In perhaps one of the strangest pairings in recent memory, former Van Halen frontmen David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar will hit the road together on this summer’s co-headlining Song For Song, The Heavyweight Champs Of Rock’N’Roll tour. The 21-date run will kick off May 29 in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and last through a June 29 finale outside of Seattle. According to Hagar’s left its longtime home at Warner Bros. Records. In February, the group’s attorney, Alan Mintz , told Billboard the band was “weighing all the options and seeing what the future brings, [but] it’s still premature to say where the band will go.” He says the band will “seriously consider” major-label offers, but that such a move isn’t a given: “These are interesting times.” In other news, Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony recently noted on his official Web site the he and Hagar recorded a pair of songs with Journey guitarist Neal Schon and drummer Dean Castronovo . The project has been dubbed Planet Us and the songs the band recorded are titled “Vertigo” and “Peeping Through a Hole,” the latter of which Anthony described as “a high energy song that will almost leave you p***ed off by the time you’re done listening to it because it’s so intense.” Here are Sammy Hagar/David Lee Roth tour dates: May 29: Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio (Blossom Music Center) May 31: Clarkston, Mich. (DTE Energy Music Theatre) June 1: Tinley Park, Ill. (Tweeter Center) June 2: Noblesville, Ind. (Verizon Wireless Music Center) June 4: Cincinnati (Riverbend Music Center) June 6: Bonner Springs, Kan. (Sandstone Amphitheatre) June 7: Maryland Heights, Mo. (UMB Bank Pavilion) June 8: East Troy, Wis. (Alpine Valley) June 10: Peoria, Ill. (Peoria Civic Center) June 11: Columbus, Ohio (Polaris Amphitheatre) June 14: San Antonio, Texas (Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre) June 15: Dallas (Smirnoff Music Centre) June 16: Houston (C.W. Ex-Van Halen Singers Team Up For Sam & Dave Tour

sam and dave tour setlist

WEST HOLLYWOOD — It's not exactly what Van Halen fans had hoped for, but it's definitely intriguing. David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar, former singers for the group, will co-headline a national tour beginning May 29 near Cleveland.

And if Tuesday's (April 16) press conference to announce the outing is any indication, Diamond Dave and the Red Rocker are going to be the perfect pairing. Like a rock and roll comedy duo, the blond bastions of partying traded gags one-after-another at the Sky Bar, setting each other up and flashing face-wide grins at each punch line.

"Sammy and I are like fraternity brothers that have been through the same sh---y hazing," Roth said. "I think this tour is going to last a lot longer than Marilyn Manson and Courtney Love" (see [article id="1430056"]"Hole Walks Out On Tour, Manson Injury Postpones Several Dates"[/article]).

Roth and Hagar, the man who replaced him in Van Halen in 1985, certainly share a line or two on their résumés, but their joint tour is about more than that, Hagar said. "This is about making a statement."

"What we are about is a spirit, an attitude," added Roth, who was clad in black leather and surrounded by women in fluorescent yellow spandex cat suits. "It goes beyond the last band we were in. It's a state of mind and a point of view that Van Halen has misplaced — twice."

Hagar said he first approached Roth with the idea five years ago, but the boisterous singer shot it down.

"Yes, Sam, you did have the idea first, but the time was wrong," Roth said. "Now the time is right. It's completely unpredictable."

Tuesday marked only the second time the two, who have traded verbal jabs in the past, have spent any significant time together under one roof.

"I think that was before we met," Hagar said of their past animosity. Now that they're acquainted, will they perform together onstage? "We don't know each other well enough. I don't trust him," Hagar joked.

"Any rivalry that may have occurred is nothing that can't be cured with a little Cabo Wabo Tequila," Roth added, referring to Hagar's liquor brand.

Jokes aside, the singers said their friendly rivalry will push both of them to perform to the best of their abilities, hence the boxing reference in the tour's official slogan: "Song for song, the heavyweight champs of rock 'n' roll."

