Travel Health
Overseas travel exposes you to wonderful new experiences, but it can also expose you to potentially serious travel health risks. Remember – your health is your responsibility – with a bit of preparation, you can prevent an illness that could ruin your holiday, or worse.
See our doctor well in advance before you leave
Our doctor can advise you on how to avoid infectious diseases to which you might be exposed while overseas. This might include measures to avoid consuming potentially contaminated water or food, medication to reduce the risk of acquiring infections or vaccination against serious disease.
Immunisation
Many diseases which are a risk to travellers can be prevented by immunisation. You should talk to our doctor about any vaccines or boosters you may need. Some diseases that should be considered are:
- Hepatitis A
- Hepatitis B
- Japanese encephalitis
- Meningococcal disease
- Tuberculosis
- Varicella (Chickenpox)
- Yellow fever
Some countries still suffer high rates of infection from diseases that are rare in Australia due to our routine childhood vaccination. If you were born overseas, and you are returning to visit friends and family, you should still check with our doctor if you need any immunisations. Your immunity to some diseases may have changed or diminished with time.
Immunisations which are now routine in childhood in Australia should also be considered if travelling to areas where these diseases remain common. Depending on your age and previous medical history, you may not be protected against diseases such measles or polio. It is important to schedule a visit to our doctor at least 6-8 weeks before you travel to allow time to complete any vaccination schedule you undertake.
In summary, if you are planning a trip overseas consider your travel health. Contact us well in advance before you leave.

If you are travelling overseas on business or for a much-needed holiday you want to ensure that you are in the best possible health. Don’t waste a well-earned break or a potential business opportunity by being unwell. We stock numerous travel vaccines onsite, although not Yellow Fever at this stage.
Medical Hub @ RMIT recommends visiting one of our doctors at least 6 weeks before your departure date. This will give you the time to obtain all of the necessary vaccinations and receive practical advice for staying well while you are overseas. Moreover, some vaccines require a course for adequate immunity – so don’t leave your visit until the last minute!
Travel Medicine Services
At Medical Hub @ RMIT we can help you determine the specific risks you may be facing on your trip. We can use information such as the countries you are travelling to, or through, plus your previous immunisation history to develop an immunisation plan prior to your departure. We can also check your immunity to various diseases to avoid repeat immunisation.
Vaccinations and their corresponding destinations
Deciding which exact vaccinations you need depends on a number of factors and is best left to a qualified health professional. These factors include:
- The country or region you are visiting
- The length of your trip
- The specific locations within that region you will visit (e.g. rural areas)
- Past immunisation history
Make an appointment with one of our doctors to discuss your upcoming trip and they will map out an immunisation plan specific to your circumstances.
What to bring to your consultation
You can make the most out of your travel vaccination consultation by planning ahead and preparing some basic documentation. Based on the information below your doctor will be able to map out an immunisation plan:
- Dates you are travelling away
- Any challenging or out-of-the-way accommodation you may be staying in
- Any special activities (skiing, surfing, etc.)
A travel consultation at Medical Hub @ RMIT costs $105.
A follow up consultation costs $70.
We do offer a medicare rebate. The medicare rebate is approximately $74.
Travel vaccines are not covered by Medicare.
This will depend on the type of medication and specific importation rules of each country. It is best to check with the Australian Consulate in the country you wish to travel to.
Check with your insurer as this will depend on your individual policy and pharmaceutical extras.

The flu vaccine does not provide long-lasting immunity - so you need to be vaccinated each year.
Getting a flu vaccination is strongly recommended, especially if you are self-employed, because if you do get the flu - it's nasty and you just will not be able to work. Think of it as insurance.
If you are over 65 or pregnant, you may be eligible for a government funded flu vaccine.
The importance of annual vaccination
Influenza viruses evolve constantly and in order to provide continuous protection it is necessary to provide people with annual vaccinations that contain the most recent strains.
Health organisations recommend annual vaccines, because post-vaccination antibody titres tend to decline over the course of 12 months. For optimal protection against influenza an annual vaccine is essential, even when the strains haven’t changed since the last flu season.

