Brace yourselves sisters! The heavenly smash-hit musical Sister Act heads to Newcastle Theatre Royal during June 2023.

We caught up with TV favourite Lesley Joseph (Birds of a Feather) who plays Mother Superior alongside Sandra Marvin ( Emmerdale, Waitress ) who plays Deloris Van Cartier and West End sensation Lizzie Bea ( Heathers The Musical, Hairspray ) as Sister Mary Robert to find out more about this sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship, sisterhood and music.

sister act tour newcastle

You’re well known to many as Dorien Green from Birds of a Feather alongside your stage work, which includes an Olivier-nomination for Young Frankenstein . What are the key differences between the disciplines of stage and screen, and do you have a preference? If you asked me why I came into the business, it would be because I love theatre. I went to drama school in the 60s, and it was a very different world then. I grew up doing theatre and started first when I was seven. Theatre was always what I was destined to do and then gradually television took over. Birds of a Feather came along in 1989 and has never been off since! I love television, I love the opportunities television brings, but if I had to choose it would be theatre because I love the connection with the audience. With television can always do it again, whereas with theatre it’s a question of doing it that night and that’s your one chance. I think theatre is where my heart is. I love the atmosphere and the family you build. I love to stand in the wings and watch other people work. I also love what theatre can do to an audience. Live theatre can change people’s lives.

Sister Act is a much-loved movie as well as a musical. Were you aware of the show before joining? I saw Craig Revel Horwood’s Sister Act revival with Alexandra Burke, so I was very aware of the show before I joined. The musical doesn’t have the music from the film, but it’s Alan Menken’s music - who is a genius. He’s been to see our show twice and loved it! I think people love the production because of the great music, and it’s very much an audience show. You leave feeling so uplifted. We were playing in London to 3,000 people per night, with every show packed full of people waving their arms in the air at the end and just having a fantastic time.

sister act tour newcastle

Can you briefly summarise the plot (without spoilers), and tell us about your character, Mother Superior? Well, Deloris Van Cartier witnesses her boyfriend shoot someone and gets put into hiding in a convent. Mother Superior who runs the convent is a very religious person, and suddenly into her world comes this woman who is a singer, who wears short skirts, who’s full of bling and very over the top. It’s about how these two worlds combine and ultimately rub off on each other. Mother Superior is quite strict and holy. She provides the juxtaposition of strict religious beliefs against this entirely over the top being, which is Deloris Van Cartier. You need the two extremes to rub up against one another, and quite a lot of sparks fly.

sister act tour newcastle

You appeared on Pilgrimage: The Road to Rome and met the Pope, what was that like and were there any elements of that experience that you’ve drawn on when playing Mother Superior?   Funnily enough whenever I’m in the show I do always think of this moment. I had half an hour with the Pope and I blessed him and made him laugh, and he gave me a medal to celebrate his six years in the papacy. I’ve always had a spirituality about me. I love going in churches. Whenever I go into a church I will always light a candle for both of my parents and Linda Robson’s mum, and say a quiet prayer. That’s a spiritual thing more than an actual religious thing. I always find churches very healing in a way. It’s a place to sit, contemplate and meditate, and you can come out feeling a slightly better person.

sister act tour newcastle

I think the soundtrack is amazing. I must say, the audience responses so far have made me feel like we’re doing a pop concert. My favourite song is one that Mother Superior has called ‘Here Within These Walls’ where she describes what life is like in the convent, and how the outside world is full of sin, but inside you find God and you find yourself. It’s a beautiful number, but probably the most serious number in the show to an extent. The other number I love is when Deloris first takes over the choir and she teaches them to sing and brings out their voices. It’s called ‘Raise Your Voice’. The audience just go wild. Up until then you’ve only heard the nuns sing very badly. It stops the show!

What do you hope audiences take away from this new production? I think audiences will take away a reinvigorated love for live theatre. It’s a production that also says something about community, and that’s one thing that the lockdown showed us was important – caring about your neighbours, caring about your friends, and helping those in need. It’s an absolutely joyous musical! To see the audiences at the end, where they stand waving their arms and singing along, they rediscover the joy of theatre.

sister act tour newcastle

Is there a piece of advice you’ve received or that you would pass on to anyone hoping to go into the creative industry? I don’t know if you remember a man called Quentin Crisp, he was very flamboyant and wonderful, and way before his time. He was avant-garde and he was an amazing character. He always used to call me ‘Miss Joseph’. His piece of advice was, ‘Miss Joseph, believe in fate, but lean forward where fate can see you’. I think that’s one of the best pieces of advice I could give to anybody.