Roth and Hagar will each play 90-minute sets, alternating the headlining slot.

"We're going to flip a blonde in the next city and I'm going to call tails," Roth joked. "You have to think of it as two title fights with no under card. This is a co-headlining tour here. We'll flip a coin and the winner will headline opening night and then we'll flip-flop."

Both singers said they plan to include a heavy dose of Van Halen in their sets.

"I'm going to do almost exclusively the Van Halen catalog," Roth said. "It's about time that we show up and not just do renditions. I have a hot band that will serve it large."

"He's going to do some of the Van Halen songs I did," Hagar joked.

"Since Dave actually wrote those songs," Roth shot back.

"What you have is quintessential Americana, and you couldn't pick a more appropriate time for that," explained Roth, who described the vibe of the tour as a cross between Jimmy Buffett and Limp Bizkit. "Between the two of us there is probably something between 80 to 100 million albums sold. And whether you've owned it or not, you've heard Sammy or my voice blaring out of a pickup truck in front of you at the drive-thru at the local Burger King for how many summers?"

As for the chances of Eddie and Alex Van Halen joining either singer for a reunion, it doesn't appear likely. Although Hagar and Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony are working together on a side project and both Hagar and Roth said Anthony is welcome to perform with them, they did not sound interested in the Van Halen brothers.

"I'm not sure what the brothers think and I'm not sure I really care," Roth said.

When asked why Gary Cherone, the other former Van Halen singer, is not on the bill, Roth joked that the former Extreme frontman was busy doing "The Vagina Monologues."

The innovators: stax artist spotlights sam & dave.

Known as “Double Dynamite,” “The Sultans of Sweat,” and “The Dynamic Duo,” Sam & Dave have long been recognized as one of the greatest live acts of their time and one of the most successful soul duos ever. During the height of their two-decade-long career, Sam Moore (b. 1935) and Dave Prater (1937–1988) consistently delivered hit after hit on the R&B charts, while their crossover success was instrumental in introducing soul music to white audiences.

Both Sam (born in Miami, FL) and Dave (from Ocilla, GA) grew up singing in church and began their careers with gospel groups. The two singers crossed paths on the gospel circuit, performing together for the first time in 1961 at Miami’s King of Hearts club. Before long, Sam & Dave had developed a high-energy live act, perfected their harmonies, and scored their first record deal.

Their initial years together spawned a handful of singles and some regional airplay, but an introduction to Atlantic Records executive Jerry Wexler changed the course of their career. At the time, Atlantic was handling the distribution of Stax, and Wexler felt that the duo’s grittier, Southern sound would be a perfect fit for the burgeoning Memphis label.

There, Sam & Dave began working with one of the label’s newer songwriting duos, Isaac Hayes and David Porter, and recorded with Stax’s talented house band, Booker T. & The M.G.’s. It was a recipe for success. In 1966, the group scored their first Top Ten R&B single, “You Don’t Know Like I Know,” and kicked off an astonishing run of ten consecutive Top 20 hits on the chart.

Encouraged by Hayes and Porter to employ a call-and-response style (borrowed from their church days) the duo settled into their signature high-energy sound, as heard in their follow-up, “Hold On, I’m Comin’.” Released in March 1966, the fiery single spent 20 weeks on the R&B chart, eventually hitting the No.1 spot. It was also a Top 40 pop hit (peaking at No.21 on the Billboard Hot 100) and the title track of their debut LP, which was a No.1 R&B bestseller.

Sam & Dave continued to dominate the charts over the next year with “You Got Me Hummin’,” “Said I Wasn’t Gonna Tell Nobody,” and the soulful ballad, “When Something is Wrong with My Baby.” The tireless duo was playing hundreds of shows a year and had built an international fanbase, thanks to tours in Europe and the UK (their first Japanese tour followed in 1969). While Sam & Dave were at the pinnacle of their career, a song called “Soul Man” was about to secure their place in music history.

