewery started as a passion project by founder Lewis Gaskin in 2015. Originally a tortilla factory, Lewis and his partner Anna moved into the empty warehouse as they hand-built every inch of the brewery and taproom into what it is today.

Ok, what's your flavor? Wheat beer, Pilsner, Hazy, IPA, Cider or perhaps a coffee butterscotch and chocolate Porter makes you larger than life - well my frothy friends...Cargo has it all.

Cargo’s innovative and distinctive design is credited to MakeBardo, a creative design industry based in Queenstown. Moving far away from the stereotypical beer labels, this simple design which breaks down the gender stereotypes linked to beer and focuses instead on the essentials of the product.

After years of looking, Cargo finally found its home! The stunning Waitiri Creek became available and in November 2017 Cargo moved in and transformed the venue into a unique tasting room with plans for the best beer garden in New Zealand.

Smiths Craft Beer House

I absolutely love this beer house, Smiths hosts a great variety of craft beers, is slap bang central Queenstown (hidden upstairs), has a great local atmosphere and provides delicious food! The Smiths team are always happy to guide you through the best of the local craft brews... incredible service!

I find this beer house particularly educational, even the menu shares the history of craft beer and defines some popular terminology. My advice would be to order a flight, choose your weapons from the large chalk board, close your eyes and guess which is which... before wrapping your mouth around a BBQ pulled pork burger - unbeerlievable.

So there you have it, the top 5 craft beer spots in Queenstown.

Are you planning a family skiing trip to New Zealand? Getting the whole family up, dressed, ready, and up the hill may seem daunting, but with these helpful tips, you can make the experience as easy as possible. Read on to learn how to optimise your skiing adventure with your family in beautiful New Zealand!

Pick up Your Passes in Advance

To save valuable time and get everyone on the snow faster, consider picking up your mountain passes the day before you head to the ski field. Make sure to securely attach the passes to your jackets before you leave to avoid losing them and delaying your skiing plans.

Prepare the Night Before

Make the morning smooth sailing by laying out each child's clothing the night before. This way, it will be ready to put on in the morning, and all other extra layers and spares should already be packed. Being well-prepared in advance will help you start your day on the slopes smoothly.

Rise & Shine Early

Set the alarm clocks and resist the temptation to sleep in! Arriving early at the ski field is essential to avoid being behind schedule and missing out on precious skiing time. Car parks tend to fill up quickly, and lugging all your gear up the hill with kids can be challenging. Arriving early allows you to secure a parking spot and have some relaxed time before hitting the slopes.

Fuel Up with a Hearty Breakfast

Skiing requires a lot of energy, so make sure to start the day with a nutritious breakfast for the whole family, including yourself. A hearty breakfast will provide the energy needed for a day of skiing and ensure everyone stays fueled up and ready for an exciting day on the snow.

Collect Your Hire Equipment Early

If you plan to rent equipment for the day, make it a priority to pick it up as soon as you arrive at the mountain. Avoid waiting in long queues and wasting precious time by being one of the first to collect your hire equipment. Plus, being early may also give you a better selection to choose from.

Reassure Your Kids

If your kids are heading to ski school tell them when you will be back to pick them up and stick to that time, don’t be late, and more importantly (especially if your child gets nervous about being by themselves) don't come back BEFORE that time. Let them meet new friends and get to know their instructor, a visit from mum and dad on the mountain might seem like a good idea, but more often than not it will just upset your child when you leave again. No fun for the kids or the instructor, help make it easier and just leave them to their day and enjoy your own time on the snow. Maybe have a little spy from a distance!

Lastly, Have fun!

Remember, you're on a skiing trip with your family, so relax and have fun! Enjoy the beautiful slopes of New Zealand, learn new skills, and cherish precious moments with your loved ones. Skiing is a thrilling adventure that creates lasting memories for the whole family.

If you don’t have proper ski jacket and pants that fit your child and don't want the expense we recommend hiring these for your holiday as the correct gear is crucial.

Helmets are also a must for little ones. As well as protecting their noggin, they also keep heads nice and toasty warm. It's worth noting that if you plan to put your child into ski lessons, they will not be allowed to go out without a helmet.

Things you will need to buy or borrow off friends included the following:

  • Under layers made of either merino (wool) or thermal polypropylene for top and bottom, bring a spare set in case they get wet or your child needs a second layer
  • Woollen ski socks, not too thick – merino is best
  • A woollen beanie (hat)
  • Waterproof insulated mittens or gloves designed for skiing. Tie string to the mittens and feed them through your kids jacket so they don't get lost
  • Goggles or sunglasses with high UV protection that fit your child's face
  • Sunblock to slip, slop and slap as the snow is very reflective and can easily burn, even on a cloudy day
  • For the younger ones a second set of underpants is also a good idea
  • Lastly make sure you pack a camera for capturing their first day on the slopes and to ignite their passion for next time

Generally 5-6 years old is a good time to start your kids in group ski lessons. If you are wanting them to try snowboarding instead it is worth either starting with skiing, or holding off until they are 7-8, as snowboarding requires a bit more coordination and concentration when you first start out.

If you are unsure about whether your child is ready to give skiing a go, some useful things to consider are:

  • Do they show coordination?
  • Are they toilet/potty trained?
  • Are they happy to spend the day away from mum and dad?
  • Do they follow instructions well?
  • Will they happily spend the day bundled up in thick, warm clothes?

If you answer no to any of these, it could be a good indication that your child might not quite be ready to start skiing just yet.

This does not mean you need to give up entirely until every answer is yes though! If you are keen to get your child on the snow straight away, some great options to start out with are:

  • A fun day on the mountain, play in the snow to get them used to the clothes and the cold
  • Consider trying them out with a private lesson, this will allow you to stay with them if needed and allows for 1-on-1 attention
  • Take a look at the different lesson programs on offer for under 5s. They often include lots of fun play and a very gentle introduction to skiing

For kids that do check all the boxes, New Zealand ski fields offer a great range of different kids lessons with loads of different options to suit. For the younger kids that aren't quite ready to hit the slopes just yet, there are also some great on-mountain childcare options as well!

The ski season runs from early June through to mid-October (ski field opening dates vary depending on snowfall), with the best time of year for skiing generally falling in late July through to the end of August.

Some great spring skiing can be had in September, as well as the occasional spring powder dump!

If you're planning to head over for a ski holiday, you will most likely be heading to one of two main ski-regions: Queenstown Lakes, or Canterbury. Canterbury is home to Mt Hutt Ski Field as well as many club fields with incredible terrain. Queenstown Lakes is home to the Remarkables, Coronet Peak, Cardrona & Treble Cone.

The average maximum and minimum temperatures in winter for the main ski regions are as follows. Remember to take these with a grain of salt, because if there is one thing that is certain in New Zealand, it's that the weather is not!

Average monthly max/min temperatures (degrees Celsius)

When dressing for a New Zealand winter, layers are your best option. It can quite often be very cold in the morning before warming up considerably once the sun comes out. Be sure to bring a good, thick coat (down or wool jackets are the best) to keep the cold out on those frosty mornings. Always wear thermals under your clothing too!

Motels and Apartments

Motels and apartments in New Zealand offer great value and in many cases, rooms can be better equipped than 3-star hotels. However, you won't have the convenience of an on-site restaurant or bar but you can use the kitchen in the room to cook up a storm!

3-Star Hotels

The star rating for hotels generally applies to the facilities and services a hotel may have at your disposal and not necessarily the quality or value of those services. This is where our local first-hand knowledge makes your selection easier.

4-Star Hotels

Our 4-star hotel range is immense and each one is selected and recommended for its location and room types. Many of the hotels in this category have a range of room styles such as standard/deluxe/superior, lake view, mountain view, suites etc. Many also have 2 or 3 bedroom suites which are ideal for families. 4-star hotels generally have swimming pools, gyms, restaurants and in most cases are a little closer to town centres or occupy premium positions compared to 3-star properties.

Boutique and Luxury Lodges and Hotels

When it comes to boutique and luxury New Zealand takes the biscuit! Our guests often tell us that they are some of the best they have ever experienced. Go on - you know you want to!

     1. Lose the ice

Make sure your front and back windscreens, as well as your passenger and driver windows and mirrors, are completely free of ice before heading out in the morning. Use an ice scraper - steer clear of hot water as this can crack your windscreen.

HOT TIP #1: start your car 15 minutes before you leave and let your de-misters do their thing

HOT TIP #2: if you’re struggling to get rid of the ice, try leaving a towel or some cardboard on your windscreen overnight to stop it icing over.

