Interviews with rock legends since 1982

Iron Maiden plays Vancouver on the Powerslave tour, Dave Murray talks to the Newt

worldslaverytour11

By Steve Newton

On December 9, 1984, Iron Maiden played the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver–with Twisted Sister opening up! Not only that, but the paper put my interview with the British metal legends on the front page, featuring a totally rockin’ live photo by famed Vancouver photographer Bev Davies.

I hadn’t been so proud of my non-award-winning accomplishments in journalism since scoring the prestigious Ozzy cover back in June of ’82!

Maiden was touring behind its  Powerslave  album—the one with “Two Minutes to Midnight” and “Aces High”—so you know that can’t be bad.

In advance of the show I interviewed guitarist Dave Murray on the phone from Toronto, and this is what went down.

How’s the tour been going so far?

Well, we just finished a European tour with Motley Crue , and that went very well actually. They’re a good bunch of lads and all, so we had a jolly good time there.

What was it like playing behind the Iron Curtain earlier on this year?

Well that was a great experience. We did ten shows there, all together, and the reaction from the kids was superb. It’s so rare that you get bands going over there.

I saw on the TV news a couple of months back that you really caused a stir in Poland. Why do you suppose they go so wild for heavy metal over there?

Well for one thing you can’t buy records over there much, which is a drag. You have to get people to send you albums. They’re pretty much suppressed when it comes to music, so when they do get a concert it’s incredible. They were saying that it’s probably the first—and maybe the last—rock concert they’ll ever see. So it was really emotional in a way.

I understand the guards were even throwing their jackets around and going wild.

That’s right, yeah. Because there was a riot squad, they had strict security, and by the end of the show they were doing that—jumping up and down. We’ve got quite a collection of police hats at the moment, you know, which we’re gonna auction off at the next gig.

Was it difficult to get clearance to play there?

Well I’m not sure exactly how we got over there really—it was done through our agency, you know. We just got our visas and everything. Actually, they gave us a great welcome when we got there. There were all these soldiers at the airport, because quite a few fans turned up. And a TV station turned up. It was great.

Are you going back?

Well you never know. We might go back in 1986. But we filmed everything for a documentary when we were over there. It went out on MTV about a month ago. So hopefully we might have opened the doors now for more bands.

You’ve also played places like Japan and Australia.

Yeah, we’ve been to Japan twice and Australia once.

How do the metal audiences differ from, say, Japan to Australia?

Well in Japan the audience is like 95 percent female. And they’re very polite. They come to the concert, and they’re not allowed to get up in their seats, so they all sit down. I mean it’s all girls, right, and they just…you know, it’s great! And in Australia there’s the hardcore heavy metal fans, who are pretty much the same all over the world. They’ve got their own fashion—they all dress the same with denim jackets and patches.

“Two Minutes to Midnight” is my favourite song on the new album, but its images are pretty grisly. Do you get much flack for making music that deals with death and destruction?

No, we’ve probably only written a couple of songs about that. Bruce wrote the lyrics to that, and apparently it’s about the doomsday clock—when it strikes midnight it’s like the end of the world. It’s probably something that he feels strongly about, you know, and it’s good that he can express it through writing the lyrics.

How did you come to do a song based on “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner”?

Well Steve has always been interested in English literature and all that. It’s a Coleridge poem, and it’s about a hundred pages long, so Steve sat down and read it and interpreted it in his own way. He actually wrote the song when we were recording the album in the Bahamas. I remember when he first came out with the lyrics—there were pages and pages of them.

And it’s good because we don’t really stick by the mainstream and just write three-minute songs. From each album we’ve had a song which is maybe eight or nine minutes—like on  Piece of Mind  it was “To Tame the Land”. We like to make big songs, like a short story really, and try to make them as interesting as possible.

The instrumental on  Powerslave , “Losfer Words (Big ‘Orra)”, sounds pretty complicated. Was it a hard one to play?

Not really. Steve came up with that song, and it worked out really well actually. I think probably the hardest song to record on the album was “The Mariner”, because it was the only one actually written in the studio. Steve and Nicko put the bass and drums down, then me and Adrian would come in with the guitars–we were actually in there learning it as it was comin’ along. But it was great fun because it kept us on our toes.

