  • Joel S 1 contribution 0 5.0 of 5 bubbles Absolutely perfecto! Roberta, Arianna, and Josemina were all fantastic. Roberta did an excellent job if narrating. Both Roberta and Arianna did a very polite but forceful management of the people who had a different sense of time. Lunch was delicious, though I was surprised I was the only one in the group to choose it. Josemina was a fantastic guide for Pompeii. Knowledgeable and enthusiastic, she made our two hours fly by. It was perfecto! What travelers say about their tours to the Amalfi Coast

Travel tips for amalfi trips.

Thanks to its Mediterranean climate, the region enjoys pleasant weather in the spring and fall—and these seasons are some of the best times of year to visit the Amalfi Coast. Fewer crowds mean you’ll have a more authentic experience and cooler temperatures help keep you comfortable when you’re out exploring.

July and August are the busiest times of the year for visitors, and also when summer temps are at their highest. That means perfect weather for beachgoers and a bustling social scene in Amalfi’s most popular sites like Positano. If you’re looking for a classic summer vacation and lots of nightlife activities, this is your perfect time for trips to the Amalfi Coast.

When you’re planning a trip to the Amalfi Coast, it’s good to know which must-visit sites you’ll want to see. Our Amalfi Coast tours visit the villages of Amalfi, Atrani, and Ravello, as well as cities like Naples and Sorrento. If you’re interested in taking a slower-paced vacation where you spend a lot of time outdoors, our walking tours of the Amalfi Coast are your perfect trip. That means you’ll enjoy small group tours of the Amalfi Coast, taking daily guided walks and spending time going off-the-beaten path to discover the region’s hidden gems.

However, if this is your first visit to Italy and you want to see more of the country, pick tours of the Amalfi coast that also hit Rome, Naples, and Milan to discover Italy from top to bottom.

Local eats along the Amalfi Coast, of course, include everyone’s favorite Italian fare—pizza and pasta—but there are regional specialties to keep an eye out for. Thanks to its coastal location, seafood is a popular addition to many tables. Spaghetti alle vongole , or spaghetti and clams, and spaghetti alla puttanesca with anchovies are two dishes to try. Towns around the Amalfi Coast are also famous for their buffalo-milk mozzarella cheese, as well as fresh lemons—and that means limoncello.

On all of our Amalfi Coast group tours, you’ll enjoy included meals that highlight some of the local cuisine. Plus, you can always ask your Tour Director for advice on what to eat in your free time— they know the best of the best everywhere!

The Amalfi Coast enjoys temperate Mediterranean weather in the spring and fall, when you may want to pack layers for warm afternoons and chilly nights. Remember that in the summer the weather can get very hot, so you’ll want breathable clothing as well as sun protection like a hat and sunglasses. We always recommend comfortable walking shoes for any tour—but that’s especially important if you’re traveling on walking tours of the Amalfi Coast . You may even want hiking boots, just to ensure you’ve got a good footing on rocky paths and gravel roads!

Of course, once you’ve booked one of our Amalfi Coast guided tours, you’ll receive a detailed packing list—plus all the rest of the info you need to get ready for your trip.

On a launch approaching the Amalfi Coast at the start of our tours, you face a startling sight— like oversized rock climbers, gleaming villas cling with no visible foothold to the sheer cliffs. You have to ask yourself how…why? But when you swing open the shutters in your cliffside hotel room, the jaw-dropping view is all the answer you need. Situated on the "ankle" of the Italian boot, Amalfi has a balmy climate. Orange trees line village streets. Breezy seaside footpaths around Positano encourage a nice slow pace perfect for absorbing the atmosphere. We also settle in for two mellow days on the glorious island of Capri—one of our favorite places in Italy. We make time for Pompeii, and unlike most visitors, you'll see Amalfi in the best way—in the company of an Italian friend who knows the ins and outs of life on the edge of the sea. See Sicily, too! Our Sicily tour starts the day after Amalfi ends. Pair up the two for an amazing Italian vacation. Call 800.200.3887 for details.

  • Trace ancient footsteps in Pompeii, during a private, archeologist-led exploration of the city’s excavation
  • Experience Capri as only the locals do, with two leisurely overnights in a luxurious hotel overlooking Roman emperor Tiberius’ villa and the sparkling blue sea
  • Hike to a 14th-century monastery atop Monte Solaro for Capri’s most iconic vista: the striking Faraglioni rising from the sea
  • Walk through scenic fields of terraced wildflowers past wild goats
  • Follow a centuries-old footpath with lemon trees and waterfalls then stroll through the gardens of Villa Cimbrone
  • Walk along the aptly named “Path of the Gods” trail with its stupendous coastal views
  • Visit a tiny limoncello factory to see how the local lemon liquor is made
  • From Positano, follow the coast to a pizza-making instruction overlooking the sea