Written in the summer of 1967, the idea of “Soul Man” came to Hayes and Porter while watching coverage of Detroit’s 12 th Street Riot—one of the deadliest incidents of the Civil Rights Movement. Hayes recalled seeing how buildings that had been tagged with the word “soul” (marking Black-owned businesses) were left intact. “I thought about the night of the Passover in the Bible… And I realized the word soul keeps them from burning up their establishments,” Hayes told Robert Gordon in Respect Yourself: Stax Records and the Soul Explosion. In Rob Bowman’s Soulsville U.S.A.: The Story of Stax Records , Hayes added that the song is “a story about one’s struggle to rise above his present conditions. It’s almost…like boasting, ‘I’m a soul man.’ It’s a pride thing.”

With its funky guitar licks and joyful horns, the single (which opened the group’s third album Soul Men ) became an instantly recognizable anthem across the country. Released in September, the song flew to the top of the R&B chart and hit No.2 on the Billboard 100. Elsewhere, “Soul Man” landed at No.2 in Canada and No.24 in the UK.

Despite the fact that racial tensions were growing in cities and towns across the US, the popularity of the song made Rolling  Stone note, “When ‘Soul Man’ becomes a national number one record, it indicates that a much more earthy, low-down kind of soul is beginning to get to white America.”

“Soul Man” earned Sam & Dave a GRAMMY® Award in 1968. 51 years later, the Library of Congress added it to their National Recording Registry for its cultural significance. Over the decades since its release, the song has been covered by dozens of artists, including Paul Revere & the Raiders, Prince, and—perhaps most famously—The Blues Brothers (aka Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi).

In 1968, as Stax and Atlantic ended their partnership, the duo released their final single with the Memphis label and their final Top Ten hit (on both the R&B and pop charts), “I Thank You.” After a brief split in 1970, the reunited pair continued to be an in-demand live act, but they failed to find the same chart success as they had in the ’60s. The end of the decade offered them a career resurgence with Aykroyd and Belushi’s “Blues Brothers” sketches and subsequent film, but Sam & Dave officially parted ways in 1981.

Their legacy, however, has only grown. In addition to helping pave the way for Black artists to crossover into the pop market, the duo influenced a broad selection of artists, including Phil Collins, Tom Petty, Elvis Costello, Al Green, Billy Joel, and Bruce Springsteen. Among their many honors, Sam & Dave were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2019 GRAMMYs. Sadly, Dave Prater lost his life in a car accident in 1988. He was just 50. Sam Moore, who is now in his 80s, continues to enjoy an active career.

  • Sometimes songs come about in the strangest of ways. In the case of “Hold On, I’m Comin’,” Porter took a bathroom break while he and Hayes were in a writing session. When Hayes checked in on his collaborator, Porter’s response was “hold on, I’m comin’.” That was the creative spark they needed, and the song was completed within an hour. Coincidentally, the men’s restroom at Stax offered ideal acoustics for reverb and was used regularly during recordings for such purposes.
  • As one of the most in-demand live acts of the late ’60s, Sam & Dave averaged 280 days on tour during the height of their success, with regular TV appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Tonight Show, and The Mike Douglas Show. Among their higher-profile stops was a headlining slot at the 1969 Texas International Pop Festival (where they shared the bill with Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, and Sly and the Family Stone) and a performance at the 1968 tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. at Madison Square Garden. In December 1968, the duo made history as the first Black soul act to headline the Fillmore East in New York.