What’s your Egyptian stage like?

Well I haven’t seen this one actually, ’cause we’ve got two stage sets—one for Europe and one for America because the stage is a lot bigger over here. So we’ve built up on it, brought over more lights and more P.A. But the whole stage set, from out front, gives you the impression of looking into a tomb. We’ve got like the jackals there, and there’s a hieroglyph and mummies and stuff like that. And the actual backdrop is like three-dimensional, the way you can look at it.

Does Eddy [the band’s horrendous mascot] make an appearance on stage this time around?

Yeah he does actually [chuckles], in more ways than one. ‘Cause we killed him off on the last tour, you know, and we brought him back to life again. He’s sort of back as a mummy.

In your Capital Records bio it says that you’ve got something like 120,000 watts of P.A. Do you really need that much?

Well we won’t be using it at full volume, it’s just that with that amount of equipment we can actually get a better sound, so everything’s gonna be clear. We try and get the effect of having like a huge stereo. But it won’t be earbending, you know.

Who do you like listening to in your spare time?

Well I listen to a lot of stuff like Purple and that. And Jethro Tull , Genesis .

Have there been any new artists that have blown you away lately?

Umm…well I like Stevie Ray Vaughan actually. I love his guitar playing. And we went to see a band called Queensyrche ; I thought they were really good. I think they’re one of the better bands to come out.

Was it a high point in your career to get on the cover of  Guitar Player  magazine?

Oh yeah, that was amazing. ‘Cause like years ago, when we were starting off, I used to go out and buy Guitar Player  and all these magazines. And I never dreamed that we’d actually be  in  it, least of all on the front. So it’s a lovely compliment to us. It’s nice.

That time Halifax hosted a heavy metal show (and nobody rioted)

Iron maiden/twisted sister bill was a metalhead's dream in 1984 but a nightmare for others.

Halifax metal fans enjoy Iron Maiden/Twisted Sister show in 1984

Social sharing.

When Iron Maiden came to the Halifax Metro Centre on the World Slavery tour in support of their album Powerslave in 1984, some Haligonians were nervous.

The British heavy metal band was touring with Twisted Sister, then riding high on the strength of their single  We're Not Gonna Take It.

"What do today's young people really want?" asked earnest CBC reporter Melvin McLeod, introducing his piece on the concert. It aired on CBC News in Halifax on Nov. 26, 1984.

"You wanna rock. You wanna rock," growled a young bearded man ahead of the show. Fans at the arena also waved a homemade Iron Maiden banner.

Fist-shaking rock...

twisted sister iron maiden tour

"It doesn't turn out to be much more complicated than that," said McLeod. "If you had gone to Saturday's show looking for some exotic or subversive youth culture, you'd have been disappointed."

Headbangers in leather jackets and denim vests could be seen shaking their fists as Iron Maiden performed.

Singer Bruce Dickinson was interviewed backstage wearing street clothes rather than the red leather pants, sleeveless animal-print T-shirt and studded belt he wore onstage.

Anyone who had seen an Iron Maiden show "expecting some sort of social curse ... that is going to corrupt the morals of their town" got something else instead, said Dickinson.

"What they see is seven or 10,000 young kids — people, really, from 15 to 25 — having a great time enjoying themselves."

The cheers when he addressed them from the stage were confirmation of that.

"Good evening Halifax, how the hell are you tonight? All right!" he shouted into the mic as he stood with a foot on his monitor. "First time the Maiden's been to Halifax, Nova Scotia and it's not going to be the last at this rate."

The band then launched into their song The Trooper  and fans were shown rocking out, with the CBC camera capturing one metalhead singing the lyrics and brandishing devil horns.

... but no riot in Halifax

twisted sister iron maiden tour

McLeod, who described the show's noise as "awe-inspiring," gave the show a generally positive review.

"Iron Maiden and Twisted Sister seemed positively wholesome compared to Mick Jagger or Jim Morrison," he said.