Why Choose Classic Journeys

  • Experience Amalfi on foot and at eye level. Each day, join your guide on the most cinematic footpaths in the region, including parts of ‘The Path of the Gods’ to Ravello and on the flower-filled slopes known only to locals on Capri.
  • Exceptional full-time local guides who become your well-connected friend. Our amazing guides are with you throughout each day of the tour, sharing their lifelong connections as well as engaging anecdotes about the history and culture of the Amalfi Coast and Capri.
  • Small groups that provide you unrivaled access. An average of 10 guests per departure means we can offer you ‘only with Classic Journeys’ access to experiences like a private cooking instruction at a family estate on the Sorrentine Peninsula, a visit to Pompeii with an archaeologist, and a private boat exploration along Amalfi Coast.
  • Award-winning hotels are waiting for you at the end of every day. Luxuriate in the finest and most distinctive accommodations. Our decades-long relationships mean you get ‘only with Classic Journeys’ overnights in both Positano and Capri.
  • Eat like (and with) the locals. Food is a foolproof way into the hearts, homes and history of the places you visit with us. From a cooking instruction and limoncello making with a family on their estate, to coveted local restaurants along the Amalfi Coast, our meals offer you opportunities to explore native food traditions and fine dining.
  • Handcrafted itineraries with all activities included. With our long-term friendships, we know the Amalfi Coast and Capri more personally than anyone else. So you get thoughtfully curated itineraries that combine explorations of the villages, organic farms, archeological sites and the people who know them best.
  • Regenerative Travel that supports the history, culture, people and places you’re visiting with us along the Amalfi Coast. We put our local currency into the pockets of the people who live here. It’s your guarantee that you’ll have authentic, up-close experiences on your trip. Best of all, our person-to-person approach helps sustain their ways of life.

16 tips for planning your trip to the Amalfi Coast

Helena Smith

Positano beach, Amalfi coast, Italy

Italy's Amalfi Coast lures visitors from around the world © MNStudio / Shutterstock

The vertiginous and craggy Amalfi Coast and its three island outposts of Capri, Ischia and Procida have been a magnet for visitors since Roman times.

Hemmed in by high mountains, the coastal towns on this seafront stretch are physically unspoiled, and they retain an evergreen appeal despite the inevitable tour groups. If you avoid high summer, when visitors arrive in peak numbers, a trip here will be a scenic, artistic and culinary delight.

From where to visit and when to enjoy the best weather to how to get around, here’s all you need to know as you plan your fantasy trip to the Amalfi Coast.

Best places to visit on the Amalfi Coast

Feel the timeless pull of sorrento.

A small resort with a big reputation, Sorrento is a town of lemons, high-pedigree hotels and plunging cliffs that cut through the heart of its historical core. Tourism has a long history here: Sorrento was a compulsory stop on the 19th-century “Grand Tour,” interest in the town having first been sparked by the poet Byron. A long line of vacationing literary geniuses followed in his footsteps to take the warm Sorrentine air. The romance still persists.

Morning view of Positano, Amalfi Coast, Italy

Savor the photogenic drama of Positano

Dramatic, deluxe and more than a little dashing, Positano is the Amalfi Coast’s front-cover splash, with vertiginous houses tumbling down to the sea in a cascade of sun-bleached peach, pink and terracotta. No less photo-worthy are its steep streets and steps, flanked by wisteria-draped hotels, smart restaurants and fashionable retailers.

Visit Capri for timeless and beautiful luxury

Capri is beautiful – seriously beautiful. Steep cliffs rise majestically from an impossibly blue sea; elegant villas drip with wisteria and bougainvillea; and even the trees seem to be carefully manicured. Long a preserve of celebrities and the super-rich, this small, precipitous island off the west end of the Sorrento Peninsula has a tangibly deluxe feel.

Postcard view of the famous Amalfi Coast from Ravello, Italy

Enjoy some of Europe’s best hotels at Ravello

A hilltop garden paradise, Ravello is famous for its music festival and incomparably swish hotels. Founded in the 5th century as a sanctuary from barbarian invaders fresh from sacking Rome, this lofty Amalfi town was built, in contrast to other Amalfi settlements, at the top of a hill rather than down on the coast. It’s second only to Positano in its style and glamour.

Painted wall in Pompeii, which was destroyed in 79 AD by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius

Get a taste of ancient life at Pompeii

The ruins of Pompeii are a veritable time machine, hurling visitors back to the time of emperors and Latin chatter. Here, time remains paused at 79 CE, the city's frescoed homes, businesses and baths still waiting for their occupants to return. Few archaeological sites offer such an intimate connection to the past, and few are as deeply haunting and evocative.

When to go to the Amalfi Coast

On the Amalfi Coast (as everywhere), picking the perfect time to visit makes any trip better. Here’s a seasonal breakdown of what it’s like to visit the Amalfi Coast in each season.

Expect wildflowers and fewer crowds in spring

Spring is wonderful in this region, as swaths of bright wildflowers dot the landscape. June generally delivers summer heat without the August crowds and traffic.

Summer is peak season for culture – and crowds

This is a great time for cultural events, but high summer sees narrow coastal roads clogged, soaring temperatures and the occasional frayed temper. It’s best to avoid July and August, which is the month that many Italians take for their annual vacations.

Consider fall for optimal hiking and swimming

You can find decent deals on accommodations in fall after school starts and many people are back to work. It’s a great time for hiking and swimming, as the weather and water remain pleasantly temperate. Bountiful seasonal produce includes mushrooms, black truffles and chestnuts.

Things get sleepy come winter

Many hotels, restaurants and attractions are firmly closed from November until Easter. Boat and ferry services are limited.

When is the best time to go to Italy?

People on the beach at Positano on the Amalfi Coast, Italy

Where to stay on the Amalfi Coast

The Italian region of Campania has been looking after visitors for centuries. Competition is fierce, and standards of service are high. Whether you’re honeymooning or backpacking, you’re likely to find a warm welcome, enhanced by a room decked out with local tiles and maybe even a lush garden.

With five days, you can take in the highlights of the Amalfi Coast. Consider a night or two on the volcanic garden island of Ischia , then spending the rest of your time at one of the coastal gems – Sorrento, Positano or Amalfi – with day trips to explore the splendors of Pompeii, Ravello’s gardens and some mountain scenery. At any time of year, it’s best to book ahead; bear in mind that demand for rooms is sky high in the summer.

