Note: Some Departments may provide additional activities and funding, above these general guidelines, at their discretion.

  • Meals and activities on Saturday, if applicable
  • Any other personal expenses

Where will I be staying?

We have reserved hotel room blocks at The Golden Hotel and Table Mountain Inn for anyone traveling from more than 50 miles away from Golden. Please indicate on your registration form if you require lodging. Other than that, there is nothing further you need to do for lodging! You will receive your hotel details prior to your arrival in Golden .

We will not book attendees living within the greater Denver or Boulder metro areas in hotel rooms, and if you choose to book lodging in Golden it is at your own expense.

If you live greater than 50 miles from Colorado School of Mines and did not indicate you need lodging on your registration form , please let us know.

What will I be doing during my visit?

Grad Visit Days includes both casual and structured meetings with faculty and current graduate students, an overview of your program, a poster session, and optional outings/events to help you learn more about your department, research opportunities, campus and the beautiful surrounding area. The formal aspects of the visit will start with the poster session on Thursday and conclude with a dinner reception on Friday, with additional department and optional activities on Saturday.

This is a multi -department visit weekend with prospective students visiting from several graduate academic programs at Mines. Some of the programming is department-specific, and some events will include our colleagues from other Mines academic departments . We hope this will give you a chance to meet prospective peers from across campus and learn about some of the interesting interdisciplinary work happening at Mines.

Your department-specific event agenda will be posted in your Applicant Portal when it becomes available.

Is there a dress code? What else should I pack?

Most choose to dress in business casual or smart casual for the formal aspects of the visit, but please bring comfortable shoes for strolls across campus and town, and don’t feel the need to be overly dressy. It is frequently sunny and dry in Colorado, but the end of February/beginning of March can also be snowy. Also, because of the altitude, there is less protection from the sun. We recommend packing the following:

  • A reusable water bottle
  • A rain/windproof jacket, if you have one
  • Clothing that can easily be layered
  • Clothing for any optional activities, such as snowsports or hiking

Check the current and forecasted weather in Golden here .

What IS there to do if I have down time?

There are plenty of spaces around campus to relax between meetings. Additionally, the town of Golden has a number of attractions and is very walkable. Take a walk along Clear Creek or explore the many shops and restaurants on Washington Avenue. Denver is just a short ride away via ride services (Uber/Lyft, etc.) or by public transit (bus from Golden or walk/ride to the “W” train line which runs between the Jefferson County Government Center in Golden to Union Station in Denver). Easily connect to the train line via the OreCart ! For more ideas see:

  • https://www.jeffco.us/814/Open-Space

What is the best way for me to get back to the Denver International Airport?

We will provide free shuttles at scheduled times to transport you from your hotel to the airport. You are welcome to travel back to the airport on your own (at your own expense) if you prefer.

Shuttles : Super Shuttle (~$49), GoldenWest Shuttle (~$48)

Lyft/Uber: (can range significantly on vehicle and if shared: ~$35-80)

Public Transit : (~$10.50) You can take the OreCart to the W line (or a bus or Lyft/Uber) to Union Station in downtown Denver, then at Union Station, transfer to the A line to airport . If you start at the Jefferson County Government Center stop in Golden, you can select “Airport” at the ticket station and use the same ticket for both legs of the journey. If you have some extra time, Union Station is a beautiful historic building in the heart of downtown Denver and full of restaurants and shops.

What if I have other questions?

Program coordinators from your department will be in touch with you between now and your visit. Watch your email for more communication from the Graduate Admissions Office as well. For any questions not addressed here, please don’t hesitate to contact the program coordinator listed on your confirmation or Graduate Admissions at (303) 273-3247 or [email protected].

school of mines campus tour

OZ Architecture has announced the successful completion of the Beck Venture Center and the Labriola Innovation Hub, both at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden. The completion of these OZ-designed facilities will foster a unique ecosystem of innovation and entrepreneurship on the Mines campus. These buildings create opportunities for the campus community, supporting the student’s path from their first-year Cornerstone projects to their Capstone Design projects and beyond. The facilities are designed to facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration and to showcase student innovation on campus.

At the corner of 17th Street and Washington Avenue, the 31,000-square-foot Beck Venture Center connects the business and academic worlds, with collaborative office and workspace for student, alumni and faculty entrepreneurs located on the second and third stories, with more public-facing gathering and event space on the ground floor.

The Labriola Innovation Hub features specialized classrooms and state-of-the-art prototyping and fabrication labs for students to build, test and refine their ideas, as well as pursue their independent passion projects. The complex comprises the 37,000-square-foot Hub, as well as a 9,000-square-foot shop building and a 3,000-square-foot faculty office.

“The completion of the Beck Venture Center and the Labriola Innovation Hub highlights our commitment to creating spaces that inspire and empower the next generation of innovators,” said David Schafer, principal at OZ Architecture. “Our team at OZ is proud to have collaborated closely with the Colorado School of Mines to create these dynamic spaces that foster creativity, entrepreneurship and innovation through the student journey on campus.”

These facilities are poised to become essential resources for Colorado School of Mines students. Virtually every student is expected to utilize the Labriola Innovation Hub for prototyping and experimentation, and through the Mines Venture Program at the Beck Venture Center, students will gain the support to enable them to launch businesses around their ideas.

To celebrate the completion of these exciting projects, a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Labriola Innovation Hub was held in February, and a ceremony for the Beck Venture Center in early April, marking the official opening of these cutting-edge facilities and signaling a new era of creativity and collaboration for students at Colorado School of Mines.

Theatres in Moscow

Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre

This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. You can check the program and buy tickets online here http://stanmus.com/ . If you are opera lover, get a ticket to see superstar Hibla Gerzmava . The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.

The Novaya Opera

“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. You can buy tickets online here http://www.novayaopera.ru/en .

Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center

The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. You can see what is on the program here http://opera-centre.ru/theatre . Unfortunately “booking tickets online” is available in Russian only. If you need help, you can contact us at and we can book a ticket for you.

Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory

These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. You can check the program here http://meloman.ru/calendar/ . You need just to switch to English. Booking tickets online is available only for owners of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian phone numbers. If you need help, you can contact us and we can book a ticket for you.

Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)

This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. The President of MIPAC is People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Spivakov, conductor of “Virtuosy Moskvy” orchestra. You can see pictures of the concert halls here http://www.mmdm.ru/en/content/halls . The program is impressive in its variety but is not translated into English. You can contact us at and we can find a performance for you.
