Welcome Aboard

THE SHIP ISLAND FERRY

Ship Island Excursions and the Skrmetta Family are celebrating 98 years of transporting visitors to the Mississippi Islands.

Relaxation, recreation, and history-these are the gifts offered to you on Ship Island. Here in the Gulf of Mexico, about 11 miles off Mississippi’s Coast, are some of the last undeveloped barrier islands in America. Part of Gulf Islands National Seashore and protected by the U.S. Park Service, these exquisite sand islands offer visitors the first high-quality, natural beaches for swimming, birding and shelling east of New Orleans.

A cruise to Ship Island is an affordable, family-friendly adventure and one of the most popular outdoor attractions on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Passengers are sure to spot dolphins while crossing the Mississippi Sound on the 1-hour boat ride. You’ll discover what locals and visitors have enjoyed for generations, the Coast’s finest beaches.  The passenger ferries depart from the Gulfport Yacht Harbor in Jones Park (intersection of Hwy. 90 and Hwy. 49). Boats operate typically mid-March through October.

The island is also home to Fort Massachusetts, a beautifully preserved, brick structure used during the Civil War. Seasonal fort tours are offered by the National Park Service. A section of beach with lifeguards is available in summer. Food service is offered on the boats and on the island. Umbrella and beach chair rentals are also available.

A 5-STAR BARRIER ISLAND BEACH EXPERIENCE

dolphin cruise ship island

"What a great place to visit. We took the trip out from Biloxi on Captain Pete the Crew on the Boat was great. Once out on the Island it was awesome to see the old Fort and the Island was great. Snack bar with clean restrooms a great day away from everything. We will definitely do it again when we are down there."

a bird flying over a beach next to the ocean

"Was worth every penny to take the boat out to Ship Island... On the way out and trip back we saw dolphins! The boat was fully shaded and crew was very nice. Ship Island itself is beautiful, water is clear all around it and you will see all kinds of wildlife. The water was much better for swimming than the mainland. Whole experience was amazing, one of the best beaches I have been to. Wanted to go back the next day!"

dolphin cruise ship island

"We went here because there wasn't anything to do but swim, walk on the beach, or sunbathe. We walked on the beach, then took the fort tour, which was interesting. We had a blast. The best news was that the concession stand had reasonably priced food and drinks, and you can rent umbrellas and chairs so you don't need to drag it with you."

dolphin cruise ship island

"We purchased tickets online one day before our trip. It was simple and user friendly. We arrived early for the 9:00am departure. Thankfully we did, they had to use two boats for the 9:00 departure. We were able to get onto that first boat, which ensured us an umbrella and chair rental. The day was beautiful, water was clear...it was a wonderful family day trip."

dolphin cruise ship island

"This is a terrific day-trip! Bring an ice chest, rest chairs and an umbrella and get ready for a great beach adventure. I love going to Ship Island and have been doing it for many years now. It's a bargain and it is a treat to spend the day there! Go! Do it! Love it!"

FOR A DAY ON A QUIET BARRIER ISLAND

Leave the stress of the mainland behind. Board our ferry and cross the beautiful Mississippi Sound, approximately 11 miles out to where the offshore islands meet the emerald green waters of the Gulf of Mexico. As the ferry docks on the north shore of Ship Island, passengers will notice fish and other sea life in the clear water next to the boat. Visitors can tour a beautifully persevered Civil War fort, followed by an opportunity to explore miles of enchanting beach, perfect for swimming, shelling and birding.  A snack bar, picnic pavilions, restrooms, and other visitor amenities are provided.

A great trip which allows time to explore the island and fort. The guides and hosts were helpful and knowledgeable. It is recommended to pack light because it is a bit of a walk to the outer side if the island.

This is the best and cheapest get away to take. Me and my sister come every year. This year we brought her daughter in law and had a blast! We walked the island and found beautiful shells. Sat on the beach listening to the waves. Staff was AWESOME bathrooms were very clean! All around great trip!

