Air Supply celebrates 40 years of hits with tour featuring Greensburg stop

air supply tour band members

GREENSBURG — Air Supply? You mean that band that sings about life-affirming and heart-breaking love?

With so many lushly orchestrated, emotional songs keen on tugging heartstrings, should we still be describing Air Supply's music as "soft rock?"

"That soft-rock idiom is a real misnomer," Air Supply guitarist and lyricist Graham Russell says. "If you've seen us in concert, you know we're serious, and loud and rock and roll.

"The songs are very powerful and epic and have strings and this whole thing going on. When you hear one of our songs, turn it up, and it's pretty powerful," Russell said. "If someone thinks we're soft rock, they need to come to one of our shows. If they want us to be soft they'll be disappointed."

You can accept that challenge, assuming you snag a ticket in time for Air Supply's 2021 tour that includes an Aug. 7 date at the Palace Theater in Greensburg. Tickets are $49.75 to $79.75  at thepalacetheatre.org/

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Sidelined last year, like the rest of the concert industry, by coronavirus closures, Air Supply belatedly will celebrate 40 years of hit making, including radio staples "Lost In Love," "All Out of Love," "The One That You Love" and "Every Woman in The World".

Except for the Jim Steinman-penned "Making Love Out of Nothing at All," Air Supply's hits were written by Graham Russell. Fellow Aussie Russell Hitchcock sings the songs in his towering tenor voice.

(Yes, one co-founder's first name is Russell; the other's last name is Russell.)

Together as a duo since the late 1970s, Russell and Hitchcock say they've never had an argument.

Not even a squabble over something as mundane as where they should eat lunch.

"I know it's weird," Russell said." I think it's because we're two different kinds of people. I'm a songwriter who plays guitar and sings. Russell is not a songwriter. He just wants to sing, and he's one of the greatest of our generation to do it. So we're the perfect marriage of two people in a band. And we don't live near each other. Russell lives in California, I live in Utah. We don't see each other except when it's time to go on tour and then we're all fired up to get back out there, especially after COVID. So there's no competition between us, and egos don't get in the way."

Russell has lived in the Utah mountains for many years, enjoying the natural serenity.

"The Utah mountains are intoxicating. It's a lovely place. I do miss those mountains when I'm on the road, the height and the grandeur.

"But I'm very excited to be back on tour. It seems like things are coming back to normal."

Air Supply won't come out of the gate slowly, "but we do need to get our mojo back. We've been in rehearsals," Russell said last week in a phone interview.

Tour dates will find Russell and Hitchcock backed by a four-piece band.

"They're permanent members. Some have been with us for many, many years. It's a top-class band. We're looking forward to seeing everyone in the audience singing, laughing, crying.

"People always ask: 'Are you fed up playing these same songs for so many years?' We're really not. Because the audience loves these songs as much as we do. They're such classic songs and it's a privilege to sing them, and see the audience's faces lighting up, which is quite strange because these songs are up to 40 years old, but still sound fresh," Russell said. "Plus we keep getting new fans. Some bring their grandchildren and they've become big fans. There's a great reaction every night."

At every tour stop. Air Supply does one or sometimes two meet-and-greets with fans.

(The Lost in Love VIP Experience at the Palace show for $159 includes a reserved seat in the first 12 rows, invitation to the soundcheck with meet & greet and photo opps to follow.)

At those backstage gatherings, fans often relay how a particular Air Supply song helped them make up or break up with a romantic partner.

"That inspires us to keep writing songs," Russell said.

One fan insisted on having an Air Supply video playing in her birthing room as she gave birth to her baby, " which was really cool, and reflects what these songs mean to everybody," Russell said.

In January 2020 the Herald Sun in Sydney, Australia, proclaimed Air Supply in the Top 5 of Greatest Aussie Bands of All Time, behind AC/DC, the Bee Gees, INXS and the Seekers.

"Top-5 is a great honor. There are a lot of bands from Australia. We used to play pubs and not the most desirable venues with three or four other bands including AC/DC and INXS when those bands came up through the ranks," Russell said.

You mean you could have walked into an Australian club one night and witnessed Air Supply with AC/DC and INXS all on the bill?

"Many, many times at many venues," Russell said.

That posed some daunting challenges, especially with fervent AC/DC fans in the house.

"They'd see us singing our epic ballads and boo us off the stage — well, no, they'd actually throw beer bottles at us. But we persisted and became good friends with the other bands. And that's how you learn your craft. We knuckled under and got in the trenches and learned to rock and roll.

"Those early years were tough," Russell said. "We shared rooms in terrible hotels. But we never gave up and our perseverance paid off."

Russell admits he's a little surprised Men at Work or Little River Band missed out on the top-five.

"I'll be seeing Little River Band on Friday. We're very good friends."

Russell and Hitchcock were instant friends the day they met on May 12, 1975, the first day of rehearsals for “Jesus Christ Superstar” in Sydney. They instantly bonded over their love for The Beatles.

When "Jesus Christ Superstar" performances finished around 10:30 p.m., they would hustle to find any pizza parlors or nightclubs where they could perform with just one guitar and two voices.

