Welsh singer-songwriter Marina Lambrini Diamandis (born 10th October 1985), better known by her stage name as Marina and the Diamonds, found success with her indie electropop since releasing her debut in 2010.

Marina displayed an interest in music and performance form an early age, attending various schools and universities but never finding the right course for her. Beginning to create her own music, she gradually developed a strong fan base for her left-field pop, uploading her self-produced compositions online. Finding influence from Britney Spears and Gwen Stefani, Marina's music blended keyboard driven ballads with lively glam pop, tied together with her soulful voice.

Marina signed to independent label, Neon Gold, in 2009, releasing her first single, "Obsessions/Mowgli's Road" shortly after. Her "Crown Jewels" EP arrived later that year, featuring the number 12 hit single, "Hollywood." Following these initial releases, Marina then dived into the British festival circuit, playing at the likes of Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds Festival and Bestival. Returning to the studio in 2010, her debut album arrived in February that year, titled "The Family Jewels," which debuted at number five in the UK Album Chart.

It was two years before Marina returned with a new album, having toured extensively, supporting the likes of Katy Perry on an international tour. In April 2012, "Electra Heart" arrived, a concept album dealing with ideas of female identity. The album became a huge success, bolstered by the popularity of the preceding singles, "Radioactive" and "Primadonna," with the latter peaking at number 11 in the UK Singles Chart. The album itself reached the top spot of the UK Album Chart, as well as fairing well on the US Billboard 200, peaking at number 31. Marina then embarked on several tours, gaining a support slot for Coldplay on their "Mylo Xyloto" tour in 2013.

Live reviews

Marina and the Diamonds is very dear to me, and thinking about this concert brings back so many good memories. I got to see her with my best friend a few years ago, and that concert was our first concert that we'd ever been to. That night was full of lights, colors, hearts, dancing and amazing music that I'll never forget. I saw Marina and the Diamonds at Park West, which is a nice venue where people have access to seating and a bar, and there is also a big section in the front where people can stand. My friend and I were fortunate to get really good spots close to the stage, which was set up like a parlor in a house. There was a sofa and coat rack with shawls and fluffy jackets hung on it. Looking around me, I could tell that Marina had loyal fans. People had signs and pictures of Marina that they held up, many had painted hearts on their cheeks to resemble her tattoo, and one person even had this customized denim vest that had a picture of Marina's face painted on the back. Multiple fans even passed forward letters and gifts that they had brought for her that she graciously accepted. Still to this day, I have never seen that many people go all-out in showing their love and appreciation for an artist during a live performance. After the room went dark, and the stage backdrop slowly lit up with the words "Electra Heart," the crowd was full of anticipation, waiting for the moment when the woman of the hour would make her appearance. When we all finally got a glimpse of her coming onto the stage, the whole venue was ecstatic. Marina is beautiful. She first came out to a room full of crazily excited fans, me included, in a white dress with a wedding veil and white gloves. She blew the crowd away by starting out with her anthem "Homewrecker," and from the start of that song, I could tell that she knew how to put on a show. Marina didn't just stick to wearing her opening outfit. She would periodically change her outfits, using the clothes from the coat rack throughout the night. She also had other props on the stage that she used, like the sofa that she gracefully lounged on while singing a song. Marina engaged with the crowd, holding out her hand so people could touch her, and would crack jokes in between songs. She even introduced her band, and I could tell that she was very appreciative of such enthusiastic fans who knew the words to all her songs. That night was full of nonstop energy, and I loved every minute of it. For the encore, Marina came out in a different dress and played "Teen Idle" on the keyboard without the band. She impressively sounds even better live compared to the audio recordings. Closer to the end of the show, Marina kept reaching out to the audience, and my friend and I finally touched her hand! Marina went out with a bang. She threw heart-shaped confetti out into the crowd, and showed everyone just how vocally talented she was. I remember leaving the venue exhausted but overly excited about what I just experienced. That night, I lost my concert-virginity to Marina and the Diamonds, and I haven't regretted it since.

