Jean Louis Chave

Mauves, rhône valley • france, the plaudits are endless for this iconic estate, which has been passed down from generation to generation since the 15th century. they are the largest landowner on the hermitage hill and easily one of the world’s most important vineyards. the current generation, headed by jean-louis chave, is now operating an outstanding négociant operation as well, producing great-value wines with the same perfectionist commitment followed in hermitage..

wooden gates leading to wine cellar

Jean-Louis joined his father, Gérard, in the mid-’90s (after college in the U.S. and French military service), and he and his wife, Erin Cannon-Chave, have worked tirelessly to upgrade the vineyards and facilities. This effort has included a massive terracing project near Lemps, in Saint-Joseph; a major renovation of the négociant operation across the road from the family home; the acquisition of Clos de l’Arbalestrier from the Florentin family; and the reclamation of the neighboring vineyards on the Chalaix Hill. In addition, they did more work in Saint- Joseph at Bechasson and created a walled Belle Époque garden. There has also been excavation of the old cellar over the past decade, but if you ask the Chaves, their work is for future generations, not contemporary glory. This forward-looking vision is why they farm with organic and biodynamic practices.

Jean-Louis Deniot’s Tangier Estate is an Ode to the Beauty of Nature

A lush oasis surrounds the idyllic abode.

Produced by Martha Moskowitz

jean louis tour

In his latest book, Jean Louis Deniot: Destinations (Rizzoli), the legendary French interior designer takes readers across oceans to explore 18 of the most breathtaking retreats he’s ever created, from a cozy dacha on Yves Saint Laurent’s former property in Normandy to a sprawling Edward Lutyens–inspired estate in New Delhi—and even one very luxurious private jet.

Among the personal of these projects is Deniot’s own vacation home in Tangier, Morocco. Surrounded by lush gardens, pools, and terraces, it’s where the designer goes to relax—and entertain—in laid-back style.

To see more of this magical destination, read on for an excerpt from the book.

O n the Moroccan coast where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean, Tangier is a port town, a bridge between Europe and Africa. Strategically located on the strait of Gibraltar, Tangier is less than ten miles away from the Spanish coast. It is said that you go to Marrakech to be seen and to Tangier to stay under the radar. The antidote to his many obligations, it is here where Jean-Louis is truly himself, where he can recharge on his own terms and find the serenity to fuel his creative inspiration.

Your home in Tangier is an ode to nature.

It’s as if it were an outdoor palace of sorts! It’s on the scale of one, but it’s created only by the lush vegetation. The Garden is phenomenal and it still has not reached maturity. The towering palm trees are like gigantic columns and the umbrella pines act as large arches to create a cathedrallike effect. Yes, it’s a tribute to nature, very much alive and ever-changing, demanding adaptability and a very flexible plan.

jean louis tour

What did you discover with this home?

Thanks to this marvelous place, I finally discovered and embraced the elements of nature and began working on the landscaping for the house. It’s like the garden of Eden with a collection of palm trees and fantastic umbrella pines, the roses, the jasmine. It’s the idyllic Mediterranean garden. I love it here because for once it’s not about the interiors. It’s all about the exteriors!

It’s also a place of great joy…

The whole point of a unique space like this is to share it with others and create moments that celebrate life. In Tangier, there is a grand tradition of giving fun and entertaining parties. It’s the perfect destination to carry on this ritual, and I’m enjoying doing it very much. I find it quite fantastic that everybody gets to enjoy a great event.

jean louis tour

How has Tangier inspired you?

I finally found my tribe with whom I feel extremely comfortable to be totally myself. It’s the place where I can be the most relaxed and enjoy precious times with my partner, William. Instead of seeking uniformity, it’s a place that embraces diversity with an open heart and mind. That’s what I find so inspiring. Tangier has hosted many renowned and creative people, the likes of Pierre Bergé and Yves Saint Laurent, Francis Bacon, Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, Paul Bowles, Allen Ginsburg, and Jack Kerouac …

Tangier has hosted many renowned and creative people, the likes of Pierre Bergé and Yves Saint Laurent, Francis Bacon, Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, Paul Bowles, Allen Ginsburg, and Jack Kerouac…

Traditionally, there has always been an active artistic community of multigenerational writers, painters, decorators, and creatives in general infusing the city with a mixture of culture and aesthetics.

I love the fact it has still remained untouched. It’s like being in a time capsule that is oriented toward the future. I’m embracing the transformation that has begun, and I feel like I’m participating in the process with my own home. It feels like the land of opportunities

jean louis tour

You are always thinking about the future…

I’m not here to give you what you wish for now. My challenge is to make you discover your taste for the next fifteen to twenty years. And that’s what keeps me and the clients excited. They require tremendous energy and attention, dedication, and passion. I receive messages from them years later when they are still discovering design elements in their homes, that’s when they realize our attention to detail. I perform on a job for a few years, but someone will live in that space for dozens of years afterwards.