P re-pandemic, the musical theatre scene fizzed with something of a buzz for an announced revival of Sister Act The Musical promising something of a twist. Not only would it be overseen by OG ‘Deloris’, Oscar-winner Whoopi Goldberg , but so too would it be a hybridised version of the stage musical, intercut with some of the jukebox hits from the film.

And then? Enter COVID-19, stage left.

Four years on, it seems that perhaps God does, after all, move in mysterious ways. For whilst ‘ Act ’ MkII would have no doubt been an interesting curio to visit, and few would likely have denied the appeal of seeing Goldberg back involved in the habit, on the merits of this most fabulous new London and touring production that materialised, our stagey prayers were answered, anyway.

Wisely abandoning much of the tinkering and restyling done by Craig Revel Horwood in his 2016/17 tour of the show – not least of all its somewhat divisive ‘actor-muso’ infusion – Sister Act 2023 brings itself much closer in line with the original, celebrated West End production. Like the film that inspired it, it tells the story of washed-up lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier ( Sandra Marvin ) who, after witnessing her gangster boyfriend murdering a mole, goes on the run and, eventually, into hiding in a struggling nunnery.

“Sister Act takes so much of the fish-out-of-water hijinks that made the film such a smash and dials them up to eleven…”

On stage, Sister Act takes so much of the fish-out-of-water hijinks that made the film such a smash and dials them up to eleven, as brass, sassy Deloris butts heads (and, indeed, butts) with the convent’s no-nonsense Mother Superior ( Lesley Joseph ) whilst forming an unlikely and wholesome friendship with the Nuns about her. Characters grow. Lessons are learnt. And, for the stage, it’s all given a glitzy, sequinned gloss thanks to being transplanted to the ’70s. A move that lends a perfectly apt disco styling, only solidified by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater ’s terrific score that offers echoes of everything of the era from Studio 54 to The Jackson Five and even a soupçon of Marvin Gaye .

The show’s got good, groovy ‘bones’, then. Which always helps, but a show as spunky, funky and funny as Sister Act will live or die by its cast. So praise whatever deity gives you your ‘Sunday Morning Fever’, then, for the utterly joyful ensemble of this latest Act . Without any egress or sensationalism, this is one of the most divine companies you could wish to watch treading the boards (and raising the roof).

Front and centre is the ever-fabulous Sandra Marvin , who, vocal powerhouse as ever, proves herself a formidable comedienne here, too. It’s a quite perfect blessing of performer and role, and right from her toe-tapping, scene-setting double-whammy opener of ‘Take Me To Heaven’ and ‘Fabulous, Baby!’, you know from the outset that not only are you in safe hands, not only has this Act got its Deloris down pat, but a damn high bar has been set that, amazingly, Marvin’s co-stars manage to routinely play up to, as well. It’s giddying fun to revisit the tour many months in and see Marvin continuing to plough every scene and set piece for new beats of sass and funny, and taking her numbers to new places, too; see a particularly soulful rendition of the titular ballad this time round, for instance.

Lizzie Bea continues her ascent as a leading lady of the stage on the rise, with a beautifully observed take on the timid but kindly Sister Mary Robert. Her Act II soul searcher, ‘The Life I Never Led’ is breathtakingly strong.   Alfie Parker makes for a loveable Eddie, benefiting from one of the evening’s best and funniest numbers. On a similar note, special mention must go to Castell Parker , who stepped in for the performance reviewed to cover the role of TJ – one of a trio of bumbling henchmen – and put in a superb, soulful performance alongside Damian Buhagiar and  Tom Hopcroft, all of whom were on hilarious form stealing scenes (and hearts!) aplenty.

