The best boat parties and booze cruises in NYC

Take your summer festivities to sea with a booze cruise or boat party in NYC.

This summer, the heat is on and the best way to cool down is to get out on the water. You athletic types can try kayaking NYC’s rivers , and landlubbers can stick to the city’s prominent waterfront restaurants and boat bars , but if you have any hint of seafaring fun in you, a boat party in NYC is one of the best things to do in the summer . Open waters, sea breezes and stunning views of Manhattan are all on tap when you embark on a booze cruise in NYC. Oh and did we mention full bars, great food, and live music?

Take your summer celebrations to the next level and set sail with these boat parties. There’s something for everyone, whether it’s a cantina-themed boat, a lobster-centric excursion, a fine dining cruise or a leisurely happy hour float. You’re more than welcome to rock the boat on a rock n roll cruise, and cocktails are tastier when sipped on a yacht. Check out these NYC boat parties for a totally nautical summer.

An email you’ll actually love

Boat parties in NYC

North River Lobster Company

1.  North River Lobster Company

  • Restaurants

North River Lobster Company , New York City’s beloved floating seafood restaurant since 2014, offers four daily sailings at 1pm, 3pm, 5pm and 7pm. Afternoon cruises are 1 hour and the 7pm cruise is a two-hour route to the Statue of Liberty and back—how beautiful! On the menu: Maine Lobster Rolls, seafood platters, burgers, and ready-to-share appetizers. New menu items this year include tuna tartare, clam dip and chips, The Skagen shrimp roll, and sweet lobster clawsicles in four different flavors (mango, piña colada, strawberry and lime). The best deal on board may be the $17 glass of rosé and 3 oyster special, or you can go all out with the epic 28-inch lobster roll (dubbed the world’s largest lobster roll) for $140, to feed a group.

La Barca Cantina

2.  La Barca Cantina

La Barca Cantina, the only Mexican restaurant on a boat in NYC, serves a summer street food-inspired menu that’ll get the party started for you and your friends. Based at Pier 81, next to its sister-restaurant North River Lobster Company, La Barca spans three levels with an expansive outdoor top deck with a bar and table seating, a bi-level interior space with two bars, table seating and booth-like tables—perfect for large groups.  Even better, it takes short cruises multiple times per day, five days a week, offering up sweeping views of the NYC skyline. (It's a must to reserve a table for cocktails at sunset.)

Alive After Five Happy Hour Cruise

3.  Alive After Five Happy Hour Cruise

You didn’t forget all about Happy Hour, did you? It’s basically your dang right after making it through your day job. Gather your clocked-out coworkers and friends and board the Alive After Five cruise, which makes the most of happy hour—it actually lasts two hours —along the Hudson River in City Cruises’ Sensation yacht. You’ll have two climate-controlled desks to choose from, plus a covered roof deck, and multiple dance floors if that’s your jam. And if you still have sea legs for social life after all that social distancing, the cruise has a DJ to get the party moving.

Rocks Off Concert Cruises

4.  Rocks Off Concert Cruises

If you’re looking for yacht rock, look away: the savvy organizers of this floating concert snare hard rock bands like Murphy’s Law, Badfish, and Electric Six that draw die hard fans for serious—and often seriously sweaty—rock sessions. They know the ropes when it comes to pulling off a bash in a boat, so make sure you’re ready for plenty of percussion and less calls for mutiny than encores.

Bateaux New York Dining Cruises

5.  Bateaux New York Dining Cruises

Is it really a party if you’re sitting down? Yes—it’s called a dinner party . On the fancier side (semi-formal dress is encouraged), this dinner cruise looks particularly swell inside the European-inspired Bateaux New York, a glass-roofed boat that soaks in Manhattan’s lit skyline after sunset while navigating the East and Hudson Rivers. The experience takes it up a notch with live music—a two-piece acoustic band led by a female vocalist—and takes dinner to the next level with seafood towers, filet mignon, and lobster tails.

Classic Cocktails with a Twist

6.  Classic Cocktails with a Twist

Head to Chelsea Piers and say cheers with an afternoon cocktail party aboard a 1920’s inspired yacht, an intimate little party boat that rounds out a 1.75 hour journey with modern riffs on old-school cocktails, like a Sake Gimlet or a Rosemary Rickey. The charter, Sail NYC, runs a tight ship—and we mean that literally, considering the boat’s smaller size—that’ll get you tipsy in no time. Yes, the focus is technically on the booze, but also on the views seen from the yacht’s large windows as you ease past classic sites like the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, and Ellis Island.

Evening Wine and Jazz Cruise

7.  Evening Wine and Jazz Cruise

Feeling snazzy? There’s just something about live jazz that brings pinky-up vibes, yet not too stuck up that you can’t pack your own picnic to bring on board. This Manhattan by Sail excursion takes place on the Shearwater Classic Schooner, a restored 1929 sailing ship, 82 feet long, with an original Rangoon teak deck and mahogany interiors. This year, you’ll get three glasses of wine plus an extra of good vibes: it partners with Keyed UP, a program by Jazz Generation that helps fund jazz performances across NYC, thus giving local jazz musicians—plus jazz in general—a boost.

Narwhal Yacht Charters

8.  Narwhal Yacht Charters

A party is what you make of it, especially when you make it your own . For a little more privacy, groups of up to six can rent their own excursion with Narwhal Yacht Charters—it’s on the pricier end, but the seasoned charter is worth their salt, having just celebrated its 10th season on NYC’s waters. The captain provides the necessities (bottled water, sodas, ice, napkins, that sorta stuff) but the rest is up to you. Pick up food from your favorite restaurant, bring all of your favorite booze, and set sail with your besties.

Our Reviews

Very helpful and detailed communications. I had a lot of questions, and Margarita was very patient and attentive. I walked into the day of my event assured that Empire Cruises took care of everything, and they did.

What a beautiful way to celebrate! The crew was fabulous and exceeded our expectations. I loved everything about it, and the food was good. Dancing, drinking, and partying with the city lights created a new appreciation for the city.