      2. Take it slow

Winter can often mean ice on the road, especially at higher elevations. Slow down and drive with caution, leaving a safe driving distance between you and the car in front.

HOT TIP #3: if you find yourself slipping on some road ice, stay calm! Ease your foot off the accelerator and allow the car to slow itself down, try to keep the steering wheel straight and allow the car to pass over the ice.

     3. Be prepared

The weather in New Zealand can change quickly, especially in winter. Always be prepared when driving and make sure you carry snow chains in your car in case they need to be fitted.

HOT TIP #4: if you’re driving up the mountains for a day’s skiing there will often be a patrol at the bottom of the access road checking that you have chains in your car. If you don’t you may be turned around, save yourself the hassle and always carry chains.

     4. Be patient

This applies to driving in general but is especially applicable when driving up ski field access roads. There will most likely be a lot of tourists on the road who are unfamiliar with the conditions – drive slowly and only overtake if it is 100% safe to do so.

HOT TIP #5: if you spot a large line of cars behind you, pull over at a safe location (only if there is a safe spot) to allow them to pass. You will feel more comfortable driving without a line of impatient drivers behind you and other road users will be grateful.

     5. Shuttles are your friend

If you are feeling especially nervous about driving up the mountain in winter, take driving out of the equation and catch a bus or shuttle instead. The shuttle drivers have years of experience driving in winter conditions, so you can just relax and enjoy the view!

1. Blast off a bridge

Queenstown is the birthplace of commercial bungy jumping, so this is the place to throw yourself into a canyon! With a range of different locations and freak-out levels to suit anyone, AJ Hackett is the original and the best when it comes to bungy. Take the plunge at the Kawarau Bridge Bungy , where the world's first commercial jumps took place in 1988. Have a go at a night jump over the twinkling lights of Queenstown at The Ledge, or tackle the longest bungy in New Zealand at AJ Hackett's Nevis Bungy.

2. Plunge from a plane

If bungy jumping is too close to the ground for you, what better way to see New Zealand's stunning scenery then by plummeting towards it at terminal velocity, with nothing to stop you from colliding with those beautiful mountains but a thin parachute? If this sounds appealing, then skydiving is for you! Head over to NZONE Skydiving and take the plunge from 9, 12 or 15,000 feet, and experience one of the greatest rushes of your life!

3. Rush down a river

Queenstown is the number one place to experience the exhilaration of a jet boat ride (jet boats were invented by a Kiwi after all!) With a range of operators to choose from, feel the rush with KJet, Skippers Canyon Jet , Shotover Jet , Dart River Wilderness Je t or Thunder Jet . Enjoy a hair-raising boat ride as you rush along the lakes and rivers, speed past canyon walls so close that you can touch them, and marvel as you fly over water just 3 inches deep!

4. Sail through the skies

If flying towards the ground or rushing through canyons at high speeds doesn't sound like your cup of tea, opt for something a little gentler (but no less thrilling) and take to the skies with a tandem paragliding experience! Skytrek , G Force Paragliding and Coronet Peak Tandem Paragliding are the three operators to choose from for your aerial adventure. Head up a mountain and float over Queenstown under a billowing canopy for a peaceful, and truly memorable adventure high above the city.

5. Climb through a canyon

If getting down and dirty is more your style, you can't go past a canyoning adventure with Canyoning Queenstown ! Get up close and personal with the environment and head into the wilderness. Spend a few hours climbing up canyon beds, jumping down waterfalls and sliding over slippery river rocks, for a day of adventure that you won't forget. A great activity for adventure lovers looking for something a little bit different.

To add any of these adrenalin raising adventures to your Queenstown Itinerary, contact us.

The mountains are quieter

With the school holiday’s over and done with and the busiest ski months (July and August) out of the way, September brings with it quieter ski fields and shorter lift lines. You’ll even have days in spring when you can find fresh groomers well into the afternoon!

The sun is here to stay

Spring brings with it some awesome skiing weather. With the sun coming out to play most days, you can say goodbye to your heavy winter gear and go skiing in a light jacket, hoodie, or even a t-shirt! Some people will even brave the slopes in board shorts!

Ski holiday in spring, New Zealand

You can ski the slush!

Die-hard powder hounds might turn their noses up at spring skiing, but for anyone looking for a good time on the slopes, skiing slush is some of the best winter fun that can be had. Some skiers and snowboarders even argue that it’s more fun than powder! Get out there on some lovely spring snow and judge for yourself.

Also remember, the end of winter doesn’t mean the powder days are over – spring can bring with it some of the best powder days of the season, so enjoy the slush, and on those elusive spring powder days, you’ll be hitting the deep stuff all day long!

Learning is easier

We’ve already pointed out the fun that can be had with slushy spring snow - another plus is how easy it is to learn on. If you’re thinking about trying skiing for the first time or you’re wanting to develop your skills, slush is the perfect type of snow for learning. It’s soft, slow, forgiving, and a whole lot of fun!

Everything is cheaper

The end of winter means sales – and lots of them. Grab yourself a discount on everything from lift tickets and accommodation to ski gear, food, and even flights! There are always some great deals floating around to take advantage of, so not only is spring a great time to enjoy the snow, but it will also mean a significantly cheaper ski holiday!

Always stay in control

If you’ve never skied before, take a few lessons and get confident. If it’s been a while, ease yourself back onto the snow with a few easy runs. Know how to stop and avoid other people and obstacles, and ensure that you are skiing terrain where you are always capable of maintaining control.

Give way to people downhill

Downhill skiers and snowboarders have right of way - be sure that you leave enough space to avoid people below you. If you are entering a ski run, don't forget to look up to be sure you won’t be cutting anyone off.

Ski field signage, mountain safety code, New Zealand

Obey all ski field signage

Signs are there for a reason. If a run is closed, don’t go down it. If you reach the ski area boundary, stop. The snow patrol team spend their days ensuring that any runs with hazards or too little snow are closed to the public to avoid any unnecessary dangers, help the patrol team and stay safe - respect the signs.

Check before you charge

If you are in the park or jumping off natural features, ski with a spotter and be sure that your landing area is clear of any people or hazards before you hit a jump. If someone falls on a jump or feature, raise your arms or ski poles in a cross to alert others until the person has cleared the area.

Stop in a visible area

If you need to stop on the ski field, move to the side of the run and make sure you are clearly visible from above. Be sure that you don’t stand underneath a jump and don’t stop right in the centre of a ski run – respect other users and make yourself easily visible and avoidable.

Don’t lose your gear

Respect the other visitors and the environment when you are out on the mountain. Keep track of all your equipment and be sure to carry and store your gear securely. Don’t leave anything lying around and dispose of any rubbish properly, either in a designated bin or by taking it off the hill with you.

Ski racks keeping gear organised, ski responsibility code

Don’t leave an accident

If you witness an accident or are involved in one, stay on the scene until snow patrol arrives. Be respectful and don’t leave until the snow patrol team has asked any questions they need to be answered in relation to the incident.

Follow these ski field safety essentials so that you can enjoy every minute of your snowy adventures to the maximum, without unnecessary risk!

Now we have that out of the way, let’s work up from the bottom, starting with our poor, often neglected, feet.

Thin, warm, long socks made from wool are the best option for skiing and snowboarding. Ski/snowboard boots are designed to keep your feet warm and well insulated, so big thick socks aren’t necessary. Be sure your socks fit well and aren’t going to fall and wrinkle in your boot as this can lead to blisters.

  • Hot Tip #1: If your feet are getting cold it’s often because your boots are a fraction too tight. Try giving your feet a tiny bit more wiggle room and it should help with foot chill, this is a really important tip - especially for first timers!

2. Base Layers

Your winter base layer is super important, a good, moisture wicking base layer makes a world of difference in the snow. Again, wool or a synthetic fibre is the best option – you’ll want a thin pants layer and at least one long-sleeved top layer.

  • Hot Tip #2: If you feel really feel the cold, consider doubling up on your top base layer (you can always take the extra layer off if you get too warm).

3. Mid Layer

Your mid layer is your second layer of defence against the cold. A fleece layer is the best option for your mid layer – very warm, light, breathable and comfortable. Consider a jacket with a zip so you can undo it if you start to get too warm.

4. Outer Layers

You will want a waterproof outer layer for both your jacket and pants. Most ski fields have an option to hire these which is a great way to keep the cost down! Look for jackets with lots of pockets to hold your gear and a hood for those cold snowy days.

Be sure your outer pants are insulated and waterproof, there’s a good chance you’ll be spending a fair bit of time on your bum so the extra insulation will help to keep out the cold.