“It’s giddying fun to revisit the tour many months in and see Marvin continuing to plough every scene and set piece for new beats of sass and funny…”

Catherine Millsom and Anne Smith take on Kathy Najimy and Mary Wickes’ supporting Nuns from the film, and they are each utterly joyous and hilariously cranky, respectively. And you can’t help but be bowled over by the wonderful Lesley Joseph , still belting out the numbers and cutting a rug at the venerable age of 77. Joseph  felt notably more confident in and vocally resonant in the role of Mother Superior this time round, too (having first played Sister Mary Lazarus to Jennifer Saunders ‘ Mother Superior), and is a hoot during the cantakerous, unglamorous frustrations of ‘Haven’t got a prayer’. And naturally, being the complete pro that she is, Joseph handled a minor staging malfunction during that very number with consummate wit and flair.

For somewhat mystifying reasons, Morgan Large ’s otherwise showy and suitably vibrant staging is noticeably pared back for its residency in Wolverhampton and these later tour venues. Some visual flourishes – such as Deloris ascending on a giant glitter ball for her ‘Fabulous, Baby!’ reprise – are notably absent, and entire portions of the set’s framing have been chopped, leaving the stage occasionally feeling a trifle bare when it ventures too far from the convent. It’s still a funky, glitzy piece to look at, though, and despite some of these noticeable edits, it looks great framed within the Grand auditorium. It’s just a pity to see it stripped back from its former, dazzling opulence.

There remains, of course, plenty of fun character beats and staging wrinkles to enjoy – watch as Deloris’ ‘sisters’ pop out from inside cupboards, beneath beds and other peekaboo surprises, in a move reminiscent of the postmodern quirks of Marianne Elliot ‘s recent revival of Company .

“It’s difficult to imagine a more consistently uplifting, irrepressible and entertaining evening of musical theatre…”

These minor quibbles aside though, for the most part everything here just works . And does so at such a consistently high level, it’s difficult to imagine a more consistently uplifting, irrepressible and entertaining evening of musical theatre.

We almost didn’t get this glittering, pitch-perfect incarnation of Sister Act The Musical . This transcendent joyful noise of camp, colourful fabulousness. And, whilst there will likely always be some with a modicum of curiosity as to what form the previously-announced hybrid Act could have taken, and ponder how successful chopping up Menken and Slater’s score to make room for jukebox classics may have been, on the basis of this gorgeous cast, still-glitzy presentation and all-round divine treat that is Sister Act The Musical , one can’t help but have another tried-and-test homily spring to mind, too.

Namely – if it ain’t broke, don’t crucifix it.

The show is based on the 1992 film of the same name, which starred Whoopi Goldberg. It tells the story of the diva (ish) Vegas type lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier ( LANDI OSHINOWO ) who witnesses her mobster boyfriend commit a murder, in case you’d forgotten it was Harvey Kietel who played him in the movie. To escape him, the police put her in witness protection in probably the last place you’d expect to find a potty-mouth nightclub singer – a convent full of nuns.

If you’ve seen the movie you’ll know exactly where the story is going, but the show has a fresh lease of life on stage. Setting it in 1977 Philadelphia is actually a touch of genius. Somehow the disco era works so well and when you throw in the glitter and sequins, you have a night in disco heaven (no pun intended).

Like pretty much everyone in the audience last night, I love the movie, but for me I actually think it works even better on stage. Perhaps it’s the incredible music from Oscar-winning composer  ALAN MENKEN , the guy who did  Beauty and the Beast  and  The Little Mermaid ) lyrics are by his collaborator  GLENN SLATER .

This is where the stage show is very different. It doesn’t use any of the ‘ hit songs ‘ in the film, instead, we get new numbers which I guarantee won’t disappoint. The musical soundtrack is every bit as good as that in the movie, in fact I’m hard pressed to remember any of the original tunes as I still have the new ones playing in my head.

Delores, or Sister Mary Clarence as she becomes, is the star of the show, and Landi delivers a fantastic performance. Landi has been in everything from Shrek to Sweet Soul Music, but from her huge smile, as she belted out great songs, she looked tlike she was having as much fun as we were. She is really great in the part and boy can she belt out a song. She’s everything you’d want in Delores, a bit of swagger, a lot of sass and plenty of sympathy as her character grows.

