Charleston is beautiful at any time of year. Yes, we’re a bit biased, but this city has so much to offer year-round that we wouldn’t usually recommend visiting one month over another. Yet, for Charleston in January and February, the city is quieter, the climate is milder and the beaches are (dare we say?) prettier. Here are our top reasons to visit Charleston, South Carolina, in winter.

Reasons to Visit Charleston in Winter

The weather .

Charleston weather is pretty mild all year long, but South Carolina winters see temperatures other areas of the U.S. can only dream about in spring. 

In February, you can expect the highs to be in the 60s and the lows in the 40s. And the best part? We rarely get any rain in the month of February (about five days on average).

That means, you can spend more time outside and less time in your hotel. And with so many outdoor activities (boating, hiking, picnicking and touring), you’ll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors here.

It’s the Perfect Time to Visit the Beach

Yes, we’ll say it again: the best reason to visit Charleston in winter is the weather. But we’ll go as far as to say that this is also the best time of year to head to the beach.

The days are warm and the nights are cool (but not bitterly cold). Which means there’s more time to spend on one of our white-sand beaches . While you won’t be able to don your two-piece and jump in the surf, you’ll enjoy a few rays of the sun and some fresh sea air. 

We recommend:

• Dressing in layers (in case the sun makes a longer appearance or the clouds roll in a little faster)
• Bringing a few beach games to keep your crew entertained
• Packing a picnic to enjoy while you gaze at the horizon

Tourist Season Doesn’t Start Until Spring

If you’re the type of traveler that doesn’t like running into other travelers, you’ll love Charleston in winter — because you probably won’t run into any tourists this month.

January, February, and March are relatively quiet in the Holy City, and most of our tourist attractions are equally quiet. That means you can stroll through the historic market without running into crowds, take a boat tour with little or no wait or visit one of our plantations without fighting through the crowds.

While spring in Charleston is marvelous, you’ll experience higher crowd levels at this time. 

Charleston Winter Wine Festival

If you love wine, we recommend heading to Charleston in January and February. Our Winter Wine Festival takes place here every winter and features some of the best wineries in the Lowcountry.

Talk to the winemakers, taste a few vintages and enjoy some light snacks. It’s a great reason to visit Charleston in February and geek out with fellow wine lovers. 

Charleston in January and February: It’s the Perfect Time for a Walking Tour

Yes, we happen to believe that pretty much any time of year is the perfect time for a walking tour . Maybe we’re biased? But we also happen to believe that walking tours in Charleston in January and February are simply wonderful for the following reasons:

• Less foot traffic

Charleston Is Romantic

Let’s face it: we always consider Valentine’s Day when thinking about February getaways. Not only is Charleston a great destination for nature lovers and outdoorsy types, but it’s also perfect for couples.

Visiting Charleston in January and February gives you another opportunity to snuggle up with your sweetie.

Charleston is home to dozens of romantic restaurants and hotels. If you’re headed to Charleston for Valentine’s Day, we recommend taking a romantic boat ride, heading to a spa for a couples’ massage or taking a bike ride for two across the Ravenel Bridge. Or, take a tour of the prettiest streets in Charleston .

And if you’re single? There are still plenty of things to do in Charleston that don’t require you to partner up.

South Carolina Winter: It’s Oyster Season

Charleston is known for its seafood — especially it’s oysters. And the best time to slurp a few salty morsels? Winter!

Winter is ‘oyster season’ in Charleston. The handy trick for determining the best months for oysters? Any month with the letter ‘R’ in its name! Generally, that means the colder months. 

Oysters love the South Carolina coast because of its flat coastline. You’ll find plenty of oyster beds along our coast, but if you’d rather take it easy by heading to a restaurant, we recommend:

Winter Is Great for Budget Travelers

One of the savviest reasons to visit Charleston in winter? The heaviest season for tourism in Charleston is the summer (when most families have the flexibility to travel because kids are on summer break). 

Since fewer people can jet off to the Holy City in winter, this also happens to be one of the cheapest months for travelers! You’ll find some of the lowest seasonal prices at hotels and certain attractions. You might even discover a few deals here, too. 

Some hotels even offer package deals in winter that include a discounted room rate and tickets to popular attractions. 

You’re a Lover of Wildlife

The Southeastern Wildlife Expo takes place in Charleston every February! That means wildlife aficionados head here for a three-day showcase of nature and wildlife. The expo attracts nature lovers, artists, hunters, and fishermen. 

Just some of the events include an art auction, a sheep and duck herding demo, and a wildlife sanctuary show. There are even a few events for kids, so feel free to bring your wildlife lovers in training.

Best Times To Visit Charleston, SC

The best time to visit Charleston is from March to May or from September to November when temperatures are mild – but not stifling. Hotel rates, however, will be high, especially around Easter. Also, the city will be thick with crowds "ooh-ing" and "ahh-ing" at the blooming magnolia trees, the Southern fried food and their tour guide's ghost stories. Steer clear of high prices and tourist swarms by visiting in the late fall or early winter.

Charleston in Winter: Your Guide To The Best Time To Visit 

There are a host of reasons to visit Charleston in winter. You’ll avoid the crowds, save on travel costs, and discover a bevy of seasonal festivals and special events. 

Anyone planning to visit (or re-visit) Charleston, South Carolina often wonders about the best time to go. Before we planned a January trip to Seabrook Island, about 25 miles from downtown Charleston, we had the same ambivalence but weren’t disappointed.

Of course, there isn’t any one-size-fits-all answer. The city is truly a four-season destination and when to go depends on both your calendar and interests. But we believe that winter can be one of the best times of year to visit Charleston.

During shoulder seasons—either spring or fall—the weather is close to perfect, neither too hot nor too cold.  The main draws of summer are the area’s magnificent beaches (only a short drive from downtown) offering sun, sand, and surf.

Winter weather in Charleston: What to expect

Based on our experience, we would describe winter weather in Charleston as largely temperate but variable .

Although Charleston isn’t typically thought of as a winter getaway, it is an ideal destination for travelers who want to escape the brutal cold and snow of the Northeast or Midwest.

Yes, there can be a frost and even some snow flurries in late December, adding the glow of pixie dust to the spires of the Holy City. But m ake no mistake, you won’t bask in the winter warmth of Florida.

Because the weather in Charleston is best characterized as unpredictable, you will need to be flexible and pack accordingly. 