Police charge man with manslaughter in death of Calgary toddler

CALGARY — Police in Calgary have charged a man with manslaughter in the death of a two-year-old girl. Olivia Hayden was rushed to hospital in September 2022 and was later pronounced dead. The toddler's death was deemed a homicide following an autopsy and a lengthy police investigation. Winston Campbell, who is 45, was arrested Wednesday. He is scheduled to appear in court Friday. Police say the accused knew the child, and her death was not random. This report by The Canadian Press was first publ

Tecnomar Cat 133

Another highlight of Cat 133 is the stern: Two hulls, two internal wings, and two foldable side doors come together to create a swimming platform that is about 52 feet wide when fully opened. This Is It , on the other hand, has more of an enclosed aft deck and two fixed swim platforms.

The interior details of Cat 133 have not yet been shared, but the vessel will be able to accommodate up to 10 guests and 11 crew. This Is It sleeps a total of 12 guests and 12 crew in a bright asymmetric interior with skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows aplenty. As for amenities, This Is It features an indoor cinema, a curved cocktail bar, a spa, a playroom, and a two-level vertical garden. Hopefully, Cat 133 is also blessed with some of those glitzy features. (The renders show it has a small infinity pool on the aft of the upper deck, at least.)

Regarding power, the newcomer is equipped with twin MAN V-12 engines and two 50 kW electric bow thrusters that enable a maximum speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 15 knots. This Is It is a hair quicker, with the ability to hit 21.5 knots at full tilt or cruise at 20 knots.

Something Cat 133 has that This Is It does not is the ability to generate clean, green power: Roughly 750 square feet of solar panels are integrated into the cat’s superstructure arches and hardtop. Cat 133 is certainly smaller than This Is It , but it may be more sustainable.

The New Cat Class

  • By Lenny Rudow
  • Updated: February 20, 2020

Power catamarans have always had hardcore fans, and we could all argue for the umpteenth time about whether powercats are better than monohulls. Yawn . The truth is, there’s a relatively small but dedicated group of powercat lovers who will never agree with the monohull crowd. Trying to persuade one or the other to change their minds is akin to locking Rush Limbaugh and Rachel Maddow in a room and saying, “Go.”

A more interesting debate is about what, in any particular catamaran’s design, triggers such dedication. I say particular because one of the great judgmental errors naysayers make is lumping all multihull boats into the same category. Nobody would say all monohulls are alike, yet powercats are often painted with an exceedingly broad brush and then dismissed or embraced on the whole.

Truth be told, whether you’re considering a 40-foot center-console cat with quadruple outboards or an 80-foot cat cruiser with the elegance of a Trumpy, the ability of a designer to take advantage of the twin-hull platform is often the key to the design’s success—or lack thereof.

Amasea Yachts 84

Invincible 35, horizon pc60.

“The design work on a cat is far more involved than on a monohull,” says Larry Graf, who started off his design career by creating Glacier Bay powercats and, today, designs and builds Aspen Power Catamarans. “With a monohull, you design from the centerline out, then mirror it on the computer and pow —you have a full hull. A typical monohull hull can be done in three to five days. But for a cat, the best shapes are often asymmetric, so each hull has two halves that are not the same.”

And the hull is just the beginning of a cat’s story. Is it easier to design an interior that fits into one hull or into two separate hulls plus a center deck level? That cats have more complexity on the inside is a no-brainer.

However, having the two separate hulls also provides advantages. One is privacy on a level that can’t be matched in any monohull, if a cat’s designer works with the shape of the boat.

McConaghy 59p

World cat 400dc-x.

The key to harnessing this privacy advantage is the ability to separate staterooms not just with thin bulkheads but instead with entire hulls, or at the very least with head compartments and companionways. In part, this ability contributes to the popularity of powercats in the charter market.

Lex Raas—president of charter and special initiatives at MarineMax, which launched the Aquila line for charter in 2012 with the Sino Eagle Group—says the Aquila 48 illustrates how privacy can be done right on a catamaran.

“The privacy advantage specifically is that the port hull is a full owner’s cabin,” he says. “There are no shared bulkheads. And on the starboard-side, there are two absolutely equal cabins with equal heads and showers between them. You can take two couples with you, and nobody feels that they’re getting the short end of the stick.”

The elimination of shared bulkheads increases privacy quite a bit on that Aquila, but examples become even more stark as you consider larger yachts. One of Sunreef’s newest offerings, the 80 Sunreef Power, for example, can have six staterooms—all separated by full heads or companionways, with no two staterooms sharing a common bulkhead.

Fountaine Pajot MY 40

Silent-yachts 55.

The ability to have more staterooms that are more private is in large part a function of beam on a cat, designers say.

“Beam is gained for the whole length of the boat, and the cross-deck provides a huge space,” says Mathias Maurios, a naval architect at VPLP Design in Paris, a firm known for designing twin-hulled yachts. “And while, yes, the individual hulls are narrower than a single monohull body, on the whole, usable space is larger than with a monohull. The width allows for more of the valuable interior and deck space.”

Maurios points to the Lagoon Seventy 8 as an example. “The staterooms are the size of the cabins in a much larger motoryacht,” he says.

The other big advantages many cats can claim relate to seakeeping, speed and efficiency. Again, no two powercats are alike, but a close look at specific models is illuminating. As we reported in Yachting ’s review of the Lagoon Seventy 8, for example, at a 10-knot cruise, the boat has 4,000 nautical-mile transatlantic range—a boast that few engine-driven yachts of the same length overall can make. Smaller cats can also have extreme ranges for their size; consider that the Fountaine Pajot MY 44 can reportedly cruise more than 1,000 nautical miles between pit stops.

“Speed, stability and comfort are the prime words illustrating catamarans,” Maurios says, “and we’ve always believed that multihulls are ideal.”

