Road To Hana

Hana offers some of the most beautiful and spiritual sites. Leave some room for the unimaginable as we explore waterfalls, cliffs, tidepools and other local marvels on this full-day tour.

About Epic Maui Hikes

We connect people to themselves, and to the island. We take them on adventures that inspire, motivate, and invigorate them, including cliff jumping and showering in waterfalls. We photograph every part of their journey with us and give them memories that will last a lifetime.

See What Makes our Maui Hikes so Epic

I participated in the Epic Waterfall Adventure and it was a wonderful experience. I was with my family of all ages and we had the best guide to show us all of the beautiful things this island offers. I would recommend Mike Blue to everyone who wants to get the best knowledge and experience of the waterfalls. He took lots of pictures and videos of us the entire time and he gave us a few extra treats to snack on the way. We ate apples of trees and saw many places. 10/10 experience with Mike and he has lived here most of his life so he new all the private waterfalls. Thank you so much!

Sean was our guide and we loved him. Conversation was easy, we felt well informed and safe, and the scenery was beautiful. We were able to explore way more than we ever would have tried if we were solo (crossing streams, climbing into waterfalls, rope/cliff jumping, eating flowers), and Sean took some great pics/video on his go-pro and gave us the memory card at the end of the hike. This hike was not strenuous in any way, just a little technical, and definitely muddy, which was all part of the fun. Be prepared to get wet!

Epic Maui Hikes was the absolute best experience I had on Maui! It was exactly the kind of adventure I was looking for! Our guide was full of aloha spirit and took us to places that were breathtaking. He was knowledgeable of the island, took as many pictures of us as we wanted, and fulfilled everything that we wanted to see. I couldn’t of asked for a better time on island. HANDS DOWN, unbelievable!

Bryce was an amazing tour guide. We enjoyed the almost mile hike to the waterfall. I would say it is in the moderate category. The walking sticks Bryce provided made the trip that much better. The stunning views of the waterfall were top notch. Best part - the cliff jumping and rope swing! Highly recommend this adventure. It will not disappoint!

Amazing hike into the bamboo forest and waterfalls! Lauren was our guide and went the extra mile to ensure we had the best experience. She picked us up from the cruise port and gave us a ton of info on Hawaiian culture and wildlife while we drove to our destination. Along our tour we saw lots of bamboo while we hiked to beautiful waterfalls. We were able to play in the water and jump off rock cliffs, all while our guide took awesome GoPro footage the entire time. The terrain was muddy and slick in spots, so bring some good hiking/water shoes! After our tour was over, Lauren took us to an awesome beach where we saw sea turtles both in the water and sunbathing on the sand. Highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for high adventure!

Caitlin was a wonderful guide! We had such a good time! The bamboo forest was a tough hike, but it was well worth it for the photogenic views! Just remember to bring shoes that you do not care for - the trail can become very muddy, especially when it rains, and you need to cross rivers sometimes - it is easier to just go through the water. Overall, a fun and exhilarating hike!

At first I was skeptical, Lauren put all my fears to rest. My sons ( college students) and I had a blast. Get ready to get muddy. I have a handicap, I get dizzy sometimes and I don't have strength in my arms) Lauren was so patient and very helpful. Her knowledge and love for the island shows. Mohala

15 Best Maui Waterfalls To Visit (+ Map, Hikes & Tours)

Waterfalls of Maui !

I consider no vacation to Hawaii complete without a visit to one of its many stunning waterfalls, and Kauai and Maui are probably the two main islands with thousands to choose from!

Most of the best waterfalls in Maui are easily accessible, either viewable directly from the road or along relatively easy hikes, unlike Kauai, where most of the island is undeveloped, and we needed to take a helicopter ride to see the best waterfalls.

Not only that, many of the best Maui waterfalls are stops on the road to Hana , a must-drive 64-mile stretch of road on every visitor’s itinerary.

Best Maui Waterfalls

If you have time to see only one waterfall in Maui , let that be the impressive Waimoku Falls , where you can get quite close to the 400-foot waterfall.

Waimoku Falls, one of the best Maui waterfalls, in the Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park in Maui

Actually I’m lying, to get to Waimoku Falls on the Pipiwai Trail you have to pass the 180-foot Makahiku Falls , that you can see from an overlook, in the distance.

So you get to see two stunning Maui waterfalls , and enjoy an unbelievable rainforest hike on the Pipiwai Trail!

If you don’t have time for waterfall hikes on Maui , your best options are the Wailua Falls or the Upper Waikani Falls , both of which can be viewed from the road or your car.

Wailua Falls, one of the best Maui waterfalls that can viewed from the comfort of your car on the road to Hana

If you are ok with smaller, easy Maui waterfall hikes (about 1 mile round trip), the Makahiku Falls , the Ohe’o Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools) and the Twin Falls are good options, with great natural beauty along the hikes.

If you have smaller kids and wanting Maui waterfalls you can swim in , your best option is the Pua’a Ka’a Falls – smaller, multiple waterfalls with natural swimming pools at their base, in a state wayside park with facilities.

Our kids had a ball splashing around at the base of Pua’a Ka’a Falls!

1. Waimoku Falls

Waimoku Falls , the final destination of the Pipiwai Trail , is one of the best Maui waterfalls, a must see waterfall on any visit to Maui island!

Waimoku Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls on Maui, in the Haleakala National Park, Maui

Though at the end of the road to Hana, we listed this first to make sure you allow enough time! Not only do you get to see a gorgeous waterfall, you also get to enjoy one of the best waterfall hikes on Maui , if not THE best Maui waterfall hike !

Hiking the Pipiwai Trail, we barely noticed the time – there is so much to keep you absorbed: lush rainforest jungle, picturesque bridges over multiple streams, smaller, but enchanting, waterfalls along the way, and an epic banyan tree reminiscent of the Lahaina banyan tree.

Though we’ve visited Waimoku Falls on every trip to Maui, we see something new along the way each time! Last time we spotted a Chinese hwamei , one of the pretty Hawaiian forest birds introduced into Hawaii, and frequently sighted along the trail.

Chinese Hwamei, an introduced Hawaiian bird species, that frequents the Pipiwai Trail, one of the best Maui waterfall hikes

We trained our kids to spot some easily identifiable Hawaiian plants , and they were able to find native towering koa trees, forming part of the rainforest canopy, and hala trees, with their characteristic tufted aerial roots.

Haven’t seen a bamboo forest ? You are in for a treat towards the end of the trail: a dense bamboo forest! Looking at these thin stalked trees soaring to the skies, can you even believe bamboo is a kind of grass?

Towering dense bamboo forest along the Pipiwai Trail to Waimoku Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls of Maui in Haleakala National Park

We could hear the thunder from the waterfall echoing through the bamboo forest as we approached the majestic 400-foot Waimoku Falls.

Waimoku in Hawaiian stands for “ water that breaks in two ,” a common occurrence after rains.

Last time we visited, it was just after torrential rains, and we were treated to an unforgettable spectacle of numerous waterfalls forming an epic weeping wall over ancient lava!

Because of the danger from falling rocks, Waimoku Falls is not one of the swimming waterfalls in Maui , and there are signs warning against going to the base pool.

Stunning Waimoku Falls, one of the best Maui waterfalls, at the end of the Pipiwai Trail

The Pipiwai Trail and Waimoku Falls are part of the Haleakala National Park, you can refer to our detailed guides on visiting Haleakala National Park and hiking the Pipiwai Trail to plan your trip.

The Pipiwai Trail, along with the Sliding Sands Trail through the surreal, Mars-like, Haleakala crater basin in the Summit District of the Haleakala National Park, are the two most popular hikes on Maui !

2. Makahiku Falls

About .5 miles into the Pipiwai Trail, you will reach an overlook at the top of a small hill, a perfect vantage point for an awe-inspiring spectacle of the 180-foot Falls of Makahiku , in the distance!

At its most majestic after rains, Makahiku Falls is quintessential Hawaii, a stunning waterfall surrounded by lush greenery, and rainforest jungle covering almost every foot of the cliff and valleys, a perfect photo for our kids’ Instagram!