As one Reddit user put it: Cold, gray and rainy. Or sunny and 75. And these could be consecutive days. 

Overall, the weather is generally decent in January and February, and Charleston can be one of the best places to visit in the USA in March . While you won’t want to dip in the ocean, average daily temperatures will be quite comfortable, hovering between 40-60°F. 

January is the coldest month of the year in Charleston with monthly rainfall only averaging between 3.1 and 4 inches during the winter months ( Charleston Daily , 2023). 

Why winter is a great time to visit

 There are compelling reasons to visit Charleston in winter:

• Most of the city’s many attractions and historical sites are open year-round. 
• In a city known for its cuisine, it can be hard to make restaurant reservations during the busy tourist seasons. This is less likely to be a problem in winter.
• Airline reservations are likely to be less costly than they are during the high seasons.
• Hotel and short-term rental accommodations are easier to come by during winter, especially compared to other warm-weather favorites like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Phoenix, or Scottsdale;  in fact, rates may be discounted.
• By December and especially after the holidays, the hordes of tourists have thinned out considerably.
• As you’ll read below, winter is a great time to take advantage of the seasonal festivals and special events designed to woo tourists.

Indulge your foodie passions

The annual Charleston Wine + Food Festival will take place between March 6-10, 2024.  There’s no better opportunity for food enthusiasts to sample the Low Country foods and the creative cuisine that has made Charleston a culinary mecca.

The Culinary Village, the centerpiece of the festival, is held at Riverfront Park in North Charleston. While listening to live music, visitors are able to sample bites of Lowcountry staple dishes served by local chefs and caterers, along with wine, beer, and spirits samplings.

In addition, other wine and food events take place across the Charleston Peninsula as well as in North Charleston, West Ashley, Mount Pleasant, Johns Island, and more.

Discover new restaurants with fixed-price menus

Sponsored by the Greater Charleston Restaurant Association, Charleston Restaurant Week will last ten days, taking place between January 11-21, 2024. 

Participating restaurants offer fixed-price breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner menus, both in downtown Charleston and in surrounding communities. It’s a great opportunity to sample new dishes . 

Attend the world’s largest oyster festival

The Low Country Oyster Fest , the largest oyster festival in the world , will take place at Boone Hall Plantation (Mount Pleasant) on February 4, 2024.

This family-friendly, charitable event (also sponsored by the Greater Charleston Restaurant Foundation) includes the chance to eat oysters by the bucket as well as oyster shucking contests, live music on the main stage, and plenty of wine and beer. Kids of all ages enjoy the Children’s Area and foodies will appreciate the Food Court, showcasing a variety of local restaurants. 

Set over 738 sprawling acres, Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens is a destination in itself. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is the oldest working plantation in the country, with beautiful gardens in bloom throughout the year.

Take a “Second Sunday” stroll on King Street

On the Second Sunday of every month (winter, too), historic King Street (the city’s main shopping street) becomes a pedestrian-only zone between noon and 5 pm. 

Locals and visitors of all ages come to eat, shop, and enjoy the festive sense of community, enhanced by art vendors and street musicians. Apart from “Second Sundays,” King Street offers three miles of one-of-a-kind shops and boutiques with abundant opportunities to take advantage of winter sales.

Visit exquisite homes and gardens 

Charleston is known for its gracious, well-preserved homes that help tell the city’s story. 

The month-long Charleston Festival (previously called the annual Festival of Houses and Gardens) straddles the seasons (beginning in winter and extending into early spring) and will take place from March 14 – April 14, 2024. 

Visitors can tour the interiors of these exclusive homes and get a glimpse of their private gardens. Tours and events vary by the day.

This year, the Charleston Festival will feature an exclusive site-specific exhibition of original works of art by world-renowned artist, Jill Hooper.

Shop for one-of-a-kind antiques 

Antique lovers will want to visit the Charleston Antiques Show , which will take place at Festival Hall on the weekend from March 21-24, 2024, organized by The Antiques Council.

More than 30 prominent antique exhibitors showcase decorative and fine arts from a range of periods, and visitors can learn about incorporating antiques into their modern-day decor. Silver, contemporary and fine jewelry, maps, prints, oriental rugs, folk art, ceramics, garden antiques, and more will be on display.

A preview party and small group talks with designers are associated with the event.

Discover the region’s wildlife 

Wildlife lovers “flock” to the annual Southeastern Wildlife Exposition , taking place this year from February 16-18, 2024 at the Charleston Gaillard Center on Calhoun Street. 

The exposition brings together a broad range of exhibitors who pay tribute to nature with their handcrafted goods, outdoor gear, sporting apparel, artisan creations, and more. The event offers a unique opportunity to interact with these artists.

This year, the exposition will include a concert by Wyoming-born Ian Munsick, a pioneer of the new brand of country music.

The 19th annual Wild Dunes Author Event & Weekend will take place at the Isle of Palms from January 13-14, 2024, a real lure for book lovers. 

Three best-selling authors will be featured: William Kent Krueger, Shelby Van Pelt, and Stacy Willingham. The Sunday author event will be headlined by New York Times best-selling author Mary Alice Monroe and will include discussions and book signings.

Proceeds from the event are used to support literacy, providing one-on-one tutoring for local elementary students. The festival takes place at Wild Dunes , a Hyatt island resort set on a pristine beach that’s especially peaceful in winter.

Make a pilgrimage to the magnificent Angel Oak tree

This iconic southern live oak is considered to be one of the oldest east of the Mississippi and a Low Country treasure. A 400-year-old tree that has survived hurricanes and natural disasters, the Angel Oak Tree is humongous at 65 feet tall and more than 25 feet in width. 

Live oaks like this one are evergreen so even though they shed some leaves, they remain vibrant even in winter. The popular tree receives about 400,000 visitors each year so winter is an ideal time to take photos documenting your visit with the tree as a backdrop.

Sip & savor at the Charleston Wine Festival

With wine festivals in winter, spring, and summer, you might say that Charleston is a “spirited” destination. 

The Charleston Winter Wine Festival will be held at Festival Hall on January 27, 2024. Participants will be able to sample more than 50 wines, mimosas, beers, and White Claw, accompanied by live music and a DJ.

Built in 1939 and renovated in 2008, the stately event venue is located in the downtown Harleston village neighborhood.

Experience the dazzling Holiday Festival of Lights

Take a ride to James Island National Park to enjoy the annual Holiday Festival of Lights that has been held since 1990. 

