The best private food tours in Bologna

Italy is a must-see destination for foodies, and Bologna is arguably its culinary capital. Food is part of the fabric of society, and the proudly Italian reverence for cuisine is more evident here than anywhere else. Rich flavors, fresh pasta, and delectable delicacies like cured meats and cheeses form part of a culinary tradition that has influenced the entire country. From tiny trattorias to vast buffet spreads (and a few Michelin-starred meals, of course), Bologna’s best restaurants take many different forms. But on our food tours in Bologna, no matter where you eat, it will be strikingly evident why Bologna is Italy’s unrivaled foodie haven.

Meet some of our food-loving local hosts in Bologna

Like the people who travel with us, they have different backgrounds and interests – but they’re all so passionate about the place they call home, they choose to spend their free time sharing it with the like-minded travelers matched to them.

Bologna Food Tour

In Italy’s charismatic culinary capitals, deciding what – and where – to eat is bound to be one of your biggest battles. If it’s authentic experiences you’re looking for on your Bologna food tours, not the watered-down eateries catering only to tourists, a City Unscripted food tour is the only way to go. Food tours of Bologna with our private guides won’t be hindered by indecipherable maps and chalkboard menus written in rough Italian. Your host will play the dual role of your personal restaurant reviewer and menu decipherer, pointing out all the city’s most popular places to eat.

Bologna Food Tour

The only way to understand what makes Bologna one of the best food destinations in the world is to book food tours of Bologna with us. Our Bologna trattoria experience gives you the opportunity to try a traditional dinner, but there’s a lot more to the local food scene. Pick from our range of food walking tours in Bologna to experience the varied culinary culture. Our “Tortellini, tortelloni & trattorias” tour is the perfect excuse to fill up on local delicacies, while our “Authentic aperitivo in Bologna” experience lets you indulge in the Italian tradition done the right way.

Bologna Food Tour

There’s no better time than Bologna food tours to taste the cuisine that put the city on the culinary map. You could start small, with a plate of Bolognese nibbles and a glass of wine at a local aperitivo spot, before moving on to something more substantial, like silky Tagliatelle al Ragù or freshly-baked focaccia at an osteria. Maybe you’ll try a selection of snacks at the iconic Mercato delle Erbe market in the historic city center, or perhaps you’ll taste the equally delicious flavors of Bologna for vegans before ending your day with a creamy gelato – traditional or dairy-free!

A pleasant and very informative day thanks to our guide, Nicola, a fine connoisseur of Bologna.

Jean-Marc S

Nous avons eu la chance d'avoir un historien comme guide et la déambulation dans le quartier historique à été passionnante. Merci à Nicola pour cette journée. We were lucky enough to have a historian as a guide and the stroll through the historic district was fascinating. Thanks to Nicola for this day.

We had a wonderful tour of Bologna with Nicola in mid-May 2024. Nicola is a PhD student studying history, and my husband and I were history majors, so this was a great match for us. We had a wonderful tour of the major sights in Bologna's main square, as well as the amazing shields and crests at the Archiginnasio Library. The tour was less food-focused as it was on sights until the last part of the tour, which was fine with us; we had Bolognese street food with Nicola of Mortadella panini as well as Tigelli - with a special local delicacy thrown in, pig lard mixed with parm cheese - not an every day eat but it was super interesting and we were happy to try it. Nicola has an extensive list of Gelateria that he loves and we went to one that had "whipped cream" gelato - it was unbelievable. If you love history and want some local street food flavor thrown in, this is the tour for you. Grazie, Nicola!

5 food gifts and experiences to give Dad for Father's Day

Steak dinners are great, and ties are nice.

But when it comes to thanking the dad in your life, we think you can do better.

If Dad loves good food and drinks, there are plenty of fun options, from learning to create a beautiful cocktail to a box of brunch goodies to satisfy his sweet tooth.

Here are five great options for Dad this Father's Day.

A Jersey Shore beer tour

Join other beer aficionados for a small-group brewery tour by City Brew Tours, which offers two tours between three and five hours that visit three or four breweries and feature various beer styles, lunch, snacks and swag (starting at $85).

Participating breweries have included Alternate Ending Beer Co. in Aberdeen, Jughandle Brewing Company in Tinton Falls, The Whitechapel Projects in Long Branch, and Bradley Brew Project in Bradley Beach.

Go: 732-217-4673, citybrewtours.com/jerseyshore.

Beaches, food, music and more: Here's your guide to summer at the Jersey Shore

A private cocktail class

Does Dad love a good cocktail? He can learn to make one Friday, July 19, at 618 Restaurant in Freehold Borough. The restaurant's mixologists will lead a cocktail class from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., when participants will learn to create three drinks ($99 per person, includes light food and a goodie bag).

The class coincides with the launch of 618's new private barrel bourbon from Maker's Mark, which will be available for purchase ($65 the day of the class). To further elevate Dad's cocktail game, add a 618-branded glass decanter set, tequila tasting set or a wooden smoke top for smoking cocktails at home ($30 to $60).

Go: 618 Park Ave., Freehold Borough: 732-577-0001, 618nj.com.

A box of brunch goodies

If Dad likes to sleep in — and has a sweet tooth — this is a gift he will love to wake up to.

The brunch box from Brownstone Pancake Factory includes 10 Belgian waffles, 15 mini pancakes, 16 churro French toast squares and toppings to dress them up: peanut butter, chocolate, vanilla, caramel and raspberry sauces; maple syrup; Nutella; crushed Oreos; sprinkles; candy; Fruity Pebbles, Twinkies and Pop Tarts ($84.95).

A taco omakase dinner

Adventurous foodie dads will be thrilled you snagged a reservation for the 10-course taco omakase experience at Asbury Park's Barrio Costero. Chef Anthony Bustamante will highlight four regions of Mexico — the Yucatan Peninsula, Veracruz, Valley of Mexico and Chiapas — in his dishes, which will be served at the restaurant's chef counter.

The omakase style of dining means the chef determines what is served, so no ordering is required. The meal will be served three different nights: 7 p.m. Thursday, June 20; 6 and 9 p.m. Friday, June 21; and 5 p.m. Sunday, June 23. Cost is $200 per person; three cocktails are included.

Go: 610 Bangs Ave. in Asbury Park; 732-455-5554, barriocostero.com.

A box of burgers

Dads and grilling go hand in hand, and the grill box from Burger 25 has everything he needs.

The restaurant's burger package includes a dozen 6-once fresh Angus beef patties, secret seasoning. 24 slices of cheese and 12 Martin's Famous Potato Buns ($48).

Go: 199 Route 37 East in Toms River, 732-270-0025, and 1915 Long Beach Blvd. in Ship Bottom, 609-879-2525; burger25.com.