And unlike the aftermath of an April Wine show four years earlier that had ended in chaos on the Dartmouth ferry, fans left peacefully — as one expert predicted.

"Contrary to popular opinion, 10,000 kids aren't going to ruin Halifax tonight," said Twisted Sister lead singer Dee Snider backstage before the show. "They're going to go home and have a good night's sleep ... because they really enjoyed themselves."

'High on the devil's music'

twisted sister iron maiden tour

Parents concerned about metal show in Halifax, says councillor

Earlier in the week, reporter Phil Forgeron interviewed Dartmouth alderman Eileen Stubbs, who had objections to the upcoming Metro Centre show.

"They're high on the devil's music," said Stubbs. "There's no doubt that Twisted Sister is sick."

She said she had received calls from "many parents" who were very concerned and "looking for some support."

No one wanted a repeat of the April Wine fiasco, when fans had done about $6,000 in damage to the Dartmouth ferry after a show in April 1980.

To that end, Stubbs suggested enforcing security at the Metro Centre, with police dogs on hand to "sniff out the drugs."

Her other suggestion was to take the ferry out of service for the night.

"If these kids had to walk the bridge, it might cool their heels awhile, and calm them down," she said.

In fact, said Forgeron, the ferry authority was planning to add a boat to service the route for the night.

DEE SNIDER Recalls TWISTED SISTER Supporting IRON MAIDEN On Powerslave Tour - "That's When Tours Were Tours, And Men Were Men"; Audio

Zoran Theodorovic of MetalgodZradiO recently spoke with Dee Snider about a number of topics. You can hear the chat below.

On playing with Iron Maiden on the Powerslave Tour at Long Beach, California's Long Beach Arena: "That's when tours were tours and men were men okay. There was no hair metal, it was just metal you know. In 84, when we toured with Maiden, it had not been branded hair metal you know, so Mötley Crüe toured with Ozzy and that tour was one of the great tours. Five nights, sold out at the Long Beach Arena and if you remember, you know, we would open and it was packed when we hit the stage, it was packed, usually the opening band, you know people show up late, no everybody was able to see Twisted, they were there to see Maiden it was one of the great concerts."

On opening for Dio: "I love Dio and I love Ronnie, but when we toured with Dio, they wouldn't move any of their equipment so we were forced onto the lip of the stage, in front of the lights so you couldn't see us. We got no spotlights, they reduced the pa, that's the way a lot of those old bands did it you know."

On what he misses about playing in Twisted Sister: "The thing I miss, is the gang mentality you know, us against the world kind of thing. Twisted Sister was famously, had our Twisted Sister colors, we called them motorcycle jackets we wore. Black Label got it from us, Bon Jovi took on their album cover, they got it from Twisted, they're all Twisted fans. So we used to walk around like, like we felt like we were a gang and uh you know, and sometimes you went into a new town, you were grossly outnumbered and uh it was nice to have your boys standing by you."

Snider's fifth full-length album, Leave A Scar, is available via Napalm Records. Order here .

DEE SNIDER Says DIO 'Wouldn't Move Any Of Their Equipment' When TWISTED SISTER Opened For Them In 1984

In a new interview with Zoran Theodorovic of MetalgodZradiO , Dee Snider looked back on TWISTED SISTER 's 1984 tour with IRON MAIDEN . "That's when tours were tours and men were men," the singer said. "There was no 'hair metal' — it was just 'metal.' In '84, when we toured with MAIDEN , it had not been branded 'hair metal.' So MÖTLEY CRÜE toured with Ozzy [ Osbourne ]. And that tour [with MAIDEN ] was one of the great tours. Five nights sold out at the Long Beach Arena. We were the opening band, and it was packed. When we hit the stage, it was packed. Usually, the opening band, people show up late. No — everybody was there to see TWISTED ; they were there to see MAIDEN ."

According to Snider , TWISTED SISTER 's 1984 tour with DIO was a far different experience. " DIO — and I love DIO and I love Ronnie [ James Dio ] — but when we toured with DIO , they wouldn't move any of their equipment, so we were forced onto the lip of the stage in front of the lights so you couldn't see us," he said. "We got no spotlights. They reduced the P.A. That's the way a lot of those old bands did it."