FAN REVIEWS

I went to the concert in Nashville expecting for Dave to steal the show.....how wrong I was! Sammy opened the show and put on one of the best concerts I have seen in 10 years. The band was tight, Sammy's voice was fantastic and the set list perfect! Sammy is a pure professional and works hard to see that his fans get their money's worth. Then there's Dave......... I was expecting a kick ass show but got a pathetic lounge parody act( was that really Dave on stage, I thought I was watching a SNL skit!)! What happened to Dave? His band was good but Dave himself sucked! His voice was bad,he looked old and he forgot lyrics (or he just couldn't hit the notes so he would quit singing).Dave didn't have the energy level that Sammy had and to tell you the truth...I don't think he really cared. Dave was there to pick up his $100,000 for that show and do as little as possible to earn it! Sammy kicked Dave's ass from open to close, end of story!! -Randy J.

----------------------------------------

David Lee Roth is a bitter, old man. I enjoyed Sammy's laid back attitude and constant appreciation for the fan support. Roth was scarily rude to the ladies and his masturbation re-enactment with a bottle of 'Jack' left the audience with an insight into his fried mind that will take some time to replace. I wish that he would accept what the years of tough living have done to him and tone it down a bit. He is still in great physical shape, but he seems to barely be holding it together. No way will the brothers pick him up for a reunion. That would be worse than their current disappearing act. It was as close as we'll probably ever come to the VH of old and it was definitely worth the price for both performances. Sammy's voice is stronger than ever. He put on a fashion show for the audience wearing every single thing thrown on stage. He even signed autographs while singing and had 40 fans on stage to boot. I miss those 5150 days! He was very complimentary of the Van Halen boys and said that although he wouldn't go back to them, he would love to play a few songs at Cabo... -jeff and kristen b.

Sammy was scheduled to be the closer, but he opened the Nashville show.  From the beginning I could sense a different feeling than the show I saw in Cincinnati two months earlier.  Sammy was really "on" tonight.  When he got into Runaround, 3 Lock Box and One Way to Rock, the sun was starting to set.  The rest of the set was great.  Michael Anthony brought the crowd to the next level.  It was great seeing him play some of the VH tunes.  Though the Nashville show was the 14th time I have seen Sammy live, it was by far the best.  He is a true performer and loves his fans.  Thanks for a great night Sammy.  As for Roth, what else can be said except that he is David Lee Roth.  No further explanations need.  Todd M.

OK, I just got back from Nashville to see the RED ROCKER. Unfortunatly I had to see a Vegas side show act along with Sammy. I now see why Sammy is not headlining, for pity on the fans! I left after the third song! Dave's band actually was really good, but was ruined by someone trying to do Van Halen via frank SINanatra. Dave in your day you were great, but please, GET OFF THE STAGE!!! But now, Sammy was f/n rocking! I have seen you in mempho with and without V.H., jonesboogie, samstown, and of course nashvilly. Now Sammy always rocks but there was something special to this show. Michael! It was great to hear you guys together again, you made the the hair on my arms stand up! Thanks to both of you and the waboritas. Just got one question, were was Michael when dave was onstage? Backstage doin waboritas, crackin jokes?           SAMMY, YOU JUST KEEP GETTING BETTER, KEEP ON RED ROCKING!!!                                           WABORTAVILLE, TENNESSEE!  -MICHAEL B.

I went to see Sam and Dave 8/3/02  Sammy kicked ass, I have seen him many times and he was as good as I'd ever seen him, VH or solo. (probably better)  I was just in awe of him!  Dave on the other hand, now dont get me wrong, I love all era's of VanHalen and they were my favorite band before Sammy ever joined, however the Sammy era is my favorite, but I loved the Dave stuff too! Dave's performance was the most pothetic display I've ever seen in my 31yrs of life, he looked like shit, sounded like shit, and  just seemed like some dumbass corny old man trying to relive his heyday.  We were so glad Sammy opened the show, we left half way through dave' show, I just could not take anymore, and I did not want a funky stigma put on old VH.  Sammy was everything I thought he would be, and sorry to say so was Dave.  Dave is now cubic zirconia, instead of diamond.  Jodyc5150