The region does high-end tourism like nowhere else. Some of our favorite posh accommodation options include the venerable Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria in Sorrento and Capri’s opulent Grand Hotel Quisisana . Midrange B&Bs also excel: we’ve happily laid our heads at Casa Giovanni da Procida , La Fenice in Positano and hillside Ercole di Amalfi . There are some great hostel and camping options too: try Positano’s Hostel Brikette or beachside Camping Mirage on Ischia.

Boat in the water on the Amalfi Coast, Italy

Best things to do on the Amalfi Coast

Nothing beats renting a boat.

Nothing makes you feel more like a millionaire than having your own boat, even if it’s just for a couple of hours. Try Banana Sport if you’d like to make a sea circuit of Capri.

Go swimming in the azure Mediterranean

From Ischia’s thermal beaches to Positano’s Spiaggia di Fornillo, the Amalfi Coast is perfect for water babies. Just be careful how deep you dip your toes into the hot spring at Baia di Sorgeto  – the water is thermally heated.

Hikers on the Sentiero Degli Dei (Path of the Gods) on the Amalfi Coast, Italy

Walk the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei)

You need strong legs and a head for heights to walk the legendary Path of the Gods , which offers dizzying sea views.

Feast on just-caught seafood

You’ll find spaghetti alle vongole (with fresh clams) on practically every menu in the region. Another seafood special is tuna, best eaten in Cetara , which hosts an annual tuna festival.

How to get to and around the Amalfi Coast

While most visitors fly into Naples , taking an overnight train is a romantic and eco-friendly alternative from many European cities.

Driving through the region can be a hectic experience. It’s best to get around by public transport or hiring a driver –  unless you have a penchant for zigzag bends, cavalier passing and buses swinging at you from the opposite direction.  A network of ferries connects the coastal towns along the Amalfi Coast with Salerno, Sorrento and Capri. Connections to Naples, Ischia and Procida can be made via Sorrento or Capri.

The Circumvesuviana train line connects Naples with Herculaneum, Pompeii and Sorrento – it’s scruffy but fairly efficient and extremely cheap. As an alternative, take the Campania Express train. It is a bit more expensive and runs less frequently, but as it stops only in Naples, Herculaneum, Pompeii and Sorrento it makes for a much more pleasant journey. Nipping up and down the coast, circling Ischia and linking Capri’s towns, buses are a bargain – although some travelers might find the local driving style and crowds a little hard to stomach.

Where You'll Stay

Operated by italy with pleasure.

Italy With Pleasure emerged from a marriage of ideas (the traditional marriage came later). To explain, we need to wind the clock back to the time when the founders of the company, Antonella and Malcolm, were embarking on what became Italy With Pleasure. Malcolm was working as a winemaker in Puglia, southern Italy. Discovering new flavours, but more significantly the depth of history and culture all around. Nearby was Antonella, studying for a masters in literature. Together we embarked on an exploration of firstly Puglia, where we were living, and later further afield around the many and varied regions of Italy. Everywhere we went we would seek out the local cuisine, traditions tied to the land, places off the beaten track. We’d always try to find the essence of what made each place unique, maybe it was a local artisan, maybe it was part of an ancient Roman road; it could be the particular way they make their pasta shapes in their village. And what were our own travels in Italy are now the tours that we offer to you - Italy With Pleasure was founded specifically for this purpose. We collaborate with a group of likeminded individuals who are our Tour Leaders - Andy and Anita, Richie and Roberta - who will lead your group for the week and provide insights into this land. Our guiding philosophy in designing the tour itineraries is to do so with the care we would in planning a personal trip with a close friend. We've maintained the spirit of those early days, almost 20 years ago now, back when we were driving around Italy with hands stained from the intense primitivo wine being made back in the winery. We invite you to come and uncover some of these special places for yourselves. With pleasure, of course.

During your visit in Ravello you have the choice between two activities offering spectacular views over the Amalfi Coast. Your first choice is to visit the cliffhanging Romantic gardens of Villa Rufolo, known also as the "Garden of the Soul" and credited with inspiring the great German composer Richard Wagner. Your second choice is to challenge yourself on a hike to the remote Villa Cimbrone.* Located on a rocky outcrop below the village of Ravello, these Mediterranean gardens were a favourite haunt of the likes of Virginia Woolf, E. M. Forster, D. H. Lawrence, T. S. Eliot, Gore Vidal, Humphrey Bogart and Greta Garbo.

Leave the town of Lecce behind and journey through Salento’s wine country. Pass rows of vines and olive groves until you reach Otranto. Nestled in Puglia’s easternmost corner, this quaint seaside town unveils a rich history: Greek, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, Spaniards, French all vied for control of this strategic port – Italy’s gateway to the Levant and the Holy Land. The city’s Aragonese Castle inspired Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto (1764), recognized as the first Gothic novel. Soak in the mysterious atmosphere during a guided walking tour of Otranto’s treasures: the fortified walls, the mosaic-rich churches, the sudden views over the Mediterranean Sea. Your day continues at a local winery, featuring a tasting of Salice Salentino wine. This intense and full-bodied wine comes from the region’s dark-purple grapes wine, known by the locals as “negroamaro” (which translates to "black-bitter"). Learn about the traditional techniques and productions as you sample the wine, followed by a delicious lunch.

Venture through Naples' historic city center (UNESCO) overflowing with local life and eccentric monuments.

Explore a sfusato lemon grove and hike the Amalfi Coast's ancient Path of Lemons.

Make your way through Lecce's city center with a multi-stop dinner.