Their stirring harmonies and Russell's emotional originals sparked a buzz, though many big labels rejected their demo cassette except CBS Records, which in 1976 recorded Air Supply's debut single, "Love and Other Bruises," which quickly raced toward the top of the Australian pop charts.

Months later, Air Supply hit the road in support of Rod Stewart across Australia and throughout North America, where they found new fans but did not dent the U.S. singles charts.

Their sophomore record included “Lost in Love” which went Top 10 in Australia and found its way to music industry executive Clive Davis in New York, who quickly signed  Air Supply to Arista Records. In 1980, “Lost in Love” became the fastest-selling single in the world, leaping to No. 3 on Billboard, soon followed by the duo's “All Out of Love,” which stayed in the No. 2 spot for four weeks (fended off from No. 1 first by Diana Ross' "Upside Down" then Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust.")

Air Supply would perform for an Australian bicentennial crowd including Prince Charles and Princess Diana (both fans), and 175,000 concertgoers in Cuba.

The concert formula remained the same: Hitchcock’s soaring voice and Russell’s simple yet stately songs.

Russell doesn't go out of his way to write intensely sentimental songs.

"Since I was 11 years old I've been writing songs and they were always very emotional, and that's a result of me having a very emotional upbringing," said Russell, whose mother died when he was a child.

"I've honed that skill over the years and gotten quite good at it. I spend several hours a day working on songs. It's just a part of me. I never lost that desire. Some people are born to be great mechanics or great lawyers or doctors."

Airheads celebrate his songwriting skills. That's the name of the band's ardent fan club.

"That's what we're all about, singing beautiful songs for beautiful people every night. It's a lovefest. What a way to make a living."

At each show, Air Supply plays a brand new song — a longstanding wish of Graham Russell's.

"We call that the G-spot, don't you know. It's my little place where I can try a song out. So it's fun for me to experiment with a new work in progress.

"But even 'All Out of Love' is a great thrill for me," he said. "It's one of the most successful songs I've written and I get to sing it every night. That song helped afford me the lifestyle I love where I get to meet so many great people traveling the world, and live in the mountains and look up at the stars at night."

No bucket list goals left for this band.

"Our goal is just to keep on playing," Russell said. "We love to walk onto the stage and seeing the audience. Performing makes us very happy."

I saw Air Supply in Morristown, New Jersey on February 29, 2020. I have always been a huge fan but this was the first time I saw them live. Excellent Show! Russell Hitchcock and Graham Russell were on par with their voices. They both sound exactly like my 1983 greatest hits tape! Just wonderful! I am looking forward to seeing them again!

I really enjoyed the show. This is my second time watching it. It brings back memories. And it reminds me that, love is the greatest part of life and we must learn how to forgive no matter what the situation you’re in. It’s the hardest thing to do as a human, and that we should remember that God is love. Which reminds me of John 3:16, of the New Testament in the Bible.

The guys were great but the sound was terrible. It sounded like a speaker was faulty. I saw them at the Palais , that was much better. Also ,the security on the night with their nuclear powered flash lights warning anyone holding up their camera phones caught anyone withing a 55

Metre radius in the beam which was really distracting

Air Supply Is Awesome In Evans

by MRM  •  July 12, 2023

July 8, 2023

Columbia County Performing Arts Center

Review by Joseph Hett

Air Supply brought The Lost in Love Experience Tour to the Columbia County Performing Arts Center in Evans, GA on Saturday night. Airheads made their way into the PAC to escape the heat outside as the temperature was approaching 100 degrees.

Right on time, Aaron McLain (lead guitar/musical director), Mirko Tessandori (keyboards), Pavel Valdman (drums) and Doug Gild (bass) made their way out onstage to crank out a loud intro for the gentlemen of the hour. Graham Russell (guitar/vocals) and Russell Hitchcock (lead vocals) then made their way out for “Sweet Dreams.”

air supply tour band members

The capacity crowd became electric when the first notes were heard for “Even the Nights Are Better.” The Airheads immediately began singing along – and that would become a common theme throughout the evening. Air Supply kept the classics coming with “Just as I Am,” “Every Woman in the World” and “Here I Am.”

Russell stated that “Tonight is our 5,327th show of our career, but tonight will be the best show ever. We are yours…in return you are ours,” before they slowed it down with “Chances,” “Goodbye” and “I Can Wait Forever.”

At this point in the show, Hitchcock and the rest of the band exited the stage for a well deserved break except for Russell. After asking the audience who all hasn’t seen Air Supply in concert before, Russell quipped why it took them 48 years to do so. “We just got back from doing five shows in Honolulu and we thought it was HOT until we came here,” Russell jokingly said. Russell noted that Hitchcock was backstage having tea so he could come back and sing even higher than before.

Russell then went on to recite a short poem titled “Am I” from his book “Turn Left at Greenland.” Tessandori then came out to play keyboards on “I’ll Find You.”

Hitchcock came back wearing a black sleeveless shirt exposing his tattoo-filled arms. Ironically, his shirt said “TATTOOS ARE STUPID.” Russell and Hitchcock both sat on stools on the center of the stage and told a few stories. They spoke about first meeting each other, similarities, early music making and opening for Rod Stewart in 1977. They then encouraged the crowd to singalong with “Two Less Lonely People in the World.”