Sponsored by the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission, the dazzling festival, which opens on November 10 and extends through December 31, 2023, features a three-mile drive with 750 light displays and some two million lights!

Other family-friendly attractions include the festival train, an old-fashioned carousel, marshmallow roasting pits, a giant holiday sand sculpture, a climbing wall, a visit with Santa (of course), and much more. An estimated 25,000 hot cocoas and 19,000 marshmallow sticks are sold on the festival grounds each year.

Learn about the city’s history and African-American heritage

Bulldog Tours is one of several local companies that offer walking tours. Compared to summer, winter is an ideal time to walk around the city without heat, humidity, or insects.

The American History and Heritage walking tour brings history to life. It offers participants the opportunity to learn about the influence and experience of African Americans in the Lowcountry on a two-hour tour featuring stops at Aiken Rhett House, Mother Emanuel AME Church, and the Philip Simmons Prayer Garden.

Take a cozy carriage ride

Even on days when the weather turns a bit nippy, visitors can stay warm under a blanket on a horse-drawn (or mule-drawn) carriage ride along the city’s cobblestone streets. 

It’s a great way to see the sites, get a feel for the city’s architecture and learn about the rich history of the Charleston Historic District.

Go horseback riding on the beach

Ever dream of riding a horse on the beach?

Seabrook Island Equestrian Center caters to riders of all skill levels with guided trail rides and pony rides.  Guides generally head out around low tide when shorebirds, seabirds, and local stand-feeding dolphins are most active so riders can learn about local and migratory wildlife. 

Children under the age of 8 can take pony rides. Open Monday thru Saturdays, It’s best to make reservations in advance.

Don’t give up on a beach day

But even in winter, you don’t have to give up on enjoying the beach.

You could catch a sunny, warm day and walkers will enjoy the serenity of winter walks at some of the area’s most appealing beaches, including the Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island, and Folly Beach.  

• Even in winter, it is still prudent to plan your visit to Charleston in advance. Many ticketed events sell out quickly soon after they are announced. 
• Explore each of the website links above and note that many events have partnered with hotels.
• If your visit is a last-minute one, stop in at the Charleston Visitors Center located at 375 Meeting Street in downtown Charleston. The Visitor Center itself is a historic site. Construction of the building housing the center, in one of five railroad buildings, began in 1840.

With its ever-growing food scene, rich history and colorful architecture, and proximity to beautiful beaches, it’s little wonder that our readers have voted it the South’s Best City multiple times. Of course, the best time to visit Charleston is largely dependent on what you’re hoping to do once you’re there. Whether you’re heading to town for the historic walking tours, one of the city’s many festivals, or a breezy day on the water, here are the best (and worst) times to visit Charleston, South Carolina.

Tourist Seasons in Charleston, South Carolina

Before planning your trip, take the city’s tourist seasons into consideration, as they’ll likely impact everything from the crowds to airfare and hotel prices.

• High Season: March through May and September through November
• Shoulder Season: June through August
• Low Season: December (except for the holidays) through February

Best Times to Visit Charleston for Good Weather

Spring and fall are prime times to comfortably explore all of Charleston’s beauty. Take it from local meteorologist Josh Marthers of WCBD News 2 : “Any time is a great time to visit the best city in the world, but a couple of periods really shine. Our driest months are typically April and November with quite mild temperatures from late March through mid-May. We see those nicer temperatures and lower humidity levels return late September through mid-November.” Average temperatures in April range from upper 50s to low 70s, while those in November from low 50s to upper 60s. 

One caveat worth considering: The city is subject to hurricanes, with the Atlantic season running from the start of June through the end November and peak time for such storms lasting August through October. Of course, to Marthers’ point, assuming that there are no tropical storms or hurricanes on the radar, October is a lovely, mild-weathered month to visit, with average temperatures ranging from low 60s to mid 70s.

Best Time to Visit Charleston for Lower Prices and Smaller Crowds

Planning a trip for the winter months (December through February) is the best way to experience so many of the Holy City’s highlights without having to battle crowds or pay premium rates for accommodations (holidays and festival weekends can be exceptions). While you likely won’t be swimming—unless you brave one of the area beaches’ New Year’s Day Polar Plunges—the milder winter weather still allows for beautiful beach walks and bundled-up picnics. 

For Tyler Page Wright Friedman, certified tour guide and founder of Walk & Talk Charleston, winter is actually one of her favorite times of year in the city: "Winter is an ideal season to explore downtown and all of our world-class museums," she says. And the rewards extend beyond lower cost and smaller crowds: "Historically, the holiday season was the social season in Charleston," she explains. "Many of the gardens were designed to bloom during this time, and so we have the beautiful camellias, Christmas senna, and the sweetgrass has turned a beautiful shade of pink." It's also oyster season, Friedman notes, so put all of those together, and you've landed yourself the perfect Charleston winter weekend.

For those willing who don't mind sweating a little, you may also consider visiting during the city’s shoulder season, June through August.  Chef Mike Lata , who owns two of the city's most beloved restaurants ( FIG and The Ordinary ), says late June is the shoulder season’s sweet spot: “Things start to slow down, so it’s a bit easier to get hotel deals and reservations at restaurants. The weather is warm but not stifling.  There is also lots of great local food to eat and the water has had a chance to warm up, making for great fishing, surfing, and general beachgoing.”

Best Times to Visit Charleston for Festivals and Events 

The Holy City plays host to a number of festivals and events throughout the year, all of which celebrate the various hallmarks of the historic peninsula town.  Festival season here kicks off with mid-February’s Southeastern Wildlife Exposition , more commonly referred to as SEWE (pronounced “see-wee”), when nature lovers, conservationists, and outdoorsmen descend on the city to shop a host of wildlife-oriented artists and exhibitors, attend cooking demos, and watch dogs participate in water jumping competitions. (The weekend is also an exception to winter’s typically smaller crowds.) 

In March and April, the Historic Charleston Foundation hosts its longest-running annual event, The Charleston Festival (formerly called the Festival of Houses and Gardens), which celebrates the city’s history and culture through a series of lectures on preservation and design, as well as tours of privately owned homes and gardens. April’s first Saturday also lays claim to the annual Cooper River Bridge Run , which invites runners and walkers of all skill levels to “Get Over It,” “It” being the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge that connects the suburb of Mount Pleasant to downtown Charleston over the Cooper River. 