Makahiku Falls, one of best waterfalls in Maui for Instagram photos

Makahiku means “ cathedral-like cliffs ” in Hawaiian, referring to the upward views of the waterfall cliffs from the bottom.

Looking down below, we could only wonder in awe at the valleys sculpted by the falling waters into the Ohe’o Gulch, again covered with dense rainforest foliage.

At a relatively short, 1-mile roundtrip distance, we felt Makahiku Falls is one of the more accessible Maui waterfalls , while offering a quick taste of rainforest waterfall hikes on Maui.

3. Honokohau Falls

The lush islands of Hawaii were the setting for many a scene in the famous Jurassic Park movie series, and no other landscape more readily reflects the primordial forests than that of the stunning Honokohau Falls , one of the best waterfalls of Maui , set in the West Maui mountains.

Honokohau Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls on Maui, featured in Jurassic Park

At a towering 1,100 feet, the Honokohau Falls is likely Maui’s tallest waterfall, and is one of the few waterfalls on Maui that is not on the Hana highway!

In fact, it is not on any road or trail, and is located in the middle of a deep, impenetrable valley in the West Maui Forest Reserve.

The only way to see the magnificent Honokohau Falls is via a helicopter tour. We took this Molokai and Maui Helicopter Tour , a roughly one-hour tour over the two beautiful islands!

Aerial view of Honokohau Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls on Maui

Words cannot describe the epic views from the helicopter, and we got an amazing aerial perspective of the towering coastal cliffs, the emerald-green valleys and the lush rainforests! We even saw whales and spinner dolphins breaching the ocean surface.

4. Twin Falls

Driving clockwise on the road to Hana from Kahului, you’ll arrive at Twin Falls just a few miles past the town of Paia (mile marker 2).

Twin Falls, one of the best Maui waterfalls on the road to Hana

The waterfalls (Lower and Upper Twin Falls) and the Twin Falls Trail are on private property (Wailele Farm), and the owners have graciously let visitors hike the trail to the waterfalls.

You can buy some of their delicious banana bread or coconut milk ice cream from their farm stand, or make a donation to support them!

The first waterfall, the Lower Twin Falls is quite close to the parking lot, while the second one, the Upper Twin Falls is a relatively short, 1-mile roundtrip hike.

Upper Falls is also called Caveman Falls, reflecting the large, natural cave-like space under the falls.

The hike to the Upper Falls is a pleasant rainforest hike, and we spotted banyan trees , bamboo , hibiscus plants and flowers , and native plants like ti , with its pretty purplish leaves, originally brought by the ancient Polynesians to the Hawaiian islands in their seafaring canoes.

Refer to our guide on Hawaiian plants, trees and flowers to identify these on the trail.

Banyan trees on the rainforest jungle trail to Twin Falls, one of the best Maui waterfall hikes

Be aware you are in an area prone to flash flooding, and the trail to the Upper Falls may be closed. We had to navigate stream crossings on the short hike, and you can expect to end up with wet shoes or feet!

Lower Twin Falls after a tropical rainstorm, with the path to Upper Twin Falls closed | Waterfalls of Maui

We took a refreshing dip in the inviting waters of the base pools of either falls, and typically you’ll see some locals cliff jumping into the pools. Obviously, this is quite dangerous with rocks in the water, sometimes hidden below the surface.

The Twin Falls is a popular stop on the road to Hana, and I strongly recommend you reach there early in the morning (opens at 7 am) to avoid the crowds and find parking.

5. Upper Waikani Falls

Also on the road to Hana just past mile marker 19, and visible from the road, is the 70-foot Upper Waikani Falls , one of the better waterfalls on the road, and definitely worth stopping if you can find parking.

Usually with three distinct cascades (hence the nickname, Three Bears Falls), Waikani Falls is one of the few accessible waterfalls on Maui that we could enjoy without hiking.

Upper Waikani Falls, one of the many waterfalls of Maui on the road to Hana

Due to its easy accessibility on this heavily trafficked road, the Upper Waikani Falls is one of the most photographed waterfalls on Maui!

We scrambled down a slippery trail to the base pool to take a dip in the water, but be cautious, especially if the flow is high!

The foliage surrounding Waikani Falls is stunning, with dense green vegetation consisting of ferns, grass and rainforest trees.

Three Bears Falls or Upper Waikani Falls, one of the few Maui waterfalls that doesn't need hiking

6. Hanawi Falls

Yet another waterfall on the road to Hana (mile marker 24), Hanawi Falls is one of the few Maui waterfalls that flow through the year, though the water flow can vary dramatically.

We visited when the water flow was good, and there were 2-3 separate cascades as shown in the picture, with an overall fall of about 200 feet. Very pretty!

Hanawi Falls, one of the few year-round Maui waterfalls

We saw some of the more adventurous souls head down for a dip in the plunge pool below the falls on the right side, but there is no easy trail down.

When we went, there was a rope to help you get down to the base pool, and climb back. The upside – very few other people in the pool, and the water here is usually crystal clear!

If you are crunched for time, Hanawi Falls is one of the few waterfalls on Maui that can be safely admired from your car, and the best spot is the historic road bridge over the exiting water stream.

7. Wailua Falls

Not to be confused with the one on Kauai, Wailua Falls is one of the most photographed Maui waterfalls, easily accessible for viewing from the road, without any hiking!

Wailua Falls is one of my favorite stops on the road to Hana, just past the mile marker #45, and I highly recommend you stop here, one of the few stops on the road with a lot of parking!

Best observed after rains or in the wet winter season when the flow is at its highest, Wailua Falls plunges down a rocky cliff surrounded by lush rainforest vegetation.

The 80-foot Wailua Falls is one of the taller waterfalls on the road to Hana.

Wailua Falls, one of the must-stop-for Maui waterfalls on the road to Hana

There is a narrow pathway down to the pool at the base of Wailua Falls, and we saw some selfie-seeking junkies standing in the water taking photos.

The dip in the crystal clear waters was quite refreshing!

We were so hungry after the swim, the nearby vendor stands and food trucks were a boon! Some of the local fruits were fresh and delicious.

8. Ohe’o Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools)

Part of the Haleakala National Park, the Ohe’o Gulch , sometimes called the Seven Sacred Pools or the Pools of Oheo (or just the Seven Waterfalls Maui ), is a series of pretty, terraced cascades tumbling through the gulch, forming the intermediate, sacred pools.

Ohe'o Gulch or Seven Sacred Pools, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Maui

The Oheo Gulch is one of the last stops on the road to Hana, near mile marker #42, and one of the most scenic waterfalls in Maui , against a picturesque Pacific Ocean setting, into which the gulch empties itself.

Take the short Kuloa Point Trail from the Kipahulu Visitor Center, one of the best easy Haleakala hikes . I recommend taking this loop trail counterclockwise, so that you face the beautiful falls while walking along the lookout trail.

While the Seven Sacred Pools are among the Maui waterfalls you can swim in, due to the risk from flash floods, the pools may be closed to swimming .

Flash floods at the Seven Sacred Pools, one of the most scenic Maui waterfalls

We felt the Ohe’o Gulch with its multiple cascades was one of the prettier waterfalls of Maui!

9. Pua’a Ka’a Falls

Located in the Pua’a Ka’a Wayside State Park , also on the road to Hana, just half a mile past mile marker #22, are the pretty Pua’a Ka’a Falls .

Pua’a Ka’a Falls is one of the many Maui waterfalls you can swim in!

Lower Pua'a Ka'a Falls, one of the prettier Maui waterfalls in the Pua'a Ka'a Wayside State Park

These are multiple, smaller waterfalls (about 15-20 feet high) along the trail off the road, with excellent base pools for swimming or splashing around. The water was crystal clear when we went in, coming from a mountain spring, but colddddd.

Family with small kids wanting to partake in a Hawaiian waterfall experience and swim in a natural pool? Pua’a Ka’a Falls is your best option!