Nothing could have prepared me for when Marina stepped onto the stage. I am normally a cold, relatively emotionless person. But, when Mowgli's Road started up and this goddess of a woman stepped onto the stage, I was nearly in tears. She's just that magnetic.

I haven't been a fan for long, so I came into this concert with moderate expectations. I was expecting a few of her older songs with an emphasis on her songs from her most recent album, Froot. Thus, when I realized how theatrical her show was, I was blown away. From the images and clips on the screens behind her moving in perfect time with her music to the masterful light show, Marina and the Diamonds sets the bar that much higher for other musicians in the genre.

Every song had the entire crowd singing along. Marina, seeing how interactive we were, took it further and would give us cues during the songs. She would yell "EVERYBODY JUMP," and everyone started bouncing around. She would yell "DANCE," and everyone started moving as one. She made you feel like you were the only person there, despite the fact that the show I went to was completely sold out. It was incredible. I can't even pick out one song in particular that made all of us go wild, as every single song had the entire audience screaming in excitement.

So, if you have the chance to see Marina and the Diamonds live, DO SO. My biggest regret at the moment is not seeing her sooner!

Marina Diamandis, the Greek/Welsh alternative pop starlet has made a name for herself following two acclaimed albums. Her last, 'Electra Heart' was a concept LP featured around a destructive fictional heroin who Marina adopts as a sort of bizarre alter-ego when performing live.

The haunting introduction to 'Homewrecker' begins and the audience cheer manically as Marina/Electra appears dressed in a sickly sweet pink dress, veil and bouquet in hand. Her vocal is impressive in its versatility as from the operatic like intro to the far more pop oriented chorus and verse it never falters. Her devoted fan base sing along proudly as Marina conducts her diamonds throughout the show.

Her stage persona is fantastic and she stays true to her Electra ego throughout. A true performer during the likes of 'Shampain' and 'Primadonna' she whips the crowd into a frenzy of excitement. Her more poignant moments come during the balladic 'Fear & Loathing' and 'Teen Idle' where she allows the emotion of Electra to take centre stage in a sincere manner. It is back to the princess party for 'How To Be A Heartbreaker' as Marina becomes Electra for a final time to really indulge in the bitchy, twisted American teen queen mentality and her crowd simply adore it.

To put it bluntly, Marina is one of those artists where once is never enough, but to expand on that, coming from a more metal/rock background, Marina was my first experience of a "pop" concert, and despite having no experience of artists other than those pretty much walking on stage and getting on with it, the whole Marina experience blew my mind, from projections to costume changes for various songs, stage props etc.

The concerts I have seen have been a treat for both the eyes and ears, as her career has developed from the family jewels era to the newer electra heart period, Marina has never failed to put on an amazing show, live she's constantly in motion, the complete antithesis to artists who remain motionless pretty much throughout their set, and crowd interaction is very high on her list of skills, as well as her flawless voice.

What makes the experience complete is the high probability of meeting Marina afterwards as well, where from my experiences, she can't do enough for her fans afterwards, and has an amazing memory for the regulars. So, yes, Marina comes highly recommended

She was so good!!

I saw her at the Roundhouse in London and I was standing with my dad. We got to the venue at the same time as the doors opened and we still had a really good view of the stage and didn't feel like we should have come earlier.

Marina was absolutely marvellous; her three outfits were all gorgeous and she looked wonderful. More importantly, her voice was absolutely stunning and she did not miss a single note among the 20 or so songs she sang! It helped that I knew every song she did sing as a couple of her songs do sound a bit similar but they all sounded great.

The audience mainly consisted of teenage girls and their boyfriends and some gay couples but generally the audience were nice and not disruptive or wild.

I would definitely see her again as her singing was both insanely impressive and really enjoyable! cute personality too

Definitely worth it!