Late May into June brings one of Charleston’s hallmark events, Spoleto Festival USA , when world-class performers, musicians, dancers, and artists from around the globe bring their talents to the Holy City for a 17-day series of live performances, art shows and exhibitions, and artist talks.

You’ll also find the Southern Living team in town twice throughout the year—in September for our Tailgate Party (part of the first-ever Food & Wine Classic in Charleston ) and again in December for Illumination Charleston (a curated holiday market, plus demos from our favorite chefs and entertaining experts; 2024 dates not yet announced). 

Best Times to Visit Charleston for a Beach Trip

If you’re planning to spend most of your Lowcountry stay playing on the area’s surrounding beaches , rather than diving into historic walking tours, summer is a great time to visit, as an ocean breeze or quick dip in the water can relieve even the hottest, muggiest day. By June, the ocean and other waterways have warmed up, making for comfortable swimming and other watersports, like surfing, paddleboarding, and kayaking. 

Pop-up afternoon thunderstorms aren’t uncommon in the summer, but they usually clear up as quickly as they roll in. July and August tend to see the most rain (8 or 9 days of rainfall), so if you’re faced with a wet day, take advantage of one of the city’s many museums, from The Gibbes Museum of Art to the recently opened International African American Museum , or explore all the amazing local shops .

Worst Times to Visit Charleston

The worst time to visit Charleston is subjective, as it depends on your personal travel preferences and those activities you plan to enjoy while there. However, as a born-and-raised Charleston native who often felt pity for the sweating, red-faced tourists who trudged past as I sat in the comfort of my mom’s air-conditioned car, July and August are about the most miserable months to plan a trip centered around walking tours and general sightseeing. In my experience, I’ve found that a beach day on Sullivan’s Island —or a reservation at one of our many delicious (and air-conditioned) restaurants—are about the only antidotes to our summer’s scorching heat.

It’s also worth noting that Charleston is home to a couple of colleges, including The Citadel and the College of Charleston, so if you’re not looking to be swept up in the excitement of move-in or graduation weekends, consult their academic calendars before booking your travel.

With mild weather and plenty of sunshine, February is a beautiful time of year to visit Charleston’s Sea Islands. February in Charleston boasts spring-like temperatures much of the country has yet to experience, and there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the South Carolina Coast.

What is the Weather Like in Charleston SC in February?

In February, Charleston boasts mild temperatures in the 60s much of the time during the day. Layers and a light jacket are perfect for chillier evenings and some rain gear just in case you experience a shower or two.

Typically, this time of the year is perfect because humidity hasn't taken over yet and the nights are ideal for cozy bonfires. February varies year to year, and you can even experience temperatures as high as the 80s occasionally. You'll enjoy sunny afternoons as well as overcast days.

Things to do in Charleston SC in February

Charleston gardens and parks.

Downtown Charleston boasts an incredible list of parks and squares to visit. The White Point Garden is believed to be one of the U.S's oldest pubic parks, while the Waterfront Park is an award-winning and modern space. On Kiawah Island, you'll find pristine nature and opportunities to view wildlife. The Heron Park Nature Center , Marsh Island Park, and Kiawah Beachwalker Park are great spots to visit and enjoy the scenery.

On Kiawah Island, there are about 30 miles of paved bike paths and 10 miles of flat bike-able beach to cruise. And while Seabrook Island doesn't have as many bike paths, you can still ride all throughout the island. Book a bike rental and explore the Lowcountry on two wheels!

Deciding on the best time to visit Charleston, SC is the crucial first step in planning your amazing Charleston vacation. Lucky for you, there’s never a bad time to visit Charleston! But that doesn’t help you decide when’s the best time for you .

So, let’s review all four seasons in Charleston and what to expect in each, so you can make an informed decision for when’s the best time to visit Charleston for you!

Visiting Charleston, SC: When’s the Best Time to Go?

Charleston is South Carolina’s charming, historical, oceanfront powerhouse. The city was founded in the early 1600’s when the Carolina colony was first established, and Charleston quickly grew into the South’s most important port city.

Today, it’s still an important port city, but it’s also become one of the United States’ top vacation destinations . Travel + Leisure ranked Charleston the USA’s #1 City and travel destination for 9 years in a row!

There’s so much to see and do and eat here that it appeals to pretty much everyone. Charleston can accommodate solo travelers, couples, or even the whole family.

So, when’s the best time to go to Charleston? Is there a best time of year to visit Charleston?

Answer: when to go depends on what you want to see the most.

There is no bad time to visit Charleston; each season has its own events and attractions.

When is high season, shoulder season, and low season in Charleston?

High season.

There are actually TWO “high seasons” in Charleston: March through May and again in September through November.

The first encompasses Easter, azalea blooms, and spring break.

The second is everyone that wants a warm beach vacation without experiencing the intense Southern summers. Don’t be fooled by the time of year; fall is not crisp, cool weather in Charleston.

Shoulder Season

Shoulder season is June through August for Charleston. Not typical shoulder season months. In Charleston’s case, it’s because of the summer heat.

Southern summers are famously hot and humid . I know many a Midwesterner that claims their summers get just as hot, but that’s missing the point.

The temperatures may be similar for a few months, but the duration and accompanying humidity in the South makes everything worse. Trust me, I’ve lived in both regions for over a decade each: Southern summers are worse.

Luckily for Charleston, the city is situated on the coast and enjoys cooling ocean breezes to help alleviate the heat and humidity.

It still gets obnoxiously hot and humid; just not as bad as inland cities with no breezes.

Least Crowded Season

December through February sees the fewest tourists , but I hesitate to call it a low season.

Several large festivals are held during this time, and snowbirds flock to the monthly rentals on Kiawah and Seabrook Islands.

Hurricane Season in Charleston

Another important season to consider when planning a trip to Charleston: Hurricane Season.

June 1 through November 30 is the official time frame for hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico.

In reality, hurricanes rarely hit in the early or later months of the official hurricane season, and Charleston is geographically less likely to experience hurricanes anyway.

And when they do show up, the city usually gets more warning than a day or two, so you’ll have time to reschedule your travel.

While hurricane season is something to consider, I wouldn’t avoid it like the plague. It’s just not as common a problem here as it is in someplace like Florida or the Gulf Coast states.

Spring in Charleston: March, April, May

Charleston’s first high season is spring, and for good reason.

