Basic Bicycle Anatomy 101 - Brake Systems

T here are many different types of brakes. However, we are only going to cover the 4 most common. Below each type shown here we will describe the very basic pros, cons, and uses for each type of brake.

trek brake parts

Caliper Brake

The caliper brake is probably the MOST common type of brake on bicycles. It is strong, sleek, dependable and simple. It is a rim brake since the way it works is by clamping down on the metal rim. It is the standard on almost all road bikes and most youth bikes.

trek brake parts

Cantilever Brakes

Cantilever brakes are far more powerful than caliper brakes. Although a little less aero-dynamic. These are most commonly used on "cyclo-cross" bikes. These bikes are either set up for or designed for cyclo-cross racing which is where one uses a road style bike to race across light-off-road terrain. Cyclo-cross bikes have a great need for a more powerful brake than what standard caliper brakes can provide. A special fork is required to mount these brakes to a road-style bicycle.

trek brake parts

V Brakes are the most common term for this style of brake. Shimano actually named these and other brake companies label them "linear-pull" or "direct-pull" brakes. These brakes are extremely powerful. They are most common on mountain and off-road bikes. They have the power to slow and stop a wet or even muddy wheel making them ideal for off-road use. They are a little heavier than either Cantilever or Caliper brakes. These brakes are a "rim brake" style of brake and they require frame/fork mounts to be attached to a bike.

trek brake parts

Disc Brakes

Disc brakes are more powerful than V-brakes and require less hand strength to operate. They are heavier though. They are not a "rim-brake" as they do not clamp the rim but rather to a hub-fixed "rotor". Disc brakes require a compatible hub, wheel rim, and frame/fork. Disc brakes come in two different styles, Hydraulic or Mechanical cable-pull (mechanical cable-pull shown in diagram above) These brakes are great for fast descents on off-road trails. They can handle high heat without damaging the tire by heating up the rim as "rim-brakes" do. We are talking about descents like 65 mile per hour for 20 minutes straight with many turns. Disc brakes are completely immune to trail debris, water, and mud. If a rider runs through a creek deep enough to get the rotor wet/muddy the hard pads will sheer the water and mud off the rotor immediately with their phenomenal strength and pressure. All rim brakes with their rubber pads have a tendency to harbor dust, sand, or mud in the (comparatively) softer rubber pads making their performance somewhat delayed in a high speed situation. Simply put, Disc brakes are stronger, more dependable in dirty environments, and are immune to heat (from friction caused by use).

Customer Reviews

We purchased the NCM Moscow 29 E bike from Leon Cycles earlier this month. Communication was via 'Whatsapp' which I initially thought a little odd but worked out well. Once communication established the transaction was completed quickly and easily. We were able to arrange for the team to assemble the bike for us and we picked it up from the warehouse without an issue. We love the bike and are continuing to find new places to discover using it. Competitive price and great service.

I ordered the bike 4 days ago and today it arrived. Now my first impressions: it is easy to assemble, looks great, is cleanly finished and after a first short driving test I have to say, the hammer. It's totally easy to drive. If it stays that way, I can only say thank you Leon Cycle. Now I can cycle again, despite knee problems. Price-performance top

Great bike, this is my second e bike and by far the best. Watching e bikes over the last 10 years I think the Moscow 29er is fantastic. I live in the Dandenongs outside Melbourne with big steep hills and the Moscow takes them all on with great pulling power and gear range. 48v with 16 amps means over 750 watts of power. The bike is big and serious so getting on and off can be tricky but you do get used to it. With the previous bike (36v at 8amps) I was scared of running out of battery on a big hill and having to push the bike home but not with the Moscow. Also if you take the front wheel off you can get it in a hatchback like my Mazda 3 Which is nice. At $2200 it is a great buy.