Lagoon Sixty 7

When designed for speed instead of efficiency, cats enjoy a different sort of advantage. Consider the Freeman 42LR, a quad-engine, 62-knot center-console. That boat gets close to 1 nmpg when cruising at just under 50 knots. And because the vessel has a compression tunnel—air gets compressed between the hulls at high speed, creating a cushion that softens the blows when striking waves—it can maintain that pace in conditions that would make most monohulls rather uncomfortable, to say the least.

What about those disadvantages the cat haters often point to? The unusual handling characteristics, the need for wider slips to match wider beams, the nontraditional looks and higher initial cost—sure, there are trade-offs. Then again, every vessel has some level of compromise.

So, let the pundit debates rage on. But remember: Power catamarans are just as different and distinct from one to the next as monohulls are, and smart design is the key to harnessing the advantages of the form.

2023 Boat Buyers Guide: Catamarans

Catamaran spinning circles

The popularity of the multihull (aka catamaran or cat) fishing boats has never been greater, as more and more boatbuilders enter this growing segment of the market. The inherent stability of the catamaran design rolls less with the seas, making fishing offshore less tiresome and more comfortable. Available from 20 to 48 feet, catamarans typically offer a large fishing platform with generous storage and fishing amenities. They are available in a wide variety of deck layouts, including center-consoles, dual-consoles, and even pilothouse and express variants.

Catamaran foredeck

Big Picture

The large deck area of a catamaran enables many large underdeck storage lockers and insulated fish boxes in the sponsons. This gives anglers ample room for gear and the day’s catch. The catamaran’s stability, fishability, and smooth ride in rough seas make it attractive to anglers as well as day-cruisers. A center-console version adds 360 degrees of angler access to the rail. With the dual-console design, generous seating behind a beam-to-beam windshield makes for a great family fishing-friendly setup.

Live bait is one of the most popular types of fishing in virtually every coastal zone. To do it successfully requires optimal water capacity and proper flow. The minimum size of the outflow water plumbing should be twice the size of the inflow. The plumbing should have a drain at the bottom to shed scales at the end of the day, as well as a drain at the top of the well to adjust capacity and allow overflow. Above-deck transom-mounted wells should fully flood to the lids when running to keep baits from getting beat up.

Tip: A sump box with multiple pumps in case a pump fails is the best setup for first-rate livewells. Conveniently located inflow and outflow valves make it easy to optimize the flow without tiring your bait from swimming too much in the well.

Catamaran helm

Rod Storage

Having enough rod holders is essential to be successful for opportunity fishing. Look for vertical rod storage along the console and across the back of the T-top. Many models also have rod holders along the outboard transom wall. Having plenty of gunwale rod holders for drift- and kite-fishing is helpful.

Tip: Placing adjustable swivel rod holders by Gemlux makes deep-dropping, lure-fishing and drifting even easier because they allow your rods to face the direction the baits are fishing, yet they can be swiveled back to keep rods from sticking out of the boat while running and docking.

Manufacturers often offer multiple choices for horsepower, but whatever the choice, the engines must come in pairs. For example, you might order twin outboards (one for each sponson) or four outboards (two for each sponson), but single- or triple-outboard configurations are not common on a cat. Optimal selection should be made based on user load, weight of the boat, ride comfort , performance desires, and best case for resale. It’s a rare day when you can run wide open, but having more horsepower gives better torque at slower speeds and thus better control. Running larger engines slower gives better fuel efficiency too.

Tip: When possible, choose the highest horsepower offered because it typically leads to a better resale value with a shorter sales cycle.

Power steering from engine manufacturer Optimus or SeaStar is essential with the higher horsepower required for larger boats, and it makes installing and operating the upper station in a tower far more practical and comfortable.

With the power demands of electronics, livewell pumps, stereo amps and more, it is wise to have at least two house batteries, and for larger boats, a third or fourth with a multibank charger for dockside. Each engine should have its own dedicated battery as well.

Typically choosing the largest screen or multiple screens that will fit on the console is best-case scenario for ease of use, ergonomics, and visibility. VHF radios, stereo controller, and equipment switches for lighting, pumps, and accessories should all be integrated with greatest visibility and ease of operator reach.

A Tale of Two Hulls

A catamaran rides on pair of hulls, or sponsons, each thinner and sharper than  that of a similarly sized monohull boat. The narrow sponsons of the cat tend to slice easily through water to deliver a smooth ride, even in rough seas. At the same time, with the sponsons positioned out to the sides of the boat, cats tend to roll less, thus providing great stability to enhance crew comfort, security and safety. However, cats tend to corner more flatly than a monohull, and some hulls (but not all) tend to lean outward versus inward during a turn.

Catamaran running

Experts Say

Newer designs such as Invincible’s Morelli and Melvin-designed semi-asymmetrical sponsons eliminate some of the negatives of the cat design, such as “sneezing,” where water sprays out the front of the boat when hitting a wave. They’ve also controlled the uncomfortable “outboard lean” sensation common in older designs when in a turn. Once transitioned to a catamaran, many become true believers and preach the benefits of the design.

Editor Says: Saltwater fishing cats not only offer superb stability and smooth ride, but some also display exceptional speed and range. I recall one trip out of Key West, Florida, aboard an Invincible 40 Cat with four 350 hp outboards to the Dry Tortugas. It was a 60-mile run, and we made it there in 70 minutes. We caught more fish than our arms could bear, and then dashed back to Key West, arriving in time for cocktail hour on the same day. -Jim Hendricks, Staff Editor, Boating and Fishing Group

An indispensible learning tool; the smallest boat from New Cat is for the smallest sailors. The New Cat 12 symbolises the advance of multihulls over monohulls. In sailing schools, children prefer the small cat to the Optimist. The cat doesn't fill up with water as the Optimist does and therefore doesn't need balling out! On a cat, the platform is good and stable and children thus gain confidence quicker. The little cat makes learning easy but still with a sensation of speed. The New Cat 12 was designed for two children of 10 to 12 years of age or even three younger sailors.