>>Easter

One of Charleston’s nicknames is the Holy City, thanks to its overzealousness with building churches over the centuries. Partner that with the warmer weather and possibility of blooming flowers, and Easter week becomes one of the busiest and most expensive times to visit Charleston .

If crowds aren’t your thing, then skip this week and come the week before or after.

>>Azalea Season

Azaleas are a big deal in Charleston. Found in every single yard and adorning everything from neighborhood entrances to business parking lots, azaleas are everywhere.

The end of March and beginning of April is mega-bloom time. Dates vary from year to year, but this is always one of the best times to visit Charleston .

The city and surrounding area bursts into bloom. Landscaping turns pink, white, and purple, and there is no escaping it…for about two weeks.

Then, the azaleas are all gone, and we’re left with boring green bushes. But don’t worry, the rest of the flowers stay in bloom for much longer!

It’s a gorgeous time to visit and a photographer’s dream , if you catch peak bloom. The Ashley River Plantations are especially magical to visit during this time.

>>Beaches

Spring also sees the Charleston beaches beginning to wake up. The water is still kind of cold, but warm days make it possible to relax on the beach without a jacket.

Spring breakers (though not as bad as Florida beaches), bachelorette parties, and girls’ trips all start to show up regularly.

Fair Warning : May is technically spring, but in Charleston it feels more like summer.

Summer in Charleston: June, July, August

This is the South, and it gets hot and humid in the summer. It’s unavoidable. But if you can handle the heat, then your reward is shoulder season prices and somewhat smaller crowds .

>>Summer Temperatures

Expect highs in the low 90’s °F and lows never leaving the mid-to-high 70’s °F at night.

Avoid going outside in the middle part of the day when it’s hottest. Instead, go explore one of the many indoor activities Charleston has to offer.

June 1 is the official beginning of hurricane season, but don’t let that get you down. Hurricanes rarely show up in Charleston in June; they are most active in August.

Pro Tip : I wouldn’t not go to Charleston because it’s hurricane season, but I would get travel insurance in case you need to reschedule.

The days preceding a storm can actually be some of the best days for waves if you’re a boogie boarder, and storm clouds are what add that gorgeous deep purple coloring to sunsets .

>>Sea Turtle Nesting & Hatchlings

Loggerhead sea turtles return to Charleston’s beaches every summer to lay their eggs. Hatchlings start to poke their little heads out of the sand in July.

Note that it is illegal to touch or disturb a sea turtle or its nest!

Beware when walking on the beaches in the evenings. Flashlights confuse turtles and discourage them from laying eggs.

Visit Edisto Beach State Park and attend a night walk with a ranger to see the sea turtles and learn more about them.

In summer, the beaches are booming , and beach parking will be at its most expensive and hardest to find, particularly on the weekends.

Charleston has 5 major beaches, none of which are on the downtown peninsula, by the way.

Isle of Palms and Folly Beach are the two most popular beaches, and both have piers as well.

**Note the Folly Beach Pier is being reconstructed. The new pier is scheduled to open in Spring 2023.**

>>Fireworks

Watch fireworks everywhere!

Joe Riley Stadium on the Ashley River side of the downtown peninsula is home to Charleston’s minor league baseball team, the RiverDogs . You can count on them for a fun evening out and Friday Night Fireworks, all season long.

Patriot’s Point hosts the area’s largest fireworks display for the official July 4 th celebration.

If you watch from downtown along the waterfront, you get all the Patriot’s Point fireworks but no music. It’s weird, but free!

Notable Events in Summer

Charleston doesn’t see a typical fall season. In fact, it rarely sees fall foliage colors until sometime in November.

You’ll find pumpkin spice everything, but the weather doesn’t match. No crisp, cool evenings until November-ish, and there will still likely be 70°F highs.

The residual warmth is a big reason why this is considered Charleston’s second high season .

Fall is the end of hurricane season. September is still very much summer weather , second only to August for hurricanes, but the pesky storms rarely affect Charleston by October and November.

October and November weather is perfect for exploring downtown Charleston.

The cooler weather means you won’t be drenched in sweat for walking a block, but it’s warm enough that you won’t need a jacket, either.

Stroll the Battery to see Charleston Harbor, or find the Pineapple Fountain in Waterfront Park. See Rainbow Row. Visit a historic home. Peruse the City Market. Enjoy dinner and drinks at a rooftop restaurant or bar.

Ocean temperatures are still pretty good into the beginning of October, when it starts to cool off. This is the perfect time of year to go to the beach in Charleston without the crowds.

Everyone else in the country is out leaf peeping, so the beaches have little to no crowds.

Winter in Charleston: December, January, February

It’s only fair after the extreme summers that Charleston gets mild winters . Charleston winter temperatures are so mild that a coat heavier than a fleece or hoodie is usually unnecessary.

It doesn’t snow or ice here , so understand that this part of the country is ill-equipped to handle it.

If it does snow, even just a few inches, be prepared for businesses to close or modify hours and watch out for inexperienced drivers.

Flowers bloom year-round in Charleston. December and January are camellia season , a specialty at Middleton Place Plantation on the Ashley River.

Camellias are found almost as prolifically as the azaleas in the spring. Thankfully, however, camellia blooms last longer than two weeks.

Roses are also seen throughout the winter in Charleston. Stroll through roses in Hampton Park near The Citadel and downtown.

Empty beaches can get chilly on a windy day, and then turn around the next day and be perfect t-shirt weather.

Bonus: beach parking is free almost everywhere this time of year.

Snowbirds flock to Kiawah and Seabrook Islands for monthly rentals to escape colder climates. These private islands are their own worlds, and the beaches are completely private.

While winter is low season, the winter holidays are by no means slow. Christmas, New Year’s, and Valentine’s Day are all popular times to visit Charleston.

Sometimes, you just need to escape the hassle of snow and ice and trade it in for a week in the sun with palmetto trees.

Prices will spike at each holiday, but not as bad as, say, New York City for New Year’s.

Charleston is frequently rated one of the top romantic destinations in the US, and makes a great Valentine’s Day weekend getaway destination. There are plenty of Romantic Things to do in Charleston for every couple.

For the Beaches?

If you want to get in the water, summer and early fall are good options for the beaches. Expect crowds.

If you prefer to stay on land and just need warm, sunny weather to sit and read on the beach, spring and late fall/early winter are ideal. Less people and plenty of sunshine!

Spring is a busy time in Charleston for festivals and events.

Winter, excluding holidays, is considered Charleston’s low season and typically has the best prices for lodging.