This tour was a 3-act performance which I don't think I've ever seen anyone do before, where she did a few songs from the first album, some more from the second, and then capped it off with a bigger selection of songs from the current album. For each of the songs there was a song-related background on some amazing stage production as well as a different outfit including my favorite, a blue sparkly sequin dress with a cape and a cherry on top.

With the way the sets were done, she did all the expected favorites, sounded amazing, and it was definitely a show that was equal to someone who's been around for a lot more than 3 albums worth of material. Miles above the bands that just play around with a few lights and everyone stands on their spots, absolutely worth seeing when she comes around again.

This Primadonna Girl really came through at the Met in Philadelphia last nite.

She sang all her old and new tunes with simple but with a very effective set, lighting and dancers.

Several songs were sung live with her music videos in sync on one big video screen.

I liked the simplicity of the show. No crazy fire effects nor "Over the top lighting and unnecessary sound effects.

At times you felt you were taken into the songs

as you listened to her play the sing as she played the piano and watched the ballet style dancers perform to each beat of the music.

Her talents are highly underrated. The encore song "Heartbreaker" had everyone in the house standing up and dancing, including me and I'm 68 years old.

See Marina on this short US tour.

Marina was absolutely amazing. Her sets were impressive, dancers inspiring, and vocals stunning. Even her opening act was great and received a standing ovation at the end of her set. My only complaint was the location of the concert. The Ryman is a good location for comedy shows, not a music venue. My view was obstructed by three poles and the low overhanging balcony. I had to stand in the aisle in order to see anything and was eventually scolded by an usher. Additionally, the seats were pews, which made it difficult to dance. Overall, the performance was amazing but I will not be returning to the venue in the future for a concert.

Marina is just amazing.

i've been wanting to see her live for years and I finally got the chance!

I'm from Norway originally, studying in Chicago, and the instant I saw that she was coming here I bought a ticket !

The doors opened at 6 and I got there at 18:25, and there was like 2 blocks of line. Never seen a line that long for a concert I've been too. The concert was sold out too.

Marina came on stage starting with Mowgli's road and from that second to the end of the night, she crushed every single note she sang. She was amazing live and was everything I hoped for :)

What a Show!! Marina and the Diamonds performed at NYC's Webster Hall to a sold out show of die hard fans! She came on stage right on time to a roaring crowd. She opened with Bubblegum Bitch in a pink and black striped bodysuit. Amazing! Her set included a bunch of new songs from her latest release Froot and a sprinkle of favs from past albums. It was an amazing show, her voice was perfect and had a great energy on stage. If she comes to your town, GO SUPPORT HER and get tickets, you won't be disappointed!!

It would be amazing to see u live❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Please come to Florida🥺❤️

My first ever concert and I’m so glad it was MARINA. Set my standards so high for concerts I can’t wait for her to tour again!!!

I went to the AZ Panic concert this year mainly because Marina was one of the openers. It was upsetting that earlier this year she did not come to Arizona on her ancient dreams tour (I totally understand, there's a lot of places to hit). Marina, as always, put on a great show. Two days prior, she even had the flu and had to couldn't perform that day. It was truly a dream to see her in person performing. I would recommend going to see her to everyone. Even if you just want to attend a fun concert, Marina is the way to go. If you are a die-hard fan like me, if you have the ability to attend, you wouldn't want to miss out on this experience.

I almost cried

Marina was amazing and she was only the opener! It was too short but the set list was perfect. Her voice is perfect she is perfect!!!

One of the best nights of my life

I went to her concert in September when she was an opening act with P!TAD and she was as amazing as i expected. Her voice is so angelic and it sounds even better irl. I wasnt let down at all besides it being such a short set, I was just getting into it and she was leaving. Hopefully she’ll come back to Columbus so I can go to a full Marina concert. Maybe for album 6! Definitely go if you get the chance because she’s an incredible vocalist and performer.

Saw her open for PATD. Great energy, sung a lot of her best songs, really got the crowd pumped. Looking forward to seeing her by herself in concert next time!