  • Hot Tip #3: DO NOT wear jeans. They will get wet, they will get heavy, they will get cold. So unless you fancy resembling a sodden overgrown sloth, leave your jeans at home.

Get a good ski jacket, ski New Zealand

Gloves are a must - frostbite is a real threat if you don’t wear gloves. Go for a thin glove liner underneath a thick Gore-tex or leather glove, Gore-tex is the cheaper option but still highly effective.

Snow is bright, and snow blindness is not a joke, get some goggles. No need to spend a fortune, goggles start at around NZ$40 for adults and they are well worth it. If it’s a warm, sunny day, a good pair of sunglasses will do the trick as well.

Notice how your head cover has been referred to as a ‘helmet’, not a ‘hat’. That’s because skiing and snowboarding are sports and they come with risks.

99% of the time you won’t hurt yourself when you fall because you don’t have far to go and the snow is generally nice and soft. Protect your head against that 1% and wear a helmet. These can be hired from any ski field for as low as $10 a day – well worth it to protect your noggin from any potential harm! For all inclusive New Zealand ski packages (rentals, lift pass & car hire) or customised options, contact our local ski experts.

8. Extra Bits

  • Sunscreen: snow is basically one giant reflector so layer up on the sunscreen to avoid getting burnt.
  • Neckwarmer: on cold days a neckwarmer will do wonders in keeping you toasty. Wind chill can make your face very cold very fast – a neckwarmer pulled over your face is a lifesaver.
  • Beanie: If you get cold easily or the weather is a bit rough, add a thin beanie under your helmet to keep your head nice and warm
  • Carry a backpack so you can add or take away layers when you’re too hot or cold.
  • Bring a water bottle and snacks in your backpack – that way you won’t need to stop for as many breaks!
  • Carry a spare lens if you have goggles with interchangeable lenses. Different lenses make seeing easier in varying weather conditions.

Last but not least

HAVE FUN! Yes there are a few things to think about leading up to your first ski adventure, but if you are prepared and excited, you will have the time of your life.

A word of warning - skiing is addictive and you will get hooked, so be ready to spend a lot more time on the snow!

Backpack on ski trip

Take on board these 5 essential tips to get the most out of your ski and snowboard lessons:

     1. Learn from a Professional

Take it from me, don’t get your first ski lesson from a family member or friend. Even if you think your relationship is 100% indestructible, trust me, it’s not – you’ve never been skiing together before. Skiing is a lot of fun but the enjoyment can be sucked out incredibly quickly when your partner or friend gets bored and frustrated trying to teach you when all they want to do is go fast. Do yourself a favour and get a lesson from a professional snow sports instructor, they are trained to get you skiing confidently in the quickest way possible while ensuring the learning process is both safe and fun!

     2. Ignore the Colours

Everybody wants to be hitting up the double black diamond runs like a pro, but try not to get caught up in the different run colours when you’re learning. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, if you’re taking a lesson you will most likely be on green or blue runs, working on perfecting technique and learning new skills, neither of which can be done on the steep (unless you’re tackling moguls!). Effective learning requires a more gentle and easily controllable environment, so trust your instructor when they steer you away from the steep stuff and put your effort into perfecting any flaws in your technique. This way when you do hit those double blacks, you know you will be 100% in control.

     3. Understand Yourself

Everybody on the slopes is looking for a slightly different experience, know what you’re after and choose the right lesson accordingly. If you are a sociable person and looking for something a little more laid-back while you’re getting to grips with skiing, go for a group lesson. The learning process in a group is generally a little more relaxed and social. Your instructors are adept at dealing with groups of students and getting everyone skiing together for a fun and effective introduction to the sport.

If you are feeling especially anxious, or are perhaps wanting to work on some specific skills and techniques for your own improvement, you may want to consider booking in for a private lesson. This is a much more intimate learning environment and gives the opportunity to really focus on improving and paying special attention to any flaws or skills you would like to work on.

HOT TIP: If you’re in a group lesson, be sure to speak up! If there is something you don’t understand, if you’d like to know why you’re learning a specific skill – let your instructor know, they can’t help you if you don’t tell them when you have a problem.

     4. Be Honest

The most difficult part of a ski school’s day is line-up, when everyone is being sorted into the right group for their lesson. In order to be placed with the right group of skiers and the best instructor for your needs, you may be asked a few questions about your snow experience. Be honest and don’t try to either up-skill yourself or downplay your experience – you may be asked questions relating to how many days skiing you have had, what sort of terrain you have skied previously, any specific skills you are aiming to work on etc. It is important that you answer honestly so that you are placed with a group and instructor that will be the best fit for your ability and ambitions.

     5. Never Stop Learning

That feeling when you first make it all the way down a run without a fall is one of the greatest highs you’ll experience on the snow, but try not to let all that new-found confidence go to your head! One of the great things about skiing and snowboarding is that there is always more to learn, always harder terrain to conquer, and always the opportunity to go just that little bit faster. Embrace everything about the sport and aim to continue developing your skills. The more you learn, the more enjoyable the snow is – take an extra lesson, book into a development clinic, continue pushing yourself that little bit further every time you’re on the mountain and you will have found a sport that will keep you blissfully happy for decades to come!

Get Fit Before You Go

Remember, skiing is a sport. You don’t need to be an Olympian to enjoy it but, like with any physical activity, you are likely to enjoy your days more if you have a base level of fitness. No need to head out and run a marathon though! Work yourself up to your holiday by going for some nice long walks or bike rides, and work some leg exercises into your daily routine to strengthen those skiing muscles. A bit of extra work will make a big difference for those first few days on the snow and your body will thank you for it.

Buy Your Lift Pass Early

Save time and purchase your lift passes before you head off on your holiday, time saved in queues is more time spent on the snow! Be sure to do your research as well, for your first time skiing you won’t need a lift pass for the whole ski field for the first few days – save a few dollars with a learners lift ticket and work your way up to the rest of the mountain.

Make Sure You Dress Right

If you can borrow ski clothes for your first trip, do it! Check out our what to wear blog for more ideas! Ski clothing is expensive so you’re much better off hiring or borrowing clothes for the first trip. A warm base layer is also super important, a woollen long sleeve top and pants are your best protection against the snow, be sure you layer up well, taking layers off when you're too warm is easy, trying to find more layers when you're cold and standing on top of a mountain...not so easy!

Riding the chairlift, Cardrona, New Zealand

Extra Accessories You Will Need

On top of your outer wear you will also need some form of eye protection. Ski goggles are best, especially in the colder weather, but a good pair of sunglasses will work as well. Sun screen is a must, it may be cold but the snow acts like a giant reflective surface and means you will burn much faster than usual. This goes for your lips to, get a heavy duty lip balm with some sunscreen to stop any lip burn. A good pair of gloves is essential, there’s nothing worse than cold hands, a thin glove liner underneath thick ski gloves will do the job nicely. Finally, make sure you buy, borrow or hire a helmet – skiing is a lot of fun, but there is always the chance of a collision or fall. If you don’t want your holiday ruined by a bump on the head, be smart, stay safe and get a helmet!

Get the Right Equipment

It’s your first time on the snow and ski equipment is extremely pricey – do yourself a financial favour and rent all your gear. When getting fitted for your ski boots be sure that they fit well without any pain or discomfort. If you feel the boots you’ve been given don’t quite fit right, take the time to ensure you have a pair that feel good, your feet will thank you.

Ski Lessons are a Must for Beginners.

You can always tell on the hill who has taken the time to have a lesson and who hasn’t. For all inclusive New Zealand ski lesson packages (rentals and lift pass) or customised options, contact Ski New Zealand . Those who took a lesson are skiing down the mountain with confidence, laughing and smiling with their family, those who didn’t are on the ground, skis off, close to tears. If you don’t want to spend your whole holiday in a lesson, that’s fine too – look at the possibility of taking a few half day lessons, just be sure that before you go out on your own, you have learned to control your speed, stop, and turn confidently. Lessons are not just about learning to ski or snowboard, they are also about safety. Your instructor will teach you about the Alpine Responsibility Code and how to enjoy the mountain in a safe manner. Lessons will ensure you are on your way to fully enjoy your skiing experience sooner.

HOT TIP #1: It’s tempting for a family with young children to leave the kids in ski school every day. For some children, this is a great option, but know your kids and know their limits. Only give them as much skiing as they can handle or they will wind up hating it. Let the kids choose how much skiing they want to do, this way it will stay fun.

Mt Hutt ski field, Methven, New Zealand

Get a Ride up the Hill

If you’ve never driven in winter conditions it can be scary. Take that nervousness out of the equation by booking a bus or shuttle to get you up and down the hill, the drive to and from the ski field will be much more relaxing and allow you to fully enjoy your days on the snow.