Natural beauty and fascinating history will captivate you during your customizable 10-day Italy tour from Cinque Terre to the Amalfi Coast, revealing prestige, wealth, artistry, and remarkable heritage that dates back thousands of years. Whether settling into the luxuries of elite palaces or traversing terraced gardens on a rugged cliff, you will be immersed in the cultures by the sea and the opulence of the past.

Customizable Itinerary

Genoa – arrive in genoa with an introductory tour of the city.

The power and prestige of the Republic of Genoa date back to the 13th century after defeating Pisa for supremacy along the Western shores of the Italian Peninsula. This influence is showcased by the grand palaces, elegant fountains, and preserved waterfront. The Old Harbor offers a sense of the city during its height of power with narrow, winding lanes and ships that pass along the water at all hours of the day. Your private transfer will greet you upon your arrival at the Cristoforo Colombo Airport and escort you into the heart of Genoa to settle into the comforts of your luxurious accommodation. Your guide will meet you in the hotel lobby and will be eager to introduce you to the charms of the port city, ranging from the atmospheric cafes along the portside esplanade to the glitzy, gold-leaf halls of the Palazzi dei Rolli.

You can take your time examining Porta Soprana, as the preserved towers of the 12th-century city gates are connected to the childhood home of Cristopher Columbus. The small museum embodies a wide breadth of history that eventually affected the evolution of the Western and Modern worlds. In the small neighborhood of Boccadasse, the picturesque homes encompass the older, functional homes of the former fishing village with bright colors that have been painted across the facades. The small beach that hugs the city is also decorated with moored fishing boats. Restaurants along the water will fill the air with the aromas of simmering garlic and steaming mussels.

What's Included:

Monterosso – Enjoy a Private Scenic Drive along the Italian Riviera

The aroma of frothy cappuccino fills Caffè degli Specchi, which is a popular, local bar that is known for serving decadent coffees along a wooden porch where locals enjoy watching the crowds. The city of Genoa returns to life in the morning with the returning sunlight that glints against the glass dome of Acquario di Genoa , which is the celebrated aquarium. Your private transfer will meet you in the hotel lobby and escort you south toward the five towns of Cinque Terre at Monterosso al Mare.

You will stop along the way to enjoy the comfortable and often-overlooked seaside towns between Genoa and Cinque Terre, indulging in the scents of the Mediterranean Sea and sporadic scents of freshly baked focaccia bread. You will reach the bustling resort town of Santa Margherita Ligure, whose seaside promenade will take you back in time to the grandeur of 17th-century villas. Palm trees rustle in the breeze and fountains add an illustrious trickle of water to the sounds of lapping waves. The Baroque church of Santuario di Nostra Signora della Rosa contains sophisticated frescoes that shine with gold embellishments and carvings.

You can continue to the town of Rapallo for views of the picturesque castle as it rises above the small harbor, regal seaside esplanade, and calming water. The stronghold was built in the 16th century as a safeguard against pirate attacks and remains a fantastic image of the town as it is set above the waves. The center boasts gorgeous boutique shops with large windows that juxtapose the antique facades that are painted with bright colors and line the streets between the ancient walls and Saline Gate.

Monterosso – Discover the Treasured Towns and Wines of Cinque Terre

The small town of Monterosso al Mare stands as the most Northern of the five towns of the renowned Cinque Terre. The long stretch of beach brightens the morning with colorful umbrellas that shade rows of lounge chairs, looking out to the sapphire waters of the Ligurian Sea. The scent of basil will fill the air, deriving from the terraced gardens that rise along the surrounding cliffs. After breakfast, the day will be yours to explore the depths of the town’s history, spreading from the 16th-century fortification that is known as the Aurora Tower to the colossal statue of Neptune that clings to the seaside cliffs and stands 46 feet above sea level. You can take to the former donkey trail that winds through hillsides and connects the towns, or you can travel between each town by short train rides that first connected the Cinque Terre to the outside world in the late 19th century.

You will meet your guide in the town of Manarola in the afternoon and will be interested in learning more about the wines of the particular region. Your guide will lead you into the terraces for a better perspective of the unique ways in which local farmers and winemakers have contained the elements along the steep, maritime mountains. The grapes may feel waxy between your fingers while the air contains aromas of arid soil and the sea breeze. At a local cellar, your guide will pour a sample of the wines that are produced in the region, ending with a taste of the Sciacchetrà , which is a sweet wine that possesses aromas of candied orange, dried fig, and hazelnut.

Monterosso – Visit the Charming Coastal Towns on the Gulf of Poets

Your private guide will meet you in the hotel lobby after breakfast and escort you by boat to the Gulf of Poets for an exceptional exploration of the land and sea that once captivated the likes of Lord Byron and Percy Shelley, beginning with Porto Venere. The mist that rises from the hull of the boat sprays the air as you revel in the marvelous views of the sapphire water and rugged coastline and pass the colorful towns that are scattered between the cliffs. The town of Porto Venere has ancient foundations that once acted as a Roman base that was used on a shipping route between Gaul and Spain. The gates retain Latin inscriptions that hover above the entrance of Via Capellini. The 16th-century Doria Castle looms atop the hill that overlooks the water and Romanesque church of San Pietro. Water taxis crisscross along the sea, taking visitors from the promenade to the nearby island of Palmaria.

After wandering along the sea and through the cobbled lanes, you will continue to the town of Lerici. The Etruscans settled the area, giving way to Roman foundations and economic advancement under the reign of the Republic of Genoa. The natural beauty of the gulf accentuates the majesty of the castle as it rises above the cliffs over Montemarcello-Magra Regional Nature Park. A Roman ship from the 1st century BC lingers beneath the waves where advanced divers can find remnants of marble and massive columns among the ruins while the town fills with the aromas of mussel soup and onions that have been fried in olive oil.