Marina was fabulous...the opener not so much

Marina was fabulous...the opener not so much. After about five minutes I realized that: a) the opener had no stage presence whatsoever, and b) the singer didn't know how to work a microphone (she'd be singing about something, and at one moment (when the microphone was close to her mouth) she would be very LOUD, and then she'd move the microphone away from her mouth and would sound like a whisper) - initially I thought the venue had bad acoustics, then I realized it was the singer, not the venue, and c) the band were amateurs. Somebody needed to "get the hook." Marina, on the other hand, was fabulous. She has great material, an amazing voice, great stage presence, and actively engaged with the audience. She's also an amazing dancer. I felt bad for one of her backup dancers because she was holding a fluorescent tube that wasn't lit (unlike everyone else's - one would think that the stagehands would have checked this beforehand?). It was a bit odd that they got about halfway through the song before someone finally replaced the burnt-out item with a lit-up item, but whatever. Her drummer was also fabulous, but unfortunately we never saw him as he was in the back and in the dark. The background light show was also quite spectacular. Overall it was a great show, but I could have done without the opener.

Great show!

Marina put on a great show as always. My only criticism is that 10:00 PM is far too late for a weekday night show to be starting. I would have never purchased tickets if that had been advertised as being that late.

MARINA SO GOOD

It was really awesome but the only thing that sucked was that the security inside the Orpheum were really pushy and unfriendly during the performance and such

Fantastic experience!

This is the second time I've seen Marina live, and she's been spectacular both times! If you get the chance to see her show, don't pass it up.

Never disappoints

This was my third time seeing Marina and definitely my favorite. The venue was gorgeous! Love the Orpheum. Of course, the show itself was amazing. I will never get over how incredible her voice is live. The energy, performance, dancers, etc. if I could rate it more than five stars I would.

Great but...

Too many people cutting to the front security had to keep sending them back, would of been better if it was just general admission

I'm a RUIN

Marina was incredible! Great performance, vocals and stage presence. So beautiful I cried during the show.

It would have been an amaxing experience . . .

Sadly, because of Hurricane Dorian in Nova Scotia, I wasn't able to get to Marina's concert in Montreal. I still have the tickets, but that's all I have :( My brother worked with Marina on a number of her songs 7 or 8 years ago and I have been a huge fan ever since. My mom had purchased the tickets for my 17th birthday . . . I really hope to see her sometime soon.

She alive on stage and really gives it her all... one of the best concerts I’ve scene at M-Telus.

The concert was amazing and the venue was perfect as well.

Marina

Actually, her name’s Marina ! On Thursday (Feb. 14), the pop star formerly known as Marina and the Diamonds announced her new double album LOVE + FEAR is on its way.

On social media, the Welsh singer revealed that each half of the forthcoming LP will contain eight tracks — making a complete set of 16 songs — and that the dual album is slated for release on April 26.

See latest videos, charts and news

The announcement follows the release of “Handmade Heaven,” Marina’s first solo single in over four years, which saw the now-eponymous star return to her near-operatic roots on the lushly angelic mid-tempo track.

On Twitter, the “Primadonna” songstress also announced the first leg of her upcoming headlining tour, which kicks off on April 29 in the U.K. More shows in the rest of the world will be announced soon.

LOVE + FEAR will be Marina’s first studio album since 2015’s Froot , as well as the first since dropping her “and the Diamonds” stage name earlier this year. Check out the album announcement and tour dates below.

Marina Found a ‘Magical New Form of Expression’ Through Poetry. Now She’s Releasing a Book.

By Tomás Mier

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission.

Marina Diamandis was on shrooms a few years ago, writing what she thought were lyrics for new music. A few days later, she looked at everything she had written and realized she wanted to go beyond just songs.

“I tried, and it just felt so weird,” she tells Rolling Stone . “I suddenly was like, ‘I think these are poems, actually.’ As soon as I accepted that, I started writing poetry every single day. For a whole summer, it was every single morning.”