What to Expect for Your First Few Days

It may be tough, it may be cold, but you will have a blast! After two or three days you can expect to be skiing down the beginners slopes with confidence. After a few days if you are feeling good, you may be ready to tackle your first blue run. Be patient, take the time to learn and don’t push yourself too far too fast. Skiing is like anything else, you need to walk before you can run.

HOT TIP #2: If you’re skiing with friends or family who are experienced, try to resist the temptation to ski with them as soon as you make it down your first run. You may have been hit with the awesome stick and take to skiing like a fish to water, but it is more likely that it will take some time to get confident. Going too big too soon will most likely knock your confidence and make it difficult to continue to enjoy the sport. Only do as much as you are comfortable with, you’ve got plenty of time to get better so take it slow.

Don’t Forget

Have fun! Skiing is an incredible sport with so many options for learning and exploring. Ease into it slowly and give yourself plenty of time for learning and you’ll be heli-skiing and venturing into the backcountry before you know it!  If you are looking for some inspiration, browse our popular New Zealand Ski Holidays.

Skiing at Treble Cone, Wanaka

Get Fit, Get Strong

Skiing is a lot of fun, and when you’re mucking about in the snow you can sometimes forget that you’re participating in a high intensity sport. Muscles that rarely get used will be pushed, and at the same time your body will be dealing with the higher altitudes and colder weather. Ensuring you are fit and strong will greatly enhance your enjoyment of the sport, allow you to continue developing your skills and help to prevent injury. The key areas to focus your attention on are core strength, leg strength and agility. Balance is also crucial for skiing and snowboarding and including some training on tools like balance boards will greatly assist in the development of your core strength and improve balance.

Get the Right Gear

Ski technology has developed rapidly over the last few decades, and there is a wealth of different equipment options to choose from. Before you buy or upgrade your gear, have a think about what sort of skiing you will be doing: on-piste, backcountry, terrain park - a combination of them all? There is equipment for every style of skiing and the sales reps in ski shops are very knowledgeable, they will be able to help to ensure that you get the right gear to suit your skill level and the terrain you want to ride. (Bare in mind that most insurance will only cover injury occurring on-piste)

Get a Lesson

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced skier, there is always improvement to be made and further instruction can help enormously. Lessons are not just for learning to stop; higher-level progression clinics will allow you to focus on really developing your technique and give you the chance to pick out and work on any problem areas that you are struggling with. Another extremely useful learning tool is the increasing availability of instructors’ courses. Instructor training is geared towards solidifying, developing and learning how to teach basic technique and you will be amazed at how much your skiing improves when you focus is on breaking down the basics.

Learning from the pros at Coronet Peak

Get Someone to Video You

Watching yourself on video can be an amazing tool when it comes to improving. A video of yourself will allow you to pick out any flaws in technique, giving you a much better understanding of your performance and showing where you need to make changes in order to achieve more dynamic, fluid and effective body movements.

Get Out There With People Who Will Push You

Be sure you continue to challenge yourself. Find more advanced skiers and head out for a shred with them. Riding with people who are more advanced is a great way to push your boundaries and force yourself to improve on difficult terrain. Keep your eyes open, watch and learn from how they tackle a run and try to keep up through foreign territory. Tackle your problem areas, if you struggle through deep powder, follow a friend and try to stick to the same line. Having difficulty carving? Head out on some fresh groomers with someone who can carve it up with the best of them, and do your best to stick to their tracks. Be sure not to push yourself too far too fast though – if you have been confidently skiing blue runs on-piste, don’t expect to be able to keep up with a double-black skier off-piste. Challenge yourself but be sure to know the limits of what you can tackle safely.

Get Focussed & Set Goals

Set goals and stick to them. If you’re determined to nail a specific trick in the park, or there’s a particularly tricky run you want to be able to ski by the end of winter, then have weekly goals to help you achieve that. Don’t over-step too far too fast, set manageable goals that you are confident you can achieve, this way you will be able to keep challenging yourself and keep stepping up. You will be skiing stronger, harder and more efficiently week to week with a constant sense of satisfaction and achievement. Don’t stop driving to be better - the beauty of snow sports is that there is no end to your development, there’s always a bigger cliff to drop and a steeper line to ski, you just need to keep pushing.

Follow in Pete’s Dragon’s New Zealand footsteps to spectacular filming locations in New Zealand's South Island!

With the release of the Disney film ‘Pete’s Dragon,’ a New Zealand holiday has never looked so good. Showcasing some of the most beautiful and iconic scenery in the country, Pete’s Dragon filming locations include many recognisable places originally celebrated for their appearance in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film trilogies. If you are visiting Queenstown for a Ski Holiday, why not throw in a bit of movie magic. The snow capped mountains of Queenstown, provide the ultimate backdrop for this endearing family tale. So immerse yourself in the making of the film, and be sure to visit these key locations while you're here.

Queenstown and Paradise, Lower South Island

Known as New Zealand’s adventure capital, alpine resort - Queenstown - is a lively tourist destination renowned for its picture perfect snow capped mountains. The scene where Pete watches as Elliot the Dragon appears from beneath a cliff top to fly over him was filmed just below the Remarkables Mountains. Further shooting occurred at Deer Park Heights, a private farm 20 minutes from central Queenstown. Most of the aerial sequences were also filmed here with local helicopter company Glacier Southern Lakes. Visitors can take their own aerial adventure with the same company offering daily scenic rides and private charters. Other things to do while you're in Queenstown. A 30 minute drive from Queenstown, on the ‘most beautiful stretch of road’ in the world is Glenorchy - gateway to the small hamlet of Paradise. Well worth a visit, there are many opportunities to jetboat, horse ride or visit some of the Lord of the Rings film locations.  Spend time on the Gibbston Valley wine trail or catch a ride on the 100 year old steamship the ‘TSS Earnslaw.’ For an adrenaline rush head out on the Shotover Jet, dive off the Nevis bungy or canyon swing, or Zip Line the Gondola.

Tapanui, Lower South Island

Just two and a half hour drive from Queenstown is the rural area of Tapanui. This picturesque location was transformed into Millhaven, a small logging town in America’s Pacific Northwest. Filming also took place at nearby Conical Hill, the site of a disused sawmill.  While much of the set has been taken down, the main street is instantly recognisable as being from the movie. Tapanui is surrounded by gently rolling farmland and is known for its world class fishing. Most of its rivers are brimming with brown trout and salmon, including the Pomahaka River - thought to have some of the biggest brown trout in the world. Other things to do in Tapanui. Tapanui is near the Otago Rail Trail - one of New Zealand’s great rides. A 73 km cycling trail tracking New Zealand’s gold mining history. The ride takes you through spectacular scenery and over 20 of New Zealand’s rural mining towns.  The Otago Coastline is another must do while you're here . Visit Nugget Point-  home to various native wildlife, including New Zealand fur seals, sea lions and yellow eyed penguins. And if you're really lucky, you might even spot a dolphin or two.

There’s no shortage of things to do in Wanaka off the slopes and — best of all — most of them are free!

We thought we would share some of our favourites:

  • Hike the Rob Roy Glacier. The Rob Roy glacier is a hanging glacier located in the Mt Aspiring National Park, a One hour drive from Wanaka through the Matukituki valley. A moderate three hour round trip you’ll see snowfields, native bush, sheer rock faces, waterfalls and the rushing Matukituki river. Most of the walk is within the forest, with the last 100m opening out onto an alpine meadow just underneath the glacier.
  • Wishbone Falls. At 77 metres high these falls are truly spectacular. Located at the entrance to the Mt Aspiring National Park, an hours drive from Wanaka, they cascade down glacier-hewn rock to a calm pool beneath. A popular swimming spot, and the perfect place to take a picnic.
  • Walk the Millennium track . This gentle track traverses the lake edge from Waterfall creek to Glendhu Bay. Offering some of the best views in Wanaka this undulating hike is a relaxing way to take in  the best of Wanaka scenery. You also have the option of not walking the full way to Glendhu — still a beautiful and fulfilling walk.
  • Bike the outlet track. Known as the ‘Outlet Track’ due to the fact that it begins where the river joins with Lake Wanaka. Although popular with bit walkers and bike, we believe the best way to experience this one is from two wheels. You’ll see pine trees, native bush, sheer cliffs and beautiful poplars that turn bright orange in the Autumn.
  • Have a picnic by the lake.  When you see Wanaka, you’ll see why this one’s a no-brainer. The lake is framed by mountains and pine forest, and the air is crisp and clean. We think there's no better way to experience the beauty of this town than grabbing a gourmet food hamper and settling in on the lake edge after a day up the mountain.
  • Visit the Wanaka Tree. The iconic lone willow tree standing in Lake Wanaka is a popular spot for photography and a must-visit location. You can walk or bike along the lakefront to reach the Wanaka Tree and take in the stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

We’re a little biased (because Wanaka is our home) but we heartily recommend including a little time in Wanaka to your New Zealand Ski Holiday, even if you base yourself in Queenstown. An hour's drive from New Zealand’s adventure capital, Wanaka is the quieter cousin. But what it lacks in bright lights and adventure experiences it makes up for in truly spectacular scenery.