Victorian government scraps plans for a second supervised injecting room in Melbourne
Premier Jacinta Allan has dumped government plans for a supervised injecting room, despite expert advice recommending a "discreet" service be set up in Melbourne's CBD.
Instead, the Allan government will set up a new $36.4 million community health service in Flinders Street including a trial of hydromorphone — a powerful drug used to wean people off heroin — for up to 60 people.
Pharmacotherapy, which involves specialist drugs like methadone and counselling, will also be expanded at 30 locations across the state.
Naloxone, a powerful overdose-reversal drug , will also be trialled at 20 vending machines alongside needle exchange programs.
The government will also appoint a chief addiction adviser within the state's health system.
Report recommending second supervised injecting room released
The government has also released the closely guarded report from former police chief commissioner Ken Lay, which was handed to the government in May last year.
It recommends a small supervised injecting room with space for four to six people be set up in an area of high use in the city.
"There is strong evidence from the North Richmond MSIR trial and other similar trials around the world that injecting services save lives and assist in putting people who inject drugs on a pathway to better health and social outcomes,'' Mr Lay wrote.
But the Allan government has not accepted that recommendation.
Premier Jacinta Allan said the government could not find a suitable site for the second supervised injecting room.
"This issue of the location has been a key sticking point. We have been unable to find a location that strikes that balance between supporting people who use drugs with the needs of the broader community," she said.
"We could continue for years ahead to search for a location but we've chosen to take action now, putting in place a statewide action plan that will save lives."
Opposition leader John Pesutto slammed today's announcement, calling it a "half-baked" health strategy that had wasted time.
"Today’s backflip has seen four lost years. Since July 2020, we’ve (had) a 40 per cent increase in the wait list for drug and alcohol services," Mr Pesutto said.
"It ought to give Victorians no confidence that the Allan Labor government has any idea how to address rising drug and alcohol use in our state."
Former premier Daniel Andrews had also committed his government to a CBD centre In 2020, following the success of the North Richmond safe injecting room.
In 2021, the government purchased the former Yooralla building at 244 Flinders Street as the preferred site for a centre, but in 2023 Mr Andrews switched preference to the Salvation Army on Bourke Street, just 200 metres from state parliament.
Mr Pesutto also criticised the $40m purchase of the Yooralla building, calling it a sign of "policy on the run".
"It's clear that it bought this building, not having a plan in place," he said.
The site at 244 Flinders Street will now be the base for the multi-million dollar community health service, while the Salvation Army headquarters in Bourke Street will house a new "wraparound" health service.
One health sector source said the government were "cowards" for not setting up the centre, while others said they were disappointed with the decision.
Melbourne's CBD the deadliest council area for drug deaths
Mr Lay's report found the City of Melbourne was the deadliest council area for drug deaths, with 54 fatalities in 2020 and 2021.
His number one recommendation was for the government to trial a CBD supervised injecting room.
"The community understands that there is a problem with injecting drug use in the city and wants more support to mitigate these harms. However, there are concerns that an injecting service would negatively impact the broader city community," the report said.
The report found heroin deaths in the CBD had increased since the pandemic. There were 12 deaths in the first six months of 2022, compared to 10 deaths in 2019.
More recent data from the Coroners Court of Victoria analysed by the ABC has shown the trend identified in Mr Lay's report has continued.
Another 12 people died in the City of Melbourne in the second half of 2022 , resulting in a rate of two deaths per month — the highest since 2013.
Under Mr Lay's recommendations, special committees would be set up to coordinate responses to drug harm in the city, as well as a committee to coordinate with the community, before a trial is held.
Among the other recommendations is that the state consider expanding the use of pharmacotherapy in the CBD.
Mr Lay's review included a state-run public survey which found 52 per cent of respondents did not think there was a need for safe injecting room while 40 per cent said yes.
Drug policy expert says 'lives will be lost' due to government decision
Deputy director of the Addiction Research Centre at Monash University, Suzanne Nielsen, said it was a disappointing outcome.
"We know now that the number of deaths in Melbourne is far higher than it was when the original report was written and that need is even greater for a second supervised injecting room," Professor Nielsen told ABC Radio Melbourne.
"Lives will be lost and we know that more people now are using drugs unsafely in public spaces. It's not a win for local traders or the community either."
Professor Nielsen welcomed the expansion of pharmacotherapy, but said such programs should exist alongside safe injecting rooms.
"I 100 per cent advocate that we need more pharmacotherapy, but this is absolutely not a choice. We're not choosing between treatment and supervised injecting rooms," she said.
CEO of addiction and mental health service, First Step, Patrick Lawrence, said it was a missed opportunity to improve health outcomes for drug users.
"We've got thousands of injecting rooms in Melbourne. Injecting laneways, injecting streets, and injecting parks," he said.
"All we are asking for — I don't know maybe it's too late, it's terribly sad — is one with four walls, and a roof, and doctors and nurses."
Hospitality business says no CBD injecting room 'a bit of a win'
However, Mike Patrick, who runs Fancy Hank's restaurant in Bourke Street, welcomed the decision not to set up an injecting room next to his business.
"What was being suggested was not going to work at all in my opinion," he told ABC Radio Melbourne.
"I think that there's no good spot to put something like this really and I think this is a bit of a win for the other side of the population who like to come out and spend money in our city.
"The stuff that has been put forward can help across the whole community not just in one small area but attracting everyone there."