Pua'a Ka'a Falls, one of the best Maui waterfalls on the road to Hana for families with kids to swim in

Apart from a handy pit stop (restrooms available) halfway to the Haleakala National Park, the scenery here is also very beautiful and lush, and well worth a stroll along the trail to the second falls, to stretch your legs.

10. Punalau Falls

Tired of the crowds on the road to Hana? Though the road has some of the best Maui waterfalls, getting to spend some quiet time with nature or enjoying a relaxing swim in the natural pools at the base are almost impossible.

Enter Punalau Falls , on the road to Hana (mile marker #13), but off the beaten track for most tourists due to a clambering, rock-hopping, half-a-mile roundtrip hike up to the falls.

Since Punalau Falls is not visible from the road, and poorly marked signs indicating the trailhead, the trail and Punalau Falls were deserted when we went!

At an impressive 100-foot waterfall, Punalau Falls is just what the doctor ordered for your vacation: some peace and quiet with beautiful nature! Best of all, most likely, you’ll have the base pool to yourself for a lengthy, refreshing dip.

Punalau Falls is one of the best Maui swimming waterfalls!

Punalau Falls, one of the least crowded Maui waterfalls

Be warned though, the bulk of the trail is along a stream, which gets hard to navigate after rains, with a tendency for flash floods. I would avoid this trail if you see clouds upstream, even if it is not raining where you are.

The rocks and boulders along the stream and at the falls are slippery, so watch your footing. We fell a couple of times, but luckily no injuries!

I would strong recommend hiking poles and non-slip water shoes for this hike.

11. Makapipi Falls

Yet another beautiful Maui waterfall on the road to Hana, and one of our favorite ones!

Makapipi Falls , just beyond the mile marker 25, one of the few Maui waterfalls you can stand over! The waterfall is under a road bridge, giving you a unique perspective of watching the water tumble down lava rocks into a base pool.

Makapipi Falls, one of the few Maui waterfalls you can photograph from above the falls

While getting this unusual photo for your Instagram is desirable, please don’t stop on the bridge – there is a pull out just beyond, and you can walk back. Be cautious, and don’t lean over too far!

As with many of the other waterfalls of Maui, Makapipi Falls is stunning to see after rains, with the flow is thundering down under us!

12. Alelele Falls

Like the Punalau Falls, Alelele Falls is also one of the lesser-known waterfalls on Maui that, though on the road to Hana, is usually deserted, because it is not visible from the road and most people have waterfall-exhaustion by the time they reach Alelele Falls.

All the better for you, this pretty 80-foot fall waterfall with an inviting pool at the bottom, is a hidden gem, away from the crowds on the road to Hana.

Take a peek at the Alelele stream under the bridge: no water or little water usually means the waterfall is likely to be underwhelming.

Bridge over Alelele Stream on the road to Hana, Maui | Waterfalls of Maui

We decided against the hike since the flow under the bridge was minimal.

To get to the waterfall, you have to hike a 10-minute trail that starts next to the bridge over Alelele stream.

Though Alelele Falls is impressive when the waterflow is high after rains, you need to be careful with the stream crossing, especially since there is always danger of flash floods.

13. Makamaka’ole Falls

Want to combine a nature hike with viewing a waterfall? You’re in luck!

Waihe’e Ridge Trail , on the lush windward side of Maui, is a beautiful hike through a lush tropical rainforest, and along the way you can see Makamaka’ole Falls , one of the best Maui waterfalls not on the road to Hana.

Hiking the Waihee Ridge Trail is among the best hiking in Maui waterfalls !

Scenic Makamakaole Falls vista from the Waihee Ridge Trail, Maui, Hawaii, one of the best Maui waterfall hikes

Though one of Maui’s most popular hikes , the Waihee Ridge Trail is more for the experienced hiker, about 4-miles round trip, with an elevation gain of 1,500 feet, taking roughly 3 hours overall.

Great payoff though! Stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, the coastline, rainforest mountains and valleys, and the beautiful Makamaka’ole Falls, one of the prettiest waterfalls on Maui.

Stunning landscape view seen from Waihee Ridge Trail | Waterfalls of Maui

Makamaka’ole Falls is a two-tiered, 270 foot tall waterfall set against a lush, green rainforest mountain landscape. It is one of two West Maui waterfalls on this list, the other being Honokohau Falls.

If you are a waterfall chaser hiking to just see the falls, you are in luck – Makamaka’ole Falls can be viewed roughly 0.8 miles into the hike.

14. Kopiliula Falls (Kopihula Falls)

Kopiliula Falls , sometimes called Kopihula Falls , is on the road to Hana, but with a trek of about 4 miles roundtrip, and of moderate difficulty due to some clambering, rope-assisted climbs and stream crossings.

Again, because you can’t see the falls from the road, Kopiliula Falls is usually deserted.

For adventurous hikers seeking a quiet waterfall and a relaxing dip, Kopihula Falls is an excellent choice.

Kopihula Falls is one of the better swimming waterfalls of Maui!

15. Puohokamoa Falls

One of the smaller falls on the road to Hana, just past mile marker 11 and visible from the Garden of Eden, Puohokamoa Falls is easily enjoyed as a drive-by waterfall from the road or bridge.

Puohokamoa Falls, one of the more secluded waterfalls in Maui, Hawaii

Getting down to the waterfall is much harder, but those who venture down will likely have the natural pool at the base of the waterfall to themselves, and enjoy a quiet, relaxing dip in the crystal clear waters.

Best Maui Waterfall Tours

Want to enjoy Maui waterfalls but looking for a structured experience? A guided Maui waterfall tour might be what you need, and we have a few that you’ll love.

Maui Waterfalls, Rainforest Hike & Optional Cliff Jumping

We took this highly popular, 5-star rated, Small Group Waterfall and Rainforest Hiking Adventure on Maui .

We hiked through dense, rainforest jungle to multiple waterfalls. Our guide was a wealth of information about local Hawaiian culture, and native plants and flowers .

She pointed out two amazing Hawaiian birds , honey creepers, ‘apapane and i’iwi , that are found only in the islands of Hawaii, and nowhere else in the world!

Apapane feeding on Ohi'a Lehua flower nectar

We had a teenage kid itching to try cliff jumping, and which we had refused so far. But under the guidance of the local guide, we did let him jump, supervised, into the pool at base of one of the waterfalls.

Quite risky, so use your discretion.

Hiking Gear Checklist

Many of Hawaii’s hikes are demanding, make sure you are well equipped and well prepared. Here’s what we typically take with us:

  • Water Bottle : I hate plastic bottles, and with opaque bladders you can’t see if it is moldy inside. We use this Hydro Flask water bottle – light, stainless steel, wide mouth (you can add ice), with double-wall vacuum insulation (greatly refreshing for hikes in summer). You can also get it with a Flex Straw Lid !
  • Hiking Shoes : My preferred hiking shoes are the medium range Merrell Moab 3 Waterproof Hiking Shoe ( men’s , women’s , men’s mid ), great for Hawaii’s trails through mud and streams. My wife loves her high-end Salomon X Ultra 4 GTX Hiking shoes ( men’s , women’s ), also waterproof.
  • Sunscreen : Hawaii’s sun can be harsh. Avoid sunburn with sunscreen compliant with Hawaii’s 104 Reef Act. The Sun Bum Original SPF 50 Sunscreen Spray , moisturizing with Vitamin E, is our go-to when we travel to Hawaii. Apply liberally and regularly!
  • Trekking Poles : Great for hikes that involve climbing, both going uphill and downhill, and on trails that are wet, muddy and slippery! Improve your footing with this collapsible, high-end Black Diamond Trail Cork Trekking Poles , available for men and women .
  • Headlamp : Planning a sunrise or sunset hike? Hiking in the dark is no fun, especially on many of Hawaii’s rainforest or ridge hikes. We love these two headlamps: the budget Black Diamond Spot 400 Headlamp and the premium Petzl Actik Core Headlamp , with many features.

Frequently Asked Questions about Waterfalls in Maui

Are there any waterfalls on maui not on the road to hana.

While many of Maui’s waterfalls are found along the Road to Hana, you can also find stunning waterfalls in the West Maui mountains.

