Have a question?

Explore Tuscany's legendary "white roads" on our Gravel bike tour, where amazing rides meet the region's famed wines and gastronomy.

Tuscany’s limestone gravel roads are deeply intertwined with Italy's heritage. This legendary countryside brims with the kind of pure delights that awaken your senses. Your eyes stare in disbelief at sun-drenched, rolling vistas speckled by cypress trees and endless vineyards. Everything comes alive with the fragrant smells of olives and those deep Chianti reds. Your taste buds will indulge in rich pastas, pizzas, and all the great wines of the region. This is everything you imagine from a Tuscan vacation, but so much more as we get off the grid and onto a gravel adventure fit for royalty. You'll ride on timeworn white gravel roads, known as the strade bianche , that set the stage for Italian pro races of today and eras past, into the Crete Senesi with its stunning other-worldly views, and over to the scenic Val d’Orcia. Discover the quintessential Tuscan villages of Gaiole, picturesque Montalcino, and the most regal of them all — Siena. This is the ultimate Tuscan unpaved adventure you won’t want to miss. What Guests are Saying

Rider standing with a back toward camera looking at horizont of Tuscan countryside

It is an incredible journey to discover the hidden corners of the Tuscan territory. Nothing is like the "white roads" of Tuscany; perfect for cycling, quiet, picturesque, rich in history, and ready to host cyclists, whether it's a pro race or an historical re-enactment. At the top of each new hill, I am rewarded with unique, postcard scenery. The atmosphere that you breathe is one of a kind, the people are cheerful and light-hearted and never refuse a good glass of Chianti or Brunello.

Additional Arrival Information

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the start of your Tuscany Gravel bike trip, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into the Florence Airport (FLR).The airport is about three miles (just under five kilometers) from the town center. You can take a taxi (approximately 20 euros) directly to the hotel, or a bus which departs hourly.

You can also fly into Rome or Milan and take a train or flight from either city. From Rome’s Fiumicino Airport (FCO), you may take a direct train to Rome’s central station, Roma Termini. Follow the “Stazione/Railway Station” signs. Trains depart twice hourly. Tickets can be purchased at a Biglietteria office or from ticket machines. All tickets must be validated before getting on the train: do this by stamping your ticket at the yellow boxes near the platform. The ride takes 30 minutes. From Roma Termini, transfer to a train for Florence. The Eurostar trains depart frequently and are the quickest. The trip takes one and a half hours and costs between 44-62 euros one way per person. In Florence, taxis are available to take you to your hotel. Taxi service is available from Rome Fiumicino Airport to central Rome for approximately 50 euros. For information about travel through Milan’s Malpensa Airport (MXP), consult the website www.airportmalpensa.com .

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you on Via Fiume, 12, 50123, Florence, Italy, in front of the Hotel Albani at 10:30 AM on the first day of the trip. Please wait here to meet your Trek Travel guide. You’ll then shuttle 90 minutes to your lunch spot for a taste of Tuscan cuisine. After lunch, your guides will do a bike fitting to ensure your comfort on your Trek Checkpoint SLR 7 this week, before you take your first spin through the countryside. Please have your first day’s riding gear handy and separate from your other luggage to facilitate the bike fitting and ride.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. You will receive an email a week before the trip starts with their names and contact details. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Villa Curina Resort in Castelnuovo Berardenga (+39 0577 355630) and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. Rider Information

Rider Level: 3

Terrain: Hilly

The unpaved surfaces on our Tuscany Gravel bike tour are rated as Intermediate. About 50% of the riding is unpaved. You can expect primarily well-made, smooth dirt roads with small, sparse to moderate amounts of gravel, including the well-known white gravel roads known as the strade bianche. At times, there will be short sections of rougher road that may have chunky gravel as well as some potholes, ruts, or washboard surfaces, however there is always enough room to pick up a different line or go around obstacles. This trip covers Chianti and Crete Senesi areas of Tuscany. The terrain is a mixture of rolling hills and short, steep hills to keep you on your toes. On some days you will ride 4-8 miles (6-12 kilometers) of pavement before you reach gravel. Once on gravel roads, expect minimal traffic and no services as you will be traversing rural agricultural land. Your guides will be able to drive all roads with the support van. Our Tuscany Gravel Bike Tour is best suited for Type 3 Riders who have experience riding gravel roads and are accustomed to hilly terrain. Type 2 riders who are comfortable riding gravel but are looking for less mileage can ride the short options and utilize the shuttles as indicated. Type 4 Riders will enjoy the extra mileage and climbs the avid route options offer. If you have gravel experience but are concerned about your physical ability to conquer the mileage and elevation, you may want to try our Domane+ electric-assist bike option.

Daily Average

Know Before You Go!