Staying in the downtown historic district becomes an option for those with smaller budgets, who would otherwise need to stay in nearby Mount Pleasant or possibly further out in the high seasons.

Most tours do not have seasonal pricing. If they do, it’s often only a $5-$10 reduction. The only exception to this is some of the boat tours and most of the water activities, like SUP or kayaking, do not run in the winter.

Charleston businesses and restaurants are also not seasonal. A steady stream of visitors year-round means most businesses don’t have to close in the low season.

Charleston's balmy southern climate opens up all sorts of interesting adventures at different times of the year. Summer is the time for beach trips and ambles around historic houses and museums, but the city has a special charm in winter, when the crowds thin out and the holiday vibe comes with mild temperatures that could almost be described as warm in the afternoons.

Then there's the fall, when the summer heat has died down and major festivals and restaurant events kick off the autumn harvest. Crowds gather well into November, but the mild weather means you can often stroll along the city's historic streets without a coat even when snow is falling in the north of the country.

No matter what time of year, you’ll find plenty of places to go and things to do. Here’s a breakdown of the best times to visit the Lowcountry for the best activities, weather, low prices and more.

Low season (December–February) is the time to evade the crowds and save money

The winter months from December to February are considered the low season for tourism, but if you’re someone who likes to escape the cold, traveling to the Lowcountry at this time will warm up your winter. Daytime temperatures hover around 60°F (16°C), a very pleasant temperature for the holiday festivities. Airfares drop too, though there's a slight spike for the holidays in December and Valentine’s Day in February.

Shoulder season (June–August) is best for beach trips and indoor activities

Like any American city close to the coast, Charleston is all about the beaches in summer. The temperatures can climb above 90°F (32°C) and with the thick humidity, it's a time to seek out salty sea breezes and maybe a colorfully layered cocktail. Tourists and locals move seamlessly between downtown and the Atlantic Coast; while beach rentals are usually booked up by June, you might catch a break on availability and costs if you stay inland.

High season (March–May & September–November) is the best time for festivals and exploring on foot

Charleston has two peak seasons, coinciding with milder temperatures on either side of the hot, humid summer. Spring and fall are marked by mild weather, big festivals and farmers' markets. Hotel prices are at their highest during spring break and Easter; the late fall offers the perfect mix of moderate temperatures, fewer tourists and more affordable rates. April, May, September and October are the most popular months for weddings — many come to Charleston specifically to tie the knot.

As the temperatures start to rise, locals and tourists shed their winter layers and start finding reasons to get outside. April is a busy month for tourism in the Lowcountry. Several outdoor events draw huge crowds, and it’s a popular time for Charleston weddings. Flowers are in full bloom, and so are the spring festivities. Just be sure to bring an umbrella — sudden deluges can sneak up on you just about any time. This is when the Lowcountry really hits its stride. With summer just around the corner, people flock to the beach for surfing, dolphin-watching and morning yoga. June 1 kicks off hurricane season; only a small number of hurricanes hit the Lowcountry directly, but it’s worth taking out trip insurance if you book between now and November. Chances are you'll be able to relax and enjoy the pleasantly warm weather that precedes the summer peak. Key events: Park Circle Pride Week , Charleston Carifest

As the temperatures and humidity levels climb, the events calendar and crowds lighten up. This is a great time to catch some education of Charleston's complex and thought-provoking history. Little ones can keep their minds agile at the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry , and adults can soak up some culture during the First Saturday Art Stroll walks and some history (combined with shopping) at the Charleston City Market . There’s no way around it: August is sticky and sweaty and the reason air conditioning was invented (probably). A Gullah-Geechee tour in an air-conditioned Mercedes-Benz might be the best way to learn about Charleston's rich African American heritage while you beat the heat. It’s also fun to grab a drink and dance the night away at the  Shaggin' on the Cooper party on Mount Pleasant Pier. Key events: Grape Stomp Festival , SC Reggae Jerk and Wine Fest

The social calendar picks up a lot of steam as the Charleston air starts to cool off a little. September offers a wide range of activities and plenty of music and family fun. October brings a flood of tourists back in as the weather becomes cooler and more manageable. This is an enjoyable time to explore Charleston on foot or by carriage. As the year winds down and the holiday season ramps up, visitor numbers pick up in Charleston. The combination of mild weather and holiday cheer has a special vibe, and you can knock out your gift shopping at the shops along King and Meeting streets downtown, the Tanger outlet stores in North Charleston, and Towne Centre in Mount Pleasant. Charleston 's colorful historic homes and cobblestone streets, world-class museums, and nearby beaches make it a popular destination. And while the weather is moderate year-round, the best times to visit Charleston are from March to May and from September to November. In the spring, the flowers are in full bloom, the heat and humidity haven't set in, and hurricane season hasn't begun. Come fall, there are fewer crowds, cheaper hotel rooms, and ideal temperatures.

Whenever you decide to make your journey, use this guide to plan your next trip.

Located on the South Carolina coast, Charleston has a subtropical climate , which makes temperatures and conditions favorable almost all year. In winter, highs are in the mid-50s and rarely dip below freezing, even at night. Summers can be hot and humid, with temperatures soaring into the upper 80s and low 90s—especially in the city proper. This is a good time to take advantage of nearby beaches, but you'll want to pack an umbrella: August is the city's wettest month. Spring and fall offer the most favorable weather, with temperatures in the 60s and 70s, sparse humidity, and little rain.  

Peak Season in Charleston

There are two peak seasons in Charleston. The first is in spring, from March to May. This is when the magnolia trees and azaleas are in full bloom, the temperatures are mild, and annual events like the Charleston Food & Wine Festival and Spoleto Festival USA are in full swing. The city is a particularly popular destination during the Easter holidays and spring break, so expect hotel rates to soar and attractions to be crowded.

The second peak comes in the fall (between September and November), when the temperatures cool off, the humidity is less stifling, and the city is ideal for walking and exploring.

Hurricane Season in Charleston

Because of its location on the Eastern Seaboard, the city is at risk for hurricanes. Hurricane season is from June 1 to November 30 annually, with peak time between August and October. However, South Carolina has a lower risk of hurricanes than Florida or other states on the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. On average, only 11 percent of all hurricanes making landfall since 1851 have hit South Carolina; only six of them were Category 3 or higher.