Hike the Wai’hee Ridge Trail to view the stunning Makamaka’ole Falls.

The Honokohau Falls, Maui’s tallest waterfall, is also located in the West Maui mountains, but cannot be accessed via land. Take a helicopter tour to view this amazing waterfall not on the Road to Hana.

What is the most famous waterfall in Maui?

Honokohau Falls, in the West Maui mountains, is undoubtedly one of Maui’s most impressive waterfalls, cascading 1,100 feet to the bottom. You can only view this waterfall from the air, on a helicopter tour.

Of the waterfalls accessible via land, Waimoku Falls is a majestic 400-foot waterfall. And the hike to get to it, the Pipiwai Trail, is one of Maui’s must-do hikes!

What is the easiest waterfall hike on Maui?

The hike to Twin Falls is easy and doable for most visitors to the island. Stream crossings are involved, though, so wear appropriate shoes and watch for flash floods. Twin Falls is a popular hike, so arrive early to get parking.

The Koloa Trail, which offers views of the waterfalls at O’heo Gulch, is another easy Maui waterfall hike.

Do you need reservations for Twin Falls in Maui?

No, reservations are currently not required for Twin Falls. You have to pay for parking, though, and parking is limited, so arrive early!

Waterfall Safety Tips

Waterfalls can be exciting, but safety is paramount. Always carefully assess conditions on the day of your visit. Here are some tips that may help:

  • Heed all warning signs.
  • Remember that flash flooding can occur with very little or no warning, even if it isn’t raining or stormy where you are.
  • Waterfalls, streams, and other water bodies may not be safe for swimming. The water may not be safe to drink.
  • Rocks, logs, and other debris may tumble over waterfalls into plunge pools or streams below.
  • Always stay on designated trails. Expect muddy and slippery conditions.

Planning to visit the best Maui waterfalls this year? You’re in the right place!

Maui is a gorgeous tropical island in the Hawaiian archipelago. Crystal-clear waters, soft white beaches, and lush jungle adventures all await! While there, you must check out at least a few awe-inspiring Maui waterfalls that mark the rugged mountains.

Whether you’re interested in an intense hike through a bamboo forest, a quick stroll in a jungle, or want to see something off the beaten path, there’s a waterfall on this list for you!

Read on to hear about the 18 must-visit waterfalls in Maui, Hawaii.

Twin Falls in Maui, Hawaii with a small rainbow and surrounded by trees.

Table of Contents

18 Must-Visit Waterfalls in Maui, Hawaii

Whether you’re looking through this list for the top choice or considering visiting them all, this list is a great place to start planning your next Maui adventure!

Most (but not all!) of the waterfalls on this list are on the Road to Hana, a full-day excursion you should definitely prioritize.

1. Twin Falls

Some of the most family-friendly waterfalls (yes, plural!) on this list are at Twin Falls. The lower falls are easily accessible, with a wide, well-manicured path taking you to each of them.

The upper falls are arguably more impressive but require a trek through riverbeds and muddy trails. Not only are the waterfalls a reward, but you can also jump into the swimming pools and dip in the refreshingly cool river water.

You don’t need a guide here, but if you haven’t done much hiking, getting a guide is recommended to visit the Upper Falls.

If you go on your own, it’s $10 for a parking spot. Get there early! It fills up fast.

2. Waimoku Falls

Waimoku Falls is the destination at the end of the Pipiwai Trail on the Road to Hana. Enter a beautiful bamboo forest, cross swinging bridges, and even see the 185-foot Makahiku Falls en route.

A 4-mile round trip, this hike will take about 2.5 – 5 hours, depending on your skill level. Most of the hike is an elevated boardwalk, but you’ll want to wear sturdy shoes. Parts of the trail can get muddy, and you’ll be scaling rocks.

I did this hike for the first time a few years ago and was blown away! The bamboo forest is magical, and the waterfall at the end is awe-inspiring.

You need a Haleakala National Park Pass to complete this trail, but it’s worth the extra cost!

3. Pua’a Ka’a Falls

Pua’a Ka’a Falls is part of a Maui State Park along the beautiful road to Hana. Several small scenic waterfalls and swimming pools are scattered across the park. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to get out and use the restrooms!

One set of falls is right by the road, and the others are just a short walk away, making these waterfalls easy and convenient to see. You can dip in the pool, swim behind the waterfalls or enjoy a picnic lunch!

This is one of the few stops on the road to Hana that is handicap accessible, making it a great place to spend some time if you or someone in your party has mobility issues.

Pro Tip: Bring bug spray! The mosquitoes can be brutal .

4. Seven Sacred Pools of Oheo

Located along the Oheo Gulch, the Seven Sacred Pools are misleading. With over 20 swimmable pools, two hikes, and a camping spot, Seven Sacred Pools is a must-do for any adventurous traveler.

This is definitely one of the best hikes in Maui with waterfalls!

These pools are part of the Haleakala National Park, meaning you’ll need a national park pass. The $30 entrance fee will also grant you access to the summit if you go within the next 3 days.

The trail to the pools starts at the Kipahulu Visitors Center Parking lot (where the Pipiwai trailhead is also!). A quick half-mile walk will take you to the pools where you can swim, cliff jump, or enjoy the lush jungle foliage.

5. Punalau Falls

Punalau Falls is a gorgeous 100-foot waterfall often overlooked on the Road to Hana. The trailhead is unsigned and sits adjacent to a single parking spot.

It’s approximately a quarter mile east of mile marker 13. You’ll head into the jungle to a stream bed, where you’ll then walk upstream. These falls are difficult to reach, with no actual trail to follow.

However, getting up to the waterfall should only take about 20 minutes. If you’re lucky, you’ll have it all to yourself!

Important Note: Don’t do this hike if it is raining, has rained recently, or is raining up the mountain. Flash flooding has happened, and the narrow gorge makes escaping unscathed unlikely.

Amazing Honokohau Falls from a distance surrounded by mountains.

6. Honokohau Falls

Purportedly the tallest waterfall on Maui, Honokohau Falls plunges for an impressive total of 1,100 feet!

Located in an inaccessible valley on the West side of Maui, you cannot hike to see it. Instead, you’ll need to book a helicopter tour!

These falls were featured in one of the Jurassic Park movies and are named after the Honokohau stream that starts at the summit of Pu’u Kukui. That summit receives some of the highest levels of rainfall in the world!

Even though various helicopter tour companies offer excursions to see this waterfall, book it early! Especially if you’re visiting Maui during the busy winter months .

7. Waikamoi Falls

Next on the list is Waikamoi Falls. Right past the mile 10 marker on the Road to Hana, you’ll see a singular parking spot before the one-lane bridge. The trail is on the right when facing upstream on the bridge.

A quick 50-yard walk takes you to the emerald-green pool’s base. Feeling adventurous? Follow the stream bed up to a second, more impressive waterfall.

With multiple spots to sit underneath the cascading water, this waterfall is the perfect pit stop to see something beautiful and cool down.

If the stream is raging, it’s best not to go to the second waterfall. Otherwise, it’s an easily accessible, reasonably quick jungle hike.

8. Alelele Falls

Allele Falls is an impressive 50-foot waterfall that’s only a short hike away. Take a quick, 15-minute trek through the Kipahulu region of Haleakala National Park to see this beauty!

Located between mile markers 38 and 39, the trailhead is next to the Alelele Stream. To find it easily, download a copy of Google Maps to your phone and mark the stream before hitting the road.

Once there, you’ll enter the trail to the right of the bridge and head up. About 3/4 of the way through, you must cross the stream, so wear shoes that can get wet!

9. Waikani Falls

One of the most famous waterfalls in the Hawaiian islands , Waikani Falls, is visible right off the road! Like most on this list, they’re seen along the road to Hana, just beyond mile marker 19.

While you can soak up the views from the bridge without leaving your car, it’s worth trying to get parking to get a closer view of the falls. There’s parking available past the bridge, and the trailhead begins below.

The hike to the swimming pool starts out pretty steep but then levels off, so you can cruise once you get past the initial push!

The falls are photogenic, and you’ll find the surrounding area full of lush plants and gorgeous foliage.

