The once small town of Arusha has grown to a city of 400,000 people on the strength of its strategic location, near many of Tanzania’s (and to some degree, Kenya’s) finest attractions. The entire Arusha region has now grown to 1.5 million people.

Loaded with both legitimate guide companies and itinerant guides (some of questionable merit), Arusha is ground zero for most travelers heading off to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro or Mt. Meru, as well as safari-goers preparing for trips to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park (known for its flamingos). and Kenya’s  Masai Mara  Reserve and Mt. Kenya, among other destinations.

Safari Central

Almost everyone ends up spending a day or night in Arusha either before or after their  safari , or both, so -- while it might not otherwise be a prime destination by itself -- Arusha has seen a multiplying of accommodations (both of hotels in the city as well as luxurious lodges and camps on the outskirts), eating places (try the Indian food) and attractions of its own. The climate tends to be pleasant due to its elevation on the slopes of Mt. Meru.

Nearby National Park

The nearest safari destination to Arusha, Arusha National Park, is just 45 minutes northeast by car, and protects parts of Mt. Meru, the 15,000-foot peak that rises behind the city. This attractive park of forests and lakes won’t make you forget the Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater for wildlife, but it does have leopards, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, flamingos, some elephants, and black-and-white colobus monkeys, which are more visible here than just about anywhere else in northern Tanzania.

A day visit to the national park might be of special interest to those who have arrived to climb Mts. Kilimanjaro or Meru and aren’t planning on taking additional wildlife safaris. You can hike around the slopes of Mt. Meru or all the way to the summit. At nearly 15,000 feet, Mt. Meru itself can serve as a three-or-four-day warm-up for a Kilimanjaro (19,000 feet-plus) climb or -- as Africa’s fifth highest peak -- as a climbing destination in itself. The two peaks are just 30 miles apart.

BEST TIME TO VISIT ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK?

During these months, animals are easier to spot as they gather around water sources. The vegetation is also thinner, which means it’s easier to see the animals and take photos.

The weather during this period is typically better, with average daytime temperatures around 21°C (70°F), dropping to around 9°C (48°F) at night.

MY EXPERIENCE ON THE ARUSHA SAFARI

After our Kilimanjaro trek , we were transferred by the Altezza Travel crew to Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge located just outside of Arusha National Park.

We spent one night here, and at around 7:30 am the morning after, our safari guide arrived at the hotel.

From the lodge, we began our journey to the entrance gate at Arusha National Park, a short 30-minute drive.

The first activity was a 1.5-hour walking safari with a guide and armed ranger around a section of the park.

We spotted countless wildlife such as warthogs, buffaloes, baboons, and giraffes to name a few, then we continued to check out the beautiful Tululusia Waterfall.

After the walking safari, we drove around the stunning Momella Lakes filled with pink flamingos, and then stopped for lunch at a picnic site overlooking Mount Meru.

We continued our Arusha National Park safari with a 2-hour game drive, spotting many more animal species and seeing some of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve seen in Africa.

Some lodges inside the park offer free Wi-Fi and most hotels in cities and towns also have Wi-Fi available for guest use.

Yet, keep in mind that you’re in a remote location and the connection might not always be strong.

WHERE TO STAY IN ARUSHA?

I personally stayed at Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge , just 30 minutes from Arusha National Park, and I can’t recommend it enough!

Features include a restaurant, an outdoor swimming pool, horses and stables, an indoor fireplace with a shared lounge, a garden terrace, and a bar.

Accommodations include a patio with garden views, a fully equipped kitchenette, free Wi-Fi, and a private bathroom with a shower.

A continental breakfast is also included every morning at Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge for all staying guests.