2024 Boat of the Year: Best Cruising Catamaran Over 50 Feet

  • By Herb McCormick
  • December 15, 2023

Fountaine Pajot Aura 51

It was perhaps fitting that Fountaine-Pajot and Lagoon Catamarans—two longtime pillars in the production catamaran community—came head-to-head for the title of best cruising cat over 50 feet for 2024. Talk about symmetry: Both boats measure in at about 51 feet. A nearly exact price point of just around $1.6 million. Each is produced by one of the pioneering French multihull builders that’s been at the game for decades. In some ways, this matchup was not unlike a heavyweight boxing bout between Ali and Frazier, or a good old-fashioned feud like the Hatfields and McCoys. It was a duel that the judges relished and dreaded because the competition would undoubtedly be close—but there could be only one champ.

Winner: Fountaine-Pajot Aura 51

During deliberations, judge Mark Pillsbury summarized the overall layout of the Aura 51, a viewpoint shared by his fellow panelists: “A length overall of 51 feet is enough space to give designers options when it comes to how a cruising cat is laid out, and Fountaine-Pajot takes advantage of this by offering a variety of layouts, with up to six cabins in charter mode. The boat we sailed in Annapolis had what they term a ‘double Maestro layout,’ i.e., a master cabin aft in each hull, with guest quarters forward. It would be a boat that two owners might share, sailing separately or together occasionally. I really liked their decision to locate the helm station on the Aura partway between the cockpit and the flybridge, which they called the sky lounge. That way, the skipper stays in contact with guests below and above, and has good visibility astern when docking. I also like the separation between the steering seat and the three winches on the cabin top. Shorthanded, the autopilot can be engaged when the skipper steps forward to trim sails, and with crew, the trimmer has room to work and the skipper room to steer. We had light wind the day we sailed, only about 5 to 8 knots, and the Aura made 4 knots closehauled—a good run for a big, well-stocked cruising cat.

Judge Herb McCormick weighed in: “I really thought that this category was a toss-up. Both boats will be sold to private owners and will also be set up for the charter trade. At the end of the day, what leaned me toward the Aura was that helmsman’s arrangement, centered between the cockpit and the top deck. I loved that big flybridge on the Lagoon, which will be a great space especially on charter, but this is the best ‘cruising’ cat, not best ‘charter’ cat, and that one feature I believe is better-suited to real cruising.”

Runner-up: Lagoon Catamarans 51

Lagoon 52 being tested during Boat of the Year

The French boatbuilding industry is to be applauded for its forward-thinking approach to sustainable building practices and exploring next-generation powering and propulsion systems. Judge Tim Murphy focused in on Lagoon’s approach: “This is largest Lagoon fully intended for owner-operators. Beginning with 55, the next size up in the range, a professional captain is expected to be involved. Lagoon produces 275 boats per year. From this year’s Boat of the Year fleet, Lagoon is at the forefront of carbon-positive materials: 35 percent biomaterial in the polyester resin (compared with 14 percent last year), with hemp fibers employed instead of glass in some of the smaller molded parts. The production plant is certified ISO 9001, 40001, 50001, which is notable for the commitment to sustainable manufacturing.”

Unlike McCormick, judge Mark Pillsbury liked the Lagoon’s helm station just fine. He said: “The 51 is a big boat, but the layout of the helm station on the flybridge makes the boat simple to operate with a shorthanded crew. All sail controls are led to three winches on the cabin top, and there is a Harken electric sidewinder winch adjacent to the wheel to control the traveler. And for a large cruising cat, I thought that the 51 sailed well. The steering was very smooth. In 8 to 12 knots of breeze, we saw boatspeeds in the high 6s and 7s depending on our point of sail. The view from the helm was tremendous.”

New catamarans: 2021’s most exciting launches

Yachting World

  • April 7, 2021

Fast cruising is the theme this year, say Toby Hodges and Sam Fortescue, who look at some of 2021's exciting new multihull launches

catamaran new cat f2

2021 looks set to be a bumper year for new catamarans as the trend for fast cruising yachts, which deliver plenty if living space continues. This year there are set to be several new catamarans on the market, here’s our selection of those about which we are most excited.

A group of wild enthusiasts in the landlocked Czech Republic are the force behind the new IC36 from Independent Catamaran. The debut model is a fully race-tuned cat that aims to appeal to speed freaks as well as performance cruisers. Oh, and it unbolts to fit inside a shipping container or on a trailer!

Perhaps closer in design terms to the Extreme 40 than a traditional cat, the IC36 has super narrow hulls, high displacement bows and an optional rotating carbon rig with composite stays.

A sporty-looking carbon beam braces the bows and doubles as a bowsprit for asymmetric sails. Deep daggerboards help windward performance, and there’s a racy dual carbon tiller providing direct rudder control.

“The first time I saw it, I just felt like it was from one of Jules Verne’s adventures,” says co-founder Jaromír Popek.

The boat has been optimised for electric propulsion with twin 6kW Oceanvolt saildrives and up to 15kWh of lithium-ion batteries giving a range of a couple of hours. Powerful hydrogeneration under sail keeps batteries topped up. For longer spells at anchor , there is also a decent 1.15kW array of Solbian solar panel s which folds away when not required.

As much fun as this boat should be to sail in its Raw racing variant, it is also available with more creature comforts.

The Pacer model has a coachroof, cockpit tent, more storage and cooking and freshwater systems. It can accommodate a reported eight people in the hulls, with a fridge and two-burner hob to port and a shower/heads to starboard. Or you can opt for a fridge and hob in the folding cockpit table.

Construction is in epoxy-glass composite with local Kevlar reinforcement and foam core, helping to keep weight down to less than 3 tonnes (key for trailering). And there are three buoyancy chambers in each hull, which underpin the claim that the boat is unsinkable.