While odds are unlikely you'll encounter a hurricane during your trip, most hotels and airlines will refund or rebook your trip if you do. You can also purchase hurricane insurance as an extra precaution.

Winter in Charleston

Winter is off-season in Charleston, with crowds dissipating after the holidays and remaining sparse through early spring. Expect cheaper hotel rates, fewer tourists, and relatively mild temperatures, with highs in the upper 50s and lower 60s and lows in the mid-40s. If you plan to do a lot of walking, layer and pack a warm jacket: It can get quite breezy and chilly, especially by the waterfront.

Events to check out:

• Holiday Festival of Lights at James Island : This can't-miss event features a 3-mile driving tour through a display of lights, s'more roasting stations, carousel and train rides, and other activities for the whole family. It takes place during the holiday season from mid-November through the end of December.
• Southeastern Wildlife Exposition : A three-day event in February that includes conservation education, sporting events, art exhibitions, and other events dedicated to wildlife and nature.

Spring in Charleston

With ideal temperatures and the entire city in bloom, spring is peak season in Charleston. Hotel rates are at their highest here, and you'll fight crowds for popular attractions; buy your tickets and make your dinner reservations in advance.

• Charleston Food + Wine Festival : Held the first week in March, the festival features culinary demonstrations, food and beverage tastings, and educational sessions with some of the country's top food personalities like Katie Button and Edward Lee.
• Festival of Houses and Gardens : For a few weeks in March and April, tour some of the city's finest private homes and gardens at this annual festival. It also includes culinary demonstrations, walking tours, and musical performances.
• Charleston Jazz Festival : A weekend-long celebration in April that hosts internationally-renowned musicians like Regina Carter as well as local blues, Brazilian, and other artists.
• Spoleto Festival USA : This performing arts festival takes place in venues throughout the city over three weeks in May and June. From opera and chamber music to dance, jazz, theater, and more, the festival is a one-of-a-kind celebration of the arts.

Summer in Charleston

Summers can be oppressively hot and humid in Charleston, but air conditioning is plentiful, and the nearby beaches offer some respite from the weather. You'll still find larger crowds through the 4th of July holiday, but in general, the city is less crowded and rates are lower during this time of year. Pack rain gear for August as it's the city's wettest month.

• Celebrate Independence Day at Patriots Point : This has the area's largest fireworks display. Purchase a ticket to watch them aboard the historic USS Yorktown, or pack a cooler and plop a chair down on the land nearby (there is a small parking fee).
• Freshfields Village Starlight Cinema Series : Enjoy movies under the stars at this free film series. The event takes place at Freshfields Village on Kiawah Island. Check the schedule to see what's playing and at what time.

Fall in Charleston

Fall marks another peak time to visit Charleston, when temperatures cool off and summer beach visitors retreat for the school year. You can expect comfortable temperatures in the 60s and 70s well into November, but do be aware of hurricanes and tropical storms.

• Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch : From a corn maze to a petting zoo, rock climbing wall, and hayride, Boone Hall offers autumnal fun for the whole family throughout the month of October.
• Preservation Society of Charleston's Self-Guided Monthly Fall Tours : Explore the city's finest homes and gardens ranging from 18th-century homes to modern dwellings via these tours in October.

The best times to visit Charleston are from March through May and from September through November. In the spring, temperatures are mild and you avoid hurricane season. In the fall, crowds dwindle and hotel and airfare rates are cheaper.

Charleston is best enjoyed over a three-day, long weekend. The city's manageable size allows you to experience the most pertinent sites—like top-notch restaurants and vibrant art galleries—with a short trip.

Charleston is consistently ranked as one of the top tourism destinations in the country – and often the world. And with a subtropical climate, it’s a year-round destination. More people visit the oldest South Carolina city every year.

So, when is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Charleston entirely depends on what you want to do – even if you don’t have any idea what to do. There are several good times each year to visit Charleston and a few bad times.

Here’s a breakdown of the best time to visit Charleston for different activities.

Weather in Charleston

When the first British settlers arrived in Charles Towne, they found the summer heat and humidity so overbearing they began traveling inland for a respite. Some only traveled as far as Summerville – hence the town’s name – while others eventually traveled as far as Pendleton in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.

Charleston’s peak tourism season from June through September have average highs in the 80s and lows in the 70s – it never really cools down. The winter’s hover between highs in the 50s and lows in the 40s with the occasional dip below freezing for a day or two at a time.

But the spring and autumn are sweet spots with highs reaching the 60s and upper 70s, but overnight lows in the 50s. There is nothing better than an evening stroll on King Street after sunset in April.

10 Things to Do in Charleston in February

The month of February in Charleston is much warmer than it seems, both in temperature and activities. If you are visiting during this month, you should know that there are many activities and events not to be missed.

Are you going to Charleston in February and you are worried that there is not much to do? Well, there is nothing to worry about, because in this city there are always things to see and do and February is a great month where you will always have a full agenda. Although in this city there will be winter temperatures, in comparison they are much warmer than the rest of the United States , so you can avoid the cold and enjoy culture, sports and history while touring the city.

There will always be a plan for you in this winter month if you visit Charleston. I recommend that you do not miss this visit because the city is much less crowded than other months and there are unique and world-renowned events that you should not miss. Will you join me to know them?

1. Get to know the fauna of the southeastern United States

If you are visiting the beautiful city of Charleston in February, you should not miss the great wildlife event of the southeastern United States: the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE) , which has been held for four decades and is therefore an institution. Generally, this exposition is held for three days in mid-February, so if you are close to those dates, you can enjoy it to the fullest.

Inside the exhibition you will find wonderful things. I recommend that you buy a general admission ticket which costs about 35€ and can be used to participate in one of the three days of the event, although on Sundays it is cheaper. You can also buy a three-day ticket for around 70€, which is particularly convenient if you have time, because each day you will be able to see different activities and exhibits in one of the most important exhibitions of its kind in the United States.

When you go, you'll be able to see an extensive collection of wildlife art , as well as demonstrations of animals in their habitats and exhibits on animals of the American Southeast. For all these reasons, it's an ideal opportunity for you to go with children. Also note that this event is held at several sites in the city, so I recommend visiting at least two in one day. The organization usually offers shuttle services between the venues.