“SISTER ACT THE MUSICAL IS A HEAVENLY TREAT AND DEVILISHLY GOOD FUN.”

I remember last year when Mother Superior came onto the stage, played by LESLEY JOSEPH , there was a bit of a gasp around the auditorium, and it was the same last night. That could have something to do with Lesley being a part of our entertainment world for so long. With Dorien in Birds of a Feather for nearly 35 years and an impressive stage resume including Shakespeare, Young Frankenstein, and of course a massive helping of Pantomime.

Lesley fills those nuns shoes perfectly, although I did again detect a little glint of Dorien in her eyes, and the audience loved it. Lesley is a bit of a show stealer when she’s on stage, you can’t take your eyes off her, she is superb.

sister act tour newcastle

You know you’re onto a winner before you take your seat. Absolutely memorable show tunes, particularly the main song ‘ Take Me To Heaven ‘ sung by Dolores. With  BILL BUCKHURST  directing and some fantastic choreography from  ALISTAIR DAVID  which ticks every ‘must-see’ box. There is still something uplifting about watching the nuns dance so precisely on stage.

The set too is spot-on with credit to designer  MORGAN LARGE . You hear the words big production used a lot in the theatre, but Sister Act really does feel big, with no expense spared. I love that what we get on our stage with the tour is every bit as good, and sometimes better than West-End standard and that is definitely the case with Sister Act.

You can see the main part of the set below, it’s all stained glass windows of the convent and fabulous lighting. The stage is filled with sparkle and disco lights and is every changing. There are parts coming in and leaving to move us smoothly along the storyline.

No matter how good a set is, or how perfect those costumes are – and believe me the outfits are next level in this production. It’s what the cast deliver on stage which counts, and Sister Act is a full on company of talented performers.

There’s a few set pieces in the show and one is from Eddie Souther, the cop in the story, played majestically by  ALFIE PARKER . There’s a brilliant routine which sees him whipping off his uniform to reveal an outfit far removed from his day job. I won’t spoil it too much but as he sang ‘ I Could Be That Guy ‘, last night’s audience whooped and cheered along to his song. It was heartfelt and filled with disco camp in equal measures.

We all loved that ‘ Steady Eddie ‘ got time to shine in the spotlight.

sister act tour newcastle

Delores really doesn’t want to be at the Convent, and to be fair, the convent struggles with her arrival. Once the nuns warm to her, and she sees an opportunity to help the choir achieve greatness, we get some stand-out performances.

There’s a few returning favourites in this production including LIZZIE BEA as Sister Mary Robert and gives a mighty fine performance.

ISABEL CANNING  also shines as the shy, but angelic voiced Sister Mary Patrick.

The cast also includes – Ian Gareth-Jones, Julie Stark,   Phillip Arran, Lori Hayley Fox, Wendy-Lee Purdy, Bradley Judge, Damian Buhagiar, Callum Martin, Castell Parker, Esme Laudat, Amber Kennedy, Joseph Connor, Ceris Hine, Eloise Runnette, Sheri Lineham  and  Michael Ward .

The gangsters are another highlight of this outstanding production, although they had us trembling with laughter more than fear. They will have you laughing out loud at their disco-esque routines. Great show guys, you were all brilliant.

sister act tour newcastle

There is nothing not to like in this show, which probably accounts for the full house last night. The music is great, the sets outstanding and the love and friendship coming off the stage is something we all need right now. Oh yes, and those dancing nuns is another reason to get along and see it this week. As they sing so beautifully – ‘ It’s Good to be a Nun ‘.

People absolutely love the movie and hallelujah,  SISTER ACT: A DIVINE MUSICAL COMEDY  is equally fun and fabulous and will take you to  joyous heavenly heights . It’s very easy to get into the Sister Act habit and it’ll be a hard  habit  to break once you’ve seen it. We could definitely have another helping of this.

SISTER ACT  is at the Wales Millennium Centre through to Saturday 18th November. Performances are at 7:30pm with 2:30pm matinees on Wednesday and Saturday. Seats are still available starting at £18 but remember that last year the show was a pretty near sell out. To find out more, and get yours, go  HERE .

Just a little word of warning, it’s showing limited availability for some performances, which means you really do have to be quick to get yourself a seat.