Florence - Explore Stunning Lucca and Pisa before Arriving in Florence

The aroma of lemon trees will overtake the scent of the sea in the morning after breakfast. Before reaching Florence, you will visit the towns of Lucca and Pisa for different perspectives of the history and charms of Tuscany. Shaded promenades that wind around the preserved city walls lead to the interior piazzas that are lined with charming cafes. The scent of espresso becomes prominent around the medieval streets with locals who sip their morning coffee and nibble on freshly baked pastries.

The thick, impressive defensive walls were built between the 16th and 17th centuries on foundations that were laid by the Romans in the 2nd century BC. The walls stand nearly 40 feet tall and reach more than two miles long. Trees, grass, and viewpoints create an enchanting ambiance that adorns the former defensive structure. Inside the city, you will see the Romanesque cathedral of San Martino, which dates back to the 11th century. The façade boasts a unique combination of Lucca and Pisan design, which hides reliefs that were crafted by Nicola Pisano.

You will continue to the famous city of Pisa, which once ruled the seas of the Italian Peninsula before the rise of Genoa. The captivating city has become synonymous with the Leaning Tower with its distinctive four-degree list and iconic Pisan architectural aesthetic. Beyond the tower, you will find the sensational history of the Campo Santo, which is the legendary burial complex that was crafted out of soil that was taken from the Golgotha during the Fourth Crusade. Your guide will point out the history of the artwork on the walls with a portion of the frescoes being restored after melting during an allied bombing in World War II. The sinópie will capture your attention and showcase the detailed composition of the fresco that is made by the actual artist instead of the students or assistants.

Florence – Delight in Florentine History and a Private Cooking Class

The city of Florence contains the mouthwatering aromas of freshly baked brioche that is stuffed with hazelnut cream and accompanied by the scent of fresh espresso as it drifts out of the neighborhood bars. This is where locals tend to enjoy a cup before venturing to work. Your guide will meet you in the hotel lobby and will be excited to introduce you to the marvels of Florence, taking you from beneath the exceptional dome of the Duomo to the fascinating jewelry stores that line the charming shops on the Ponte Vecchio as it arches over the banks of the Arno River. Inside the Uffizi Gallery, your guide will provide greater context for the artwork that is on display, representing the evolution of artwork in Tuscany between the 13th and 18th centuries. You can stop and marvel at the masterful works of Michelangelo, da Vinci, Cimabue, and Veneziano in addition to the stunning Birth of Venus by Botticelli. The incredible parable captures the essence of beauty as it blends Classical mythology and Christian theology.

In the afternoon, you will meet a private chef for a remarkable cooking class that will offer insight into the traditions of Tuscan cuisine that will be revealed in the ingredients, preparation, and satisfying flavors of your multi-course meal. You will enter the private kitchen and notice the subtle, lingering aromas of simmering onions, olive oil, garlic, and tomato. Your chef will then guide you through the process of crafting fresh, traditional noodles such as pappardelle , which you will later cook with minced meat and stew in a sauce for the rich, indulgent part of your meal. You will also experience a hardy, customary flavor that is based on the Tuscan cooking traditions of the Cucina Povera .

Positano – Transfer South with a Tour of Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius

The bells of Campanile ring in the morning, reverberating against the medieval architecture at the heart of the city and pealing along the cobbled lanes that encircle the dramatic dome of the Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral. The rich aroma of leather lingers along the lanes of the San Lorenzo Market as you travel south in a first-class coach that is bound for the city of Naples. Your private guide will greet you at the train station and introduce you to the amazing history that is on display in Pompeii, which is a city that has been preserved in up to 20 feet of ash and pumice after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. You will follow your guide along the wide boulevards and small walkways that create the rigid grid on which all the Roman cities were planned. You will view the ancient Roman Forum, where pillars and platforms connote the importance of the plaza at the center of civic and religious life.

The Villa dei Misteri captures the grandeur and wealth of the famous Roman port city with 90 rooms that represent one of the most complete structures that have been left standing after the eruption. The Dionysia frieze overtakes an entire wall of the dining room and dates back to the 1st century BC, depicting a woman who is draped in fabric at the beginnings of a private ritual. At the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, you will have the opportunity to follow the short path that leads to the summit at 4,203 feet above sea level. You can gaze down into the depths of the fuming crater that will show the continued vitality of its geothermal activity, or you can turn and look out over the turquoise water that sweeps across the Bay of Naples.

Positano – Traverse the Towns and Shoreline of the Amalfi Coast

The tranquil town of Positano is the most Western on the Amalfi Coast, and it embodies the elegance, history, and dramatic views for which the greater, 25-mile stretch of shoreline is known. The scent of lemons will be the strongest in the morning, stemming from the terraced orchards that spread across the steep cliffs. Your private driver will meet you at the hotel after breakfast and ferry you between the fabled towns of the Amalfi Coast at your preferred pace, beginning with the treasured walkways of Positano.

The aroma of leather will drift out of a small shoemaker’s workshop where the cobbler crafts handmade sandals while guests wander along the cobbled lanes. The houses shine with pastel colors that were nearly built atop one another on the rugged limestone cliffs that overlook the calming, sapphire waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, which is broken only by the remnants of the 13th-century watchtowers and the cupola of the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta that glistens with decorative majolica tiles.

You will continue to the town of Amalfi, after which the eponymous coast was named. The former power and wealth of the town remains prevalent along the main streets and can be revealed in the preserved grandeur of the Duomo. Elegant shops lead to the central square where 60 steps climb to the entrance. You will find the captivating Byzantine doors that date back to the 11th century, acting as the entrance portal to the lavish cathedral that is set beneath Arabesque arches. The interior Cloister of Paradise contains a hidden forest of pillars and archways.