Of course I had to write it in RED.  When I heard that the Sam and Dave tour was on and coming to a town near me, I knew I would have to be there.  I 've been a "Red Head" for years and had been to a Sammy/Van Halen show in the past so I Kind of knew what I was in for, but God Bless ya Sammy,  I had forgotton just how good it was.  In the hot Tennessee dusk (Ambient temp 96 or so, heat index somewhere near 105) Sammy put the crowd of somewhere between 10-15000 on our feet and we never sat down.  I mean it, no-one sat down for the entire show.  Being a relative senior rocker (in my 40's) I have been to more than one or two concerts in my 25 or so concert going years, so I have seen the good and the bad, lord help em, but Sammy gets better with his years, just like his tequila. Sammy, Thank ya, thank ya, thank ya a thousand times for keeping the rock alive.  I think it was you that said, "There's Only 1 way to Rock".  Thanks for practicing what you preach. K. Alan P. Jackson, TN RKN-N-JXN

Sammy should have been the closing act!!!!  This is the third year in a row that I have seen him (STL 2000 & 2001, Nashville 2002) and I never tire of his showmanship or his setlist.  He is definitely worth the price of admission.  He received a far better response than his Van Halen predecessor at this venue!!!  Sammy had the place buzzing and wanting more.      DLR to put it bluntly sounded like a has-been, although he still remains in very good shape.  He acted as if he was on a model runway and not entertaining over ten thousand or so fans who showed up to see the original Van Halen vocalist.  He was definitely a buzz kill after Sammy's set.  Hopefully, DLR will never torment America with a tour of this kind again!!!  I always wanted to see DLR back with Van Halen; (because I loved Sammy solo stuff [being from St. Louis and all] and know he will succeed anywhere because he's got such a great personality) but, now I understand why Dave isn't and will never be again in that position.      Please bring the Cabo Wabo Cantina back to the land of Jack Daniels as soon as possible.  We'll be waiting with bells on!!! -Stephen H.

Nashville, TN Aug 3 Sammy kicked major ASS!!  and looked great doing it.  Everyone was pumped up and having a great time it was an awesome show.  The first half anyway.  NO ONE ROCKS LIKE THE RED ROCKER!!!!  Love ya Sammy!!! DLR would be better off to take the roll of nickels out of those tight pants and go to Vegas.(circus circus)  We left shortly after his ego trip and had to wait in line to get out of the parking area.  What a Waste.  kristin

I just witnessed one of the best concerts in my life Saturday night at the AmSouth Amphitheatre in Nashville, TN.  The only bad review I can give is that Sammy opened up and based on what I saw, most definetly should have been the closing act.  From the time Sammy hit the stage with Shaka Doobie to the ending encore of Dreams, the Red Rocker & the Waborita's never missed a note.  The crowd was on it's feet for the entire show singing along to every word.  When Michael Anthony joined the band for some VH songs, it was truly a magic moment. I have seen Sammy on many occasions and have never been disappointed, but this night was like no other.  The energy and chemistry Sammy has with the audience is unbelievable.  The show was filled with both Van Halen songs and vintage Hagar tunes.  It was almost unfair for Roth to have to come out and perform after Sammy's show, because their was no way to top it and everyone's energy was spent.  I will give Dave credit, he was better than I have seen him before as a solo act. His band did a great job also. He nailed a couple of songs like And the Cradle Will Rock & Unchained, but was not as sharp on many other tunes.  Where Sammy and the crowd were one, it seemed Roth tried way too hard to imitate Sammy and be intimate with the crowd.  In the end, Dave is Dave, and that's all I am going to say about that. The bottom line is that Sammy Hagar showed everyone Saturday night that there is only one way to rock and he's got the patent on it! Redrocker Rules again! Billy T Cornersville, TN

it's 11:43 and I'm home already, wanna know why? cause we left before Dave's set was over! It was like a bad 80's hair metal dream meets a cheesy Las vegas lounge act!! And to think i expected Dave to blow Sammy away! I liked when Dave walked to close to a amp and the feedback from the Mic nearly knocked him down, and that was the best part of his show!! Sammy on the other hand had a genuinly good time, the 20 or so audience members that were seated on stage with him were having the time of their lives too! He's such a goof ball, putting shirts on his head that fans throw at him, it was way cool...and to think i really never liked him too much...I'm going out tommorow to buy his solo stuff, and his VH stuff!  WAY TO GO SAMMY & CREW!! Ralph C. Nashville TN