The first time that I went to Ship Island was a few weeks before Hurricane Camille hit as a child. Last week I returned for about my 4th or 5th trip and not a lot has changed since then. The island and fort are still there and Ship Island Excursions has taken me there every time (except for one visit on a private boat). All of those visits were pleasurable. This company does a very good job of transporting patrons to the island for the day. Their boats offer plenty of room onboard for the 55 minute trip each way. They offer outside seating and air conditioned inside seating with a snack bar that sells food and drink at reasonable prices. The crew is friendly and on my trip last week I talked to Captain Doug frequently as he was very personable. Unless you have a personal boat, they are the only way to get there. Here is some info and tips: When you reach the island the fort is right there but you have about a 400 yard walk to the gulf side beach. That walk is all on an elevated wooden walkway. Remember this if you are going to carry a lot of stuff or pull a small cooler on wheels. Travel as light as you can and read their website for what's allowed and what isn't. The island is about 12 miles offshore and while on the island you can barely see Gulfport and Biloxi but only by their tallest structures. You will be out of cellphone range but they have a short range booster at the snack shack. I think it reaches to the part of the beach where the recliners and umbrellas are and the fort so you will have connectivity in that area. Your best bang for the buck is to catch the morning departure (9 am) and if it's during the busy season then you will have two options on when to come back (2:30 or 5 pm). Don't bring your chairs or umbrellas and instead rent theirs. Bring a towel or beach blanket to lay on if you want. They serve food there (burgers, hot dogs, chicken wraps) and snacks and drinks. Bring your own food to save money. Drinks can be heavy to carry so consider buying theirs. They also sell hats, t shirts, sunscreen, bug spray, etc. Bring your own. At least visit the fort for a walkthrough (15 minutes) but better yet attend one of the two NPS ranger led tours (one when you arrive and another in the early afternoon) which are interesting and educational. That little fort has seen a lot of history. They have outdoor showers to rinse off with and two covered pavilions if you need to get out of the sun or if it rains. The snack shop is air conditioned but is small with no seating inside. Your best protection from the weather if it gets bad is inside the fort. Ship Island is really a cool and different way to go to the beach. Being so far out from the mainland is a different experience which makes it a fun day time activity. Remember you have to be on that last boat that leaves. If not po po comes looking for you.

The disappointment and dissatisfaction frames this review. The SIE should not sell more tickets then they can accommodate to see the Air Show. Beyond ridiculous and a very dissatisfied customer. More disappointing is the fact that Cpt. Lewis. says we'll get close to the light house, instead we circle about 3 times, nowhere close to the light house and a poor location in which to see an air show. Perhaps further east towards the lighthouse would have afforded the paying customers a chance to view the air show which came from the West! Instead we troll on west and are in a location that did not allow a decent viewing. This was my first air show and it was really not worth the money. We were at the west end of the show, slowly motoring west away from the show. Nowhere close to the lighthouse. We never stopped just kept coming W away from the show. Your bartenders were very good. We enjoyed the cocktails. The restroom lacked TP and the plumbing was not cooperating.

Yelp! We are a party of 5 girlfriends. We loved the Dolphin watching ship excursion. The crew was Amazing. Especially the sweet lady working concessions. POPCORN was so fun and good. This is one of the many things to do in Gulfport! Y'all already know, I'll be back.

This was a great trip! We took the 12:00-5:00 ferry ride to the island. Great boat ride with snacks and beer. The staff members were super sweet. Answered all of my questions. Even called me back to clarify for information. I would totally do this again.

I had heard that Ship Island was worth checking out, but I must say it surpassed my expectations. We were there at 9am am- 5pm with our two kids. Packed lightly per advice and was grateful we did, lots of walking. Plus, they had food and drink there. We swam, fished, relaxed, and explored. It was cool to look as far as you could see and not see another human! My only suggestion for improvement would be to sell live bait there as the fish seemed to prefer live bait. It's amazing fishing.... with the right bait! The fort is really neat, and I recommend doing the guided tour (free) for the info. It's really just a history lesson and FAQ, and then you can explore on your own. The company was super accommodating, on time, friendly and professional. Take sunscreen seriously and enjoy your time. It's a special place.

Came for the Coast Young Professionals sunset cruise, which was a great evening on the water! Excursions leave out of the Gulfport marina, which was ample signs leading you to the correct dock and plenty of parking. The ship has tons of seating, a cash bar, and bathrooms. We enjoyed a cruise around the bay, but they also do excursions to Ship Island if you want to experience a beach getaway!

dolphin cruise ship island

Of everything we had planned for our gulf coast roadtrip, this was one of the things I was most excited about, but somehow it didn't quite measure up to my expectations. I mean, don't get me wrong. It was a FULL day at the beach and we all had a blast, but in the end I'm just not convinced it's worth the cost and hassle to get out there. I didn't find the water or sand to be significantly better than the shore in Gulfport. It certainly wasn't anywhere even close to the beauty of the Florida beach we visited later on in the trip, and swimming there was free! We did find some great shells and enjoyed the experience of swimming off an island. Even on a day like Memorial Day, the fact that you can only access the island by boat keeps it from getting too crowded. The sand was nice, the water was nice. It just wasn't worth the $260 we paid for our family to get there.