For all the variants, the light weight and high-performance rig means you can sail in a breath of wind. In a blow, the sky should be the limit. Expect reaching speeds of 20 knots plus, particularly if you take the high-modulus carbon wing mast from Pauger.

Specifications:

This new launch from the world’s number one catamaran brand is the largest in the range of ‘regular’ boats, before entering the more luxurious world of the Lagoon 65.

It has been drawn by VPLP and Patrick le Quement, whose design nous has done much to make cats more mainstream. Many of the features, therefore, will be familiar from the smaller boats.

However, that extra length creates more volume below, so the Lagoon 55 can be arranged with up to six true double cabins with ensuite heads. “It’s the first time we have six cabins of the same size and function and a larger flybridge,” explains products developments manager Martina Torrini during a premiere virtual tour of the first model to launch in March.

Another first is the curving steps up from the transom skirt to the aft deck, dubbed ‘the stairway to heaven’. “The surfaces of the transom can be used differently,” adds Torrini. “Not just a way to access the boat, they become in themselves a living area.” This feature extends the size of the cockpit to 25m2, and even offers a plancha grill.

There’s more social space on the huge flybridge (with fridge and bar) and a movable sunpad on the forward part of the coachroof. The boat also features Lagoon’s first ever dedicated forward cockpit, connected to the saloon by a drop-down window.

A 107m2 fat-head main provides grunt, but is coupled with a self-tacking jib. As with all Lagoons, the emphasis is on comfort and ease of use rather than speed and windward pointing ability.

LOA: 16.56m / 54ft 4in Beam: 9.00m / 29ft 6in Draught: 1.55m / 5ft 1in Displacement: 26,500kg / 58,433lb Price: €tbc Builder: www.cata-lagoon.com

Fountaine Pajot Samana 59

Replacing the five-year-old Ipanema 58, this luxurious 59-footer integrates many of the new design features of the 45, which boasted longer, wider hulls that nevertheless showed 10% less drag. Chief among the new attractions is an enlarged cockpit, forward lounge and flybridge, for more socialising space.

“We wanted to emphasise her identity by optimising her interior and exterior spaces to make this 59ft catamaran the equivalent of a larger yacht,” explains designer Olivier Racoupeau.

“Whether it’s the flybridge, the cockpit or the saloon, we’ve worked hard to find harmony between all the living spaces on board, to gain every millimetre inside and outside.”

There’s a door forward out of the saloon, and the option of a hydraulic bathing platform, which doubles up for tender storage. Up to six cabins are offered, and the rare option of putting the galley up in the saloon or down to port. Hull number one is joining the World ARC .

Meanwhile, a new 51 is tipped for launch in 2022, which will focus on sustainability and have 2kW of flush solar panels built into the flybridge.

LOA: 18.21m / 59ft 9in Beam: 9.46m / 31ft 1in Draught: 1.40m / 4ft 7in Displacement: 25,500kg / 56,217lb Price ex VAT: €1,302,900 Builder: www.catamarans-fountaine-pajot.com

The new 42 replaces the Leopard 40, and it draws on the latest design thinking from the larger boats in the range. Like the award-winning Leopard 50, it has continuous hull windows, a hardtop, and contrasting coachroof accents. But it also goes further, with plumb bows and long horizontal chines.

That lounging space on the coachroof adds 65% to the exterior entertainment area. “By integrating the geometry of the lounge into the GRP hardtop, we were able to achieve a lightweight area that added less weight to the boat than one average sized crewmember,” explains Michael Robertson, chief designer at builder Robertson & Caine. It has been cleverly engineered so as not to steal headroom from the cockpit.

In contrast to many modern cats, the Leopard 42 makes a virtue of the separate cockpit and saloon, whose seating is focused on the forward galley. There is lots of glazing and a full-height door out onto the foredeck. Every cabin has a third more floor space and twice the glazed area of the old Leopard 40. Each has an island berth and its own heads with shower.

But it’s not all about space. “Performance potential remains one of the top priorities,” says naval architect Alex Simonis of Simonis-Voogd Yacht Design. “We spend a lot of time refining the rig geometry and the sail layout to boost the efficiency of the rig plan. At the same time, the ongoing refinement in hull and appendage design allows us to create a yacht with better sea motion and more agility.

LOA: 12.67m 41ft 7in Beam: 7.04m 23ft 1in Draught: 1.40m 4ft 7in Displacement: 12,460kg 27,469lb Price ex VAT: €399,000 Builder: www.leopardcatamarans.com

The new entry-level yacht from France’s Neel Trimarans is designed to bring the world of three hulls to a new clientele.

Building on the success of the larger Neel 47 and Neel 51, the 43 takes the fight to the catamaran, with a big superstructure that includes two double cabins as well as a galley and saloon.

There’s a further double cabin forward in the central nacelle, and cosy singles in either bow. A sliding door and window allows the saloon and the cockpit seating areas to be socially connected, although they remain two very different spaces.

The bulkhead helmstation to starboard has commanding views out over the huge coachroof. From the drawings, this appears to allow a tight sheeting angle for the genoa, but brings the mainsheet, which is fastened to the transom, close to the davits and skirt of the central hull.

The main is square-topped with two full battens and there is also a high-performance carbon spar option.

Though the lay-up is in standard foam-cored glassfibre, Neel says it is leaning towards more environmentally friendly construction. Interior joinery is from sustainable Alpi wood and recyclable material.

Marsaudon Composites has quietly built an enthusiastic following for its TS42 and TS50 catamarans since the smaller boat was launched six years ago.

That these have been the first boats to cross the Atlantic in the last two ARC s has also done its reputation no harm.

The yard is based at Lorient La Base, at the heart of the French offshore racing scene, so it’s perhaps no surprise these designs are lightweight and offer plenty of performance.

The direct tiller steering, which gives a responsive feel to the helm, is an example of the thinking that sets these boats apart from other multihulls and makes them sought after models. Yet they also have enough space both on deck and below to offer very comfortable living.