Be mindful not to block the road while looking at the falls! Even though the Road to Hana is a tourist destination, many people commute on this road daily. Pull over to let locals pass and find somewhere to pull over before taking pictures.

10. Hanawi Falls

Hanawi Falls is one of the most picturesque waterfalls on the Road to Hana. This natural wonder is located right after mile marker 45.

While it’s only about 30 feet high, it cascades down multiple points. At the bottom of the falls, you’ll find a pleasant swimming hole for an icy cold dip.

You can stay on the bridge to enjoy these falls, or if you’re feeling like a swim, you can trek down to the pools. If you remain on the bridge, be mindful of vehicles passing behind you, and don’t block traffic!

Flash floods are especially common in this part of Maui due to the significant yearly rainfall.

 11. Wailua Falls

Once you’ve stopped at Hanawi Falls, continue on to mile marker #45 to see the incredible Wailua Falls Maui! Cascading 80 feet down a jungle wall, it’s a magical stop.

The best part? There are even ample parking and local vendors.

Stop, take some time to soak in the views, walk down to the plunge pool for a quick swim, and then get some snacks to fuel the rest of your drive!

Even if you don’t have time to stop, you can still see the waterfall from your car as you drive past— but it’s definitely worth taking some extra time here.

12. Kopiliula Falls

Located at the end of a 2-mile hike, Kopiliula Falls is a stunning waterfall, well worth the extra effort to visit.

This waterfall is tricky to find— start at the Kopiliula stream bridge and park at a small, rocky embankment. Climb down to the stream, and find a lightly used trail just beyond the bushes on the left side of the creek.

Halfway through, you’ll come across a large pool of water. You must swim through that pool to get to the final waterfall.

While parts of the trail get steep, there should be ropes to help you get up and down safely. Once there, enjoy the waterfall! Chances are, you’ll have it all to yourself!

Pro Tip: Make sure to leave any sensitive items in the car or pack a dry bag to bring with you!

Seven Sacred Pools in Maui surrounded by huge rocks and trees.

13. Makapipi Falls

How often do you get to see a waterfall from directly above? For a unique viewpoint of Makapipi Falls, you don’t have to do anything other than find a parking spot (a special kind of challenge on the road to Hana) and walk over.

At the bridge near mile marker 25, peek over the edge on the ocean side to see the Makapipi Falls from a bird’s eye view!

Be careful not to lean too far over the bridge— fatal falls have occurred here. Hold tight to the railing and watch the water shoot out of a lava-rock chute and into a plunge pool.

During the dry season, this waterfall dries up quickly.

14. Makamaka’ole Falls

The reward at the end of the hike, known as 13 crossings, Makamaka’ole Falls is a cute waterfall with a fun swimming pool at the bottom.

Located in the West Maui mountains past Wailuku town, it’s one of the few waterfalls featured not on the Road to Hana.

The hike itself is relatively easy, only 2 miles out and back. Still, it requires a good amount of balance as you cross the stream multiple times and clamber over rocks.

I’ve visited these falls several times and enjoy the jungle atmosphere and quick dip at the end. The pool is small but deep enough to submerge fully.

If you’re feeling extra adventurous (and have more arm strength than I do), climb up the rope dangling over the falls for additional views!

15. Makahiku Falls

Makahiku Falls is an impressive 185-foot tall fall close to the Pipiwai trailhead’s beginning.

Approximately a half-mile hike in, this waterfall is an impressive end-destination if you don’t want to go the additional 1.5 miles to Waimoku Falls.

While you won’t be next to the waterfall and definitely won’t be able to swim in it, you’ll still be close enough to hear the thundering water, see the spray in the air, and be in awe.

It’s stunning!

16. Puohokamoa Falls

Located along the road to Hana, the upper and lower falls of Puohokamoa can be seen from two separate vantage points.

Upper Puohokamao can be seen from the Garden of Eden. This conservatory and botanical gardens are open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Admission costs $20 and gives you access to 2 miles of beautiful nature trails.

You also have the ability to drive through and see the sights. You’ll get a bird’s eye view of the 30-foot falls from the garden!

The lower falls of Puohokamoa can be seen from a lookout point along the highway. These falls are an impressive 200-foot height!

You can’t hike down to them as the trail is closed to the public. The lookout point is 0.8 miles past mile marker 10 and is worth a stop!

Makahiku Falls surrounded by small mountains covered with trees.

 17. Nemo Falls

This beautiful, multitiered waterfall and swimming pool is a bit off the beaten track and requires a quick 1/3-mile hike through Ko’olau Forest Reserve.

Most of the hike is along a 4-wheel drive ditch access road. You will need to cross a narrow utility footbridge as well.

Please note that the access road and footbridge are most likely owned by East Maui Irrigation (EMI) and could be considered trespassing.

I haven’t heard of anyone getting in trouble for going on EMI property, but it is a potential risk.

The final stretch is a steep scramble up potentially slippery rocks. It’s worth the extra effort, though! Upon arriving, you’ll find a fantastic swimming pool and a gorgeous waterfall.

Don’t risk visiting this waterfall if there’s any chance of flash flooding.

18. Four Falls of Na’ili’ili Haele

Half a mile past the 6-mile marker, you’ll find the Four Falls of Na’ili’ili Haele. Also known as “bamboo forest,” this trail is entirely on EMI property but incredibly fun.

While the hike requires balance, finding parking is one of the most complex parts! While driving, you’ll see the thick bamboo forest to your right. You’ll need to park further up the road and then walk down.

Find any opening into the bamboo forest— they all lead to the main trail. You must cross an EMI ditch, but the trail follows the stream to the first of the four falls.

The first two waterfalls are pretty easy to get to, but then after that, you’ll need to climb up a ladder/rope section and follow the stream bed up the mountain.

When you come to a big swimming area, you’ll need to set your stuff down and swim upriver to get to the last two waterfalls!  Don’t let the cold water stop you– this is seriously so fun and one of my favorite hikes on Maui.

This epic waterfall adventure is a half-day tour with several waterfalls and cliff jumping for the adventurous!

Meet your group at the departure point, then head towards Hana for a jungle adventure.

With a mild-moderate hike lasting 3.5 hours, you’ll see a bamboo forest, try exotic fruits, go swimming, and take excellent photos and videos. Make sure to ask your guide about Hawaiian culture and customs!

The quintessential Maui experience; it doesn’t get much better than this. With a maximum tour group size of 15, your guide will cater your tour according to your preferences and abilities.

Our guide was friendly and helpful in crossing the river that was higher than normal. The hike was challenging but getting to the waterfalls made it all worth it. Overall a really fun and memorable experience for our family. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Cassi_M, Jun 2023

🏆 Small-Group Waterfall and Rainforest Hiking Adventure in Maui

5.0 ⭐️ 910 Reviews

This small group waterfall and rainforest hiking adventure in Maui is a great way to experience the rainforest.

Not only do you get hotel pick-up and drop-off, but you’ll also get to do part of the Hana Highway on the way to the trailhead.

Your naturalist guide will be able to answer your questions about the local fauna, and a delicious lunch and snacks are included.

The hike is relatively easy, and you’ll see a beautiful waterfall in the lush surroundings and dip in the refreshing river water. Only 8 people are allowed on this tour, and it’s approximately 5 hours long.

Erica was an excellent tour guide throughout. Very informative and kept everyone engaged. I’m glad Hike Maui has their own porta potties, makes the experience that much more enjoyable. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Johanna_P, Jun 2023

🏆 Rappel Maui Waterfalls and Rainforest Cliffs

5.0 ⭐️ 295 Reviews

One of the best things to do in Maui is to take this small-group tour and rappel Maui waterfalls and rainforest cliffs along the Road to Hana for the adventure of a lifetime. Never rappelled before? Don’t let that stop you!

This is the perfect place to learn how, as your guides will start you off small and then scale up to a 30-foot waterfall.

Even if the waterfall is flooded, you’ll still get to rappel down jungle cliffs in a private rainforest canyon.

I’ve seen many pictures from this tour; you can bet it’s on my Maui bucket list!