What have you learned?

I learn every day. I am always trying to improve and tweak, because we’re still testing every single thing on every single site. We are always fine-tuning, perfecting, and looking to push further technically and aesthetically, always guided by the notion of excellence and harmony.

jean louis tour

When you graduated from the prestigious École Camondo in Paris, what was your dream?

As a 25-year-old graduate, my dream was to land a project where I could demolish everything and then reconstruct the layout to fit my vision. It was the idea of being able to build, to construct. Today, the scale has changed, but I still take it as the same exercise even if certain developments are 100,000 square feet in scope.

I’m often asked which is my favorite project. I don’t have one that stands out because all are my favorites in very different ways, but one thing they all have in common is that they are equally loved.

Tour a Dreamy Refuge off the Coast of France Inspired by Tintin

“I wanted to create the impression of a family home that had always existed,” says its resident, designer Jean-Louis Deniot.

living room with a pouf in blue printed fabric next to tall curtained windows, a blue area rug, two blue and white striped armchairs, cocktail table, and a sofa, doors lead to a foyer where a model sailboat sits atop a console

Virginie discovered the island while vacationing in 2008, and the charm of its landscape, its temperate climate, and spellbinding light had an immediate impact. Soon after, she brought Jean-Louis, who was struck by the beauty of its architecture. “It was one of the first places I’d been where there were really old houses by the sea,” Jean-Louis says. He wasn’t too keen on their interior style, though. “They’re old-fashioned, with lots of driftwood,” he says. So when Virginie came across this house, it presented the ideal opportunity to not only create a Deniot family getaway but also redefine what a home there could look like inside.

home office with a blue and yellow printed sofa and matching window shade, floor lamps, a wood scandinavian desk with an iron chair, bright blue area rug and deep blue painted walls, doors lead to a bedroom

Wrapped around a spacious courtyard, the house was built in the 1940s by the Bordelais family from whom they purchased it. When it came up for sale, the structure was in need of extensive renovations. There were problems with humidity, the fireplace no longer worked, and there was only one bathroom. The interiors were gloomy, with wooden walls and terra-cotta floors, and the kitchen had just one tiny window. Still, the house had its charms: There was a turret, a lucid flow to the layout, and a quirky ceiling in the living room built, in part, from an old boat mast.

Together, Jean-Louis and Virginie decided to maintain a number of traditional touches. The original moldings and doors were copied, and a classic checkerboard floor was installed in the entry hall. “For my nephew and nieces, I wanted to create the impression of a family home that had always existed,” Jean-Louis says. To that end, he also chose to incorporate some more classical-looking furniture pieces, such as a sofa from his own collection for English manufacturer George Smith and a 1950s wrought-iron curule seat in the entry.

bed with upholstered headboard and decorative pillows, white bedspread with blue pompoms, nightstands with lamps on both sides, crocheted bed canopy, muted blue and white patterned wallpaper

Layered on top is a healthy dose of playfulness. One of the half-serious themes adopted for the decor was “ Tintin at the beach,” after the iconic Belgian cartoon character. “That led us to introduce bright colors and some slightly childish touches,” says Jean-Louis. The Josef Frank fabrics in the dining room and study certainly make a statement, as does the second-floor bathroom, which was painted Majorelle blue.

And a seaside house wouldn’t be right without a few maritime references. They come here via rope around the doorways, a fish sculpture on the sitting room fireplace, and a model of a 19th-century racing yacht in the entry hall. Then there is the ground-floor bedroom, whose walls were painted to resemble a sandstorm. The 1950s headboard has an unconventional retractable armrest in the middle. “I guess it was so -people could smoke or drink whiskey in bed,” he jokes.

a house with textured plaster exterior walls surrounds a courtyard with blue stone flooring, a swimming pool, two bamboo bistro chairs, a large decorative urn, and greenery climbing a wall

It is only one of a series of items in the home that were shipped from Los Angeles, where Jean-Louis has a house in the Hollywood Hills. Other pieces include the 1950s wooden cocktail table in the sitting room, an obelisk-shaped lamp in the principal bedroom, and the vintage chair in one of the children’s bedrooms. Some of the locals apparently find such midcentury marvels incongruous with the overall vibe of the island. What really raised eyebrows, though, was the installation of the swimming pool . “They initially thought it was vulgar,” Virginie says. But she insists they’re changing their minds. “When it’s low tide and over 100 degrees Fahrenheit in August, a pool is not such a bad idea.”

Tour Details

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

jean louis tour

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.