• Location : Held at five different venues, including the Charleston Marriott, the Gaillard Center SEWE and Charleston Place, where the art gallery is located.
• When : mid-February, for three days.
• Price : the ticket for Friday or Saturday costs about 35 €, but if it is on Sunday it goes down to about 30 €. The three-day ticket package costs about 70 €.
• Hours : Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

2. Take a carriage tour on Valentine's Day

Going to Charleston as a couple? You should know that in the city there is a lot to do for Valentine's Day, so the month of February is perfect for you to share with your partner through its streets. And what better way than taking a historic tour in a carriage on this day of love? Yes, this is a historical tour, but I assure you that there is a lot of romance when you ride through cobblestone streets in a carriage that emulates the 19th century.

This is a fantastic way to relive history, because you get to see how white, wealthy people lived in the city in the 19th century, as well as understand how they moved around the city. Not to mention that on that day the streets will be decorated with Valentine's Day decorations , so between that and the carriage you will be able to take the best pictures with your partner, where you will feel like you are in the 19th century.

The carriage tours usually end at Bay Street and cost around 60 €, but this is not the only thing you can do that day. It is also possible to enjoy concerts and events in general, but also parades in the city. There are even plantations on the outskirts of the city where rice was once produced and humans were enslaved, but which today are reinterpreted as a place for love. Without exaggeration, this is the case of the Magnolia Plantations and Gardens .

For Valentine's Day, you can find different chocolate stations and many musicians , singing songs such as serenades and other romantic pieces. This can be a family event among the activities in Charleston to take the kids and you only pay for the access to the plantation, but there is no need to pay an additional entrance fee.

3. Lunch at the corkage festival

Despite the cold weather, February is a month to eat and drink the best produce. 6. Artwalk, the first Friday of the month

But not only: in this street there is a lot to buy, especially in the lower part which is considered the best area to buy antiques in this part of the United States. If you prefer to buy clothes, then you should go to the middle part of the street, with international franchises. 9. Shelter from the cold by watching a field hockey or basketball game

Think February is such a cold month that you won't be able to enjoy any sports in town? The other great option I recommend is basketball. In Charleston there is a military educational college called The Citadel, well known for its sports teams known as The Citadel Bulldogs . The most recognized of these teams is the basketball team that participates in the first division of the NCAA. In February you can watch several of their games at the McAlister Field House and get to know the best of college sports. In this pavilion you can stay acclimatized and while you take a break from the cold of the city, you can watch a quality basketball game.

10. Take a walking tour

There are many people who go to Charleston to enjoy the warmer temperatures in the month of February to be able to walk around. Coming in at No. 3 on the list of T+L readers' favorite hotels in Charleston in the 2023 World’s Best Awards, Planters Inn ranked just behind The Loutrel and just above John Rutledge House Inn. This high placement is partially due to the history of the grande dame hotel; Planters Inn has roots dating back to the 1800s, and it claims the title of the only Relais & Châteaux hotel in South Carolina. Its rank also stems from the property’s hospitable interiors and unforgettable dining experiences. The guest rooms strike that perfect balance between traditional and contemporary, with four-poster mahogany beds and working fireplaces living alongside a Nespresso machine and other must-have amenities. If you’re celebrating something special, be sure to order the famous Ultimate Coconut Cake from the Peninsula Grill — and yes, you can get it delivered via room service, too.

The rooms are extra spacious; even those traveling with multiple bags won’t feel overly cramped.

For some travelers, its prime location off of King Street will be a plus; others may find it overwhelming.

The Pinch is a 25-room property — inclusive of three furnished residences — that also features a spa, daily breakfast, and several restaurants, including The Quinte, a 40-seat oyster bar, and Lowland Tavern, a newly opened tasting room experience. While you’re certainly welcome to book a room for a night or two, accommodations are also available on a weekly or monthly basis, if desired. The rooms and restaurants are spread out across three buildings, which date back to the mid-to-late 1800s; the interior decor, however, manages to highlight that history and simultaneously bring a bit of levity and freshness to the property.

The Ryder Hotel

The hotel has ADA-accessible rooms, elevators, and an ADA pool lift.

The poolside bar-restaurant, Little Palm, can get pretty buzzy.

Jack Kerouac’s semi-fictional character Japhy Ryder, from his novel "The Dharma Bums," is the inspiration behind The Ryder Hotel , which entered the Charleston scene in the spring of 2021. The building had a previous life as the King Charles Inn, but this new chapter takes a completely new direction, with formality thrown out the window. The Ryder stands on its own two feet in the downtown area with its 91 rooms decked out in pale woods, custom-woven rugs, and plush linens. The star of the show, however, just might be the pool and its indoor-outdoor bar and restaurant, Little Palm, where tropical drinks take precedence on the menu. "The cocktails at Little Palm are some of the best — and most creative — in Charleston, and the bar is perfectly Instagrammable in shades of pink and green," says Rhodes.

The Palmetto Hotel

With breakfast taken care of each morning, you’ll have more room in your budget for dinner or shopping on King Street.

Your stay includes access to a nearby fitness center, but it’s not technically on-property.

The newest face in the Charleston hotel landscape, The Palmetto Hotel opened in the spring of 2023. Each of its 45 king-bed rooms was designed to bring guests an “elevated experience without missing the comforts of home.” This means you can expect features like high-end linens, Bamford toiletries, and cozy robes and slippers upon arrival, and you’ll get to enjoy a complimentary breakfast every morning. Before heading out for the evening, stop by the Lobby Bar for signature cocktails and light bites; you’ll even find local favorite Callie’s Pimento Cheese on the menu.

Know Before You Go

• Understand the general layout of Charleston. When most people think of Charleston, they envision the Historic District’s 18th and 19th-century architecture, cobblestoned streets, and palmetto trees that give the lower part of the peninsula its memorable charm. Many of the hotels on this list are located in this part of Charleston, but the city is bigger and more spread out than you might think. Before making a hotel reservation, pull up your Google Maps and make sure you’ll be in an area conducive to your planned itinerary. 
• Check the calendar to avoid peak weekends. Charleston experiences tourism all year round, but there are a few periods each year that see more activity, thus increasing demand for hotel rooms. Major events like Charleston Wine + Food , SEWE , Spoleto Festival USA , and College of Charleston’s graduation weekend significantly boost the number of visitors exploring the downtown area.
• Consider the amenities of each property. In order to stand out from the competition, most Charleston hotels offer some sort of special amenity, be it complimentary beach cruisers, a personal butler service, morning coffee, or a rooftop pool. If you’re deciding between two or three properties with similar locations and nightly rates, let the amenities be the deciding factor.
