Paris and the Seine on board AmaLyra

Among the many European rivers, the Seine undoubtedly holds an unmatched charm, especially due to its close connection with Paris, a truly unique and unforgettable city. It is precisely from the Ville Lumiére that we embarked on a journey along the Seine, aboard AmaLyra, a river vessel from AmaWaterways , to discover the allure of Normandy and this enchanting river.

Embarking in Paris is undeniably one of the highlights of a river cruise on the Seine. It’s impossible to pass through the French capital without planning at least a few days of stay before or after the cruise. There are certainly many iconic landmarks to visit, and it’s delightful to stroll through the boulevards, get lost in Montmartre, and enjoy an aperitif on the elegant Rue de Rivoli. AmaLyra awaits embarking guests not far from the Eiffel Tower, on a tranquil bank of the Seine, well served by the subway. It’s an excellent starting point for exploring the city while always having your own cabin on the river.

Ama Lyra

Ama Lyra Paris

Leaving Paris at twilight is another very emotional moment. As AmaLyra maneuvers to start the cruise’s first navigation, the houses and palaces begin to glide swiftly from one bridge to the next until leaving the urban center and venturing into the darker and quieter countryside.

Our itinerary takes us all the way from Paris to the sea, then back to the capital, offering a final overnight stay. The first port of call on the cruise, the next day, is the tranquil town of Les Andelys, nestled in a bend of the Seine, with a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere. Overseeing the entire region from above is Château Gaillard, which we decide to reach with a not too strenuous walk. The charm of the castle and the view of the river and the town are more than enough to reward any effort made to reach it. In the afternoon, we set sail for Le Havre, enjoying beautiful landscapes and towns passing by slowly from the cabin’s window or the upper outdoor deck.

Ama Lyra

AmaWaterways offers interesting excursions to the Normandy landing beaches, with full-day visits to the most iconic sites of this crucial episode of World War II. We chose the tranquility of Honfleur, a small jewel in Normandy. The inner harbor, half-timbered houses, and old merchant buildings all seem to transport you back in time to an atmosphere of vibrancy and relaxation.

The next day, it’s time to visit the equally charming Caudebec en Caux, with its engaging Route des Abbayes and the small historic center. With the bicycles provided by AmaLyra , we head out to visit the incredible Abbey of Saint-Wandrille de Fontenelle, which breathes its challenging yet intriguing past. In the afternoon, we depart for Rouen, where an overnight stay is planned, another city with an unparalleled charm overlooking the Seine. Here, the Cathedral and other city churches take us back to medieval beauty, with narrow streets and ancient buildings. The story of Joan of Arc envelops the entire city, reminding us that it was indeed the birthplace of this historical heroine.

AmaLyra Destination

AmaLyra Destination

AmaLyra Destination

Vernon , another town with a majestic cathedral, is the final port of call before returning to Paris . We reach it in the early afternoon after a brief rain shower. Château Bizy, which we reach by bicycle, is a prestigious residence that stands on the hill just above the town, famous for its splendid gardens. On the other side of the river, we can’t miss Giverny, a village famous for Monet’s residence. Here, we visit his house, where he lived and created many of his works, and the enchanting gardens, meticulously maintained, which greatly inspired the painter with their perfection and various varieties of vegetation.

Returning to Paris on the penultimate day of the cruise provides an opportunity to enjoy a full day in the French capital, revisiting your favorite places or discovering new ones. AmaWaterways offers an excellent opportunity to have more time to explore Paris while having the ship at your disposal.

AmaLyra Destination

AmaLyra has 71 cabins that can accommodate up to 144 passengers, spread across three decks. The ship’s entrance is on the Violin Deck, where you’ll find the Reception and the Gift Shop. With a few steps, you can reach the small library and the Cruise Director and Hotel Manager’s stations, often available to guests. On the same deck, at the bow, is the Main Lounge & Bar , the main entertainment area on the ship. Here, you can also enjoy a more informal breakfast in the morning, and sometimes a quick and simple lunch for those who don’t want to go to the restaurant. In the evening, it’s the place for aperitifs or drinks with musical entertainment, sometimes featuring local artists who offer traditional performances from the visited ports. A continuously open station provides coffee and other hot beverages to guests.

The onboard dining options include, in addition to the Lounge’s “ Bistro ” formulas, the main restaurant located on the Cello Deck and The Chef’s Table Restaurant at the far stern of the Violin Deck, with a beautiful view of the ship’s aft. The latter is free by reservation and includes a series of dishes prepared on display by the chef.

Aboard AmaLyra , you’ll also find a Fitness Room with a small sauna and a Beauty Salon with a massage room. On the upper deck, the Sun Deck, you can walk or jog while enjoying the surrounding landscape. Here, you’ll also find the typical chessboard for a friendly game, sun loungers, and some tables for enjoying beautiful days while cruising or returning from an excursion. In the area near the command deck, there are comfortable sofas. The fore area, accessible from the Lounge, offers some small tables and is the ideal place to watch the ship enter the locks while sipping on a coffee.

Ama Lyra Fitness Room

Ama Lyra

A river cruise is truly the best way to explore regions like that of the Seine . The river’s charm blends seamlessly with the ship’s leisurely navigation, and the well-planned, often long stops allow you to organize excursions to the most interesting destinations in the region. At the same time, the ship always docks in central areas of cities, offering the convenience of reaching the city center with just a few steps.