Rated "Excellent" by 150+ Reviewers on TripAdvisor

This is a very good value as the cruise lasted about 2 hours...Captain Mark was very informative and told me lots of things that I did not know about the area and dolphins. The weather and the scenery were great. This was the second time I have taken this trip and I would absolutely do it again.

Captain Mark and Thomas were friendly, the boat was clean, and we learned things that we hadn't known before--thanks to Captain Mark's excellent and informative narration of all things HHI. We will do this boat trip again, next time with our kids.

We took a sunset cruise and it could not be more happy with the experience! It was absolutely gorgeous and we saw tons of dolphins. Captain Mark is very knowledgeable. It was truly a pleasant evening!

It was just wonderful...Captain Mark was most informative about the history of the island, and the development of Hilton Head as a community. And yes, we did see several pods of dolphin, and Captain Mark gave us plenty of information.

Recently took my fifth cruise with Capt Marks Dolphin Watch....I enjoy this informative and delightful cruise so much! The trip is narrated with so many facts about HHI, I am constantly amazed. The ship is very big, not fast, not scary, no motion sickness. Just a really enjoyable trip.

High recommend this cruise. Amazing experience. The captain was very informative and quite humorous. We all enjoyed it so much. Saw so many dolphins, jellyfish and a shark. Well worth the money!!! Will definitely do this cruise again the next time that we are in Destin.

My trip to Destin Florida was really good. We took sometime to do the dolphin cruise. It was so much fun spotting them. The cruise was very relaxing, and the captain made the trip really fun. Would definately recommend!

We scheduled this as a surprise for my best friend’s birthday. She loves dolphins, so I was really hoping we would actually see some. Jason was really fun and made it interesting. The water was a bit choppy, but that was fun too. We finally found a whole family of dolphins, with a baby and we had so much with them! It was a great time.

We always do this cruise whenever we come to Destin area. It's always a great time and I can't say enough about the staff. Super friendly and attentive. This trip we saw more dolphins than we have in years past. Fun for the whole family!

Our family of three enjoyed the cruise, Destin is beautiful when your on the boat you get to really see it’s water. We did see a couple dolphins and fed some of the birds. They have refreshments on board if you’d like to drink and captain hats that my son fell in love with. At the end they gave my son a small treasure. It’s a great way to end the evening watching the sunset on the cruise.

This was our 2nd dolphin cruise with Southern Star. Per usual it did not disappoint! The captain was super knowledgeable and told us all about the bay’s history as we toured the bay. He also knew exactly where to find the dolphins and made sure everyone got a good view! It was just fantastic!

This was my family's first dolphin sighting cruise and it did not disappoint. We had a charming captain and he made sure we learned the history of the area as well as saw dolphins, manta rays, all kinds of jelly fish, and sharks! The beautiful waters made it easy to see in and the size of the boat was perfect! Would recommend to anyone.

This was the highlight of our trip!! My 3 year old and I had a blast! The captain was on mission to find us some dolphins, and he found us 12-15 sharks too!! Such an amazing time. So glad we chose this tour!!

Escape to Beautiful Catalina Island

Unwind and connect with nature during our limited-edition Catalina Island Cruise.

Our upscale double-deck catamaran  Hoku Nai’a  is so much more comfortable and less crowded than an express boat to Catalina!

With a Mediterranean climate, clear blue waters, and many fun things to do, locals know Catalina Island to be a little piece of paradise about 30 miles off Dana Point’s coast. Every year  Captain Dave enjoys taking his family on a Catalina Island boat charter, and he would like you and your family to enjoy Catalina Island too ⏤ while whale watching along the way!

There are outdoor activities for everyone at Catalina Island. Each Catalina Island Cruise will have a different destination – either Avalon or Two Harbors. On the east end of the island, you can loosen up in Avalon’s many hotels, beaches, and spa experiences. If you want some adventure, then our Two Harbors itinerary is for you! Located on the west end of the island, you’ll enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and snorkeling.