A 57-footer from the board of Marc Lombard will be the third design to join the stable. It shares the same hallmarks as the existing models, although a wheel steering option will also be offered.

In suitable conditions this is a cruising yacht that can be expected to hit speeds of well over 20 knots.

The hull shape is clearly a progression from the earlier models, while following the same light displacement principles with fine hull shapes. Lombard drew a new shape for the bows to increase efficiency and reduce the tendency for bow-down trim. He told us: “The bows are shaped so that, when the boat is powered up and starts to heel, the lee bow will generate extra lift to push the bow up.”

The additional size makes the interior spaces of this boat significantly larger than those of the 50-footer, especially in the hulls. Much thought has also gone into ergonomics and weight saving, stripping out and simplifying anything that is not essential. CEO Damien Cailliau likes to draw on a quote from Colin Chapman, founder of Lotus Cars: “Simplify, then add lightness.”

As an example, there are no hull linings, which saves weight and complication, but requires extremely neat moulding. “A core competency of Marsaudon Composites is that we produce excellent mouldings,” says Cailliau, “so we don’t need to hide our work.”

Seawind 1260: Lightweight catamaran making waves on both sides of the Atlantic

The Seawind 1260 has been well received in the States, where the brand has a strong following, but these multihulls…

As a low volume builder – only 28 of the smaller boats have been built in total – Marsaudon Composites can offer semi-custom interior arrangements, providing they don’t add unnecessary weight. The boat can also be built with varying amounts of carbon to reduce displacement further.

At the same time as announcing this design Marsaudon launched a rebranding of the range, which will now be known as Ocean Rider Catamarans (or ORC). The new name is a better fit with the qualities with which owners identify than the Très Simple concept that led to the original TS designation.

To underscore the difference between these boats and the majority of catamarans in this size range a tiller has been incorporated in the logo.

Tooling for the ORC 57 is under construction and the first boat is scheduled to be unveiled in September 2021.

Current Marine CM46 & CM52

The founder of RS Sailing , Martin Wadhams, is a racing sailor who now spends more and more time cruising.

Martin and his wife, Amanda, enjoy sailing fast boats and have spent some time looking to upgrade from their Pogo 12.50 to a multihull. Their search for a true performance cruising catamaran – and one that wouldn’t cost seven figures – turned out few viable options.

Australian-based designer Jeff Shionning put them onto some fresh designs he has done for Current Marine, a new South African brand formed from an experienced team of composites experts at Knysna, between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth on the south coast.

It has been set up to build the new CM46 and CM52 in low-volume semi-custom production. On visiting the yard a year ago, Wadhams was impressed enough with the high tech builds to order the second CM46.

He reports that the joinery is all laminated in, there is plenty of opportunity for layout customisation (in three or four cabins) and, owing to the lower labour costs in South Africa, pricing is keen.

Shionning’s CM designs are lightweight, efficient catamarans that should be able to sail well in light breeze and outrun weather systems in the open ocean.

Key features include daggerboards, fine bows, centralised weight of engines and tanks, and high bridgedeck clearance. The rig is also positioned amidships for optimum weight centralisation, while also helping to create a large foretriangle for flying a range of furling headsails. Aluminium or carbon spars and diesel or hybrid propulsion are offered.

Wadhams says there is good stowage space and payload capacity for comfortable liveaboard cruising. “They’re built using post-cured epoxy, carbon, E-Glass and PVC foam-cored laminates – a level above mainstream brands,” he insists. “This brings the construction found in a few larger, high-end boats into smaller-size catamarans.” The first CM46 is a full carbon racing version destined for an Auckland-based owner and is due to launch early 2021. The second boat (for Wadhams) has a more cruising-oriented spec.

Seawind 1370

Is this the most popular new design of 2021? Although the first of this new 45ft model is not due to launch until later in the autumn, there has already been a phenomenal uptake in orders.

Publicity has been helped by vloggers Sailing Ruby Rose ordering one of the first boats, but a staggering 55 have been sold already. This has led to the Australian/Vietnamese yard establishing a new technical department that is separate from the production department.

European sales manager Jay Nolan says this 13-strong team is tasked with working up every system on the boat and looking at hybrid solutions.

Outremer 55

A contemporary fast cat set up for short-handed world cruising, Outremer’s exciting new 55 launches this winter.

We previewed this VPLP design in our September issue and hope to test it during the spring. Much focus has been placed on weight and stiffness to help increase performance and ensure the boat can sail in the lightest breezes and therefore rarely need engine power.

New American Eagle, ACL’s Coastal Catamaran, Sets Sail!

It’s official! American Cruise Lines’ (ACL) new 100-passenger American Eagle , the first “ Coastal  Cat ” (a high-tech, innovative catamaran) was delivered on time and has successfully completed sea trials.

Signaling the start of an exciting new era for ACL, American Eagle is first in a series of 12 Coastal Cats . In an incredibly fast-paced timeline, the next four sister catamarans are already under construction. They’ll all be hitting the water within the next year.

(Photo above of American Eagle and those below of public spaces and accommodations are all by American Cruises Lines.)

American Eagle : Nod to the Past, Look to the Future

Did you know that the new American Eagle is the namesake of ACL’s first vessel in 1972? It’s true. But while that’s a nod to ACL’s history, clearly the small-ship line is looking to the future with this new class of small ship.

We can’t wait to see it! The Meandering Traveler previously wrote about the start of the Coastal Cat project in a 2022 blog . Designed with versatility in mind, these ships will sail along American rivers, traverse the Great Lakes and navigate along North American coastal ocean waters.

New Ship Class, Built in America

Built by ACL’s affiliated company, Chesapeake Shipyard , in  S alisbury, MD, the American-flagged vessel is currently en route to  Massachusetts to begin service.

“ American Eagle embodies our continued commitment to building new small ships to explore America’s rivers and coasts,” says   Charles B. Robertson , ACL’s president and CEO.  “It’s the flagship in American Cruise Lines’ new series of small Coastal Cats, which are unlike anything else available in the U.S. market.”