Ama Lyra

Paris certainly added value to the itinerary, but cruising on the river and stopping in so many small towns was an equally fascinating experience that certainly encourages exploring new rivers and regions. AmaWaterways , with its extensive fleet and a choice of itineraries around the world, certainly leaves you spoiled for choice.

A total of 55 boats made Monday's journey from Pont d'Austerlitz to Pont d'Iéna, a stone's throw from the Eiffel Tower. PARIS (AP) — Curious onlookers gathered on bridges as dozens of boats snaked along the Seine river on Monday in a rehearsal for the Paris Olympics’ unique opening ceremony next month.

A total of 55 boats made the journey from Pont d’Austerlitz, named after a French military victory in 1805, to Pont d’Iéna, a stone’s throw from the Eiffel Tower, the nation’s most striking and best known landmark.

Officials are confident that the near four-hour ceremony will run like clockwork on July 26.

“Six months ago we had like 10 minutes delay on the timing and today we are very close, almost to the second to our targets,” Thierry Reboul, the executive director for ceremonies said. “So it is very satisfying. We’ve respected an extremely precise level of timing.”

On the day of the eagerly-awaited event, around 200 Olympic delegations will join the parade on more than 80 boats. They will make the journey from east to west, along a six-kilometer (3.7-mile) route which has become a major talking point — for its audacity as a unique open-air event and for its exposure to potential danger.

Security concerns led French President Emmanuel Macron to say in mid-April that the ceremony could shift to Stade de France if the threat level was too high. But Reboul said Monday that authorities are preparing for the big day as originally planned, with no alternatives being prepared at this stage.

There will be a final rehearsal, involving the full armada of boats, before the opening ceremony — one which is expected to bring 100 world leaders to the city’s embankments, where more than 300,000 people will watch.

“We will give our heart and souls to make it a great success for the French people,” France’s Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra said Monday. “They deserve it.”

The rehearsal saw 10 police speedboats shadowing the convoy, as well as speedboats equipped with television cameras. There were armed police officers stationed at various points along the way. The boats crossed 16 bridges, passing by iconic landmarks such as the green-tinged Grand Palais — where fencing and Taekwondo events will be held.

On each bridge, a few dozen people watched attentively.

“Fifty-five? That’s a lot of boats,” said 49-year-old Rosa Gabriel. Taking a break between walking from the Louvre and Notre Dame Cathedral, she watched it from the Pont des Arts bridge — fondly known as Love Lock Bridge, with its thousands of personalized locks attached to the railings.

One tourist even mistook the scene for something else.

“Maybe they are making a movie,” said Driss El Kaoutari, a 42-year-old from Morocco who was on vacation in Paris with his daughter.

What people actually saw were empty vessels bobbing slowly by. But they will be full of life, color, sound and movement next month.

“You will have many delegation members on the boats with their uniforms and their flags,” Reboul said. “Around them there will be many other things, as you can imagine.”

The water itself has become a sensitive and thorny topic for the organizers and politicians heading into the July 26-Aug. 11 Paris Games . A whopping $1.5 billion investment has already been made to improve the Seine’s water quality, with Macron and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo both promising to take a dip .

This time, it was Oudéa-Castéra’s turn to give assurances about the river — where marathon swimmers and triathletes are set to compete during the Olympics.

She bristled a little when answering.

“Regarding the quality of the Seine’s water, we are confident. You shouldn’t ask us to be ready ahead of time,” Oudéa-Castéra said, adding that a new center for collecting waste will be opened next week.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg says a record more than 20 NATO member nations are hitting the Western military alliance’s defense spending target this year as Russia’s war in Ukraine has raised the threat of expanding conflict in Europe. Stoltenberg made the announcement Monday during a talk at the Wilson Center in Washington before meeting with President Joe Biden later at the White House. The estimated figure is a nearly fourfold increase from 2021 in the number of the 32 NATO members meeting the alliance’s defense spending guideline. NATO allies agreed last year to spend at least 2% of their gross domestic product on defense. Stoltenberg’s visit comes ahead of a NATO leaders summit in Washington next month.

North Korean state media says Russian President Vladimir Putin will arrive in the country on Tuesday for a two-day visit. Putin's first trip to the country in 24 years comes amid international concerns about the two countries' expanding military cooperation. Putin is expected to meet the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for talks as they deepen their alignment in the face of separate, intensifying confrontations with Washington. North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency said Putin will visit the North on Tuesday and Wednesday at the invitation of Kim. North Korean state media didn’t immediately provide more details. Russia confirmed the visit in a simultaneous announcement. Putin also will visit Vietnam.

Dozens of boats cruise the Seine river in a rehearsal for the Paris Olympics' opening ceremony

C urious onlookers gathered on bridges as dozens of boats snaked along the Seine river on Monday in a rehearsal for the Paris Olympics' unique opening ceremony next month.

A total of 55 boats made the journey from Pont d'Austerlitz, named after a French military victory in 1805, to Pont d'Iéna, a stone's throw from the Eiffel Tower, the nation's most striking and best-known landmark.

Officials are confident that the nearly four-hour ceremony will run like clockwork on July 26.

"Six months ago we had like 10 minutes delay on the timing and today we are very close, almost to the second to our targets," Thierry Reboul, the executive director for ceremonies said. "So it is very satisfying. We've respected an extremely precise level of timing."

There will be a final rehearsal, involving the full armada of boats, before the opening ceremony — one which is expected to bring 100 world leaders to the city's embankments, where more than 300,000 people will watch.

"We will give our heart and souls to make it a great success for the French people," France's Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra said Monday. "They deserve it."