After arriving at the island, you’ll have around 4 to 5 hours to go ashore and eat, explore, and enjoy the many delights of Catalina.

Reviews of Our Catalina Island Cruise

Google review logo

Took the whole family out to Catalina (parents, grandfather, sister, and boyfriend) and I was very happy with our experience. The included breakfast and dinner were ideal as it allowed us the full 4 hours to enjoy the island and not have to worry about eating and it was delicious. I appreciated the stops for whale and dolphin watching going and returning. It was really awesome how close we got to everything. Staff was also very friendly which was much appreciated and I appreciated the commentary they gave for each species we saw. We enjoyed talking to staff and Captain Dave himself. We plan on doing the Two Harbors trip next month. Definitely recommend!

The trip to Catalina was fun and exciting seeing a fin whale, a minke whale and lots of dolphin. The staff was friendly and very knowledgeable about the sea life and our time on Catalina Island.

One of the most thrilling experiences of my life! The crew were fantastic, so informative and thoughtful! The food was outstanding! The dolphins.... Well, they were worth every single penny and more! Not only did we catch an amazing pod leaving Catalina but also another huge pod closer to the mainland! Wow!

This was an 11-hour tour to Catalina Island and back on the Hoku Nai'a, one of my favorite boats. You just feel really special on her with the fun decor, open decks and comfortable seating. She's definitely not zippy so the trip to Catalina is about 3.5 hours, including well-deserved and desired stops for cetaceans, which we saw 3 minkes, a fin whale, and 2 pods of dolphins; bottlenose and hundreds of common dolphins. Also in the morning we were served a lovely breakfast with delicious, ripe in-season fruit, some pastry, coffee and juices. There were several substantial snacks being passed around for meat-eaters, so I do suggest they have a couple of vegetarian items. Once we docked there was about 4 hours to do what you desired in town. I had plenty of time to shop (for a new hat as mine flew off into the wake of the Hoku), eat lunch with a friend, and snorkel, a great afternoon! On our way back to Dana Point, we again had a tasty meal, animal and plant-based burgers were offered with all the fixin's. The dolphin pods joined us on this leg, highly entertaining us. Yes the crew was on it, two Captains; including THE Captain Dave and Capt. Alex, and Mates Caitlyn, Lauren, and Will. They shared information along the way and all were very engaging when we asked questions. We motored into Dana Point Harbor in front of a beautiful sunset and silhouetted harbor birds on the jetties. Excellent Adventure!

I absolutely love this company! A friend and I did the Whale Watch trip to Catalina and back. Although it was a long day, it was worth it. The crew were outstanding as always. They take such good care of all of us on the boat! The trip included a hot Continental breakfast and a Burger & Hot Dog Bar for dinner. We were fortunate to see several Minke whales, a Fin Whale and plenty of dolphins and 4 hours to do whatever you wanted to do on the island. Thanks again for a wonderful day!

We had such a great time with captain Dave & his crew .

Set off From the Dolphin & Whale Capital of the World®

Many SoCal destinations offer trips to Catalina Island by boat. But none of them can rival the Dana Point to Catalina Island cruise experience. With year-round whale sightings and more dolphins per square mile than anywhere else on earth, Dana Point is  the official Dolphin and Whale Watching Capital of the World® .

Traveling to Catalina Island from Dana Point is an adventure you’ll never forget. On your way to and from the island, you can enjoy rare sights like watching giant blue whales or seeing  dolphin stampedes  ⏤ a breathtaking spectacle of hundreds or even thousands of dolphins leaping in and out of the water!

Interact With Dolphins

There’s a reason why Dana Point is known as the dolphin capital of the world. There are more than 450,000 dolphins off Dana Point’s coast! With all these dolphins in our waters, you’re most likely going to meet a whole bunch of them on our trip to Catalina Island by boat. Some of the most common types of  dolphins we see  on our Catalina Island cruises include:

  • Common dolphins  ⏤ Most of the dolphins you’ll see on our cruises are common dolphins. These beautiful creatures are very social and often come over to bow ride with our boat.
  • Bottlenose dolphins  ⏤ One of the most popular types of dolphin species, bottlenose dolphins are larger than their common counterparts. They are very playful and intelligent, responding to our guests’ claps and cheers with aerial acrobatic performances!
  • Risso’s dolphins  ⏤ Risso’s are easily identified by their unusual look. They have no beak, a blunt round head, and their body is scarred with white lines from head to tail.