We had a great time! Shauna and Naomi made the day even more fun! Our 16 and 10 year old sons loved the experience!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Amy_C, Jun 2023

For the ultimate adventure, check out this horseback riding adventure in Maui ! Get matched to a horse based on your riding abilities, and then ride into the West Maui Mountains.

Head through gulches, see waterfalls, and then take an oceanfront trail and ride along one of the best beaches in Maui .

Not only will your guide provide you with complimentary drinks, but they’ll also give you insight into the culture and landscape you’re riding through.

Finish the tour with a visit to a local petting zoo and see mini horses, sheep, and rabbits. Even inexperienced riders are welcome!

We had 2 ATV riders and 2 horseback riders. Both groups had a TON of fun! Both of my daughters (one in each group) called this the highlight of their vacation! It was definitely the highlight of mine! The guides were terrific and took wonderful pictures for us. Definitely recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Dana_M, Jun 2023

🏆 VIP Private Road to Hana Tour with Pick Up

5.0 ⭐️ 260 Reviews

Want to do the whole road to Hana without any of the driving? This is definitely the tour for you! A f ull-day trip , this tour includes visiting Hana, Hamoa Beach, and a stop at Waimoku Falls.

Don’t worry— you’ll be doing more than just that! See Paia, a cute hippy town on the North Shore, the falls at Twin Falls, the Ke’anae Arboretum, lava tubes, the red sand beach, the black sand beach of Wai’anapanapa, and so much more.

Hana has so much to explore and delight in! This tour is the perfect opportunity to soak up the best stops and spend the day enjoying the scenery instead of stressing about the drive.

Kasey was great. She took us to some unique spots and had so much knowledge about the island. We would highly recommend this tour. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Karen_W, Jun 2023

Tips for Visiting Waterfalls in Maui

Visiting a waterfall while you’re in Maui is a must-do! You should know a few things before heading out into the jungle, either on tour or on your own.

✔️ Most importantly, it’s best not to hike to any falls if it’s raining up the mountain or has been the last few days. The water might be impressive, but the chance of flash flooding is high.

✔️ It is common to hear about hikers needing to be rescued via helicopter. Don’t let that be you!

✔️ I recommend bringing the following items: Swimsuit, towel, water bottle, water shoes (or sandals that you can carry!), and clothes you don’t mind getting muddy in. Insect repellant is also a great idea!

✔️ If you have a dry bag, many of these waterfall hikes are a perfect time to use it.

✔️ If you get cold quickly (like me), I’d also recommend taking an extra layer to wear on the car ride since you’ll likely be wet.

Overall rating

Fun morning tour without needing to spend your full day on hana but still get some hikes in!

Did this tour on our first trip and was not disappointed the 2nd time. Completely different experience. Older folks were able to jump off the 20ft ledges but they also had spots where it was anywhere from1-5ft for young ... ones or those that were unsure. The hike through the jungle is so beautiful.

Best experience of our trip!

Our morning waterfall hike was fabulous. Tony was an amazing guide and spent lots of time answering our questions. We have 14, 11, and 6 year old kids and the hike was the perfect amount of time and difficulty for all of ... them to enjoy it. We loved learning about the history of the area, the agriculture, and experiencing it all firsthand. This was a highlight of our trip.

With lush tropical rainforests, steep volcanic terrain, and abundant annual rainfall, Maui offers some fantastic waterfall hiking opportunities. The tours on this page offer you a chance to go experience this beauty through the eyes of a professional guide ... you will see more and understand more than going it alone! The first three tours all offer varying levels of hiking in waterfall areas, while the fourth tour features the rugged and lunar-like landscape of Haleakala, Maui's 10,000 foot tall volcano.

Waterfall and Rainforest Hiking Adventure

maui waterfall hike tour

Waterfall & Rainforest Hiking Adventure

maui waterfall hike tour

$159.00 per Hiker (plus 4.712% Hawaii sales tax)

This is the most popular hike, which takes place in a unique valley with a variety of waterfalls ranging in height from 10 to 40 feet on two different streams. There are large, clear swimming holes under each of the falls. Adding to your adventure, there are several spots where you can jump safely from rock ledges into the waterfall pools below, which makes a fantastic photo opportunity. Learn about Maui's wonders from the naturalist guides, and end the hike with a natural "shower" under a Hawaiian waterfall. The largest of these falls has ferns that hang down from a huge overhanging ledge, and you can walk completely behind the falls! A backpack, rain gear, and bug repellent are provided; water, snacks, and lunch are served on this tour.

Meeting Point: Meet your guide at the county Park-n-Ride lot in Kahului. Complimentary pick up is also available at Kahului Harbor for Pride of America guests. Pickup from South Shore and West Side hotels is available for $35 per person for those without rental cars.

Difficulty: Easy to moderate hiking Hiking Distance: 2.5 miles Tour Length: 5-6 hours Minimum age: 6 years old Gratuity: Gratuity is optional (but encouraged) for parties of 6 or less. For parties of 7 or more a gratuity of $250 per vehicle is added.

Morning Waterfall Walk

maui waterfall hike tour

$109.00 per Hiker (plus 4.712% Hawaii sales tax)

Enjoy two waterfalls on a shorter one-mile walk in the lower portion of this beautiful rainforest valley. This is the shorter version of the popular Waterfall & Rainforest Hiking Adventure; perfect if you have limited time, don't want to walk TOO far, or have younger children. You may swim under 10 and 20 foot waterfalls and jump off rock ledges into the waterfall pools if you are really adventurous! A backpack, rain gear, and bug repellent are provided; water and snacks are served on this tour.

Difficulty: Easy walking Hiking Distance: 1 mile Tour Length: 3-4 hours Minimum age: 4 years old Gratuity: Gratuity is optional (but encouraged) for parties of 6 or less. For parties of 7 or more a gratuity of $200 per vehicle is added.

Ultimate Hana Full Day Adventure

maui waterfall hike tour

$279.00 per Hiker (plus 4.712% Hawaii sales tax)

This full-day excursion completely circles the east side of Maui on the way to and from the day's premier hiking stop at Oheo Gulch. This area is known as "The 7 Sacred Pools" but as you hike about the area that most tourists go, you'll discover there's a lot more than 7 pools! You'll enjoy a hike through bamboo forests with views of many smaller waterfalls, one 200 foot waterfall, and the highlight is standing near the bottom of 400' Waimoku Falls! You will also experience a variety of waterfall and ocean overlooks on the scenic "Road to Hana" and beyond. This is a long, epic day you will remember forever. A backpack, rain gear, and bug repellent are provided; water, snacks, and lunch are served on this tour.

Meeting Point: This tour includes complimentary pickup at most Maui hotels. For those staying outside of the pickup area, meet your guide at the county Park-n-Ride lot in Central Maui.

Difficulty: Moderate Hiking Distance: 4.5 miles Tour Length: 11 hours from Central Maui Minimum age: 8 years old

Haleakala Crater Hiking Experience

maui waterfall hike tour

$199.00 per Hiker (plus 4.712% Hawaii sales tax)

No Maui vacation would be complete without viewing the magnificence of Haleakala Crater. From the 10,000 foot summit the views of the Big Island, West Maui, Molokini, Kahoolawe, Lanai, and Molokai are astounding. Haleakala is a dormant volcano, but activity here was recent enough that the landscape is otherworldly. On this hiking tour into Haleakala Crater you will experience two different trails at two different elevations with completely different environments. The first trail starts at the summit and you'll hike for two miles ... past huge cinder cones which have partially filled in the erosional valley that forms Haleakala's large "crater." The second trail is at the 8,000 foot elevation and you will hike for two miles on a lava lined trail with rare native plant species. Sightings of Hawaii's state bird, the Nene, are frequent in this area. A backpack, rain gear, and bug repellent are provided; water, snacks, and lunch are served on this tour. Completely closed-toed shoes are required due to volcanic cinders. No Tevas, sandals, crocs, etc.

Meeting Point: Meet your guide at the county Park-n-Ride lot in Central Maui.