What came out of those writing sessions was Eat the World , Marina’s debut poetry book , which Rolling Stone can exclusively announce will drop Oct. 29 via Penguin Random House.

The book intertwines Diamandis’ musings with gorgeous artwork as the singer explores her experiences with dating, reflects on some dark moments in her life, and examines her early career and her “Marina and the Diamonds” days with compassion.

From her home in Los Angeles, Diamandis spoke about several of her Eat the World ‘s poems and gave Rolling Stone an update about her upcoming music:

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

How are songwriting and poetry writing different for you? I’ve discovered this magical new form of expression where I can still story-tell like I do with my songs, but I’m able to be way more honest and open about things that is just not possible with songwriting. I love the element of fantasy still with pop and with concepts, and sometimes, you have to forego a little bit of the objectivity of a situation for that. So with poetry, it’s completely different. It’s like I’m able to play with and process the past in a completely different format. It’s like there’s no rules.

What have you learned about yourself through the process? I really learned about the parts of myself that I wasn’t comfortable with at all. I think, on the subject of relationships, they’re amazing because they are mirrors for us. Even being out of relationship, if something ends or if you’re doing random dating, all of those things just show us different parts of ourselves. The book has allowed me the space to be able to explore thing I wasn’t happy about myself in a way that I just don’t think I could have with music.

Joan Baez Announces First-Ever Poetry Book. Bernie Taupin Already Loves It

‘feud: capote vs. the swans’: inside the scandalous real-life story, ‘the o.c.’ at 20: the chaotic making of a teen tv classic.

One poem, “Proof of Time” seems to be an encapsulation of what you think Los Angeles is: a plastic kingdom, perhaps. What inspired that one? I’m obsessed with L.A., but sometimes I cannot get over this feeling that nothing is old. It feels so strange coming from Europe, particularly Greece and Wales, where everything is old as fuck. That poem is about longing for something deeper rooted to give me that sense of belonging. I was trying to fuse this feeling of this very modern culture, like lip fillers and butt lifts and plastic keychains on Hollywood Boulevard with this sense of history that comes the earth here: the nature, the canyons, the history of the Tongva tribe that lived here for 7,000 years before they all got wiped out.

What does the “Eat the World” poem reflect about the rest of the book? It was one of the first poems I wrote. I wanted to encapsulate this feeling I’d had throughout my teens and my twenties that drove a lot of my work at the time. It’s like this insatiable need to be loved, essentially, and no matter what you achieve, there’s nothing that can really fill it permanently. I don’t feel like it’s tapping into negative things. I think it was just a reflection on how things were, and I wrote that when I got out of my record deal with Atlantic. It was a real end of an era where I could look at how I had been. I don’t think I really am looking for validation in the same way at all. I think now, it’s just like, is it fun? Is it going to contribute something positive in the world? Otherwise, why am I doing it?

★ EAT THE WORLD ★ pic.twitter.com/NdEN15CsRL — MARINA (@MarinaDiamandis) February 1, 2023

It seems like you’re going through a transitional time in your life. Definitely. I don’t even know what’s coming with music. All I know is that I feel different, and I also don’t feel in a mad rush. I feel like this next record’s going to be important, and I think the poetry book is also reflective of that. I’m able to take a left turn and do something that was genuinely just for the joy of doing it. I’m in a separate part of my memory bank. That’s how it feels.

You seem more free. Are you? Yes. I am. Thanks for noticing.

The Wait Is Over: Billie Eilish Announces New Album 'Hit Me Hard and Soft'

The far right is crawling with eclipse conspiracy theories, dream theater on emotional mike portnoy reunion, first 40th anniversary tour dates, little big town, sugarland announce 2024 'take me home' tour.