Watch Whales Up Close

Dana Point has one of the most diverse marine ecosystems in the world. This makes it an ideal environment for different species of whales. Our waters are home to a large variety of whales that can be seen all day throughout the year. A few types of  whales we commonly see  on our Catalina Island cruises are:

  • Blue whales  ⏤ One of the best things you might see on our Catalina Island boat charters are blue whales. At lengths of up to 100 ft and weighing as much as 200 tons, these majestic creatures are the largest animal to exist on earth!
  • Humpback whales  ⏤ These underwater creatures grow to an average length of 60 feet and weigh up to about 40 tons. Humpback whales delight in eating crustaceans and small fish.
  • Fin whales ⏤ The second largest whale in the world (after the blue whale) is also one of the fastest. These sleek cetaceans are known as the greyhounds of the sea!

About Tarpon Springs

The first settlers in the area now known as Tarpon Springs were A.W. Ormond and his daughter, Mary. They arrived in 1876. They built a cabin near Spring Bayou. J.C. Boyer, an adventurer from Nassau, sailed into the Bayou. He and Mary Ormond were soon married.

One year after the arrival of the Ormonds, George Inness, an American landscape artist, discovered the beauty in the Bayou. He and his son, George, Jr., painted the scenes found in the area.

Mary was very pleased with her home. She especially liked the great fish that inhabited the Bayou. They would leap into the air and spray water. In 1879, she named the small settlement Tarpon Springs. (Actually the fish were mullet, not tarpon!)

In 1880, Hamilton Disston, a wealthy saw manufacture, bought four million acres of the central west coast of Florida from the Governor for 25 cents an acre. This saved the state from bankruptcy. Included in the purchase was Tarpon Springs.

In 1884, a post office was established in Tarpon Springs. Soon the railroad arrived and a depot was built to accommodate passengers and freight. Through the efforts and investments of Disston, Tarpon Springs was fashioned into an exclusive winter resort for wealthy Northerners.

The early sponge divers created a need at the docks for eating places for the boat crews. Then as news of the industry grew, people began coming to the docks to see the sponges. Shops opened so people could buy the sponges and other souvenirs.

Sponge buyers created the Sponge Exchange in 1907. A building with a courtyard was erected in which each sponger could store his catch while awaiting the auctions that took place twice a week.

With the perfection of deep-sea diving equipment, the dollar amount of sponge harvests continued to increase. Divers were able to go deeper into the sea for longer lengths of time. For 30 years, the sponge industry was the largest industry in Florida—larger than citrus or tourism. Tarpon Springs was known as the “Sponge Capital of the World.”

In the 1940s, blight reduced the growth of sponges. By the 1950s, sponging as a profitable industry was nearly wiped out. However in the 1980s, new sponge beds were found. Now, Tarpon Springs is back to being a leader in the world’s natural sponge market. All aspects of the sponge industry are available to view in Tarpon Springs, from the harvesting of the sponges, all the way to the auctions that are now held weekly at the Sponge Docks.

In addition to seeing the history of sponge harvesting, visitors can experience the Greek influence. Greek restaurants and shops are scattered throughout the area. Seafood, Greek salads, and pastries are particularly popular. Many visitors attend Greek Festivals. St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral was modeled after the great Byzantine cathedrals such as St. Sophia Cathedral in Constantinople and is open daily to visitors.

Today, Spring Bayou, site of the first settlement, is still a delightful place. Visitors can stroll along the winding streets and see houses that reflect the grandeur of the wealthy who came to Tarpon Springs each year to escape the harsh Northern winters. Tarpon Springs still has a peacefulness and quaint charm.

In 1887, Tarpon Springs was incorporated. It had a population of 52 residents. John Cheney, a promoter associated with Disston, discovered money could be made by harvesting the sponges growing in the waters of the Gulf. Although Tarpon Springs was successful as a resort, it wasn’t long before the sponge industry became the community’s most important industry.

By 1890, the sponge industry was firmly established in Tarpon Springs. The Cheney Sponge Company sold almost a million dollars worth of sponges that year.