He believes that “ American Eagle and her sister ships will change the landscape of possibilities for small ship adventures around the U.S.A.” ACL’s press release launch announcement says that they’ll “blend the luxury of river cruising with the access and adventure of expedition cruising.”

For instance, guests can relax in one of the ship’s observation areas or on their own private balcony to admire scenic vistas. Alternatively, if they’re feeling adventurous, a unique Swim/Activity Platform at the ship’s stern features kayaks and a tender for local exploration.

In this blog, we’ve provided a number of photographs, Our goal is to help readers see the look of American Eagle’s new public spaces and accommodations. Want to see more? Check out ACL’s  “virtual ship tour” about the new Coastal Cats.

Inaugural Cruise and Voyages Beyond

On August 14, 2023, American Eagle will sail an inaugural cruise roundtrip from Boston.  Now sold out, that voyage is ACL’s popular “ Cape Codder Cruise ” itinerary.

In addition, the vessel sails the same seven-night itinerary on A ugust 21, 2023, with very limited availability; at press time, those fares began at $7,495 per person, double occupancy. Another Cape Codder option is on August 28, 2023, but that’s sold out too.

Our suggestion? If you want to sail on the new “Coastal Cat,” your best bet is to look at all of its East Coast 2023 and 2024 voyages. Those embark guests at many U.S. ports along the Eastern Seaboard. Here’s a link to American Eagle’s schedule of upcoming itineraries.

American Eagle : East Coast Explorer

Later this fall and in winter 2023-2024, guests can embark on multiple itineraries to explore the U.S. South. Those coastal journeys depart from Baltimore, MD, Charleston, SC, or Jacksonville/Amelia Island, FL.

Then, during June 2024 and again in September 2024, American Eagle will sail Hudson River voyages roundtrip from New York City. At press time, the June voyages started at $7,110 per person, double occupancy, while the fall foliage cruises started at $7,745 per person, double occupancy.

What’s special? “Guests will venture ashore at such storied Hudson River destinations as Sleepy Hollow, Hyde Park, West Point, Kingston, Catskill, Albany and Troy, NY,” says Shelby Steudle , president, Pavlus Travel .

A ccommodating just 100 guests,  American Eagle  features four decks, and showcases a new catamaran bow. Inside, American Eagle and the other new Coastal Cats will reflect interior design by Miami’s Studio DADO.

Look for design that’s contemporary, elegant and welcoming, with soft tones and pops of color. Accommodations feature private balcony accommodations. Guests can choose from spacious single and double occupancy staterooms as well as suites.

Coming Soon!

This year, ACL will operate a total of 17 ships, each accommodating just 90-180 passengers. On all, guests have great opportunities to discover U.S. history and culture.

These riverboats and small ships cruise to more than 50 domestic itineraries in 35 states. It’s also good to know that ACL offers flat-rate domestic airfare for all U.S. cruises. Plus, guests receive complimentary pre-cruise hotel stays in cities across the country.

Coming soon? In November 2023, the company plans to introduce American Glory, its second new Coastal Cat. Here’s the link to the website page with itineraries for American Glory .

World Cat Reveals All-New 260CC-X at FLIBS

2023 World Cat 260CC-X

North Carolina's World Cat Catamarans continues their upswing with several big announcements for 2023. Not only will the company be celebrating their 25th anniversary throughout the year, the world's largest builder of power catamarans also unveiled the all-new 260CC-X at the recent Florida International Boat Show.

The announcement comes on the heels of several upgrades for the reputable manufacturer, including their a large expansion to their manufacturing facility in July of 2021.

Initial details for the all-new 260CC-X first came out in April, but the recent FLIBS event gave potential buyers and enthusiasts the first chance to check out the new model in person. The new boat is now in production and available for order and purchase.

The new 260CC-X will boast an LOA of 25'6" with a 9' beam and 14" draft, giving owners the ability to fish inshore as well as having the performance, stability and safety offshore that World Cat models are known for.

The 260CC-X will mark the sixth model in the company's center console lineup. It features a standard wrap around U-lounge bow seating area with a self-storing bow filler and casting deck, side console vertical rod storage, an integrated powder coated aluminum frame and windshield system with manual forward vent and a fiberglass T-top featuring two LED spreader lights, and four LED recessed lights and red/white helm lights.

Also standard on the 260CC-X is a unique full transom with a fold-down 50” bench seat that converts to a flush, aft casting deck. She will feature a 30 gallon (113 L) livewell and 10 gallons (38 L) of freshwater capacity.

“When designing the 260CC-X we knew there was a market need within our own model offering for this new 260CC-X, but we also wanted this model to showcase the innovation World Cat is known for,” said World Cat Vice President of Sales & Marketing Chad Armstrong. “With the popularity of our “X” hulls over the years, initially debuted with our 28’ center and dual console models, we maintained the hull design for optimum performance and styling while loading the model with features topside. The convertible transom bench, combined with the rod holders in the gunwale and side console, fish boxes, livewell, tackle storage, as well as the leaning post with rocket launchers and 65-quart Yeti cooler also showcase the all-around fishability of this model. We are extremely excited for all that this new model has to offer.”

(Click below to view virtual tour of the new 260CC-X)

Optional features will include a T-top mounted LED forward light bar, removable/fold-away bow-seating backrests, quick release fender holders, an electric marine head with an eight-gallon holding tank and overboard discharge, T-top rocket launchers with a ski tow frame upgrade and a RGB light upgrade including courtesy, hardtop, cockpit, under gunwale, console accent and UW lights and speakers.

This New 65-Foot Catamaran Is Like a Luxe Villa on the High Seas, and We Took It for a Spin

Prestige Yachts, the luxury cat brand in Group Beneteau's boat-building powerhouse, reckons that its new 65-foot flagship M8 has the space of an 85-foot monohull motoryacht.

We reckon it has way more.