Last night in Nashville, Sammy and the Waboritas opened the show. Both Sammy and his band sounded awesome! The song "Heavy Metal" kicks major ass live! I had seen Sammy eight times live prior to this show. His vocal performance last night was as good as any that I have heard. His voice was very POWERFUL! It was cool to see Michael Anthony joining Mona on bass and backing vocals. They both sounded great as well. Sammy and Victor both did some major jamming on guitar. Sammy is a master at creating an atmosphere that simply makes you feel good!  Then there was Dave. Dave came out in a glowing gold suit that was three sizes too small for him. Dave's BAND sounded really good. His guitarist played most of the old Van Halen stuff note for note. He had trouble with the intro to "Mean Street" but did a really nice job on the rest of the songs. After playing an Eruption-like solo, he was hit in the head by some object thrown by a guy in the audience. Dave stopped the show and had security throw the perpetrator out of the arena. As for Dave's vocals, all I can say is that he sucked royally. I have always been a fan of both eras of Van Halen music. It was difficult for me to believe that this was the same guy that actually sang on those early Van Halen records. He seemed to make no effort to stay in time with the band. His band was rocking but he was just walking around, usually fondling himself, mumbling the lyrics. I have read articles where Eddie Van Halen stated that he thought that Dave would have trouble pulling off the songs live. Eddie definitely had legitimate concerns. We could hear Dave singing Jump as we were walking to our car. It sounded like bad Karaoke. -Darrin

Just got back to Bowling Green from the Sam and Dave show.......what an evening. Sammy opened, and as usual captivated the crowd from the very beginning.  The Waboritas were in top form and from the opening Shaka Doobie to the final note of Dreams, the band was tight.  Sammy was his usual fun self and had the audience in the palm of his hand all night.  It was nice see Michael Anthony join Sammy again for some Van Halen numbers.  I saw this same show 2 months agao in Indianapolis, and Sammy and the gang just get better all the time.  I wish more performers could make pleasing their fans as important Sammy does!  Hats off to you Sammy!! David Lee came out to "headline" the show.  What a joke.  Dave's band was much improved over two months ago, so much so that they outshined him.  Dave does not the ability to interact with the fans and quite frankly didn't act like he cared how he sounded or presented himself.  We left after only 30 minutes of Dave and the aisles were full of people heading to their cars. I was hoping that this experience would be better than the last time and althought I think Dave tried, he just isn't championship material. The champ tonight......Hands down, Sammy Hagar, Knockout in the first round. Mike Bowling Green, Ky