In 2016, TWISTED SISTER embarked on one final trek, titled "Forty And Fuck It" , in celebration of its 40th anniversary. These shows featured the band's "core lineup" of Snider , guitarist Jay Jay French , guitarist Eddie Ojeda and bassist Mark Mendoza , along with drummer Mike Portnoy . The band's last-ever concert took place in November of that year — 20 months after the passing of TWISTED 's longtime drummer A.J. Pero .

TWISTED SISTER 's original run ended in the late '80s. After more than a decade, the band publicly reunited in November 2001 to top the bill of New York Steel , a hard-rock benefit concert to raise money for the New York Police And Fire Widows' And Children's Benefit Fund .

The surviving members of the classic lineup of TWISTED SISTER — Snider , French , Ojeda and Mendoza — reunited virtually on March 20 for a special episode of Mendoza 's Internet TV show "22 Now" . The hour-and-a-half-long program was a tribute to Pero , who died exactly six years earlier at the age of 55 while on tour with the band ADRENALINE MOB .

Prior to this past March's virtual reunion, the four surviving members of TWISTED SISTER reunited for two days and nights in November 2019 to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the band's classic album "Stay Hungry" .

The show was amazing. You would think Dee Snider is still 20 years old when he jumps around on the stage. They played a really long shot being that it's the last time they're going to play in the US

My first show with seeing Twisted Sister they were opening for Iron Maiden at Long Beach Arena back in 1984.....that was back in the day, concerts and bands were still amazing.....you lined up a day before to get your tickets, awesomeness doesn't even begin to express just how very awesome this concert was.....they say you can never go back, but just show up to an old school concert...."THEY" ARE WRONG!!!!!

There are very few frontmen who command attention quite as successfully as Dee Dee Snider. Dressed in incredible stage outfit, a face full of makeup and swaying blonde hair, it is not exactly what you imagine a lead singer of a metal core band to look like yet it totally works as his eccentric personality and commanding appearance means he is able to handle the whole audience as one entity with complete ease.

He has such twisted aggression when addressing the crowd and can enthuse them to jump along to the likes of 'The Kids Are Back' with a sheer flick of his guitar and a crude insult thrown in their direction. The more they are baited, the more the audience throws themselves into the music and create mosh pits at the band's feet during 'You Can't Stop Rock 'n' Roll'. The whole venue is awash of sweat and adrenaline before the band wrap up the evening with a momentous extended 'Burn In Hell' really demonstrating the instrumental prowess before a punchy 'I Wanna Rock' once again throws the audience into a sense of mayhem, just the way Twisted Sister like it.

DEE SNIDER Says DIO ‘Wouldn’t Move Any Of Their Equipment’ When TWISTED SISTER Opened For Them In 1984

Dee Snider Ronnie James Dio

During a recent interview with MetalgodZradiO ,  Dee Snider  looked back on  TWISTED SISTER ‘s 1984 tour with  IRON MAIDEN .

“That’s when tours were tours and men were men,” Snider said. “There was no ‘hair metal’ — it was just ‘metal.’ In ’84, when we toured with  MAIDEN , it had not been branded ‘hair metal.’ So  MÖTLEY CRÜE  toured with  Ozzy  [ Osbourne ]. And that tour [with  MAIDEN ] was one of the great tours.

“Five nights sold out at the Long Beach Arena. We were the opening band, and it was packed. When we hit the stage, it was packed. Usually, the opening band, people show up late. No — everybody was there to see  TWISTED ; they were there to see  MAIDEN .”

According to  Dee ,  TWISTED SISTER ‘s 1984 tour with  DIO  was a far different experience. “ DIO  — and I love  DIO  and I love  Ronnie  [ James Dio ] — but when we toured with  DIO , they wouldn’t move any of their equipment, so we were forced onto the lip of the stage in front of the lights so you couldn’t see us,” he said. “We got no spotlights. They reduced the P.A. That’s the way a lot of those old bands did it.”

Dee Snider ‘s latest solo album,  Leave A Scar , was released on July 30 via  Napalm Records .