Positano – Explore Splendor on Capri and Enjoy a Pizza-Making Class

You will sail along the Tyrrhenian Sea in the morning on a ferry that is bound for the island of Capri, finding the maritime cliffs that reach upwards of 200 feet tall. The funicular connects the Marina Grande to the Piazzetta where cafes fill the square with tables, chairs, and mouthwatering aromas of fresh espresso. You can enjoy the ambiance by looking past the funicular for impressive views over the water and by looking back at the ridges of the Bay of Naples and along the Amalfi Coast. The splendors of Capri will be yours to explore and experience at your leisure, so you can choose to take to the narrow lanes of Capri Town that are lined with sophisticated boutique shops and elegant restaurants, or you can visit the cathedral of Anacapri that floats above the surrounding island atop 500 stone steps.

The 18th-century church of San Michele reflects with majolica tiles that are spread across the floor, depicting images from the Book of Genesis when Adam and Eve were expelled from Eden. The chairlift that leads from Piazza Vittoria can take you to the summit of Monte Solaro at 1,929 feet above sea level for a majestic panorama of the Faraglioni sea stacks, distant coastline, and the 16th-century monastery of Cetrella. Upon returning to Positano, you will meet your private chef for a different perspective of Italian cuisine that will focus on the regional specialty of Neapolitan pizza. The sensational flavors stem from local, seasonal ingredients with the simple collection of ingredients that will shine with every bite. You will dig your fingers into the flour and shape the necessary dough as you craft the famous dish as you follow a locally celebrated recipe.

Positano – Depart for Home

At breakfast, you can enjoy the subtle aromas of lemon and oranges as they emanate from the nearby orchards and blend into the relaxing scent of the sea breeze. The sunlight will once again wash over the water in the morning, highlighting the sapphire hues of the water. Your private transfer will meet you in the hotel lobby after breakfast and escort you around the looming summit of Mount Vesuvius, around the Bay of Naples, and away from the ships that glide through the harbor of the city to reach Naples International Airport for your flight home.

How to get around the Amalfi Coast Transport options for all budgets and season

Amalfi Coast Transport: handy transport guide to help you plan your travels on the Amalfi Coast, taking into accounts season (it matters!), budget and crowds.

One of the hardest things to figure out, when planning trip to the Amalfi Coast, is the best transport to explore the area.

The reason for this is that, while there are several options for transport in the area, both private and public, which one to choose depends on a couple factors: budget, of course, but also season and travel style.

I have visited the Amalfi Coast many times and on different budget. I have seen it on a shoestring, using buses and ferries, and on more generous budget that allowed for the use of private cars.

I have visited it in summer, in the low season, I have been with kids and without.

So, if you are researching the best way to get around the Amalfi Coast and transport options, I can help!

The best ways to get around the Amalfi Coast TL:DR

Unlike other parts of Italy, the Amalfi Coast doesn’t have trains.

In the area, Sorrento and Vietri sul Mare have a station but there are no train connections between Amalfi Coast. Therefore the only options are the following:

Amalfi Coast ferries and boat tours

The most beautiful thing about the Amalfi Coast is the coast itself and the best way to appreciate its beauty if from the water, either by private boat / boat tour of by taking the ferries.

Private Boat tours are a pricey and wonderful way to explore the coast.

They are one of the most popular things to do on the Amalfi Coast, there are many to choose from and they are, for many, the highlight of a trip.

Tours come in all shapes and sizes: you can get big group boats, private boats, simple vessels, luxury yachts, you can get day tours, sunset tours.. the sky is the limit here or rather, the budget is!

child on boat Amalfi coast

Boat tours are an offering very much aimed at overseas wealthy visitors and come with prices to match. If the experience is withing grass, they are a wonderful way to spend the day. If it isn’t, don’t despair! There is another way to explore the Amalfi Coast from the water!

A very popular, inexpensive and fun way to see the Amalfi Coast from the water, without breaking the bank, is to explore by ferry.

Ferries go up and down the Amalfi Coast regularly during the day connecting the coastal towns to one another. They area efficient, pleasant and have open decks for enjoying the stunning views of this area.

They are an absolutely excellent way to explore this stretch of coast however, they do have some downsides:

First and foremost: ferries are seasonal. Ferries along Amalfi Coast only run during summer, both for weather conditions and demand: normally the start operations in April, slowly increase daily runs, and close operations for the season at the end of October.

Ferries do not serve all towns equally: bigger towns get more frequent ferries, while small ones only have limited boats. This means that you have to be organized in terms of times and you may need to mic and match with other means of transport.

Last but not least: ferries can be very busy. Especially in late spring and summer, which is the busiest time of the year on the Amalfi Coast, you may need to book and/ or wait in line, which means you may need a bit of patience.

Personally, I adore hopping around by ferry; if you embrace the fact that is it public transport, with all the good and bad that comes with it, I believe it is a fabulous way to explore the Amalfi Coast in summer!

The ferry companies serving the Amalfi Coast are travelmar.it , caremar.it and NLG.it – serving different towns/ stretched. Check the website of each for schedule, types of boats, destinations and prices.

Amalfi Coast by car

The Amalfi Coast is famous for being a beautiful, scenic drive; therefore, getting a car and driving it may sound like the perfect idea. In reality, it is and it isn’t!

The main thing to know about driving on the Amalfi Coast are:

The Amalfi Coastal road is a scenic, meandering two lane road (one each way). Driving here requires not being afraid of heights and being comfortable on a road with many beds, a cliff on one side and a drop (with guardrail) on the other.