I can only highly recommend Steppe Dogs Adventures. From the very beginning they were very professional and efficient. We were in touch via mail and any question I would ask was answered immediately. They also took care of all my suggestions and in the end we had a safari exactly like he hoped to have. My mom and I went on Safari for seven days. We had a very good car which we only shared with our lovely driver/guide/friend Godbless Marick. He was a perfect driver so we felt safe all of the time even though die to the weather it was sometimes quite hard to drive. He also knew everything about animals (especially birds) and nature as well as historical facts about the places. The lodges/ "tents" Steppe Dogs Adventures chose for us where almost more than we had expected. We felt very comfortable and could enjoy these great experiences even better. 5 Days Tanzania Budget Safari

Amazing Safari experience I joined the 5 day safari tour and it was amazing from start to finish. Booking with Serengeti African Tours was very smooth and easy. Lucas, the owner, was very quick to respond to all my queries. Overall, everything went as planned. I booked a mixed accommodation - 2 nights in lodge & 2 nights camping. To my surprise, i was upgraded to stay at the lodge and it was excellent. It just opened and according to them, I was their second guest. I was literally the only guest during my 2 night stay and everyone was so accommodating and helpful. As for the safari tour, I was lucky to be part of an amazing group headed by our excellent driver/guide, Abu. Abu was very knowledgeable and friendly. He was able to provide good details about the safari, what to expect and he was able to answer all questions. We were also able to see the Big 5. I highly recommend Serengeti African Tours. They’re truly the best in Tanzania. They go above and beyond what is expected. I’m definitely booking another tour with them next time I visit.

After a Kili climb we went on Safari. The arrangements at the lodges and the experience of our guide, Peter, made the trip memorable and unforgettable. We recommend using Oneseed for Safari and letting them take care of all of the plans from a hot air balloon ride to birthday celebration. It was a wonderful experience all the way around. We so treasure the trip and seeing the animals in their natural environment.

We had an amazing 7 day safari with Arusha Trips, organised by Lex. Everything was arranged smoothly. We didn’t have to worry about anything but what to eat for dinner. Perfect!

Our first morning we got up really early and drove to Tarangire. Our guide Kepha was very enthousiast and shared all kinds of stories about trees, birds and wildlife. In Serengeti we encountered the great migration and followed them around for our time in the park. We even saw a group of hyena’s chase after a wildebeest, and we were right in the middle of it! This was one of the highlights of our safari.

After Serengeti we visited Ngorongoro. Such an amazing experience to stand in a crater that large! I highly recommend visiting there as well.

We made a last-minute trip with Arusha Trips and they have really exceeded our expectations! After a long phone call they created the trip we wanted, called lodges to check for availability and suggested similar options where it was full.

We just got back from our safari! Before our holiday, Lex kept us up to date with what was happening in Tanzania and sent us a lot of useful information to prepare us for the big day.

Once arrived at the airport, our guide was waiting for us in uniform, with a sign with our name on it. He took us to our lodge where we received a warm welcome. Here the manager, Clinton, was waiting to inform us of our trip.

The safari was the absolute highlight of our trip and the other activities such as a visit to the hot springs were simply unforgettable! Our guide, Kepha is just amazing, truly a golden guy. He was very professional and seemed to know exactly where certain animals would be before anyone else did. He has knowledge of every aspect of Tanzania down to the smallest details!

We truly had a fantastic safari! Tanzania has breathtaking national parks and an abundance of wildlife. We had a knowledgable guide, superb accommodations and some amazing close-encounters with all of the members of the big five!

Camping in the Serengeti and hearing the sounds of hyena’s closeby at night was surely one of the highlights of our holiday! The Hadzabe tribe is also worth visiting. It’s really interesting to see how these people live and survive like our ancestors did.

We had a fantastic holiday. I had never seen such nature before! The safari was very exciting and we saw many, many animals. 

We ended our safari in Zanzibar, which was the perfect place to relax after a our intense safari program. On Zanzibar we mostly slept and drank cocktails on the most beautiful beaches, but we did some snorkling and a few boat trips as well. We can also highly recommend going on a D’How boat sunset tour. O and don’t forget to eat some of the great seafood there!