Whether you're passing through or here for a few days, there no shortage of things to do in Wanaka. Contact one of our experienced ski specialists today to start planning your ultimate winter getaway with Ski New Zealand.

  • When are the winter and spring holidays for New Zealand and Australian Schools?
  • When is the best time to visit the South Island for a ski or snowboarding holiday?
  • Can the ski packages on your website be customised?
  • What options are there for children at the ski fields?

The major ski fields offer kids ski clubs, which are a great option for children. These include lessons, lunch and heaps of fun activities to keep them engaged while learning to ski or snowboard.

For the younger ones, who aren’t ready for the slopes, there are also licensed early childcare centres at Cardrona, The Remarkables, Coronet Peak and Mt Hutt. Opening hours can fluctuate throughout the season with demand so getting in touch with us early to make sure this is available can be crucial to planning your holiday.

There are 5 major ski fields in the South Island which accommodate skiers and snowboarders and there are also a number of small family owned and club ski fields.

The 5 main ski fields are:

  • Cardrona Ski Resort and Treble Cone, located near Wanaka;
  • The Remarkables and Coronet Peak, located near Queenstown;
  • And Mt Hutt which is located near Methven (1 hour from Christchurch).

Many of the club fields are located near Arthurs pass while Roundhill, located near Lake Tekapo, and Ohau (near Twizel) are popular small ski fields.

If you are staying longer than a few days and would like some variety, we suggest you base yourself in Queenstown or Wanaka where you can enjoy 4 ski fields plus the fantastic winter holiday activities the region has to offer.

For more information on the ski fields visit our Skiing in NZ page .

This varies for each mountain, but is generally between mid June to late September or early October. Below are the scheduled opening and closing dates for the 2024 ski season:

Found a suggested New Zealand holiday package you like? To make a reservation, you can simply click the "Get Quote/ Book Now" tab on the tour menu.

Follow the instructions and complete the details requested. The booking process requires a deposit through our secure credit card system (Visa and MasterCard only).

You can call us anytime if you are having trouble booking or need to make some small adjustments. We're always here to help and would be more than happy to assist you.

All the ski fields have regular shuttle transfers that run between the town and the mountain. There is also the option to get picked up from your accommodation and dropped off at your accommodation at the end of the day. Of course, this varies between accommodation, ski field and can be a minefield of information.  If you get in touch with our team we can take away all the frustration of planning and get you to the ski field in the most efficient way.

If you are not looking for a self-drive package we will include such arrangements in your booking, this means a one-off payment, one set of T&Cs, 24/7 support. There really is no reason to deal with anyone else.

Yes, many shops in Wanaka, Queenstown, and Methven rent the latest ski and snowboard equipment. These shops offer a relaxed atmosphere for trying on gear to ensure you get the correct fit.

You can also hire equipment directly from the ski fields, which can make your first day on the mountain a little busy. Whatever you decide, we can organise everything for you in advance; all you need to do is turn up and confirm the sizing.

We recommend you wear a jacket and pants specific for snowboarding or skiing. These can be hired from rental stores in town or from the ski fields, which we can arrange.

Temperatures can vary with mountain weather conditions and you will be exercising in your gear. So it is a good idea to layer your clothing to allow yourself some flexibility. Wear warm layers that you can remove or add on depending on the weather, preferably thermal polypropylene or merino, under your ski jacket and pants, this will help you regulate your temperature - warm but not sweaty!

Helmets are now standard snow sports wear. If you are new to snowboarding or skiing, we highly recommend you hire a helmet which will offer protection from accidents and keep your head toasty warm. Alternatively, make sure you bring a warm beanie (hat).

Socks and gloves are two of the most important items of clothing when skiing or boarding -- crucial to your enjoyment of your day on the mountain. But they can’t be hired. Bring ski or snowboard specific long socks and waterproof gloves or mittens or purchase some when you arrive. Normal socks and gloves will not be adequate protection in cold snowy conditions.

Lastly, eye protection, in the form of sunglasses or goggles, and sunscreen for your face are very important. The sun reflecting off the snow is much stronger than normal and can damage your eyes if you are not wearing appropriate eye wear.

This isn't possible with your own gear but may be possible if you hire from the ski area you are skiing. If you are skiing there the following day then you may have the option to leave your hired equipment in a storage locker overnight.

We recommend taking your boots home and ensuring they are dry and warm for your next day of mountain adventure.

If this is something that interests you then please get in touch with the team and they can make the relevant calls, saving you time to enjoy.

Yes. All the ski fields have cafes and snack bars where you can buy lunch, coffee, snacks and drinks.

We recommend you carry some treats in your pocket for on the ski lift, especially if you are skiing with young children.  A water bottle or thermos of hot chocolate or tea is a great idea for the journey home too.

Some mountains have great facilities for dinner too. So if your travel times allow it you could have a meal as you come off your skis then all you need to do is shower and enjoy your evening when you get home.

TOP TIP: If it's a sunny day secure a deck chair early for the post-ski beverage, it'll be your most relaxing drink yet!

Cardrona Ski Resort is the only Southern Lakes ski field with on-mountain accommodation.

Get in early if you would like to stay at Cardrona overnight. During school holidays when the ski season is at its busiest on-mountain accommodation sells out well in advance of the ski season.

You can bring supplies for in-house dining but Cardrona has marvellous on-mountain restaurant facilities and when the skies are clear some of New Zealand's best star gazing.

All ski field access roads are alpine roads so you must carry snow chains and know how to fit them.

Cardrona Ski Resort, Treble Cone Ski field and Roundhill ski field have gravel access roads. Coronet Peak and The Remarkables ski fields are sealed roads. All can be safely driven in your rental car as long as you have the appropriate insurance cover and follow instructions for when to fit chains, etc.

Read or listen to snow reports for current road conditions.

Seasons vary from year to year so it’s impossible to predict the best weather and snow conditions. As a general rule, you are more likely to get good conditions in the middle of the season rather than at either end.

On the odd occasion, ski fields may delay their opening day.

New Zealand and Australian school holidays are the busiest times of the year at the ski fields. If possible, we suggest avoiding these dates. And if you need to travel during the school holidays, the best plan is to book early to ensure you get your first choice of accommodation at the best price available. Of course, no one can predict the weather, but this is where travel insurance can be invaluable, covering you for days missed on the mountain. If you are based in the Queenstown/Wanaka region for your stay we can also help you purchase a super pass. These passes allow you to not only choose from multiple mountains in the area but also enable you to transfer funds to other activities if the weather does not permit skiing that day or you don't fancy it - great flexibility!

The dates below will vary by a few days from school to school however, these are:

They can come with snow chains and ski or snowboard racks which means you have less sorting out to do and can easily get yourselves on the ski slopes. We can advise you on the different insurance and coverage levels you might need. Often the ski access roads are not sealed, or due to the time of year, lots of grit is used on the roads. This can lead to a few chips in the windscreens over a season, so it is best to be covered in case you are one of the unlucky ones.

If you utilise a disability permit at home then you can obtain a temporary permit to use as you travel around New Zealand. To do this just let your consultant know and they will help you complete the application. Be sure you allow plenty of time to get this sorted before arriving in NZ.

Applying for a vehicle disability permit in New Zealand is simple. All you need to do is complete a short form and along with a copy of your current permit send the information to the CCS Disability action office here in New Zealand. There is a small fee.

Even better - when you book your tour with us we can get the forms and help you arrange this. Allow at least 4 weeks though to make sure its in place before you arrive into New Zealand.

The New Zealand government has introduced an Electronic Tourist Authority (ETA) and International Visitor Conservation & Tourist Levy (IVL). This is designed to strengthen border security and help smaller communities build the infrastructure to cope with the large influx of international visitors each year. For all visitors from visa-waiver countries , the ETA is required in order to enter New Zealand. If you are not from a visa-waiver country, you will likely need a visa, and you should consult New Zealand Immigration .

It is best to carry a hard copy of your confirmation when you travel through the border.