We want you to be fully prepared for your cycling vacation of a lifetime. This involves making sure that you choose the appropriate trip for you and that every aspect of your experience is flawless. Each Trek Travel trip is unique to ensure maximum enjoyment every time.

Your Trip Need to Knows:

  • Getting off the beaten path means there may be limited services during gravel rides. There may not be traditional restrooms available on some routes, but there will be plenty of trees.
  • On some rides, we may opt for a simple picnic style lunch on the route or a more traditional cafe lunch at or near the end of the ride when we are back in town.
  • Dining in Tuscany: Meals in the Tuscany region often start later. Lunch begins from 1:00 PM and dinner from 8:00 PM. Dinner can also last two or more hours, allowing time to enjoy the sumptuous cuisine of the area at a leisurely pace.

Before and After Your Trip

Florence, Italy

Florence is the majestic heart of Renaissance art and intellect. Several days can be spent wandering the streets in the shadow of Brunelleschi’s Duomo and strolling beside the Arno. Along with the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio, the Uffizi gallery, a pillar of the Renaissance and Medici eras, merits a visit. Michelangeo’s David in the Galleria dell’Arte is not to be missed. Keep in mind while exploring Florence that opening hours vary and are quite often inconsistent. Different museums are open on different days and lines can be very long. It’s worthwhile to pay a few extra euros and pre-book your tickets—this will enable you to bypass long lines of visitors at the entrances. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel:

Guaranteed to run

With one person booked on a date, the trip becomes guaranteed.*

In the case where trips are at one or two guests, we will contact you prior to final payment to give you the following options:

Pay a small trip fee of $500 per person for two guests or $1000 for one guest, which ensures your preferred trip date will run. If there are three or more guests before departure date, the fee will be refunded in full.

Switch to a different trip or different departure date. Should there be any difference in trip price between your original trip and the new one, you will be expected to pay the difference, or we will refund you accordingly.

Offer only valid if Trek Travel contacts a guest to discuss these specific options. Bike trips with fewer than three guests may operate with only one guide. The guide will support all rides with a Trek Travel van. If you would like to discuss the option of having two guides, please speak with your trip consultant.

The small trip supplement for Ride Camps is as follows – for two guests an additional $250 or for one guest an additional $500.

*Cross Country, Discover, Race, and Special Edition trips as well as a small number of select departures have a minimum guest count to guarantee. Please check with your Trip Consultant for more information.

Unforeseen events may make it necessary to cancel or modify a trip. Our Guest Services team will update you with any changes. We reserve the right to cancel departures in cases of force majeure or the failure of third parties—such as hotels—to honor their reservations, in which case all payments received to date will be refunded, which constitutes full settlement. Those who choose to start on Saturday, May 25, must pick up the event packet on Friday, May 24, in the afternoon or Saturday, May 25, in the morning. Once registered, it is not possible to change the date to pick up the event packet. The start time is free, starting at sunrise 05:45 am. The exact times will be announced in the digital guide given to each registered person.

IS THERE A TIME LIMIT TO COMPLETE THE TUSCANY TRAIL 2024?

The organization will guarantee its presence until Thursday, May 30th, inside the Parco delle Sughere with bar service. What happens if you arrive after May 30th? You will still be considered a finisher but need help finding the guaranteed services. However, a large supermarket and two restaurants are in front of the park.

HOW TO GET TO THE DEPARTURE POINT AND REGISTRATION

The starting point and registration of the Tuscany Trail 2024 is: Parco delle Sughere Via Vecchia Aurelia, 1, 57022 Donoratico LI By plane: the nearest airport is Pisa (Pisa International Airport) By train: the closest station is Castagneto Carducci-Donoratico, 900 meters from the departure point. By car: 500 meters from the E80 Donoratico exit.

WHAT IS THE MOST SUITABLE BIKE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE TUSCANY TRAIL?

This is definitely one of the most frequently asked questions by participants. Let’s say right away that the track is designed to be covered by a MTB. The route is extremely varied, consisting of dirt roads, asphalt secondary roads, and paths. Over the years, participants in the Tuscany Trail have used all types of bikes, from cyclocross (and gravel bikes, of course) to enduring bikes. The truth is that there is no single answer to this question. If you use a gravel bike, you will go very fast on the sections of dirt roads and asphalt, but you will find yourself a bit in trouble along the paths and cart roads, while if you use an MTB, you will face all dirt roads with great ease, but you will be disadvantaged on asphalt.

ARE THERE ANY PRE-ARRANGED STOPS? WHERE DO I SLEEP, AND WHERE DO I EAT?

The Tuscany Trail is defined as a “no-stop” event in the sense that there are no fixed stops, but each participant can freely decide where to stop, eat, and sleep along the way. Our advice is to study the route before leaving to get an idea of the possible stops you will make.

HOW DO I FIND FACILITIES ALONG THE WAY TO EAT AND SLEEP? DO YOU HAVE ANY AGREEMENTS WITH SOME FACILITIES?