‘Will cost lives’: addiction experts condemn decision to scrap proposed safe injecting room in Melbourne’s CBD
Government claims no appropriate location could be found for long-mooted second facility

A proposed safe injecting room in Melbourne’s CBD has been rejected by the Victorian government, with addiction experts warning the decision will “cost lives”.
The government on Tuesday announced that a trial facility, recommended by a former police commissioner and which would complement the existing service in North Richmond – will not proceed, after concluding there was no site that could balance the needs of drug users with the broader community.
The Greens described the move as “gutless” and a “spineless captain’s call”, while experts have warned it will put drug users in the CBD at risk, despite a government commitment to fund more support services.
John Ryan, who chaired a panel overseeing the North Richmond facility, which first recommended a second injecting room in the CBD in 2020, described the decision as disappointing.
“The evidence tells us that we can cut the number of overdoses and deaths when people have access to a medically supervised injecting site,’’ said Ryan, now the chief executive at the Penington Institute.
“Overdose is a leading cause of death in Australia – it’s higher than the road toll – but there are ways to prevent overdoses and prevent deaths … As a society we cannot keep putting band aids on a gaping wound.”
Prof Suzanne Nielsen, an opioid expert and deputy director of Monash university’s Addiction Research Centre, said the need for a facility had only become greater since the government committed to a second site four years ago.

She said Melbourne had the “highest rates of heroin harm in the country and these are centred in the CBD”.
“It is a false dichotomy to say we are choosing between a supervised injecting room and treatment – we urgently need more of both,” Nielsen said.
“Not supporting this service and having people injecting drugs unsafely in public places in the CBD, where they could have been supported in a health service, is not a win for traders or the community.”
The announcement came as the government released a long-awaited report by the former Victorian police commissioner Ken Lay, commissioned in 2020 and received a year ago, into a potential safe injecting room for the city.
Lay recommended a trial of a “small and discrete service” of four to six booths in the CBD, which is significantly smaller than the 20-booth facility at North Richmond, due to the “safety and amenity concerns” of the local community.
But the premier, Jacinta Allan, said the government no longer supported the establishment of a second site in the CBD and ruled out the possibility of a facility in another location.
“This now puts a line under a second safe injecting room in Victoria,” she said.
Keep Our City Alive, group of Melbourne residents, business owners and health professionals who lobbied for a CBD injecting room, said it was “saddened and disappointed” the government had ignored advice “for short term political gain”.
“Today’s announcement means that lives will continue to be lost unnecessarily to overdose in our city,” the group said.
Patrick Lawrence, the chief executive of addiction and mental health service First Step, said there was “absolutely no question” the decision “will cost lives”.
“We’ve got thousands of injecting rooms in Melbourne. Injecting laneways, injecting streets, and injecting parks. All we are asking for … is one with four walls, and a roof, and doctors and nurses,” Lawrence said.
Allan said the location had “been a key sticking point”.
“We have been unable to find a location that strikes the right balance … between supporting people who use drugs with the needs of the broader community,” she said.

Lay’s report rejected an initial proposal to set up a safe injecting room site at 53 Victoria Street, near Queen Victoria Market, as it was “not located in a concentrated drug market”.
Instead, he identified four areas of injecting drug harms in the CBD with the highest ambulance attendances for heroin overdoses, with the “most significant” located near the intersection of Elizabeth Street and Flinders Street.
From an initial list of 50 sites, he narrowed down a shortlist of the three sites for the government: 104 A’Beckett Street, 340 Flinders Street and 244 Flinders Street.
He did not nominate a preferred site but said 244 Flinders Street – the former Yooralla building – “ranked highest” by experts. It was bought by the government.
In 2022, Lay found drug-related harms had “returned to pre-Covid levels and in some cases are now even higher”, with the intersection of Flinders and Elizabeth streets accounting for 20% of heroin-related ambulance attendances.
According to coroner’s court data, 549 Victorians died from drug overdoses in 2022, with 230 involving heroin. The City of Melbourne was the local government area with the most fatal heroin overdoses, with 24 recorded in 2022.
Instead of opening a new facility , Allan and the mental health minister, Ingrid Stitt, announced a new $95.11m plan to tackle drug overdoses.
The plan will include $36.4m to establish a CBD hub to open at 244 Flinders Street, which will offer a two-year $7.2m trial of hydromorphone treatment for 60 heroin users.
An additional $9.4m will be spent to establish wraparound health and social supports, which will be located at that site as well as the Salvation Army’s CBD headquarters.
Community health provider, cohealth, will also be given $21.3m for more outreach teams in the CBD. About $8.4m will be spent on pharmacotherapy treatments in “up to 30 locations”, while a $4.4m trial of 20 Naloxone dispensing machines will be rolled out.
Cohealth’s Paul MacCartney, doctor and addiction medicine specialist, and the commanding officer of the Salvation Army, Maj Brendan Nottle, said they had “mixed emotions” about the government’s plan.
“There’s evidence that injecting rooms save lives and we will continue to advocate … [that they] be part of the suite of treatments available in Victoria,” MacCartney said.