How do I obtain the ETA?

The application for the ETA can be made online or via the NZeTA mobile app. The process should take about 10 minutes and must be undertaken prior to travel. It is advised you apply as soon as possible; be aware the process can take up to 72 hours. Make sure you have yours before you set off on your holiday. Payment for the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy can be made at the same time.

How much does it cost?

If the application is made from the NZeTA mobile app, it will cost $17; online applications will be $23.  The IVL cost is $35 and contributes directly to the tourism infrastructure and helps to protect the natural landscapes that so many come to enjoy. It is valid for up to 2 years and can be used for multiple entries into New Zealand.

Are there any exceptions?

All passengers travelling on a New Zealand passport, Australian passport or hold a valid resident visa will be exempt from purchasing the ETA visa and paying the IVL.

Take a look at the government  website if you would like to learn more.

No. We do not charge an additional fee for paying with your credit card.

Yes. Your bank may charge you some additional fees for paying in foreign currencies, for example paying NZ dollars with your US credit card. We recommend contacting your card provider to confirm whether your bank or credit card company charges additional fees.

Many banks or credit card companies offer multiple types/conditions of credit cards and normally there is an option for a credit or debit card which does not have any foreign exchange charges - this option may give you the best currency exchange when paying for your trip in NZ dollar and whilst you are in New Zealand. Paying in New Zealand dollars Our tours are priced in New Zealand dollars. If you choose to pay with NZ currency your credit card supplier may charge you a foreign exchange/currency conversion fee, much like if you went to a bank and purchased foreign currency. Paying with other currencies We do give you the option to pay in an alternative currency. When paying with a credit card issued in the US and using US dollars, there shouldn't be any foreign exchange or currency conversion fee applied by your credit card company.

Currency conversion rates Every bank or credit card company has a different foreign exchange/currency rate, which changes daily and usually is higher than online exchange information based on the share market. The only foreign exchange/currency conversion rates you should use are those of banks, credit card companies or ours, which our New Zealand-based bank supplies.

To be clear, any additional fees incurred at the payment stage are due to bank fees or currency conversions, not us.

We accept Visa and MasterCard payments and process them via our secure credit card processing system.

This system is administered entirely by our bank (Bank of New Zealand) and Windcave (A secure online payment system).

When completing the booking form, the final stage is the payment process. From there, follow the instructions.

When your payment is made, the screen will display a reference number, and a receipt will be emailed to you.

We will automatically be notified of your payment, and one of our travel consultants will contact you to confirm your booking within 48 hours of payment. Once in contact with an agent, you can adjust your itinerary.

When booking, we will ask for a deposit payment of 20% of the quoted tour cost or NZ$250 per person - whichever is higher.

Occasionally, items such as domestic airfares may also need to be paid for at the time of the deposit. These are usually paid for immediately after you book, which means we will collect airfare payments along with your deposit. Your agent will advise you of items like this and explain the related T&Cs upon booking.

The deposit amount will be calculated automatically and displayed on the payment page.

The balance due date is displayed on the costs page of your itinerary.

  • If you've made a reservation well ahead of time , the remaining balance is to be paid 60 days before the start of your itinerary.
  • If you've booked recently and your tour start date is less than 60 days away, you'll need to pay the remaining costs as soon as you receive the confirmation document for your tour.
  • The final payment for a group booking is required 60 days before the start date of your tour.

We recommend confirming this information with your consultant.

We may have made some special arrangements that require payment in advance. We will advise you of this at the time of booking. Our itineraries have no hidden costs and pricing pages update instantly as you or our specialists make any alterations.

Yes. The payment system we use offers the highest levels of safety and security available.

The system we use is administered entirely by Windcave -- a world leader in secure online payment technology -- and our bank, the Bank of New Zealand. When you click through to the payment system the transaction is completed within a secure page and the information entered is only seen by Windcave and our bank.

Yes. You can choose to pay for your tour in another currency.

Choose your preferred currency on the payments page and our system will convert your balance into your currency using BNZ (Bank of New Zealand) exchange rates.

Paying in Your Local Currency

For example, selecting to pay us in $US will mean you will be charged that exact $US amount if your card was issued by a US bank.

Paying in NZ Dollars

If you choose to pay in $NZ using a non-New Zealand credit card, your credit card company or bank may charge you a currency conversion fee. This can sometimes be around 3% of the transactions. So check with your bank or credit card company first to determine your best option.

Note: the cost in currencies other than $NZ may fluctuate with exchange rate changes. We use the NZ$ price as the base cost.

If you don't have a credit card or prefer not to use one, please contact us so that we can supply all the information you need to make a direct credit to our New Zealand or Australian bank account.

If you decide to make payments via direct credit, please note that the payments need to be made in New Zealand dollars, and any bank fees incurred need to be covered by you. Depending on your location and bank, this transaction may take up to 10 days to process, so please keep this in mind while making the payment. Transfer the money as early as possible to avoid any delays. We won't be able to confirm your plans or make any arrangements until we receive the full deposit amount.

We recommend having a Credit card with you while travelling through New Zealand.

Even if you have prepaid for your arrangements, they may request your credit card details as a precautionary measure for incidentals. These may include charges for mini-bar, room service, and restaurant bills at hotels, as well as when collecting your rental vehicle. We recommend obtaining a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card before starting your trip to New Zealand.

Yes. It is a simple process to make partial or split payments.

Once the deposit is paid, there's no need to make a balance payment until 60 days prior to the start of your itinerary. Your balance payment date will be outlined in your tour confirmation.

How to make partial, split or additional payments?

You can make partial payments through your online tour itinerary, select 'make/view payments' in the right hand side menu. At the bottom of this page is a white box showing the balance due, which can be edited. Edit to the amount you wish to pay, and then click through to process your payment through our secure credit card system.

If you have not made your deposit payment yet but want to split the deposit between travel companions or different credit cards, please get in contact with us. We need to make a small manual adjustment before you can enter the deposit amount in the white box. Once your full deposit payment has been received, we will be in touch to confirm this with you and can begin to book your holiday.

Changing the date of your booked tour is possible. However, bear in mind that changing the date may mean some of your previous arrangements are not possible, or costs may vary from those first quoted. If you do need to change your travel dates, the earlier you can let us know, the better. After carefully selecting the various accommodations and inclusions in your itinerary, the last thing we would want is for them to be unavailable when your dates change.

Your personal travel specialist will of course give you the best advice at the time to help you with your decision.

No, the cost of the tour does not include any kind of insurance unless we have quoted this separately to you. The best travel insurance is dependent on each individual trip and traveller's needs. We encourage you to speak with your consultant about insurance options; alternatively, if you have a preferred insurance provider, consider contacting them to discuss your travel insurance needs. We strongly recommend that you purchase travel insurance as soon as your trip is booked and to make sure that you are covered for cancellation fees, interruption costs and any other kind of unforeseen circumstance.

You can drive in New Zealand if you have a current and valid overseas license or driver permit written in English, or accompanied by an accurate translation.

UK residents - with the UK phasing out the 2 Part Paper license and moving to a plastic card license please note the following:

  • If you only need the plastic card to drive in the UK, then that's all you need in NZ too i.e. you don’t need to bring your paper license.
  • If your license stipulates that you need both, then you will indeed need to bring both.
  • If you only have paper license (i.e. no card), then the rental car companies in NZ will accept your paper license

The usual minimum age to rent or drive a rental vehicle in New Zealand is 25. In some cases, we have a special arrangement with rental car companies that may allow drivers from 21 years old. They must hold a current full license (not a provisional or learner's license). You may also need an English translation for an overseas license so please confirm before you travel. If you have any questions about your ability to drive in New Zealand then check-in with our team of travel specialists. We will help where we can or point you in the right direction of reliable information.

New Zealand rental car fleets mainly offer automatic gearbox vehicles. Manual cars are available with some fleets, but these tend to be only smaller cars. If you require a specific car type, contact the team for advice.

Driving during winter in New Zealand is for the most part no different from any other time. Indeed, winter can be a great time to travel with less traffic and clear days. Extra care does need to be taken in some places where at times roads can be affected by snow and ice.

If there is potential for ice on a road avoid nighttime or early morning driving if possible. Icy road conditions are generally signposted, with regularly ice-affected corners permanently signposted and temporary conditions marked.

Some southern regions' roads can be affected by snow. But roads and highway conditions will be clearly signposted and, when necessary, roads will be closed. Main highways usually re-open within a few hours of heavy snowfall after road crews clear them.

In winter, you will need to carry snow chains to travel on snow-affected roads.