100%GUARANTEE OF A GREAT TIME WHEN YOU SEE SAMMY... HE NEVER LETS YOU DOWN. THE WABORITAS ARE EXCELLENT AND FUN IS HAD BY ALL.. THE BAND HAS FUN, THE CROWD HAS FUN AND THEY CONTINUALLY FEED OFF OF ONE ANOTHER! YOU MUST SOMEHOW SOMEWAY GET DOWN NEAR THE STAGE! (IT IS NOT AS HARD AS YOU THINK) AND OF COURSE MICHAEL ANTHONY SHOWS UP AND KICKS IT EVEN MORE.  MONA IS AWESOME AND HAS A LOT OF CLASS TO LET MICHAEL STEP IN - AND SHE STILL ADDS SO MUCH TO THE SHOW..BOTH BASS, VOCAL AND HER FUN ATTITUDE!  MICHAEL AND HER COMBINING ON BACKGROUND VOCALS WAS INCREDIBLE. THE WHOLE BAND HAS A BLAST TOGETHER AND YOU CAN DEFINITELY FEEL IT!!  AND THAT IS WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT!!! . AND FOR SAMMY - HE ACTUALLY TOOK A FEW MOMENTS DURING HIS SHOW TO AUTOGRAPH SOME ALBUMS FOR SOME CLOSE UP FANS WHIILE HE WAS PERFORMING ON STAGE - IN BETWEEEN LYRICS MIND YOU - BUT HE ALWAYS MANAGED TO FINISH THE SIGNING FOR THE FAN AND ACKNOWLEDGED THEM - AND MOVED ON TO THE NEXT PART OF THE SONG. HE DID NOT SKIP A BEAT.  SAMMY IS THE CHAMP , IT AMAZES ME THAT IT WAS QUESTIONABLE BEFORE, BUT I ALWAYS ARGUED FOR HIM, THIS TIME THE ACTIONS AND MUSIC ARE DOING THE TALKING HEAD TO HEAD. AND I AM SURE EDWARD WILL FEEL THIS ALSO.- BUT HE KNOWS MORE THAN ALL OF US THE TRUTH...SAMMY -  HE IS TOTAL CLASS, TOTAL NON STOP FUN. SAMMY IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE A SHOWSTOPPER. BUT YET HE IS ALWAYS SMART ENOUGH TO SURROUND HIMSELF WITH GREAT  MUSICIANS. AND HE UNDERSTANDS THE BIG PICTURE, BECAUSE HE HAS BEEN THROUGH ALL OF THIS BEFORE. HE HAS BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR BELIEVE IT OR NOT 4 DECADES...(5 DECADES IF YOU COUNT THE 60'S AND I AM SURE SAMMY WILL) , AND WE WILL TRY TO GET HIM TO HIS  FIFTH DECADE OF MUSIC. ..2010.. THAT'S WHAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF !!!!I I (DOES ANYONE SMELL A VH REUNION SAMMY STYLE THIS DECADE - IT WILL HAPPEN!) I MUST ONE DAY GO TO SAN LUCAS AND EXPERIENCE THE SAMMY BIRTHDAY BASH ... SHORT TERM GOAL 2003.  PS. THE OTHER ACT ON THIS BILL IS NOT WORTH MENTIONING. STICK A FORK IN HIM PLEASE AND LET US ALL GET ON WITH OUR ROCKIN' LIVES . I HAVE SAID TOO MUCH ALREADY .  ............ -KENTUCKY DAVID

Let me just say this about the Nashville show, I've never been one to get all hot and heavy about the Sammy/DLR thing.  I've always leaned more toward Sammy because that was my Van Halen, but last night's show settled that debate.  Sammy kicked ass period.  It was like the difference between music that meant something to you and a Vegas lounge act.  I don't want to slam DLR, but he just sucked.  The crowd was going nuts during Sammy's set and by the middle of DLR's set....most folks were sitting down or leaving like we did.  I would actually travel to see Sammy's show ago and am thinking about making a pilgrimage to Cabo Wabo.  I love Jimmy Buffet and Sammy has developed himself in to a Buffet for people who like rock.  I totally dig it. Rob Jones P.S.  Sammy, please please please work it all out with Eddie and do at least one more album.  Damn I miss it!

Sammy Hagar Invites David Lee Roth to Tour: ‘Come on Motherf—er’

Sammy Hagar has extended an invitation to Alex Van Halen and David Lee Roth to join him on his 2024 tour.

The Red Rocker announced that he’ll hit the road next year and perform a set list focused on Van Halen material.