This tour is only operated on THURSDAYS. Difficulty: Moderate Hiking Distance: 4 miles Tour Length: 7 hours Minimum age: 8 years old Gratuity: Gratuity is optional (but encouraged) for parties of 6 or less. For parties of 7 or more a gratuity of $250 per vehicle is added.

ACTIVITY TIPS

Kevin at Falls

I am often asked "why go on a hiking tour? Can't I just go and experience the same thing on my own?"

The answer to that question is a definitive "no." You could walk down the same trail on your own, and your experience will be completely different. The presence of a knowledgable local guide who loves the "aina" (land) can make all the difference in your understanding and appreciation of everything that you see. You'll learn about plants that have uses that you never imagined. You'll taste fruits that are foreign to you. You'll learn of history and geology of the area that offers insight you wouldn't get going there alone. Hike Maui, the company that organizes these tours, likes to refer to their guides as "the secret ingredient for your experience."

Obviously a guide also knows exactly where these places are so your day in the magical rainforest or volcanic landscape is maximized. No hunting for that elusive waterfall ... you'll go straight there and have more time to soak it all in. A guide who knows the "aina" will help keep you safe, and provide support if you need it. Would you like to jump off a cliff into a waterfall pool below? Doesn't it sound like a good idea to have a guide who can tell you where it is safe to jump and where there a rocks hiding below the surface???

If you have the time and are up for a longer hike with more elevation gain, the Ultimate Hana Full Day Adventure is a fantastic day! This is a long tour with a lot of riding ... the drive to and from the trailhead is 2.5 hours each way with lots of twists and turns and curves and one lane bridges and miles of rugged roads on the back side of Haleakala. When you are standing near the bottom of 400' Waimoku Falls you'll agree it was all worth it!

The Waterfall and Rainforest Hiking Adventure is the most popular tour. This is the event that will truly make you glad you had a guide with you. As you hike through an "off-the-grid" farming area you'll taste fruit you've maybe never seen before. Your guide will impress you with his or her ability to take plants from the jungle and demonstrate uses you've never thought of. You'll probably learn what a tapioca plant looks like (yes, it comes from a plant ... not from a jar with the Gerber Baby on it).

For those who want to get out in the jungle but aren't up for a longer hike, the Morning Waterfall Walk is perfect ... especially for multi-generational groups where grandma wants to take pictures of the grandkids jumping from waterfalls. The walking is easy and the distance is short, and you'll see waterfalls that other people who aren't with a guide will completely miss!

The Haleakala Crater Hiking Experience is in a category all its own. While most people think of Maui hiking centered around waterfalls, this hike is centered around a volcanic landscape that is often compared to that of the moon (or Mars). As a matter of fact, Haleakala was the backdrop for one of the final Mars scenes in the movie "Total Recall." One thing to keep in mind for this tour ... due to its elevation the air is much cooler. You are going to want to dress in layers for this one, keeping in mind that the air temperature can vary widely on this tour and daytime temperatures at 10,000 feet are often in the high 40's to low 50's. Yes, once every three or four years the summit of Haleakala even gets a light dusting of snow. Don't believe me? Check out this snowy photo of Haleakala I took from my driveway in Upper Kula. This photo actually made the front page of a Honolulu newspaper and made the rounds in the national news!

If you are really into hiking, you might consider doing two of these tours ... either the Ultimate Hana Full Day Adventure or the Waterfall and Rainforest Hiking Adventure on one day paired with the Haleakala Crater Hiking Experience on another.

A word about gratuities ... it is traditional for guides in such a service industry to rely on gratuities for a significant portion of their income. This time-honored tradition promotes excellence in service and you might want to bring along cash in case you want to express your appreciation to your guide in this way. Please note that for larger parties of 7-10 people this tour operator asks us to include a $250 gratuity per vehicle in our billing for longer tours, and $200 per vehicle for the Waterfall Walk.

  • TYPE: Out-and-back
  • DIFFICULTY: moderate

The hike is muddy and you have to cross water multiple times, so a good pair of water hiking shoes would be appropriate to wear here. Be sure and wear mosquito repellent too!

The Pipiwai Trail is located on the eastern side of the island of Maui, at the end of the famous Road to Hana. It is one of the best activities you can do along the Road to Hana in one day and should be included on everyone’s itinerary.

The hike passes by one waterfall, through a dense bamboo forest, and ends at another beautiful waterfall, Waimoku Falls. It’s a tall waterfall along the side of a wide cliff line hidden within the lush, green foliage.

The hike itself is fairly easy, at a total of 3.8 miles for this out-and-back trail. The trail includes dirt paths, stone stairs, and a boardwalk through the magical bamboo forest. You’ll cross bridges over water and pass a massive banyan tree.

The hike includes 900 feet of elevation gain and is doable for almost anyone. Some people even take kids on this hike.

To access the trail, you will have to buy a pass for Haleakala National Park at $30 per car. But since the pass is good for 48 hours, you can use the same pass to enter other areas of Haleakala, like Red Hill.

Be sure to time your visits right so that you can use the one pass for both entrances. You can also use the America the Beautiful Pass for entrance.

On this hike, you will want to wear good shoes. Hiking sandals or hiking shoes are recommended but sneakers would work as well. Be sure to bring lots of water and bug spray as well!

Punalau Falls Hike

Recommended by Melodie Rush at Travel Must Do’s

  • DISTANCE: 0.5 miles
  • TYPE: out-and-back
  • PERMIT OR FEE NEEDED: No

The hike to Punalau Falls in Maui is a great way to escape the crowds and experience one of Maui’s best waterfalls. The half-mile out-and-back hike is moderate in difficulty, with no permit or fee needed, and can be completed in about 15 minutes each way.

With its hidden location on the Road to Hana about a quarter mile passed mile marker 13, you will be rewarded with spectacular views and may even have the grandeur of the waterfall all to yourself. Note there is only one parking spot at this location.

Be sure to wear proper hiking shoes and take necessary gear such as hiking poles due to the volcanic boulders and partially submerged rocks along the trail.

Additionally, avoid visiting if it has recently rained or if rain is forecasted due to the risk of flash floods and falling rocks. The final breathtaking views of the falls will be well worth the challenging hike!

Finally, other items you may want to consider bringing are a camera to capture the stunning views of the waterfall, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a water bottle to stay hydrated. Haleakala National Park in Maui also offers stunning hikes and is a spectacular place to visit at sunrise or sunset.

Best Waterfall Hikes on the Big Island of Hawaii

The Big Island of Hawaii is the largest and most diverse of all the Hawaiian islands. Spanning an impressive 4,028 square miles, it is more than twice as large as all the other Hawaiian islands combined.

The Big Island has something for everyone–from lush jungles to snow-capped mountains, from stunning beaches to volcanic landscapes.

Here are our picks for the best waterfall hikes on the Big Island:

Rainbow Falls

Recommended by: Jessica, Uprooted Traveler

  • DISTANCE: 0.1 miles
  • DIFFICULTY: Easy
  • APPROXIMATE TIME NEEDED: 15 minutes to half an hour
  • PERMIT OR FEE NEEDED: None

It’s more of a walk to Rainbow Falls than a hike, but that just makes this the perfect addition to your Big Island itinerary , no matter what hiking level you are!

Plus, with its location within the actual town of Hilo, it makes for a great place to get out of the car and stretch your legs as you head off to explore further-flung sites on the eastern side of the island.

Rainbow Falls is an 80-foot cascade over a cave formed from basalt lava. Legend has it that Hina, the goddess of the moon and mother to Maui, lives in this very cave.

The falls in the Hawaiian language are called “ Waiānuenue” or “Rainbow Water”. And the falls are aptly-named- on sunny mornings when the waterfall has lots of water flowing through it, you’re likely to see a rainbow !

There are two different viewpoints to take in the falls- an overlook that’s a very short walk from the parking lot or, for a closer look, a hike that will take you to the top of the falls itself.

Along the short climb to the top of the falls, you’ll walk past lots of lush ferns and underbrush and enormous ancient banyan trees and eventually, be rewarded with a new perspective of the falls.