Russell performed a unique solo on his acoustic guitar. He plucked and tapped on the strings all while banging it’s body for a percussion effect. For “The One That You Love,” Hitchcock instructed the audience to sing the chorus.

After the timeless “Lost in Love,” Valdman performed a drum solo and McLain performed a monstrous guitar solo. McLain was shredding so fast, the fog machine to his right made it look like his guitar was smoking. Throughout the evening, McLain made soloing look effortlessly.

Air Supply closed out the set with the epic “Making Love Out of Nothing at All.” After a brief break, they returned for “Without You” followed by crew and band introductions. They even gave a shout-out to military veterans in the building. To close out the show, they ended with the one and only “All Out of Love.”

Air Supply put on a marvelous show. The musicianship of all members of the band was phenomenal. It’s amazing how Hitchcock hit the high notes perfectly. While Air Supply might be typecast as a band playing sappy love songs, they truly put on a rocking show in concert. Air Supply is still at the top of their game!

Live Review: Air Supply @ MGM National Harbor — 6/3/22

Live Review: Air Supply @ MGM National Harbor — 6/3/22

I must start this review with a special appreciation for guitarist Graham Russell of Air Supply.

During Air Supply concerts, such as a recent sold-out appearance at MGM National Harbor, Graham holds centerstage while the rest of the band takes a break in the middle of the show, and he recites a poem. This time, he recited “Am I” in a clear but hushed stage whisper. It was a wonderfully theatric moment, and the audience held its collective breath as he dramatically passed through the poem of his own composition.

Graham then presented a tongue-in-cheek ode to “The Perfect Lover,” which is in fact his guitar, and sang a song of that name. The covid-era composition, recorded by Graham and some bandmates as G and the Cool Cucumbers, flowed smoothly throughout the auditorium.

Our appreciation of the tall and lean guitarist, who is critically underrated, is not meant to detract from his equally magnetic bandmate, the vocalist Russell Hitchcock, who also was in fine form at MGM National Harbor on June 3. But Graham’s comprehensive and tender grasp of guitar mechanics, his effortless rhythmic synchronizing with the band’s excellent drummer, and his extraordinary compositions leave us wondering why he doesn’t more frequently appear on the lists of top classic rock guitarists in the world.

Graham and Russell began this performance in the Lost in Love Experience Tour, celebrating more than 45 years of Air Supply, with “Sweet Dreams,” their 1982 Top 5 hit, offering both men an opportunity to sing. And while Russell’s powerful tenor was certainly a defining feature of the performance, Graham sounded quite remarkable as well!

Watch the official music video for “Sweet Dreams” by Air Supply on YouTube:

Soon after Graham’s midshow spotlight, Russell returned to the stage and the two shared the tale of how they met in Australia as cast members of Jesus Christ Superstar. Russell and Graham recognized each other’s talents immediately and began collaborating. The admiration the two men shared for each other from those early days was evident in abundance still today, and their shared confidence fueled their brotherly bond and in turn their penchant for showstopping moments.

After the recap, Russell and Graham took seats for a moving performance of “Two Less Lonely People in the World,” another USA chart success in 1983 and also a calmer moment for the often more theatric duo.  As the men sang, the audience sang along with them, bonding in the warm embrace of the lyrics. Air Supply’s skilled songsmiths sang directly to the crowd, who sang back with enthusiasm.

Of course, when you say that almost everyone inside The Theater at MGM National Harbor knew every word to every line of each Air Supply song, you at the very least can point to the example of “The One That You Love,” the USA No. 1 singalong anthem dating from 1981. You’ll never find a roomful of people more eager to sing to a tune than a gathering of Air Supply fans eager to sing “The One That You Love,” and the highly anticipated group sing was glorious, cathartic and very much a lot of fun.

Watch a 1981 performance of “The One That You Love” by Air Supply for TopPop on YouTube:

At the close of their set, Air Supply played “Making Love Out of Nothing at All,” one of the greatest pop torch songs in modern music. The sneaky 1983 power ballad began earnestly enough but soon built into the over-the-top hallmarks of its famed songwriter, Jim Steinman. Well, it may be a Steinman composition, but its undoubtedly an Air Supply tune, as no one could deliver those declarative, commanding lyrical turns of phrase like Russell, and no one could construct a foundation for the song’s musical explosion like Graham.

Those last tunes lingered in our heads as we headed home for the evening — a testament indeed to the timeless talent and musical prowess of two men who show no reason to slow down any time soon.

Thank you for the awesome review of our favorite band. We Airheads too wish more would realize the versatility of Graham’s guitar playing, after all how many guitarists play a right-handed guitar upside down to fit him. Imagine the coordination needed for that as he basically plays the chords wrong but creates a style all his own.

Truly a legend band that deserves this wonderful review. Loved them since 1984. Russell’s voice and Gs lyrics. My heart forever

Truly grateful for sharing us the remarkable stories of the music, talents and accomplishments of Graham and Russell. Congratulations to their continued success! I love you guys.