In the next few years, experienced divers from Greece were brought to Tarpon Springs. By using rubberized diving suits and helmets, they increased harvests. By 1905, over 500 Greek sponge divers were at work using 50 boats.

About the Anclote River

Anclote, an island on the southwest coast of Florida; also, a river flowing into the gulf at that locality dates back to early Spanish times. The Spaniards called these islands Cabo de Anclote because ships had to use a kedge to winch their way through the shallow water or the winding channels. And early French sailors called the islands Cap d’Anclote, which, of course, has the same meaning as Cabo de Anclote.

After the close of the Civil War, Frederic Meyer in 1867 settled at Anclote about one and one half miles north of the river, about 100 yards west of the Anclote cemetery. He was later followed a few months later by his brother, Franklin B. Meyer.

At the Anclote river mouth, a historian has it that there exist a clear sparkling spring only 25 feet from the beach where early buccaneers watered their ships and it’s called the “Spanish Well”. The “Spanish Well” was discovered by Vasco da Gama and Pinida early in the 16th century.

In 1528, Since the Spaniards had treated the Indians with great disgust, the Indians fought back with ever weapon they could when Pantilo Narvez attempted to water his ships at the “Spanish Well.”. Narvez tried to show the Indians his peaceful gesture but was not accepted by the Indians which gave him no other option than to give up and sail away.

Tarpon Spring did not exist until about 1875, so Tampa was the closest town that was only accessible through the forest. But Tarpon Springs became a city when the railroad was built through it and ended the dream of Anclote continuing to grow as the main community.

Dolphin Cruises Tarpon Springs, Boat Tours Tarpon Springs, River Cruise Tarpon Springs, Dolphin Cruises Tarpon Springs, Florida

Today, Anclote is a center for vacationer with it’s quiet shady streets and it’s people are satisfied with picnics, fishing and sailing their boats in the gulf and fishing down the river.

The river is endowed with saw grass marshes, sea oats, and mangroves and is one of few unspoiled lands in our coastal area.

On the gulf side of the island is a beautiful, unspoiled white sand beach stretching from the northern end all the way to the southern tip. On both the northern and southern extreme ends of the island are shallow areas that are constantly shifting due to currents and hurricanes.

The natural flora and fauna of Anclote is unique. There are ponds in the woods that have phosphorescent algae that literally glows in the dark. As you traverse across the Anclote River numerous

trees like oak, bay, magnolia, palmetto, and palm are adorned by yellow Jasmin, Spanish moss, and air plants. This natural work of art gets reflected on the clear waters of the river, along the shores, to make for a truly captivating sight.

As you pass across the clear waters you might see alligators sunbathing on the sandy banks or on dry logs, sometimes rapidly moving into the waters. You will see animals such as turtles, an eclectic array of large fishes in their underwater habitat, and different kinds of birds such as cranes, herons and other colorful birds, singing and playing, both above you and wading in crystal waters of this peaceful sanctuary.

The Anclote River is of great historical and natural importance. It has been on the maps since the mid-1500s. The river passes through the northern boundaries of Tarpon Springs, Florida, and eventually flows into the Gulf of Mexico. It makes its way from deep remote sources and across miles of elevated banks that are lush with tropical foliage. Come have fun at Spongeorama - Dolphin Cruises in Tarpon Springs - Boat Tours in Tarpon Springs - River Cruises in Tarpon Springs - Florida

A Snob's Guide to Cruising the Islands

From Indonesia to the Caribbean to the South Pacific.

cruises

There are few travel sensations quite as stirring and elemental as approaching an unknown island by sea—and knowing you’ll get to do it again tomorrow. Here’s how to channel your inner mariner.

kudanil explorer sails the islands of indonesia

No boat of your own? No problem. The French-owned three-mast Le Ponant , recently completely refurbished, has the feel of a swish private yacht, with just 16 suites, one crew member for every guest, and a new tie-up with Relais & Châteaux (the first sailing yacht to get the imprimatur). You’ll sail from Martinique to such yachtie spots as St. Lucia’s Pigeon Island, St. Vincent, the Tobago Cays, and tiny Bequia, where the most beautiful sweep of sand is named after the late Princess Margaret, who swam here off the royal yacht Britannia.