Akaka Falls

Recommended by: Tabitha, Travel Compositions

  • DISTANCE: 0.4-miles
  • APPROXIMATE TIME NEEDED: 30 min
  • PERMIT OR FEE NEEDED: $5pp entry fee plus $10 parking fee (free for residents); pro tip: anywhere outside the parking lot is free parking

Akaka Falls is arguably the most famous waterfall hike on the Big Island of Hawaii, and for good reason. It is a quick 13-mile drive north of Hilo, an easy kid-friendly trail, and has one of the tallest waterfalls you’ll likely see on the island .

The hiking trail is a one-way, paved loop that winds through a lush tropical forest, up and down stairs with only a 100ft elevation gain. Look down on tree tops in gorges, spot colorful tropical flowers, and get entangled with a row of banyan trees.

This hike technically gives you two waterfalls for the price of one. About halfway through the trail is a quick offshoot at a peek-a-boo view of Kahuna Falls, though you hear it more than you see it.

You’ll earn your Akaka Falls view after the longest stretch of uphill stairs. The path comes to a tiered, fenced viewing point of the falls plunging 442 ft down the verdant cliff to a small pool below.

As with all waterfalls in Hawaii, the amount of water flowing will be dependent on how much it has recently rained. Most likely it will be a serene, picture-perfect flow, but it has been known to be a small trickle during dry spells or a surge of raging mud after a rainstorm.

After you have finished soaking in the waterfall views, continue on the path. In a minute or two you’ll cross a small bridge with a small, unnamed waterfall hidden under the foliage.

From here it is another minute or so uphill back to the trailhead.

Wai’ale Falls

Recommended by: Lucy and Dan, Thoroughly Travel

  • Distance: 1 km (0.6 miles)
  • Type: Out and back
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Approximate Time Needed: 25 minutes
  • Permit or Fee: None

Rainbow Falls may be a picture-perfect cascade but, as one of the most popular spots in  Hilo , it’s also one of the busiest attractions in the area. If you’re eager to avoid the crowds, you’ll need to head further upriver.

Wai’ale Falls is a double cascade, which features a small island in between two waterfalls, and is one of the most rewarding hikes in Hawaii. Situated on the powerful Wailuku River, Wai’ale Falls is a secluded spot, perfect for hikers, birders, and photographers alike.

The riverside trail might be a short hike from the road, but it’s moderately difficult to traverse due to the roots and vegetation that line the path. The route can be muddy at times and might be seasonally impassable after heavy rainfall.

The effort is worth it though, as hikers are met by a picturesque spot that is perfect for a picnic or swim . Due to its secluded nature, Wai’ale Falls sees few tourists, and visitors often find they have it all to themselves.

Wai’ale Falls is easily accessible by car from Hilo. Follow Piihonua Road from the town, past Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pots (the whirlpools where Maui supposedly chased the giant lizard Mo’o Kuna after saving his mother, Hina).

Stop when you reach the small bridge that crosses the Wailuku River. There is space off the road to park your car and the trail can be found on the north side of the bridge, heading upstream.

Best Waterfall Hikes on Oahu

Oahu is the third-largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago, spanning a total of 597.5 square miles. It is well known as an important cultural hub and tourist destination, drawing millions of visitors each year.

The Island of Oahu is home to many of Hawaii’s iconic attractions, including Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head, and the USS Arizona Memorial. It is also home to some of the most spectacular waterfalls and hikes in Hawaii.

Here are just a few of the best waterfall hikes you can experience on Oahu:

Manoa Falls

Recommended by: Anu Agarwal of Destination Checkoff.

  • DISTANCE: 1.7 miles
  • TYPE: Out and Back
  • DIFFICULTY: Moderate, due to elevation
  • APPROXIMATE TIME NEEDED: 1 to 2 hours
  • PERMIT OR FEE NEEDED: There is a $7 parking fee per vehicle

Manoa Falls is a very popular hike in Manoa Valley of Oahu island and should be part of any Oahu itinerary . You can reach Manoa Falls Trailhead with just a 15-20 minute drive from Honolulu where most of the hotels and resorts are.

This is a short hike with a total distance of 1.7 miles out and back and an elevation of 633 feet. The Manoa falls at the end of the hike are stunning.

There are some stairs towards the end to reach the base of Manoa falls.

The path is muddy and not paved and it can be wet and slippery during the wet season. Being inside a rainforest, expect wet trails, and do not wear your best light-colored hiking shoes here!

The area receives a lot of rainfall so it’s best to check the weather before the hike.

The hike is very beautiful and scenic and passes through a tropical rainforest, bamboo forest, and a lot of vegetation.

Swimming is not allowed at the base of Manoa falls but the view of the falls from the viewing area is spectacular.

Waimea Falls Trail

  • DISTANCE: 1.9 miles
  • APPROXIMATE TIME NEEDED: 45 minutes
  • PERMIT OR FEE NEEDED: $25 or $10 with military ID

The first thing to know about this ” hike” is it really is more of a walk. It’s very easy, and pretty busy, so if you are looking for an authentic hike and waterfall experience this may not be for you.

However, if you are looking for an easy walk with small children, this is the perfect spot!

Waimea Falls Trail is the perfect excursion for travelers looking for a relaxing day out to witness some of Hawaii’s incredible natural beauty.

This trail is a short 1.9-mile out-and-back hike, making it an ideal choice for families with children or those who don’t want to commit to a long hike.

The trail passes through some of Oahu’s lush tropical rainforest and features excellent views of Waimea Bay.

As you reach the end, you will come to a viewing area with stunning views of the 80-foot waterfall.

Swimming is allowed in the lower pool at the base of the falls.

Best Waterfall Hikes on Kuai

Kuai is the fourth largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago, spanning a total of 550.2 square miles. It is well known as both an important cultural hub and tourist destination, drawing millions of visitors each year.

Kuai is home to many of Hawaii’s iconic attractions, including the Waimea Canyon, which is known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, and the Na Pali Coast. It is also home to some of the most spectacular waterfalls and hikes in Hawaii.

Here are just a few of the best waterfall hikes you can experience on Kuai:

Hanakapi’ai Falls Trail

  • DISTANCE: 7.7 miles
  • DIFFICULTY: Difficult
  • APPROXIMATE TIME NEEDED: 5 hours
  • PERMIT OR FEE NEEDED: $35 for shuttle and entrance fee

You’ll need to make reservations in advance to hike here and take the shuttle to the trailhead. Reservations can be made at Go Hā’ena .

Hanakapi’ai Falls Trail is one of the most beautiful and challenging hikes on the island of Kuai. The trail takes you over rocks, across numerous streams, and through the lush tropical rainforests for a total distance of 7.7 miles out-and-back with an elevation gain of 1,140 feet.

This hike is not recommended after a lot of rain as it can be slippery and muddy. Being an experienced hiker is recommended as it is not one of the most accessible waterfalls.

At the end of the trail, you’ll find Hanakapi’ai Falls, an 80-foot waterfall cascading over some rocks into a pool below.

Remember to bring plenty of water, snacks, and a camera to enjoy the views and capture your memories.

Ho’opi’i Falls

  • DISTANCE: 2.4 miles
  • DIFFICULTY: Moderate
  • PERMIT OR FEE NEEDED: none

Note that Ho’opi Falls is located behind a residential area. It’s important to respect the fact that people live here.

Do not trespass on private land. Don’t arrive before 8 am and speak quietly until you get beyond the houses. Only park near the trailhead and not in the neighborhood.

People jump into the water and swim here, but it is not recommended due to bacteria from old septic tanks leaking into the pools.

Ho’opi Falls is an incredible destination for travelers looking to explore the lush and beautiful island of Kuai. This moderately difficult two-mile out-and-back trail takes hikers through a tropical rainforest filled with vibrant wildlife and colorful foliage.

The path is well-marked, so you don’t need to worry about getting lost along the way.

Upper Ho’opi’i Falls is about 15 feet tall, and Lower Ho’opi Falls is a 30 feet cascading fall.

The lower falls are located about a mile away from the upper falls. You may recognize the lower falls from Jurassic Park !
