VIDEO: Watching the Magic Happen at the Beretta Factory in Tennessee

Beretta Factory

Beretta, of course, needs no introduction here. Nor does the company’s commitment to the U.S. military . The Beretta M9, since its adoption in 1985, has served as America’s military sidearm. Ballistic went behind the scenes recently at the new Beretta factory to to see the magic happen firsthand.

In conjunction with that pivotal contract, Beretta USA setup shop in Accokeek, Maryland, where it produced U.S. military M9s, 92s for the civilian market and more. Then in 2014, in response to Maryland’s passage of the state’s Firearm Safety Act of 2013, which included restrictive prohibitions against firearm manufacturing, Beretta announced it was moving all U.S.-based manufacturing to Gallatin, Tennessee.

Beretta Factory Opens in Tennessee

On April 15, 2016, Beretta officially opened its manufacturing facility in Gallatin. Beretta family members from Italy and Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam were also among those in attendance.

“The state of Tennessee was extremely excited to have Beretta move to the state,” Allen said. “The citizens of Gallatin are very excited and proud to have the company locally. The entire state is 2A friendly, and our governor and state legislature actively recruit firearm and munitions companies to the state.”

As Mark Wahlberg’s character Bob Lee Swagger says famously in the movie “Shooter,” “Welcome to Tennessee, the patron state of shootin’ stuff.”

Beretta USA’s new Gallatin facility is as impressive as they come. With a 156,000-square-foot building set upon 100 acres, Beretta is immediately capable, yet also poised for future growth. With 300 employees drawn from a local community proud to have the iconic gunmaker as their own, the future is certainly bright.

“The plant tour was exceptional, and the facility is first class,” Allen said. “Beretta has just begun to tap into their capabilities and they have capacity for future growth, right here in Tennessee. The state is very welcoming and strongly supports the 2nd Amendment. The people of Tennessee still have the roots of the likes of Davy Crockett, Sam Houston and Andrew Jackson. Our freedom and independence are important, and our state government represents those values. The Beretta team is incredible, and their family roots going back to the 1500’s are beyond impressive. The personal pride the leadership and employees take in their business is top-notch.”

A Glimpse Inside the Beretta USA Factory

Last month I attended the Beretta APX A1 Media Event in Nashville, Tennessee. We spent a morning at the range, learning about APX A1 and of course shooting it. Later though, after a delicious barbecue lunch (with banana pudding for dessert), we hopped on a bus and made our way to the Beretta USA Factory in Gallatin, Tennessee.

Sponsored by Beretta USA

As I walked into the lobby, I immediately thought, “This is a place I’d like to hang out.” The welcoming atmosphere, with all the displays to peruse and comfy chairs, made it a nice first stop on our tour.

Beretta Golden Shovel

I’ve had the opportunity to visit other factories in the firearms industry and honestly, this is the cleanest building I’ve ever toured. I’m not sure if it’s like at my house when someone mentions he’s stopping by and there is a quick scramble to pick everything up and wipe off counters … but, this place appeared immaculate and brightly lit.

Although a small part of the tour,  the first hallway we walked through really impressed me, as it showcased displays of Beretta history. A photo of the Beretta Trident Logo dominates the wall space, with this motto – “Dare in Brocca” (Hit the Bullseye). A plaque above the photograph reads, “While visiting the residence of poet Gabriele D’Annunzio in the early 1920s, Pier Giuseppe Beretta stumbled across a marble carving in the gardens of the ‘Vittoriale’ estate. The symbol impressed Beretta, who Pier Giuseppe was impressed by this symbol and saw it as the perfect example of the perfection he demanded for everything made at the Beretta factory, and which became the inspiration for the Beretta Trident logo of today.”

Beretta Trident

In the video, I mentioned the Chevy Beretta automobile on display. Fabbrica d’Armi Pietro Beretta sued General Motors for trademark infringement involving their use of the Beretta name for a car. In 1989, the suit was settled out of court. Consequently, Beretta and GM exchanged symbolic gifts: a Beretta GTU coupe and a Beretta hunting rifle and shotgun. General Motors also donated $500,000 to a Beretta-sponsored charity. As for the rest of the story, let’s just say it wasn’t so much about the money, it was more about the principle of the lawsuit.

Chevy Beretta Car

The tour allowed me to watch the various steps involved in the building firearms. I enjoyed watching some of the hands-on work with the various parts, as well as seeing robots polishing and cutting. It’s amazing how it all comes together with a final finished firearm in the end.

Tomcat Slides

I am the first to admit that I’m extremely fortunate and live a blessed life. Having the opportunity to attend this event and shoot the Beretta APX A1 before it was released, then tour the Beretta USA factory, is cool. Heck, maybe someday I’ll make it to Italy to visit the factory there.

Beretta USA Factory Tour And A Seriously Stunning Picatinny Rail Concept

Military Arms Channel (MAC) visited the Beretta USA facility in 2015. To be honest, I really didn’t expect anything surprising because three years had passed and Beretta really hasn’t done anything of interest to me for years and years. Well, that changed in this video at the 10:12 mark but let’s not jump ahead.

MAC got a good tour with tons of photos of the M9 service pistol, notably the M9A3 with its Picatinny rail and other updates. You get a chance to see some automation but also considerable handwork. When I watched the video on Beretta’s Gordonne, Val Trompia,Italy, facility , there seemed to be much more automation.

Regardless, it was interesting to watch purely from a manufacturing perspective. Nothing really noteworthy to be completely honest – just another factory … and then the video kept going on and knocked my socks off…

beretta usa factory tour

The Picatinny Rail as a Platform

Now this is where I need to point out that my jaw dropped starting at about the 10:12 mark. If you have been around weapons in recent years, you are probably very used to seeing the Picatinny rails on weapons for mounting accessories. Historically, firms would have proprietary means for adding accessories and this would limit your ability to find devices that could be mounted and your ability to move them from weapon to weapon.

MIL-STD-1913 was published by the Picatinny Arsenal in 1995 and finally created a standardized solution. This enabled all the different light, lasers, optics, mounting points and more to have a standard way to connect to the weapon.

So, let’s come back to the video. Beretta realized that the rail can be far more than a dumb mounting point. It can be a backplane that enables both shared power and data. I really had a “holy cow that makes so much sense moment.”

No more different battery types or some full and some not. You can attach to the rail and the device taps in via exposed connectors for power and data services. Beyond the battery, you could, for example, have a laser designator and range finder providing data to an optic and uplink all modularly.

beretta usa factory tour

I like the idea of a hard wired connection vs wireless that can be compromised or outright blocked. As more and more electronics show up on small arms, engineers will need to figure out how to make them both reliable, resistant to electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) and secure and that last part I am referring to information security.

Bottom line, kudo to Beretta. They thought of this over three years ago!! I think we are seeing a future direction for the industry here if it can leap frog from Beretta and get some other big players behind it notably Magpul and other DoD suppliers.

Here’s the Video