Purchased two Moscow 27.5. One for my wife, one for me. Fast delivery, well boxed and easy assembly. Absolutely FANTASTIC to ride and use. Great range, and enough power for steep hills and tough terrain. I highly recommend them. Exactly as advertised and brochure. Looked at many options from other suppliers but these are the best value for money. If anyone wants a little extra range and a few more features then a Moscow Plus may suit. 48 Volt is the way to go. Great support and assistance from the team at Leon to make the right purchase decision. Hope other people may enjoy the ride and quality product. Harry G

I bought an NCM Moscow a year ago and absolutely love it - seriously the best thing I've ever bought. It's brilliant. Has never failed getting me hills on roads, however steep! Power delivery is smooth, range fabulous. have now bought a 2nd one for my wife. My latest purchase from Leon is replacement brake pads - I recommend you buy these elsewhere as they are supplied without a spring or clip. Can buy them anywhere else at similar cost and these parts come with them (which is kinda handy as can't really replace the pads without). I'm still giving 5 stars as I love my bike!

Custom hybrid shifters and prototype tyres: Elisa Balsamo's Classics setup

E lisa Balsamo has already been on the podium eight times in 2024, racking up wins in Spain, Italy, and Belgium so far this year. But while the Lidl-Trek rider has access to Trek’s full complement of race bikes, all of her victories this year have been taken aboard her Trek Madone SLR .

Of course, with the recent rumors of a new SRAM groupset circulating over the last few months, we were particularly intrigued by her non-standard levers on her team bike when we got our hands on it before the start of Omloop Het Nieuwsblad . But mechanics explained to us that these were not new or unreleased parts, but instead custom levers used by Balsamo and several other riders.

The shifters in question, feature a much smaller diameter design than the current SRAM Red levers and look remarkably similar to the current generation SRAM Apex AXS brake levers, but with some crucial differences.

A team mechanic at Lidl-Trek women's team told Cycling Weekly that the Apex AXS-shaped levers feature a stripped-down design with a lighter-weight carbon fiber brake lever blade. Reportedly, the reason behind this was rider comfort. SRAM Red AXS levers have long been known for their larger hood design, which has been relatively polarizing. Balsamo's levers then offer an alternative, a hybrid taking the best shifter design of SRAM’s current smaller lever hoods, and combining it with the lightest weight parts available.

The rest of Balsamo’s groupset is a much more standard affair, though some interesting gearing choices were made for the Classics season. Balsamo rides a larger 52/39 chainset up front.

Once upon a time, this would be a ‘semi-compact’ chainset, but with Sram’s smaller 10t sprocket at the rear, this setup allows for the equivalent of running a 56t chainring with an 11-speed rear sprocket.

The cassette in question has a wider range 10-32, which allows Balsamo to have a large gear range for the super steep Belgian bergs without sacrificing top-end speed.

Another component on the Lidl-Trek bikes that has been causing quite the stir is the unreleased Pirelli tires marked as ‘prototype’. So far, the prototype tires have already been ridden to victory by Balsamo at the Classic Brugge-De Panne , but Pirelli has released no further details about them. The tires are fitted aboard a Bontrager Aeolus RSL 51 TLR disc wheelset, set up tubeless.

Besides WorldTour-only and prototype kit, the Lidl-Trek team mechanics have made a couple of smaller modifications to the former world champion’s bike for the Classics, most notably a bottle cage hack.

Small rubber O rings have been added to each side of Balsamo’s bottle cages, a move which the team hopes will reduce the chances of loosing bottles over the brutal bumps in races like Roubaix and Flanders.

Moscow parks – leisure, nature and historical

Moscow is the most green megapolis in the world. There are over a hundred parks and green spaces like gardens, squares and boulevards. You will definitely bump into a few of them wherever you go. Whether you are interested in memorial, historic parks, parks of wildlife or you just want to have a calm break from the speedy city life – city parks have something special for everyone.

The Gorky Park

The Gorky Park

Gorky Park opened in 1928 and was the first holiday park in the Soviet Union with playgrounds, a sports stadium, exhibition halls and attractions for kids. Today it has a fresh, vibrant appearance. The park features bike rental stations, a comfortable business area with Wi-Fi, an outdoor movie theatre and a greenhouse where you can buy fresh greens such as basil and lettuce. Enjoy many sports in the park: volleyball, handball, football or a peaceful jog around the beautiful surroundings.