South Pacific

there is no better way to explore tahiti and her islands than aboard the luxury small ship, the ms paul gauguin

A 14-night trip around the Marquesas, Tuamotus, and Society Islands on the Paul Gauguin , which has the insider knowledge 26 years of sailing here brings, is an excellent way to experience the region’s dramatic contrasts, from Bora Bora’s aquamarine shallows to the Marquesas’ waterfalls and green cliffs. You’ll have a Polynesian BBQ at Motu Mahana, a private islet. Diver alert: The ship has a fully equipped dive center. Silver Cloud ’s 14-night voyage from Fiji to Papeete, Tahiti, throws in Tonga and the dreamy Cook Islands. Snorkeling among technicolor shoals of fish is a given, but because this is an expedition ship (converted from Silversea’s “classic” fleet), there are also hiking, cultural visits, birdwatching, and 4X4 junkets in the rainforest.

the emerald azzurra superyacht

The Australian-owned superyacht Emerald Azzurra (max. 100 passengers) heads to the Seychelles in late 2024, stopping at six Indian Ocean islands in one week. All are different: Curieuse has giant tortoises; Aride, birds; La Digue has Anse Source d’Argent, supposedly the most photographed beach in the world—a vision of giant granite boulders, white sand, and turquoise sea. The ship has its own water sports marina platform, with paddleboards, kayaks, and Seabobs—powerful underwater scooters that can dive or whizz you through the water like a dolphin.

It’s best to book a cruise through a specialist. Our go-tos: Mary Jean Tully ([email protected]) and Tom Baker ([email protected]) , who both specialize in luxury ships of all sizes, and Ashton Palmer , the guru of small ship expedition cruises ([email protected]) .

dolphin cruise ship island

The popular destination is rife with bells and whistles that cater to the adventuresome set that frequent Royal Caribbean ships, but the island is filled with tastes for all, including a new adults-only beachfront area called Hideaway Beach.

Celebrity Reflection was the first ship to visit on April 22 followed by Celebrity Beyond on April 23, both part of five-night western Caribbean sailings departing from Port Everglades, part of new shorter itineraries being offered by the premium cruise brand. Sailings also visit Bimini, Cozumel, Grand Cayman and Key West.

“Guest feedback inspired the new shorter Caribbean itineraries, designed to offer year-round opportunities to unwind with loved ones,” said Celebrity Cruises President Laura Hodges Bethge in a press release. “Introducing Perfect Day at CocoCay presents new experiences for Celebrity guests seeking quick beach getaway escapes close to home.”

dolphin cruise ship island

Once known as just Little Stirrup Cay, Royal Caribbean now calls it Perfect Day at CocoCay, which received a $250 million overhaul first in 2019 adding a 13-slide water park including the 135-foot-tall Devil’s Peak that is one of seven slides on the castle-like tower that acts as an icon that can be seen from around the 125-acre resort.

It also added a dock that allows for two ships to come alongside instead of having to take day visitors with tender vessels. Nearby Great Stirrup Cay, which is used primarily by Norwegian Cruise Line, still relies on tenders, but recently announced it too would build a ship dock.

It also features a colorful helium balloon ride called Up, Up and Away that takes passengers up 450 feet on the rare calm days it’s not too windy, a 1,600-foot zip line and the largest wave pool in the Caribbean.

Those fall under the “Thrill” side of the island, but there’s plenty on the “Chill” side as well, including the Coco Beach Club, which includes a series of over-water cabanas with hammocks and personal slides plus more beachside cabanas, an infinity pool and a higher-end Mediterranean dining venue.

This image shows Hideaway Beach in January 2024, a new adults-only area on Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)

The newest feature on the island, though, opened in January. Hideaway Beach is the first part of the island to be kid-free. It has its own private beach and lagoon, two pools, seven food and drink locations and 20 cabanas.

Spending time at Hideaway Beach is designed to be an all-day experience at an extra charge for those 18 and older. Prices start at $39-$89 per person depending on sail date with the 20 cabanas available for an additional rate.

The On the Rocks bar, classic sports bar with pool and bar shuffleboard, is at one end of Hideaway Beach with views of the ship at dock, seen here in this January 2024 file photo. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)

The space includes the al fresco On the Rocks bar with live musicians, live sports on TV and even a pool table and shuffleboard with great views of the dock along the island’s rocky shore.

The lagoon is surrounded by loungers, hammocks and in-water swingsets while the Hideaway Bar is the central swim-up bar in the main pool while there are two full-service Beach Bars on either side of the area as well.