You do not want to tackle this road when tired, at night, in poor weather conditions or with anyone in the car who suffers from motion sickness.

Amalfi coast main road, bend

You also do not want to tackle this drive in the busy season, as traffic can get bumper to bumper and you find yourself stuck for hours, potentially between cars and massive buses trying to maneuver their way around the bends!

At busy times you may also encounter driving restrictions.

To limit congestion, on specific days during the year and in summer, the area implements an alternate registration plate driving permit system, which means you can only drive on certain days if your car reg ends with an odd number and on others if it ends with even one.

Last but no least, parking is a nightmare in this area and the few spaces available often come at a high cost.

All this considered, I think you’ll agree driving on the Amalfi Coast is only ok in low season, in good weather and if you are comprtblae with the type of driving requires.

Buses on the Amalfi Coast

Buses on the Amalfi Coast are a great way to explore the coast in the low season (when ferries do not go) or to reach towns that are not on the water, such as Ravello.

Unfortunately, however, they share the same issues as the cars, when it comes to traffic, and are therefore a good mean of transport in low season, but a busy and potentially frustrating one at busy times.

If planning on using the bus, always factor in possible traffic and potential motion sickness due to the bends.

Make sure you get tickets before you board. I highly recommend to check the schedule locally for the most up to date information on the actual bus service running at the time of your visit.

Taxis and private cars on the Amalfi Coast

Taxis and private car service are a popular way for visitor to get around the coast as they allow to get from town to town when ferries do not run.

Taxis and private drivers are a costly way to move around the coast but are the one thing that will allow you to reach more remote restaurants, viewpoints and accommodation.

If you think you’ll want to avail of taxis while in the area, i recommend you ask your host for the most local company to your accommodation and make sure you have data and connection to call them when needed.

Private car service (NCC service in Italian) is a popular way to explore the area with a private driver / tour guide. Services of this type in the area offer both driving only and guided options and usually must be booked in advance.

Need to know: if you are on the Amalfi Coast with kids , you need to know that taxis do not offer and do not require car seats for children. Private car service does not require the use of car seats either but good ones are able to offer children seats if asked in advance.

Taxis and private cart service tend to stay available all year round. However, in the busy season, on the main road, they encounter the same traffic issues as cars and buses. I recommend to keep this in mind especially if you get a metered taxi.

I hope this very quick overview of transport options around the Amalfi Coast was useful. Safe travel planning!

F ew countries can compete with Italy’s tourist appeal . Anyone who visits can enjoy fantastic cities, quaint villages, a string of picture-perfect coastlines, amazing cuisine and a fascinating history.

Alhough skiing , city breaks or a trip to one of the Italian lakes all have their own merits, there is a way to get a taste of several different parts of the country in one whirlwind trip.

Cruises around the Bel Paese give passengers the opportunity to see Italy ’s full range of sights. You can start with the romance of Venice and wind around to the rugged island beauty of Sicily and Sardinia, or begin surrounded by the stark coastal beauty of the Cinque Terre and end in hectic, characterful Naples , via the enchanting capital of Rome .

Whether you just want to see one destination or a handful, there’s likely a cruise to suit you; we’ve rounded up some of the best below.

Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast contains a little bit of everything that has made Italy so famous: beautiful coastlines, golden sands, picturesque towns, ancient historic sites and a hearty slice of la dolce vita .

The main towns along this coast include Amalfi, Sorrento and Positano , each renowned for offering a taste of the highlife in often luxurious surroundings, whether that be laid-back beaches or grandiose hotels. Pompeii lies close to these towns, offering an incredible insight into a famous bit of world history, while driving part of the Amalfi Coast’s winding roads is the best way to get amazing views while taking in some delightful towns.

How to do it

See both Sicily and the Amalfi Coast with the ‘ Amalfi & Sicily ’ seven-night package offered by Star Clippers. It starts in Civitavecchia, taking you to Amalfi and Sorrento before moving on to Messina and circling back to Rome.

Prices from £3,629pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and select entertainment. Departing 6 July 2024.

The capital is a beautiful fusion of historic and contemporary Italian life, from the modern cuisine and nightlife of Monti to the old houses and trattorias of Trastevere or Parione.

The Eternal City is also Europe’s most landmark-filled destination , with everything from Roman ruins to 18th-century fountains. The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Pantheon are the undoubtably highlights, as are the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. The Vatican City is also contained within Rome, and you don’t want to miss the Sistine Chapel or St Peter’s Basilica.

Most cruises to this part of the country actually dock at nearby Civitavecchia, which is roughly one hour from the capital. Rome is often a starting point for cruises too, as passengers can head north to the Cinque Terre, east to Sardinia and south to Naples and Sicily.

The  Italian Treasures  cruise offered by Atlas Ocean Voyages begins in Valletta , the historic Maltese capital, but after departing very much focuses on the eastern Italian coast. It stops for a night in both Syracuse and Giardini Naxos (on Sicily), before departing to the Amalfi Coast and Capri and then finishing in the capital, where you can explore at your leisure before flying home.

Prices from £2,946pp including eight nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and onshore excursions. The company is currently running a promotion where the ‘second guest sails free’, so it is possible to get the entire package for just £2,946. Departing 1 September 2024.

Venice is perhaps the most beautiful of all Italian cities, situated on a vast lagoon and criss-crossed by dozens of bridges that hang over its canals. Its waterways are lined with the colourful facades of centuries-old buildings, many of which carry a Venetian style that is unique to the city, making for an eclectic cityscape.

A gondola trip, a stroll around St Mark’s Square, a walk over the Ponte Rialto and a visit to the Doge’s Palace are customary for those seeing the city for the first time, though for many the real attraction is getting lost in the sea of mazy alleys and historic bridges .