Zaryadye Park

Aptekarsky Ogorod (Apothecary Garden) is one of the oldest gardens in Moscow. It was founded in the XVIII century by Peter the First (great Russian emperor). A larch that he planted himself still grows in the garden, so it’s more than 250 years old. At the time of its foundation, it was a garden with herbs and medicinal plants and was used as an educational center for doctors. Today there are the orangery with its tropical palms, the carp pond, and the immense trees that dot the landscape and turn wonderful golden shades in the autumn. Several restaurants and cafes work here making it a very nice spot for relaxation no matter what season it is. You can book a special tour or join the guided excursion group.

The layout of Serebryany Bor is unusual, as it is located on an artificial island between a meander in the Moscow River and a channel. There is an artificial lake, the Deep Gulf and picturesque Bezdonnoe (Bottomless) Lake in the depths of the forest. Serebryany Bor’s beaches are the cleanest in the city and very popular among Muscovites. On weekends it is difficult to find a free spot here, especially because a whole range of services are offered to visitors, from simple deckchairs to catamaran and yacht rides. Driving is prohibited on the territory of the island so be ready to use trolleybus to reach the entrance.

Botanichesky Sad

Greenhouse of Botanical Garden

Greenhouse of Botanical Garden

Main Botanical Garden of The Russian Academy of Sciences is the largest and most famous is Moscow. The garden is a real museum of nature with a very rich (more than 18000 types) collection of plants. The park was founded in 1945 at the place of the 17th century Apothecaries’ Gardens. The garden’s collection is turned into botanical expositions, made with use of modern receptions of landscape architecture. Here you can see a tree nursery, a shadow garden, hothouse complex, collection of flowers, a rosary, exposition of coastal plants, garden of continuous blossoming, Japanese garden and expositions of cultural plants and natural flora plants. The biggest part of Garden is the Tree nursery occupying the space of 75 hectares. About 2 thousand wood plants grow here. Another big exposition of the Garden is nature Flora, divided into six botanic-geographical collections: European part of Russia, Caucuses, Central Asia, Siberia and Far East. It is especially decorative in spring, during Oriental cherry blossoming and in fall, when foliage blazes in crimson colors.

Moscow historic parks

Historic nature parks and estates once were the mansions of the Moscow aristocracy. At that far times the estates were outside the Moscow city limits, but after the city expansion and urbanization, they became easily accessible.

Kolomenskoye

Kolomenskoe

Kolomenskoye Museum and Park

The chief attraction of the park is undoubtedly the stone Church of the Ascension of the Lord. It was constructed in 1532 by order of Tsar Vasily III to commemorate the birth of his son and heir, Ivan the Terrible. But there is a lot more to see in the park: the pretty Church of the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan – with its bright azure domes and plenty of gold. Further into the park there is a charming Church of the Beheading of St John the Baptist, built by Ivan the Terrible to mark his coronation.

Kuskovo

Kuskovo Park

Kuskovo Park is one of the oldest country estates in Moscow. It was given to General Sheremetev by Peter the Great in 1715, but was left to fall into neglect before being plundered by Napoleon’s troops in 1812. Nowadays the estate has been restored to its former glory and is a good example of Russian 18th Century imperial architecture. The palace is a fine and rare example of wooden neoclassicism. It was completed in 1775, and the rich interiors remain unchanged since 1779. It includes a room hung with exclusive exquisite Flemish tapestries, an abundance of silk wallpaper and an impressive collection of 18th century European and Russian paintings. The palace looks onto the lake, which is surrounded by smaller pavilions: pretty Italian, Dutch and Swiss Cottages, Blank’s Hermitage and the old Orangery, where the State Ceramics Museum is located now, an extensive and absorbing collection of porcelain from the 18th century to the present day. On the other side of the lake is a large wood popular with local cyclists and joggers.