These include some popular and recommended routes like the Crown Range road, between Queenstown and Wanaka, and the road to Milford Sound. Snow chains are available to hire when you collect your rental car.

Winter driving can be very enjoyable. Quiet roads and clear days make for some of the best scenery. Simply adjust your driving to suit the conditions.

Most of the rental cars we arrange for you include full roadside assistance (breakdown cover). So if the car develops a problem help is just a phone call away. If your problem cannot be resolved at the roadside then contact us or the rental car company and a solution for a replacement vehicle will be organised as soon as practically possible.

Check with your agent today to see if you are covered.

We use only the most reliable car rental companies and have worked with them for many years. We know their fleets are well maintained and regularly serviced so you are safe behind the wheel.

We strongly recommend that all of our clients seek local and professional advice on their specific insurance needs at the time of making their reservations to protect their investment. Travel insurance is there to cover you for any unforeseen or unexpected events. This could be anything from a flight delay that causes you to miss the start of your tour, a weather event that prevents you from getting to your next destination, or having an accident or becoming ill and requiring medical attention. Most insurance providers can include medical coverage, cancellation or interruption cover, and many now offer coverage for COVID-19-related disruptions. Insurance should not be an afterthought, it should be considered and discussed from the initial planning stages of your itinerary to ensure you have the coverage you need.

Ask your consultant today about travel insurance to protect your investment.

All roads leading to the ski fields are alpine roads, which means that you must have snow chains and the ability to fit them. The roads to Cardrona Ski Resort, Treble Cone Skifield, and Mt Hutt ski field are made of gravel, while the ones to Coronet Peak and The Remarkables ski fields are sealed. However, all of them can be driven safely in your rental car if you have the proper snow insurance cover. Our team can assist you in booking these items as part of your ski package.

Whether you are on a well-deserved holiday with friends or with family, it takes only a second for your trip to take an unexpected turn for the worse. Travel insurance can help with unforeseen incidents and expenses if things go wrong whilst you are away.

Planning your New Zealand ski vacation

What are some things i should consider when booking a new zealand ski trip package.

Yes, you want pristine powder and perfect runs, but take a moment to consider how close you want to be to the slopes, what extras you want from your resort, and—of course—how much après ski you intend to indulge in.

How can I find cheap New Zealand ski packages?

Right now, ski trips start at just $298. Prices and availability are subject to change. Additional terms may apply.

Can I book a beginner ski package in New Zealand?

Yes! Head for the green runs—wide, sweeping slopes—for a gentle introduction to snow life in New Zealand. Book lessons so you can gear up to take on the rest of the mountain with confidence. Après awaits for all after an eventful day in the snow.

How much does a ski trip to New Zealand cost?

Sensational ski trips to New Zealand start from $298. Use the budget filter to find powder at your perfect price. As always, prices and availability are subject to change. Additional terms may apply.

When’s the best time of year to plan a ski trip to New Zealand?

The best time to hit the slopes in New Zealand depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re all about powder-packed pistes and brilliant blue-sky skiing conditions, aim for the middle of the season. Alternatively, if you’re willing to take a chance on start or end of season snow, you’ll bag much cheaper prices —just make sure there’s a spa or après bar to shelter in on white-out days.

Can I book New Zealand ski packages with airfare?

Save money on your snow time by booking your accommodation, airfare, and car rental in a brilliant bundle. It’s both convenient and cash-flow friendly.

Can I book a New Zealand ski trip with free cancellation and/or flexible dates?

Flexibility is always a bonus when you’re flying down the slopes—and it makes for an easier booking process, too. Check the payment option filter to find trips with free cancellation as well as buy now, pay later options.

Why should I book a ski package in New Zealand with Expedia?

Simple search and fantastic filters make it easy to find, build, and book your dream New Zealand ski vacation in just a few clicks. It’s ‘snow’ joke, it really is that easy.

10 Best Ski Resorts in New Zealand

ski trip to nz

As a country with many mountains and a cold winter climate with plenty of snow at higher altitudes, New Zealand offers skiers and snowboarders a lot of fun. Although prices aren’t cheap, many travelers will find that skiing here is more affordable than, say, in the Swiss Alps. Plus, there are fantastic views from many of the ski slopes and neighboring resorts, and most of the skiing takes place above the tree line. Whether you’re an advanced skier or a beginner, if you’re traveling to New Zealand during the ski season (generally from June to October), hitting the slopes is a fun addition to any trip.

Most of New Zealand’s ski resorts are located in the South Island, as the conditions are better there for skiing and snowboarding. But, the largest commercial ski field in the country is actually in the central North Island, on the slopes of an active volcano, Mt. Ruapehu. Note that at many ski areas, there is no on-mountain accommodation, so you'll need to drive yourself there on what are often quite challenging roads.

Here are ten of the best ski resorts in New Zealand that travelers should know about.

Treble Cone

 Cameron Spencer/Getty Images

The South Island's largest ski resort, Treble Cone near Wanaka, is often voted New Zealand's "best" overall place to ski and snowboard. It receives the most snowfall of any ski resort in the country and pretty reliable weather, with fewer closures than more northern resorts. It's especially suitable for seasoned skiers and snowboarders, as almost half of the terrain here is rated as advanced or expert. The views can't be beat, either—Treble Cone has views across to Mt. Aspiring and Lake Wanaka.

Whakapapa , on the northern slopes of Mount Tongariro in the Tongariro National Park, is the only North Island ski field to make this list. While serious New Zealand skiers tend to prefer the South Island, there are good logistical reasons for why you might want to stick to the North Island. If so, Whakapapa should be your go-to. Plus, it's the biggest ski field in New Zealand, in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and on the highest mountain in the North Island (9,176 feet), so there's a lot here to enjoy. The Happy Valley area is ideal for beginners, making Whakapapa a favorite with families. There are dozens of jumps, trails, and runs for intermediate and advanced skiers, too.

The Remarkables

Dianne Manson/Getty Images

The Remarkables are the mountains you can see from Queenstown, and the ski field is just a half-hour drive from the city. It's a good place for skiers and snowboarders of all levels of experience, and there are excellent facilities at the day lodge, so with its proximity to Queenstown, this is an ideal option for a bit of casual skiing on a more sightseeing-heavy vacation.

Craigieburn Valley

Craigieburn Valley isn't a ski resort in the typical sense of the word, as there are few of the facilities that you can expert at many other ski areas in the country. But Craigieburn is a firm favorite with advanced skiers seeking extreme adventures. About 90 minutes northwest of Christchurch, the slopes at Craigieburn are some of the most challenging patrolled terrains in the country, and shouldn't be taken lightly. But if you have adequate experience under your belt, the steep and relatively untouched nature of the trails at Craigieburn could be a highlight of your New Zealand ski trip.

Conveniently located near Wanaka (30 minutes away) and Queenstown (60 minutes away), Cardrona is excellent for families and beginners, while still having enough to interest more experienced skiers. Extra convenient features are the fact that there are some limited accommodation on the mountain itself, plus shuttle bus services to get there from the nearest towns.

 Simon Fergusson/Getty Images

A frequent contender for (and winner of) best ski field in New Zealand titles is Mt. Hutt , around 90 minutes from Christchurch near the town of Methven. If you enjoy speed, this is the place to go: the slopes have a substantial vertical drop and a steep pitch, meaning you can get up to some considerable speeds. It's a suitable place for all levels of experience. However, it's often closed due to weather conditions (it can be very windy), so be prepared to settle in for a day or two in Methven.

Hanmer Springs

 Greg Wood/Getty Images

Hanmer Springs is perhaps better known as a hot spring resort town, but the ski field here is also a real treat. It's privately owned, uncrowded, quite affordable, and a little bit retro (in a good way). It's ideal for intermediate skiers and snowboarders, in a wide alpine bowl area. And after a day on the slopes, a warming soak in a hot spring bath in town might be just what the doctor ordered.

 EyesWideOpen/Getty Images

This ski resort at Lake Tekapo might just be the most scenic in New Zealand, with views of the beautiful lake as well as Mt. Cook, the highest mountain in the country. While this used to be quite a small ski area atop a round hill (appropriately enough), an extremely long rope tow was constructed in 2010, ready to take experienced skiers to the longest vertical drop in New Zealand—more than 2,500 feet.

Mt. Olympus

The main area at Mt. Olympus is quite small, and a lot of it is only accessible via a hike. Therefore, it's better suited to skiers than snowboarders. Although parts of the area are suitable for beginners or intermediate skiers, they are quite challenging and not ideal for kids. If you have an adventurous spirit, Mt. Olympus is great for expert skiers. It's about a two-hour drive from Christchurch in the Craigieburn Range.