How has your relationship with the Electra Heart, Family Jewels era changed?  I feel so much more compassion for that version of myself. It feels very far away. It is hard to even watch interviews from that time, because I’m like, “Who is she?” Whenever I hear those records, I love them. I love my past, and it also always helps to listen to them right before I’m doing a new record. Because I want to know where I’ve come from, and what I’d like to bring in, what energy I want to bring in. I think this time, it’s an opportunity to do something really different.

You mentioned you’re working on new music. What’s the update on that? I’ve been writing for six months. It’s still at the beginning. I haven’t started producing anything yet. Part of me is desperate to get things out, but also, part of me is just saying, “Enjoy this process.” Because this is my favorite thing: to build the record and build the world around it. I don’t have any timeline yet, but sooner rather than later. I know it’s been a while, but I’ve had things going on.

As ever with the Masters, Augusta National Golf Club, a private club in Augusta, Georgia is the host venue. It’s the only one of the four men’s major championships that is played every year on the same course.

No winner of the Par 3 Contest has gone on to win the Masters in the same year.

What is the format of the Masters?

The Masters is a 72-hole individual strokeplay tournament contested over four rounds.

How many players are in the field?

The Masters has the smallest field of the four men's majors.

As of April 1, 88 players are projected to be teeing it up.

That could rise to 89 if the winner of the Valero Texas Open, held from April 4-7 on the PGA TOUR, is not already in the field.

How many players make the cut at the Masters?

Players must be in the top 50 places, counting ties, to make the 36-hole cut.

What is the Masters play-off format?

Unlike the other three Majors, the Masters features a sudden-death playoff.

The first play-off hole is the 18th and should that not determine a winner, players move to the 10th. Both holes run parallel to each other. This sequence is repeated until someone emerges victorious.

The last play-off was in 2017, when Sergio Garcia overcame Justin Rose.

Who is the defending champion?

Jon Rahm claimed his first Green Jacket with a four-shot victory last year as the Spaniard won his second Major Championship, following his first at the 2021 U.S. Open.

Who is in action?

Click here for a full list of everyone who is listed as expected to play and how they earned their spot.

What are some of the key storylines heading into the event?

Rahm is seeking to become the fourth player to win back-to-back Masters, following Jack Nicklaus (1965-1966), Nick Faldo (1989-1990) and Tiger Woods (2001-2002)

World Number Two Rory McIlroy will become the sixth player to win all four men's majors if he wins, emulating Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods

World Number One Scottie Scheffler, champion at Augusta National in 2022, has finished no worse than a tie for 17th in his eight starts so far this year, claiming two titles in that time

Four DP World Tour members, Ludvig Åberg, Matthieu Pavon, Nicolai Højgaard and Ryo Hisatsune, are making their Masters debuts

15-time Major champion Woods is set to make just his second appearance of 2024, five years on from winning his fifth Masters

How many Race to Dubai points does the Masters winner receive?

There are a total of 10,000 Race to Dubai ranking points to be played for, with 1,665 going to the winner assuming they are a DP World Tour member.

What is Amen Corner?

Amen Corner is the name for a three-hole stretch of the course beginning with the par four 11th hole, and including the par three 12th and par five 13th.

The holes are named White Dogwood (No. 11), Golden Bell (No. 12) and Azalea (No. 13).

The phrase, Amen Corner, was first used by Herbert Warren Wind in the 1958 edition of  Sports Illustrated .

When is the Champions Dinner?

The Champions Dinner, held on the Tuesday of Masters week, began in 1952 when defending champion Ben Hogan gave a dinner for all previous winners.

Hogan proposed the formation of a Masters Club, limited to only Masters Champions.

Honorary memberships were extended to founders Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts and subsequently Bill Lane, Hord Hardin, Jack Stephens, Hootie Johnson, Billy Payne and Fred Riley have been added as honorary members of this most exclusive of clubs.

This year’s meal, chosen by defending champion Rahm, will give past winners a taste of his home Basque region, as part of variety of dishes hailing from Spanish cuisine.

See below for his Champions Dinner menu.