Take the owner's suite. Spanning the M8's entire 29-foot beam, it features an oversize bedroom, an adjoining den, a walk-in closet, and a bathroom worthy of a luxury hotel. And there are four other cabins aboard that are almost as spacious.

In total, there's 3,000 square feet of living space, with huge outdoor decks front and rear, a salon that wouldn't look out of place in a hip Miami penthouse, and a beach club with a cantilevering dive platform.

"The aim was to create a true villa on the sea. We tried everything possible to make it not feel like a traditional boat," Erwin Bamps, Prestige VP told Robb Report during our sea trial before the M8's U.S. premiere at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) .

This M8 follows in the wake of Prestige's M48, launched a year ago, in what will eventually be a full range of M-Line power cats penned by long-time Prestige designer Camillo Garonni. For now, this 65-footer, being built at Groupe Beneteau Italia's Montfalcone yard, is the new flagship.

It looks truly massive tied to a Bahia Mar marina dock in Fort Lauderdale. Typical power cats often have the boxy appearance of a sailing catamaran, minus the mast. But Garonni has delivered a sleekness to the lines, with tall hull sides and an ax-bow design, balanced by a glass-filled superstructure with a raked, wraparound front screen.

Steps on each side of the aft platform lead into the expansive rear cockpit. Stroll around the wide, and reassuringly tall, side decks up to the bow, and you'll find one of the M8's coolest features: a two-level foredeck. The upper section features a giant sunpad, while up at the bow, you step down into a "conversation pit" with facing sofas and seating for 10.

Back in the rear cockpit, sliding doors lead into the unusually large salon-thanks to the cat's 29-foot beam. The beauty here is that everything is on one level, adding to the feeling of space.

The "villa on the sea" concept is heightened by all the ultra-modern, free-standing, modular furniture by Italy's Pininfarina. In this first hull, there's a Miami Beach vibe with cool shades of ice blue, cream and soft gray.

On the flybridge, the helm and companion seats are positioned side by side, with unobstructed, 360-degree visibility. We settle into the helm seat, throw off the lines, head from the marina into the busy Intracoastal Waterway and out into the Atlantic to see how the M8 performs.

The vessel is powered by a pair of 600 hp Volvo D8 turbodiesels-one in each hull-made quieter by sound-deadening materials. The thinking here is comfort, not so much speed, though its top speed of 20 knots is hardly lethargic.

These twin pontoons are not planing hulls, nor are the Volvos especially powerful for this size yacht. But the slender, vertical bows slice easily through the waves, with the cat's broad beam providing good stability.

At 17 knots, the engines are barely audible and burning less than 45 gallons per hour-impressive for a 54-ton cruiser. Throttle back to a more sedate eight knots, and the burn rate is just five gallons an hour. With twin 490-gallon tanks, the M8 at cruise speed will run over 350 nautical miles between fill-ups.

Thanks to the catamaran design, the M8 made tight turns without a hint of roll, and any waves or wakes from other boats felt minimal with its high-running sponsons. The M8 has a Category A certification for seaworthiness, and it shows.

The new Prestige will retail for around $5.2 million as a base boat, or $6.2 million nicely loaded. If you love the idea of all that space, Prestige will happily sell hull number one. Just ask for the boat show "Special."

Fiche technique complète du voilier Catamaran de sport New Cat F2 de 1989, le chantier et beaucoup d'autres caractéristiques du bateau. ... Tecnomar, a brand of The Italian Sea Group (TISG) has released additional details on its new 40.7-metre catamaran, the Cat 133.. The shipyard claims that the catamaran benefits from "the same visionary and futuristic design" of the 43.5-metre This Is It. This includes a focus on energy efficiency, with 70 square metres of solar panels installed along the yacht's superstructure arches and hardtop.

Another highlight of Cat 133 is the stern: Two hulls, two internal wings, and two foldable side doors come together to create a swimming platform that is about 52 feet wide when fully opened.

The F1 (Formula 1) is sailed with mainsail only. The F2 has a main and jib. Sails have two versions. Classic cut and Streamcut mainsail (square head/radical cut) (specs above are based on the Streamcut F2 version) The F1/F2 Classic main area: 11.9 m² / 128 ft². The F1/F2 Streamcut main area: 12.5 m² / 134.55 ft².

NEW YORK (AP) — A man was arrested Thursday for allegedly taking a decommissioned New York City fireboat for an overnight cruise on the Hudson River, before becoming stuck, jumping ship and stealing another vessel, police said.

He was charged with two counts of grand larceny, officials said. He had not been arraigned as of Thursday afternoon and it was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer.

The man commandeered the fireboat, known as the John J. Harvey, by untying it from its mooring at Pier 66 off the west side of Manhattan, according to authorities. The 130 foot (40 meter) long vessel, which now serves as a museum, earned local acclaim after it was used to evacuate survivors of 9/11.

Once aboard the fireboat, the man was able to drift a short distance into the Hudson River, police said, but quickly got stuck. He leapt overboard, plunging into the frigid waters and later emerging on a second stolen vessel, according to police.

He navigated that sailboat toward Pier 51, roughly 15 blocks south of the original location, police said. The department’s Harbor Unit responded to a 2:30 a.m. call about a stolen boat and arrested the man on the sailboat’s deck.

On Friday, April 19, 2024, The Associated Press reported on stories circulating online incorrectly claiming Merchan told former President Donald Trump on the first day of his hush money case that he can’t attend his son Barron’s May 17 high school graduation because he must be in court that day. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig, File)

A spokesperson for the Hudson River Park Trust, which oversees Pier 66, said the fireboat is secure and being assessed for damage.

Built in 1931, the Harvey assisted in several dramatic marine rescues, helping to put out a potentially catastrophic fire aboard the El Estero, a munitions ship docked in the New York Harbor during World War II.

It was retired in 1994, but was called back into service on the morning of 9/11 to help pick up survivors and to pump water onto the site.

The boat’s caretakers offer occasional free public cruises along the Hudson River.