Coronet Peak

 James D. Morgan/Getty Images

Another ski resort accessible from both Queenstown and Wanaka, Coronet Peak is one of the most popular resorts in the South Island (which essentially makes it one of the most popular in New Zealand). Beginners are catered to, but intermediates can shine here, with lots of groomed trails of varying pitch. Snow guns provide much of the snow here as the natural snowfall levels are not very high.

Heli-Skiing with Mountaintop Wine Tasting - coming soon

All of our ski adventures are custom-made so let us know if you've got any other ideas up your sleeve, or want some more inspiration....

JAMES B - WANAKA Heli-skiing and lunch on top of a mountain with nobody for miles around are memories that will stay with me forever! That and running around Lake Wanaka at sundown with clear skies – might be the best running trail I’ve ever been on - thanks Mabey Ski.
BECCA C - QUEENSTOWN The most personalised trip I’ve ever been on. I would never have thought of a day’s wine tasting on a ski holiday but it turns out it’s the perfect way to rest your legs in the middle of a week of skiing!
CHARLOTTE G - QUEENSTOWN & WANAKA Mabey Ski has an exceptional eye for detail and no request was considered too difficult. There were so many personal touches, and I loved too that we were fitted for skis and boots in our own apartment – it really took away the stress of it all!
POLLY W - SOUTH ISLAND We booked our honeymoon to New Zealand through Nickie at Mabey Ski. After just one chat she really got us, and suggested perfect options to match our preferred holiday style. I haven’t experienced this level of personalisation before. Nickie really understood our needs – fine wine, fine food and plenty of relaxing in idyllic settings amongst all the skiing!
CHARLES B - QUEENSTOWN & WANAKA A super easy, well-informed planning phase, with ideas suggested – never forced. We’re two active guys who were keen to explore the outback of New Zealand. We fitted in plenty of skiing and après ski, and on our days off we managed to hike and run trails in some of the most beautiful scenery. All made possible by recommendations and planning ahead.
HILARY D - SOUTH ISLAND It was our first time in New Zealand and any expectations (which were already high) were exceeded. We received lots of insightful information around activities we had in mind as well as new ideas and suggestions. The perfect balance of inspiration alongside practical, efficient support. Hands down one of the best trips we’ve ever been on!

What’s not included?

Contiki social travel trips have a large degree of flexibility built into them to enable you to truly own your experience. This means that some trip elements are not included in the initial cost and may require additional budgeting.

Flights to and from your starting and ending points are not included in the cost of your trip. These can be added on during the booking process either online or via our contact center or booked independently by you.

Each trip contains the right amount of free time for you to explore or indulge your travel desires. We offer Free Time Add-Ons, which are additional experiences that are not included in the overall price. These add ons are highlighted on the specific trip page. Your Trip Manager will highlight these to you and organise their booking on trip. Exceptions may apply where pre booking is required but this will be made known to you in your pre departure information.

A number of meal times are left open for you to explore a region and its foodie offerings in greater detail, so budgeting for your taste in non-catered meals is important.

Planning New Zealand Ski Packages from Australia

cardrona ski field wanaka skiing in new zealand nz ski

As you plan your New Zealand ski holiday, you will need to arrange three components:

  • Everything within New Zealand (this is what our ski packages take care of)
  • Travel documentation

We recommend booking flights directly from Australia to the airport nearest your chosen ski field. For Mt Hutt, this will be Christchurch Airport. And for the Queenstown and Wanaka ski fields, this will be Queenstown Airport.

The reason we do not include flights with our ski packages is because most of our clients are able to secure better deals through booking directly with the airline. We recommend looking at flights with Air New Zealand and Jetstar .

Everything within New Zealand

All of our ski packages include lift passes, accommodation, and transportation (rental car or mountain coach). Some also include lesson and rental packages or off-slope activities.

These packages serve as a starting point when you begin planning your ski holiday. However, we recommend adding in anything else you need to make your ski holiday a success. We can bundle everything together for great discounts and unbeatable convenience.

This includes:

  • Clothing rentals
  • Childcare and Kids’ Club
  • Night skiing (Coronet Peak)
  • Child car seats
  • Infant cots at accommodation
  • Daily breakfast at accommodation
  • Additional sightseeing or adventure activities
  • Extra ski days
  • Accommodation upgrades

Travel documents

You need a passport to travel to New Zealand from Australia, but not a visa.

If you are traveling with an Australian passport, your passport needs to be valid until the date you leave New Zealand (other nationalities must hold a passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the date you intend to leave New Zealand).

How to Save on New Zealand Ski Packages from Australia

queenstown new zealand

Skiing can be expensive. Thankfully, there are many ways to save big on your New Zealand ski holiday. These are a few of our top tips to save on New Zealand ski travel:

Book far in advance

Travel in june, plan your travel dates around flight pricing.

  • Ski at Mt Hutt

Bring your own gear if you own it

Especially if you’re traveling as a family, the best and cheapest accommodation is fully booked out by January. If you book your ski holiday early, you can score great discounts or accommodation upgrades on your ski package.

When the ski season begins in early or mid-June (not the case in 2020), traveling in June is far cheaper than any other time during the winter season. June is still quiet, with fewer crowds, and we can often find excellent savings if you travel in this shoulder season.

The biggest variable in a New Zealand ski trip from Australia is the flights. While you can score round-trip flights for $300 or less at certain times of year, these skyrocket to well over $600 over peak periods. If you’re traveling as a family, that can mean spending an extra $1200 or more on your ski holiday.

The best way to save on flights is to book early, choose your dates based on the cheapest flights you can find, and plan everything else around that.

While traveling with excess luggage can be pricey, renting ski gear for three or more days is pricier still. If you’re planning to spend a week or longer in New Zealand, it pays to bring your own gear from home. Plus, that way you’ll know everything fits right.

With its stunning landscapes and diverse terrains, New Zealand is a dream destination for any snow lover. Here are some tips to make the most of your skiing experience:

First, choose the right ski resort for your skill level and interests. Some popular options include Treble Cone and The Remarkables , both offering breathtaking views and a variety of trails to explore.

Hit the Slopes

When you hit the slopes, remember to dress appropriately for the weather and bring sunscreen, as the UV rays can be strong in New Zealand. Don’t forget to take breaks and hydrate often to prevent altitude sickness.

Après-Ski Activities

  • Relax in a hot pool or spa to soothe your muscles after a long day of skiing.
  • Take a scenic helicopter tour to see the beautiful landscapes from above.
  • Visit local wineries and enjoy some of New Zealand’s famous wines.

Experience the thrill of skiing in New Zealand and make unforgettable memories on and off the slopes. Start planning your dream vacation today.

Find Out When Ski Season Starts and Ends

If you’re planning a skiing trip to New Zealand, you’ll want to know when the ski season begins and ends. Generally, ski season in New Zealand runs from June to October, with July and August being the peak months. However, the exact dates can vary depending on the weather conditions and the individual ski resorts.

If you’re looking for the best snow conditions, it’s best to go during the peak season. But if you’re looking for smaller crowds and lower prices, consider going earlier or later in the season. Keep in mind that weather can be unpredictable in New Zealand, so it’s important to check the conditions before you go.

Ski Season Dates for Major Ski Resorts

  • Cardrona Alpine Resort: Typically opens in late June and closes in early October.
  • The Remarkables: Typically opens in early June and closes in late September or early October.
  • Treble Cone: Typically opens in late June and closes in late September or early October.

Weather Considerations for Skiing in New Zealand

The weather in New Zealand can be unpredictable, so it’s important to keep an eye on the forecast and be prepared for changing conditions. It’s not uncommon for a sunny day to turn into a snowy one, or vice versa, so it’s important to bring layers and be ready for anything.

If you’re traveling to New Zealand specifically for skiing, it’s a good idea to plan for a longer trip in case the weather doesn’t cooperate. This will give you more flexibility to wait for good snow conditions and avoid disappointment if the weather turns bad.

Tips for Planning Your Ski Trip to New Zealand

  • Book Early: New Zealand is a popular ski destination, so it’s important to book your accommodations and lift tickets early to avoid disappointment.
  • Consider a Package: Many ski resorts in New Zealand offer package deals that include accommodations, lift tickets, and other amenities.
  • Be Prepared: New Zealand’s weather can be unpredictable, so it’s important to bring appropriate clothing and gear, and to be ready for changing conditions.

Now that you know when ski season starts and ends in New Zealand, it’s time to start planning your trip. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced skier, New Zealand’s ski resorts offer something for everyone, from stunning alpine scenery to challenging runs.