"It's time. Nobody else is gonna do it," Hagar declared to radio host Howard Stern . "If [original Van Halen singer] Dave [Lee Roth] goes out, he can't sing my stuff. [But] we can do a few of the early Van Halen songs. I have no problem with that; I did it when I was in Van Halen. This is really a celebration of all that, and we are the only ones who can do it."

Hagar will be backed by his band the Circle, featuring former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony . Guitar legend Joe Satriani , who joined forces with Hagar in Chickenfoot , will also be along for the trek. Hagar also explained that he’ll have an open invitation policy to other musicians, including Van Halen’s former members.

"We're gonna invite every musician in every town,” the singer insisted. “First of all, whenever you play, if there's a guitar player in town, no matter what city it is, they come out to see Joe, just like they used to for Eddie [Van Halen] . So if we've got other guitar players, we'll get them involved, other singers, get them involved. If Alex Van Halen wants to jump up, if David Lee Roth wants to come out and join us, come on, motherfucker. You are welcome. This is about Van Halen."

Don't Expect Either Musician to Accept Hagar's Offer

Despite Hagar’s enthusiasm, the likelihood of Roth or Alex Van Halen joining him onstage seems extremely remote. Previously, all of the parties were involved in conversations surrounding the Kitchen Sink tour, which would have seen every past and present Van Halen member taking part in an extended trek. Those plans fell apart when Eddie's health began to rapidly deteriorate.

Following the guitar great’s death  in 2020, there were reportedly several efforts to organize a tribute concert . However, nothing materialized amid reports of disputes among the former bandmates.

“For them not to have done something for Eddie Van Halen, the greatest guitar player in the world, on the planet. Greatest rock musician, I’m telling ya. It’s ugly,” Hagar bemoaned in a recent interview , prior to the announcement of his tour.

“I don't know, maybe it's just '80s bands,” Wolfgang Van Halen , Eddie’s son, commented in a separate interview  discussing Van Halen’s tumultuous nature. “There's something about '80s bands where it was the cool thing to be dicks. But some things just don't work out and it seems like [a tribute concert] is one of them.”

Sammy Hagar tour: Van Halen songs on playlist for Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani, Jason Bonham

sam and dave tour setlist

Sammy Hagar plans to revitalize some Van Halen vibes on his upcoming summer tour.

For The Best of All Worlds Tour, Hagar and his bandmates in The Circle – bassist Michael Anthony, a founding member of Van Halen, and drummer Jason Bonham – will be joined by guitarist virtuoso Joe Satriani , who has recorded and performed with Hagar and Anthony in the band Chickenfoot.

The itinerary kicks off on July 13 in West Palm Beach, Florida, and the tour hits a total of 28 cities, concluding August 31 in St. Louis, Missouri. Loverboy will serve as the opening act.

Pre-sales begin on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 10 a.m., with general on-sale starting Friday, Nov. 17 at 10 a.m. local. For more information go to RedRocker.com .

Hagar, 76, joined Van Halen as vocalist in 1985 after David Lee Roth left. Hagar also left the band in 1996, but returned for a 2004 tour. Recently, Hagar says he and Anthony decided to perform songs from their days playing in Van Halen at Hagar's annual Birthday Bash last month in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

"We pulled out a couple of them and it was an instant lovefest with the fans from our first riffs," Hagar said in a statement with the tour announcement. "The music we created is going to outlive us all. They deserve to be heard so it's time we go out and serve the fans that music, while we still can."

The four albums of the "Van Hagar" era of the band – 5150 (1986), OU812 (1988), For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (1991), and Balance (1995) – were recently re-released in newly remastered editions.

“It’s crazy to think that it’ll be 20 years since Mikey and I played these songs with Van Halen on the 04’ Best of Both Worlds Tour,” said Hagar. “With Joe on board, we can take a deeper dive into those years. We’re going to touch on some hits from my entire career but seeing fans old and new really embrace the new collection set off something in Mikey and I."

Joining the band on keyboards and backing vocals is Australian musician Rai Thistlethwayte.