Many cruises start and end in Venice too, though due to its location at the top of the Adriatic, it can take a while to cruise down to other popular destinations like Bari, Sicily and the Amalfi Coast. If you’re visiting on a cruise, chances are it’ll be a longer one, or that it’ll stop in destinations in northern Croatia , Dubrovnik or northern Greece .

Azmara Cruises’ ‘ Italy Intensive Voyage ’ takes passengers all the way from Rome to Venice. It begins by going north to Florence , then turning back on itself and going south to the Amalfi Coast and Sicily. After a brief stop in Kotor, Montenegro , you’ll finish in Venice, with the opportunity to explore at your leisure before flying home.

Prices from £2,060pp including 10 nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks, evening entertainment and select onshore excursions. Departing 10 April 2024.

Sicily is another of Italy’s famous islands, sharing a part of the Mediterranean with neighbouring Sardinia. It is equally as charming as Sardinia, and filled with similarly beguiling towns, a variety of natural landscapes and some of the finest culture and history that the country has to offer.

Tradition is paramount here, something that is reflected in a proud local populace. It is also visible in towns and cities like Palermo, and the timeless beauty of Syracuse, as well as on the olive groves and vineyards that dot the slopes of Mount Etna. It makes Sicily a great place to come if you want to see modern-day Italian living with a dose of outdoor adventure, in places like the Parco dell’Etna, along with historic charm (such as that at Syracuse).

Windstar Cruises’ ‘ Sicilian Spendours ’ cruise begins and ends in the Italian capital, but as the name suggests, this trip very much focuses on the largest island in the Mediterranean. It begins by heading to the Amalfi Coast, but then moves on to three Sicilian towns – Trapani, Porto Empedocle and Catania, via Gozo and Malta .

Prices from £3,105pp including 10 nights’ accommodation, meals and onboard entertainment. Departing 28 May 2024.

Sardinia, which sits off the eastern coast around six hours from Civitavecchia by ferry, is one of Italy’s most popular summer destinations. A favourite among both tourists and Italians, it is home to a slew of great beaches – including Cala Goloritzé and the Costa Smerelda – and so is a good choice for days spent flitting between water sports and lying in the sun.

Though it’s understandable if you want to spend most of your time here on the sands, it would be remiss not to visit some of the pastel-hued towns and verdant national parks that lie inland and on the coast. Places like Alghero, Bosa and San Teodoro contain plenty of history throughout their cobbled streets, while Asinara and Gennargentu are two of the most picturesque natural areas.

Sardinia’s southerly location means that cruises that stop here often carry on to Sicily and Malta, and may go further on to the Balearics, Greek islands or even Tunisia .

The ‘ Enchanting Italian Coastlines ’ tour from Emerald Cruises covers both Sardinia and the eastern coast over a period of seven nights. It begins in the capital, moving first to Sorrento and Amalfi and then crossing the Mediterranean to Sardinia and Corsica before looping back.

Prices from £3,379pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and airport transfers. Departing 27 April 2024.

Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre competes with the Amalfi Coast for the title of Italy’s most famous coastal area, but the Italian Riviera offers a different kind of beauty in its emerald waters and pastel-coloured towns. The region is part of Liguria, and consists of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

Each one has an abundance of old Italian charm, from the faded colours that come alive at sunset to the mazes of alleys leading up from tiny harbours. Only Monterosso has a proper beach, but this village quintet isn’t the place for solely a beach holiday, despite the coastlines. Instead, wander aimlessly through the villages, enjoy a laid-back meal or take to any of the surrounding hiking paths.

These once isolated villages are now tourist hotspots in their own right, with the Cinque Terre Express one of the best ways to get between them. Most cruises dock at La Spezia, the province’s main city, which lies just 20 minutes from the nearest Cinque Terre village, Riomaggiore.

The Cinque Terre is a less frequented destination on longer cruises, so the best bet is to visit as part of a multi-country cruise. Celebrity Cruises offers one such option with their ‘ Italian Riviera & France ’ package, which departs from Rome and initially heads south to Naples before circling around to La Spezia and Santa Margherita. After some time spent enjoying the Italian Riviera, you move on to the French one, seeing Cannes and Marseille before finishing in Barcelona.

Prices from £1,209pp including nine nights’ accommodation, return flights, all meals, daily activities and entertainment. Departing 4 June 2024.

Naples is a fascinating city, buoyed by a vibrant and chaotic energy and blessed with beautiful surroundings – including Mount Vesuvius and an azure bay – and an eclectic blend of architecture.

The city itself has a wealth of culture and history, from the recent and immaterial – such as its devotion to pizza or its football club – to the ancient and pertinent, including the Duomo cathedral and a large collection of Greco-Roman artefacts at the National Archaeological Museum. Be sure to talk a walk around the Spanish Quarter, Centro Storico and Spaccanapoli (the city’s main thoroughfare) to get a real sense of how life is lived in this hectic city.

Naples is the closest major city to the Amalfi Coast, and as such many trips here are combined with a visit to towns like Sorrento or Positano.

You’re spoilt for choice when including Naples in a cruise itinerary, and many cruises that stop here also include visits to parts of Greece and Croatia. A seven-day Mediterranean cruise from Norwegian Cruise Line takes advantage of these stops, taking guests from Rome to Venice via Valletta, Split and Corfu. Nevertheless, the focus is still on Italy, taking in the historic capital, the romantic canals of Venice and all of Naples’ characterful chaos (with an added stop in Messina, Sicily).

Prices from £1,573pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and onboard entertainment. Departing 14 August 2024.