We do not have any kind of convention along the way. The best way to find a place at the best possible price is to take advantage of technology and in particular, make use of booking.com and Google Maps. The deals you will find on these two sites are the absolute best, and even we couldn't get that much with a possible convention. Google Maps allows you to figure out where a facility is located and how many miles separate you from it while booking.com allows you to book online. This year, there will be equipped areas with restrooms and showers, they will be marked in the digital guide you will receive after registration.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE FINISHING POINT?

During opening hours, you will have the opportunity to eat and drink at the Parco delle Sughere bar. If you arrive at night (outside the park opening hours indicated in the guide), you may not find anything open to eat.

REGISTRATION ARE ALREADY CLOSED, IS THERE A CHANCE TO REGISTER?

There is no option to register for the Tuscany Trail outside of the official registration date. Unfortunately, we receive many emails from people requesting to register when registration has already closed. The registration period lasts for months and that is the only time you can register. We strongly recommend that you sign up and read our newsletter regularly; we will be the ones to remind you of useful dates.

I AM REGULARLY REGISTERED, BUT I CAN'T PARTICIPATE. IS THERE A REFUND?

Per our regulations that you must read before registering, there is no refund/ partial refund/transfer of registration to the following year.

CANCELLATION OR SHIFTING OF THE EVENT

Cancellation – If, for reasons of force majeure that do not depend on the organization but on environmental and/or health reasons at a national or international level, the event cannot take place, the amount paid at the time of registration will not be refunded but will be considered valid for the next edition. The organization will be entitled, for those who re-register free of charge to the next edition, to a contribution for secretarial expenses and the renewal of the sports card. Shifting of the event – Furthermore, for reasons of force majeure or other serious reasons, which could jeopardize the preparation of the event or the participation in it by several people, not less than half of the members, the Organization reserves the right to move the place and / or date of the event within the same calendar year. In this case, the registration fee will be valid for the event on the rescheduled date without additional costs for the members. In this case, it is not possible to move the registration to the following year’s edition.

E-bikes are allowed on the Tuscany Trail.

tour toscana gravel 2023

INZAIN invites you to a fantastic gravel experience in Tuscany

October is an ideal time to ride gravel in Tuscany. Warm, but not hot, a little less people & fantastic roads. The tour is set up so that we stay at two different vineyards and have a companion car, our luggage is transported in it when we change hotels and if you, or even a bicycle, need it, you can ride in it, the whole way or maybe a bit if you e.g. ex. want to ride a little shorter. We will also have spare bikes, wheels and tools in case of an accident.

Video from Gravel Tour 2022

Food and drinks

We are all different and our needs vary, therefore we have created the event so that all breakfast is included, we eat this at the vineyards. During the day, bananas, water, sports drink and energy are available at the places where we meet the escort car. You choose lunch and dinner and pay for it yourself. We will have reservations at restaurants in the evenings, but if you want to eat yourself or somewhere else, that is of course fine. We will similarly select restaurants for lunches, but if you want to eat somewhere else, go ahead.

The follow car

We have a companion car, it meets up to give us water and energy. If something breaks, it picks up the bike and cyclist. It has tools and some spare parts. It is a security and very practical.

Pictures and film

Pictures and videos from an adventure are fun. We will have a camera on the bike, a drone with the follow-up car and invite all participants to also take pictures. We compile and make these available to everyone.

Strade Bianchi & Eorica

Iconic roads are just the first name. We will both ride bikes. Day three we reach L'eroica and along it comes the first stretch that is usually part of the Strade Bianchi.

Gravel and tarmac

The routes mix gravel and asphalt with good food, wine, gelato, climbs, incredible views and coffee. There is not much to miss in Tuscany.

You can e.g. relax by the pool, take an excursion or drink wine, or all at once. We then cycle to the next winery, a truck takes all the luggage, so we can concentrate on having fun. Once there, a few nice days await in the southern part of Tuscany before we get to our flights home. It's not a race, but there are really tough strava segments for those who want to stretch their legs a little extra. We will take time for lunch, coffee and other things. We are here for the experience.

Rider's Guide

In addition to the great work with the routes themselves, all participants also receive a Riders Guide, it contains all information about routes, places where the car meets, coffee places, climbs, bails, etc. Here you can see last year's guide.

Friday, October 6 Arrival Rome. Our comfortable shuttle bus is waiting to take us to the winery near Siena. If you arrange your own flight, please contact us regarding transfers. Once there, we assemble our bikes, do a short test ride and eat dinner.

The routes will be challenging and between 6-13 miles long. Several of them are available in different versions, so you can choose according to the type of day. The following car means that we can support if someone has a problem or gets tired. We will give all participants one Rider's Guide , with the routes and lots of information about them well in advance of the trip.
